nice article on former England int'l Ricky Hill. used to watch him play back in the day.

http://www.rowdiessoccer.com/news/detail/uuid/fsfsinvq3m4q17fh14gubxbrd#.Uv08FGJdVPI

When Albert Johansson died homeless, penniless and abandoned by his family in West Yorkshire two decades ago, almost no one in Tampa Bay paid any heed.  But the obscurity of his death cannot negate the global impact of his life.  Indeed, Johansson’s trailblazing odyssey on the other side of the Atlantic half-a-century earlier triggered worldwide ripples of repercussions that still, to this day, reverberate through the soccer field at Downtown St. Petersburg’s Al Lang Stadium.

“I was just 5-years-old, watching a small black and white TV.  The year was 1964,” recalled Rowdies head coach Ricky Hill.  “I still remember it like it was yesterday.  I asked my older brother, ‘Who is that?  Who is that?’  I was so excited!  Albert Johansson was the first soccer player I had ever seen who looked… like me.”

Albert Johansson shattered England’s racial barrier and became the first person of African heritage to play in the FA Cup final.  Ricky Hill was – and of course, still is – of African heritage himself.

“Watching that soccer game forever changed my life,” Hill added.

It forever changed Tampa Bay’s sports history as well.

Coach Hill’s story began a generation earlier: “This has never been reported anywhere, but my grandparents were originally from India,” he revealed.  “My family name is actually ‘Sukie.’  But after immigrating to Jamaica, they worked the land that belonged to a gentleman named Mr. Hill.  Mr. Hill didn’t have any children of his own, so before he died he asked my grandfather to adopt his surname.  And that’s how our last name became ‘Hill.”

His father grew-up in Jamaica in a large, sprawling family with four brothers and five sisters.  “He was the only one who married a black Jamaican,” Coach Hill reminisced.  “All the others married Indians.  So even during family gatherings, my household always looked, well, a little different from the rest.”
In the aftermath of World War II, England was in ruins, its population decimated.  Third world immigrants flocked to the island nation to help it rebuild.  Among the many immigrants were Coach Hill’s mother and father....

and now they release him...

Atlanta, Ga. (December 9, 2013) – The Atlanta Silverbacks have decided not to exercise the contract extension on head coach Brian Haynes for the 2014 season, the club announced Monday.

“The decision not to exercise Brian’s contract extension was an incredibly difficult one,” said Silverbacks President and General Manager Andy Smith. “Brian deserves a tremendous amount of credit for leading the club to a NASL Spring Season Championship, but the organization felt that the team did not meet its expectations towards the end of the season.”

On the field, it was a tale of two seasons for the Silverbacks under Haynes. The club clinched a dramatic championship on the final night of the NASL Spring Season, finishing one point clear of the Carolina RailHawks and San Antonio Scorpions. The spring season title earned the team a place in NASL Soccer Bowl 2013, a game they would eventually drop to the New York Cosmos at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

The NASL Fall Season was an entirely different story for the Silverbacks. The team accumulated just 16 points over 14 games, posting a -8 goal differential, losing five of its last six games, and finishing in seventh place out of eight teams in the fall season standings.

“We ended the 2013 season on a downward trend and failed to generate any momentum going into the Soccer Bowl,” said Silverbacks Chairman Boris Jerkunica. “The organization didn’t feel good about the direction we were going in 2014, and had to make the tough decision of declining Brian’s contract option.”

Haynes posted an overall record of 10-7-9 (W-T-L) in his first full season in charge of the Silverbacks. He assumed the position in late 2012, taking over for then interim head coach Eric Wynalda, who is now the club’s technical director.

“On behalf of the entire Silverbacks organization, we wish Brian the best of luck moving forward,” Jerkunica said.

Wynalda will continue to oversee the club’s soccer operations as it prepares for the 2014 NASL season.

Football / Haynes named NASL Coach of the Year

Haynes named NASL Coach of the Year
By Neal Malone (atlantasilverbacks.com)

Atlanta Silverbacks coach Brian Haynes has been named North American Soccer League Coach of the Year.

In his first full season in charge, Haynes led the Silverbacks to the NASL Spring season title and with it the right to host NASL Soccer Bowl 2013 where they will take on the New York Cosmos on Saturday, November 9 at 7.30pm ET at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

The Silverbacks won on the final day of the spring campaign, beating Minnesota United 3-0 away from home on the Fourth of July to win the first half of the season by a single point with a record of 6 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses.

“I think all of us who have been associated with Brian Haynes for the course of the year are better people for it,” said Silverbacks Technical Director Eric Wynalda.  “Brian Haynes was just the right guy for the job and everything I knew and had been told about him, that seemingly made him a perfect fit, was true.”

As a player, Haynes earned twenty-one caps, scoring eight goals, with the Trinidad and Tobago national team between 1987 and 1996.

He was a standout for the Dallas Burn having attended Erskine College, playing on the men’s soccer team from 1986 to 1989 where he was a three time NAIA All American.  In the fall of 1989, Haynes signed with the Atlanta Attack of the American Indoor Soccer Association where he was the 1990 Rookie of the Year.  Haynes remained with the Attack until 1996.

He began his outdoor career with the Orlando Lions and also played for the Maryland Bays, Colorado Foxes, where he won the 1992 and 1993 APSL championships and the Seattle Sounders, where he won his third APSL and fourth championships.  The Dallas Burn selected Haynes in the 4th round (33rd overall) in the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft.

The NASL Coach of the Year was selected from a vote by media who cover the league on a regular basis.  In 2012, Ricky Hill of the Tampa Bay Rowdies won the inaugural award.

REPLAY HACK for NBC Website

This is via a hack where I changed the “PID” of the match on NBC’s website. I noticed that the Chelsea match had an ID of 105 last week Saturday so figured I’d +2 it for the Sunday midday match. NBC hasn’t announced its replay availability so I cannot guarantee if it will stream in its entirety. If it does then you can tape over your Betamax cassette.

Football / 2022 Qatar World Cup Slavery

Revealed: Qatar's World Cup 'slaves'

Dozens of Nepalese migrant labourers have died in Qatar in recent weeks and thousands more are enduring appalling labour abuses, a Guardian investigation has found, raising serious questions about Qatar's preparations to host the 2022 World Cup.

This summer, Nepalese workers died at a rate of almost one a day in Qatar, many of them young men who had sudden heart attacks. The investigation found evidence to suggest that thousands of Nepalese, who make up the single largest group of labourers in Qatar, face exploitation and abuses that amount to modern-day slavery, as defined by the International Labour Organisation, during a building binge paving the way for 2022.

According to documents obtained from the Nepalese embassy in Doha, at least 44 workers died between 4 June and 8 August. More than half died of heart attacks, heart failure or workplace accidents.

The investigation also reveals:

• Evidence of forced labour on a huge World Cup infrastructure project.

• Some Nepalese men have alleged that they have not been paid for months and have had their salaries retained to stop them running away.

• Some workers on other sites say employers routinely confiscate passports and refuse to issue ID cards, in effect reducing them to the status of illegal aliens.

• Some labourers say they have been denied access to free drinking water in the desert heat.

• About 30 Nepalese sought refuge at their embassy in Doha to escape the brutal conditions of their employment.

any buyers? punany on de cheap!

BOYNTON BEACH—A Trinidadian woman and her daughter have been arrested in a prostitution investigation in Florida. Boynton Beach police say the two were offering a “two-for-one special.”
Ramona Ramoutar, 42, and Daniella Sinanan, 24, were arrested on Tuesday on soliciting prostitution charges, according to police. According to a police report, the women placed an advertisement in the adult escort section of Backpage.com. The ad stated Jazmine and Angel were waiting in Boynton Beach to “rock your world” with “two-for-one specials.” The investigation was sparked after Boynton Beach Police said they received complaints from neighbours about possible illegal activity.
