Football / New Caribbean league created for clubs
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:17:08 PM »
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP)—A new Caribbean league involving clubs across the region will be launched next year, the Puerto Rico football federation said on Friday.

Clubs from Trinidad, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Haiti, Bermuda, Antigua, Guyana, Dominica and others will participate, though it is too early to say what the format will look like or how many games will be played each year.

Joe Serralta, president of Puerto Rico’s Football Federation, said he has been pushing for the league’s creation since 2004.

“With a population of more than 40 million people, this Caribbean league can and should be developed as one of the most important of the CONCACAF,” Serralta said.

Caribbean officials needed the United Soccer Leagues—the largest organization of elite-level soccer in North America, but which also oversees leagues in Canada and the Caribbean—to agree to the creation of the new competition.

The agreement between the USL and the Puerto Rico Soccer League will give the island’s eight club teams—plus the USL-level Puerto Rico Islanders—an opportunity for more games and exposure.

Football / Honduras coach may quit over unpaid bonus
« on: March 26, 2010, 12:14:03 PM »
this sound familiar.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP)—Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda hinted on Friday he may quit if he and his World Cup-bound team are not paid a $1.3 million bonus promised by the country’s football federation for reaching the World Cup.

Rafael Leonardo Callejas, president of the Honduran federation, has acknowledged the players and staff are owed the money and says he’s hoping to make the payment within a week. He has not explained why the payment is late.

Honduras has three friendly matches in May and June in Europe before traveling to South Africa to play in Group H with Spain, Chile and Switzerland.

“The players want to be relaxed going into May and I want to go to Europe with a group concentrated on the job before them,” Rueda, a Colombian, said.

“I hope this happens and it does not influence my decision to stay with the national team.”

Team captain Amado Guevara added: “We are working hard and we want the authorities to change their attitude … even though we don’t know why they have not paid us.”

Forward Carlos Pavon suggested the world governing body of football FIFA had made a recent payment of about $1 million to the Honduran federation.

“We’re not happy,” Pavon said.

Honduras will have a training camp beginning about May 15 in Europe and will play friendly matches against Azerbaijan, Belarus and Romania before traveling to South Africa. Honduras was the third qualifier from North and Central American and the Caribbean behind the United States and Mexico.

This is the second World Cup for the small Central American country. In 1982 Honduras failed to win any of its three games.

Football / 26 MLS players living in poverty
« on: March 18, 2010, 06:48:39 AM »
Have a whip-round! 26 MLS players living in poverty!

That’s the “goal bonus” sticking out… perhaps

Of course, Premier League players take it all for granted. Just look at Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips - both recently reported to be kicking up a fuss because they only get about £80,000/week for occasionally playing a bit of footie.

But, over in America, recent salary reports make for slightly less glamourous reading. At the last count, 26 MLS players were earning just $20,100/year for their services - converted into Her Royal Highness’s chosen currency, that’s around £13,243.72/year. To the nearest pence.

It’s a world away from Becksie’s $32million (£21million) for five seasons - which works out at around £4million/season, maths fans. And even falls way below the calculated average US annual salary of around £33,115.24.

These men are literally living on or below the breadline. Hence the players union is considering some kind of strike.

Here is a list of those in the greatest need:

CHICAGO FIRE
Peter Lowry
Austin Washington

CHIVAS USA
Justin Braun
Gerson Mayen
Chukwudi Chijindu
Lance Parker

COLUMBUS CREW
Kevin Burns
Alex Grendi
Cory Elenio

COLORADO RAPIDS
Michael Holody
Ross Schunk

DC UNITED
Milos Kočić
Brandon Barklage
John DiRaimondo

HOUSTON DYNAMO
Erik Ustruck

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS
Matt Marquess

THE GALAXY
Kyle Patterson

NEW YORK RED BULLS
Danleigh Borman
Nick Zimmerman
Matthew M’Buta

REAL SALT LAKE
Raphael Cox
Tino Nunez

SEATTLE SOUNDERS
Sanna Nyassi

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
Brandon McDonald
Michael Zaher

TORONTO FC
Gabe Gala
Now you know why some claim that MLS stand for Must Leave Soonest.

Striker Fuller held over incident

Premier League footballer Ricardo Fuller was arrested on suspicion of assault after an incident in a Stoke-on-Trent nightclub.

The Stoke City striker was held during the early hours of Sunday following an incident in the JFK Nightclub in Trinity Street, Hanley.

A spokesman for Stoke City, who beat Blackburn 3-0 at home on Saturday, confirmed the arrest.

Police said a 30-year-old man was arrested and later bailed.

Stoke City said it would not release any further comment.

The Jamaican international, who joined Stoke City in August 2006, is due to report back to police next month.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said officers were called to the nightclub at about 0100 GMT.

She said the 21-year-old victim suffered minor facial injuries and did not need hospital treatment.

She urged any witnesses to contact police.

Mr Fuller was in the team that defeated Blackburn on Saturday.

what would the trini version look like?

http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=goal-tophowthehelldidtheygetsoma&prov=goal&type=lgns

It is widely accepted that Brazil is the best producer of footballing talent in the world, and indeed it is difficult to find a top flight club team anywhere that hasn’t possessed a Brazilian at some point in recent years.

Another unique phenomenon surrounding the South American nation is just how many players have been capped by the Selecao. With Brazil organising numerous friendlies each year, this has often led to obscure, local, and less than prestigious names receiving international call-ups.

10) Amaral - 31 caps

This centre midfielder was a grave digger before he began his footballing career, and some cynics would suggest that along with the earth and the worms Amaral found himself 31 Brazil caps. Despite brief spells at Parma, Fiorentina and Benfica, the schemer was never a headliner. He also never played in a World Cup, Copa America or Confederations Cup.

9) Edilson - 25 caps

A productive goalscorer in his homeland during the nineties and early noughties, the only success Ederson had abroad was in Japan and the United Arab Emirates. Given the presence of the likes of Romario, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Bebeto, the pint-sized forward did well to earn a quarter-of-a-century of caps.

8) Kleberson - 31 caps

Raised eyebrows before he joined Manchester United in 2003 when he announced that he was set to marry his 15-year-old girlfriend when she turned 16. Going from young bride to Old Trafford proved too much for Kleberson as he was an unequivocal flop with the Red Devils. Now at Flamengo, the 30-year-old has still managed to rack up 31 appearances for Brazil, as well as a 2002 World Cup winners medal.

7) Savio - 44 caps

Savio was not lacking in ability, and indeed he was an under-rated member for Real Madrid between 1998 and 2003, winning three Champions League titles. But, for someone who never made a World Cup squad, and hasn’t featured at national level for 10 years, it is hard to work out just where the tricky winger’s 44 caps came from.

6) Ricardinho - 23 caps

A Brazilian who travelled to two World Cups you would expect to be a household name, but not Ricardinho who only really succeeded in Europe on the legendary Championship Manager 97/98 computer game. In real life, he failed at Bordeaux and Middlesbrough, spending most of his career in his homeland.

5) Doriva - 35 caps

Remember Doriva? Probably not. He was a centre midfielder with less identity than a home crowd at a Wigan Athletic match. Despite recently retiring it is difficult to describe what kind of player the former Sampdoria and Middlesbrough man was. He sat on the centre circle, and was neat and tidy in a Liverpool Lucas kind of way, but what exactly did he do? Well, he won 35 caps for Brazil - that is what he did!

4) Ze Maria - 43 caps

His name is repeated a billion times a day in Italy, but only because there are a lot of Auntie Marias in the peninsula. Spent the best part of a decade in Serie A with Parma, Perugia and Inter where he was a decent if inconsistent performer at right back. Just how he managed to make 43 appearances with the Brazil shirt, though, is a real mystery when you consider that not only did he never appear in a World Cup but that he had 142-cap record holder Cafu ahead of him in the queue. Obviously played a lot of ‘Pele’ friendlies against Guatemala and the Cook Islands.

3) Roque Junior - 48 caps

He may have a cool name, but there was nothing 'bad' about Roque Junior on the football pitch. Well, actually there was! The centre back was a catastrophe waiting to happen whenever he donned the Milan or Brazil shirt, committing numerous errors in the last line of defence. Helped prolong the myth that all Brazilian defenders were rubbish, winning 48 caps and a World Cup winners medal along the way.

2) Vampeta - 39 caps

In second place we have the midfielder whose name translates as ‘Vampire-devil’. One of Inter president Massimo Moratti’s many disastrous signings, Vampeta will be remembered as one of the biggest flops in Serie A history during his time at San Siro at the beginning of the millennium. Indeed he is more noted for not only being involved in the swap deal that took Flamengo’s Adriano to Inter, but also for being the first Brazilian footballer to pose totally naked for a LGBT magazine. Somehow he still won 39 caps for Brazil, and was a benchwarmer during the 2002 World Cup win.

1) Serginho Chulapa - 20 caps

Brazil 1982 are the greatest team never to have won the World Cup, containing a whole host of legendary players such as Zico, Falcao, Socrates, Eder and Junior, and playing some mesmerising football before they were eliminated 3-2 by Italy in a classic clash. For all these brilliant champions, Brazil ’82 also contained a striker described by Sir Bobby Charlton as a "Sunday League player". The 6ft-plus hitman was lanky, clumsy, and so un-Brazilian he could have been the lovechild of Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch. He won 20 caps, but also lost the Selecao the World Cup.

The members of FIFPro spoke in detail about the situation of the football players in the USA, where the Major League Soccer refuses to abide by FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP). At their general assembly in Budapest, Hungary, the FIFPro members drew up a resolution.

During the last year the MLS Players Union has held talks with the MLS, as the current collective bargaining agreement is to expire on 1 February 2010. The Players Union has proposed that the MLS must abide by the RSTP, as every professional league in the world does.

Football / Mexico Striker Antonio De Nigris Dead @ 31 from Heart Problem
« on: November 16, 2009, 09:13:09 AM »
LARISSA, Greece (AP)—A Mexican soccer player died after suffering from apparent heart problems at his home in central Greece, officials from a state hospital and his Greek club Larissa said Monday.

Antonio De Nigris, a striker who joined the Greek league team earlier this season, was 31.

A state coroner said preliminary findings from an autopsy indicated heart problems but that further examination was required. A club statement said De Nigris died early Monday.

Larissa spokesman Christos Tsoumaris said De Nigris’ wife contacted the club after her husband felt ill early Monday.

“We are still trying to understand what happened,” Tsoumaris said. “Our thoughts are with his wife and young daughter.”

De Nigris, who previously played at Spanish club Villarreal, played for the Turkish club Ankaragucu before moving to Larissa, which plays in the 16-team Greek league.

General Discussion / Africans 'under siege' in Moscow
« on: August 31, 2009, 10:50:12 AM »
pure wickedness.

big up to the BBC for putting this on their front page today.

 Africans 'under siege' in Moscow

Nearly 60% of black and African people living in Russia's capital Moscow have been physically assaulted in racially motivated attacks, says a new study.

Africans working or studying in the city live in constant fear of attack, according to the report by the Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy.

A quarter of 200 people surveyed said they had been assaulted more than once. Some 80% had been verbally abused.

But the number of assaults was down from the MPC's last survey in 2002.

The report's clear conclusion was that Africans living in Russia exist in a state of virtual siege, says the BBC's Rupert Wingfield Hayes in Moscow.

Extreme violence

Many of the African respondents said they:
Avoided using the Moscow metro
Were also careful to avoid crowded public places
Did not go out on Russian national holidays or on days when there were football matches

Many of the attacks on Africans were pre-meditated and extremely violent, the report found.

One Nigerian migrant interviewed by the BBC had been repeatedly stabbed in the back and then shot.

Another man said his attacker had attempted to remove his scalp.

Officially there are some 10,000 Africans living in Moscow, but far more are believed to live there illegally - many as economic migrants.

The Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy is an English-speaking interdenominational Christian congregation that has ministered to Moscow's foreign community since 1962.

The robbers were found wearing shoes belonging to the Jamaicans.

The suspects, aged 18, 19 and 21, were arrested on the weekend by members of the Central Division Robbery Unit, led by Sgt Nobbie and including detectives Lyndon Hosein, Leeshend Hosein and Adjodha Chapdeosingh.

The three were linked to robberies in Montrose, Chaguanas. The Jamaicans were detained until immigration officers could come to get them when they were robbed of cash, jewelry, and two pairs of shoes.

Alert after Tobago machete attack

A fresh warning about violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago had been issued by the Foreign Office after a Somerset couple were attacked with a machete.

Peter Green, 65, and his wife Mirium, 59, who are from Wellington, were seriously hurt in Saturday's attack at their Tobago home.

New advice says "there are high levels of violent crime, especially shootings and kidnappings".

It adds law enforcement is "weak" in Tobago and Britons have been targeted.

Mr and Mrs Green were airlifted to a regional medical centre in Trinidad, where they are receiving treatment. Mr Green's brother Edgar, 74, who lives near Truro in Cornwall, said he could not understand why anyone would want to use a machete.

He said: "Why would someone try to kill someone? If they are trying to rob someone then rob them - this is attempted murder."

Mrs Green is reported locally to have regained consciousness after the attack while her husband is still said to be in a medically-induced coma after being struck on the head.

'Another serious attack'

Both remained in a serious condition in the Eric Williams Medical Complex on Trinidad, the Trinidad and Tobago Express said.

No arrests have been made but police said they had received several tip-offs about the crime.

It is thought the couple have been living in the town of Bacolet on Tobago's southern coast on and off for the past 10 years.

It is about seven miles (11.3km) from where Swedish couple Anna Sundsval, 62, and Oke Olsoon, 73, were killed last year in a similar attack.

Tobago Police Superintendent Nadir Khan described the crime as "another serious attack on tourists".

Eight killings have been reported on Tobago so far this year, compared with four in 2008.

The more developed island of Trinidad has reported 321 killings.

Carol Ann Birchwood James, president of the Tobago Hotel Association, said: "News... of this attack has gone around the world.

"We are therefore in danger of losing out, especially our UK guests."

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO - CHRIS BIRCHALL

The first white player in the Trinidad & Tobago side for 60 years, Chris Birchall cemented his hero status on the islands when he scored in the World Cup play-off in Bahrain in 2005.

It helped propel the national team to their first World Cup and the supporters made up a rap song in his honour. "The place has gone crazy," he said at the time.

Birchall was eligible to play for Trinidad and Tobago because his grandparents moved to the islands to work and his mother, Jennifer, was born in Port of Spain.

He was selected when the team's Dutch coach, Leo Beenhakker, learned of his eligiblity.

The Stafford-born midfielder was playing for Port Vale at the time, but the attention he drew during the World Cup - especially in the build-up to playing England in the group stages - helped him seal a move to Coventry.

He has now joined LA Galaxy and he replaced someone called David Beckham when he made his debut in May.

Microsoft would be Chelsea All the money in the world but it's all come recently. They play to a precise, predictable formula and the only *loyal* fans work in City finance operations.

Google would be Arsenal Fancy footwork, nice location in central London, clever ideas and easy on the eye. The players are all young but a lot of the time all the good work goes nowhere. Best players have recently ended up demanding transfers.

IBM would be Manchester United Old money and great tradition. Everybody ends up going there in the end, even if they don't like them.

Xerox would be Newcastle United Wonderful people, loads of money for researching ways to win top prizes but they end up with nothing apart from a famous home and lots of old people saying how great bthey were once.

Oracle would be Real Madrid Forceful leader reeking of money, fine wine and cigars. The strategy is to buy anything that moves. It usually works in the end.

Red Hat would be Manchester City Started out with odds and ends donated by local community but somehow ended up with loads of money flooding in.

Yahoo would be Barcelona Would turn down fortunes rather than trade their precious independence. Usually regarded as a mad world of their own by outsiders but capable of brilliance on the day.

Salesforce.com would be Inter Milan Led by a power-loving maverick and brilliant tactician, they are quite possibly the next best team in the world.

Symantec would be Tottenham Hotspur Invented the idea of pouring money into acquisitions to bolster the squad and still doing it to this day.

Sun would be MK Dons Sold their soul for filthy lucre and may lose the guts of the old club and community spirit. Business plan might be sound but will fans stay loyal?

Apple would be Liverpool Icons of the modern era and since the 1970s treated as a cult by devoted followers the world over. Finances might appear odd at times though and god only knows where would they be without Stevie.

Adobe would be Everton Dogged and outperforming but they only have one plan and they live in the shadow of a bigger and better bunch just down the road.

Satyam would be Juventus Overshadowed by events off the pitch recently but write them off at your peril.

Mahalo would be Hull City Run on the basis of every man doing his damnedest and working together to compete with big boys. Managed by an odd little chap who can't stop talking.

Wolfram Research would be Queens Park Rangers You'd forgotten they existed but they reckon they're going to be massive.

CA would be AC Milan Huge, historic outfit that will never go away or stop buying.

Novell would be Leeds United They used to be huge when I were a lad.

nice write-up about laurie cunningham on the bbc football front page today. i don't think i ever see him play though. looking for video.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8149282.stm

Exactly 20 years ago, on 15 July 1989, one of the most remarkable careers in English football history came to a sudden and tragic end in a car crash on the outskirts of Madrid.

Laurie Cunningham was only 33 when he died and spent most of the peak years of his career playing abroad.

But what he did on the pitch, and the changes he helped bring about off it, left a lasting impact on the English game.

Rejected by Arsenal, he began his professional career at Leyton Orient in 1974 and within five years he became the first Englishman to play for Real Madrid.

His amazing journey from Brisbane Road to the Bernabeu went via West Brom, where the winger became the first black player capped by England at any level and, along with defender Brendan Batson and striker Cyrille Regis, formed the legendary 'Three Degrees' partnership....

Two men have been jailed after becoming the first in the UK to be convicted of inciting racial hatred online.

Simon Sheppard, 51, of Selby in North Yorkshire, received four years and 10 months, and Stephen Whittle, 42, of Preston, two years and four months.

The men printed leaflets and controlled websites featuring racist material.

They fled to the US after being convicted of race-hate offences at a trial at Leeds Crown Court last year, but failed in an asylum bid.

Sheppard, of Brook Street, Selby, was found guilty of 11 offences and Whittle, of Avenham Lane, Preston, was found guilty of five offences at a trial in July last year.

Sheppard was convicted of a further five charges in January 2009.

However, before the jury in the first trial could return verdicts, both men fled to Los Angeles International airport and attempted to claim political asylum.

Their bid was thrown out by a US immigration judge.

The men were charged with publishing and distributing racially inflammatory material, and possessing racially inflammatory material with a view to distribution.

Leeds Crown Court was told Whittle wrote offensive articles that were then published on the internet by Sheppard.

The published material included images of murdered Jews alongside cartoons and articles ridiculing ethnic groups.

Judge Rodney Grant told the men their material was "abusive and insulting" and had the potential to cause "grave social harm".

He added: "Such offences as these have, by their very nature, the potential to cause grave social harm, particularly in a society such as ours which has, for a number of years now, been multi-racial.

'Groundbreaking case'

"These are serious offences. I can say without any hesitation that I have rarely seen, or had to read or consider, material which is so abusive and insulting... towards racial groups within our own society."

The investigation into Sheppard began when a complaint about a leaflet, called "Tales of the Holohoax", was reported to police in 2004 after it was pushed through the door of a synagogue in Blackpool.

It was traced back to a post office box in Hull registered to Sheppard.

Humberside Police later found a website featuring racially inflammatory material.

The force's Adil Khan, head of diversity and community cohesion, said: "This case is groundbreaking.

"It involved Humberside Police along with our colleagues from other forces.

"Inciting racial hatred is a crime and one which seems to occur too regularly. This kind of material will not be tolerated as this lengthy investigation shows."
