HOMELESS AFTER GLASGOW
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH

TWO-TIME Trinidad and Tobago 110 metre hurdles Olympian Mikel Thomas, has been kicked out of his Florida apartment and forced to abruptly end his 2014 competitive season due to the unavailability of Elite Athlete Assistance Programme (EAAP) funds from the Ministry of Sport.

Ironically, Thomas received an email with the eviction notice from his landlord approximately three weeks ago, while en route to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Sadly, this has been the case for Thomas since the start of 2014. Speaking to the athlete from his family’s home in New York yesterday, where he has been forced to take up temporary residence, after returning from national duty last week, Thomas revealed he has not received funds from the EAAP since May 2013. The EAAP was designed to help TT athletes prepare for major international meets by defraying costs for supplements, training, accommodation etc.

On June 7, Newsday published a story highlighting Thomas’ call for public assistance via a fund- raising website so as to attend the National Track and Field Championships in June. His plea carried the theme - “Help Keep the Dream Alive” - and was made on www.gofunddme.com. The 2013 national champion was able to muster funds and returned to TT to compete and bagged silver in his pet event. To date however, nothing has changed and the former national 110m hurdle champion is contemplating ending his professional career.

“My situation has not improved in any way and I have been forced out my apartment. I can’t make preparations for next season because of a lack of support and the amount of debt I am now in because of it,” an upset Thomas told Newsday.

“I did not have money and was unable to renew my lease. My rent was US$450 per month. I am at a point where even if I get a job now, it (the money) wouldn’t be enough. The time and commitment of being an elite athlete, makes it hard to continue. I have received no notification from the Ministry of Sport as to when funds will be available. I am in my physical prime yet because of no support from my country, I am at the point where I am considering leaving athletics,” Thomas said.

The 26-year old, who holds the national 110m record of 13.19 seconds, said he still desires to continue to train, compete and represent the red, white and black. But without financial assistance, this is near impossible, at least at an elite level. Thomas has even given up his car to cut his expenses and is using a bicycle as his main mode of transportation. He has not received elite funding since May of 2013.

Thomas said he is not the only TT athlete having problems with accessing Elite funding. He said other athletes while receiving funds, have not been given the full amount. The excuse for this, when athletes visited the Sport Ministry, was a miscalculation by someone.

Thomas last contacted the Sport Ministry in June and was told, “funds are unavailable.” No explanation was forthcoming as to why there was no funding available.

The 2009 University of Kentucky graduate, who prior to his eviction, used to be a volunteer coach at the University of Florida, continued, “I’ve run out of options. My only option now is to work and fend for myself. It’s disappointing. There’s an expectation to perform but no help in the process or development. I’ve shown how productive I can be with aid yet I can’t get an email (from Ministry of Sport) or call returned.

“I’ve followed procedures and done my part and all I ask is for the same nation I so proudly represent, to do theirs. Can you imagine how it felt to be kicked out your apartment while you’re at a tournament representing your country? It is a national duty and honor (to represent TT), yet I no longer have a place to call home. Is that right?”

At the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, Thomas placed fourth in his heat and thus did not advance to the semi-final stage of the 110m hurdles. He believes the email from his landlord stating he was evicted, had a negative impact on his mind set going into the race.

“I don’t think I was able to have the same mentality this year. It was a struggle each race and the pressure to have to run to make some money to eat...it took away from the joy of the sport and where you need to be. It became a weight and a cloud.

“Commonwealth was a bad race but we prepare to where our worst is better than the rest, or good enough to see another day. I wasn’t able to prepare that way this year,” said an unhappy Thomas.

Up to late yesterday evening, Thomas revealed that he is still trying to hold firm, despite his world crumbling down.

“I’m not asking for any big money nor am I trying to make the ministry or government look bad. But for those who can make a difference, please do. I bleed this, I pour out all I have for my country but how can you expect a man to compete with the best, if he can’t even eat or have a place to stay? We are ambassadors for our country. I’ve gone places where I met people who never even heard of Trinidad and Tobago. All I am asking is for the same people who I represent as an athlete, to support me and my efforts,” Thomas said.

Football / Houston Camp Delayed

Houston camp delay.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

PASSPORT problems, visa, ticket and funding issues have temporarily stalled the departure of the Trinidad and Tobago national women’s football team to Houston, Texas,  for a  one-month training camp.

The Soca Princesses were due to leave this week. However, yesterday, Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) general secretary Sheldon Phillips confirmed that the team is still here. “They were supposed to go out this week. It’s nothing nefarious,” Phillips declared. “It (was) just getting the travel plans organised and the funding settled.”

“I should find out by today or tomorrow what is the departure date for them,” Phillips added. “I think one or two players have to get their passport and their visa, but that is not the crux of the matter. I think its just about getting the tickets and so.”

The Soca Princesses will use the camps as preparations for the inaugural Women’s Caribbean Cup which they host from August 19-29 and which also serves as the opening round of qualifying for the Canada 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

While in Houston, newly-installed national coach, American coach Randy Waldrum, and first assistant Marlon Charles will be in charge. And while in Houston,  Trinidad and Tobago  will play two internationals against the Mexican women’s national team.

“Those matches will not be affected,” indicated Phillips. “We know exactly when they will be played but some dates have been blacked out.”

Gilbert Arenas arrested with truck full of illegal fireworks in Los Angeles (Video)

Gilbert Arenas was pulled over, handcuffed and placed under arrest early Thursday morning in Los Angeles, with police reportedly booking the former NBA All-Star for speeding without a license in a pickup truck full of illegal fireworks. (That's an amalgamation of the three things the ex-Washington Wizards guard was reportedly doing, not the official charge ... although it would be pretty amazing if that was a specific law you could break.)
News of Arenas' run-in with the law, and the video proof up above, come from the all-seeing eyes of TMZ, which reported that the California Highway Patrol stopped Arenas, 31, for speeding at around 2:30 a.m. PT on Thursday morning and found many, many boxes of what you'd presume were intended to be Fourth of July-earmarked fireworks in plain sight in Agent Zero's Ford truck. (Apparently, Gil was also operating without a license.)

Jamaican track star Veronica Campbell-Brown has been tested positive for a banned substance.

Campbell-Brown was tested positive at the Jamaica Invitational Meet on May 4.

Campbell-Brown's A sample revealed the presence of a diuretic, which acts as a masking agent and is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Diuretics are used to cause the excess release fluids from the body primarily through urination, as a result, decreasing the ability to detect performance enhancement drugs.

She travelled to Montreal, Canada with her management team on Thursday ahead of the B sample results, which Friday confirmed the positive finding.

One of the most memorable NBA point guards of the '90s is now fighting for his life. As reported by Alexis Steves of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, retired 13-year veteran Mookie Blaylock is on life support following a car accident in Georgia on Friday afternoon:
Former NBA star and Hawks player Mookie Blaylock was one of two people critically injured Friday afternoon in a head-on collision in Clayton County, according to police.
Blaylock, 46, was driving a Cadillac Escalade northbound on Tara Boulevard when for unknown reasons, he crossed over the median and into a southbound lane, Jonesboro police Chief Franklin Allen told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Blaylock’s vehicle struck another vehicle head-on, injuring two people, whose names were not released, and himself, Franklin said.
All three were transported to Atlanta Medical Center, where Blaylock was flown and was on life support and unresponsive, Franklin said. A female passenger in the second vehicle was bleeding internally, he said.

Hackett's LSU forfeit title over drug test

By Kern De Freitas kern.defreitas@trinidadexpress.com

A cloud is again hanging over Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Semoy Hackett after her school, Louisiana State University (LSU) had to vacate their 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship title due to the sprinter's positive drug test.

LSU reported on their website on Friday that the team have forfeited their title, because NCAA rules state that "any team that competes with an ineligible athlete is required to forfeit participation in the championship of its respective sport".

The substance, the stimulant Methylhexaneamine that is commonly found in over-the-counter nutritional supplements, is the same one that saw her banned for six months from September 16 last year to March 19 2012 after a positive test at last year's National Track and Field Championships on August 13.

"I've been informed I tested positive for a banned stimulant at the NCAA Championships last year, which has resulted in the LSU team vacating the NCAA Championship," Hackett was quoted as saying by the LSU website. "I want to express my apologies to my coaches, my teammates, LSU and our fans. Although this was unintentional, I'm deeply sorry this will have such a negative impact on my team and LSU."

Asked yesterday about the matter, National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) president, Ephraim Serrette told the Sunday Express that the Association is still trying to clarify the details surrounding Hackett's positive test.

"We just emailed the school," Serrette stated. "We have no information as yet (to go on)."

Serrette said the NAAA will issue a statement once they have full details on the matter.

The issue left LSU's head track and field coach, Dennis Shaver "disappointed".

"It's unfortunate the team will be required to vacate the NCAA Championship due to the actions of one individual, but we will certainly comply with the NCAA's instructions in this matter," Shaver said. "We support the policies that the NCAA has set to promote fair competition.

"This is disappointing news for the LSU Track and Field programme, but our hard work and pursuit of excellence will continue on and off the track."

Emmanuel Steward - Boxing Great Emmanuel Steward Dead At 68

Boxing legend Emmanuel Steward has died, aged 68.

The sports icon was recovering after undergoing recent surgery to fix a stomach condition when he passed away on Thursday (25Oct12).

Reports suggest he was also battling colon cancer.

The revered trainer and commentator helped Thomas Hearns and Jimmy Paul land world championships in the 1980s, and in recent years he had worked with world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and middleweight sensation Andy Lee.

He was also a beloved fight commentator and a former bantamweight champion in the early 1960s. Steward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997.

Paying tribute to his late trainer, Klitschko says, "Boxing has suffered a tremendous loss... (Brother) Vitali and I, along with the entire Team Klitschko, send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Emanuel's family and friends. It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend. Well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade. I will miss our time together."

Football / Lawrence signs new contract with Wigan
« on: July 13, 2012, 11:13:01 PM »
Lawrence signs new contract with Wigan.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Former T&T defender Dennis Lawrence has secured a new contract that will see him stay with the Wigan Athletic Premiership club’s coaching staff for the 2012/2013 English Premiership season.

Lawrence accepted the offer recently in time for the club’s preseason which will see him remain as an assistant to Roberto Martinez. Mike Berry, Lawrence’s UK-based handler, revealed that the former Swansea City man will also complete his UEFA ‘A’ License later this month.

“Dennis has now signed a new and improved contract taking him into a third year of coaching at the highest level in England,” Berry said.

“He completes his UEFA A Licence this month and as a fully qualified coach will continue to work alongside Roberto Martinez who is one of the most progressive and exciting coaches in the game.

Roberto has told me that he rates Dennis very highly and includes him in all aspects of coaching and tactics at Wigan FC and sees him as an integral part of the Technical staff,” Berry added.

Lawrence himself was quietly pleased to have secured an extension to his stay. He is now the only Trinidadian and possibly from the Caribbean to head into a third season as a full member of a Premiership club’s first team coaching staff.

“The Second season was very exciting and it gave me the chance to grow more into the coaching side of football and to be able to see Wigan develop under the guidance of Roberto as he is very detailed and confident in what the goals and aspirations are for the club,” Lawrence shared.

Working under Martinez, who was used by ESPN as an expert analyst during the recent 2012 Euro Finals, has been a major factor behind Lawrence’s success as a coach. “It’s been a really fantastic experience for me to be working under a really good manager who encourages me and allows me to express myself in my role at the club,” the former Wrexham and Defence Force standout added.

“I’ve been allowed to carry out by duties on a day to day basis and grow with the entire experience. Working in one of, if not the best League in the world with top footballers is something money cannot buy and I’m grateful for this opportunity and everything that led to it from my time as a player representing T&T, playing in a World Cup and my various experiences at the clubs I’ve spent time with,” he said.

Martinez meantime became one of the more talked about managers in the Premiership at the end of last season. And he credits his backroom staff and everyone else involved with the club’s effort. He agreed to a new fourth term in charge of Wigan after being linked to Aston Villa, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

“Obviously it was an interesting summer, predominantly because we were so successful in the second half of the campaign – and that is credit to everyone at the football club, not just me,” Martinez said. “After that, it was a time for contemplation, and a very important period for everyone, because it’s been three years since I arrived.

That was always going to be a time where we’d look back and assess the improvement and achievements we have made both on and off the pitch. “The chairman is still full of energy, and is desperate to kick on and continue taking this football club forward.

We are all excited about the new project, how we are progressing as a football club on many levels, and getting ready for what will be a challenging and fascinating season ahead.

“I feel we are there in terms of matters on the field. And in other departments of the football club we are slowly progressing towards where we want to be – and where we have to be,” Martinez stated.

Lawrence and the Wigan squad are in Sweden for a preseason camp ahead of their Premiership opener against Chelsea in just about six weeks time.

Trinbago, NBA & World Basketball / NBA Trades

Sources: Steve Nash to Lakers

Steve Nash to Lakers in sign-and-trade deal. Beto Duran of ESPN LA 710 breaks down the deal.

In an unforeseen twist that could thrust the Los Angeles Lakers straight back into title contention, two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash has successfully negotiated a sign-and-trade deal from the Phoenix Suns to the Lakers that will team him up with Kobe Bryant, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

Steve Nash statement

Nash For the last 8 seasons I've been blessed to play for a team and a city that has embraced me and that I have come to call home. This is a tough business and the only thing constant in life is change.

After talking with (owner) Robert (Sarver) and (president of basketball operations) Lon (Babby) we've agreed that it's time for both of us to move in new directions. I approached them and asked if they would be willing to do a sign and trade deal with L.A. because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family.

They were very apprehensive and didn't want to do it. Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better.

I couldn't be more grateful to the organization and Robert in particular. I know how hard this was for him and that fact that he was able to help me and my family in this way ... it means a lot and says a lot about his character. I will never forget this gesture. Above and beyond.

The Phoenix Suns are an amazing organization and fans should be excited about their future. I hope the Suns win a championship some day soon for all the amazing fans and wonderful people in the organization.

Sources told ESPN.com that Nash, with the New York Knicks also pressing hard to complete a similar sign-and-trade deal, was swayed to join the Lakers after a determined push from Bryant and because the move keeps him in the title hunt and allows him to stay in close proximity to his three children in Phoenix.

Nash will receive a three-year deal in excess of $25 million, sources said, because the Suns ultimately agreed to sign-and-trade him to the Lakers, who can absorb Nash via the trade exception they created by dealing Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks in December.

The Suns will receive 2013 and 2015 first-round picks and 2013 and 2014 second-round picks from the Lakers, according to the Arizona Republic.

The deal can't be officially completed until July 11, when a leaguewide moratorium on new business is lifted.

The Lakers are no longer trying to retain point guard Ramon Sessions, who opted out of the final year and $4.55 million of his contract to become a free agent, a source told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne.

Sessions was hoping for the security of a longer term contract, but while discussions with the Lakers were positive, they never progressed toward a multiyear deal, the source told Shelburne.

Difficult as it is on some levels for the Suns to help the face of the franchise get to the Lakers -- especially after years of playoff battles with them in the Nash Era -- sources say team owner Robert Sarver finally agreed to the trade after yielding to a plea from Nash to send him to a destination where he could maintain the closest possible ties to his children and still chase the ring that has eluded him for 16 seasons.

The Lakers clinched the deal by surrendering the package of picks, but sources said that the Suns did decide to reward Nash for all the success he delivered over the past eight seasons.

Sending Nash to the team of his choosing ensures that the sides part on good terms after it became clear in recent days that the Suns left little doubt since free agency began Sunday at 12:01 a.m. that they were prepared to move in a different direction instead of trying to match the determined bids for Nash coming from the Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Knicks and Lakers to retain the 38-year-old.

The Knicks were equally high on Nash's list in a sign-and-trade scenario -- he's an offseason Manhattan resident -- and the Raptors were initially seen as the favorite for Nash's services after quickly registering a three-year, $36 million offer. The Brooklyn Nets and Mavericks also pursued Nash, Dallas in particular after the Nets won the Deron Williams sweepstakes earlier Tuesday.

Yet, Nash ultimately decided that the chance to team with Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, the three-year deal he had been hoping for, and ability to keep a West Coast base near his children could not be passed up.

Ironically, though, Nash said just last week in a radio interview with ESPN NewYork 98.7's Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruocco that it would be difficult on some levels to join Miami after the Heat just won the championship or sign with the Lakers after all their playoff battles the past eight years.

"The truth is I'm a bit old school," Nash said in the June 25 interview. "For me, it would be hard to put on a Lakers jersey. That's just the way it is. You play against them so many times in the playoffs, and I just use them as an example, and I have the utmost respect for them and their organization.

"I kind of have that tendency (to try to beat the best teams), so it is strange, but as a free agent you're free to go where you want, so I'd have to consider everything regardless of the past or the future."

More on the Lakers

For more news and notes on the Lakers, check out the Land O' Lakers blog from the Kamenetzky brothers. Blog

It had been anticipated that Phoenix would offer Nash a new two-year deal worth at least $20 million, but the Arizona Republic reported Friday night that the Suns "do not appear willing to meet (Nash's) wish for a three-year deal." On draft night last week, Suns officials immediately began fighting the perception that they selected North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall with the 13th pick as the first step in dealing with Nash's eventual departure.

Nash earned nearly $12 million last season and averaged 12.5 points and 10.7 assists for a team that, with no 20-point scorer, nearly snagged the last playoff spot in the West. The most difficult aspect of his decision, sources said, was turning down Toronto, which made the biggest financial offer to Nash in hopes of convincing Canada's best player ever to come north of the border and re-establish the Raptors as a playoff team in addition to his new role as general manager of the Canadian men's national team.

Sources told ESPN.com that Nash will try to convince longtime teammate Grant Hill, one of his closest friends in the game, to join him with the Lakers. ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported over the weekend the Lakers were one of four teams (along with Toronto, New York and Phoenix) in the running for Hill after the 39-year-old's recent trip to Germany to undergo the same platelet-enrichment treatment on his knee that Bryant credited for his rejuvenated knee last season.

T&T women lose to Cuba in Centro

T&T women’s basketball team suffered a huge 88-36 loss to Cuba in the opening match of the FIBA Americas Centrobasket Championships which jumped off in Morovis, Puerto Rico, yesterday. It was a one-sided affair from the jump with the Cubans leading throughout, 25-4 in the first quarter, 43-16 at the half and 67-28 in the third. Leading T&T in scoring was point guard Rhea Codio, who connected a match-high 13 points. Unfortunately, she led in turnovers five in T&T’s 20 compared to nine from Cuba. T&T was topped in every faucet of the game, getting punished through second chance points with Cuba getting 23 to T&T’s four and being totally outscored off of fast breaks, 24-0.

Cuba fielded most of its players that topped the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships held in Nassau, Bahamas, last year. Islen Carbonell Veranes, Yamara Amargo Delgado Leidys Oquendo Valdes each scored 12 points with Oyanaisy Gelis Gonzalez and Taimy Fernandez Martinez, netting 11 and 10, respectively. When the teams last met in the CBC tournament, T&T went under by a similarly huge margin, 80-32. However, the CBC silver medalists will look to bounce back today when they meet US Virgin Islands (USVI) in its second group B match. T&T, which is being coached by Puerto Rican Ivan Flores, topped USVI at last year’s CBC event, 76-68. Tomorrow T&T faces off against Dominican Republic, another team they beat at CBC last year, 82-76. The local women will have to beat these two teams if they are to advance out of the qualifying round. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the final bounces off the next day. The top four teams qualify for the 2013 FIBA-Americas Championship (World Qualifier).

U-17's men's squad down to 32 ahead of CFU qualifiers.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

National Under 17 Men’s head coach Shawn Cooper says his squad’s preparation has started to take shape ahead of the upcoming Caribbean Football Union World qualifiers to take place in this country from July 3rd.

However, Cooper, who led the previous T&T team to within one victory of qualification for the 2011 FIFA Under 17 World Cup, has not closed the door on local or overseas-based players eligible of representing T&T.  Back in 2011, T&T needed to defeat Canada in its quarter-final fixture to qualify for the World Championship in Mexico but disappointingly lost the match 2-0 in Montego Bay.

Since the start of the talent search campaign last month, Cooper has seen just under 100 players and he is currently working with a squad that has been trimmed to 32 players including eight goalkeepers. However, one of the bright young prospects to serve in goal, W Connection’s Stephan Seepersad has had to be withdrawn from the team at this stage due to a heart complication. His club, W Connection is overseeing his medical requirements and  the TTFF is also assisting as deemed necessary.

“It’s been difficult trying to put everything together in such a short space of time but we’re getting there and we’re making things work at this point,” Cooper told TTFF Media.

“It’s no secret that the resources are not at its best because of the tough circumstances the Federation is in at the moment but they (TTFF) are trying their best to make things work and with that we are working with what we have in trying to get the team into the best possible shape for the tournament.”

Cooper will include at least five US-based players into the training in early June while players from Tobago will also have their chance to vie for final selection. One player, Akeem Garcia, has the experience of the previous Under 17 qualifying campaign with the likes of ex-captain Duane Muckette and others graduating the Under 20 team which is also in training ahead of a qualifying campaign.

Cooper along with recently introduced assistant coach Leonson Lewis and Ross Russell have been overseeing sessions three days per week at the Ato Boldon Stadium but Cooper adds that his Saturday sessions have had to be tapered due to the Oasis Pro League youth competition still ongoing.

“We get in at least two good sessions every week but the third session normally has to be cut back on because of the boys that play in the youth Pro League. This is something that we have to iron out because I understand the  League is running until June 20th and our first game is on July 3rd which means that we will be in live-in camps prior to that and we will need the players on a full time basis. I expect that some sort of mutual arrangement will be made with the League and the clubs to facilitate this,” Cooper added.

“A team like Suriname is always organized and you don’t know what to expect from Guyana so we have to prepare well and we cannot afford to take any of these teams lightly,” Cooper concluded.

Caribbean qualifying for the Under 17s will be played from July 3-10th with Trinidad hosting one of the groups which will see them come up against Suriname, British Virgin Islands and Guyana.

The group winner of the five groups and the best second placed team will advance to the final CFU round in August. The 2013 FIFA Under 17 World Cup takes place in United Arab Emirates. The dates for the CONCACAF final round will be announced in due course.

T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 player Cordell Cato has become the latest Trinidadian to sign a professional contract to play in American Major League Soccer (MLS) after agreeing to a one-year deal with Seattle Sounders this week.

Nineteen-year-old Cato had been on trial there earlier this year and Sounders placed him on their discovery list before eventually offering the deal, which is a one-year contract with the option for an additional two years. His agent Evans Wise relayed the news yesterday.

"Right now we're just working on some final documents before he comes back over to join the Seattle team. He has to be here in time to get things started with them by January 15.

He will also complete a medical when he returns and the club will then unveil him," Wise told Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) media officer Shaun Fuentes.

"It's a great opportunity for him and I'm happy for Cordell because he's one of the players who has worked very hard.

He hasn't been on the national team in recent times but that doesn't deny talent when it comes to taking opportunities," said Wise, who also represents midfielder Kelvin Molino and Ataullah Guerra, who was on trial with DC United and Philadelphia Union earlier this year.

Cato, formerly of St Anthony's College, will attempt to make an impact at Seattle as they head into pre-season training.

"I'm really looking forward to joining the club and I'm very excited to take on this next chapter in my career. I never played in the T&T Pro League. I've trained with Defence Force and now to get this opportunity is the best thing to happen to me in my life so far,' Cato told Fuentes.

"Seattle  are a club with a lot of ambitions and great facilities and I think this can be an excellent opportunity to develop as a player and play a part in their attempts to be victorious in the MLS," said Cato.

Rundell draws NBA comparison!

According to an article by reporter Jagdip Dhillon on Recordnet.com, Trinidad & Tobago Rundell Mague is being compared to the Michael Olowokandi by Coach Bob Thomason.

Olowokandi, who played for Thomason at the University of Pacific, went on to become the No. 1 pick of the 1998 NBA Draft. Thomason assess Rundell as relatively new to the game of basketball, has an impressive 7-foot-1, 245-pound frame and limitless upside. 'He can have a major impact around the basket as he learns the game,' Thomason said. 'He's going to have some ups and downs, but I'm going to be very patient with him this year.'

Thomason said the comparisons to Olowokandi are natural and not that far off-base. He said Mauge has better basketball awareness at the same point in their development, but Olowokandi was much stronger and a force offensively by his junior season.

Mauge was red shirted in his first year at Pacific due to an injury. He was recovering from hernia surgery and had a muscle tear in his right leg, so he didn't practice with the team until March. Mauge has since gained 27 pounds in 13 months, a result of 'eating and lifting weights.'

Despite playing for only one year, Mauge travelled from Trinidad to Texas during the 2006 Easter vacations with the Millennium Basketball Academy team. During the tour he attracted a lot of attention with his height and athletic ability. By September 2006, he was back in the US to pursue his basketball career.
Mauge was recruited to play a season at Putnam Science Academy, a prep school in Connecticut. Coach Kevin O'Connor then recruited him to play at North Platte Community College, Nebraska. O'Connor said Mauge's play helped his team reach the NJCAA National Tournament, averaging 5.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 blocks.

Thomason said Mauge's initial impact should come on the defensive end, but he wants him to become a better rebounder and more assertive on offense. Mauge, who's a communication major and plans to graduate in December, feels he's ready for the next level.

'My post moves are a lot more developed and I'm a lot smarter on defense than I used to be,' Mauge said. 'I expect myself to play my role and help us win.'
