Manchester City: The science behind the champions

By Sam Sheringham
BBC Sport

Attached to one of the walls in an anonymous corridor of Manchester City's Carrington training ground is a shelving unit.

Resembling a set of pigeon holes at a hall of residence, it is divided into narrow slots, each carrying a laminated tag bearing the name of one of City's multi-millionaire players: Aguero, Hart, Toure, Balotelli and so on.

Within each slot are two vessels, one large and one small. The bigger one will be filled with the given player's personalised recovery drink - a concoction of proteins, carbohydrates and nutrients blended according to detailed analysis of their blood and saliva.

The smaller pot will be used for any dietary supplements, such as fish oils and multi-vitamins, which tests have revealed to be lacking in a player's diet.

City's embrace of sports science is not unique in a league where every club is searching for the slightest edge over their rivals, but the extent of their commitment exemplifies a determination to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of success.

It reflects an attention to the finest of details at a club that won Premier League by the finest of margins on that unforgettable afternoon in May.

The thing is the youths ent have nuttin to relate to locally, so they use the closest "cool" in ting.

If the Soca artisites sounding and copying the Jamaicans, doing dancehall tunes or chanting like them yuh cant expect the "sheep" to do nuttin different.

You cant blame them, who they go wanna emulate Machel?..."Heeehh Haaaa" Bungi with he "brrrrrrrrrrtttt" or Dancehall Swappi in he 4d.

The ent have no sportsmen who set a good example...if they ent retire, they pop down or they social life ent somthing to emulate.

But you see the social media and internet/tv/games facebook etc all now are the things that raise the youths today, not the church, family, the neighbourhood, the village or sporting group etc.

Which is why these setta illiterate radio broadcasters on these urban stations have so much power and sway.  It is painful to hear them speak, develop an argument, read the news or have their petty squabbles on air. But that is who educates the youth down here.

These radio men are who educate the youths today, plenty words and slangs that they make up or bring to the fore.

Dont fight it...smile and be thankful you grew up when you did and that you saw and experienced a better T&T.

Nursing Council defends exam
By

Story Created: Jul 4, 2012 at 11:58 PM ECT

Story Updated: Jul 4, 2012 at 11:58 PM ECT

The Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago (NCTT) yesterday defended the need for a Council-level licensing for graduating nurses.

In what has now become a public war-of-words between the two, Council members Russel Salcedo and David Murphy yesterday took Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan to task for his plans to amend the Nursing and Midwives Act without consultation.

The Council also denied having any previous discussions with Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan and dismissed his quotation of the 40 per cent failure rate for nurses sitting the Council licence exam.

"Unlike if I am at a factory and a tin goes bad I could dump it, we cannot afford to make mistakes and in order to ensure that we do not make mistakes, we must have some method of assessing the individuals competency and aptitude to be a nurse," Salcedo said.

"Any mistake that a nurse makes is either harm to a client or death and that is a critical factor," he added.

Salcedo said the Minister's quotation of the failure rate was also incorrect and instead said they have documents that show a fail-out rate of three to four per cent.

A fail-out rate is the nurses failure of all three chances to pass the Council's licensing exam within a five-year period.

"The Minister made reference to the percentages and some figures were quoted. In 2008, we had a pass rate of 66 per cent, in 2009 we had a pass rate of 89 per cent, in 2010 we had 62 per cent and in 2011 we had 64 per cent," he said.

He said while there were many institutions preparing nurses, they taught a different curriculum.

"The fail-out rate is three to four per cent and when we look at the number of nurses, there's quite a large number passing the system," he said.

"Nurses are being successful, but not being employed," he said.

He asked Khan to explain why there was a shortage, when nurses have passed the licensing exam a year ago and still remain unplaced in public hospitals.

He said that while locally trained and licensed nurses remain unplaced, nurses under a "Government to Government" exchange programme, like Cuba, St Kitts and Nevis, were placed immediately.

In response to those statements though, Khan said in a telephone interview he in fact did meet with the Council when he first assumed office.

Khan said the Council's licensing exam was done to ensure reciprocity of the nurses throughout the Commonwealth.

"For nurses to migrate, they have to have that licence," Khan said, adding that it was that reciprocity that added to the large amount of vacancies in the local health care system.

Khan though said he was not giving up the fight to have the five amendments passed as the "archaic" Council systems needed to change and "adapt to new technology".

He said in the absence of the licence, student nurses would still have to attend schools accredited by the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago.

"I am ready for the fight," Khan said.

Mystery fire guts $5m mansion
By Susan Mohammed susan.mohammed@trinidadexpress.com

Story Created: Jul 3, 2012 at 11:00 PM ECT

Story Updated: Jul 3, 2012 at 11:00 PM ECT

A MYSTERIOUS multi-million dollar fire yesterday destroyed the Carapichaima mansion of sanitation contractor Jawarhalal Deosaran.

The blaze was the fifth to break out at the house in four weeks. Police were told the fires began soon after an employee was fired.

The mansion at Southern Main Road, near St Mary's Junction, was estimated to be worth at least $5 million, and was 95 per cent destroyed, fire fighters said.

Deosaran, who owns Amalgamated Sanitation Company at El Socorro, was out of the country yesterday, seeking medical treatment.

One relative was at home at the time of the blaze, which was first spotted shortly after 9 a.m.

Other buildings on the compound were not affected.

The compound, which is secured by electronic gates, has a swimming pool, basketball court, warehouses, work sheds, and garages for industrial equipment, machinery and trucks.

Fire fighters said that at around 9.30 a.m they received a call that the house was on fire.

Relative Sherry Ann Sieunarine said that one person was at home when the fire started.

Freeport police said that from their investigations, the fire originated in a play room on the ground floor, and spread throughout the rest of the house.

Deosaran was expected to return yesterday, a relative said. He and his wife occupied the premises, the Express was told.

Deosaran is the son of Balraj Deosaran, a former People's National Movement MP, who founded the sanitation business.

Fire Divisional Officer Henry Campbell of the Chaguanas Fire Station told the Express, "The fire was playing cat and mouse with us. So when we thought we had it under control, it was still spreading."

Campbell said there was an adequate water supply but fire officers still used water from the swimming pool to help extinguish the blaze.

In past weeks, several reports were also made at the Freeport Police Station, that rooms in the mansion had ignited without apparent cause, and clothing and furniture had burned, following threats to the family from an ex-employee.

Police said a Hindu priest had previously visited the house and extinguished a fire using "holy water".

In July 2004, Deosaran's son, Rodney Deosaran was kidnapped and a $10-million ransom demand was made.

He was held captive for 42 days before his release.

Govt to remove nursing exam...as it tries to fill over 3,000 vacancies

By Renuka Singh

Story Updated: Jul 3, 2012 at 12:55 AM ECT

GOVERNMENT is moving to remove a practical testing element for nurses to qualify in a bid to fill over 3,000 vacancies in the health sector.

This from Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan yesterday who said the examination overseen by the Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago will no longer be necessary for nurses to begin practising at the nation's hospitals once the amendments to the Nursing and Midwives Act are passed in Parliament.

Speaking at a media conference at the Ministry of Health's head office on Park Street, Port of Spain, Khan said between 2009-2012 over 40 per cent of graduating nurses failed the licensing exam.
He said that nurses who fail the exam on three consecutive occasions are permanently disqualified from practising.

Khan said nursing graduates were already holding nursing certificate or Bachelor's degree from a training institution yet the present law mandated that they still sit an examination imposed by the Nursing Council in order to be become registered nurses and practise their profession.

"The removal of this examination will bring the registration and licensing of our nurses in line with other such noble professionals. Our nurses who are trained in Trinidad and Tobago will have automatic registration to practice within Trinidad and Tobago, and those who wish to practice abroad can sit any relevant registration exam to practice in that territory," he said.

"This among other factors has impacted negatively on the Ministry's manpower planning, as there continues to be a serious shortfall in nursing personnel. In order to address this problem and to ensure there is continuous improvement within the health sector, the Ministry is exploring various initiatives," he said.

Khan said while the Ministry has increased its training programmes and now enrolls 300 nursing students, there continues to be a "severe shortage of nurses within our local health system".

Khan said five amendments to the Nurses and Midwives Act, already approved by Cabinet, will also reduce the current size of the Nursing Council.

He said the Nurses and Midwives Act currently stipulates that the Nursing Council consists of 22 people, but he thought that was too large and suggested that it be reduced to 13 people comprising elected, non-elected members and lay people.

To further streamline the training processes, Khan said the Government recently agreed to move all nursing training programmes from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training.
A representative of the Nurses Council yesterday said the body will be sending out a media release today, but would not speak on the issue until then.

Valerie Alleyne-Rawlins, president of the T&T Registered Nurses Association yesterday said the licensing exam determined the graduates "fitness" to practice as a nurse. She said she was unaware of the amendments and would only comment when she got more information from the Ministry of Health.

Police are investigating reports of several mysterious fires at the home of a millionaire Central businessman.
Investigators said the fires began on June 14, after a female employee, a national of Guyana, was dismissed.

Another unexplained fire erupted on Tuesday, the businessman reported to the Freeport Police Station.
Police said the female employee made several threats against the family.

The police, fire service and a spiritual leader have been called in to assist the family, who live in a mansion, in Freeport.

The family estimates losses at $550,000.

The Express was told that several rooms in the family's mansion ignited, burning clothing and furniture.

A police officer witnessed one of the fires, as he interviewed the family on the weekend. The officer said the blaze broke out in a closet inside one of the bedrooms, destroying thousands of dollars in clothing. He described the fire as "strange".

Central Division fire-fighters were contacted on several occasions and assisted in extinguishing the fires.
Police said the family has connected a water hose to a pump in a pond at the back of the house to help in putting out the flames.

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) was also contacted and reported that electrical wiring was intact.

Police said a Hindu priest was summoned during one of the fires and put out the blaze with "sacred water".
Prayer services were also held at the house.

The family is seeking spiritual guidance, as they now fear for their lives. Central Division police are also investigating the cases.

33 appear in court for 'vice party'
By Joel Julien joel.julien@trinidadexpress.com

Story Created: Jun 18, 2012 at 10:51 PM ECT

Story Updated: Jun 18, 2012 at 10:51 PM ECT

THIRTY-THREE people yesterday appeared before a Tunapuna Magistrate charged with various levels of involvement in a "vice party" held over the Father's Day weekend.

Anthony Smith yesterday pleaded guilty to planning the "vice party" and was sentenced to three month's hard labour by Magistrate Gail Gonzales.

The Tunapuna First Magistrate's Court yesterday heard that Smith had organised a "vice party" and advertised the event using BlackBerry Messenger.

Hired "dancers" were outfitted in black and white uniforms and scattered throughout the party. The event was held in a rented house in El Dorado and tickets were sold for $200.

Around 4 a.m. officers of the Northern Division Task Force stormed the party and saw naked women "gyrating" on men.

Sgt Mark Maharaj led a team from the Northern Division Task Force, including constables Kevorne Joseph and Dexter Edwards to a house located on Sealey Street in El Dorado.

Sixteen females were charged with "lewd and suggestive dancing". Ten of the females, including two minors, pleaded guilty to the charges. Jamila Francis received the lowest fine after she told Gonzales she had two children to take care of and decided to dance at the party to make money.

Gonzales commended Francis for her honesty. Francis was fined $300 while the other nine women who pleaded guilty were all fined $400.

Jinai Johnson, who pleaded not guilty, said she went to the party with her husband while Nikeisha Rougier said she was a patron in the party and not one of the dancers.

Johnson, Rougier, Asha Anderson, Aleisha Job and Addie Williams pleaded not guilty and were placed on $5,000 bail.

Sparkle Smith, the wife of the planner of the "vice party", also pleaded not guilty and was granted $10,000 bail. They are to return to court on July 16. Seventeen men were charged with aiding and abetting in the "lewd and suggestive" dancing performed by the women.

Three of the men pleaded guilty, including Smith, the planner of the "vice party".

Smith's father, Trevor, also pleaded guilty and was fined $400. Jervon Lindsay was the only other person to enter a guilty plea. He too was fined $400.

The 14 other men pleaded not guilty including the disc jockey hired for the "vice party", Derwin Mc Erwin. All 14 men were placed on $10,000 bail. They are to return to court on July 16. Smith was also charged with selling alcohol without a liquor licence.

Four cases of beer, two bottles of Black and White scotch, a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black scotch, a bottle of Hennessy and a bottle of Absolut Vodka were yesterday presented to the court as evidence.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was granted $10,000 bail.

Forumites,

I ent sure which thread to put this in...but I find it funny how Ian didn't do his own investigation into this thing that was happening.

Oh this newspaper source is very accurate. You cannot get it hot off the press like them.

http://www.tntmirror.com/2012/05/25/nabbed-reporter-claimed-to-be-working-undercover

An Express crime reporter who is under investigation for the alleged robbery of more than $300,000 (TT and US currency) from an Arouca Liquor Mart owner told investigators that he is the co-producer of Ian Alleyne’s Crime Watch programme.

He claimed to be working undercover to gather information on crimes for the programme.

He also allegedly confessed to investigators that among their victims were certain drug dealers, who were targeted because the raids would not be reported to the police.

Police reportedly found a list of names and addresses of prominent businessmen who are suspected to be involved in the illegal drug trade.

The journalist, who claimed to be a law student, is also being interrogated in connection with similar robberies in which bandits posing as police officers held up businesspeople and robbed them.

He is expected to undergo several identification parades along with a cameraman and a security guard both employed with CCN TV 6 (Caribbean Communications Network).

Police say the cameraman also works with the Crime Watch programme.

One of the guns which were allegedly seized was traced to former Commissioner of Police Kenny Mohammed. Police found two pistols and six rounds of ammunition and the cash was recovered from the TV 6 vehicle.

In January this year thieves broke into the La Florissante, Arima home of Mohammed and stole among other items a safe containing his licensed firearm and 23 rounds of ammunition.

Mohammed, 70, had kept the firearm in the small safe in a locked cabinet at his home. The former CoP was at the time hospitalised after suffering a stroke.

On Sunday evening acting on a tip off police went to K and L Liquor Mart at Range Road, Five Rivers where they confronted three men as they were leaving the business place.

The men entered the business place, pretending to be police officers and were in possession of a search warrant, which turned out to be a bogus document.

When police arrived in a bid to make their escape, one of the bandits opened fire on the police, and during the shoot out he was wounded on the foot.

The men who were all wearing bullet-proof vests surrendered to the officers.

The cameraman, who was seated in the CCN vehicle outside the liquor store, was also arrested.

The vehicle was reportedly outfitted with flashing blue strobe lights on the dash board, which is used by the protective services.

Reports are that the well-known journalist told the police he was living in Cumuto but they later discovered he was staying at an apartment in Curepe.

A search of the house turned up several ski masks, uniforms from various security companies and a quantity of ammunition.

They are expected to appear before a magistrate in the Arima court on Thursday to face several charges including possession of a firearm and ammunition, robbery, impersonating a police officer, uttering a false document and shooting with intent.

This is the second cameraman attached to the Crime Watch programme, who was held for being involved in criminal activities.

In September last year WIN TV cameraman Russell Basdeo was allegedly held with 1.96 kilos of marijuana with an estimated value of $20,000 for the purpose of trafficking.

He was held by police officers from the Northern Division while driving along the Uriah Butler Highway.

Basdeo was once worked with Ian Alleyne on his Crime Watch programme, while at WINTV. He is currently out on $75,000 bail.

Hear d real scene...

Let the gays Marry legally...go into the district office/court house/vegas wherever and get the paperwork done. Allow them same rights legally and let them be happy.

But if they want to go to a church/mosque or other religious institution it is up to the priest/rabbi/pastor/imam/pundit etc...to do it and give his blessing.

If the "Holy Authority" don't do it and you can't have your ceremony ...say ok and press and go to a "denomination" that will welcome you with open arms and accept your same sex union as marriage.

That is the simplest and easiest way for everybody to be happy.

But what go happen is...the rejected gay couple go turn around "pun intended" and sue the damn church for discrimination.

There is no winner here...somebody have to dig a horrors and feel the hurt...but it ent sunshine and rainbow time just yet. Even though they looking at the forecast and the weatherman saying good weather on the horizon.

Why expose children to this? I mean when you small you ent studying Ernie and Bert and the smurfs and the rest of them, if they boysing or not.
