Football / Re: Photos of Tuesday's training session
« on: June 28, 2005, 09:11:36 PM »
Day 2 of training, more men in camp, more pace more effort, and yes Coach keeping them moving.  A couple of time in between drills men was heading for the sidelines and he called them to the center circle.
The guys too seem to be going full speed, as evidenced by some particularly hard tackles for a practicersession, that resulted in Stern on the ground after the keeped slide tackle him, I think Theobold had to get looked at also, and the pic of Stern on the ground is from him going out of bounds for a errant pass.
Dont really know the guys well enough to give individual accounts of how they looked, to me, Birchall looked a lil sluggish, expected to see more muscular development for a pro baller.  Silvio looks pretty sharp and somebody catch a buff for trying to beat in the 18 yard box.  "We're playing 7 v 7 and you are playing individual ball!!"

After watching Mexico play against Argentina and Brazil, I think they are based on current form, in the top 3 in the world. Any thoughts?

Mexico may not even be the #1 team in the CONCACAF, but you have them top 3, because of a good run in the 'Fed Cup, I guess you have TnT in the top 5 then?

Football / Rain today in South Florida
« on: June 28, 2005, 07:47:55 AM »
Nuff rain from early on today in ft laduderdale, not the usualy mid afternoon thunderstorm, that would have allowed at least half a days training.  But since the first 3 games will be played here in Miami, it is quite likely to be wet and raining during those games so maybe its not such a bad thing.

So a lil bit of the practice yesterday.  Only stuck around for two drills, the first one seemed to have the guys confused for a bit as to what they were supposed to be doing.  Where to pass the ball to and where to run to after passing the ball, but I cant lie I heard the coach explain it and I too was confused, but they settled down and got it after a while.
The 2nd was similar to the keep away drill with a man or men in the middle of a circle and everyone else keeps the ball away, preferrable with one touch passes.  This time there were 3 teams Blue, Yellow and Grey, with two teams of say 6 each keeping the ball away from the 3rd.  If the ball was lost by Blue to Grey, it would then be Blue's turn in the middle.
Having not participated in organized football and practices beyond the High School level, I will refrain from commenting on their performance during this drill, but I will mention that one of the coaches kept lamenting the lack of ball control that was leading to the turnovers.

P.S. Someone remarked how 'chubby' Stern was looking

What about Track & Field / Re: Burns beats Brown in 100m scorcher.
« on: June 27, 2005, 02:40:00 PM »
Ato's comments:
All comers records or championships records are not important to me, or anyone else when they are in Trinidad. That track has been ratified less than a month!
A legit championships that EVERY YEAR don't have bogus times is. I already gave u the example of last year's times for the women which were totally wrong - and which they put in the books.
Raising your game is one thing, not 10 people (W and M) PRing in the same meet in the 100. No-one broke 10.3 in the heats, so I am glad you raised that point. When have u ever seen heats at 10.3 and finals the same day in 9.9? Not at NCAAs this year, where no-one broke 10.3 in the heats and then 10.21 won. Not in the US, GB - anywhere, it has never happened before. Of course I will not have any press comments to discourage so many, because that is not my aim - but at the same time, don't even take my word for it now - just watch - watch the rest of the season. I have no clue what you are talking about with margin of victory and placings - that is completely illogical in terms of what I am talking about...what difference does that make?
I'll leave u with this. Asafa ran 10.04 to win his trials - which would have been 4th place at the Trinidad trials....???
Look up Harper's performances this year then tell me where those times fell out of the sky from. Then look up Armstrong's. 3 tenths and 4 tenths of a second don't fall out of the sky, folks. Not in the 100. You don't come into trials anywhere with a 10.5 best and run 10.10. Never been done - anywhere ever, and if so, show me, cuz I have been to every meet that has mattered since 1992.

But what do I know.....

Just make sure everyone comes back and says "ok Ato u did call this one," in about 2 months, cuz all the 10.0 and 10.10 guys from trials are going to run 10.3 and 10.4 just like they were before the "magic carpet ride" yesterday.
JUST watch, I am not going to discuss it further.

I speak to BURNS and Brown on a DAILY basis. You heard that? DAILY! So this is not about bitterness. What am I bitter about...? I want it to be done legitimately, not some phantom time that you chase and totally screws up your confidence for the rest of the year, maybe career. As soon as they run fast outside of that stadium with those officials who I saw get it WRONG last year in a major meet like the trials, and refused to change it, THEN - and remember that my red flag is not BURNS or BROWN, they CAN do those times even if I think they didn't yesterday - it's the ones behind them who have never been anywhere in that vicinity who now have....I believe places 1-6 were PRs in that race yesterday - which, as all statisticians like myself know, is ALWAYS a huge red flag - it does not happen in track in the 100. The Olympic finals in 04, 00 and 96 combined produced maybe 3 PRs (Gatlin, Doovan, Myself) When u look at some old lists and see *doubtful timing* next to it - it's usually things like this. Don't act like this is uncommon in the sport either....they threw out a whole bunch of times from Edmonton and that was the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! WHY do u think that was? Look it up. Something made them go check the wind gauge - yep - everyone PRing in the same race by huge amounts!

Its a bold move to come out against those times, especially being who he is.  But, if you go to the forum you will see he repeatedly gives point by point examples of why he is suspicious of the times, so at least he is not just hating because 'new dogs' run some fast time, I actually belive he wants the time to be legit, so that respectability can be restored to published and recorded times coming out of Trinidad and Tobago.
Me personally I hope that the race was so hottly contested that they just brought out the best in each other in that particular race.
I guess time will tell.
Either way I want to see us in a 4x100m soon.

I am sure we all understand wanting to have your players in for the full training camp.  But, a statement like that to me shows that he may indeed be a selfish person incapable of thinking of others before himself. At the very least prone to unprofessional statements to the media, so he just plain chupid!
It worries me that Sam may end up playing for Port Vale, and this guy holds the fate of two of our players in his hand.
Big Ups to Birchall though!!

Football / Re: Ince: I lost my temper!
« on: June 26, 2005, 01:46:12 PM »
I think Ince lost nuff points for walking out on the team before a WCQ, I think he gained some points badk for admitting that he made a rash decision in the heat of the moment, and even more for still offering his services to the National team once he is physically and contractually fit again.  However he is still in the negative in terms of points because of the walk out and subsequent excuses.
I am not well versed on the ins and outs of the players disputes with the TTFF over the years, but it appears to me that there are and have been some legitimate beefs on the parts of the players, so if indeed he found it necessary to sought out his future and not depend on the TTFF too look out for him and his family should he get seriously injured, I cant blame him for that, but as he said he is willing to play hurt if needed, he could and should have sat on the bench vs Panama just in case the unthinkable happened and his services were needed.  Had we lost that game in the manner in which we lost to Mexico (shaky keeping), I dare say he would be on the outs with the TTFF and many in this fourm forever.

Football / Re: Asafa powell just smash the 100 meter record
« on: June 15, 2005, 04:50:50 PM »
The Gov't or the Administration, some agency of higher authority needs to be providing some support.  If I am not mistaken Powell still lives and trains in JA, attending the Univ. of Technology.  Who among us thinks that Ato could have accomplished what he did had he remained in Trinidad, attended UWI, and had to rely on the Govt/Adminstration and his own personal finances to train and travel to compete?
As for soccer being a a priority of the US Gov't, it may not be high on George W's list, but in 2000 the US soccer Federation (or whatever they are called) stated that the US intended on winning the 2010 World Cup.  Since then there has been increased emphasis on development at the younger levels.  Here in south florida, there are numerous teams in many leagues and tournaments in and out of state.  It might be just me but I think the US is serious bout that 2010 WC.

Aint no reason why we the people cant step in and fill the void that we so easily blame the Gov't for creating.  I remember once hearing Ato speak of forming A.T.O. Athletes Towards Olympics, I could not wait for that and wondered how I could be involved, but I guess I too am guilty of being reactive and dependent instead of proactive and independent.

Football / Re: Asafa powell just smash the 100 meter record
« on: June 15, 2005, 02:57:32 PM »
My issue is not with our athletes, otherwise I would have said When Brown when!! or mentioned another athlete by name.  I think all our athletes out there on the circuit and in the colleges are doing commendable jobs, but I think there is a lack of support from the TnT Gov't for most of these athletes.  The kind of support that would create a larger pool of talent from which to draw new record breakers, the kind of support that would allow these athletes to maintain an easier lifestyle while living and training abroad.  How many of us know talented kids at home, be it acedemically or athletically that need a lil assistance in moving on to the next level, be it obtaining that college scholarhsip or even just the means to pursue their chosen path?  How many of them are contacted by someone in the Ministry of Sports to say "do you need help contacting coaches and colleges? Are you a member of a local club and if so are you able to make it to practice and games or meets?

so again I bump my gums and ask...
When TnT when??

Football / Re: Griffith: No billion-dollar sports complex
« on: June 15, 2005, 11:07:09 AM »
Thats a whole lotta money for a complex, when there are indeed many other areas of the country that need fixing. Even if we were to focus on just sports and athletes alone: we are in need of more developmental programs for the youth that will recognize talent and nuture it.  The gov't should be actively involved from the early stages in a promising athletes development, not just sit back wait until they have secured their own scholarhsip, endured and financed their own training, then rely on their patriotism to bring them back to the fold to wear the Red, White and Black when we need to form a national team.  When you take a reactive approach like that you end up with athletes like Kerron Clement waving the US flag.
Wouldn't it be great if two football teams primary schoolers and high schoolers of the most promising ones in thse age groups attened summer soccer camps abroad (US and/or UK), competed in tournaments, developed fundamental skills and learned to play with each other from a young age.
It might be just me but that would set us up real good for the future.

Are honest hard working Teachers, and Protective servicemen paid enough?

Haven't seen that many games, but been following the games recently. Right now I going with Carlos Edwards, he is a fella defenses have to pay attention to or he will sneak around a man and either end up in front of goal or making a troubling pass.
He may not be the best on the team but solid and consistent.

When I called about tickets and seating in the Orange Bowl, I was told that all $20 tickets were General Admission.  So basically we need to show up en mass, and show up early and lock down a good section.

I disagree with the name change, and I will always call them the Soca Warriors.  'Soca' identifies the team as being from Trinbago, and does not express gaiety as Mr. Warner believes.
