Football / Best Dynamic Duos
« on: July 23, 2005, 10:33:36 PM »
Since we have a lull in international action..lets see how many dynamic duos we can come up with from the 90's onward...yes i know its irrelevant ::) ...but another "best' list ain't gonna hurt anybody lol.
I guess we can look at players who combine well or compliment each other even though they might be playing different positions.

My top 5 I can remember in no order is:
Raul & Morientes (Real Madrid & Spain)
Robbie Fowler & Micheal Owen (Liverpool)
Andy Cole & Dwight Yorke (Manchester United)
Romario & Bebeto (Brazil)
Sergei Rebrov & Andrei Shevchenko (Dynamo Kiev & Ukraine)

Work starts on Brian Lara cricket complex

First phase of $850m mega stadium

 BY VINODE MAMCHAN

Work on the $850 million Brian Lara stadium began yesterday with the clearing of the land at Tarouba, South Trinidad.

Four warm-up matches in the International Cricket Council’s 2007 Cricket World will be played on the new ground, described by the planners as a mega sporting facility.

Pakistan, South Africa, Canada and Ireland will be the teams playing the warm-up matches there.

The Brian Lara cricket facility was promised to the nation by Prime Minister Patrick Manning, after Brian Lara recaptured his world record, with a score of 400 not out in the Antigua Test against England last year.

The project has drawn a lot of adverse comment from citizens, who think that the money could be better spent by updating the exiting stadia and upgrading facilities throughout the country.

But the Government has said that the facility will be ultra-modern and will include scientific aids for greater sporting achievement. It will also cater for lawn tennis and basketball and will be a major tool in the fight to recapture the heart and soul of the nation’s youths, away from negative activity.

The project is under the management of Udecott and the cricket facility is earmarked for completion in time for the World Cup warm-up matches.

The Brian Lara cricket complex—the first phase of the mega stadium—will cost $273 million and will include state of the art practice facilities—as well as a top-class playing field.

TT will host India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Caribbean team Bermuda. The matches in this group will all be played at Queen’s Park Oval.

Chief executive officer of the Local Organising Committee, Anand Daniel, told G-Sport yesterday that he was confident that all would be well.

“After the official launch on Tuesday, work across the region has picked up pace and with 18 months to go, we are in a good position in T&T.

“I am confident that the Brian Lara cricket facility will be ready in time for the matches” he said.

40% of tickets for T&T fans

T&T cricket fans will have access to between 30 and 40 per cent of the tickets for World Cup matches at Queen’s Park Oval, said Anand Daniel,Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee.

“We have to remember that this is an international event and we have to abide by the rules that govern tickets when international matches are hosted in neutral countries.

“I have already met with the company ‘Cricket Logistics 2007’ , who are organising tours for fans and we are looking to reserve about 30 to 40 percent of the tickets for locals,” said Daniel.

I didn't realize they were still going ahead with this thing..especially after all the bad press it's been getting.

Vale's man makes mark

In a week of sporting surprises, Chris Birchall of Port Vale made football history, becoming the first white man to score a goal for Trinidad and Tobago. It happened in Miami on Wednesday in the Orange Bowl, in his country's opening Concacaf Gold Cup group game against Honduras.
After 27 minutes Birchall calmly put his side ahead with a shot into the roof of the net from outside the area.
Birchall's grandparents on his mother's side emigrated to Trinidad 50 years ago. When his mother returned to live in Britain, she met Birchall's father. Birchall moved with his parents to Stafford from Merseyside when he was a toddler.
'It was my most memorable goal to date,' said the 21-year-old after the 1-1 draw. 'The way it was set up [with a square pass from Dundee United's Jason Scotland] simply invited me to strike. They normally go over in training.' Trinidad play their second game against Panama, which was postponed yesterday because of Hurricane Dennis.

Birchall is clearly a scorer of notable goals. The one he got to start Vale's 5-0 rout of Barnsley last season, a glorious half-volley that followed a solo run from the halfway line, was voted the club's best goal of the campaign.

He scored eight in all from the right wing, which is not where Leo Beenhakker, Trinidad's esteemed Dutch coach, prefers to use him. 'I had never played central midfield before,' said Birchall, referring to his national role.

Birchall seems destined for a grander stage, not least an appearance at the World Cup finals next summer if Trinidad and Tobago maintain progress in their Concacaf group.

He will, though, remain faithful to Vale for the moment. 'When Vale offered me a two-year extension to my contract I signed straight away,' he said.

Can anybody confirm he is indeed the first 'white' goal scorer?

its 3-2 at halftime to jamaica. Its a kinda wild game, lots of naughtniness and crappy defending.
Dem 2 jamaican forwards Fuller and Shelton combining real well...they both quick and direct and not afraid to take on the defence. If only we boys could take a page out their book .

Football / Why not just a Soca Warriors Forum?
« on: June 28, 2005, 07:33:54 PM »
hey Tallman..wouldn't it be a good idea to have 2 seperate forums?..one for strictly posting Trinidad & Tobago football matters and then another for International discussions like talking bout transfers and analysing club games etc. That way someone wont have to read through posts concerning the Confederation Cup just to get to the Gold Cup posts that werent so recent in the day.
I know I could go to many different sites and do the same but I was hoping to chat with mostly Trinbagonians though.
As i said its just a thought..not sure how much work it is to be a moderator etc. 8)
