Football / Re: Goal III: Taking on the world
« on: June 21, 2009, 06:02:20 AM »
I saw this movie on DVD. TOTAL BULLOCKS. Goal I and II were good flicks, this was real crap. A very big disappointment. Don't want to spoil it for anyone but there is a reason it went straight to DVD. They seemed to radically deviate from the original plot.

the first 2 were straight to dvd also werent they? i havent seen a single advertisement for Goal 1 and 2 for theaters at all.

Nah the first one was in theatres.  I dunno about the 2nd.

Goal 3 is utter garbage.  Unlike the first two, instead of having real footballers acting in the same scenes as the actors, they used footage of actual games on a green screen and had the actors runnin around pretending to be in a game.
There were no scenes with the actors and real players together off the pitch either.
I guess they had a smaller budget than for the first two.

Could be that all the WC footage cost a pretty penny and eat up de budget.
De close ups of the actors superimposed on the field of play look kinda lame in de preview. Dream Team looks like it does a better job blending players into real games

How is it that we who have most of the team playing abroad struggling to beat Bermuda and Grenada.

Simple, because we do not have top players, with top teams, in the top leagues.

I think this is a bigger question than its been given credit for. It is a valid question.

Even though we have quite a few players playing abroad in admittedly stronger leagues, we aren't dominating the likes of Greneda. Might it be due in large part to lack of chemistry? Does the Grenedian team have equally tallented players (albeit without the exposure to foreign experience), who play together regularly enough to forge a potent enough team to rival T&T's superior experienced individuals?  What about T&T's team selection? Coaching staff not on the same page or being dictated to by the likes of Jack?

Good question, I think this should disturb the powers that be. All credit to Greneda, though.

I think the observation was that Spain may be benefitting from players in foreign leagues (EPL in this case). So you should be asking....does T&T benefit from having foreign-based players, regardless of whether we struggled against Grenada and the like. And one offs are not useful to talk about anyway...we are in the Hex, Grenada is not. T&T generally plays at a higher level than Grenada. Also, it is only one issue. Spain had all the other ingredients in place..great domestic league, deep pool of top quality players, good coaching staff..etc. This talk about foreign based is one additional layer on top of many..T&T have so many problems that you cannot discuss the inadequencies of the side only in terms of foreign based vs local. With Spain, however, you might be able to say that was the last piece of the puzzle

I was wondering the same thing today. I believe that having players in the EPL helps the Spanish national team. By mixing players who are playing in the two of the best leagues in Europe you increase the chances of having a complete, versatile squad. You also have a squad of players who are getting more top level European experience. By having players in Barca, Liverpool and Arsenal, for example, you are improving the chances of your players reaching the semifinals and finals of the Champions League every years as opposed to if all your players were in La Liga. I looked at the Spanish team today and at one point you had Pepe Reina, Arbeloa, Fernando Torres, Fabregas, Riera and Xavi Alonzo on the field. It may not have been Spain's A-squad, but it was close and in any case, these are all key players..all of whom ply their trade in England. You have your typically talented technicians who can now play at a slighty faster pace, who aren't as put off by the long ball, or physical play. I think having players in a variety of the best leagues helps, even if Italy in WC2006 shows it isn't absolutely necessary. Also helps when there are groups of players who know each other well. Spain today could have basically been called Barcerpool United.

Other thoughts:

David Villa > Fernando Torres

I've never seen a player improve over a year like Gerrard Pique.

I think Pienaar will have a breakout tournament in 2010...but not sure where the goals coming from if Benny doh come back into the fold.

yeah RF....that question was asked earlier and we came to a consensus that we were talking about population size. when you joined the thread, you should have realized that's what E-man was talking about instead of trying to lambast people for not knowing the facts, or not reading carefully. as it turns out, you did neither and are making yourself to sound like an idiot. case in point:

So because a bunch of Trinis say its "population" size that determines how small a country is, it should be the end all and be all?

Listen, the international media + FIFA harped on the fact all throughout France '98...Its not something that I made up.
I recall even Jack Warner mentioning the fact when they presented Jamaica with the "Best Mover" award after they qualified for France.

Yes, Jamaica was the smallest country to play in the world cup before T&T came along. And thats a FACTUAL statement.

It doesnt take anything away from your achievements, so dont understand the lengths at which peeps re going to prove a silly point. Jamaiuca has a bigger legacy to look back at, 3 goals scored and a win. We had one player scoring a brace in a single game. Many before (and after  ;D) has tried and failed to even score at the finals, much less win a game.

And for the last time, Kuwaite is geographically larger than the island of Jamaica. not only that, They have a larger population. Jamaica population in the 1990's was around 2.3 million people.

RF...Jamaica was NEVER the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup. All discussions about size referred to population size and all that was ever said about JA was that it was the first caribbean nation to qualify for the WC. Later on, broadcasters realized this was in error and they changed it to JA being the first english-speaking caribbean nation to qualify. You will never find any non-Jamaican TV broadcast or legit publication where JA is mentioned as the smallest nation to qualify. I am no JA-hater..just providing you with facts. If they are indeed the smallest by land mass to qualify, then excellent. Now learn to read and go back to E-man's link where FOR THE RECORD, Kuwait's population was smaller than JA's when Kuwait qualified for the WC and when JA qualified. And if you join a thread where we determine we are talking about population size, then it is stupid to accuse people of guessing and not knowing the facts. Only person "guessing" was you

Learn the facts before you try to "guess" the truth.

Jamaica was the smallest country to ever play in a world cup finals, this is not a claim made by me, but one that the international media carried all throughout the world cup finals in France '98.

For the record, the Island of Jamaica covers 4,244 square miles, which makes it geographically smaller than Kuwait. Its also smaller than Kuwaite in terms of population.

Exactly who is "guessing"?

I believe T&T also replaced Ja as the smallest country to have qualified. There went our legacy :)

You're wrong.  I can think of at least one smaller country that qualified before.

According to http://www.indexmundi.com/kuwait/population.html

in 82 when Kuwait qualified the pop was 1.5 million
in 98 it was 2.3 million

http://www.indexmundi.com/jamaica/population.html

in 98 was 2.6 million

E-man..them numbers a lil too big for RF. Is there any way you can confirm that 2.6 million is indeed a larger number than 2.3 million or 1.5 million?

Brazil demonstrated that they're in a different class to the U.S. - no newsflash there.

I'm not sure if Bob Bradley is the man to take the U.S. to the next level- they are struggling relative to their own standards- I think Arena had these guys playing a much smoother, dangerous brand of football.  Under Bradley, especially of late, they have not looked as fluid as they usually do against the CONCACAF opposition, and in both these games so far in the Confed Cup, they were second best by a mile (Granted they've played against two of the best in the World).  They showed good discipline and fight against the Italians and got some sympathy for the red card, but it overshadowed the fact that they were a notch below where they want to be even before the red card unbalanced the game.  Today again they got a harsh red, but they were already down 2-0 when it happened and Brazil was strolling over them...On previous occasions, I've touted the U.S. Nat'l team to be a program perched not too far below the elite...and they've def shown that potential in recent years past but of late they seem to be slipping.

I think the U.S. program is one of a long-term vision, and I think they have a professional and patient approach with the people they put in charge- but I wouldn't be totally shocked if Bob Bradley loses his job before WC 2010.

Too many uninspired laborers on that US team while the few true talents like Torres and Adu rotting on the bench. Imagine, a pure hound like Hejduk have to get injured before Spector get a run. Bradley does not have a clue. He will get fired if dey toots down the Gold Cup...even before that, the Klinnsman rumors will start.

Palos, the man might be very correct in assuming that most "South Africans" won't be able to afford tickets to the World Cup.  One can only assume he talkin' about the "Black" South Africans, too, because, as far as the images being fed from this tournament, is only BLACK people you're seeing in the stands with their painted faces and animated celebrations with their "vuvuzelas" and I can appreciate his point, but you know what?  For all the success that the usa enjoys in concacaf, the american people and people like zeppo and them could NEVER appreciate and enjoy hosting a World Cup or having their country be represented in a World Cup, Whether they buying box seats or if they watching it at home on their big-screen LCD, like thes South African people can, whether THEY are scrounging a few rands to get a corner flag seat or if they all huddled around the lone black and white CRT in the village.  these people were put off from hosting a World Cup in favor of Germany, maybe for good reason, but this world Cup and their team means more to them than zeppo or any other american can appreciate, no matter if the usa hosts the next THREE World cups.  The nuance of this sport and all that comes with it are lost on people like him which is why he can come on this forum and try to drop his snide cynicism.  Let him keep talkin' his shit.  The usa is a country that always wants to be, HAVE TO BE number one at EVERYTHING they do.  It grinds the HELL outta them that, for all their might and money, they still can't get this "soccer" thing yet and that whenever they come up against the great teams they are attempting to be considered among, they always just end up looking like schoolboys.

KJ need to play with a striker and a coach he can learn from.
He has not improved since he moved to Sunderland.

Oh yeh, fork England.

Not true at all.  He looked very good under Keane in the first year and showed some promise when he returned from injury. Sbragia helped him regress to some extent once he took over.

He looked even better for Southampton.

I doh think so especially considering the tougher competion in the Prem, but we don't all see the same things.

Filho the Owen point is not a true representation of my personal feelings.  It is an exagerated look at numbers which is what is often done when critiquing KJ.  Nowhere in most criticisms is there any mention of the type of competition he faces, the fact that he's often double teamed and of course the lack of quality service.  Believe me we share similar perspectives somewhat.

yeah..i realize where you coming from.

Dred at real madrid Owen had 18 starts, 13 goals
Daz ridiculous stats

OK I'll conceed that but he had some 30+ appearances (starts included)  so in the end the numbers will say he flopped.  Men basing KJs quality on numbers no?

Jai KJ does work harder than any forward that wears the RWB and if anyone say no they either don't really watch the games or fooling themselves.  He is the only ST that runs after defenses.  Stern doesn't, Scotty doesn't, Glen doesn't and the others haven't been seen enough to know if they will consistently chase after defenders trying to knock the ball around in their half.  Heskey is a workhorse I will admit which is why I like him as a player but I think KJ has it in him.  Remember Heskey works hard as does Rooney so the comparison when you factor in who KJ is partnered with will always be in favor of Heskey/ Rooney.

Filho the overall numbers will show that based on total appearances he did not measure up to his Liverpool stats.  It's purely numbers and not subjective so unless you want to change the numbers apps v starts is absolutely irrelivant.  The numbers are there for all to see.  We constantly measure KJ by the lack of production in our team and sometimes even for Sunderland but when you use just numbers only you'll find that our argument about his quality is grossly exagerated and out of context (similar to the Owen comparison)

no worries killa. we just disagree on Owen and we looking at the stats differently. for me, 13 goals in 18 starts is a more fair measure than total appearances. it is a better proxy for goals per minute on the field...which i find statistically more relevant than goals per appearance..especially since many appreances were as a sub at the end of a game. you can argue that if he'd been better, he should have started more games. but having watched the season unfold, it was pretty clear Raul was getting the benefit of the doubt as the senior player. you'd be hardpressed to find a RM fan who say Owen flopped or 'sucked' as you said, even if you just look at the stats. 13 goals is 34 total appearances is still very good output. he was in the top 10 goalscorers in La Liga and it's even better considering that RM had Ronaldo that season with 21 goals. It is very rare and a superb achievement for a team's 2nd striker to hit double figures. anyhow..his goals per total appearances at RM is still comparable to that at Liverpool (lower, but still comparable)...definitely not enough to say he 'sucked'.

like I said we just disagree. to be honest..I don't see how anyone would agree that those stats suck. as for KJ...look at my post and you'd see where i coming from. not one to bash de man for his stats..which improved over this season. I'm also not one to just look at stats in and of themselves. respect  :beermug:

Horse doh diss Owen in Madrid dred.
The man was actually killing it in Madrid.
Iz that run in Madrid that really made me respect the man.
Class player when fit

All that sound good but he didn't score enough goals given total appearances compared to back at Liverpool.  Everyone seems to evaluate KJs worth as a striker by goals so if that's the measuring stick at the end of the day all the players I listed flopped!  If we measuring by skill then I can bring a whole other list of players regarded as far more skilfull that didn't score nearly enough to justify the argument as well.

At RM, Owen started 18 league games..usually when Ronaldo was injured....and he scored 13 league goals. And he played well too. That is superb stats. He scored 16 goals in 29 starts the previous season at Liverpool and 19 goals in 32 starts the season before that at Liverpool. So not sure where you coming from using goalscoring stats. Statistically speaking he was also better than his previous 2 season at Liverpool...so I really doh think you remembering correctly. If it wasn't for politics and Raul being an automatic starter, he would have gotten more playing time and Owen would have probably stayed at RM longer. Breds..nobody who seriously watch RM that season will tell you Owen was not a boss. Even the Spanish loved him there and because of Owen, the first real talks about Raul not being good enough to start at RM began. Even Marca was asking why the Englishman doh start more cuz he was deadly when he got the chance. Dat is why Owen ride after one seaon..politics was killing de man.

the funny thing is I honestly don't remember KJ scoring all dat many headers last season. I saw a lot of scrap goals and a few 'striker's' finishes in and around the 6 yard box. but i just going off memory. two seasons ago he seemed to use his head alot more.

In my opinion USA played with alot of heart and character yesterday. They went down a man with the sending off of Clark and rightfully so but they stuck in there and thats what good teams do. In the end they ran out of stream but credit to Italy, they played decent. Technically we witness how well organized USA team is and although they deserved to be in the Confeds, I would of rather seen Costa Rica or TNT in there instead.

Lucky Italians this time, well taken penalty Dono! Rossi the backstabber, we feed this kid and he come back to bite we in the @ss

While yuh talk some sense here there are many very good and even great (or once viewed as such) strikers/ goal scorers that have went to other leagues/ clubs/ systems and flopped horribly so the idea that a great striker will prosper in any system isn't always accurate.  One easy example of this would be Schevchenko who was unstopable at Milan but a total waste for Chelsea.  Henry sucked at Juventus, Queresma (more of a winger but still qualifies) who was better than and projected to be what Ronaldo has become has flopped everywhere outside Portugal, Anelka flopped at Madrid & Liverpool, After Barcalona Kluivert flop everywhere else, Owen (who is very good when not injured) sucked at Madrid, Bergkamp sucked at Inter, Berbatov wasn't anything special while on the field at ManUre, Crespo wasn't as good at Chelsea and worse at Milan, and we can go on and on.  So to say that KJ can't just fit any system and thus isn't a good striker is rubbish.

i know the point yuh making, but Owen was real deadly at Madrid. He get salt cuz they refuse to bench Raul and no way he was starting in front de fat man, but Owen was a killer in Madrid. His goals to games ratio was something else. Crespo was good at Milan too. Especially in the Champion's League. His double in the final deserved a winner's medal, plus he knock out ManU in the semis (i think). just an aside

I think KJ's recent poor run for the national team is a combination of fatigue, poor form and injury. But he is a very good player albeit with some things to work on. i've seen him live when he is on form and confident and his touch is good, his movement is good and he is a fighter. the guy who got his knee wrecked by David James is who I talking about.

KJ needs a good break..physically and mentally. You'll be surprised how much that will do for him. Poor fella..I think he means so much for his teams..Sunderland and T&T that they take risks on him and dat youth must be does take some serious physical abuse..now he getting de fan abuse. truth is..we should be asking Latas, Maturana, Sbragia etc..why dey trying to squeeze de last pieces out of a physically and mentally broken striker. We doh have anything better at the moement in their estimation. Dread KJ was limping aftre 10 minutes against Mexico and bandage up tight. But I never hear KJ complain, whine, or anything. Seems like a top class pro.

It take Carlos almost 2 years to look like more than an Intercol player in the EPL after his injuries. KJ came back after a long injury layoff and did very well. 10 goals in 29 EPL games is fantastic after surgery. Improvement from last year in many ways..but some parts of his game were stunted as Sunderland was in a relegation dog fight from earlies..so I feel KJ didn't learn more of the finer arts of his trade. It was a case of go in there and be a physical presence and get your head to the ball. Dat is my guess.

De youth eh lazy..but he gone through for the season. He might have a little attitude now too..cuz that business hard dread. Even de faqns who say they love does mash you up. I feel plenty of them fellas does develop a thick skin to protect themselves..not to be arseholes just cuz they feel they reach.

We'll see how we boy look once he get a little rest. T&T needs him at his best. But we can't get the best out of him now..Lewwe not pretend this is the best and only way we ever see KJ play. He's shown great potential and the best is yet to come. In the meantime, we need to have faith in the viable alternatives when men like KJ fall off. Competition for places will make them all better

well you mentioned our team, so is you who introduce the idea of cause and effect, and so I am just doing the same. If you only wanted to say the man was shite, pure and simple, there is no need to mention T&T. But you saying he is shite but look good against our defense. no? If his looking good has something to do with our defense, it stands to reason his looking shite may have something to do with Italy. That was all I was saying. In any case, de youth have good technique..maybe it was a bad game. Maybe his form fall off. Maybe he eh ready for that level of ball..but I wouldn't judge him off one game.

Egypt lodge protest over alleged "video evidence"
Soccernet.com

Brazilian coach Dunga dismissed the matter as "Egypt's problem, not ours".

What stupid statement to make. His arse is on the line but to say this is absolutely senseless. It is a problem of the footballing world.

Nope. He's absolutely right. The right call was made and Brazil should not care, just like Egypt would not give a dam if it went the other way. It's not like the ref made a decision that cheated Egypt out of a rightful draw. Egypt tried to cheat..yuh eh see how the defender drop like he get shot. I for one am glad..not because I am openly a Brazil fan, but because when people cheat they should get caught. FIFA has decisions to make regarding video evidence and what to do about refs who break their rules, but that is FIFA and Egypt's problem. Brazil should be happy and relieved to get the right call. If T&T played the US and we should have won a game cuz the US cheated and the ref missed it...I'd be more than happy if the 4th official came to the rescue and we won the game on a call that we shoud rightfully have. It opens questions, but that is an off the field matter now. The right decision was made.

I remember them failing to get out of the first round 2 editions ago and I also remember Mexico mannersing them 4 years ago in the opener. But by the end of the last tournament dey was humbling Germany and hitting Argentina for 4. We'll see if this team could build momentum like that..or if they eh able. This will be a good tournament. The Brazil, USA, Italy, Egypt group is going to be serious. Don't watch the US slight either...every game in this group will be tough. Still hoping for Brazil and Egypt to go through

To be honest..everyone really only praises Birchie for 2 things..his workrate and his shooting. But your statement about passing is untrue. Birchie is the only mf in the squad I see who successfully makes good driven cross field passes. Gives an added range to our mf passing.

89
Nah Filho,  it was Birchall to Latapy in the middle of the field who made a typical Latapy pick-out-de-player-perfectly-pass to Carlos on the wing....he (Latapy) continued to run into the box along with Carlos.

Carlos then lifted the ball over the heads of about four US players to find Latapy who in turn found de net....
sweet, sweet, sweet from start to finish... :beermug:

true dat..I though you were saying it was Birchie to Latas and then goal. I was just saying I remember Carlos was involved in de play as well. Now I reread you post I realize you were just calling it up to the end of Birchie's involvement in the play...
