Football / Sunderland make relegation contingency plans

Sunderland make contingency plans

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has revealed that his players will take a 40% wage cut if they are relegated.

The Black Cats are just three points off the Premier League drop zone and facing a tough run-in.

"We've secured minimum wage cuts of 40% on every player and every contract," Quinn told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Obviously some players won't come down with us, and their agents won't let them, but for us as a business it wouldn't be catastrophic."

He added: "It would be catastrophic for morale and fans, but we'd still be in better shape than when we took over."

We're thrilled with what he's done up until now... it was an enormous task we gave him
Quinn on Sbragia
Quinn has also moved to clarify the future of manager Ricky Sbragia, who signed an 18-month deal in December following the departure of Roy Keane.

Quinn had been quoted as calling Sbragia "a halfway-house option", but the former Arsenal and Republic of Ireland striker added: "I meant I didn't want to give him six months and say you're under pressure to keep us up.

"I also didn't want to give him three-and-a-half years and face a possible compensation payout if things didn't go right for us.

"That was a tough decision, but I was convinced at the time it was the right one. Time will tell whether it was or not."

Neil Desperandum
Quinn added he was happy with the job Sbragia has done so far.

"It's my preference that he keeps us up and we extend the contract," said Quinn.

"We're thrilled with what he's done up until now. It was an enormous task we gave him.

"He brought the calmness we needed, got players believing in themselves again and made real progress."

General Discussion / First black FTSE 100 boss at Prudential
« on: March 20, 2009, 07:31:27 AM »
First black FTSE 100 boss at Pru

Tidjane Thiam will become chief executive of Prudential in October, becoming the first black head of a FTSE 100 company.

Mr Thiam joined Prudential from Aviva in 2007 and is now finance director at the firm. He will replace Mark Tucker.

Originally from the Ivory Coast, Mr Thiam had previously been the country's Minister of Planning and Development.

Mr Thiam will be one of a limited number of ethnic minorities who are represented in the UK's boardrooms.

Earlier than expected

THIAM'S CAREER SO FAR
March 2009: Named successor to Prudential CEO Mark Tucker
March 2008: Appointed executive director of Prudential and Chief Financial Officer
Chief executive, Europe at insurance giant Aviva
Partner with management consultants McKinsey & Company in France
Chief executive and then chairman of the National Bureau for Technical Studies and Development, Ivory Coast
Minister of Planning and Development, Ivory Coast

Mr Thiam, 46, will take up the reigns as chief executive on October after Mr Tucker, 51, announced that he would step down earlier than expected.

Mr Tucker has led the company for four-and-a-half years and has been at Prudential for 25 years.

Commenting on his appointment Mr Thiam said: "It is a privilege to be a successor. In the meantime, I'm the chief financial officer and I have a job to do, that is what I intend to focus on in the next six months."

An avid Arsenal supporter, he studied engineering in Paris and obtained an MBA from INSEAD. Before working at Aviva for five years, he was employed at McKinsey's Paris offices.

Mr Thiam joins the few ethnic minorities such as Damon Buffini, boss of private equity firm Permira, represented in the UK's boardrooms.

"He is immensely charming," said ING equities analyst Kevin Ryan.

"He has a brain the size of two solar systems, he is a very, very clever bloke," he added.

General Discussion / What de jail? Boy, 8, get A-level maths A
« on: March 13, 2009, 06:54:01 AM »
wtf? i know nuff big man getting D.

i never take no A level exam though as i drop outta school. i hear it hard.

Story from BBC NEWS:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/uk_news/england/hampshire/7941327.stm

Boy, 8, sets A-level maths record

A boy from Hampshire is thought be the youngest person to pass maths A-level with an A grade.

Zohaib Ahmed from Chandler's Ford sat the A-level exam when he was eight. He was nine when the result came through.

He beat the record held by Hong Kong prodigy March Boedihardjo who was nine years and three months old when he sat exams to get an A in maths in 2007.

Zohaib's 11-year-old brother Wajih, scored 96% in his further maths A-level examination.

Zohaib, who goes to Knightwood Primary School with his brother, said he was really happy at breaking the record after scoring 90% in his A-level.

'Playing football'

"I was really surprised but I was confident," he added.

"It felt really strange to be sat with big people in there with me.

"I revised three to five hours on a weekend and one to three hours during the week."

His ambition is to work in the City as an actuary specialising in pensions and insurance.

His brother Wajih said: "My parents helped me out a lot.

"My dad taught me some maths and my mum sorted everything out.

"I couldn't have done it without them."

The boys' mother believes the achievements are down to good planning and hard work.

But they also have plenty of leisure time to play computer games and watch television.

Saadia Ahmed said: "I would look to see they on target and then work through it.

"They like playing around and football and we made sure they had a lot of time playing."

Football / Robbery police target Everton footballer
« on: March 12, 2009, 08:04:19 AM »
this sound like racial profiling to me.

Premier League striker Victor Anichebe was challenged by police looking for a gang of robbers, as he looked in a jeweller's window with a friend.

The innocent Everton player, who was wearing a leg cast after surgery, is now demanding an apology.

Cheshire police said they acted because there had been a series of violent robberies in the area.

During a "heated dialogue" between the two men and officers in Knutsford, Anichebe's friend was handcuffed.

Everton FC spokesman Ian Ross said: "Victor was deeply upset and very distressed by the incident.

"I believe he is still waiting for a full and unreserved apology from the police involved.

"Once he has received that both the club and the player will consider the matter closed."

'Acting suspiciously'

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "For some time Cheshire Constabulary have been responding to a series of violent robberies targeting jewellers in Knutsford and in the wider Cheshire area.

“ During the course of this exchange, an officer took the decision to restrain one of the two men concerned by applying handcuffs ”
Spokesman, Cheshire Police

"We have robust plans in place to respond swiftly to any report of any suspicious activity at or in the vicinity of jewellers' premises.

"As part of that plan, local CCTV operators identified what appeared to be two men acting suspiciously outside a jeweller's store on King Street.

"Police attended the location within minutes and upon speaking with the two men, a heated dialogue developed in an attempt to ascertain exactly what the two persons were doing outside the jeweller's premises.

"During the course of this exchange, an officer took the decision to restrain one of the two men concerned by applying handcuffs.

"It was subsequently ascertained that there was no criminal conduct whatsoever on behalf of the two men concerned and they were in no way involved in any criminal activity."

Football / C.D. Marathon (HON) vs. Puerto Rico Islanders (PUR)
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:36:19 AM »
http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=goal_ccl_wednesday_quarterfinal&prov=goal&type=lgns

Who: C.D. Marathon (HON) vs. Puerto Rico Islanders (PUR)

When: 8:00 pm ET, Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Where: Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano, San Pedro Sula, Honduras

T.V.: Fox Soccer Channel/ Galavision
ADVERTISEMENT

The first leg in Bayamon last Wednesday saw two teams clearly out to score goals. The Puerto Rico Islanders and C.D. Marathon put a combined 27 shots on target. Fittingly, it was the USL side that held a 2-1 advantage in shots, and finished the match as 2-1 winners.

The return leg will likely be very similar with Marathon in need of a win to advance to the semifinal round of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Colin Clarke’s men travel to Honduras with the luxury if needing only a draw to advance to the next round, but playing Marathon in San Pedro Sula is no easy task. The Hondurans are unbeaten at home in the CCL having won all three group matches in Honduras while not conceding a single goal.

For their part, the Islanders have had some success in their CCL travels, losing only once and earning two vital points in the group stage while playing as the visitors.

Marathon will be looking to find some help for Jerry Nelson Palacios on the attacking side. The striker was the brightest player on the pitch during the first leg, but got little support from strike partner Saul Martinez.

Another problem for the Green Monsters in the first leg was controlling the Islander midfield partnership of Petter Villegas and Jonathan Steele. The reigning USL Player of the year and veteran Ecuadorian winger controlled the match fairly well for Puerto Rico in the first leg, outplaying Marathon ’s midfield and largely determining the pace of play.

If Marathon wants to turn the tides Mariano Acevedo and captain Mario Berrios will have to slow the Islanders rush through midfield, and find a way to link more with Palacios rather than just sending balls over the top.

Players To Watch

Puerto Rico Islanders: Kendall Jagdeosingh. The 22-year-old came on as a sub in the first-leg and proved to be the difference maker with his pace and skill on the ball.

C.D. Marathon: Saul Martinez. At 33-years-old, Martinez may be past him best years, but the big striker will need to be at his best to help Marathon find more of the ball in the attacking third.

Goal.com Prediction: Puerto Rico did the business at home and has a solid record on the road in the CCL. It goes against the flow of these quarterfinals, but the Islanders will do just enough to pass into the semifinals. Marathon 1-1 Puerto Rico Islander

Football / LA Galaxy Supposedly Want Ronaldinho for Beckham

this according to fox sports.

it say dinho eh want to play in MLS as that go be bye bye to the national side for he and the level of MLS not respected in europe or south america.

i hope he go MLS for my entertainment pleasure though.

http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/9202952/Chivas-USA-y-L.A.-siguen-buscando-refuerzos

General Discussion / FOR SALE: Bob Marley
« on: February 11, 2009, 09:04:42 AM »
Marley for sale as family cash in
By Ian Youngs
Music reporter, BBC News

Bob Marley drinks, luggage, stationery, hotels and video games could soon appear after the late reggae star's family struck a merchandise deal.

"We're open to licensing just about anything," said the late reggae icon's daughter Cedella. But she added: "If it is not right, we will not do it."

The family has teamed up with private equity firm Hilco to capitalise on his name and songs and to stop bootleggers.

A Bob Marley lager and coffee will be among the first items on the market.

Headphones, snowboards, shoes, musical instruments and electronics are on a list of other products that will be developed in a major expansion of Marley's official merchandise range.

Some will bear the music legend's name and image, while others will be tied in to song titles or lyrics from his best-known tunes.

Cedella Marley, the singer's eldest child, has already published a children's book called Three Little Birds, based on the anthem of the same name, known for its refrain of: "Don't worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing's gonna be all right."

Three Little Birds could be expanded into a range of children's clothes, shoes and toys, she suggested.

Another plan is to open a global chain of One Love cafes where people can "come, eat good Jamaican food, talk about the music, listen to the music, live bands".

"That's something that we've always wanted to explore," Ms Marley told BBC News. "We're talking [about] all over the world - one in London, one in Asia, one in Amsterdam."

There is already a Bob Marley Resort & Spa in the Bahamas, which could be the springboard for a string of Marley hotels.

Ms Marley said interest in her father was growing, almost 30 years after his death. "The things that dad spoke about are still the things that we all need to fix and work on," she said.

"Sometimes when you put on his records it's like he's talking about today, right now.

"The message is still about hope and peace and all of us coming together. That's what makes him special. All of us can relate to him."

The family say they hope to avoid over-commercialising the image and music of Marley, an artist with one of the most cherished and enduring legacies in music.

But they want to feed the demand that has spawned a counterfeit merchandise industry worth an estimated $600m (£415m), and keep control of the star's persona.

"This is a big business for bootleggers," said Ms Marley. "We want to stop some of the nonsense, and make sure the great stuff upholds our standards. We're in control."

Asked whether the family had effectively sold a slice of Marley to the private equity firm, his daughter insisted Hilco had become the family's partners to develop and manage the merchandise.

"Nothing has been sold", she said.

General Discussion / IBM Offers To Move Laid Off Workers To India
« on: February 09, 2009, 10:43:29 AM »
HELL f**k NO! they go keep dem relo package.

Big Blue wants to help redundant U.S. employees relocate to developing markets, according to an internal document.

By Paul McDougall,  InformationWeek
Feb. 2, 2009
URL: http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=213000389

The climate is warm, there's no shortage of exotic food, and the cost of living is rock bottom. That's IBM's pitch to the laid-off American workers it's offering to place in India. The catch: Wages in the country are pennies-on-the-dollar compared to U.S. salaries.

Under a program called Project Match, IBM will help workers laid off from domestic sites obtain travel and visa assistance for countries in which Big Blue has openings. Mostly that's developing markets like India, China, and Brazil.

"IBM has established Project Match to help you locate potential job opportunities in growth markets where your skills are in demand," IBM says in an internal notice on the initiative. "Should you accept a position in one of these countries, IBM offers financial assistance to offset moving costs, provides immigration support, such as visa assistance, and other support to help ease the transition of an international move."

The document states that the program is limited to "satisfactory performers who have been notified of separation from IBM U.S. or Canada and are willing to work on local terms and conditions." The latter indicates that workers will be paid according to prevailing norms in the countries to which they relocate. In many cases, that could be substantially less than what they earned in North America.

IBM has laid off more than 4,000 workers in the United States since the beginning of January, according to an employee group. The company has confirmed layoffs but won't comment on specific numbers.

A spokesman for Alliance@IBM, a workers' group that's affiliated with the Communications Workers of America but which does not have official union status at IBM, slammed the program. "IBM is not only offshoring IBM U.S. jobs but they want employees to offshore themselves through Project Match," said the spokesman.

An IBM spokesman said the program shouldn't be seen in that light. "It's more of a vehicle for people who want to expand their life experience by working somewhere else," said the spokesman. "A lot of people want to work in India."

In addition to India, China, and Brazil, IBM is offering to relocate redundant U.S. workers to a number of other developing markets, including Mexico, the Czech Republic, Russia, South Africa, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates, according to the notice, which was obtained Monday by InformationWeek.

Rape trio sentence to be reviewed

The Attorney General is reviewing the sentencing of three rapists who threw caustic soda over their victim, after criticism that it was too lenient.

The 16-year-old girl, who has a mental age of eight, was repeatedly raped in north London. The men received jail terms of up to nine years each.

The Attorney General can refer the sentencing to the Court of Appeal if she feels it was "unduly lenient".

Disability charities said the sentences sent out "the wrong message".

The girl, who has learning difficulties, was in a coma following the attack at a flat in Seven Sisters, north London, in January 2008.

She has been left with burns to more than 50% of her body.

One of the men, Rogel McMorris, 18, from Seven Sisters, was jailed for nine years for two counts of rape and grievous bodily harm at Wood Green Crown Court on Monday.

Co-defendants Jason Brew, 19, from Tottenham, north London, and Hector Muaimba, 20, from Walthamstow, east London, were jailed for six years each for the rape. Muaimba was given a further two-year term for a separate robbery.

A spokesman for Attorney General Baroness Scotland's office said: "We have asked the Crown Prosecution Service for the papers in the case so the law officers can consider whether the sentence is one that should be referred to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient."

Earlier Deborah Kitson, director of The Ann Craft Trust, said victims with learning difficulties often faced hurdles in getting justice.

"Most people don't realise that people with learning disabilities are more likely to be victims of rape," she said.

"They can also face lots of hurdles in getting justice and fear not being believed if they come forward. Sentences such as this can damage people's confidence in the courts."

Football / Who Want to Sponsor A Football Team?
« on: January 20, 2009, 01:26:19 PM »
i know one looking for money.

MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Sahara, a leading Indian business conglomerate, is among the contenders to replace AIG as Manchester United’s shirt sponsor starting with the 2010-11 season.

AIG is in the process of restructuring its business and shedding assets to raise funds despite receiving a $150 billion bailout last year from the U.S. government. The company, which already ended its decade-long sponsorship of the U.S. Davis Cup team, hasn’t said whether it intends to try to renew its Manchester United deal, worth 19 million pounds ($27 million) annually.

Sahara, which has interests in financial services, publishing and real estate, sponsors the Indian cricket team.

“We’ve received an elaborate sponsorship proposal from Manchester United, which we are considering,” Sahara’s spokesman Abhijit Sarkar told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

With United one of the world’s most marketable clubs, with stars such Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

“Eighteen months out on the current deal, we have to think about production if the shirt sponsorship is going to change,” United spokesman Phil Townsend said. “It is prudent housekeeping, just what we would normally do this distance out from a shirt deal expiring. We are in dialogue with a select number of companies worldwide.”

AP Sports Writer Sandeep Nakai in New Delhi contributed to this report.

Football / FIFA kicks off bidding for 2018, 2022 World Cups
« on: January 15, 2009, 02:15:15 PM »
FIFA kicked off the bidding process Thursday to stage the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

FIFA has set a Feb. 2 deadline for potential hosts to register their interest at the start of a two-year process combining the bidding for both tournaments. The two hosts will be chosen by FIFA’s 24-man executive committee in December 2010.

Candidates must provide about 12 stadiums holding at least 40,000 fans for group matches, with one stadium of at least 80,000 capacity to stage the opening match and the final.

FIFA said Thursday that “the very highest standards of TV broadcasting, information and telecommunications technology, transport and accommodation are an absolute must” for applicants to meet.

The requirements and timetable have been sent to all eligible member national associations.

Countries confirmed to bid for hosting in 2018 are Australia, England, Qatar and Russia, plus joint bids from Belgium-Netherlands-Luxembourg and Spain-Portugal.

Other bids are expected from the United States, China, Japan, Mexico and Canada.

Bid registrations forms go out Feb. 16, and are due March 16. Potential hosts can apply for either the 2018 or the 2022 World Cups, or for both.

No South American country can apply for either tournament because Brazil is hosting the 2014 tournament.

African countries can only bid for the 2022 event because South Africa is hosting in 2010.

A total of 145 countries are eligible to host the 2018 edition, with 198 possible applicants for 2022.

Football / The perils of turning 30

ah like the comments e.g.

"#2 - Russel Latapy!! 40 years old, 40 fags an hour, still plays as laconically as he did at 25!!

Dwight Yorke didn't exactly lead a "model life" off the park either."

This week I have reached the career threshold that all footballers dread. I have turned 30.

There is no getting away from it, it is quite a milestone and from a personal point of view it has given me a chance to reflect on my career.

On more than one occasion, I was more than a little sceptical as to whether I would still be involved in the game when I got to 30. So from that perspective I am pleased to say that I have achieved this.

Where did the time go (see I already sound like an old man!)?

I remember thinking when I was a 16-year-old YTS at Coventry City that if I played football more or less everyday until I was 30, I would be brilliant! Unfortunately, for various reasons it has not quite panned out like that but it has been a heck of a journey and I am sure there are still a few twists and turns ahead.

The big question I have been asking myself is, where do I go from here?

In the not too distant past, reaching the age of 30 was basically considered to be the beginning of the end of a footballer's career. However times and also attitudes have changed. Players today can comfortably carry on into their mid-30's.

There are numerous reasons for this. One is that players are now better educated in looking after their bodies, both in terms of the food they eat on a day-to-day basis and also the physical fitness programmes that we follow.

From my own perspective I am not that concerned about losing my pace because as I have mentioned before, it is not an attribute I have in abundance!. In fact if I got any slower , I would be going in reverse!

Another reason is that there have been significant advances in the medical side of the game. For example, in years gone by, a cruciate ligament injury meant almost certain retirement for a player. Now you can be fully rehabilitated and back playing in little more than six months.

It is not just the actual treatment for injuries that has improved but also the injury prevention methods now employed at clubs. For example, after I recovered from my hamstring injuries, it was not just a case of going back training and hoping that the injury would not come back.

I was given a set programme to follow that includes various different exercises, some that increase the strength in the hamstring and some that increase the flexibility of the muscle. It is not a 100% guarantee but at least you are being pro-active in the prevention of future injuries.

Many precedents have been set by players playing well into their 30's, with many actually making these twilight years their most successful. I have had the pleasure to play with some of them over the years, the likes of Steve Ogrizovic, Roland Nilsson, Gary McAllister, Kevin Richardson, David Burrows, Brian Borrows and closer to home my old man.

At the time I respected these players but now I think of them more as an inspiration. Please let me know of any players that you know of, who enjoyed the best years of their careers after they reached 30. From my point of view the more you can think of, the better!.

All of these players influenced me in a positive manner but I would have to single out Roland Nilsson as the one who influenced me the most. Roland was simply the ultimate professional and one of the most under-rated players I have ever come across.

nilsson438.jpg

When I say under-rated, I mean in the public domain because he was certainly not under-rated by his team-mates, so much so his nickname around the club was quite simply 'legend'.

I now look back on those days and wonder what kept Roland going? What kept him being the fittest guy in the squad even when he was the oldest, what kept him going to the gym after training when the rest of us were on the way home?

My opinion is that it was his professional pride, the desire to not let his performance levels dip and ultimately putting in the hours to make sure this did not happen - something which I am going to have to take on board in order to extend my own playing career.

Staying on the subject of fitness, people often ask me how do the fitness facilities in the lower leagues compare to that of the Premier League? The answer is that there is a big difference, simply because of the cost involved in acquiring the latest equipment .

At Notts County we might just have found a solution to this problem. We have recently been introduced to a product called "TRX" . The fitness coach described it to me as a complete body workout that you hang from the door. Us footballers are a sceptical bunch, so straight away, I was thinking "here we go another gimmick" but I have to say, I have been proved wrong.

The story behind the product is that it was designed by someone in the SAS (instantly got me listening!) who realised that soldiers who were posted at locations around the world where there was no fitness equipment rapidly became unfit. So he created this bit of kit that they could hang on tanks or trees so the soldiers could get a good workout .

Obviously there are no tanks at Meadow Lane but suffice to say this piece of equipment is now an integral part of the fitness regime at our club because of the quality of work we can get done with something that can fit within the tight financial constraints of a League Two club .
