General Discussion / Crime in the Caribbean
« on: February 19, 2008, 10:57:12 AM »
In light of what has occured in the past few weeks with reference to Trinidad and Guyana, this article presents a perception of what outsiders may think.  Please take note this was printed 4/2/08 - before the shootings in Independent Square, police shooting in south and Guyana's trama.

The Caribbean's crime woes

The Economist says the Caribbean has become a world leader in violent crime
An unflattering portrait of crime in the Caribbean is painted by the Economist magazine in its latest edition.
The Economist’s article pulled no punches.
It says the Caribbean, better known for its blue skies, cricket and rum punch, was the world leader in violent crime.

It quoted a joint United Nations-World Bank study last year, as saying the region had a murder rate of 30 per 100,000 inhabitants - four times the North American figure and 15 times the West and Central European average.

Jamaica, according to the Economist, is the world's most murderous country. But it notes that the rest of the Caribbean was catching up fast, irrespective of size or wealth.

Prosperous Bahamas, it points out, was far more dangerous than impoverished Guyana. In Trinidad and Tobago, the murder rate has quadrupled over the past decade, despite a fall in unemployment to five percent last year.

The Economist paints an unflattering portrait of crime in the Caribbean

The respected international publication says the illegal drugs trade was largely to blame but it added out that since the 1990s, cocaine shipments in the Caribbean have stabilised while murder rates have soared - pointing to a complex picture.

Tourism has largely escaped the violence but last May's UN-world bank report cited by the magazine, had warned that crime had the potential to curb the region's economic growth.

The report also acknowledged that murder statistics in small countries were often problematic because a relatively small number of incidents can result in high rates.

But what is clear is that homicides are a growing problem in the Caribbean.

Thanks Gladman (Sunderland vs Wigan)

Keane Blasts 'Cheapskate' Trinidad FA

Roy Keane says Sunderland had to pay for a first class upgrade for Trinidad striker Kenwyne Jones to ensure he got enough sleep to be able to face Wigan this weekend

Sunderland take on Wigan today in a vital bottom-of-the-table clash as both sides seek to distance themselves from the drop zone.

The Black Cats are hoping that Trinidad striker Kenwyne Jones will be able to take to the pitch and put in a good display, despite him having featured for his country in a friendly against Guadeloupe on Wednesday and only returning to Wearside on Friday.

It was a long and arduous trip for the striker, but Sunderland boss Roy Keane says it would have been even worse if they'd left it upto the Trinidad FA

But after forking out the extra cash for first class, the Black Cats boss expects to see the striker repay his club in goals.

“The Trinidad FA make Kenwyne’s travel arrangements but we made sure he came back first class and had a bed to sleep on," said Keane.  "If we left it to them I think he’d be on a ferry.  Him and Stern John would probably be paddling home.

Sunshine

"To be honest, after the way he played we should have kept him in economy.  But we had to make sure he was sorted as he needs to perform in a big match for us.  I’m hoping it will have refreshed him," added the Irishman of Jones' trip back to the West Indies.

"He’ll have got a bit of sun on his back.  Dwight Yorke used to go back to the Caribbean and return like a new man.  Sometimes it does you good.”

Wigan Clash

As for today's game against Wigan, Keane has warned his players he will accept no repeat performance of their embarrasing Stadium of Light defeat to the Latics in the FA Cup.  "When you lose 3-0 at home I expect to be harsh.  But the last few weeks have been good," he added on a more positive note.

"My life doesn’t revolve around football.  I’m in a good space.  You have to enjoy it while it lasts as it could all change tomorrow.  People talk about fight but that’s life and I enjoy it.  I could be sat on the beach enjoying my retirement but doing nothing scares me.”

It is imperative that the internal politics that surrounds TnT football are dealt with as quickly and effectively as possible so the boys who will wear the Red, White and Black can concentrate on football ONLY!!!  And to my other islanders (whoever you are), you can have as many warm-up matches, actual game hype is completely different and those teams can play at a higher level.  That is why we play the game.

Half time: 1-0; Its a decent game thus far.  John playing well and the commentators could kiss...(finsih the sentence).  Houston looked flat, they miss Brian Chiiiiiing. I would expect them to play harder in the 2nd half; however, it would not change the result!!!

Other Sports / NFL - Michael Vick and Dogfighting
« on: July 19, 2007, 06:38:42 AM »
Michael Vick was indicted on approximately 5 counts in relation to dog fighting!!!  He has been plastered in every news network...including The Daily Show!!  Why would you even put yourself in that situation?  Whether he is guilty or innocent, he has already been ripped in the media.  One comment compared him to Kobe in terms of losing endorsements and missing team games beacuse of court hearings.  The difference, to me, is that Kobe was the poster child of the NBA, real squeezie clean image contrary to Mr. Vick.  And you know what, at the beginning of last season, it was his brother, Marcus who was the bad boy coming out of Virgina Tech and ppl thought he would not see a NFL field - my how the tides have turn.

De voting was close with becks and Tomlinson - 50% to 48% with 81,000 plus votes.  I thought Becks would have pulled it off but was not suprise at the result.  I give ESPN (or ES-PIN) props for at least trying to educate the masses about various sports ( I didn't know who de hell was Shawn White, with the exception of an excess AMEX user).  I am looking forward to the match between Kobe and Ronaldinho, might be another close one.

"FIFA have to be open and assist the Fraud Dept (if not completely, at least publicly appear to) FIFA cannot stand in the way of a Govt investigating its employees. They will have to co-operate or risk going to trial for perverting justice. They do not wish to be investigated. They cannot support corruption." (FPATT)

Correct me if I am wrong (and I know allyuh fellas will), didn't FIFA made a rule recently about keeping items such as this internal and would punsih those who do not fall in line?  What if FIFA does not comply with the Fraud Dept.?  What will it mean for the players and the team?

..."As most would know by now, FIFA is a law unto itself, and any form of legal action against it or its members or interference by the governments of sovereign states will result in automatic suspension. This is a very big stick that has essentially kept everyone in line, for the sheer global popularity of football means that politicians are more likely to risk their country being expelled by the United Nations than being debarred by FIFA."

"Unless these individuals can be persuaded to relinquish their positions or behind-the-scenes influence, those screaming out that "Jack must go!" better be prepared to face the music if a footballing revolution does come to pass" (Mohammed, 07).

This puts things in perspective - if we need to clean out house, we have to be inconvenience but for how long?

Since this is a thread on A.John, check this article, which is along the same lines as Shaun Fuentes' piece:

John caught in T&T pay dispute
By Kyle McCarthy / MLSnet.com Staff

Avery John has been unable to play for Trinidad & Tobago in the Gold Cup. (Martin Morales/MLS/WireImage.com)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- As the final seconds of Tuesday night's 1-1 draw between Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala ticked away, one can't help but wonder what New England Revolution defender Avery John was thinking.

John probably would have been on the Gillette Stadium field he sees most weekends as part of the Revs, playing for his country instead of watching from the stands.

But a conflict between the World Cup players and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation concerning World Cup bonuses has left John and his fellow World Cup teammates on the sidelines watching a domestic-based team gain only one point and fall out of the tournament at the group stages.

"It's not a good feeling," John said. "It's been almost a year since the World Cup. To see things they way they are, it's not good. It's very difficult to watch."

The two sides have bickered over the amount of bonuses since the conclusion of the World Cup. After the federation promised the players a sum of money as a reward for qualification, it reneged on the deal and offered the players lower terms.

John said that it is important for his group to hold its ground in order to bring the federation up to international standards as T&T attempts to qualify for its second World Cup in 2010.

"For me and the rest of the guys, it's bad," John said. "We're trying to get things sorted out for now and for the future of Trinidad and Tobago football."

But those qualification efforts have taken a massive hit with the Gold Cup performance. A Trinidad side expected to challenge for the title has fallen out at the first hurdle.

"It has had a definite impact," United States manager Bob Bradley said. "That would hurt any team. It's played a definite role in our group."

The lack of success in the tournament has tempered the enthusiasm from the success of the country's first World Cup campaign last summer, according to John.

"You have all the momentum and you want to build upon it," John said. "Everything has crashed right now. It's really disastrous. It can't get any worse."

With the regulars out of contention, the TTFF called up players from its domestic league. U.S. fans might recognize a pair of former MLS players: Keyeno Thomas (San Jose) and Gary Glasgow (Kansas City).

John said that in the long run, the dispute may help the national team program by developing players that can contribute on that level.

"It gives the other guys a chance to gain exposure," John said. "We don't have a large group to select from. It's a learning experience for them. Hopefully, the guys that are there can see what it takes. Then they can go home and say that we're way below where we need to be."

Improvement will require continued focus on the domestic league in Trinidad. The league currently operates on a semi-professional basis, with players struggling for fitness in major tournaments such as the Gold Cup.

"They understand we need a little bit more to go any further," Trinidad and Tobago manager Wim Rijsbergen said after his team was eliminated. "We need to work more. We need a little bit more in the league."

John believes continued investment and faith in cultivating soccer in the country is necessary to grow in stature on the world stage.

"We have a domestic league that needs investment," John said. "It is a third world country, but it's developing. It is just a matter how much the culture can take the progress."

Progress will involve getting the first-team regulars back into the international fold. John expects that the two sides will return to the bargaining table soon in order to thrash out a compromise.

"All communication has broken down," John said. "I think after the Gold Cup, it will pick up."

Rijsbergen expressed confidence that the federation could settle the claims prior to the World Cup qualification efforts scheduled to start next year.

"We will try to get the best team together for the next games," Rijsbergen said. "Hopefully between now and the end of the year, we will have some discussions for the boys."

After missing out on the Gold Cup, John has been given a chance to earn back his place in the Revolution lineup. Despite starting the first four games of the season, John has fallen behind James Riley in the defensive pecking order.

With Michael Parkhurst with the U.S. national team, John should have a spot in the team for Saturday's contest against Columbus.

"While it's disappointing [not to be there], I can stake a claim for a place in the team here," John said.

Revolution boss Steve Nicol said that while the situation was unfortunate for John, it has the potential to help the club as it seeks to return to its winning ways on Saturday.

"It gives him an opportunity to step onto the field," Nicol said. "It's good for me that I can turn to Avery."
