We had a few athletes who competed today, why no commentary on them. I understand the low expectations  :D

I have not seen the results. Who win ?

Only noteworthy news were MLA winning her heat in commanding fashion in 22.50, Semoy Hackett advancing as well, and Bellville advancing to the 400m hurdles semis as one of the faster losers.

It's buffet style so use your mouse and click around iaaf.org/results:

Years now I watching Mikel Thomas run 100 hurdles for T&T and he could never get past the first round at International events.
.
He does have a herky-jerky/ high jump over each hurdle style; don't know how he runs the times he does.

He has however advanced a few times out of the heats:
2016 World Indoor Championships (Portland) - 7th in his semi-finals
2013 World Outdoor Championships (Moscow) - 4th in his semi-finals
2008 Olympic Games (Beijing) - 6th in his quarter-finals
In lesser competition he won gold in the 2015 U-23 NACAC (north America, Central America and Caribbean) Games

Coming off any injury you have to run yourself back to 100%; you cannot train yourself to 100% as the best workouts do not equate to actual competition. But as I assume we agree, that process should not include the OG unless you are from a B standard country like Nauru or Tuvalu in the South Pacific.

Some may argue that it is prudent to carry a 400m hurdler in case of a need in the 4x400m qualifier. However 400m hurdlers typically split about 3-3.5 secs faster than their hurdling times. In his current state of conditioning that would put Jehue in 46.5 to 47 sec relay leg shape which will both be useless and disastrous to the relay team's chances. Decades ago there used to be heats, semis and finals for the 4x400m; these days it's a straight, drag race semi-finals with a lot of talent parity, so you can't chance it with a slow leg.

At least he ran a SB 49.98 today, and it seems like whatever blight he caught spread around to others:
Nicholas Bett (KEN) - DQ
Jeffery Gibson (BAH) - 52.77
Michael Tinsley (US) - 50.18
Kareem Hussein (SUI) - 49.80

34
Jehue Gordon finshed last in his heat, He has declined very badly since winning World Champs three years ago.
.

In his defense, the newspapers mentioned that he had abdominal surgery last year and is still on the road to recovery. It MUST be very tough coming back especially in a race like the 400m hurdles where abdominal strength is key.

That being said, why was he selected?
He has not broken 50 this year.
He obviously was not selected to gain experience.
Did they think he would suddenly catch form in Rio?

If he is still sponsored by Adidas, he should have sat out to run after the OG in Europe, in an attempt to regain some confidence ahead of next year's season and WC. If he has lost his sponsorship (though I'm sure he's still getting TT elite funding), then he might have hoped to reclaim something in Rio to gain invitations to some of the bigger meets in Europe later this season.

As it stands he has not done much for his confidence, has not excited any meet promoters, and has only fueled disappointment in the impatient, knowledge-lacking TTO public (imagine some steupsing because Cedenio didn't medal)

35
If Cedenio starts running the 200's he can challenge both L Merritt and K James.

So why yuh leave Wayde van Niekerk name out of it, yuh feel he bionic?  8)

He may well be except for the last 100m.
Here are unofficial 100m splits from an internet article today - looks likely after reviewing the video
100m - 10.7
200m - 9.8 (20.5)
300m - 10.5 (31.0) - Michael Johnson (31.66)
400m - 12.0 (43.03) - Michael Johnson (11.5)

36
Perspective:
Cedenio's NR 0f 44.01 would have medalled in every other Olympic Games 400m final in history.

In many it would have garnered gold or silver, and in all except this one, at least bronze.

He moved from 46th (44.34) to 15th fastest 400m performer ever.

Only Jeremy Wariner (44.00); Larry James (43.97); Kirani James (43.94); and Steve Lewis (43.87) have run faster before turning 21 (Cedenio will be 21 in September) - all are Olympic champions except Larry James an Olympic silver medallist. Nice company and great signs for his future.

37
Expect Machel to easily break sub 44 next year and be on the medal podium in the World Champs

Watch d ride  :beermug:

If he runs in altitude in La Chau-de-Fonds or Sestriere this year, that sub-44 will happen.

38
Wow.
That 400 WR was ridiculous. And he look like he wasn't really running that hard.

I thought Cedenio had a chance, but so it does go.

When you run your best you cannot ask for more, Cedenio is a boss and younger than all 3 medallists

39
Van Niekirk WR 43.03   ::) ::)
Cedenio 4th in TTO NR 44.01   :beermug: :beermug:

How de hell Taplin got lane 4 in the final with Cedenio in lane 3?

I honestly do not know why Jehue is on the team, his season's best shows as 50.30 on the IAAF website. Emanuel Mayers has run 50.05 and as of 2015 showed he can contribute sufficiently to the 4x400m pool in the Panam Games.

And let's be honest, being in Ato's camp did not yield what was expected - KSF improved/PRed barely and has been injured; there was much fanfare about RT running the 200m this year but did not happen anywhere near frequent nor with quality (maybe his car accident had something to do with that); KAB left for some reason that we will find out in due course. I think his transition to coaching is a work in progress and his camp may need to mature like others with resources in sports science, massage therapy, dietetics.

As has been echoed - being a world class junior athlete doesn't ensure the same success as a senior. Well, being a world class senior athlete does not necessarily translate into a world class coach. As an ambitious fella I expect he will eventually succeed tremendously.

42
10.20, 10.23, 10.29 after running sub-10s in NAAA champs.

They said they had a great camp, and these guys are experienced, so it couldn't be nerves, they knew what level of effort was required. Maybe it is just as you all say, an end of an era, guys legs just too worn out.

Can't remember when last (with quality entries) we didn't advance anyone past the 2nd round/QF at the WC or OG

MEN'S 400M SEMI-FINALS START LISTS

Can't understand these semi assignments - heat 3 is a cake walk compared to 1 and 2.

Tough going for Lalonde in lane #3 but he can see the opposition.
If he runs close to Merritt and James and beats out Santos he has a chance

Cedenio has a decent lane draw but cannot leave it late
He needs to run like he did in the first 300m of his heat

Dion did not make it
That workload at Texas A&M has caught up with him.
Like Briana Rollins who went stale for a year after college, he may have to regather and come good next year.
At least we'll have a fresh man in reserves for the relay

Ta Lou ran well out of the blocks transitioning through to high knees and running tall. Decent race from MLA she had a better start than in the heats but was just beaten here by Ta Lou's better form.

I dont think Ivory Coast can challenge us yet they have two strong legs but we have 4 solid legs. Great Britain yes but Ivory Coast not yet.

Our medal chances are definitely under threat - Jamaica, USA, and now this yesterday:

Uh oh, we better come good!!

In Mannheim on Friday, Germany's 4x100m women's relay team sent a message out of their own as Tatjana Pinto, Lisa Mayer, Gina Luckenkemper and Rebekka Haase won in 41.62, the quickest time in the world this year as their sprinters raised the tempo for the Olympics with a farewell meeting to remember.

46
On another note, TT left the U20 with one bronze. I believe this is a reflection of our downward performances from Carifta.

This is so distressing. What wrong with we?

My guess is a combination of the following:
1. Lack of quality off-season strengthening and conditioning coaching.
(i) Whether plyometric or weight training, athletes 16/17 and older need to be introduced to these methods by qualified individuals.
(ii) Coaches should look at collaborating with peers in other sports where advanced techniques are in play, or even employ the help of qualified gym trainers

2. Lack of quality off-season, year-end performance reviews and goal setting.
(i) We do not have to rely on the government to spend money to send athletes to facilities like Michael Johnson's. In this day and age of social media videos, amateur video manipulation (slo-mo), and affordable equipment (SoloShot), coaches can review pros and cons with their top athletes to figure out what needs to improve (form, flexibility, strength, technique, etc), then set plans and goals for both the off-season and the following competitive season.

3. Lack of in-season technical and mental coaching.
(i) Very few of our athletes show efficient basic form, or astute race planning as do their competitors from Jamaica, Bahamas, and Barbados. Case in point, look at the U20 men's 4x400m relay final and look at the 0.5-1.0 loss on every relay interchange compared to the US where the outgoing runner takes a couple of steps then turns and takes the baton maintaining the relay baton momentum.
(ii) At least one official accompanying our teams needs to deliver the "pep" talk, about pride in wearing the red, white and black, about owning the track, about not throwing away the hours, days, months of painful workouts. Some athletes get it on their own, but they all need some sort of supportive, rallying speech to raise their mental attitudes as they enter competitions.
(iii) Unless one is injured you never should run more than 0.5 sec slower than your PB with that uniform on, at such a major competition. Your goal should at a minimum be to advance past the heats and/or run a SB or PB - what happened in the U20 men's 400m (48 point and 50 point)?

4. Overall lack of focus and capability to coach non-sprint, field and other technical events.
(i) Except for one-off talents, we generally do not produce numbers in the hurdles, jumps and throws.
(ii) Coaches need to convince "middling" sprinters to try the hurdles, jumps, or middle distances, even if for a year, just to explore.
(iii) In most meets you'll see 5-10 heats for any of the sprints, but straight finals for most every other event.

47

Seriously now, why we did not send a boys and girls relay team to compete at the World Juniors?

TTO sent a girl's 4x100m team that did not start due to St. Fort's "injury" - obviously they did not figure us as a medal threat and did not have an alternate or extra athlete qualified in another individual event such as the 100m hurdles, long jump to substitute.

TTO boy's 4x400m team is in tomorrow's final but going will be tough. Botswana won their heat in 3:03.xx and other teams posted better times.

In an Olympic year when funds are prioritized for the senior Olympic team, in addition to the NACAC U-23 Games (don't know if we sent anyone), you have to expect that the WJC team will be under-represented. In addition not many of our athletes made the entry standards.

Curiously though, regarding funds allocation, I wonder how many officials are there?

What about Track & Field / Re: Jonathan Farinha

He attends and competes for UTech in Jamaica.
He led off for them in the 4x100m relay in this year's Penn Relays.

Most likely he's been injured based on this year's posted times below - they are way below his best:
