Football / 'Warriors' take an early stroll
« on: August 17, 2005, 05:22:16 PM »
By: Shaun Fuentes

Leo Beenhakker started the match day off on a bright note by leading his team in a short walk around the Sheraton Hotel block as the "Warriors" began pacing themselves for tonight's CONCACAF 2006 World Cup qualifier against the United States.

The team was indoors for the rest of the day with intervals for lunch which followed a team-talk ahead of the departure from the hotel at 6:25pm.

The previous evening, the team had a run out at the match venue which appeared in good conditions. The stands are situated upclose to the playing area which presents a perfect atmosphere for an exhillariting night of action.

At the venue too were ESPN commentators John Paul Delacamera and former US player Marcelo Balboa who both had chats with Beenhakker after the session.

"I expect it to be a good match between two good teams who will be up for a good challenge," Balboa said. DelaCamera enquired more about the status of the T&T players, their backgrounds and the recent running of the team for his commentary.

As the session went on, Beenhakker would say the following:  "Have patience. Keep the ball until the next possibility arises. Always keep your eyes on the ball. When you have the space, go for it, there's no problem with that. Everyone must know how the house is built and we go from there.

In conversation with ESPN, he added "We know what we want and we know how we should play to get that. They did better in the last two World Cup games (against Panama and Mexico). Panama is a good team and in that game we saw the beginning of better organization by our team"

Asked about his decision to  take the T&T job, he said "I take the time to do it, why not?"

About the new faces in the team, he went on: "Kenwyne and Scott are having very good moments and we have to use these moments if possible.

"There are no secrets in soccer anymore. The US is a very good team and they are physically strong. We realise that they are using maybe four players from the last game against Trinidad. But we have to go along with our spirit. I am in charge of my team and we will play our game as we see it."

Football / John reviews past for future success
« on: August 17, 2005, 05:29:41 AM »
By: Shaun Fuentes

National striker Stern John, who has not been enjoying the best of form in recent times, revealed on the weekend in Connecticut that he has been spending time reviewing some of his better goals for Columbus Crew and Nottingham Forest on DVDs.
According to the Coventry City forward, it is a way of reminding him of his capabilities, as he strives to lift himself out of a slump.
“ I have been watching some DVDs and tapes of my old goals. I also looked at the old video Columbus Crew sent to David Platt, which was really what he saw before signing me at Forest,” John said.
John appears fit, having dropped some extra pounds.
“It’s a huge game for the team and I definitely want to do well. Playing the US is always a big occasion for us,” John said.
Despite his recent lack of form, John remains T&T’s highest goalscorer in international football, with 60 goals in 81 matches - up to the Gold Cup match vs Panama.

Here is a list of players who have yellow cards going into this match.  Let's remember the next game against Guatemala is maybe even more important than this one.  Men on yellows need to be extra careful.  That means you Dwight.

In current squad
dwight
andrews
spann
whitely
avery
theobald
sancho

Others
edwards
eve
rahim
rojas
a. pierre

Also Ruiz has a yellow going into this Panama match.  If he picks up another that will be a big boost.

Football / Beenhakker calls up Anthony Wolfe
« on: August 15, 2005, 10:00:01 AM »
By Shaun Fuentes

National Quarries North East Stars player Anthony Wolfe (not Glenton as previously mentioned) will travel on Monday to join the Trinidad and Tobago squad in Connecticut as a replacement for Brent Rahim.
Leo Beenhakker was forced to make the late call after Rahim pulled up with a calf strain in training on Sunday morning and he will now journey back to Trinidad.
Wolfe will be the 18th player in the camp with Scott Sealy, Avery John, Dennis Lawrence, Shaka Hislop, Kelvin Jack, Collin Samuel and Stern John all checking in at the Sheraton on Sunday. Marvin Andrews was not here up until Sunday night.

This still eh making no sense, a striker to replace Rahim?  This would seem to indicate that Yorke will be played in midfield.  But what about CORNELL GLEN?

Football / Columbus Crew vs Fulham

Crew win.  Glen didn't play

Host with the most: Crew stun Fulham
By Jason Halpin / MLSnet.com Staff

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Crew topped English Premier League side Fulham FC 2-1 Wednesday night at Crew Stadium in former Crew striker Brian McBride's return to Columbus. McBride played the second half in his first-ever match against the Black and Gold.
Crew midfielder Domenic Mediate scored the game-winner in the 86th minute after Fulham defender Zesh Rehman's clearance bounced straight to the rookie's feet following a deflection off 'keeper Jaroslav Drobny. Marcus Storey had given Columbus a 17th-minute lead, but an own goal pulled Fulham level just before halftime.

The winner came when it seemed the teams were destined to draw, as the pace and flow of play leveled off in the second half. Mario Rodriguez started the sequence by feeding John Wolyniec over the visitors' defense. Wolyniec tried to chip the 'keeper, and though Drobny appeared to have it covered, Rehman came through with a clearance attempt that went awry. Mediate made no misstep in punishing the error.

There was little difference between the sides in the first half, and after the teams traded a couple of harmless efforts on goal in the early going, the Crew took the lead after 17 minutes.
Rookie Eric Vasquez, who is becoming a fixture in central midfield under interim head coach Robert Warzycha, spread the ball wide to Danny Szetela, who delivered an inswinger from the right. The speedy University of North Carolina product Storey beat Fulham defender Moritz Volz to the ball at the back post to side-foot home the game's first goal.

For Fulham, Luis Boa Morte and Collins John were the main aggressors in the opening stanza. In the 16th minute, Dutch-born striker John fought off a handful of Crew defenders 15 yards from goal to turn and fire a shot that was deflected out for a corner. Fifteen minutes later, Boa Morte sprinted to the endline to drop a pass for striker Heidar Helguson, but the Icelandic striker's shot went directly to Crew 'keeper Jonny Walker.
Helguson had another chance from a Boa Morte pass in the 38th minute, but again his shot was turned away by Walker. Finally, two minutes before the half, Boa Morte converted with the help of Crew defender Chris Wingert. After another dash to the endline, Boa Morte slipped a ball into the six-yard box, and with no Fulham shirts in sight, Wingert inadvertently tapped the ball home to put the visitors on the board.

After the break, McBride and former Fire defender Carlos Bocanegra entered as each side made a handful of changes. With the changes came a significant decrease in the speed and flow of play, though each team had its moments.
For the visitors, the best chance of the second half came just 10 minutes in, as summer signing Ahmad Elrich sent his shot wide after being sent in alone on goal. McBride had a pair of shots against his former mates, but did nothing to trouble substitute 'keeper Bill Gaudette.
The home side also saw very little action in the attacking third until Mediate's opportune winner. After the goal, Wolyniec nearly added the Crew's third in the closing stages, but his shot went wide left.

What about Track & Field / Boldon says T&T relay men are team to beat
« on: July 26, 2005, 08:56:08 PM »
By KWAME WILLIAMS
Trinidad Guardian

Retired T&T sprinter Ato Boldon has said that once the members of this nation’s men’s 4x100 metres relay team stay injury-free, they are almost sure to win medals at the August 6-14 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

At the Helsinki Grand Prix on Monday, the T&T quartet comprising Central American and Caribbean Senior Championships 100m gold medallist Darrel Brown, national 100m champion Marc Burns, 2003 national sprint double champion Jacey Harper, and national 200m title winner Aaron Armstrong, won the meet’s relay event in 38.38 seconds—a new T&T record and the best time for the event in the world this year.

It was the second time for the year that the T&T sprinters improved the national record and clocked a world-leading time. The first was at the CAC Championships in Nassau earlier this month when they retained the men’s sprint relay crown in 38.47 secs.

Boldon, a quadruple Olympic Games sprint medallist, said yesterday that even before the team’s performance on Monday, he felt the youths would easily be among the medals at the “Worlds.”
“The relay team is doing very well and I think they are already medal contenders—even if they didn’t improve one more hundredth of a second before the games,” Boldon said.

T&T’s best sprint relay result at the biennial World Championships came in 2001 in Edmonton, Canada. There, a Boldon-Brown-Burns-Harper combination won the bronze medals in 38.58 seconds. They failed to place among the top three teams at the 2003 edition of the meet, bowing out of the competition at the semi-final stage.  This time around, Boldon believes the team is in an excellent position to better the third-place finish of 2001.

“I watched the latest national record race and they are passing the stick as well as anyone else, which, apart from an incident or two in the last four years, is the trademark of the T&T team. Now they also have healthy personnel,” he said.  “When this team won bronze at Worlds in 2001, I thought we would be a sub-38 team in another year or two. But injuries to several members hampered that, so we under-achieved.   “Now, they are healthy and running as a team. This may well be the year,” Boldon said.

He even applauded the National Amateur Athletics Association—with whom he was embroiled in a conflict after he questioned the legitimacy of the times clocked in the men’s 100m final at last month’s Sagicor Open Championships—for its handling of the team.
“The other reason why this team is running so well is because they are running together pre-championships, which is something that was rarely done before, so the NAAA is to be commended for that.”

Football / Yorke, John on target
« on: July 24, 2005, 09:00:40 AM »
Leo knows 'Warriors' can lift it - Yorke.
By: Shaun Fuentes

National senior team coach Leo Beenhakker received promising news yesterday—his two strikers Dwight Yorke and Stern John were on target for their clubs in pre-season action.
Yorke, playing in his first game for Sydney FC, was reported to have put in a good all- round performance as his team defeated New Zealand Knights 3-1 on Friday night.
John scored the only goal as Coventry City ended its Republic of Ireland trip with a win over Galway United.
Another T&T striker, Kenwyne Jones, got in 90 minutes as Southampton drew 1-1 with Bournemouth on Friday.
With his countryman, Guus Hiddink, recently appointed coach of Australia, looking on from the VIP box at the Sydney FC match, Beenhakker surely will be hoping that Yorke can carry his form into the World Cup qualifiers, beginning with the next clash away to the United States next month.
“The new competition’s benchmark signing did all that could have been expected of him, and perhaps a bit more. He scored—albeit with a penalty—he worked hard on and off the ball during his 74 minutes on the park, and he helped pull a decent attendance,” the Sunday Herald wrote on Yorke
“For me the result is the most important thing and tonight we won so that is great,” Yorke said. “It was a really enjoyable experience playing with this team.
“I was impressed with my team-mates and the way they conducted themselves on the pitch.”
Yorke even had time to talk about his renewed interest in helping T&T get to the World Cup and he isn’t taking away from his commitment to the cause.
He pointed out that Beenhakker can raise a team’s level of play and he has intentions of playing a part in that following the disappointment of the Gold Cup effort of which he was not involved.
“Whether I play in Sydney or Dubai, or wherever, the coach (Leo Beenhakker) knows I’m capable of lifting my game to international level,” he said.
“Playing in the World Cup is the biggest event for a footballer, and it’s what’s missing from the mantelpiece. For four years I retired from international football... I didn’t feel T&T was a team which was going places. Now I have the desire again.
“After talking to people back home, I felt I should give it one more go. I didn’t want it to be something that would haunt me for the rest of my life,” Yorke told the Sydney Herald.
John, on the other hand, got his goal in the 14th minute when he received a ball from Andy Morrell and completed the move with a pinpoint finish into the bottom corner.
Clayton Ince was in goal for Coventry.
“It was a good performance, far better than when we lost in the week. It’s good to get into the habit of winning and scoring goals. It’s something that I will hope to repeat for Trinidad too,” John said.
Jones, making his first appearance for the Saints since the Concacaf Gold Cup, went close in the 15th minute with a header which narrowly missed the mark and then forced Neil Moss to save a left-footed strike from 25 yards out.
Across in Scotland, Marvin Andrews resumed training with Glasgow Rangers after being given a week off by manager Alex McLeish to recuperate after the Gold Cup and was also rested as Rangers drew 0-0 with German side Borussia Moenchengladbach at Ibrox yesterday.
Beenhakker, well aware of what the United States is up to, coming from a goal down to steal a late win against Honduras to book their spot in Sunday’s Concacaf Gold Cup final against Panama, welcomes the progress being shown by some of the “Warriors”.
“It’s an important period and it’s good for them to go back to their clubs and get on with some pre-season preparation,” Beenhakker said. “We need everyone to be in good shape, because we all know how much it will require of us to get good results.
“As professionals, everyone is aware of what they need to do to achieve the results that will take us through. There are some things that we need to correct as a team and we will get together again next month for the game. But the job goes on with the players getting ready for their seasons.”
Defender Brent Sancho and goalkeeper Kelvin Jack also appeared for Brighton on trial, but they were trounced 5-2 by Colchester United yesterday.
Jack played the entire game, in which Brighton were up 2-1 at one stage, while Sancho was subbed in the second half.

Football / Finals' glitter better than Gold for Ticos
« on: July 20, 2005, 08:42:48 PM »
19 July 2005
by FIFAworldcup.com

Costa Rica's early exit from the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup left head coach Alexandre Guimaraes in philosophical mood ahead of the crucial 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ qualifier against Mexico at the imposing Azteca Stadium on 17 August.
With only five qualifiers to go, the third-placed Central Americans are hoping to use lessons learned and new talents unearthed at the regional championship as they hunt a second consecutive spot at the finals.
Many in football-mad Costa Rica questioned the wisdom of bringing what was effectively an experimental squad to the Gold Cup in the United States. And it seems these fears were justified as the Ticos took their time finding reasonable form and goals before being beaten by unfashionable neighbours Honduras at the first hurdle of knockout competition.
"The World Cup is clearly the most important thing for Costa Rica," Guimaraes told FIFAworldcup.com after seeing his side lose 3-2 to Honduras in a quarter-final in which their lack of experience contributed to the young team conceding three goals in the first 30 minutes. "Of course we would have liked to go a little farther in the competition, but we will be a stronger team once qualifying starts again because of our experience here."

New faces, new options
Without the tried-and-true attacking options of Paulo Wanchope, Ronald Gomez, Alonso Solis and Walter Centeno, the Brazilian-born coach – in his second stint at the Costa Rican helm – used the occasion to forge some newcomers in the heat of battle.

Though veteran Jafet Soto was surely the glue that held the unfamiliar side together, new boy Randall Brenes burst out of his shell in the United States as well. After barely beating Canada in the first match, Guimaraes brought on Cartagines forward Brenes as a substitute in the next game against Cuba. Scoring a header and a penalty in the 3-1 win, Brenes made a sure impression on what was his senior debut.
"This is what I dreamed of," the 22-year-old trumpeted with a broad grin after leading the Ticos to their second win in a row. "I am thrilled to have helped the team."

"We used new players in this tournament and the real objective of these games was to look around at new players and make some decisions looking forward to the World Cup," the coach added with an eye on next month's visit to old rivals Mexico – also quarter-final losers - at the fabled Azteca. "Despite going out, we have taken steps in the right direction."

Back to the Azteca
The Mexicans have been in rip-roaring form throughout qualifying and again in last month's FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany before their largely experimental side suffered an early elimination at the Gold Cup.
Clearly Guimaraes – whose legend in the country is secure after having played in Costa Rica's finals debut in Italy in 1990 – will be hoping to draw on their inspirational success of 2001. During his first spell in charge, he saw his side hand Mexico a historic defeat at the Azteca – a first in El Tri's long and distinguished history of FIFA World Cup qualifying.
"It won't be easy to get over Mexico in Mexico City," Guimaraes added, knowing the altitude and atmosphere from first-hand experience. "But we know that it is not impossible. In the previous qualifiers we managed to win there and we'll need to draw on that experience for this game."

Currently third with seven points in the final qualifying group (six points behind leaders Mexico), the Costa Ricans will be desperate to finish in the top three of the six-team 'Hexagonal', thus ensuring direct passage to their second consecutive and third overall FIFA World Cup finals. Fourth place would leave them with hopes of a back-door berth via a play-off with an Asian side.

Football / Beenie Man did NOT Experiment!!
« on: July 13, 2005, 07:39:32 AM »
People on this board keep alluding to the fact that we were experimenting in this Gold Cup as the reason why we lost.  Truth be told that we were the only team that brought the vast majority of our World Cup Squad to the Gold Cup and played them.  The only one missing was Yorke, and Edwards was injured.

Look at the squad vs Mexico and the squad vs Honduras.  Three changes were made: Cyd Gray for Charles, Rahim for Edwards and Scotland for Yorke.  Is this what we call experimenting?  If Edwards was fit and Yorke was there I can guarantee you they would have played too.
So we really made one experiment which was 30 something year-old Cyd Gray who has been tried and failed umpteen times in the past.  Brilliant.

After that match we were forced to make a few changes.  Spann comes in for Whitely because he was injured - if not Spann probably would not have gotten a chance to play at all.  That was NOT an experiment.  Samuel comes in on the left because the coach finally sees after 5 games that Theobald is not a left winger.  So he switches him to the right for Rahim.  This is the ONLY experiment we made - no other changes.

Colombia game now.  Strikers have been ineffective for two games.  Jones sitting on the bench.  So we stick with the same 2 strikers.  Glen comes in OUT OF POSITION on the left and Samuel moves to the right.  ONE experiment was made in the starting lineup and it was DOOMED to fail from the beginning.  Half time what do we do?  Take off Glen and bring in Rahim?  take off scotland and bring in Eve to strike?  Were we really trying to see what Eve can do as striker in preparation for the USA game?  What a joke.  Atiba finally gets a chance to play because of injury, no experiment there.

So lets summarize these wild and crazy experiments that Beenie was making:
Jacks plays all 3 games
Avery plays all 3 games
Andrews plays all 3 games
Lawrence plays all 3 games
Gray plays all 3 games
Birchall plays all 3 games
Stern plays all 3 games
Scotland plays all 3 games because Yorke not there
Spann plays 2 games because of injury to Whitely
Samuel gets a sub appearance and 2 full games on the wing because of Edwards injury
Theobald plays 2 games, Rahim a game and a half (both players also featured against Mexico)

Meanwhile
Glen gets a 8 mins sweat and a full half in the wrong position
Jones gets two 20-minute sub appearances
Eve gets a full half as a striker???  Plus a sub appearance on the wing
Atiba gets a small sweat becuase of injury to Andrews

Experimenting with players was NOT the reason why we lost!

Football / What next?
« on: July 12, 2005, 05:45:20 PM »
Something happened over there in Miami.  It seemed as though the team lost all desire and hunger to play football.  We played shit first match and got progressively worse mainly in terms of lack of effort.  I'm not sure who is to blame for this - coach, captain, players, team management but it looked as though the team just wanted to get out of the US as quickly as possible and just were not enjoying their football.
Where do we go from here in terms of preparation for USA?  How do we pick ourselves back up?  All the players will be re-joining their clubs for preseason training and we will not see them until August 12.  Will we try to arrange any friendlies?  Is it even worth the effort and expense to fly people around for that?  We were probably the worst out of 12 teams in the Gold Cup.  Do we really believe we can be one of 4 Concacaf teams to go to Germany?

What about Track & Field / Brown edges Burns for gold at CAC Games
« on: July 10, 2005, 06:00:30 AM »
Trinidad Express
By: Kwame Laurence

Darrel Brown became only the third Trinidad and Tobago sprinter to lift the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Championship men's 100 metres crown when he produced a sizzling 10.02 seconds run at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, late last night.
Brown followed in the footsteps of 1975 champion Charlie Joseph and '77 gold medallist Hasely Crawford.
Brown's clocking, a new Championship record, earned him the narrowest of victories over his compatriot Marc Burns, who was also credited with a 10.02 run.
Just two-thousandths of a second separated the T&T sprinters (10.014 to 10.016) in the thrilling duel.
Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles copped third spot in 10.10.

09/JUL/2005 -Both teams came out running and within a few minutes both goalkeepers faced danger situations.
Costa Rica had more scoring chances early in the encounter, but a resolute Cuban defense stifled the Central American squad as Cuban goalkeeper Odelin Molina blocked a shot from Brian Ruiz in the 4th minute.
Cuba, for its part, had two solid scoring opportunities early on, but the Costa Rican defense repelled those attacks and imposed a slower pace on the match.
Despite the offensive efforts of both sides, the score was tied 0-0 going into halftime.
But the goal drought would come to an end in the second half as the Central Americans went into overdrive and wore down their opponent's defense.
In the 60th minute, Jafet Soto's corner kick found Randall Brenes in the box, and the latter headed in the pass to put Costa Rica up 1-0.
But Cuban forward Michael Galindo, not to be outdone, ran past the Costa Rican defenders and scored to make it a 1-1 game in the 72nd minute.
After the tying goal, Costa Rica pressed forward and took several direct shots in hopes of scoring again.
That persistence would pay off in the 79th minute, when Molina committed an infraction after trying to deflect a shot from forward Oscar Rojas.
Soto capitalized on the ensuing penalty kick, giving Costa Rica a 2-1 advantage.
Cuba sealed its fate four minutes later when forward Alexander Cruzata committed a foul against Brenes, who had to take the penalty kick twice after his teammates rushed the goalie area in celebration after a successful first attempt.
The win left Costa Rica comfortably atop Group B with six points, while Cuba is at the bottom with no points after a 4-1 loss to the United States Thursday.

Football / Edwards could return for Warriors

Ian Prescott in Miami

CARLOS EDWARDS should be fit to return to action tomorrow for Trinidad and Tobago in their crucial Group A showdown with surprise leaders Panama at the CONCACAF Gold Cup here in the United States.
The teams were scheduled to meet tonight at 7 p.m. at Miami's Orange Bowl in the first match of a double-header, with Colombia clashing with Honduras in the second game at 9 p.m. However, Hurricane Dennis forced the postponement to tomorrow.
There is almost certain to be something of a storm when Trinidad and Tobago face Panama for the second time in just over a month.
Panama have not ever beaten the "Warriors" in five starts, but gave a credible performance before going down 2-0 to T&T in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifier on June 4 in Port of Spain.
An upset 1-0 victory over Colombia on Wednesday gave Panama their first-ever Gold Cup success and put them atop the Group A standing with three points, after Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago played out a 1-1 draw in the second game on Wednesday.
Trinidad and Tobago were without influential right winger Edwards, who picked up a hamstring injury during the team's one-week pre-tournament camp in Fort Lauderdale last week.
Still on the injury list are defenders Brent Sancho and National Quarries North East Stars' Glenton Wolffe.
Following a somewhat jaded performance against Honduras, the Warriors have been busy and had two training sessions, including one yesterday morning.
A mix-up saw the morning warm-up shifted from the normal University of Miami training pitch to a ground on which the Colombians had been training.
Edwards, newly signed with Luton Town in England, has not trained with his national teammates since arriving in Miami, but has worked with the team's trainers.
T&T assistant manager George Joseph said he should be ready for tomorrow's Panama match and may replace Brent Rahim on the right flank. Joseph also said the Warriors are aware of the need to improve on Wednesday night's performance.
"They admit to themselves that they did not have such a good game," said Joseph. "We know that we can't have played much more badly. But everyone is upbeat and we are going all out to beat Panama."
T&T head coach Leo Beenhakker has stressed he will not be underestimating Panama, stating: "I expect the team will pick up and give a better performance."
The opponents, having previously dropped their two star players for disciplinary reasons, have now recalled brothers Jorge Luis Dely Valdez and Julio Cesar Dely Valdez, who they immediately installed as captain.
Julio Cesar Dely Valdez has a life-size sculpture of himself in the Spanish city of Oviedo. He also once finished eighth in voting for "CONCACAF's Player of the Century", a list that included great Mexican players such as Hugo Sanchez, Carlos Hermosillo and the late Luis Fuentes.
Panama coach Jose Hernandez, a Colombian, admitted that after a flagging World Cup qualifying campaign they had recalled the Dely Valdez brothers to assist in that competition and also the Gold Cup campaign.
"Yes," he admitted, "they were made to leave for disciplinary matters, but now the Valdez brothers have been asked to return to the squad."

The seriousness of the storm, which has already caused havoc in parts of the Caribbean, especially Cuba, led to State and City of Miami authorities ordering many emergency procedures, including the closing of the Orange Bowl.

Football / Small report
« on: July 07, 2005, 06:01:09 AM »
Well this was my first time seeing the Warriors in live action since the USA game.  Like most of the reports I've read, I was expecting better and was happy to come away from that match with a point.  Overall the first 25 mins or so were fairly even.  Should have been 1-0 up but Stern decided he didn't feel like troubling the scorers today and shot straight at the keeper from the top of the six yard box.  But a strange thing happened after Birchall scored a beauty from well outside the area, it looked as though we made an early substitution with BSC replacing Beenie Man on the sidelines and we seemed to lose our shape completely for the last 15 mins of the 1st half.  Our midfield was non-existent and we went to our infamous backs and forwards, boom kick formation.  It also was clear to me that we definitely don't practice free kicks in training because not only can we not score them, we can't even set up a proper wall to defend them.  Our entire team of ten men was in the wall or in the box and we still let the ball pass through - goalasso in we asso.  Honduras deserved to be level at that point though.  Our second half performance was better from a ball possession perspective but we didn't create nearly enough goal scoring chances.  We continued to send the ball up long for Stern and later Jones to head on but it wasn't working at all.  Beenie also pulled a BSC in the 2nd half by not using his third substitution and refusing to take off Stern when a hungry Glen must have been itching to have a run at the defense.  Here is my take on the players:

Keeper
Jack did what was asked of him and had a good game.  No chance on the goal, the wall let him down.

Defense
Honduras must have watched tapes of Cyd Gray's debut against Costa Rica because just like in that match they kept picking on him and the majority of their attacks came through his side doing the same play over and over.  I feel Beenie started Cyd to counteract the speed of the #13 left winger (Palos you were right in your report on this man he real dangerous) but speed alone can't make up for poor positioning and was giving him too much space.  Also he eat so much beat I figure he would come out of the match with a belly like Samuel, I just glad he didn't lose his head and get send off.  Lawrence look solid and made some good passes out of the back, even tried a couple forward runs but wasn't getting the return pass this rounds.  Dog struggled a bit, made some poor passes but luckily wasn't made to pay.  Looked good in the air and had a chance on a corner but headed wide.  Avery played ok I think, especially considering that Theobald wasn't helping at all.

Midfield
Birchall impressed me the most, had one or two bad passes but overall his control and touch was top notch, goal was fantastic and had a couple other attempts.  Whitely I think played a bit better than he showed against Mexico but still doesn't look anything like the best midfielder in the PFL.  Spann deserves a chance in his place.  Our wing play was simply pathetic.  Theobald should never set foot on the left side of a football pitch again, but even so I don't think being out of position was everything he seems out of form too - his touch is off and he letting ball pass under his foot to go out for throw and all kinda thing, not tracking back well either.  Rahim play shit first half not getting forward and letting the speedy honduran left winger #13 get behind him on every play.  He improved a bit at half time but still didn't show the ability to get behind the defense and send in any crosses like Edwards can.  Samuel in real life looked like he did in the pictures, but "hamburger" did play decent and made a great run, cutting accross the top of the box from the left and unleashing a bullet which the keeper did well to get a touch to and damaged himself in the process.  Not sure he can last a full 90 though.

Strikers
Not impressive at all. Besides the obvious sitter that Stern missed, we never really got into any good goal scoring positions.  Stern really looked out of form, out of shape and short on confidence in his ability to take on the defense.  At one stage in the 2nd half Stern had a chance to latch on to a through ball but the defender caught up to him like he was standing up.  Man in de stands start to bawl "Stern yuh handbrakes up".  Scotland showed some good control and nice passes but they were mostly back towards midfield instead of towards goal and he never really threatened the Honduras goal.  Expected more hunger from him.  Jones looked ok but had a couple of chances to make a run at the defenders and always seemed to stop and play back the ball to midfield as well.  I don't know what Glen did to piss Beenie off but something is not right there.  He definitely deserves a chance to show what he can do, why not give him a little 10 mins at the end?  He is the only one of our forwards in mid-season form and has the ability to take on defenders running at goal.  If he doesn't get a run against Panama then its clearly a personal issue the coach has with him.

Looking forward to Saturday - hopefully we will have some more support in the stands and we can pull off the victory against Panama to set ourselves up for a quarterfinal place.

Football / Ince to join John at Coventry City

Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Clayton Ince is poised to join League Championship club, Coventry City, after agreeing terms with the West Midlands outfit yesterday.
Ince is scheduled to sign a two-year deal from 10 a.m. today at the club's training ground before reporting for his first session with the "Sky Blues". The club and player hold an option for an additional year. He cannot wait to get started.
"They did not have to work hard to convince me," Ince told the Daily Express. "Coventry is a big club and everyone knows their history."
His move ends a six-year involvement with Wales-based Crewe Alexandra who he helped stave off relegation from the League Championship in the final game of the 2004/05 season. Ince hopes to finish much higher up the table this term and is excited to have joined a more ambitious club.
"It is a better financial deal for me," he said, "but I am more interested in the challenge. I want to see how good I can be."
For the first time, Ince will work with a full-time goalkeeping coach at Coventry as Crewe made do with a part-time employee. He also has a new stadium to look forward to, as the Sky Blues will soon move to Arena ground, which seats 32,000 fans.
Coventry had an average of 16,047 supporters at every match last season-more than double the Crewe following. Ince now joins compatriot Stern John at Coventry, although John is on international duty at present in Miami.
In other news, Sky Sport singled out ex-Portsmouth goalkeeper and Trinidad and Tobago international Shaka Hislop as one of the best free agents available in Britain.
Hislop, whose contract expired two months ago, was named as the reserve goalkeeper in a 16-man team that included former England internationals Ian Walker and Dion Dublin. Hislop is also on international duty but already received enquiries from several clubs.
Ipswich, who finished third in the League Championship last season, is the only team to publicly state their interest so far.
