Breaking news: Donnie Walsh out as GM according to the NY Times.

Other offseason development: Team chose to pick up the $14m option on Chauncey Billups for next season. The alternative was a $3m buyout.

edit: from the NY Times blog

In a surprising announcement, the Knicks announced late Friday morning that Donnie Walsh would be leaving his post as team president when his contract expires at the end of this month. The team characterized Walsh’s exit as by mutual agreement between him and the team’s principle owner, James L. Dolan.

(Use of "principle" and not "principal" by the Times).

I'd like for both LeBro or Dirk to win their ring, but the heart telling me Dirk window of opportunity smaller.  Let's go Mavs!

Exactly how I feel. LeBron playing incredible and I'm happy for him but if I had my way he'd wait one more year to get the ring.

If Dirk, Kidd and Peja could all get rings in one swoop, for me, that would be a great end to what I think was the best season I've ever followed.

edit: I forget to add Marion (and possibly Caron Butler if he makes it back) to the list of players I'd like to see win an NBA final. By my count the Mavs roster has 29 all-star appearances among players with no ring (Dirk 10, Kidd 10, Marion 4, Peja 3, Caron 2). That must be a record or close.

No love fuh Terry?

Huge win for Miami... great bench play by Haslem and Chalmers.  Still the three stars yet to show up and Miami still looking dominant.  Mavs need more from Dirk and more from the bench.

Yeah, I really shouldn't have left out Terry. Don't know how I managed that. I was actually living in Atl during most of his time there. He was a big part of the team actually being watchable.

big game tonight for the Mavs. Winning the 3 straight home games in the middle of the series is a difficult proposition.

Answer: because I live in a free society. Same as you when you exercised your authority to decide to state your interpretation of what the Bible was/is.

I'm not sure you understood what I meant. Probably my fault if so. Not talking about authority in any legal sense. My question is: what makes you feel comfortable about using your own faculties to decide what to take and what to leave? I suspect that your reference to the Holy Spirit later on in your answer is indicative of your position.

One claim made about and in the Bible is that the Bible is the divinely inspired word of god. It seems to me that when you choose not to take something in the Bible literally, you are spurning other claims made about and in the Bible by the same sources.

Quote
Comment: your opinion and free to make it without fear of reprisal. I disagree. My morality is influenced by dogma (i.e. the problems with dogma) and influenced by the Holy Spirit working within us.

I'm not entirely sure that I understand what you are saying. If you're saying that the Holy Spirit working within you is what gives you the ability to recognize flaws in the dogma then I think we're at an impasse.

if they believe that they are the absolute power and nothing is greater than their existence.

this is not the same thing as saying you don't believe in God.

Now reading through the thread and I have a question for pecan (sorry if you've answered it elsewhere and I haven't read carefully enough):

why do you think you have the authority to decide how to interpret the Bible? The things in the Bible that you or I might not like are not any less biblical than the things we do like.

As I understand it the Bible was presented to society as the word of God and originally there was no option to interpret as you wished. Over time pockets of people start to decide that more and more of the book weren't meant to be taken literally. More or less because they couldn't abide by the literal interpretation. It seems to me that it's is indicative of a morality that is 1) independent of that based on dogma and 2) capable of growing organically i.e. no external entity imposed these insights.

Jack really feel any CFU rep was going to bat for him after he get de-clawed? Like he forget FIFA representation is about following the leader and he ent the leader no more.

I don't think this letter is about that. It have 3 possibilities for the medium term 1) Sepp back in charge and Jack in exile 2) all of them get kicked out 3) Sepp back in power and Jack get forgiven. As unlikely as the last option is it's the only way Jack could still be in the mix when the dust settles. I think when the fight had just start he had delusions that he coulda push out Blatter.

The charge that Jack on the hook for is for bribing people to vote against Blatter. I think this is just an attempt to discredit that charge.

the real tragedy is that 208 FAs couldn't come up with a better cast of characters to choose from.

anybody else notice Miami's crowd? It have times that you can hear a loud "Let's go Heat" chant yet none of the fans that you can actually see are particularly animated. People with good seats don't like to make noise in Miami? Are they piping in artificial fan noise?

D'Antoni just get outcoached in game 1,

1. He's always letting Chauncey take too many bad shots: long jumpers early in the shot clock sometimes not even if rhythm.
2. The play when KG score off the lob coming out the time out to bring the lead down to 1 shoulda never come off
3. When Boston called the last timeout he shoulda have a play drawn up in case we needed a basket. Them fellas clearly didn't have a plan so by default they have to give Melo the ball and let him make the decision because that's his role. He is the man who has been taking them shots for the last 2 months. And making them most of the time.

Michigan became the first team to win a tourney game without making a free throw.  They went 0-1.

I don't understand how a team could let another team run up the score on them and not commit more than one shooting foul in the process.

He was also a fine footballer at school, in goal, as a defenceman and also as a forward. He was also a doubles table tennis champion of Trinidad and Tobago in partnership with the brilliant Winston 'Reds' Mulligan and his love for history (especially the Second World War) is unique.

I going to guess that Reds Mulligan was his brother-in-law and his sister's name was Mrs. Mulligan.

When you say transparent what you mean, they should show the paper they write on? Because they have always stated that what they are looking for in terms of the performance. Somewhere I had seen what percentage was allocated to Clarity, presentation, etc.

One thing I could say is I know one of the judges, I use to work with him and there is no way anyone getting him to go with something he against. No way, he will cuss them out and leave. Seeing his name as one of the judges makes me feel much better about the results being fair.

it's not even that complicated. The judging criteria has been laid out beforehand (evidenced by the fact that you have seen the allocations yourself). The actual breakdown of the numbers should have been available from the jump even if no one had any particular interest in them. Let people decide if the numbers pass the smell test or not.

To say that he wasn't in position to give the numbers off the top of his head is one thing but that can't be the end of the story. The government is giving an organization millions of dollars to disburse.

From what I remember watching past Panoramas for example, the judges would announce each band's point total while announcing the results. I assume that the bands also have recourse to get a full breakdown after the fact.

Contrast with this situation: almost a week pass, and it reach the point where the head of security is making accusations about an artiste's personal conduct, seemingly as a means of justifying the results. It just seems like an unnecessarily jokey way to conduct everything.

Daryn, you know crowd response makes up part of the point system right??  So it has to count.  I can't remember how much is allocated to crowd response though but it wouldn't be much.....

the rules are the rules. I suppose you can't leave out crowd response.

In any case, if they not going to be transparent about the scoring they might as well have no point system at all. Maybe I'm just too pedantic but the judge's comment gave me the impression that they just sit down and talk about who they feel should win.

Machel Montano won the competition's $2 million first prize by three points more than George, Munro, founder of Caribbean Prestige Foundation (CPF), said. Ian "Bunji Garlin" Alvarez was third, one point behind George, and Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez was fourth, ten points behind Montano, Munro said, although he noted he could not recall the exact tally of points for each artiste.

maybe is just me but I find it kinda strange that he remember them point differences but doh remember the points totals. If he remember just one person total then he has all the information handy to calculate the others.

Watching the videos, I thought Machel's performance was clearly superior to Iwer's. I don't really think that too much weight should be put into crowd response because the crowd could make up their mind about who to like or not like completely independent of the performance on the night. Especially with all the highly publicised contentiousness leading up to the show. However seeing that the competition is state-backed, I think it's inappropriate for Munro to say that he doesn't remember the totals.

The head of security for the Power Soca Monarch, who requested anonymity, described George's behaviour backstage as "despicable".

this is unfortunate, if true, but really have nothing to do with the scoring. Seems gratuitous to bring it up.

"We did the best that we could do. And I stand by the choice that Mr Montano was the winner of the competition after we tallied the votes," Edwards said.

maybe this person misspoke but this statement gives me the impression there was no formal judging criteria. Tallying votes and assigning points are not the same thing.

Orlando come from down 24 to beat Miami last night.

2nd time recently that ORL overcome a decent lead to comeback. Also the 2nd time that the Heat cough up a big lead recently.

NYK need to get a win tonight and separate from PHI in the playoff race. Although I not sure if facing the 3 seed going to be better than facing the 2 seed.

85
In January of 2005, me and big dawg went to the garden to watch this game (espn box score at the link)*. I knew Ariza was going to be good.

I don't mean to belabour the point but we trade the man so we could get a Stephon Marbury clone to play with Stephon Marbury. I have no idea how Isiah and Larry Brown convinced each other that was going to work.

*-This was during the short-lived Herb Williams coaching era. At one point Knicks was making a run in the 3rd quarter and had all the momentum and Herb called a timeout and kill the game. That's when we knew Herb had to go back to coaching school.

86
I hear what yuh saying about ex-Knicks doing well. IMO, the problem with the Isiah era wasn't the players that pass thru but rather that Isiah just couldn't stop tinkering and the team was never well put together at any point in time. It had quite a few times when the team was starting to gel and they go and do something experimental.

the two transactions that infuriated/perplexed me the most from the Knicks
1) we realized that Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph couldn't play together so we keep Curry and trade Zach Randolph for Tim Thomas.
2) we make an excellent draft pick to get Trevor Ariza and the man doing very well and we turn around and ship him to Orlando so we could experiment with a Steve Francis/Stephon Marbury backcourt.

Also, it's really a shame that Eddy Curry's contract is the reason we don't have Amar'e, Melo and David Lee at the same time.

87
My Knicks surprised me tonight... great fight, and good early return on a trade that I still not convinced about.  I watch Gallo, Chandler and Felton take it to Portland the other night and my heart was heavy with regret that they no longer in NY blue.

But kudos to Anthony and Billups for coming in fully committed on both ends.

great win indeed. best for the season. Against good opposition, away from the garden, huge spotlight and overcoming several large deficits in the process.

I will miss them fellas a lot but from a basketball perspective I think Melo is worth it.  The way I see it is if we had managed to keep all of them and get Melo he woulda usurped most of Chandler and Gallo's responsibilities anyway. I rather have Felton than Chauncey myself but I guess we all in for Chris Paul in 2012.

I don't think we could catch Atlanta (or Orlando if they fall far enough) for the 5th seed but if we did I think we would prob beat the 4 seed with this team.  Will be interesting to see which one of BOS/MIA/CHI end up with the 3 seed.
