http://www.thespoiler.co.uk/index.php/2009/07/06/video-brazilian-legend-falcao-scores-the-best-indoor-football-goal-of-all-time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIahQ0o7oyY

Falcão (the former Roma star regarded as one of the best midfielders ever, not to be confused with this chap) may have retired from the grass version of the game, but he’s still rockin’ the world of Futsal.

At the recent Grand Prix de Futsal (a huge annual international indoor football tournament), Brazil spanked Romania 12-0, in part thanks to this incredible effort. Marca are hailing it as the greatest indoor football goal ever, and we’re inclined to agree.

The goal is made even more incredible by the fact that Falcão is 55-years-old. Most 25-year-olds don’t look that good.

Nigaz name sparks racism debate

A marketing blunder in Nigeria has got online communities all of a twitter, after a joint oil and gas venture with Russia was named Nigaz.

Russia's Gazprom and Nigeria's state-operated NNPC formed the company - pronounced "nye-gaz" - last week.

Nigerians No Nigaz, a group formed on the social networking site Facebook, says the name could be pronounced in a way offensive to black people.

Users of Twitter have also expressed disbelief at the decision.

"Russian & Nigerian companies have formed new oil firm called... Nigaz. I'm not lying," says Osa Oyegun, under her Twitter name ChocolateMezzo.

The topic has prompted hundreds of tweets.

Henry Makiwa, known as makiwahenry, said: "Lol [laugh out loud] of the day: Russian/Nigerian oil conglomerate has had PR branding blunder after naming joint company 'Nigaz'."

'Bright moment'

Correspondents say despite the hoo-ha caused online, newspapers in Nigeria have not picked up on the story yet.

“ The fact is that whenever there is a blunder like this it delights people, it gives them something to talk about ”
Branding consultant Simon Anholt

Simon Anholt, a top branding consultant who developed the National Brands Index, says this may be because such faux pas are usually "harmless".

"The fact is that whenever there is a blunder like this it delights people, it gives them something to talk about and it gives them a bright moment in what might otherwise be a dull day," he told the BBC Network Africa programme.

He admitted that it could be seen as offensive, but said it was fairly uncommon for companies to change their names.

Such blunders are more common in government-run organisations, he said, "because they simply don't have the marketing experience to check these things out properly".

But he says the fuss is likely to die down.

"People will soon forget that the name sounds bad," he says.

must be the italians.

JOHANNESBURG, June 19 (Reuters) - Egypt’s players returned from their shock Confederations Cup win over world champions Italy to find some of their hotel rooms had been burgled, South African police said on Friday.

“The SAPS can confirm that at about 1am (2300 GMT) this morning, Friday 19 June 2009, members of the Egyptian team reported that their wallets containing cash were missing from their hotel rooms,” police spokeswoman Sally de Beer said in a statement.

“Five members of the team were affected. It must be stressed that they were not present in the hotel rooms at the time of the incident.

“The South African Police Service will take all measures possible, including liaising and cooperating with other role players, to prevent a recurrence of an incident of this nature.”

The Egyptian team were staying at the Protea Hotel Wanderers in Johannesburg and in a statement, the company said: “Protea Hotels has strict security measures in place where electronic access control of the rooms and safes are monitored.

“We are working very closely with the local law enforcement bodies to get to the bottom of this unfortunate incident.”

South Africa’s high crime rate is one of the main challenges facing organisers of the 2010 World Cup, with the Confederations Cup seen as a dress rehearsal the event.

Football / Benfica name Jesus as coach
« on: June 17, 2009, 07:02:57 AM »
i couldn't resist.

LISBON, June 16 (Reuters) - Portuguese club Benfica have named former Braga manager Jorge Jesus as their new coach on a two-year contract, Benfica said in a statement on Tuesday.

Benfica had agreed to pay Braga 700,000 euros to release Jesus from a contract which tied him to the northern club for another season.

Jorge Jesus managed Braga for one season, taking them to fifth place in the Portuguese Premier League and the last 16 of the UEFA Cup for the first time.

Last week Quique Sanchez Flores stepped down as coach of Benfica after the two sides agreed to end the Spaniard’s contract a year early, after one season in charge.

Flores built a squad that included Jose Antonio Reyes, Pablo Aimar and David Suazo, but Benfica could only finish in third place, 11 points behind champions Porto and seven adrift of local rivals Sporting.

excellent read.

Plucked from non-league football with Hillingdon Borough in December 1981, he made his first-team debut four months later, at the age of 20, as a substitute, away at Crystal Palace.
Paul Canonville

Looking back: Canoville recalls how he felt 'physically sick' after being subjected to racist taunts at Chelsea - by the club's own supporters

When he climbed from the bench to warm up, Chelsea supporters screamed: 'Sit down you black c***', 'You f***ing w*g, f*** off'. Then they started to chant: 'We don't want the n****r, we don't want the n****r, la la la la'. A banana landed near his feet.

same resource set but different attitude. this should be T&T.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/14/business/global/14frugal.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss

OSLO — When capitalism seemed on the verge of collapse last fall, Kristin Halvorsen, Norway’s Socialist finance minister and a longtime free market skeptic, did more than crow.

As investors the world over sold in a panic, she bucked the tide, authorizing Norway’s $300 billion sovereign wealth fund to ramp up its stock buying program by $60 billion — or about 23 percent of Norway ’s economic output.

“The timing was not that bad,” Ms. Halvorsen said, smiling with satisfaction over the broad worldwide market rally that began in early March.

The global financial crisis has brought low the economies of just about every country on earth. But not Norway.

With a quirky contrariness as deeply etched in the national character as the fjords carved into its rugged landscape, Norway has thrived by going its own way. When others splurged, it saved. When others sought to limit the role of government, Norway strengthened its cradle-to-grave welfare state.

And in the midst of the worst global downturn since the Depression, Norway’s economy grew last year by just under 3 percent. The government enjoys a budget surplus of 11 percent and its ledger is entirely free of debt....

BUENOS AIRES — Come on, guys. It’s just a game. Right?

Apparently not.

Vendetta gunfights at McDonald's and at private clubhouse parties filled with families. Bystanders stabbed. Heads broken by wood planks. Guys tossed from moving trucks. Disgruntled rival gangs burning cars and breaking windows. Fights for turf control. It all sounds like something out of a mob flick, Mexico's drug war or the slums of Rio de Janeiro.

It’s not. This is Argentine soccer.

According to the organization Salvemos al Futbol — Spanish for “Let’s Save Football” — there have been 235 violent soccer-related deaths over the years in Argentina. Most of the killings have been perpetrated by the so-called “barra bravas,” regimented and thuggish groups of fans notorious for their shady dealings and brutality....

Ledley King is no stranger to the art of drinking too much and starting a fight (see here, here and here), but he massively improved on his own impressive inebriation benchmark on a visit to London’s Punk club on Saturday night. While demanding entry to the Soho nightspot, the classy Tottenham star dished out some racism and violence, which led to a night in the cells. The Sun say:

The Tottenham captain, who had been out in the West End following his team’s 0-0 draw with Everton, spent the night in a sparse cell in a police station.

[Bouncer] Wahib said: “He was so drunk we told him to come back when he was more sober.

“He walked across the road, opened his trousers and urinated all over the pavement in front of everybody. He came back and was so close to my face I could feel his spit on me.

“He started shouting, ‘Do you not know who I am?’ and bragging how much he earned.

“We tried to calm him down, but he called me a ‘f***ing Paki ****’ and also called me fat.

“He also called my manager a ‘balding white ****’. That’s two racist insults in one go.

“As I turned he punched me in the face. I was in a lot of pain and my face was all bruised and my teeth are very, very sore.

General Discussion / Paris WWII liberation made 'whites only'
« on: May 08, 2009, 11:20:09 AM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7984436.stm

Papers unearthed by the BBC reveal that British and American commanders ensured that the liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944 was seen as a "whites only" victory.

Many who fought Nazi Germany during World War II did so to defeat the vicious racism that left millions of Jews dead.

Yet the BBC's Document programme has seen evidence that black colonial soldiers - who made up around two-thirds of Free French forces - were deliberately removed from the unit that led the Allied advance into the French capital.

By the time France fell in June 1940, 17,000 of its black, mainly West African colonial troops, known as the Tirailleurs Senegalais, lay dead.

Many of them were simply shot where they stood soon after surrendering to German troops who often regarded them as sub-human savages.

Their chance for revenge came in August 1944 as Allied troops prepared to retake Paris. But despite their overwhelming numbers, they were not to get it.

Initially, it was meant to be for kids from in and around London, but this was an opportunity that had driven parents to some extraordinary lengths.

I asked Jagatheson Singaravelu how far he and his son, Yodishtra, had come.

"Melbourne", he replied. Perhaps he meant Melbourne in Chelmsford? No. They'd flown 21 hours from Australia just to be there!

"It was a long flight but it is worthwhile because chances like this are very hard to come by in a lifetime," Jagatheson told me.

Corinthians win Brazilian title, set fire to their captain

Brazilians demonstrate cavalier attitude to health and safety

Following a 1-1 draw with Santos on Sunday, Corinthians were delighted to win their thirty-first Sao Paolo State Championship.

To celebrate this hard-earned achievement, captain William took the trophy  - believed to have been modelled on a pimp cup - up on a crane so everyone in the stadium could get a good look. Unfortunately, the combination of streamers, ticker tape and open flames left the captain covered in a lot more fire than usual.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident. However, (Fat) Ronaldo - who may or may not have been deemed too heavy to put on the crane - spoke out about the piss-poor safety standards...

Brazilian stars love displaying their gentleman’s packages online

While most European players are content with filling their leisure time with an unhealthy amount of Xbox, the boys from Brazil seem to be wiling away the hours broadcasting their genitalia on the interweb.

Last week, we showed you how AC Milan’s Pato had “pulled an Ashley Young”, and our friends at Popbitch have turned our attention back to the Brazilian gossip blog on which we discovered the Duck’s indiscretion.

The extraordinarily NSFW Glossx suggests displaying one’s junk online is the number one pastime among Brazilian footballers. It’s not quite clear who they are showing their wangs to, or what kind of honey trap allowed them to be caught out like this, but they simply can’t get enough of showing us what their packing downstairs.

“His return is something to celebrate for the whole of Brazil, even for the Santistas [Corinthians' opponent in the final], who after the match, applauded him. It was a magical moment for Brazilian society as a whole.”

Mexico Announce Friendlies In Atlanta, San Diego

Mexico will play friendly games against Venezuela in Atlanta on June 24 and Guatemala in San Diego in June 28, Soccer United Marketing announced Thursday.

The match comprises last half of the national team's 2009 four-match tour of the US.

Mexico's match against Venezuela will be historic. El Tri will play Venezuela at the Georgia Dome and will be Mexico's first-ever game in Atlanta. The closest El Tri has been to playing in Atlanta was the Under-23 national team's participation in the 1996 Summer Olympics, although Mexico did not play any games in the state of Georgia.

Meanwhile, Mexico will return to San Diego for the third consecutive year. Mexico fell to Argentina at Qualcomm Stadium 4-1 in June but knocked off Venezuela there by a 3-1 score in February 2007.

The two games will be the first action for Javier Aguirre on American soil since he returned to El Tri earlier this month. Aguirre has played in San Diego with El Tri before, leading Mexico to a 4-0 friendly win over Albania in March 2002.

The games will also be sandwiched around some important competition. Aguirre will debut with Mexico on June 6 in El Salvador and will host Trinidad & Tobago for days later in World Cup qualifying. On July 5, Mexico will open their Gold Cup campaign against Nicaragua in Oakland.

Earlier this year, Mexico lost 1-0 to Sweden and beat Bolivia 5-1 in friendly matches on U.S. soil.

Central Michigan to pay $450K to settle sex claims

Central Michigan University has agreed to pay $450,200 after two women’s soccer players accused their coach of inappropriate sexual activity.

The deal signed Monday by Central Michigan is split between the women and includes $150,000 for their lawyer.

The women, a senior and a freshman, each had a sexual relationship with Tony DiTucci because of his “skilled manipulation and seduction,” lawyer Jennifer Salvatore said.

“They were young individuals who held the coach in high esteem,” she said in an interview. “He made them believe they were special and he was in love with them. Looking back on it, they wish they had handled it differently.”

The 35-year-old DiTucci was placed on leave in September, a day after the younger woman complained to the senior associate athletic director, according to the six-page settlement. He resigned on Oct. 15.

In a statement released by his lawyer, DiTucci declared his innocence and said the women “had made suggestive romantic advances … on more than one occasion.” He said he reported it to a supervisor.

DiTucci said he agreed to quit “because my innocence would forever be in doubt, no matter what the outcome of an investigation.”

The Rochester, N.Y., native said being a soccer coach “had been my life’s dream.”

His lawyer, J. David Kerr, said DiTucci did not want to speak to The Associated Press.

Central Michigan did not admit liability in the settlement. It said it was in the “best interest” of the players and the university to make a deal before a lawsuit was filed.

The freshman has left the school because of the experience.

Woman, 81, raped; cops hunt suspect

A manhunt has been launched for a 25-year-old Laventille man wanted in connection with the rape of an 81-year-old woman of the district.

Police say around 8 a.m. on Monday, the woman was at her Laventille home, when she saw a man ransacking her home. The woman confronted the man and he told her he was looking for money.

Told that there was none, the man proceeded to rape the woman and fled the house.

The woman was able to call the police and officers of the Besson Street Station arrived and rushed the woman to hospital, where she remains warded.

A detailed description of the suspect has been given to police and investigators say the suspect is affiliated with a criminal gang in the area and has a series of gun-related charges pending at various magistrates' courts.
