I am happy for him but a bit confused. Did they not site work permit problems as a hinderance last time around? he's yet to play for the senior team since then...... hope they found a loop hole, or have seen something in Mats handbook that we are not aware of.

Very good player though, and I like how he went on to complete his degree dispite pressure from others to turn pro earlier.

Mutiny against Klass as..
BY Staff

Klass has been at the helm of the GFF for the past 20 years and has been coming in for strong criticism for not doing enough to enhance the sport despite the fact that the GFF receives an annual subvention of US$250,000 from its parent body FIFA.

De question begs to be asked, :Is it only theGFF that does get this moneyfrom FIFA?"  ???  ??? There are most likely supporters of Klass that would argue that Klass has been spending his own money to fund the GFF, just like a certain individual in TTFF always making this assertion.

Blessings

Good Question.... Does anyone know if TTFF also gets this subvention?

- entire Golden Jaguars retire amidst calls for Guyana Football Federation president Colin Klass to resign

By Rawle Toney

Guyana’s national football team known as the Golden Jaguars yesterday moved their battle from the field to the office of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) with the members of the team which participated in the Group H matches of the Digicel Caribbean Cup tournament in Trinidad retiring from the sport until president of the GFF Colin Klass steps down.
However, contacted for a comment yesterday Klass surprisingly told this newspaper that he knew nothing of the development.
Reports are that the players met with Klass approximately 3:00am yesterday morning outside of the Crown Plaza hotel in Trinidad and Tobago (after drawing 1-1 with Trinidad and Tobago in their final group match) as Klass was about to return to Guyana.

All 20 players told him that they would not represent Guyana any longer if he remained as president of the GFF.
According to reports, the players complained of poor standards, poor training equipment, the poor state of encampment, monies outstanding and constant disorganization during international duty.

Speaking to Stabroek Sports yesterday, captain of the national team Charles ‘Lilly’ Pollard said that the decision was made because the players felt they have had enough of the ill treatment from the Klass-led GFF.

“This move is to make sure that our future generation doesn’t suffer the same fate like us. For far too long we have had to contend with held up in allowances, asking for proper conditions for our camps among plenty other things,” said the out-spoken Pollard.

He added that although no time frame was given for Klass to step down, the players were deadly serious about their decision and would be making another statement shortly. But Klass told this newspaper that he was not aware of this development.
“This is news to me. I know nothing about the players resigning if I don’t step down. I spoke to the players in Trinidad before I returned home about other issues but not on this, so as far as I know this is not so,” said the
GFF president.

But Stabroek Sports contacted an official at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Trinidad and Tobago who reported that the incident did take place and that the players did in fact issue that ultimatum to Klass.
The official, who asked to remain anonymous, said that as a matter of fact there was even some altercation as voices were being raised by the players in what sounded like a heated argument.
“I thought that they were going to harass him (Klass) because of how furious they were. This occured around three something this morning (yesterday) as he (Klass) was preparing to leave along with some other players who checked out to return home,” said the source at the hotel.

The players are calling for support. In a statement sent to this newspaper they  appealed for help and asked their fans not to support the GFF and its activities.

“We are appealing to all our fans to boycott all GFF sanctioned football until Klass and his administration go,” the players said in a statement, adding  …”enough is enough!”

Klass has been at the helm of the GFF for the past 20 years and has been coming in for strong criticism for not doing enough to enhance the sport despite the fact that the GFF receives an annual subvention of US$250,000 from its parent body FIFA.
Recently there were several calls from persons who are very upset about the state of the sport here for Klass to step down but the GFF president has remained completely immune to those calls.

According to the statement from the players it was a shame that such a drastic set of events have had to transpire but they added that they have had enough of the administration’s incompetence.

“This is for the future of Guyana’s football. May the football world hear our cry for help!”

Football / Re: Warner to reveal corruption in Sports Ministry.
« on: September 15, 2008, 09:23:28 PM »
Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner has alleged that the Sports Company of T&T has spent more than $250 million for the construction of facilities in the country, but there is nothing to show for it.

So disgusted was Warner about the white elephants, he has despatched an urgent letter to Prime Minister Patrick Manning seeking his assistance in having the facilities completed.

Warner, who is Special Advisor of the TT Football Federation and vice president of FIFA, pointed out in a letter to Manning that numerous projects initiated by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs have either ground to a halt in many instances or have been proceeding at a snail’s pace in others.

“It is in the national interest as an MP, and in accordance with the Westminster tradition, that I feel compelled to bring to your attention the current choatic situation with regard to the administration of sport and which situation demands your urgent intervention,” Warner’s letter stated in part.

“You will recall, Honourable Prime Minister, that I first raised such concerns in the House of Representatives on September 12th instant but the situation further demands that I address same to you via this medium.

“Where the projects have been stopped, those sites have become eyesores with overgrown grass and wild foliage being rampant, and where they have been proceeding at funeral pace the materials deposited at those sites have been disappearing.

“In such a calamitous situation, as I have outlined, you will surely agree that the contractors involved in those projects should have been called upon to account for such wanton wastage and misuse of public funds. The inertia of the contractors is a major source of frustration for the sport administrators, officials and youths whom we are daily encouraging to adopt a healthy lifestyle.”

Warner also pointed out to the Prime Minister that he made reference not only to projects which are located in his constituency but also to those around the country as in the case of the proposed Indoor Facility at Malabar.
Warner cries foul with sports facilities
http://guardian.co.tt/sports4.html

To substantiate his claims, Warner enclosed photographs of the choatic situation at the Sangre Grande Youth Sport Facility on Ojoe Road, the Brian Lara Facility in Santa Cruz, the Damarie Hill Recreation ground, the Maracas Recreational Facility, the Mt St Benedict’s Tennis Courts, the Arima Youth Sports Facility on Dindial Road and the Paramin and Cocorite Recreation Grounds.

He also advised that the Sports Company of TT (SPORTT), which to date spent well over $250 million, has decided to relocate itself from the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva where it had been located from inception at no cost to the public purse, to Spetakula Promotions Building on Henry Street in Port of Spain at a monthly rental of $248,700, for which they already paid four months rent in advance.

Warner stated that he was also advised that the MInistry of Sport also intends to execute repairs to the property well in excess of half a million dollars.

Long drought ends Caledonia AIA win Courts Pro Bowl.
By: Ian Prescott (Express).

The longest of droughts, stemming from since 1978 when they won the Mt'Dor Big 4 competition as a semi-pro club, ended on Friday when Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA captured the 2008 Courts Pro Bowl title at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

It was the Morvant team's first piece of silverware in 10 years as a professional team, and they did it in style, whipping Defence Force 2-0, and even having the luxury of wasting several good goal-scoring opportunities late in the game.

Even though some parts of Morvant have not had water for days, after winning Caledonia AIA celebrated as if the reservoir had burst. Technical director Jamaal Shabazz, the man who carried the team for many years, was given a drenching with the ice bucket by his celebrating players.

Chanting "ole, ole, ole", it was a rare opportunity for the players of Caledonia to celebrate, and for a fleetingly brief moment, Shabazz was at a loss for words.

"Words cannot describe how I feel," Shabazz said. "Before this, we used to win titles in the zone, but never in the big times like in the Pro League. We have never won a title since the inception of the Pro League, so this is a major, major feat for us."

Jerry Moe, a defender of note in his day, was one of the rocks on which Shabazz built Caledonia in the early days when they dominated the East Zone. Moe, now AIA's head coach, is convinced that a burning "thirst" for success is what led Caledonia AIA past Defence Force.

"I think the fellas were just a lot more motivated. After last year, everyone made a conscious effort to improve, especially in finals," Moe said. "I think we made up for what we did last year. But more importantly, it's the start of what we want to do this year. I think Defence Force played well, but we did our homework against them. I think that gave us the edge. We were moving the ball well, and they (Defence Force) did not move the ball too well tonight."

Defence Force proved to be a huge disappointment. On the other hand, Caledonia brought their A-game to the final and destroyed Defence Force in the wide position. Hayden Tinto had a particularly good game, while World Cup midfielder Denzil Theobald also had a good game in central midfield.

Central defender Charles Pollard won the Man-of-the-Match award also spoke of the defensive stranglehold AIA had on the Army strikers.

The Army team must have gone into the game in sombre mood after the death of their equipment manager Rodney Slater, who died a few hours earlier. But a big platoon of Army recruits packed the Manny Ramjohn stands and were loudly chanting: "We are the Defence Force. We are the Defence Force." After just six minutes, they were silenced.

It happened in the blink of an eye, when veteran midfielder Kendall Velox gave Caledonia AIA a 1-0 lead. Taking down Kareem Joseph's free throw in the six-yard box, Velox quickly shot the ball over the head of keeper Kevin Graham to put his team ahead. The "Eastern Stallions" should have doubled the lead in the 33rd, but Guyanese striker Nigel Codrington wasted Velox's pass when he cut inside and hit a powerful shot over the Defence Force goal.

However, it was Codrington's good work which doubled Caledonia AIA's lead near the end of the first half, when his attempted cross was re-directed into the far corner of the Defence Force goal by the outstretched leg of defender Cory Rivers. Immediately after, Defence Force had their best chance of a goal when Michael Edwards dived in at the near post, but headed Devon Jorslyn's corner kick into the side-netting.

The second half saw further Caledonia AIA dominance, and with better finishing they would have won by a wider margin. Both Codrington and Velox had the ball in the net, but both were ruled to have scored from an off-side position. Codrington missed a few, including striking a post after beating keeper Kevin Graham. And later, Abdullah Phillip arrived free at the Defence Force back post, but still hit the ball wide of goal.

With the game almost done, Defence Force had a late surge, but young keeper Glenroy Samuel was at his best to keep out Christopher Durity's powerful low shot from 15 metres. Strikers Kevon Carter and Jorslyn also came close to scoring. In reality, though, there was just one team in this final.
Army coach praises Caledonia.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

Defence Force coach Kerry Jamerson has acknowledged that Caledonia AIA deserved to win Friday night’s final of the Courts Pro Bowl football tournament, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.

Caledonia emerged victorious courtesy of a 2-0 win, with goals from strikers Kendall Velox and Nigel Codrington.

“Overall, I think the better team on the night won the game,” said Jamerson. “I think Caledonia gave a great performance tonight over Defence Force, which is my team.

“I believe my team didn’t really come out and play how they usually play,” added the former Strike Squad midfielder. “At the end of the day, a final will always be a final and one team must win. And I believe Caledonia deserved to win tonight.”

On Tuesday, Defence Force lost 2-0 to CLICO San Juan Jabloteh in Round One Match Day Six action of the Pro League while Caledonia rallied to a come-from-behind 5-1 mauling of Ma Pau.

Jamerson refused to accept the fact that Tuesday’s results affected both teams, especially the Army-Coast Guard combination.

“I wouldn’t say that but I believe Caledonia seemed very confident in themselves,” Jamerson said. “I believe Caledonia did their homework and they played as a better group tonight.

“We will have to go back to the drawing board and I know we had a death today, (losing) one of our technical staff.”

Jamerson noted that the person, Ronald Slater, was the team’s equipment manager and was involved in the team camp up until Friday morning. When he left the camp to attend to a few work-related errands on his dispatch motorbike, at the Second Battalion base in Chaguaramas, he was struck by a car and died hours later at hospital.

“I’m not going to blame (the defeat) on that,” Jamerson added, as the team members each wore black armbands and the players took a minute’s silence as a mark of respect. “Sports will always be sports and I’m not going to blame it on that death. We had a poor game tonight.”

To the surprise of many, left-back Akile Edwards’ name was not even on the team sheet on the night. “I just decided not to use him especially as he’s going (in camp) with the national team,” said Jamerson. “I thought I could have given him a rest so he can save himself for the national team and (I could) try other players.”

On the flip side, captain Anton Pierre was used on the night, even though he will be joining the Trinidad and Tobago team for training ahead of the friendly international against England next Sunday.

“I didn’t want to give my captain any rest, because I know it’s an important game (against Caledonia),” said Jamerson. “The captain will always do good on my pitch, in (carrying) my team forward all the time.”

Defence Force is yet to maintain any form of consistency in the 2008 Pro League season and Jamerson pointed out that the team will “have to look forward in the League.

“We’re not going so well in the league either but I thought tonight we’d really bring it out,” he added. “We have to go back to the drawing board and focus on trying to reach higher in the league.

“Also, (there are) a lot of knockouts to take place,” he continued. “We’re not going to give up. We’re going to go from strength to strength.”

Telesford nets in Islanders 3-1 win over Miami Blue
Trinidad Guardian

BAYAMON—T&T defender Osei Telesford, formerly of US Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire got the opening goal as the Puerto Rico Islanders whipped Miami Blue 3-1 on Sunday in their second rain-drenched encounter of the weekend.

The Puerto Rico Islanders came to the field full of energy and sporting a new bright green uniform, ready to avenge the 2-0 loss suffered on Friday, and so they did.

From as early as the first minute the match heated up as Miami took the first free-kick, and Puerto Rico’s forward Taiwo Atieno followed suit in minute four with a powerful shot that came dangerously close to the goal.

Both squads continued their spirited exchange until a foul inside the box on Puerto Rico’s Noel Fabrice set up the first goal of the game. Victor Herrera had no problem blasting the penalty kick past keeper Josh Saunders for the score. But Miami came back in minute 24, as Alex Afonso also made good on a penalty kick that Bill Gaudette was unable to stop, evening the score 1-1.

As rain continued drenching the field, Puerto Rico kept moving forward and the Blues’ defense fended well the attack. Noah Delgado came close to doing away with the tied score with two separate powerful shots to goal in minutes 27 and 42. Saunders, however, was ready to meet the challenge and the first half closed at 1-1.

The tiebreaker the local squad was eagerly seeking finally came in minute 76. A scramble inside Miami’s box set up the perfect opportunity for Osei Telesford to put the ball into the back of the net.

The one goal advantage seemed to ignite the Islanders and stir tempers on the Miami side. Two yellow cards, followed by a red card expulsion for Cristiano Dias seemed to doom the visitors.

In minute 89 Puerto Rico closed the deal for good. An assist from Noah Delgado found Taiwo Atieno ready to blast in the third and final goal of the game.

The Islanders will stay home the rest of the week as they get ready to host the Montreal Impact on Friday, May 2.
