What about Track & Field / Penn Relays 2023

I went to the Relays for the first time last Saturday. It was well worth it sitting in the drizzling rain. The competition was at a very high standard. Our high school kids have a long, long way to go. QRC came 4th in the 4x100 on Friday. Sad I did not see them live. The JA HS schools ruled in almost all the events. The JA crowd support is overwhelming. The highlight of the day was 100 meters for men 85 and over. The crowd was cheering the ultra seniors. The guy who came in last was 96 years old. It was a beautiful sight to behold. I would recommend this Penn Relays to anyone. Blessings Forumites!!!!

Cape Verde have made history by becoming the smallest country ever to qualify for the Fiba Basketball World Cup.
With a population of just over 500,000, the Atlantic island nation beat the record previously held by Montenegro, who qualified in 2019.

Tyra Gittens is hungry for Commonwealth Games success.
“I’m going to starve myself until I get there,” the Trinidad and Tobago athlete declared. “I literally eat, breathe and sleep this.”
On Saturday, Gittens was eliminated from the World Championship women’s long jump. She finished 19th in qualifying with a 6.44 metres leap at Hayward Field here in Eugene, Oregon, USA., and then immediately switched her focus to the July 28 to August 8 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Gittens, who switched from the heptathlon to the individual long jump and high jump this season, plans to go medal hunting in both events in Birmingham. The final decision, however, will be made after consultation with her coach, Haitian-born Canadian Edrick Floreal.
“We’ll see what he says,” Gittens told the Express, “but for now, long and high. I don’t mind doing both to take my mind off of something. I like to do a lot. My mind needs that stimulation. Focusing on one thing has been so hard. But while the hep was definitely my personality, I don’t regret not going back to it.
“That decision,” she continued, “was fully to preserve my body and my professional career. I did a lot collegiately.”
Last year, Gittens finished tenth in the Olympic Games long jump final, and also produced a 6.96m national record leap. The 2022 season has not been as successful. Her best jump to date this year is 6.69.
“We all have to face it no matter what we’re doing in life. We all have those seasons. I think I’m going through mine. But I’m happy because it’s kind of early in my career and I’m a pretty good swimmer, so I think I’ll make it.”
Gittens said her World Championship disappointment makes the Commonwealth Games outing all the more important.
“Oh my gosh, yes. You might not know, I’m a sore loser. I will do it with a smile, but you should see my journal. And it’s not against the athletes. It’s just that I know what I can do. I have so much faith, and my support group, my family, they don’t let stuff slide. Obviously they’re proud of me because of where I am, but they know what I’m capable of and they know when I’m not there.
“They hold me accountable,” Gittens continued, “and so does my fiancé (Donavan Spotsville). He’s a very important person in my life and my career right now. When stuff doesn’t go good, it’s disappointing, but not because I feel like I let anybody down. It’s because I know what I can do, I know I represent a lot, and it means a lot to me.”

Like nobody notice U-20 T&F going on in Nairobi. Just by chance flicking thru the channels that I got it on nbcsports. They are about 8 hrs ahead. A 17 year old JA won the women's 100 in fine style. 11.08. A Namibian yuteman won the men 100. A Grenadian and a Cuban were the Caribbean rep, I think the Cuban came in 3rd. That's all folks.

This article is about Richard "Richie" Peters from Sando area. He played for Prez and South Colleges and Youth teams. He also played for the now defunct Sando Juniors and Rutgers University, Camden, New Jersey. I played against him in all those teams. It appears that he has covid. I did not read the entire article because you have to sign up. He has been in JA 20 yrs now. Anyone of the Southies can get more info. By the way Richie was a damn good player(striker). It was just that there were other damn good players around. He tried out for the 74 youth team. He had serious competition from Chinapoo, Murrel, Winty Hacket, Mike Grayson.

T&T's Tyra Gittens put on an amazing record-breaking performance to claim the NCAA pentathlon national championship with a score of 4,764 points at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas in the United States on Thursday evening.
The University of Texas A&M junior also set a new national record, the previous mark being 4,276, which was held by her and is the most in the pentathlon by a women's athlete from a Caribbean nation.
While setting a collegiate record, the multi-athlete also set a facility record and became the first female Aggie to win an individual indoor title since 2014 when Brea Garrett won the weight throw.
"Today (Thursday) means so much to me. When I was a freshman and looked at the collegiate record I just thought ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t think I can do that but I can come somewhere in that area’.
"As I matured, I definitely realised that it can be more achievable than I thought and I was so happy that I was able to do it today, "The national champion Gittens was quoted saying on the Texas A&M website.
En route to setting an overall personal best in the pentathlon, she set personal records in three of the five events, while winning three events.
Gittens’ day started with clocking 8.27 in the 60m hurdles, .01 seconds faster than her previous personal best. She followed by winning the high jump at 1.93m, which bettered her previous school record of 1.91m. The high-flyer owns the top five all-time performances in Aggie history, she has cleared 1.93m, 1.91m, 1.89m, 1.88m and 1.87m in her career. Her clearance also equalled the T&T national record held by Natasha Alleyne-Gibson.
She continued to show her dominance winning the shot put at 13.86m, less than two inches short of her personal record. The junior followed by winning the long jump on her final attempt at 6.58m, which was just short of her personal record of 6.62m.
Gittens capped the record performance by clocking a personal-best 800m time of 2:28.22, which produced an overall pentathlon score of 4,764.
“I think the 800 was definitely the thing that I’m most proud of because of how much of a mental block and just mental funk it is for me. Even though it wasn’t an amazing time, I broke out of that mental blockage and it was definitely needed today. I came into the meet saying, ‘However, anything else goes, I don’t care because the 800 is one thing that I know I need to work on. And I was so happy. I could cry that it turned out the way it did and I stuck to it. I stuck to the plan,” said Gittens on her fantastic showing in the two-lap event.
Texas A&M's head coach Pat Henry raved about Gittens’ achievement saying: "It was the finest effort any collegiate athlete has ever had. To do the things she did and start off with a personal best in the 60m hurdles and clear 6-4 in the high jump is absolutely a tremendous start. She came to this meet with a lot of intention, an intention to win this championship.
“Tyra [Gittens] didn't win the SEC title two weeks ago and it shows the whole team that it's about how you think. If you're a positive person and go in there with the experiences you've had, be ready to do it on this day. This is the day that you have to put everything you know together to try to win an event. I forget about PanAm. Saturday I found it when I was flicking thru the channels. I even forgot we send a football team. The men lost 4-2 to Mex. after leading 2 nil at the half. I Think Uruguay won the gold.
