Peltier: My greatest desire is to represent T&T at a World Cup.
By: Inshan Mohammed.

Former San Juan Jabloteh and Ma Pau SC midfielder Lester Peltier took the time to speak with the Soca Warriors Online (SWO) about his life as a footballer and his ambition for his country.

The former St Anthony's College player made his international debut for the Trinidad and Tobago national senior football team on January 26, 2008 against Puerto Rico coming on as a substitute in the 46th minute.

To date the talented midfielder has 13 international caps and 4 goals, which include a hattrick against Barbados to his name.

He also represented Trinidad and Tobago at the Under 17 and Under 20 levels respectively.

Peltier scored many goals at youth level also, one game in particular that stood out was against none other than Barbados in October 2006; when the Carenage born footballer scored a brace for T&T U-20 team and propelled them to a 4-0 victory in a youth qualifier at the Hasley Crawford Stadium.

Former Strike Squad defender Brian Williams was the head coach then, while some of the standout players on the team were, Khaleem Hyland, Ataullah Guerra, Keon Daniel, Matthew Bartholomew and Marvin James.

Today, Peltier still plays with some of his U-20 teammates, all of whom graduated to the senior level and are some of the finest stars on the Soca Warriors team, with Lester “Corn Curls” Peltier leading the way.

Below are a few questions with the Slovakian-based player.

1 - You have been on fire lately for both your club and country; it seems you just can't stop scoring. Since the days of Arnold Dwarika, Angus Eve and Russell Latapy we haven't had a midfielder who is capable of scoring goals on a consistent basis. Do you feel you are capable of filling that void?
LP: - Arnold Dwarika, Angus Eve and Russell Latapy are all indeed remarkable players and definitely set high standards for the next generation of football players in Trinidad and Tobago. My personal goal is to always perform to at my full potential as well as to keep growing in my profession and to push myself to the limit. As such, I definitely believe I can fill that void as my intention is to make a name for myself both locally and internationally and in the process, inspire other young players to do the same.

2 - In your humble opinion, where do you feel we went wrong in the Bermuda defeat?
LP: - Unfortunately, the chemistry among our team players began to diminish as we lost control to Bermuda, and although we had opportunities to score, they simply did not fall through. It just was not our best game.

3 - In my opinion, we must respect Guyana and at the same time do not be afraid, "proceed with caution" if so to speak, do you feel T&T is capable of beating them and qualifying for the next rounds?  If yes, what steps and measures you feel should be put in place to ensure that we are victorious. Bear in mind, Guyana is undefeated thus far in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
LP: - Guyana has proven to be the strongest team in the group as they have remained undefeated thus far. However, I do have faith in the talent we have in our team and with the right approach we definitely can conquer Guyana. I also have faith that our coach Otto Pfister will lead us to a victory with the execution of a good game plan.

To achieve a victory we must utilize a very aggressive game plan, acquire and maintain ball possession, our defense must be on point at all times, and each opportunity to score we must seize. Basically, we must be prepared for a tough match and bring our best game to the field. Confidence is also an absolute requirement. This game is an important one for us as we hope to not only go to the next round, but to also position ourselves as one of the strongest teams in the group.

4 - Let’s talk a little about your club and life in Slovakia. How is the overall experience at your new Club (FK AS Trenčín)? Do you like the atmosphere, the fans and the food? How do the people treat you, how do you cope with the climate and do you have a good relationship with your teammates and your coach?
LP: - Life in Slovakia has been a great experience for me thus far. The Club has embraced me and definitely consider me a key player on the team and treats me as such. Trencin where I reside in Slovakia is a very small, close knit city, the population is very much into football and the fans are loyal and friendly. I feel very much a part of the team as well as part of the community. With regards to my experience at the club, my professionalism has increased and the level of football we play here in Slovakia is very high, so I was able to improve all round as a player.

5 - Your younger brother (Johan) was rumored to have signed with your current team (AS Trenčín) I know personally that he had a trial spell at the Club. What happened?
LP: - I prefer if that question was directed at Johan himself.

6 - Having the physical attributes and the speed is always a big plus, do you feel however that mentally you are capable of playing a more composed and disciplined brand of football, especially under pressure.  I did not see the game against Bermuda which T&T lost, but judging from reports, you were contained and guilty of wasted opportunities on many occasions. Then you came back and scored a hattrick against table proppers Barbados.  Can you give us your view on how you feel you can be a more consistent performer?
LP: - I am a very passionate and competitive player and always strive to be consistent, however, when playing in a team, a successful match is mainly dependent on the chemistry among all players within that team. Also, there are times when a player may not have a good game, but generally I believe I am a consistent player.

Having lost the Bermuda game, the team committed to go harder and perform beyond the expected level. I personally made it my duty to ensure that we win this game and as such seized any and every opportunity to score.

7 - I saw two games with you at San Juan Jabloteh in the CONCACAF Champion Cup and despite Jabloteh's poor showing you impressed the hell out of me. I was convinced you would have moved on to a bigger club soon. You where rumored to be joining Belgium’s Club Brugge and had trial spells in the US and the UK (Houston Dynamo, Stabæk IF & Birmingham City), but you were unsuccessful.  Can you brief us on your experience and life on the road searching for a new club?
LP: - 2011 was all about penetrating the international football arena and my agent set up four trials for me to part take in, namely; Houston Dynamo, Stabæk IF, Birmingham City and lastly AS Trenčín. I can proudly say that each team did make me an offer, however I could not sign with Birmingham City because of issues in attaining a work permit and as my desire was to play in Europe, the offer from AS Trenčín seemed to be the most attractive.

My pursuit to attaining a contract was not new to me, and I adapt very easily to different cultures and different personalities, so my experience was more of a learning one more than anything.

8 - In 2007 you had trials with some top teams in Europe such as; Arsenal, Millwall, Cardiff City and Portsmouth and met some top players as well, you eventually signed with Portsmouth, but the deal fell through, how hard was it to lift yourself up and get on with life after such disappointment and what were some of the bright spots during your journey? Meeting up with Thierry Henry and Arsene Wenger was probably an eye opener.
LP: - I believe that everything happens for a reason, and though the outcome was disappointing, I used it as both a learning experience and motivation to work harder towards fulfilling my dream. As you can see my journey has not ended and I am on my way to achieving my goal.

9 - Who do you feel is responsible for helping you become such a good player today?
LP: - Football has always been a part of me as my father and elder brother both played football. Also, as a youngster I always admired Russell Latapy and pushed myself to be as good or better than him.

Throughout my journey as a professional footballer I have had some disappointments, however I used them to further encourage me to do better. All these are factors that shaped me as a professional player today.

10 - What is your main aim in life? What are you hoping to achieve in the near future?
LP: - My main aim in life is to reach my fullest potential in my football career and to retire playing for any of the dominating football teams in the European Football Champions League. Manchester United, Arsenal and Real Madrid are all favourites of mine.

I'd also love to retire between the ages 33-34, and to retire having titles or accolades such as 'most goals', 'MVP' and the like. Lastly, my greatest desire is to be given the opportunity to represent Trinidad and Tobago at World Cup.

11 - Who are your favorite players, both locally (past or present) and internationally?
LP: - Internationally, I admirer Cristiano Ronaldo.

12 - With the rate of your improvement, I expect a bigger club may come knocking someday.  If you had a choice, which club would you want to court you?
LP: - Personally I'd love to be granted the opportunity to play with either Arsenal or Real Madrid.

13 - Have you ever visited the Soca Warriors Online? If so, what are your thoughts and how do you feel we can better serve you as a visitor?
LP: - Yes I have visited Soca Warriors Online and I commend you on your efforts to promote our local and international football players. A great part of our success is having a great support system, and knowing your country is backing you win, lose or draw is a great feeling.

14 – Like every Trinibagonian living abroad, we all miss our home. What do you miss the most about T&T?
LP: - I definitely miss our local cuisine, the warm weather and my family and friends.

15 - You have played in T&T for most of your career, who in your opinion do you feel is capable of at least a trial on the T&T senior team and why?
LP: - No Answer.

16 - Do you have another brother apart from Johan playing in the T&T Pro League?
LP: - Yes, Ricardo Peltier. He plays with the Police FC.

17 - From your nickname, I assume you loved "Corn Curls" when you were a kid? Tell us how you got the name?
LP: - As a young boy I loved the 'Corn Curls' snack so much that the name just stuck with me from then till now.

Jones, Birchall, Edwards back in T&T squad to face Guyana in crucial WCQ.
By: Shaun fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Otto Pfister on Saturday announced a 20-man squad for this country’s back to back upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Guyana which includes four returning players who missed the two previous encounters due to injury or other reason.

The squad will train at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Monday and Tuesday before departing for Georgetown, Guyana on Wednesday morning.

Peltier, T&T’s hattrick scorer in the recent 4-0 shut out of Barbados, is seeing the upcoming clashes as possibly the most important of his international career thus far and certainly the most crucial for T&T at this stage.

“I think this is possibly the most important set of games for me in my international career so far,” Peltier told TTFF Media. “And we need to go out there and give it everything in the first game in Guyana. I think the entire team realizes that this is like a crunch period for us,” he added.

“The coach is a passionate, die hard guy when it comes to his work and he told us in the last game that we were not doing enough. He said we had to go out there and really put our best and score goals. We did that and we know we have to continue this if we are to bring home results and get the crowds filling the stadium again,” Peltier added.

In a Fifa.com interview earlier this week, Peltier went on to say :“Me and other young boys are looking to step it up and show the way. “We know everything there is to know about each other and we’re young and hungry. When you put this together with the experience of guys like Kenwyne [Jones] and Edwards, we have a serious team.”

Facing elimination with the wrong kind of result on Friday in Georgetown doesn’t dampen Peltier’s youthful spirit. “Sure, it’s a tough moment for us right now, but when we get through it, I can see this team going all the way back to the World Cup.

It’s been a long time since you’ve seen a Trinidad and Tobago team playing the game we’re playing – putting the ball on the ground and passing it around,” he added, an enthusiasm and conviction entering into his voice. “We’re bringing the style back to Trinidad and Tobago.”

T&T trio return from Pachuca trial.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

The Trinidad and Tobago Under 22 men’s team returned home from their satisfactory showing at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara on Saturday.

But three players stayed back in Mexico after being invited for a five-day trial with Mexican Primera Division club Pachuca FC, following their promising performances that caught the eyes of the club officials during the matches against Mexico, Ecuador and Uruguay.

Senior team midfielder Kevin Molino, winger Micah Lewis and midfielder Jayson Joseph are scheduled to return to Port of Spain on Thursday following their trial at the club.

Molino is currently attached to US club Orlando City while Lewis is at Caledonia AIA and Joseph is a member of W Connection.

“After the three games we got the invitation to go to Pachuca for a few days. I was particularly happy for the boys like Jayson and Micah to get the opportunity because I think this invitation showed that we attracted some attention during the tournament.

The effort was really good and I would have loved if more players had the opportunity to go to a club or two.

But I think once continue putting in the work and performing well then more opportunities will come for the boys,” Molino told TTFF Media. He added that Orlando was aware of his extra stay at Pachuca.

"Now the club will get back to us. We completed our training and the coaches had a look at us and they have said they will give us an update."

Over the past decade, Pachuca has been rated as the most successful club in Mexico, winning five national championships, four CONCACAF Champions’ Cups, a Superliga and one Copa Sudamericana.

The club has had several Mexican national players over the years including ex-striker Jared Borgetti as well as former Costa Rican stars Hernan Medford and Rolando Fonseca as well as striker Christian Dionisio who has eleven caps for Brazil and was part of their 1999 Copa America winning team.

Former Mexican national team interim head coach Efrain Flores is the present head coach of Pachuca

The former Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive player will now link up with the T&T Senior team for training ahead of the crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier against Guyana on November 11.

“This is very, very important game for us. I think we all know how much we need to go there and take care of business.

I don’t expect the game will be easy in any way but we must be ready to give it everything and bring home a result and then finish it off in the last game here in Trinidad,” the 21-year-old added.

T&T look for right result at home.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

“Our next game is against Barbados and for this game we go there and try to win the game.

Like I said in football there are three possibilities which is win, lose or draw. And as always we go to win. This is no different to any other game we play.”

Those were the words of head coach Otto Pfister on the eve of what has turned out to be a must win match for the “Soca Warriors” as they take on Barbados at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 5pm on Tuesday.

On the same evening, Pfister and company will be hoping Bermuda can continue their winning ways at home when they host Guyana who are top of the group on maximum nine points.

Regardless of the result there, T&T have it all in their hands as three wins in the remaining three games will see them through to next year’s semi-final round.

“It’s not over the top for us. It’s a massive game for us but every game in a World Cup qualifying campaign is just as important as the next one. I think we have the capabilities to advance in the tournament and once we play well then I see us getting the results.

Pressure is a normal occurrence but obviously we can’t put pressure on ourselves by thinking this could be the end of the road if we don’t get a result. Once we believe then our execution becomes easier out on the pitch,” John told TTFF Media.

T&T are still without five of its regular starters but will go into this game with the same 20 from Bermuda.

Barbados meantime will have in their squad, Wrexham striker Louis Moss.

Moss is eligible for Barbados through his mother and is the son of outgoing Wrexham FC owner Geoff Moss.

“I went out to Barbados for 13 days and it was a fantastic experience. I came on as a substitute against Guyana and made my first start when playing against Trinidad and Tobago in the first game.

Although the matches didn’t get us the results we wanted, it was a great opportunity and I am definitely glad I went,” Moss said.

Barbados also have Wigan Athletic defender Emmerson Boyce, who donned the captains armband for their 2-0 loss to Guyana, along with Marine FC striker Neil Harvey as their other overseas-based players in the provisional 20-man squad.

Looking back at their loss on Friday, Barbados head coach Colin Forde said: “I take full responsibility for the defeat. We played a very good game until we conceded the first goal.

We created a number of chances and it was a much-improved performance from the previous games. The only thing we did not do was score goals.

Now we have to play Trinidad and we will go there and try to win our first game. We still have three games to play and we will work towards winning all three.”

Meantime, T&T midfielder Carlos Edwards, a former Wrexham player himself, also now the father of twin girls, is hoping his teammates can get the job done.

“I’ll be following the game obviously. I’m not there but I believe in the boys and it’s a chance for them to really step up and deliver for the coach and the fans.

They must be willing to give their all and show what they are capable of. I’m not worried at this stage but obviously I want them to do well and I’m hoping for a good showing,” said Edwards who played in T&T’s 2-0 win over Barbados last month through goals by Keon Daniel and Darryl Roberts.

'Warriors' search for another win over Bermuda.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior footballers will aim to extend their three-match winning streak when they face off with a tricky Bermudan outfit at the National Sports Centre, Hamilton in a CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifier from 8pm (7pm T&T Time).

A near capacity crowd of 4,000 is expected to pack the venue and DirecTV North East Stars and former Sunderland forward Stern John will lead his teammates into battle knowing fully well that anything less than three points could put them under some pressure to top the current group with Guyana breathing down their necks on maximum six points as well.

Trinidadian Jamaal Shabazz is Guyana’s technical director and he will be following the match with keen interest as he prepares the Guyanese for their encounter with Barbados in Kingston. That match will finish two hours prior to the start of the clash in Hamilton.

T&T assistant coach Anton Corneal said the current T&T squad meant serious business and will look to finish off the Bermudans who are desperate for a victory to stay alive in the campaign.

The T&T squad includes Orlando City duo Devorn Jorsling and Kevin Molino, European-based trio Khaleem Hyland of Belgium giants Racing Genk, Lester Peltier and Radanfah Abu Bakr as well as Puerto Rico Islanders’ Osei Telesford, sturdy defender Seon Power and Philadelphia Union midfielder Keon Daniel among others.

“We know it’s an important game for both teams but it comes down to who wants it more and I believe this current squad, despite the fact that we are missing a few of our regular players, is hungry for success and they will give their all to get a win,” Corneal told TTFF Media.

“The surface is in excellent condition based on what we saw at our training session today (Thursday) and it means it is there for  good football to be played on. Bermuda will be thinking it’s an excellent chance to get a result at home against us but we will prove otherwise on the day.”

John meantime has scored twice before against Bermuda in World Cup qualifying action.  A 66th minute goal in the 2-0 win over the hosts in 2008 pushed T&T through to the semi-final stage after Bermuda upset T&T 2-1 in the first leg. And under Leo Beenhakker, T&T won a friendly at home 1-0 with John again the goalscorer in 2005.

John’s goal then came at a time when he was struggling for goals and another crucial goal followed up a week later in a 2-0 win over Panama in a World Cup qualifier.

John also netted in a previous 4-0 win over the same opponents a few days earlier with Dennis Lawrence and Kenwyne Jones also among the scorers. Former defender Marlon Rojas was also in the T&T line up that day. The former Police player is now a resident in Bermuda and stopped by to wish the team well on Thursday.

“I think we have a team that is capable of producing good football and getting results. I think once we play to plan avoid any silly mistakes as well as play hard for 90 minutes then we can win our game.

Obviously with me being one of the more experienced players on the team now I will try my best to lead by example and encourage the guys to do the right things out there,” John said.

Defender Julius James, now at John’s former club Columbus Crew, is focused on the task at hand.

“It’s the most important game for us because it’s the next game in front of us and we need three points.  I’d like to help my teammates as much as I can and this is another opportunity to do this now.

It’s a blessing being in this preliminary stage. We’ve all played together at some point in our careers and this camp in Bermuda before the game would have done us well,” James said.
The Bermuda FA meantime have been granted planning permission to build a US$1 million FIFA funded headquarters to be named in honour of ex-West Ham hero Clyde Best.

The Clyde Best Centre of Excellence will be a two storey building, located on the same site as BFA Field, complete with changing rooms, offices, a conference room and a storage area on the upper level. And with that news their General Secretary David Sabir said it would be ideal to celebrate it with a win over the “Soca Warriors”

“What a great result it would be for us to beat Trinidad in a World Cup qualifier. Our fans will be coming out to give us that support and we’ll be trying to make life hard for the Soca Warriors,” Sabir said.

A small group of Trinidadians living on the island including journalist Gary Moreno  also intend to make their presence felt, backed by a rhythm section, in support of T&T’s attempt to get another win on the Road to Brazil.

Trinidad and Tobago's National Under 17 Women's team will face St Kitts/Nevis in their third CFU World Cup qualifier at Warner Park from 6pm on Sunday. The team, under head coach Stephan De Four trained in St Kitts on Friday and had their final session today at the match venue.

De Four is confident his team can pull off another win after their convincing victories over Dominica last month.

"We've been focussing on finishing off our opponents once we are in control and so far we have demonstrated that ability quite well," De Four told TTFF Media.

"The girls are in a winning frame of mind and we are thinking of nothing else. This is a good sign for us and we will continue to work towards achieving that."

The return game is on Wednesday 5th October 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ato Boldon Stadium.  Entrance for the game at Couva $10.00.

Pfister picks squad to face Bermuda.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago’s squad for the upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifier versus Bermuda has been finalized by head coach Otto Pfister and includes eight players that will be playing under the German-born coach for the first time.

With skipper Kenwyne Jones and strike partner Darryl Roberts out with injury, Pfister has included Orlando City duo Devorn Jorsling and Kevin Molino, as well as Belgium-based defender Radanfah Abu Bakr, Kendall Jagdeosingh of Rochester Rhinos and Puerto Rico Islanders’ Osei Telesford who was in the line up when T&T defeated Bermuda 2-0 in their previous qualifier in Hamilton in 2008.

Stern John, who netted the decisive second goal is also in the current squad.

There are eleven overseas-based players in the squad with Slovakia-based winger Lester Peltier and Belgium-based midfielder Khaleem Hyland both included along with US-based trio Keon Daniel, Chris Birchall and Julius James as well as Clyde Leon who returned from Colombia last week.

Two of the others are W Connection defender Mekeil Williams, a former member of the National Under 20 team that played at the 2009 FIFA Under 20 World Cup in Egypt, and DirecTV North East Stars’ Kevaughn Connell, who had a short stint before under Francisco Maturana. W Connection goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams is also back in the fray.

Pfister will be without Carlos Edwards as well who has been excused due to a family emergency and Anthony Wolfe will miss the encounter due to injury sustained during the past week while in action for North East Stars

"It’s a good group. There are players here with good quality," Pfister told TTFF Media.

"We have two games again to play within a week and just like we did with first two matches, our aim will be to win both matches so that we can move to a maximum twelve points from our four matches. Okay, maybe we have a one or two players missing because of injury but this is football and we will find a way to go forward from here."

Orlando’s Jorsling is back in the team after not playing since the Digicel Caribbean Cup campaign in 2010. And he’s looking to make up for his missed time.

"As a striker you always want to score goals and help your team win. We all know Jonesy (Kenwyne Jones) is the number one striker but my focus is to come in here now and give the coach more options. I want to play my part, score goals and help bring home winning results," Jorsling said.

And Leon, who skippered the team for much of 2010, is optimistic despite what appears to be a somewhat new look team for these two upcoming games.

"I think we have the chance to show that our pool of players is large enough so that we can use other players when the regular starters are out.

I believe these guys have what it takes to bring home a win. We just need to really come together as a team. We’ve had a few good sessions so far and it’s just up to us to go there and put the pieces together now," Leon said.

Caribbean Airlines fly ‘Warriors’ directly to Bermuda.

Caribbean Airlines, who recently signed on as a partner with the TTFF to support the "Soca Warriors" for the 2014 World Cup campaign, followed through on their pledge, by accommodating the team’s request for an arranged trip to and from Bermuda.

Caribbean Airlines will fly the team directly to Bermuda on Sunday and then back to Port of Spain on Saturday which means the team will avoid longer hours, not having to stop off in the United States en route to Hamilton.

Caribbean Airlines Sales Executive Janelle Gangoo presented the airline tickets to team T&T team manager Peter Rampersad at its Nicholas Tower offices on Friday evening.

The Airline will continue to liaise with the team management to assist with whatever courtesies that may need to be extended to ensure the "Soca Warriors" have smooth travels for all their overseas assignments.

Peltier nets double in Trencin win.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and  Tobago winger Lester Peltier scored a first half double and set up another to guide AS Trencin to a 4-0 win over FC Tatran Pesov in the Slovak First League on Saturday.

Peltier took on two defenders before seeing his shot parried, allowing teammate Boris Godal to score on the rebound to put Trencin 1-0 ahead in the fourth minute.

Peltier then scored his team’s third goal in the 29th minute and followed up with another clinical finish three minutes before half time.

“I was really happy to be back among the goals today. The coach had the confidence to put me in the starting team and I repaid him by getting the two goals.

The win was an important one for us because it ensured that are our confidence is growing and we’re hoping to continue our winning ways for the remaining games,” Peltier said.

In other news, Carlos Edwards and Jason Scotland both saw action in Ipswich Town’s 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough in the English Championship on Saturday.

Scotland had an effort which came back off the woodwork. He was substituted in the 85th minute after receiving a knock but was not reported to have suffered any serious injury that could force him out of action.

English-based midfielder Andre Boucaud also played the full 90 in York City’s 3-0 win over Luton Town in the English Conference League. Collin Samuel was not in the Luton team for the encounter.

T&T national coach Otto Pfister will resume training with a squad of players on Monday at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

For the upcoming qualifiers against Barbados and Bermuda, T&T will be missing Kenwyne Jones (hamstring) and Darryl Roberts (fractured elbow) as well as Jlloyd Samuel who has again asked to be excused due to his unattached status at the moment.

'Warriors' off to Barbados on Sunday.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

A 20-man Trinidad and Tobago squad will depart for Bridgetown, Barbados on Sunday for Tuesday’s 2014 World Cup qualifiers against the “Bajan Rockets” at the National Stadium there which kicks off at 4pm.

T&T head coach has had to make one change to his team with Joe Public striker Andre Toussaint coming in for Stern John who is being rested after suffering a hamstring strain in Friday’s 1-0 win over Bermuda.

The Team trained on Saturday morning at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and will undergo another session at the same venue on Sunday morning prior to their trip to Bridgetown.

The two other players in the 20-man squad who were not among the eighteen for Friday’s encounter include Caledonia AIA midfielder Densill Theobald and defender Carlyle Mitchell.

T&T captain Kenwyne Jones believes the “Soca Warriors” will be in good shape going into Tuesday’s affair.

“It was a good start for us to win the game. In the last qualification we didn’t start like that and it put the team under some pressure. We have some things we have to work on.

This was our first competitive game and at the end of the day, a win is a win and hopefully we can build on this for the next game and then take it into the next round,” Jones told TTFF Media as he looked back at the opening victory.

“I was happy for the first win as the captain and to crown it off with a goal. The chemistry of the team has to develop and it will get better over a period of time. We have to use the next coming games as that measure and try to have the team gelling together.”

Only the top team from the group advances to the semi-final round and Guyana kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 win over Barbados in Georgetown on Friday night.

“We understand the circumstances of the group that we are in and we know that we have to come out on top. All we are thinking about is going there and winning each game.

You’re not always guaranteed winning results but we intend to go there and try to achieve that in every match.”

Now being one of the more experienced players in the squad, having appeared at the 2006 World Cup Finals and with Carlos Edwards Densill Theobald, John and Chris Birchall among those who have experienced similarly in national colours, Jones is fully aware of his role, particularly as skipper.

“Of course it is a responsibility. Playing at the highest level in club football and then coming back to lead your national team is a responsibility to bring your experience, skill and technical ability to the team.

A lot of players and the country will be looking forward to you to putting forward that foot and taking charge. It’s all about me going out there and doing what I know to do best,” Jones added.

Pfister enters camp with 25-man squad.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

National Team head coach Otto Pfister will enter a live-in training camp with twenty-five players this weekend in preparation for next Friday’s 2014 Second Round World Cup qualifier against Bermuda.

Pfister announced his eleven overseas-based pros earlier in the week and has now finalized his full squad which will then be cut to 18 players for the this country’s opening World Cup qualifier which kicks off at 4pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The home-based contingent includes Densill Theobald (Caledonia AIA), Stern John (DirecTV North East Stars), Marvin Phillip (Joe Public), Seon Power (Joe Public), Hayden Tinto (Joe Public), Carlyle Mitchell (Joe Public), Juma Clarence (Caledonia AIA), Andrei Pacheco (W Connection), Anthony Wolfe (North East Stars), Akeem Adams (T&TEC), Akini Adams (T&TEC), Andre Toussaint (Joe Public), Darryl Roberts (North East Stars), Hughtun Hector (W Connection).

The overseas quota includes captain and Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones along with Carlos Edwards (Ipswich Town), Khaleem Hyland (Racing Genk, Belgium), Chris Birchall (LA Galaxy), Keon Daniel (Philadelphia Union, USA), Julius James (Columbus Crew, USA), Jake Thomson (Kettering Town, England), Andre Boucaud (York City, England), goalkeeper Anthony Warner (Wellington Phoenix, New Zealand), Clyde Leon (Corporacion Deportiva Itagui, Colombia) and Lester Peltier (AS Trencin, Slovakia). These overseas players will begin arriving in Port of Spain on Saturday with Hyland scheduled as the first to touch down.

Defender Robert Primus, based in Kazakhstan, is receiving treatment for an injury in Moscow but will still travel to Port of Spain to be with the squad  before heading back to his club. He will not be considered for selection by Pfister for the upcoming qualifiers versus Bermuda and Barbados (September 6 in Bridgetown)

“This is the team including the overseas and the local players that we believe is the right group for the match. We have seen against India what the local boys can do and I have seen them in several training sessions over the past few months,” Pfister told TTFF Media.

“Now we will make a few training sessions with the overseas boys and prepare the final team for the matches. It is an important match as we know and I think the boys will be ready to fight for their country.

There is no easy game in world football today and we will prepare and give everything for the battle with Bermuda,” added Pfister who took the home-based players for a fitness session at Las Cuevas beach on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Bermuda will prepare with a 20-man squad  in Florida for the encounter. Head coach Devarr Boyles said his players were in high spirits and “ready to seize the moment”.

“We will be having a training camp in Florida where the conditions are very similar to the Caribbean,” he said.

“The training base will get the players in the mindset for competitive football. The facilities include both natural grass pitches as well as artificial surfaces, which is important, as we don’t know where we’re playing yet.

“It will be a good opportunity for us to consolidate the two groups: the overseas-based players and the local-based players. The players are buzzing right now and are ready to seize the moment, especially the older ones who more aware of the magnitude of this competition,”

And Bermuda’s Acting Minister of National Security Michael Weeks said he was comfortable with the security measures in place for the Bermuda team during the State of Emergency in T&T.

“This is an international event and the governing body for football in the region and internationally is responsible for security. However, in light of the recent issues in Trinidad & Tobago I asked the Bermuda Football Association to assure me of the arrangements made,” Weeks told the Bermuda press.

“I am satisfied that the security authorities in Trinidad & Tobago have matters in hand and that every aspect of safety and security for our players will be addressed.”

Tickets for Friday’s match go on sale on Saturday at all Kenny’s Sports Outlets and All Sport Promotions, Circular Rd, St James. Tickets are priced at $200 (covered) and $100 (uncovered). Children under 10 will be allowed free admission.

Football / Pfister pleased with the effort

Pfister pleased with the effort.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Otto Pfister expressed some amount of satisfaction over his team’s showing in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over India ahead of next month's 2014 World Cup qualifier against Bermuda. This was Pfister's first game in charge of the "Soca Warriors". It was also T&T's second consecutive win following their 1-0 victory over Digicel Caribbean Cup hosts Martinique last November.

“For me what it is not about the result but what I could see from these boys who had not played in maybe six months. The  boys didn’t  have official game in the legs for some time,” said Pfister. “I think for the first game it was okay. For my boys I was happy. As a new coach you don’t know exactly what the situation will be. There are some areas which we still have to work on but for this the first game I was pleased with some parts also."

He also commented on the performances of goalscorers Stern John and Darryl Roberts.

“I think he (Stern) was a good player and he is still a good player. One year he don’t’ play any football. Three  months ago I gave him special menu to lose kilo and in every training he works very hard. I think Stern John has two to three years at this level.  I think he made a very good performance in 75 minutes today.  He is very dangerous player in the box and I think he is a key player for Trinidad and Tobago for another two-three years. This  player (Roberts) is also like Stern. This is a very good player, He is always in movement. He is very strong with ball at the feet in penetration. I was very happy with him.”

Asked for his impressions on the pace of Sunday’s match, the ex-Ghana boss replied: “I think some times they had very good intensity but not all the times in the match you play very fast. In a football match you don’t always get the intensity that is high.”

Commenting on the preparations of the team ahead of the Bermuda encounter, Pfister added: “Today I know from the local boys who I can use and who I cannot use. Football is a very easy game. I will collect all the overseas players and we take two, three, four training sessions together and then we are ready for this World Cup game.

India head coach Armando Colaco also saw soem high points for his team inspite of the loss.

“I am happy with the way the boys played. We could have done better but Trinidad were better than us and they got the result. This is a learning process for us. We are a rebuilding team. We also had some chances too. These boys are very young and I thought they were impressive. These are the same boys that beat Qatar in Qatar. Football is India is on the rise and with the right exposure like today, they will get better. We enjoyed the experience here in Trinidad and Tobago and now we are looking forward to the game in Guyana," Colaco said.

Football / What the fans want...

What the fans want...
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF)

So it’s no secret that the Trinidad and Tobago public is craving for football action. Not since the 2-1 victory over the United States in the semi-final round at the Hasely Crawford Stadium has there been any real reason to celebrate a victory or feel proud as a fan of the Men’s Senior Team.

Certainly there is a lot at stake with the 2014 World Cup qualification right around the bend and Germany 2006 seems like a so long ago when you try to compare what since has caused that kind of euphoria that hit the country.

With Sunday’s friendly international against India being Otto Pfister’s first match in charge, we hear from a few of the fans who simply want to see something at least close to a dedicated showing from the “Warriors”.

“I am just anxious to see Otto Pfister’s philosophy and what he is bringing to the table. The score in this match to me is not important…what I want to see is formation, off the ball runs, collapsing and winning back the ball when not in possession, more intensity and faster game play, a sound attack..not hit and hope and some sort of idea when it comes to set pieces,” said avid fan Damian Joseph

“Once the structure and organization is there, the relevant players to fill the position will come later on.

I am setting my expectations low…both with our team and the opponents so that if they do perform it will be a pleasant surprise. The world cup games qualifiers are tough but with the foreign pros and some practice we can make the semi-final round. Each game we should improve.

“It takes time, we don't have to be the best just yet...we just have to do enough to keep advancing,”
Soca Warriors.net ‘s Inshan Mohammed admitted he still isn’t pleased with certain things but like most, he wants to see his team do well.

“I don't like the way things are running in the football office and I think things could get better with a little organization and better planning. However I can’t  help but support the T&T team,  the coach and the players.

“We are known for day dreaming, making error passes especially in our penalty area and taking forever to settle down. I want to see constructive intelligent football. I want to see men working hard on and off the ball. They  must contain their opponent and leave them with no space, close them down quickly, first to the ball, last to give up,” said Mohammed.

“I don’t like when T&T concede and they drop their heads. That must stop.  In fact it should motivate them to come back stronger.

“I want to see our players with fight and determination to the end, like if it was the last game of the year. Fitness and discipline is the key. A result against India is not important. However, it would definitely build the players confidence if they would to win and even better yet, do it handsomely.”

Another staunch supporter who has travelled around to back the “Warriors” is Nigel Myers. He sees Sunday’s match as an opportunity for the team to start rebuilding a relationship with the public.

“The decline in fortunes of our senior men's national team after our participation in the 2006 World Cup has been well documented. With that in mind, and another World Cup qualification campaign on the horizon, I view our upcoming international friendly against India as an opportunity for our players to reconnect with the footballing public.

“First and foremost I am looking forward see what Otto Pfister has been able to achieve with our players since taking up the mantle of head coach in May. What brand or type of football will we be playing? How is our fitness level? Are we playing with a sense of purpose?

Are we mentally focused? Will we be showing hunger and desire? And yes, as a fan, I ultimately want a comprehensive victory coupled with a good encouraging performance. With our first 2014 World Cup qualifier taking place less than two weeks after the India game, we need to treat this match very seriously,” Myers added.

And Anthony Valley hopes for nothing less than his fellow supporters.

“As a fan of football and my country, I will be following the game with mixed emotions. On one hand it’s depressing to see the current state of our football, but on the other hand I am cautiously optimistic that steps are being taken to bring about change.

“In saying that, I hope that the TTFF and other stakeholders of T&T football finally acknowledge that the fans also play a vital role in our team’s success; and steps will also be taken to ensure that we are no longer neglected.

“Regarding the actual match, I’m elated that the Warriors will be back in action after all these months. Although India is ranked lower than T&T I believe in this day and age no team should be underestimated.  I will particularly be looking forward to seeing if T&T’s record goal scorer, Stern John plays any part in the game as he is one goal away from taking his tally to 70,” Valley added.

For the sake of the fans, the “Warriors” will no doubt look to repay them for their good faith come Sunday and for the rest of the campaign. Did they get what they hoped for? We'll hear more from these fans later this week.

SWO exclusive with Seon Power.
By: Inshan Mohammed.

Today the Soca Warriors Online (SWO) took the opportunity to chat with Trinidad and Tobago international and North East Stars new signee defender Seon Power.

The right-wing back made his debut for T&T in 2007 and is anticipating a great 2011 season for both his club and country.

Below are a few questions the former St. Augustine Senior Comprehensive and Joe Public player was asked.

Q)Seon, congratulations on signing with DIRECTV North East Stars, but why did you choose them?
SP - Thanks, Flex. And thanks for the opportunity to speak directly to your forum. I hope some of these guys will go a little easier on me in the future (laughs). I played against North East last season and thought they were much better than their league finish. However, it was obvious that they had a problem holding on to leads and conceded too many goals. I think they were beating Defence Force 3-2 and would have been the first team to beat them, but then lost the match 4-3.

That result could have changed the season for both teams. They also lost a 2-1 lead to Joe Public and lost the game 3-2, and I'm sure that they took the lead in a few of the games that ended in draws. I looked at that and thought, if they could strengthen their defence, they may have won another 10 points last season. I also saw they were adding some quality players, and, of course, seeing Stern at the club was impressive. I've always respected and got along with Brent Sancho, and I was impressed by his ambitions for North East, so in the end, it wasn't a hard decision.

Q) How did you feel about Ma Pau, and now Joe Public withdrawing from the Pro League, and how do you think this will affect the League this season?
SP - On a personal level, it’s never good to see your old clubs in trouble, and you always look forward to playing against them, so I'm sorry I won't get that opportunity. On a professional level, it’s sad because you know that maybe 40 players and staff have lost their jobs. These are football people, and although many will be absorbed into the other 8 clubs, some will have to step down into the Super League, which means players in that league will be forced out.

But from the point of view of professional football and supporters, I actually think it is positive. The best players will be signed to other clubs, so the quality has been condensed down into 8 clubs, which means there is greater parity. There will be no easy matches this year. I think it’s only Jabloteh and QPFC not represented in the National team, and I expect that may change. I feel the ProLeague will be a more attractive option for players now. I don't believe the standard of football in the minor European leagues is much better, certainly not enough to travel half way around the world for.

Q) So, are you saying you wouldn't consider a move overseas?
SP - I've spoken to many players who have played overseas and got mixed responses. Although they all seem to believe it’s made them a better person for having experienced foreign cultures, it hasn't necessarily improved their career. At this time, my main ambition is to help Trinidad & Tobago reach Brazil and I feel I can better achieve that if I am here.

If I played, say, in Hungary, would I get better coaching than I receive at North East and with Mr Pfister? I don't believe so. The National training sessions are very good and it’s important to work with your coach on a regular basis. I think there is now a good relationship between the local players and Mr Pfister. We all have confidence in him, and although we're all aware that the overseas players will be called back, we're going to make sure they have to fight for their places. Ultimately, whether local or overseas, we all want T&T to reach Brazil. But of course I would have to consider any offers from overseas clubs, especially from, say, Barcelona!

Q) With all of the controversy surrounding the National Team and the lack of preparation, do you honestly feel that T&T can even make the Hex?
SP - Of course! It’s true we haven't been tested since Mr Pfister has been in charge, but remember, we have all been training regularly with the National Team, and playing Pro League and friendlies with our clubs. We are all on stream and I feel the current squad is familiar with each other and the confidence within the camp is high. Sunday is the start of our ‘Bound for Brazil’ campaign. It seems the money will be there and I know the players want to perform well for Mr Pfister and the supporters. We just hope that the fans will get behind us and give us that extra push.

Q) How do you rate Otto Pfister as a coach?
SP - Mr Pfister is a no nonsense guy and treats all players on the same level, whether local or overseas. It’s a great opportunity for the local players because everybody gets a fair chance. It’s obvious that the coach’s record isn't a fluke. He's always positive and says he hasn't come here to lose. He wants to win and he believes we will surprise people once we begin competitive matches. The training is good and there’s a great team spirit.

Q) You won 5 titles with Joe Public in 2009. What made that team so special?
SP - I guess it just all came together at the right time. We had a very good compact team and the understanding between players was good. It was a great season, but my only regret is that we did not fulfill our potential in CONCACAF.

Q) How do you expect North East to fare this season?
SP - I came here to win trophies, and I fully expect that to happen. You can feel when something is right, and we have all of the ingredients at North East to be the country's top club team. It’s hard to explain how good the pre season training is. You just feel faster, more agile, more professional. If you're fit, you have so much more confidence in yourself. In fact, the coach keeps telling us to be braver. He says we are still in a mindset that tells us not to make too many runs because we are worried we may not get back into position, but he reminds us we now have the levels of fitness to make those runs. You also don't pick up so many niggling injuries when you're at this level of fitness. He's kept us away from the ball until this week, so now we have 10 days of ball work to ready us for the first match. I must admit I am excited and keen to start competitive matches.

The squad is confident and there is strong competition for places. Its great playing alongside Charlie (Pollard). He has so much experience, and that gives you confidence. I'm seeing players like Kevaughan Connell and Stephen Cruickshank making crazy runs and Marc Leslie is great to have in front of you because he doesn't miss much in the air and can pass a ball. It will be interesting to see how defences will handle the combinations of Stern, Wolfey (Anthony Wolfe), Akiel (Guevera) and Drogba (Kaydion Gabriel).

Q) So, you think you will win the league?
SP - I think we have a great chance. The clubs ambitions are high and they've set us certain goals. Personally, my eye is on winning my third Toyota Classic in 3 years with 3 different clubs!

Q) Finally, Seon, North East Stars has a reputation now of high community activity off the field, how do you feel about having to commit so much of your time to community events?
SP - This was one of the reasons I came to the club. North East is trying to set standards. We are constantly reminded we have a duty to our sponsors, our supporters and our community. It’s a very strong thread that runs all the way through the club. Personally, as a parent, I'm sad to see the level of crime in T&T. Everyone should be playing their part to reduce this in any way they can. North East is trying to instill pride in the community and offer some kind of hope to young people. Community projects are important because they bring people together.

They also make you feel humble when you recognise how much more fortunate you and your family are compared to the daily struggles some people have to live with, whether that’s poverty, illness, or just not being loved and cared for. We have the ability to reach out a helping hand to these people and somehow, in some small way, bring a little warmth into their lives. And I have to admit, I find myself thanking God for my good fortune sometimes. Professional footballers are lucky because they get paid to do what they love. We should never forget that, and try to give back wherever we can.

Soca Warriors Online will like to thanks Seon Power for taking the time from his busy schedule to chat with us and we wish him all the best in for the 2011-2012 season and his career.

The sinking ship - a call to boycott T&T football.
By: Inshan Mohammed.

Calling all cars, calling all cars, there is a runaway federation on the rampage killing every aspect of T&T football - left and right!

On a serious note, I do stand by the statement made above, and believe that now would be the best time for a united Trinidad and Tobago to stand up and take action to end the dictatorial reign of the current Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF); a private organization that is destroying our beloved sport of football.  We the fans of T&T football are also pleading with the current TTFF administrators to please step down and resign your post immediately.

We cannot continue to see the state of our football deteriorate any longer. The fans must make their feelings known and here are some of the things that should be considered;

1. A public protest in front of the TTFF’s head office on Dundonald Street.
2. Boycott all T&T football games.
3. Plead for FIFA’s assistance.
4. Seek government assistance.
5. Create and sign a petition in protest of the TTFF’s incompetence.
6. Create and join anti-TTFF facebook groups.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) was formed on July 23rd, 1908. Current president Oliver Camps has served as the TTFF’s leader long before the name of the Association was officially changed on September 13, 1998 to The Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF).

In a recent article, Lasana Liburd highlighted one of the many questionable activities conducted by the TTFF saying; "And, although the body began calling itself the "TTFF" nearly two decades ago, the actual TTFF was only officially registered in April 2006 as a private limited company by its sole trader and the TTFF president—I mean, TTFA president—Oliver Camps."

As president, Mr. Oliver Camps may have had some small measure of success in the past, but over the last few years it has become quite apparent that he is lacking fresh ideas and vision to take T&T football forward.

Imagine, we may never see some of our top class players suit up for Trinidad and Tobago anytime soon like; Khaleem Hyland, Kenwyne Jones, Daneil Cyrus, Hughtun Hector, Jake Thomson, Julius James, Ataullah Guerra, Robert Primus, Kevin Molino, Keon Daniel and Lester Peltier.

Even the remainder of our older experienced players’ international careers could be short-lived. These players still have so much to offer like Carlos Edwards, Christopher Birchall, Collin Samuel, Jlloyd Samuel, Marvin Phillips, Clyde Leon, Densill Theobald, Devorn Jorsling, Cornell Glen, Andre Boucaud and Darryl Roberts.

In my experience following football around the globe I have never seen such a poorly managed federation. Imagine our senior team has not even had a preparatory match in over 8 months and now T&T’s chances of advancing into the second phase of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers seem slim; as we face Caribbean minnows Bermuda, Guyana and Barbados in the first qualifying round which begins on September 2nd, 2011.

I clearly remembered the TTFF Technical Advisor Keith Look Loy mentioning in a TV-6 interview that the TTFF got German coach Otto Pfister on a bargain. He went on to say that unofficially the experienced manager would be contracted for the amount of $50,000 USD a month plus other stipends, all of which were supposedly to be paid by the T&T government.

Now I am not a brain surgeon and I have nothing against Mr. Otto Pfister, but instead of paying a coach $50,000 a month, wouldn’t it have been more logical to appointed a local coach on, say, TT$30,000 per month and allocate the additional TT$270,000 to fund our World Cup qualifier preparation?

Given the history of financial mismanagement and the lack of transparency and accountability there is no justifiable reason for the government of T&T to fund any project or endeavor the TTFF embarks on, and that includes paying Otto Pfister’s salary. It’s like taking out a loan to buy a Ferrari, but you can't afford to pay the insurance or buy gas for the car. Yes, we have a Ferrari, but it’s no use to us if it will only be parked in the garage.

Politics at its best.

According to reports, the TTFF requested that the government provides $25 million dollars for its 2014 World Cup preparation, which by the way should have started a year ago. The government replied via Sport Minister Anil Roberts who acknowledged the request but rightfully demanded that the TTFF provide further details and show evidence of how the money will be spent. In other words, the TTFF has to thoroughly account for its spending and not make up ghost figures as they have allegedly done in the past. The TTFF supposedly couldn't get its books in order and have now decided to stand on its own two fragile legs.

Bear in mind Anil Roberts is a politician and his words and promises are usually empty. Don't be surprised if the TTFF do get the money they requested in the end. I believe that Anil Roberts’ recent release in the T&T dailies were just to fool the public. After all, Jack is the reason why he is Minister of Sports today.

Imagine, millions of tax payers’ dollars will vanish without any accountability and Roberts will be the first man to jump ship and defend his spending. I can't blame him though, T&T is probably the only country in the world where the people don't seem to care how their hard earned money is being spent.

Furthermore, it is mind boggling to think that the TTFF made $150 million dollars in profits just a little over 4-years ago, during the 2006 World Cup. Subsequently, we have had sub-par preparation for all tournaments we have participated in including the failed 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, and 2 respective Digicel Cup and Gold Cup tournaments. Furthermore during this time span, the TTFF refused to pay the bonuses owed to our 2006 World Cup heroes, in addition to short paying the 2010 Digicel Cup players. So where did the money go?

Given these obvious circumstances it seems strange that our honourable Prime Minister Ms. Kamla Persad-Bissessar who preached against corruption is not even asking questions about the TTFF. The TTFF in the meantime, claim to be so broke that it had to cancel T&T’s scheduled friendly match against Haiti this month. Mind you, Haiti, a country with a very poor economy was however up for the task. Now T&T is forced to go into its first round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers having no preparation whatsoever. We must also keep in mind that our first opponent in this round is Bermuda, a team that has beaten us at this level before.

One last push for $upport

There is however a game carded for the 21st of August against India, where it is rumoured that new team captain Kenwyne Jones and LA Galaxy’s Christopher Birchall will make an appearance. If anything this seems like a plot to sell tickets because the Galaxy are pushing to seal a play-off spot in the middle of the season and Kenwyne Jones is preparing to the start of the EPL which kicks off this Saturday. One would be surprised if both players play any part in the upcoming friendly.

Yes, I know we may not qualify for the 2014 WC with a local coach, but everyone, from the supporters, the TTFF and the government, must accept that we need to rebuild and focus on 2018 and beyond. We simply cannot compete with the likes of USA, Mexico, Costa Rica at this present time with a fete match mentality.

Now, my question to the TTFF is very simple, if you claim to be broke and cannot fulfill your obligation as career takers of our football, why not step down and give other willing and capable people a chance to carry the torch?

If I know them well they'll say, "well nobody wants to step up and challenge them for the position" or some other silly excuses that they already know the outcome off.

If the entire TTFF board members as well as the voting zonal members are disbanded, I can guarantee that someone will step up and accept the challenge. At least four eligible candidates come to mind who are more than willing to step in to help make a positive change.

Other than that, it would be a waste if one or two of the TTFF’s figure heads were replaced by capable individuals while the rest of the federation is still under the influence of former Special Advisor and financier Mr. Jack Warner.

Although the former FIFA vice-president is banned from football as a result of the recent bribery scandal that tarnished the reputation of Caribbean football, it is believed that he still pulls the strings in the TTFF behind the scenes.

Though, everyone around Jack seems to be falling as of lately and yet no one in the TTFF is even budging or stepping aside. Only recently, TTFF General Secretary Richard Groden were one of 16 officials from Caribbean associations who have been charged with breaching rules on ethics in the wake of the bribery scandal that saw Mohamed Bin Hammam banned for life.

Now, we as fans would like to know what the TTFF’s ultimate aim is as far as T&T football is concerned. One is left to assume that the TTFF is intent on;

1. Bleeding T&T football dry and showing the world without Jack Warner T&T football cannot progress.
2. Proving to the general public and the T&T courts that they are broke so the players who are currently pursuing their promised bonuses will not be given their share.
3. Staying in power with the hope that another big pay check will come by soon so its board members can solidify their job security.

Our football has reached such a decrepit state that no one in cooperate T&T seems to care about sponsoring any of our national football teams or TTFF ventures. To add insult to injury and laughter to pain, it seems many organizations in the sporting industry are crying broke, including the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League and the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago, which recently pulled the plug on subsidizing all sports in T&T.

So it seems, one financially strapped organization has to suffer while another less deserving of funding prospers. The Pro League is not only important for the progression of football in T&T, but it also employs many citizens, who may soon be forced to seek other means of employment while the TTFF officials and the Sport Minister sip their scotch and coconut water in Moka.

But that's another story, in the meantime the 2014 World Cup qualifers are around the corner. Let me repeat, World Cup qualifers start in September and we are grasping at straws for yet another World Cup campaign and, we go through this every single World Cup. It's like planting an apple seed hoping it bears sapodilla. I have not given up on T&T's chances to Brazil as half chance is better than none at all, however, all we are pleading for is a change for the better.

If I had to play a song in reference to the current state of T&T football management it would be none other than Gypsy's “Sinking Ship”.

This is an S.O.S. from the Trinidad.

S.O.S. S.O.S. Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! Help! Help!
"Captain, this ship is sinking
Captain, these seas are rough [oh yes]
We gas tank almost empty
No electricity, we oil pressure reading low
Shall we abandon ship?
Or shall we stay on it, and perish slow?
We don't know, we don't know
Captain you tell we what to do." [Woh woh]

TTFF launches 'Bound for Brazil' 2014 campaign.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Local fans will get to witness Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s Team in action against India in a friendly international at the Hasely Crawford Stadium at 5pm on Sunday August 21.

This was one of several announcements made by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation at a media conference held at the Jaffa Restaurant, Queen’s Park Oval on Friday morning.

Additionally Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Anil Roberts, during his address, pledged Government’s backing towards the National Team’s 2014 World Cup campaign, expressing satisfaction with some of the new measures being taken by the TTFF.

National Head coach Otto Pfister expressed his feelings strongly about his time with the T&T team thus far, stating his concerns over the level of negativity around T&T’s football currently but maintained his optimism of the team’s chances for Brazil 2014, adding that he has seen enough  from the players based at home and from overseas to suggest that the players are fully committed to the cause and capable of going the distance. The German-born coach also revealed that he has held talks with Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones and has entrusted in him the responsibility of team captain.

It was also disclosed that all three of T&T’s home matches in the second round will be played at the Hasely Crawford Stadium at 7pm.

There was a huge gathering of media correspondents including a representative from the "Warrior Nation" supporters group which was acknowledged by Minister of Sport Anil Roberts, officials from current and potential partners as well as TTFF Exco members and senior team staff officials.

TTFF President Oliver Camps gave the welcome address and thanked ex-special advisor Jack Warner for his contribution over the years.  Read Camps' speech

Top among the the revelations was the appointment of All Sport Promotions by the TTFF to handle all marketing and sponsorship responsibilities as well as oversee the management of international matches on the TTFF’s behalf in conjunction with the staff of the TTFF.

All Sport Promotions managing director Anthony Harford meanwhile provided details of some of the new measures being implemented by the TTFF to ensure proper
transparency and accountability.

Tickets for the friendly international versus India will go on sale shortly and will be priced at TT$200 for covered stands and TT$100 for uncovered. Details on ticket locations will be announced shortly.

Harford also announced that Carib Brewery Limited and TSTT will be coming on board for the 2014 campaign as well as Gatorade and other corporate bodies are engaged in discussions to partner for the qualifiers.

“Most of them are very keen to come back into the fold as sponsors but it is understandable that while they are keen, they are also extremely cautious.  We feel that things needs to change, The TTFF has therefore appointed to ensure that this change takes place, All Sport, and they have given us a clear mandate that things must be done differently,” Harford stated.

“So how  are we going to achieve this difference and convince all the stakeholders including the general public who pay their hard earned dollars to see football?

“The first step is that All Sport in conjunction with the Ministry of Sport and the TTFF, is appointing an Authorization Committee. This committee will contain a representative  from All Sport, a representative from the TTFF and there are three independent members.  One is  a high level official from the Central Bank of the Trinidad and Tobago whose name we cannot reveal yet as this has to ratified by his employers . The other is  Mr Ian De Souza, General Manager Corporate and Investment Banking, Republic Bank Trinidad and Tobago,” Harford revealed.

De Souza has over 34 years experience in the banking industry with extensive regional and International experience and is a certified management accountant as well as chairman Maple Leaf International School.

The other member of the committee is Mr Caryl Kellar, Advisor to the Minister of Sport. The TTFF will name its representative shortly and All Sport Promotions will chair this Authorization Committee.

Harford further added “We are also setting completely new accounts through Republic Bank, a TTFF marketing account , this account will be presided over and signed off on by members of the committee only on the presentation of invoices that are verified and are verifiable.

“We feel this is necessary and it is not that we feel there is any dishonesty in the hierarchy in the TTFF as it exists but we feel that there is enough of a cry among the public and certainly from the Ministry of sport that things have to be done differently and so we have agreed to act that way. We also have committed ourselves to issuing a statement publicly at the end of every game that Trinidad and Tobago plays from here on as to how much money was taken in at the gates, how much money came in through sponsorships, how the money was spent and if there is a positive or negative difference … we will advise the public via an insert in the daily newspapers and through press releases.

“At the end of every month, sponsors and Government will be given an update as to the state of affairs of this account, how the money is being spent, on whom and why. This is our commitment initially to the end of 2011. The reason we have not decided to go beyond 2011 is of course things could change… if the worse happens and  Trinidad and Tobago does not make it to the next round then the focus will be changed to a more developmental approach where the sponsorship requirements will be less but that is not to say that we will not continue to advise the public on what is happening.

“We feel this is the right approach, this is what the public needs to see and hear. We also feel the honourable Minister also will be more comfortable with this approach,” Harford stated.

“I know there is a lot of deep suspicion around what has been transpiring. Today’s newspaper headlines don’t  help but the fact is I think there is genuine concern and deep love for what is possible here in Trinidad and Tobago. We have considerable talent among our youth and we have to shape their lives positively and we have to do it together,” Harford ended.

Pfister ready to push T&T through
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

National Men’s Senior Team head coach Otto Pfister says that the gap between international teams is changing at a rapid rate and as such this country should not fear the possibilities of a difficult Road to Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, even if the “Soca Warriors” are ranked outside the top six nations in the CONCACAF going into the qualification bid.

The former Cameroon boss gave his reactions to T&T’s draw on Friday, making clear his intentions to give the respect due to the Caribbean opponents in the second round. T&T faces Bermuda on September 2 and will also face off with Barbados and Guyana with the top team advancing to the semi-final round. That third round will pit T&T against Mexico, Costa Rica and possibly El Salvador.

“Last time we flopped in November and we lost too much places in the FIFA rankings and now we have to face the first qualification. I think with a normal preparation we have a good chance. We have very good players outside and I can use five or six local players. Everybody has a chance and I think we have a good chance” Pfister told TTFF Media on Friday.

“At the same time we have to play six games, three home and three away and at the end of November, we will have a better team and we will have made progress from game to game. I am not afraid. I think we have a good chance to go to the World Cup.

You see in football … not all the favourite teams advances. You look at the Copa America, not Brazil, not Argentina. All the big teams were out of the competition. You have no small teams again. You have to play every game to your best. If you play against Mexico or Costa Rica, you always have a chance. It’s a question of preparation and self confidence,” Pfister said.

T&T will play a friendly international on August 21st at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and the TTFF will host a press conference on Wednesday to officially announce the fixture. Pfister meanwhile is firm on selecting his best possible players to assemble for the World Cup qualifiers beginning with the Bermuda affair.

“I think I have my best team. I have 14 or 14 overseas players and I think I can bring them in at the end of the day and six or seven local boys and we go with full concentration in this first game. It’s also a revenge for Trinidad because we lost to this team last time. But I don’t think too much about that because it’s a new competition, a new team and a new hope.”

He is not being distracted by any off the field matters, focusing solely on the preparations of the team.

“My focus is always on my technical way. Okay, everybody has problems left and right but I don’t think about it because If I go into it like this then I lose my concentration. I concentrate on the training exercise, the preparation and the ending and then I think we have a good chance to qualify,” Pfister ended.

One of Pfister’s Belgium-based options is midfielder Khaleem Hyland. The SV Zulte Waregem player is optimistic of T&T’s chances of going forward.

“It’s not a difficult draw for the second round but we cannot take any team for granted We saw what happened last time against Bermuda and they will be thinking they can make things hard for us again. We need to take charge of the group from very early and then set ourselves up nicely for the semi-final round.

That is when the matches will become a tighter. I think once we get the best team together for a few times well and get that chemistry going along then we definitely have to think that we can make it through to the World Cup,” Hyland told TTFF Media.

T&T to face Haiti in Port-au-Prince on Aug 10
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s Team will help mark the return of international football to the  Sylvio Cator National Stadium in Port-Au- Prince since last January’s devastating earthquake with a friendly international against Haiti’s Senior Team on August 10.

The game will also be Otto Pfister’s first since he took charge of the “Soca Warriors” earlier this year.

TTFF Technical Adviser Keith Look Loy said the game was confirmed on Friday and the T&T team will comprise of its best available players including those based overseas. Both teams will also meet in a return match at a date to be confirmed.

“We’ve agreed to play there on August 10th in Port-au-Prince. The venue has been used a shelter since then and we are looking forward with great anticipation to that day. Despite the tragedy of the 2010 earthquake, they remain one of Caribbean football's powers. At the same time, playing the Haitian national selection in Haiti, and on such a meaningful occasion, allows us to demonstrate our solidarity with the Haitian people in a tangible manner, and via a medium that they will readily appreciate - football. This will undoubtedly be a tough match and a good measure of where we are immediately prior to the beginning of World Cup 2014 qualification” Look Loy told TTFF Media.

It had been mentioned earlier that talks had been ongoing with Central American teams but they all proved to be unavailable on the FIFA date.

“We have no problems playing against Haiti. They have proven to be formidable opponents and have started their World Cup preparations and will take this match seriously in their own backyard. It will be a massive occasion for the players and the people of Haiti on that day,” Look Loy added.

T&T last played Haiti on August 10, 2008 at the same stadium, losing the friendly 1-0.

Haiti is currently coached by Brazilian Edson Tavarez and among their recent call ups for a 1-0 loss to El Salvador in February included Jean-Francois Lescinel of English club Swindon Town as well as Kenold Versailles of US club Rochester Rhinos, same as T&T duo Kendall Jagdeosingh and  Yohance Marshall, James Marcellin of Portland Timbers, Mechack Jerome of Orlando City (team of Kevin Molino and Devorn Jorsling) and goalkeeper Steward Ceus of MLS club Colorado Rapids. Some of their other international include Sporting Braga midfielder Joseph Peterson and defender Judelin Aveska of Argentine club Independiente . Haiti defeated Qatar 1-0 in a friendly in Doha last November.

The T&T senior team has been in training twice per week at the Ato Boldon Stadium and Pfister will select his squad for the encounter later this month.

United Soccer Leagues announced the USL PRO Team of the Week for Week 13 of the 2011 season today, honoring Harrisburg City Islanders midfielder Andrew Welker as Player of the Week after he scored in both of the club’s games in Los Angeles last weekend, helping the City Islanders take four of six points and move into second place in the USL PRO National Division.

With his side reduced to 10 men on Friday night, Welker gave Harrisburg the lead in the 53rd minute as it earned a 1-1 draw with the Los Angeles Blues. Welker then had what proved to be the game-winning goal in Sunday’s encounter, firing home after a good piece of work from fellow Team of the Week honoree Sainey Touray.

The Charlotte Eagles continued their strong run of form in league play and saw both goalkeeper Eric Reed and forward Sallieu Bundu named to the Team of the Week after their strong performances in a 2-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Reed saved a penalty on his way to a sixth shutout of the season on Friday night, while Bundu added another pair of goals as he moved into a tie for fifth in the league in goals.

The Riverhounds’ Shintaro Harada was also honored as he found the back of the net in his side’s 2-0 win against Charleston on Saturday night. The victory ended the Riverhounds’ seven-game winless streak and moved them back into contention for the final playoff place in the National Division.

Orlando City’s Devorn Jorsling and Rob Valentino were selected after the Lions became the first side this season to take six points from a trip to Antigua. Jorsling scored both goals for the Lions in their 2-1 victory on Sunday evening, while Valentino was strong all weekend at the center of defense as Orlando held Antigua’s leading scorer Stefan Smith goalless.

Pfister's first game could be vs Central American opposition.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago’s men senior team is likely to be in action on August 10, the next FIFA international date against CONCACAF opposition.

Otto Pfister’s team had been in talks over a friendly match against European opposition Armenia but that has not materialized and the TTFF is now awaiting feedback from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

An approach was also made to Canada but the one time Gold Cup champions through head coach Stephen Hart have since said they are  unavailable while Jamaica is a possible opponent but outside of the FIFA window.

“We have some oppositions from CONCACAF that we have approached and we are currently awaiting feedback from them regarding the next FIFA date on August 10,” Technical adviser Keith Look Loy told TTFF Media.

Pfister has met with some of T&T’s European-based players over the past couple weeks including Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones. So far, Khaleem Hyland, Lester Peltier, Darryl Roberts, Carlos Edwards, Collin Samuel and Jason Scotland have been part of the training sessions at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Striker Stern John has also been part of Pfister’s sessions as he continues to work on his fitness and is currently in talks leading towards a new deal ahead of the coming season.

English-based trio Andre Boucaud, Jake Thomson and Jlloyd Samuel were excused from turning up for the training session this month due to personal reasons while Samuel is likely to complete a new transfer.

Through an English-based agent, talks have also been held with Justin Hoyte and Anthony Warner who already has one cap for T&T.

Edwards who has been part of Pfister’s sessions recently, has responded well to the German’s way so far.

“It’s been good since I’ve been back with the boys. Obviously it was the first time for me working under the new head coach but I’ve done this before and it’s been a smooth process.

He has his philosophy and way of doing things the way he sees it and it seems to me that he definitely has good intentions and wants to see us back among the top  three or four teams in CONCACAF,” Edwards told TTFF Media.

“He hasn’t allowed any distractions to affect his focus or the sessions. He’s been to the Gold Cup so he knows what to expect from our other opponents. I personally have enjoyed the sessions and so far things are looking good.

We are in a bit of a tight position because we didn’t make it to the Gold Cup and we haven’t played a game in six months or so but obviously we’re looking forward to the next match possibly in August and we’ll get kicking again from there heading into the qualifiers for 2014,” Edwards added.

Look Loy: TTFF needs to now stand on it's own legs.
By: Inshan Mohammed.

Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) Technical Adviser Mr. Keith Look Loy today gave SWO a sneak-peak of what should be expected of Trinidad and Tobago football in the near future.

He also outlined that the TTFF will have to become more innovative, self staining and ambitious in its approach if they are to move forward. Look Loy also touched on other important issues surrounding T&T football including the status of the current U-23 team preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games, among other things.

When asked if Mr. Jack Warner has resign from the TTFF and CFU as well- after his resignation from FIFA and, if we will see some new blood within the TTFF administration Look Loy replied, "Flex, I cannot answer these questions now as I do not know if Jack Warner has exited Trinidad and Tobago football, and if so, how the Executive Committee of the TTFF intends to move the Federation forward."

Since the TTFF has been relying heavily on Jack Warner in the past and assuming that he is out of T&T football Mr. Look Loy was asked if we will see him and longstanding president Oliver Camps take up a more direct role as TTFF heads to try and implement a proper marketing strategy and address other important issues to help push T&T up from here on.

Look Loy said: "I have my own thoughts, but I am not a member of the Executive Committee. The assumption that Oliver Camps and I will "run things" is incorrect. As I have always attempted to make clear, I merely have responsibility for technical matters."

"Whatever the implications of Jack Warner's resignation from FIFA, the government of Trinidad and Tobago has given a public commitment to finance the Brazil 2014 qualifying campaign and they are expected to stand by this commitment."

"That said, indeed, the TTFF has relied heavily on Jack Warner in the past. This is clearly no longer possible and that is an excellent development in my view. It is not a crisis. It is an opportunity."

"The federation DOES have existing income streams from local partners and FIFA, but now it is necessary to fully develop a TTFF marketing and partnership strategy, to secure meaningful sponsorship and merchandising income, and to independently stand on one’s own (financial) legs. To date, this has not really been a priority."

I would also say “Yes”, the TTFF needs “new blood” particularly in the regional associations and at central level. One of our main problems is the lack of participation of clubs in the life and management of their regional associations, which frankly, need to seriously improve their operations."

"Moreover, it is from these bodies that TTFF General Council and Executive Committee representatives arise. At the central level, we need to modernize and professionalize the federation’s operations – to create a technical department, and dedicated departments for national teams, competitions, youth, women’s and grassroots football, etc. - and this by definition implies recruitment of new talent. Of course, it also demands increased funding."

Look Loy further stated that: "The men's senior team is training (twice weekly, to cater for club preseason training) and I am working hard to secure a Central American opponent for 10 August. One European team - Armenia - had offered to play on that date, and then withdrew in favour of an opponent closer to home."

“I am now awaiting the response of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Jamaica is willing to play on a date other than 10 August as they are already committed to another match.”

“Since any other date is not a "FIFA date", an alternative date to 10 August does not suit us as we would not have our full team, including Europe-based and MLS-based players, available.”

“Meantime, three English-born players - Jake Thompson, Jlloyd Samuel, Andre Boucaud, were supposed to join the team in training this week but the three asked to be excused due to contract negotiations or personal issues.”

“We hope to bring them in prior to 10 August for the coach to have a firsthand look at them. We are also speaking with Justin Hoyte and Tony Warner. There are a few other players that have asked not be mentioned until and unless they agree to participate in our programme."

After being asked about what has happened to the TTFF official website Look Loy added , "The TTFF's official website is functional.  It may be accessed at: http://www.ttffonline.com/home/

He then closed off the SWO interview on a different note, giving us an update on the Under 23 men’s national team.

"The men's Under 23 team is currently in training (three times weekly) ahead of CFU qualifying for the London 2012 Olympic Games, which will take place in Dominica on 19, 21 and 23 July."

"Our opponents are Curacao, Grenada and the host country. One team will qualify for the CONCACAF final tournament now scheduled for March 2012 in the USA."

"The coach has stated his intention to include Kevin Molino and Khaleem Hyland in his Dominica squad. Meantime, the request for funding for a pre-tournament trip to Panama from 4 to 10 July has been forwarded to the Federation."

Jabloteh part ways with Adrian Romain.
By: Inshan Mohammed.

Trinidad and Tobago professional outfit AC San Juan Jabloteh have parted ways with assistant coach and team administrator Adrian Romain as they go in search of new replacements for the upcoming season.

What is interesting though, Romain himself did not even know he was fired.  When asked by the SWO if the rumor of him leaving was true, Romain replied, "I didn't leave, however, I heard the rumors myself which I have to conclude at this time are true."

"I am no longer a part of the Jabloteh team for sure. My exit however was not based on my part, but one that I have now accepted. I have moved on knowing that I gave only my best to the club."

His time with Jabloteh allowed him garner a special respect for former coach Terry Fenwick. When asked who were some of the best coaches he worked under or admired? Romain replied, "Ron La Forest, Jamal Shabazz, Dion La Foucade and Terry Fenwick whom, I have grown to highly admire and greatly respect."

As far as his career goes, his opinion on the way the League is run and whether he felt the League would survive another 10 years, the former Trinity College East student highlighted, "At this time a lot of great things are happening with respect to my career as a coach. I am also embarking on projects that will help me to grow, not only as a coach but also as a person."

"I am a strong believer and supporter of the TT Pro League. With this being said, I also feel that a lot of improvements can be made especially at the community level; one being through improving community fields which will give rise to greater crowd support."

Romain, who has experience in coaching at Ma Pau S.C, Caledonia AIA and El Dorado Secondary Comprehensive further stated that it was important for a Tobago team to stay in the league and that Joel Russell and Sheldon Bateau are two of the best youth players at the Club, but ended by saying that he felt Jabloteh will not win any silverware this season unless things are changed.

"It is of great importance to have a team from Tobago active in TnT's highest league, this is a must, there are too many great Tobago footballers who get swept under the rug or fall astray."

"As for Jabloteh winning any silverware this season, I do not see any silverware or anything furthermore coming Jabloteh's way, and believe me this is not a case of sour grapes."

"In order to create winners in any sphere of life the seeds must be cultivated and the roots (must be) strong, therefore if the management is not strong and does not share the winning mentality the team will suffer, and losses are a natural consequence of weak management."

"I wish the club the best in the future and I look forward to seeing two players in Joel Russell and Sheldon Bateau who I really adore and have worked with in the past, move on to bigger and better things one day,” ended Romain.
