F A M I L Y

I ran into a stranger as he passed by,
"Oh excuse me please" was my reply.

He said, "Please excuse me too;
I wasn't watching for you."

We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told,
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal,
My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
"Move out of the way," I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken.
I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken

While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,

"While dealing with a stranger,
common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.

Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You'll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.

He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,
you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."

By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.

I quietly went and knelt by his bed;
"Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.

"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"
He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.

I picked 'em because they're pretty like you.
I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."

I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."
He said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay.
I love you anyway."

I said, "Son, I love you too,
and I do like the flowers, especially the blue."

FAMILY
Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company
that we are working for could easily replace us in < /SPAN>
a matter of days.
But the family we left behind will feel the loss
for the rest of their lives.

And come to think o f it, we pour ourselves more
into work than into our own family,
an unwise investment indeed,
don't you think?
So what is behind the story?

Do you know what the word FAMILY means?
FAMILY = (F)ATHER (A)ND (M)OTHER (I) (L)OVE (Y)OU

Pass this message to 7 people except you and me.

You will receive a miracle tomorrow.
Don't ignore and God will bless you

I'm looking at buying a 2007 Nissan Murano.
Anybody here that drives one of those or an earlier model?
The main question I have is that if a vehicle has AWD capability does it still need Traction and Stability controls?
I can see the need for it on a FWD vehicle..just want to know if it going to make any difference on an AWD.

General Discussion / What if our Government did like Bolivia?
« on: October 29, 2006, 02:03:38 PM »
I remembered reading this article a few months back thinking whether or not Morales would've gotten through with this plan without much trouble.

Looks like all the companies did sign over a bigger percentage of their profits to the state after all yesterday.

Allyuh think our government would have the balls to do somethign similar to protect the future of our people?
Do you think it will suit T&T?
Ah know it go be more money for them to spend and send inflation out of control but then again is more revenue we talking bout.
We should be spendign money on social services etc rather than tsunami shelters.

George Monbiot

The Guardian

When two poor countries reclaimed oilfields, why did just one spark uproar?

The outcry over Bolivia's renationalisation and the silence over Chad's betrays the hypocrisy of the critics.

Civilisation has a new enemy. He is a former coca grower called Evo Morales, who is currently the president of Bolivia. Yesterday he stood before the European parliament to explain why he had sent troops to regain control of his country's gas and oil fields. Bolivia's resources, he says, have been "looted by foreign companies", and he is reclaiming them for the benefit of his people. Last week, he told the summit of Latin American and European leaders in Vienna that the corporations which have been extracting the country's fossil fuels would not be compensated for these seizures.

You can probably guess how this has gone down. Tony Blair urged him to use his power responsibly, which is like Mark Oaten lecturing the Pope on sexual continence. Condoleezza Rice accused him of "demagoguery". The Economist announced that Bolivia was "moving backwards". The Times, in a marvellously haughty leader, called Morales "petulant", "xenophobic" and "capricious", and labelled his seizure of the gas fields "a gesture as childish as it is eye-catching".
Never mind that the privatisation of Bolivia's gas and oil in the 1990s was almost certainly illegal, as it took place without the consent of congress. Never mind that - until now - its natural wealth has only impoverished its people. Never mind that Morales had promised to regain national control of Bolivia's natural resources before he became president, and that the policy has massive support among Bolivians. It can't be long before Donald Rumsfeld calls him the new Hitler and Bush makes another speech about freedom and democracy being threatened by freedom and democracy.

This huffing and puffing is dressed up as concern for the people of Bolivia. The Financial Times fretted about the potential for "mismanagement and corruption". The Economist warned that while the government "may get richer, its people are likely to grow even poorer". The Times lamented that Morales had "set back Bolivia's development by 10 years or so ... the most vulnerable groups will find that an economic lifeline is soon removed from their reach". All this is humbug.

Four days before Morales seized the gas fields - on May 1 - an even bigger expropriation took place in an even poorer country: the African republic of Chad. When the Chadian government reasserted control over its oil revenues, not only did it ensure that an intended lifeline for the poor really was removed from their reach, but it also brought the World Bank's claims to be using oil as a social welfare programme crashing down in flames. So how did all those bold critics of Morales respond? They didn't. The whole hypocritical horde of them looked the other way.

The World Bank decided to fund Chad's massive oil scheme in 2000, after extracting a promise from the government of Idriss Deby - which has a terrible human rights record - that the profits would be used for the benefit of the country's people. Deby's administration passed a law allocating 85% of the government's oil revenues to education, health and development, and placing 10% "in trust for future generations". This, the bank said, amounted to "an unprecedented system of safeguards to ensure that these revenues would be used to finance development in Chad".

Without the World Bank, the project could not have gone ahead. It was asked to participate by Exxon, the leading partner in the project, to provide insurance against political risk. The bank's different lending arms stumped up a total of $333m, and the European Investment Bank threw in another $120m. The oil companies (Exxon, Petronas and Chevron) started drilling 300 wells in the south of the country, and building a pipeline to a port in Cameroon, which opened in 2003.

Environmentalists predicted that the pipeline would damage the rainforests of Cameroon and displace the indigenous people who lived there; that the oil companies would consume much of Chad's scarce water and that an influx of oil workers would be accompanied by an influx of Aids. They also argued that subsidising oil companies in the name of social welfare was a radical reinterpretation of the bank's mandate. As long ago as 1997, the Environmental Defence Fund warned that the government of Chad would not keep its promises to use the money for alleviating poverty. In 1999, researchers from Harvard Law School examined the law the government had passed, and predicted that the authorities "have little intention of allowing it to affect local practice".

In 2000, the oil companies gave the government of Chad a "signing bonus" of $4.5m, which it immediately spent on arms. Then, at the beginning of 2006, it simply tore up the law it had passed in 1998. It redefined the development budget to include security, seized the fund set aside for future generations, and diverted 30% of the total revenues into "general spending", which, in Chad, is another term for guns. The World Bank, embarrassed by the fulfilment of all the predictions its critics had made, froze the revenues the government had deposited in London and suspended the remainder of its loans. The Chadian government responded by warning that it would simply shut down the oil wells. The corporations ran to daddy (the US government) and, on April 27, the bank caved in. Its new agreement with Chad entitles Deby to pretty well everything he has already taken.

The World Bank's attempts to save face are almost funny. Last year, it said that the scheme was "a pioneering and collaborative effort ... to demonstrate that large-scale crude oil projects can significantly improve prospects for sustainable long-term development". In other words, it was a model for oil-producing countries to follow. Now it tells us that the project in Chad was "less a model for all oil-producing countries than a unique solution to a unique challenge". But, however much it wriggles, it cannot disguise the fact that the government's reassertion of control is a disaster both for the bank and for the impoverished people it claimed to be helping. Since the project began, Chad has fallen from 167th to 173rd on the UN's human development index, and life expectancy there has dropped from 44.7 to 43.6 years. If, by contrast, Morales does as he has promised and uses the extra revenues from Bolivia's gas fields in the same way as Hugo Chávez has used the money from Venezuela's oil, the result is likely to be a major improvement in his people's welfare.

So, on the one hand, you have a man who has kept his promises by regaining control over the money from the hydrocarbon industry, in order to use it to help the poor. On the other, you have a man who has broken his promises by regaining control over the money from the hydrocarbon industry, in order to buy guns. The first man is vilified as irresponsible, childish and capricious. The second man is left to get on with it. Why? Well, Deby's actions don't hurt the oil companies. Morales's do. When Blair and Rice and the Times and all the other apologists for undemocratic power say "the people", they mean the corporations. The reason they hate Morales is that when he says "the people", he means the people.

Other Sports / Schumacher announces retirement
« on: September 10, 2006, 07:45:04 AM »
Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher will retire from Formula One at the end of the season.
The German made the announcement after winning the Italian Grand Prix to reduce title rival Fernando Alonso's lead to just two points.

The Ferrari star's victory was the 90th in a career in which Schumacher has broken every single F1 record.

He will be remembered as one of the greatest, and most controversial, drivers in the history of the sport.

"I have decided that I am going to retire from racing. It has been an exceptional time," the 37-year-old said.

"What motorsport has gven me over the last 30 years, I have loved every minute of it."

Schumacher, who will be replaced at Ferrari by Finn Kimi Raikkonen, has dominated the sport since the death of Ayrton Senna in 1994.

That was the year in which Schumacher won his first world title, with Benetton-Ford, and he added further championships in 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

But his legacy will also be as a driver who stretched the rules to their limit and sometimes beyond in his quest for success.

Michael Schumacher will retire from Formula One at the end of the season, Ferrari revealed this evening.

The team issued two statements, one confirming Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa as drivers next season and another revealing the retirement of the sport's most successful driver.

Schumacher, who won today's Italian Grand Prix, will not necessarily leave Ferrari, with the team statement revealing a "new role" will be revealed shortly.

Schumacher said: "Words are not enough and whatever I could say now will never fully express how much I love this fascinating world of motorsport and all it has given me.

"From go-karting to Formula One I have lived through moments that I will never forget."

Schumacher's win today was his 90th in Formula One and brings him within two points of championship leader Fernando Alonso as he chases an unprecedented eighth world title.

Football / Egypt's Abdelwahab dies on pitch
« on: August 31, 2006, 04:54:35 AM »
Egyptian international Mohamed Abdelwahab collapsed and died on the pitch during a training session.
The 23-year-old defender, who helped Egypt win the Afican Cup of Nations this year, collapsed 35 minutes into a training session with his club Ahly.

"He did not clash with another player, he just fall on the ground," a club spokesman told BBC Sport.

He was rushed to hospital but died before arriving, a cause of death is yet to be established.

"It might be a heart attack but we are not sure yet," the team doctor said.

His death caused has sent a shockwave of sadness amongst the public.

The player was yet to play an official match with his Egyptian club this season after he refused to rejoin his club Al Dafraa from Emirates, who did not want to to sell him to Ahly.

He had spent two years with the Cairo-based club and helped them to win the African Champions League last year.

Fifa were planning to investigate the dispute between the two clubs next month.

Football / New England Skipper
« on: August 10, 2006, 12:08:04 PM »
Terry named new England skipper

It is the ultimate honour to be the captain of your country and I am very proud

John Terry
John Terry has been named as the new captain of the England football team.
The 25-year-old was confirmed as David Beckham's successor on Thursday, with Steven Gerrard made vice-captain by new England coach Steve McClaren.

Terry begins his reign as captain in McClaren's first match in charge, a friendly against Greece on 16 August.

McClaren told the Football Association's website: "I'm convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains England has ever had."

McClaren said that the respect that Chelsea skipper Terry commanded among his fellow professionals was behind his decision.

"John has all the attributes an international captain needs - leadership, authority, courage, ability, tactical awareness and a total refusal to accept second-best," he said.

"He has been an inspiration for Chelsea and is at his best in adversity.

"Over the five years I've been involved with the England coaching set-up I've seen first hand the respect that John has among his fellow players.

"There are a number of strong leaders in the squad and he will not lack support on and off the pitch."

Terry said he was delighted with the appointment.

"It is the ultimate honour to be the captain of your country and I am very proud to be given this great opportunity," he said.

"It is an incredible challenge and one I am looking forward to very much."

Steven Gerrard offered his congratulations to his Chelsea counterpart.

"I would like to congratulate John on being appointed England captain. I'm sure he'll do a great job," he said.

"He's a tremendous leader for Chelsea and has all the qualities required to do the role.

"I'm also pleased to have been appointed vice-captain by Steve McClaren today. I am grateful that Steve took the time to call me and inform me of his decision.

"There are a number of captains in the England squad and I know we will all be giving 100% support to Steve and John."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said he was always confident Terry would be named captain.

"I knew Steve was inside and from the inside he could not think twice but to choose JT as England captain," he said.

606: Have your say

"JT deserves it. England deserves a captain like him. He loves to work, loves to win, loves to make people happy and confident."

Former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri, who made Terry club captain, agreed England had made the right choice.

"I made him captain because he is a leader who always thinks of his team-mates and the squad," Ranieri told BBC Radio Five Live.

"He was respected by his team-mates because he's very correct and very serious and he's a great player and a great man.

"When he was young he made little mistakes [off the pitch], but now he's a man and Steve McClaren has made the best decision."

Terry has won 29 caps since making his debut against Serbia and Montenegro on 3 June 2003.

Beckham stepped down as England captain one day after his team were knocked out of the World Cup quarter-finals by Portugal.

The midfielder had been skipper for six years after being handed the armband by stand-in coach Peter Taylor in 2000.

Central defender Terry was the bookmakers' odds-on favourite to follow Beckham, although many tipped Gerrard to take the role.

A poll commissioned by the BBC Sport website and Radio Five Live had revealed that England fans were divided over who should be the new national captain.

Terry gained 51% of the votes, Gerrard polled 46% and Gary Neville got 2%.

General Discussion / BP: Alaskan Pipeline closing may last for months
« on: August 07, 2006, 11:00:40 PM »
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - BP said Monday it discovered corrosion so severe that it will have to replace 16 miles of pipeline at the huge Prudhoe Bay oil field — work that could shut down the nation's single biggest source of domestic crude for months and drive gasoline prices even higher.

Oil prices climbed more than $2 a barrel on the news, and gasoline futures rose, too. The West Coast is expected to be squeezed particularly hard, and the government is considering releasing oil from its emergency stockpile to ease the crunch.

BP PLC said it will have to replace most of the 22 miles of so-called transit pipeline at Prudhoe Bay, which produces about 2.6 percent of the nation's daily supply including imports, or about 400,000 barrels a day.

BP, the world's second-largest oil company, discovered the extent of the corrosion with tests that were ordered by the federal government after a big oil spill last March at Prudhoe Bay, situated above the Arctic Circle, 650 miles north of Anchorage.

The oil company said it was surprised to find such severe corrosion, and had gone 14 years without using a device called a "pig" to clean out its lines because it did not believe it was necessary.

Bob Malone, chairman of BP America, said that in a worst-case scenario, it could take weeks or months to replace the pipelines. But the company said it will try to put portions of the network back into operation as they are repaired.

"BP deeply regrets it has been necessary for us to take this drastic action," Malone said.

BP operates the Prudhoe Bay oil field for itself and for other oil companies, namely ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil. Prudhoe Bay and other oilfields on Alaska's North Slope feed oil into the 800-mile trans-Alaska pipeline. The North Slope produces approximately 800,000 barrels a day; Prudhoe Bay accounts for half of that.

BP officials said they did not immediately know how much it would cost to replace the lines. The company made $7.3 billion in profit during the most recent quarter.

"We estimate it could take between 2-3 months to get it back on line," Bruce Lanni, an industry analyst with A.G. Edwards, wrote in a research note. "However, there are no assurances that it will return to current capacity, given the complexities and age of the reservoirs. Thus, we would not be surprised to see volume losses in the area of 5 percent to 10 percent."

Steve Marshall, president of BP Alaska Exploration Inc., said tests Friday indicated that there were 16 anomalies in 12 areas in a transit line on the eastern side of Prudhoe Bay. Tests found losses in wall thickness of between 70 percent and 81 percent. Repair or replacement is required if there is more than an 80 percent loss.

BP also said Sunday that workers found a small spill of about four to five barrels.

The aging pipeline system on the North Slope has been fraught with problems lately.

BP discovered corrosion in the transit lines only after the U.S. Transportation Department ordered their inspection following a spill of up to 270,000 gallons in March. It was the biggest spill in North Slope history, and has become part of a criminal investigation into the company's Alaskan operations.

Company officials said they did not believe a routine maintenance "pigging" of those lines was necessary because they carry clean crude from which water has been removed.
Marshall said the company believed ultrasonic testing of pipeline wall thickness was sufficient. But he said the company has since learned otherwise.

"Clearly, we are already in the process of adjusting considerably our corrosion program," Marshall said.

The news sent the price of light, sweet crude oil up 2.22, or 3 percent, to settle at $76.98 a barrel Monday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after peaking at $77.30 earlier in the day

The average U.S. retail price of a gallon of unleaded, regular gasoline was $3.036 on Monday — near its all-time high of $3.057, reached Sept. 5 after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.

Gasoline futures also rose, indicating that the market expects prices at the pump to increase further.

Because of the disruption of supplies, the Energy Department said it is prepared to provide oil from the government's emergency supplies if a refinery requests it.

"If there is a request for oil we'll certainly take a serious look at that," spokesman Craig Stevens said.

California gets about 20 percent of its oil from Alaska, with the remainder coming from in state and foreign sources.

The reserve has about 700 million barrels in storage on the Gulf Coast to be used in case of a serious supply disruption. The Energy Department in the past has lent some of the oil to refineries when there were disruptions because of pipeline problems or other troubles.

Bill Hedges, BP's technical expert on corrosion, said the Prudhoe Bay pipelines were initially designed to last 25 years, but have now lasted 29 years, with many of the lines in "excellent condition."

The company said it is spending $72 million this year to fight corrosion, up from $60 million last year. BP puts millions of gallons of corrosion inhibitor into the pipelines each year. It also examines pipes via X-rays and ultrasound images.

BP has a 26 percent stake in the Prudhoe Bay field, meaning its own production would be cut by 100,000 barrels a day, or around 2.5 percent of the company's worldwide production, said spokesman David Nicholas. He declined to say what the effect might be on earnings.

U.S. shares of BP PLC fell $1.19, or 1.6 percent, to $71.35 in morning trading on the        New York Stock Exchange. Shares of BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust, which derives revenue from royalties of BP's Prudhoe Bay oil, fell $9.12, or 10.4 percent, to $78.77 on the NYSE.

Football / Sir Bobby Robson suffers illness scare
« on: August 05, 2006, 02:25:14 PM »
Former England manager Sir Bobby Robson was taken to hospital during the first-half of Ipswich's clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 73-year-old, who was paraded in front of the crowd at Portman Road after being named honorary club president, complained of feeling unwell 10 minutes into the game.

A statement released by the club read: "He was attended by the club doctor and, as a precaution, was transferred to Ipswich hospital.

"The club has no further comment to make."

Robson's cancer specialist, Dr Hugh Davies, was Robson's guest at the match and accompanied him to the hospital.

Robson had a cancerous tumour, spotted when he had an X-ray following a skiing accident, removed from his lung in May.

That was the third time he has had a cancer scare - having beaten the illness twice before, in 1992 and 1995.

Football / Marvin Andrews days at Rangers are over
« on: July 23, 2006, 07:24:13 AM »
Marvin booted out by Le Guen.
By Gavin Berry.

Marvin Andrews has been told his Rangers career is over after a showdown meeting with Paul Le Guen. The giant stopper met the new Ibrox boss for the first time last week after being given time off after the World Cup. And it wasn't good news for the Trinidad and Tobago star who was informed he's surplus to requirements.
Andrews earned a third year on the deal he signed in 2004 when he made more than 50 starts under previous boss Alex McLeish. But Le Guen is willing to let the 30-year-old go for nothing if he can find another club.
The former Livingston and Raith Rovers man played in a closed-door friendly against Gretna at Murray Park and didn't cover himself in glory in a 4-0 defeat.
He has been struggling with the knee injury he refused to have surgery on just over a year ago and which came back to haunt him in the summer when it ruled him out of the World Cup.
The news he can go will come as a further blow to Andrews who didn't feature in yesterday's friendly with Middlesbrough. Le Guen said: "I met Marvin and told him if there are any possibilities he can go. It was my decision.
"He has a contract for another year but we are willing to let him go for free."
There were raised eyebrows when McLeish signed Andrews on a Bosman from Livingston two years ago. But the player became a cult figure with Ibrox fans in his first season when he helped them lift the title.
During that campaign he defied medical advice to play on with a cruciate injury despite being told he needed surgery on the knock. His never-say-die attitude won him admirers, as did his "Keep Believing" messages when the league looked beyond them.
Meanwhile, Le Guen reckons the players he has at his disposal should be good enough to win the league in his first season. The Frenchman is still looking to add strength but said: "Hopefully the squad we have would be good enough to win the league. "If we can get one or two players more it would be great but I'm happy with what I have."
Dunfermline: We want Marvin Andrews.
By: John Docherty (Daily Record).

Leish keen on cut-price deal.
Dunfermline boss Jim Leishman has admitted he is keen to bring Marvin Andrews to East End Park - but only if the price is right. The towering Trinidad and Tobago stopper was told at the weekend by Rangers boss Paul Le Guen he can leave Ibrox. And Leishman said: "Marvin is the type of player we would definitely consider but only if he came within our budget." Andrews has endured a miserable summer after being forced to pull out of the Caribbean country's World Cup adventure because of his persistent knee problem. But while the defender has refused treatment on his cruciate injury, casting doubts over his long-term future, his battling qualities are already well known to the Pars manager, who signed him for Livingston from Raith Rovers.
Andrews has also turned down six offers from England to stay close to his Fife church. The Rangers defender has been told he will not feature in the plans of Paul Le Guen, the new manager, and the club have agreed to a free transfer despite having activated an automatic one-year extension.
The Herald understands Wolves, Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle were among the English sides willing to secure the services of the Trinidad and Tobago defender, but Andrews has made up his mind to stay in Scotland and be close to the Zion Praise Centre, with which he is heavily involved.
Hibernian and Hearts have expressed interest in the 30-year-old but Andrews would have to accept a considerable salary cut to join either club.
Hibernian have emerged as favourites, with Hearts willing to offer only a one-year deal, but Tony Mowbray's budget for players is limited. With a year left on his deal, Rangers may require to offer Andrews compensation to cover his loss of earnings. The defender appeared in more than 50 games for Rangers in two years, thereby activating the extra one-year clause.
We can't afford Andrews, concede Hibs.
By: Ed Hodge.

It is "highly unlikely" Marvin Andrews will be moving from Rangers to Easter Road, Hibs manager Tony Mowbray said yesterday. The 30-year-old Trinidad & Tobago defender has been linked with a switch to the Leith club after being told he will not feature in the plans of new Ibrox manager Paul Le Guen.
Andrews still has a year left on his deal in Glasgow, but Rangers are willing to let him leave on a free transfer, activating the interest of a number of clubs north and south of the border.
The devout Christian, who has defied medical advice to play through knee ligament trouble as a result of his faith healing practices, is already thought to have turned down English offers such is his desire to stay in Scotland and be near his Fife church.
Hibs, who still need to strengthen at the back after the summer exits of Gary Caldwell and Gary Smith, would seem an attractive option for the powerful and fearless performer. But Mowbray last night insisted wage demands are likely to scupper any possible deal for the former Raith Rovers and Livingston centre-half.
He said: "Think it through, Marvin Andrews is a boy who played for the Old Firm. In fact, I shouldn't really comment as he's not our player and not anybody's player other than Rangers. But I know he is many multiples out of our wage structure so let's forget about it. The boy is not out of contract, he's under contract so I would say that [a deal] is highly unlikely to happen."

Football / Beenhakker admits defeat was fair
« on: June 20, 2006, 03:47:18 PM »
Trinidad and Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker said his players had not deserved victory over Paraguay in their final World Cup game.
The Caribbean outfit produced a spirited second-half display but still came away 2-0 losers to see them exit the tournament bottom of Group B.

And Beenhakker said: "Paraguay deserved their win as they took their chances.

"But this has been a great experience. In future maybe our players will show a bit more confidence."

Trinidad and Tobago surprised many in their first World Cup following a 0-0 draw with Sweden in their opener and after holding England for much of their second match.

"The players have shown they can play at this level," added Beenhakker.

"But the experience they have had in this competition can only help development even more and hopefully that will be seen in the results they get."
