Football / Wha goin on fellas?!?!?
« on: June 08, 2005, 09:35:36 AM »
Been out the mix again as usual for the last month, now I fully back in it, landed in TT yesterday.

I saw a tape of the Panama game, cant really say much that hasnt been said so far here.

Main points:

1) Birchall - what a discovery. I believe he is easily the single most important and effective player we have produced in the last 10 years.
The man have set of flams and skills like the rest of the players, but his style is totally different to all other men. This difference i feel is what is giving the team a different dimension i its play, he is extremely solid in the middle, good backtracker, and the man run tirelessly for the whole game, battle every single ball. He run off the ball good and play simple effective passing football.
He is like an angus eve, only 10 years younger, more energy, smarter for the game, and could take set plays 100 times better.
He must mantain this standard for us to play effectively.

2) Yorke play like a man possessed, i never see him run so. And he was quality as usual.

3) Marvin Andrews is an even bigger warrior than i keep thinking he is, and he real improving with passing. Rangers real help him

4) Lawrence score a real nice goal, and he actually play an excellent game. I still fraid him and he giraffe qualities in the back against speedy skilfull central americans, BUT....

5) From point 4 above, the new coach is a boss. You could see the difference his approach made, and the system used make the 2 tallmen in the back less vulnerable that BSC had them. Result = excellent game by the 2 towers.

6) Beenhaker has the team playing much better as a unit, fluid movements, support and most importantly, THEY FIGHTING EVERY SINGLE THING!

7) As I keep saying, once stern fit, he should walk onto any national team. He might be lazy and throw away plenty, BUT HE CAN SCORE, and that is the most important. If allyub see that goal he score, they replay it about 5 times and I myself about 20 times, and up to now I dont know how he slide and angle that ball the way he did into the goal. I have not seen a more clinical finish in my life by anyone in any level of football PERIOD! The man is a boss.

Onto Mehico - !
As usual, we expecting a beating and 90 mins of total domination by Mex, but after seeing that display on Sat, the team fighting, playing as a unit and most importantly, have a vibe going. Yuh could see it in their play in the second half of the Panama game.
I feel this will be one of our best chances to compete with Mexico in mexico, adding the low altitude, smaller stadium, less smog,Guadlajara traditionally having less passionate supporters, and that we playing with some confidence and some quality now.
But beating them will still be real real real hard.
Shaka aint there, and Ince, nobody it seems knows his situation.
I hope Jack play the game of his life, he has to if we are not to be embarassed and routed.
I have faith in meh warriors, at worse, we cannot lose too big cause we alreday have a bad GD.
Say some prayers fellas, we in for 90 mins of nailbiting football tonite. Lets hope we have some luck and spring something!

I see we have plenty new posters on board too, nice nice.
Hope they stick around for the long term too, not only when we in a final round qualifying and actually winnning games too....

Anyone making a lime to take in the game?
Me and some partners thinking about trotters or something.

That is the difference with we modern team and them old team, we had wingbacks of class.
Dexter Lee was his back up and he woulda walk into the team right now.
Them men coulda run all day up and down the wing and FLIKKING CROSS or make plays to we front men and link up with the midfield.

Look at these quote in particular:

Soccerphile: What did you know of Korea and Korean football before you came here?

Ian Porterfield: The Far East was an area that I hadn't been to too much. My aim was to come to Korea for the World Cup with Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinidad and Tobago National Team did so well for such a small country of 1.3 million. We went through all the qualifying games, then went through the 1st round, 2nd round, all the individual games until the last, last bit. We were just a little bit short and missed the boat. It'd always been a dream that I'd had and I'd missed out going to the World Cup by one point with Zambia and I just missed out again with Trinidad and Tobago to come to Korea and I haven't been disappointed.

Well we were severely beaten and thrown out to last place in the final 6 and we played well our last 2 games a 1-0 win at Honduras and a 0-0 draw at home to the US thanks to THE BEST COACH we could EVER HAVE - Rene Simoes!! (Of course we could not afford to pay him sadly). He failed in the Hex. Don't know what he means above, but yes in the semi-final stage we were great!

Soccerphile: But it's a big gamble to leave school at 16 to concentrate on football in Korea.
Ian Porterfield: That's right but why? Sixty years ago, Korea was as underdeveloped as most African countries. Argue? It's true. Now, it's one of the most forward-looking economies in the world. Education is very important but when you analyze the way football goes in this part of the world-it doesn't work.
Kids are studying all hours of the day here - morning, noon and night. Other countries have education as well as it can be done. Football and education can go together. The KFA should look at, a perfect example. Now France is developing more players than England, Spain etc. The national team won the World Cup and the Euro Championships with a population not much bigger than Korea. It can be done and I tried to encourage this when I was involved in African football. In fact before I left Trinidad and Tobago, I wanted to lay a structure to develop football straight through and it would have worked.

A structure hmmm?? Of course Rene Simoes had a structure (Germany 2006 plan) but lets not talk about our failure to keep him.

Soccerphile: Would you be interested in the Korean National job?
Ian Porterfield: I love my job at Busan, I want to make a go of this club. I loved being a National coach and had great satisfaction from taking Zambia to 18th in the world from sixty something. I took Trinidad and Tobago from sixty something to 24th/25th. I am very proud of my achievements. The future - who knows? What will be, will be. I am ambitious, my life is football, my love is football. I am committed to Busan I'cons but tomorrow's another day.

There may be a few more Korean tomorrows as there have been suggestions of a contract extension. For enthusiasm alone, the manager of Busan deserves some success and who knows? He could achieve his dream at managing in the World Cup with Korea.

Well he is in fact true, on the day we played the USA in the US in June 2001, we were ranked I think 24th in the world by FIFA. Losing 2-0 by 2 dotish give away goals, 1 by Marvin Andrews and I cyah remember the other.

I am back!! Hyperhot J aka Jason.

Hope all is well!

I aint want we look better, I want we score goals and learn to fight to the death to defend it.

We may very well be testing a new system, new coaching motivation, heck even understanding the man etc etc, but the fact is our national team should not be losing to a club team.

We in a bad state.

If them is our supposed best locals, then we have the wrong players on the local national team.
And no excuse about them is a bunch of fellas playing against a TEAM, these fellas on the local team play a million game together before and know each other, and THEY SUPPOSE TO BE BETTER TECHNICALLY THAN ALL 11 PLAYERS FOR STARS.

Them fellas also playing first time for a new big name coach, they should be dying to run rings around Stars to impress.

But in all fairness, they mighta be trying a totally new system, and is the coach first competitive game, so I'll live with that FOR NOW.
new coach or not, these are our best local players, and they are all veterans. This a world cup year to boot, so motivation all around is high.
We should not be losing 2-0 to a local club team.

I cant see the US losing to LA, even if they playing a fully local team.
Neither Mexico to Necaxa.
Lets hope for a better showing next game.

Fellas, as bad as this sounds, we in trouble.
Losing 2-0 to NE Stars...We continuing to set new lows! ??? ???

the thought of Durance Williams in goal vs Mexico could drive man to heart attack.

I sure Public was giving him more money.
I doubt it have man in T&T pro leage playing for less than 2000 a month ( about the equivalent of that MLS salary in terms on TT$ and cost of living etc etc)
I woulda do the same at the time.

But u coulda also think that maybe if he had confidence in himself, he woulda suffer for the first year, play good, and get nice improvements afterwards.
He musta had all kinda thing going through his head with West Ham, agents, friends etc etc.

This is the best thing for him to get release now.

still deadly to play in if u not used to it, thats over a half mile high.
But still not bad compared to the 7400 feet of the capital.
The smog is also another critical factor that we wont have to deal with so much.
And the small fact that we playing in a 45,000 seat stadium and not a 115,000 seat one.

Anyhow u look at it, is still most likely a cutass for we, but we hadda go in and battle!

If i not mistake, when we play them las time last year we also didnt play in Azteca as well, a much smaller ground.
Same licks we get.
If we could go in there and get a point, I bet we will go on and qualify for germany

Rangers 2-1 Hearts: FT Report

PA

Rangers moved back to the top of the Bank of Scotland Premier League thanks to a nerve-jangling 2-1 win over Hearts at Ibrox.

The victory, courtesy of goals from Thomas Buffel and Marvin Andrews, put them a point ahead of Celtic and left their supporters hoping for a further twist in an unexpectedly enthralling finish to the season when the Hoops entertain Aberdeen on Sunday.

But those fans had certainly not enjoyed a fraught final 10 minutes that saw Andrews put through his own goal and Hearts launch attack after attack in search of a campaign-killing equaliser.

There had been no shortage of pre-match talking points either, with Hearts head coach John Robertson top of the agenda following Friday night's board meeting that shed little light on whether his departure is imminent.

It was also the first time the two sides had met since Rangers had won 2-1 at Tynecastle in March thanks to a last-minute penalty.

That had been awarded on the advice of linesman Andy Davis and prompted a witch hunt against the official which was resurrected this week when Celtic criticised his appointment to the Tennent's Scottish Cup final.

Rangers manager Alex McLeish swapped the fit-again Gregory Vignal for Maurice Ross at left-back in the only change from the side that had won 3-1 at Aberdeen last week to cut Celtic's lead at the top to two points.

Robertson, once the team bus had arrived at Ibrox having been delayed by traffic until 45 minutes before kick-off, opted for a starting line-up that included Saulius Mikoliunas, the Lithuanian who had been sent off for barging into Davis in the chaos that followed the penalty award.

The home side dominated the first half and took the lead within eight minutes through Buffel.

Nacho Novo deserved the plaudits, however, as he had created the goal with a superb solo run on receiving a pass from Dado Prso that saw him motor past first Steven Pressley and then Robbie Neilson.

Novo also beat the advancing goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, with a lofted effort, but saw Andy Webster block on the line. The ball looped up perfectly for the Belgian, however, and he nodded home from close range.

Gordon was able to make a smart one-handed stop to deny Prso after Novo had set him up and Buffel, who had been intent on reaching the rebound first, claimed in vain for a penalty as Lee Wallace challenged.

Within seconds Buffel's latest appeal went unheeded by referee Charlie Richmond, who awarded a goal-kick after Andrews had fluffed a seemingly unmissable chance.

Hearts had been caught out from a Vignal corner that saw Prso divert the ball perfectly for the big defender, who continues to defy the medics who insist on a knee operation.

Andrews produced a defender's finish by scuffing the ball wide, but made amends two minutes before the break when he diverted a Buffel shot from outside the box, which was heading wide, high past Gordon, after Pressley had only half-cleared a Novo header at the back post.

Hearts had offered little except for two nervous moments for the home support from free-kicks. Paul Hartley took them both and on each occasion fired a low drive past the wall.

Ronald Waterreus did well to scramble the first round his left-hand post, but was able to make a more comfortable stop from the second.

Hearts, who had seen Wallace booked in the 31st minute for upending Novo, swapped Lee Miller for Dennis Wyness up front at the break.

Rangers were content for the status quo to continue, however, and Hearts lacked the guile to put them under any serious pressure.

The anonymous Peter Lovenkrands was replaced by Shota Arveladze on the hour mark at a time when Hartley was receiving treatment after being clattered by Novo.

Buffel sent a a drive crashing down off the crossbar after Arveladze had teed him up and, after Vignal was booked for a foul, Hearts sent Mark Burchill on in place of Joe Hamill.

Hearts were reduced to desperate measures now and the home fans howled when Mikoliunas went down in the box in search of a penalty.

Referee Richmond allowed play to continue, but then booked the Lithuanian for gesturing to the crowd. He was replaced by Stephen Simmons when Rangers swapped Prso for Steven Thompson with 15 minutes remaining.

Vignal made a crucial intervention in the 76th minute when Hartley looked odds on to convert his side's best chance of the afternoon. The Scotland international pulled the trigger from eight yards out, but saw the Frenchman divert it away at the last moment.

However, Hearts were gifted a lifeline in the 82nd minute when Andrews comically sent a Stewart free-kick past his own goalkeeper with no challenger near him.

Thompson then proceeded to ping a drive off the bar at the other end to make sure it was an unnecessarily nervous ending to the match for the home side.

Simmons fired narrowly over as Hearts pressed for an equaliser that would have been undeserved, but underlined the nervous nature of a season that is destined to go right to the wire for the second time in three years.

Mayhem!.....Three cops, guard slain
Police say they will not retreat
Observer Reporter
Thursday, May 05, 2005

Deputy Superintendent Cornwall 'Bigga' Ford inspects the body of his colleague, Inspector Lascelles Walsh, who was shot dead by gunmen in downtown Kingston early yesterday morning. Walsh, who was on his way to work, was cut down when he stopped his motorcycle at a traffic light. (Photo: Bryan Cummings)

THE police pledged yesterday not to retreat in their fight against criminals despite the bloody attacks between Tuesday night and early Wednesday that left three cops and a security guard dead and the Cross Roads, Kingston police station potchmarked from a brazen assault by gunmen.

At the same time, the government called for consensus in its effort to "conquer this evil in our midst".

Slain gunmen Christopher Coke, alias 'Chris Royal and 'Royal Blend', 23, and his partner in crime, identified only as 'Jello', lay at the intersections of West Kings House Road and Waterloo Road in Kingston, after they were killed by the police just minutes after they murdered Corporal Hewitt Chandler of the Protective Services Division, at the same intersection Tuesday night.

"Now is the time to put aside all partisan considerations or selfish concerns and unite in the fight against crime," said Prime Minister P J Patterson in a statement.

The JLP, apparently stung by rumours that it could benefit from instability, sought to distance itself from the attacks and urged the police to do their all to bring the perpetrators to justice.

"We call on anyone with information about these events which might be useful to the police . to come forward and use the available confidential means of communicating with the police . to assist them in reaching the right conclusions about the events," said the party's security spokesman, Derrick Smith.

The marks left on the building housing the Cross Roads Police Station and this car parked in front tell the story of the vicious attack by gunmen early yesterday. Here a police photographer and an investigator record the evidence. The gunmen, who were travelling in a grey Honda motor car licensed 5788 EK, killed District Constable Canute Brown during the attack.

Police say that the clear targetting of cops was partly in reprisal for their success in shutting down criminal gangs, but Lucius Thomas, the police commissioner, vowed:

"There will be no retreat and no surrender. Our strategies are going to make Jamaica safe."

At the same time, police groups, who branded the killings as an "assault against the state and a challenge to its stability," urged legislators to pass legislation to make it easier to fight racketeering.

This motor car, which the police believe was used to transport gunmen around Kingston on Tuesday night, was set on fire yesterday morning after its occupants got out of the vehicle. It was not clear yesterday if the car was stolen. (Photos: Bryan Cummings)
"In the face of these attacks and the obvious criminal network and dirty money financing these criminals, we are calling upon parliamentarians to immediately legislate a Racketeering Influence and Corrupt Organisation Act and to expedite the Proceeds of Crime Act in order to effectively cut off and eliminate the financial bases of these groups," the statement said. It was issued by the Police Officers Association, the Police Federation, the Island Special Constabulary Association, the ISCF Officers Association and the United District Constables Association.

It was, however, not only security officials who died in the carnage. Two gunmen who killed one of the cops in the initial attack the at intersection of Waterloo and West Kings House Roads in St Andrew were themselves cut down by other policemen, who apparently just happened on the scene.

One of the dead triggermen was identified as Christopher Coke, also called "Chris Royal" and "Royal Blend", whom police say is a son of late Tivoli Gardens enforcer, the notorious Lester Lloyd Coke, who was also better known as "Jim Brown".

That would make Coke, 23, also as Chris Royal and Royal Blend, a half brother of well-known Tivoli Gardens figure, with whom he shares the same Christian name. The older brother is also called Duddus.

While Thomas and his boss, the security minister, Peter Phillips, spotlighted the successes against organised crime for the marking of the police, the police chief suggested, too, that the overnight strikes against his men stemmed from the police killing last month of Tivoli Gardens "community leader", Donovan Griffiths, also called "Zion Train".

Thomas told reporters that in the aftermath of Griffith's death, in an alleged gunfight with cops, intelligence reports had indicated that the underworld wanted revenge.

"It was said the security forces would pay," he said.
The first of the assaults took place at around 9:30 Tuesday night.

Corporal Hewitt Chandler, who is a member of the police's Protective Services Division was sitting in a marked police car, waiting for the traffic lights to change at West Kings House and Waterloo Roads.

He did not make it through the lights. A black motorcycle rode up beside him with two men aboard.

The men pulled guns on Chandler and opened fire.
According to the police, two other policemen who were coincidentally on the same road in an unmarked car challenged the gunmen and when the shooting ended, Coke and the other motorcyclist, identified so far as "Jello", had been cut down.

The police say that a Glock pistol, bearing serial number FNP560, as well as a Browning 9mm pistol with serial number erased, was recovered at the scene. The police say they also took 105 rounds of ammunition and extra magazines from the bodies.

Several hours later, at about 5:30 am, came the attack on the Cross Roads station and the death of the second cop, District Constable Canute Brown outside the station.

A car sped by the station and gunmen opened fire from the vehicle, hitting Brown, who later died in hospital.

Several M16 assault rifle and 9mm cartridges were found outside the building.

Half-an-hour later, the third cop - Inspector Lascelles Wash, who worked at the Motorised Traffic Division - was cut down. Walsh, a popular voice providing traffic reports on Radio Jamaica, was riding his police traffic cop motorcycle along Port Royal Street in downtown Kingston. Gunmen drove up to him and opened fire, killing the 24-year police veteran on the spot.

"Walsh was one of the most loved officers in the force. This is a terrible sight," said Deputy Superintendent Cornwall 'Bigga" Ford of the Police Flying Squad as he and other investigators combed the crime scene for evidence.

As Ford and his colleagues collected clues, smoke billowed a few blocks away on Luke Lane - a grey Honda motorcar was on fire: apparently the same one from which the gunmen had fired at the Cross Roads' station.

"They are destroying the evidence," one cop said, shaking his head.

But this was not the end of the mayhem.

In between the Cross Roads shooting and Walsh's murder, Richard Adams, who worked for the private security company, Marksman Limited, was shot dead on Marcus Garvey Drive.

Adams, the police say, was travelling in a white Suzuki Jimny jeep along East Avenue near its intersection with Marcus Garvey Drive. Gunmen opened fire on the vehicle.

Adams ran from the vehicle in an attempt to escape, but was chased about 50 yards along Marcus Drive before he was caught and shot in front of the Wallenford Coffee Company. His body, clad in the black uniform of the Marksman company, lay near a drain. He had been shot more than a dozen times. The vehicle had several bullet holes.

"This is war," said a police man who was at the scene.
Not much earlier, a policeman stationed at the Hunts Bay station, further along Marcus Drive, had been shot in the leg when armed men pulled alongside his patrol car in North Avenue, Greenwich Town and opened fire. The policeman, whose name was withheld, was hospitalised.

Killed by gunmen:

. Inspector Lascelles Walsh of the Motorised Traffic Division;

. Corporal Hewitt Chandler of the Protective Services Division;

. District Constable Canute Brown of the Cross Roads Police Station.

. Richard Adams, a supervisor of Marksman Security Limited.

if you were to write a similar article on T&T over the last 18 months, we would appear woefully inferior to them.

Make no doubt about it, they are on a higher momentum than us rite now.
The good thing is that we just get a new coach and playing at home.

This gives us a lill injection, a lill boost for that game. Plus although we didnt win vs CR last game, we didnt lose either, so we also have a lill momentum going.

I personally feel we could take 6 pts off them, but it will need some luck.
I dunno nah, that next game vs them will be the game of the year for us.
Panama and TT both unpredictable.
We hadda win that one, cause we heading up Azteca a couple days later.
If we could work on the confidence of our team, I feel we could handle them in 1 month's time.

but u right, he is one of the true trinis at heart for us, and we love him more than most.

I feel now is not the best time for him though, m personal opinion.

If I was him, I woulda stay out the TT pic for a lill while again.
We already in a deep hole
People still remember 2001 June
Plus he now starting his career as a coach.
A good player doesnt necessarily make a good coach.
He needs to get some coaching skills, and that comes with experience.

Coaching wise, he will be the most underdeveloped in the HEX and the most nieve.

Wait a few more years, maybe next campaign, and get a good offer, control the team for long, build them properly and make a run.
By coming in now as a stop gap for this campaign, he could ruin his name and rep for the future, esp if we dont get 6 pts from the next 3 games, and it all wont be his fault.
I also concerned about the back and forth between Falkirk and TT.
At this level, yuh hadda be in 100% or not.

is the most shit he talk in a while, like he really ketch a vaps.
I could safely say we see KND grow up on this board, before, it was shit, 3 times a day, 7 days a week, had nuff men rolling, now he kinda get boring and mature.

But for all its worth, lets give the yute a chance if he wants to, if he good enough, we happy, if not, thanks for the interest, but time to move on.
No need to get on so hype about the yute, too, cause he is a virtual unknown, but u never know with these types of players.
I hope he could bring something, but i doubt very much.

"Yorke has not reached double figures in his past five seasons"

Dwight hit 13 goals in 2002-2003 season for Blackburn partner
(http://www.gjmedia.co.uk/t&t2-3.htm)

In terms of achievement, there is no one remotely close to what he has achieved from the English speaking Caribbean (Barnes included).
Gullit and that whole holland posse who it seems like came from suriname, could rival him, as they also won championships in italy and all over europe as well.

Its only because Dwight has conquered so much and set such high goals, that when he scores less than 10 goals in an EPL season, we seet it as a failure.
It is his own high achievements that has seen us critisise him now, as he is a mere mortal.
People like Dwight Yorke are born in Trinidad and Tobago once a generation.
If Latas was a  lill bigger and coulda pelt a tackle or two, he woulda be at Dwight Level on the international stage as well too.
But for T&T, and in terms of gifted ability, he is perhaps the best we have ever produced (latas).
Dwight may have been a harder worker and more sacrifice and maybe more ambition (also a lill luck too sometime).

it was always Arima RC vs my school, Tunapuna RC in the East Finals.
Them 2 school was a notch above everything in the East, most of the times arima would win out totally though,
The orphanage with them big huge 'primary school' fellas used to to give we a lill fight, and a couple of the EC school too, but even back then, the rivalry i always remember was to play Arima RC in the final.
Looks like it aint it really change so much up to now.

Its funny to see the ractions here after Jamaica's victory vs Guatemala. But thats understandable. Funny also that while people here are pointing to the fact that wJa used UK born players to assist in qualifying, T&T tried hard  to naturalize a white Brazilian to help in your push towards qualification. Respect to T&T though, you are in the HEX, we arent.  But it feels good knowing that our local squad could be beating up on at least 2 of the other Hex teams. This is my little moment in the sun, se see with me guys  :D

Looking forward to the Gold Cup (Thats our world cup!).

U still aint put forward your counter-response (as usual when faced with raw facts) to Sam....
If TT full WCQ team play JA best team now, i will be surprised if there is a clear winner between the 2, and even if there is, one goal as usual will separate the teams.
In saying this, it was a very good result for Ja, they doing well with this mainly local team and new coach. The key is to mix them with established good men, like Bibi etc etc.
If u was to put that same local team in a WCQ round, more than likely they will choke (even bigger than your so called big team that choked last year).
That Guatemalan team you all play was a literal 3rd rated team.
Outside Guatemala, TT usually beats Guatemala easily (4-2 in the 2000 Gold Cup and 3-0 in POS in Feb 2001 come to mind).
Heck we even beat them in Guatemala in a WCQ before....1989
