CONCACAF just made it easier for the USMNT to qualify for the World Cup

While the United States women’s national team celebrated another victory at the World Cup, the men suddenly found it easier to reach theirs.

CONCACAF announced a revamp in its World Cup qualifying format, which should benefit the USMNT.

What are the changes? Primarily, the qualifying process will be split into two separate competitions, a hexagonal and a knockout phase. In cycles past, the hexagonal, or “Hex”, represented the final stage of qualifying with six teams playing a double round-robin to determine World Cup berths.

Only now, those six teams won’t have to play their way in. Instead, the Hex will be determined through the FIFA rankings published after the June 2020 window. In other words, the top six ranked teams from CONCACAF will just qualify automatically. From there, the top three finishers earn World Cup berths, and the fourth is still alive for another. We’ll get to that in a second.

So what do the rest of the teams in CONCACAF do? The teams ranked Nos. 7 through 35 will take part in the knockout phase, which will divide them into eight groups and pit the winners of each group against each other in a tournament, which will feature a two-leg elimination format.

The winner of this knockout competition will face the fourth-place finisher from the Hex, and then that winner will go to an inter-continental playoff to determine the 2022 World Cup berth, which has been a feature of cycles past as well.

Got all that?

Here’s the brass tacks for the USMNT. The FIFA rankings are determined through a complicated and frequently criticized point system, but the USMNT is basically always among the top six CONCACAF teams. In the most recent rankings, it’s 30th in the world and second only to Mexico in the region, and would need to fall 46 spots to miss out on the Hex. So even given the hideous failure of the 2018 qualifying cycle, the USMNT isn’t missing this upcoming Hex.

As pointed out by the good folks over at Total Soccer Show, instead of playing regional minnows in an effort to qualify for the Hex, the USMNT can now schedule better opposition in friendlies during international windows. They also won’t risk elimination at earlier stages of qualifying, although they’ve never failed to make the Hex anyway.

Even after a solid Gold Cup, the USMNT can’t strut around like World Cup qualification is a sure thing. But this news from CONCACAF sure doesn’t hurt.

PORT OF SPAIN (Trinidad and Tobago) — Doors have started to open wide in Trinidad for two outstanding young players that are showing great promise in basketball.

According to the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT), two of their best basketball players younger than 13, Ty Warwick and Carissa Ramdial, have been called to participate at Club Enterprise Basketball in Maryland, USA, as part of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).

This is a great opportunity for these girls to experience a higher level of competition and, at the same time, showcase their abilities in front of high school coaches and academies with superb athletic programs.

The first tournament will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from June 28 to July 1 and players could eventually participate in other competitions in the future.

“The NBFTT is very proud of our elite women athletes Carissa Ramdial and Ty Warwick,” said Federation President Claire Mitchell to FIBA.basketball. “This could open doors for other young prospects at a time when the development of women’s basketball in Trinidad and Tobago is on the rise.”

In Warwick’s case, she had already participated in the club last year and was an essential part of the roster that achieved the title of the Summer Slam Tournament. This made her the recipient of an invitation to play with the team to the East Coast AAU National Championships.

Ramdial, for her part, had been part of the Latin American camp of the Jr. NBA in Brazil after being scouted by UBA’s coach in 2018.

AAU is one of the largest nonprofit sports organizations in the world. Established in 1930, today it has more than 700,000 members and 150,000 volunteers in its 41 sports programs. The organization's mission is to offer local and national sports events to promote the mental, moral and physical development of its participants.

COLLEGIATE PLAYERS WILL BE COACHING ASSISTANTS IN FRANCE

Meanwhile, the Federation also announced that two of its national college players were chosen to be assistant coaches in several camps that will take place in France. Jeffery Harris and Joel Hinds will be part of the Frenchy US Camp, whose schedule includes over 110 stops throughout three months, and will welcome players of the ages of 9 to 20. The opportunity arises from the initiative of national team players Kyle Rowley and former national team General Manager Albert Lee Young, who will oversee the global marketing strategy of the camps.

Football / Where we rank?
« on: June 26, 2019, 08:10:46 AM »
So after being kings of the Caribbean in the '80's and early '90's where allyuh think we rank now? just in the Caribbean.
I say Jamaica, Haiti,Curacao, and Martinique definitely above us right now, so for me, the highest is 5th, so we cyar even make a semi final in ah Caribbean tournament. We may be tossing up with Bermuda and Cuba without defections. Tonight we'll see with Guyana.
Who knows, we may not even make a Caribbean top 10 right now..... Guadeloupe, Fr Guiana.

Bridgewater off to Weatherford College

T&T basketballer, Joshua Bridgewater has officially committed to Weatherford College in Texas to begin his athletic college career. The 19 year old recently celebrated the completion of his final year at Trinity Catholic High School in Hutchinson, Kansas in light of the institution's graduation ceremony over the weekend.

Bridgewater, who is from the Maloney Pacers Basketball Club and Youth Development Programme, has been enrolled in Trinity High's basketball programme for the past two (2) years. In his final year, he was instrumental in the team's successful run during the 2018 - 2019 season.

Averaging 8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, Bridgewater also had several standout performances throughout the year. He recorded a total of 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks as he helped Trinity High secure an easy 73-20 win over the Independent High School of Wichita in February, 2019.

On the 28th February, he was the second player to score in double figures, adding 12 points to the Trinity's 62-57 win versus Garden Plain High School in the sub-state semi-finals. Trinity High went on to be crowned the Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 2A sub-state champions, earning them a trip to the state basketball championships in March. They completed the regular season ranked no. 1 in the state, and were runners up in state championship finals.

Bridgewater, who was born and raised in Chaguanas, attended Chaguanas North Secondary School before moving to the U.S. in 2017. Competing collegiately was a life-long sporting goal for the six-foot-9-inch forward. He stated that 'Playing in college has been a dream for me ever since I've been in sports. I want to represent my country and show everyone that anyone can make it no matter where you are from.

Damn NY, first the Giants messed up in the NFL draft now no luck for the Knicks after tanking for Zion....NY is just cursed lol

In this case tanking(cheating) did not pay.

they changed the rules of the weighted balls. The worst team had a 25% chance before, this year the worst team only had 14% . The NBA is trying to avoid tanking.... a bit too late, Philly did it for years and the NBA did nothing... same team for years.
