Football / INCE AND SORVEL ON VERGE OF QUITTING ALEX
« on: June 30, 2005, 07:56:04 PM »
The Sentinel
BY GWYN GRIFFITHS
12:00 - 30 June 2005

Crewe's return to pre-season training today could be clouded by the departure of at least two of their out-of-contract stars. Clayton Ince and Neil Sorvel are believed to be close to signing deals away from the Alexandra Stadium.
And while Adie Moses will agree a one-year contract, fellow centre-half Colin Murdock's position is still unclear after he turned down his Crewe offer with little prospect of the terms being improved.
Alex manager Dario Gradi has demanded answers from the quartet by no later than today as he needs to draw up his travelling party for the club's Portuguese training camp, which departs on Sunday.
Coventry have been firming up their interest in Ince, who was told by the Alex manager earlier in the week there was no room for negotiation over his two-year contract offer.
Sky Blues boss Micky Adams is desperate to get a new goalkeeper on board before his side start pre-season.
Sorvel has attracted offers from lower league clubs and could be ready to end his six-year stay at Crewe by dropping down the divisions to secure a longer-term deal and regular first-team football.
Like Murdock and Moses, the midfielder was only offered terms for a year, but was also told he would no longer be a first-choice selection.
Moses, too, attracted interest from Leagues One and Two, but the 30-year-old says he is pleased to extend his Alex career.
"I had a couple of other offers on longer contracts, but Dario was quite positive and wanted me to stay," explained the defender.
"When I weighed it up, I like the area and I like the club. I had just been holding out for something a bit longer, but I have had a word with Dario and he has left it open for me.
As long as the offer is still open to me it is not a problem and I will sign at Crewe today."

Football / Birchall steps to Gold Cup call

Chris Birchall steps to Gold Cup call.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Trinidad and Tobago’s latest English recruit Chris Birchall arrived in Ft Lauderdale on Monday evening to join the rest of the National team in preparations for the coming CONCACAF Gold Cup eager to put on a good show in an international competition while his club teammates were getting set for preseason training in England.
The 21-year-old Birchall took up the invitation from head coach Leo Beenhakker  to join the team for the Gold Cup despite pleads from Port Vale manager Martin Foyle for him to sit it out in order to be fully energized for Vale in the upcoming season.
Foyle was earlier eager for Birchall to make his international debut leading up to the 2-0 win over Panama but is apparently not as pleased over his schedule with the “Warriors.”
“Chris has made his decision and decided to go, so there is no point getting angry about it. I hope he learns from the experience and can rest at the right time. I also hope they get knocked out of the Gold Cup early so he can come back,” Foyle said in the Sentinel newspaper on Monday.
Birchall however wasn’t the least fazed by the remarks from Foyle.
“It’s great to be back here with the boys because it’s like coming to a family again since I haven’t seen them since the game in Mexico. Coming out here is also a good experience for me because it’s the first time I’ll be playing out here in America and especially being involved in the Gold Cup is a big occasion for me,” Birchall told TTFF Media.
“We’re here to get things right again before the World Cup matches start back,” he added
Birchall arrived in Ft Lauderdale along with Shaka Hislop, Brent Rahim, Marvin Andrews, Kelvin Jack and  Dennis Lawrence while the rest of the team flew in from Trinidad earlier on Monday. Defender Brent Sancho was due in later in the evening while Luton Town midfielder Carlos Edwards arrives on Tuesday. Cornell Glen and Stern John also met the team at the hotel on Monday in time for the 5pm training session.
Beenhakker conducted a session at the training pitch located within the Hilton compound which was merely one to get the players to shake off the three-hour flight out of Piarco and the camp is expected to increase pace from Tuesday.
The Dutch-born coach has already indicated that his experience will have an impact on the preparation of the team and he will not back down to managers who think they can convince players from representing T&T.
On the days of training ahead, Beenhakker added “We have all the players we requested and that shows how much they want to play and get it right as a team. There might be some who may not like it, but for us, doing the right thing and having everyone showing that commitment is what is a plus for us.”

Kerron Clement ran the seventh-fastest 400 meters hurdles in history and Olympic 100 meters gold medallist Justin Gatlin completed a sprint double on the final day of action at the U.S. championships on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Clement, who broke Michael Johnson's indoor 400 meters world record in March, pulled away from Bershawn Jackson approaching the final hurdle to cross the line in 47.24 seconds.

The time was the fastest in the event in seven years.

"It was perfect," the Trinidad-born Clement said.

"It was the first time this year I didn't chop my steps."

Jackson finished second in 47.80 seconds and James Carter claimed third in 48.03 seconds in the meeting, which served as the American trials for August's world championships in Helsinki.

Gatlin clocked 20.04 seconds into a headwind to win the 200 meters and become the first man to complete the sprint double at the U.S. championships in 20 years.

"I want to continue to do the same thing in Helsinki," said Gatlin, who predicted a U.S. sweep in the event at the worlds.

Gatlin had won the 100 meters in 10.08 seconds on Saturday, one day after officials reinstated him in the event following his disqualification for a false start in the preliminaries.

Football / Costa Rica names Gold Cup Squad
« on: June 21, 2005, 08:17:37 PM »
Costa Rican national soccer coach Guimaraes named 21 players to compete in the Gold Cup but he did not include Paulo Wanchope.  Wanchope's absence has not yet been explained by the coach, but speculation in the press was that it was possible "Guima" wanted to get familiar with the performance of other players, since he already knows what the forward would be able to contribute.

Guimaraes has promised an "interesting" roster, and standing out on the list released on Tuesday by the Costa Rican Soccer Federation (Fedefut) on its Web page is the return of Moscow Lokomotiv forward Winston Parks.  Parks resigned from the Costa Rican national team while former coach Colombian Jorge Luis Pinto was in charge, but the latter was fired on April 1.

Some younger players also will have a chance to show what they can do, with Guimaraes naming three 21-year-olds to the roster: Saprissa defender Gabriel Badilla and his teammate at midfield Cristian Bolaños, as well as Alajuelense forward Bryan Ruiz.  Only 20 players will travel to the United States to play in the Gold Cup, and the final squad list will be made public within a couple of weeks.  In the first round of the tourney, Costa Rica will face the United States, Canada and Cuba.

Guimaraes had agreed with the coaches of the country's three main teams on Monday not to select more than five players per club to compete in the Gold Cup tourney next month.  He made a statement to that effect after meeting with Saprissa coach Hernan Medford, Alajuelense's Javier Delgado and Herediano's Guillerme Farinha, said Fedefut on its Web page.

"We had a meeting the way it should be. We're soccer people and therefore we came to an agreement easily. There was a very positive spirit at the meeting and, as the representative of the national team, I'm happy with what was agreed to," Guimaraes stated on the Fedefut Internet site.

The coaches agreed that Guimaraes would select five players from Saprissa and four each from Herediano and Alajuelense, as well as members of the other first division squads.  Former coach Pinto had come to an earlier agreement with the clubs not to select more than three players from each for the Gold Cup, a promise that Guimaraes said would be "very difficult" to keep.  Before the meeting with Guimaraes, the clubs did not want to contribute more than three players each because the Gold Cup competition takes place during the preseason period for the national season.

On the list are the following players:

Goalies: Alvaro Mesen, Jose Francisco Porras and Donny Grant.

Defenders: Harold Wallace, Michael Umaña, Victor Cordero, Mauricio Wright, Gabriel Badilla, Leonardo Gonzalez, Junior Diaz and Carlos Castro.

Midfielders: Jose Luis Lopez, Geiner Segura, Dany Fonseca, Douglas Sequeira, Christian Bolaños, Jafet Soto and Steven Bryce.

Forwards: Oscar Rojas, Winston Parks and Bryan Ruiz.

Football / Unbeaten W Connection face Jabloteh test
« on: June 18, 2005, 09:38:54 AM »
Trinidad Guardian
BY NIGEL SIMON

A rejuvenated CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh is out to end the 100 per cent record of VIBE CT 105 W Connection in today’s feature match of the T&T Professional Football League Senior Division.
The match takes place at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, from 6 pm.
Five of the league’s top scorers will be featured - the W Connection trio of Gefferson Goulart, Andre Toussaint and Earl Jean, and Jabloteh’s pair, Josh Johnson and Kerry Noray.
W Connection, nick-named the “Savonetta Boys”, leads the seven-team table with maximum 21 points from seven matches.
Coached by former national midfielder Reynold Carrington, W Connection has ten more points than today’s opponents.
So far this season, the teams have met twice with the score even.
W Connection pulled off a controversial 2-1 win in its league match, while Jabloteh had the last laugh when it won the Pro Bowl final 1-0, to to pocket $93,000 cash.
Noray scored the winner for Jabloteh in the Bowl final, and with his hat -trick against Defence Force( in a 7-0 win) took his season tally to five.
He should pose some problems for the W Connection defence, which has only conceded four goals in six matches.
Speedy winger, Josh Johnson, who tormented W Connection’s defence during the Bowl final, has been impressive all season for Jabloteh and leads its scorers with seven goals.
Coach Terry Fenwick will be looking to the two to continue their goalscoring as they go about cutting into W Connection lead.
W Connection also has a potent strike pair in Brazilian Goulart and Toussaint, who have netted seven goals each. However both players have run into a rough patch in recent matches and will need a return to form to make an impact.
Team captain St Lucian Jean has often taken up the slack when the attack failed, and has often has a knack for scoring against Jabloteh.
National Quarries North East Stars, the defending league champions, should have Jerren Nixon back when they journey to the sister-isle to face winless Tobago United at the Dwight Yorke Stadium from 6.30 pm while United Petrotrin hosts Defence Force at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, from 4pm in the day’s other matches.

If only...BSC was sacked long before the Hex start.  If Beenie was in charge we could have won/draw the US and beat Costa Rica.

If only...Ince didn't injure his brain back and desert the team before the Mexico match

If only...Shaka, Ince and Latas were as Trini to de Bone as Birchall

If only...Stern wasn't on the "King Jason Scotland" diet of Royal Castle and Royal Extra, he might have got a foot to that deflected Birchall shot before the keeper got there

If only...Yorke had scored on that clear header he flash past the post.  we woulda be 1-nil up and match would have been very different.  He would score that 7 times out of 10.  bad luck.

If only...Mexican customs officers were more strict.  They should have confiscated the left over Oildown dat Kelvin Jack's mother pack in he suitcase to buss up before de match.

If only...Panama and Guatemala didn't purge down de place and lose in the final minute of their matches against Costa Rica.  Costa Rica should only have 3 points right now.  2 if BSC wasn't there.

If only...my boss knew how much time I wasted on this forum de past 2 days.

Football / Mexico get the better of tenacious Warriors
« on: June 09, 2005, 05:25:08 AM »
TTFF News Online
09-Jun-2005

MONTERREY, Mexico : Mexico emerged with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago here as the final phase of 2006 World Cup qualifying for North and Central America and the Caribbean reached the halfway stage.
Goals from Jared Borgetti in the 65th minute and Luis Perez in the 89th secured the victory as Trinidad and Tobago's smothering defence failed to prevent Mexico from maintaining their place atop the standings in the six-nation final qualifying group.
Mexico are unbeaten with four victories and a draw in their first five matches, with five more remaining, and topped the table on 13 points.
In other matches Wednesday, the United States came away from Panama with a 3-0 victory for 12 points, and Costa Rica hosted Guatemala.
Trinidad and Tobago couldn't improve on their total of four points, suffering their third defeat against one victory and one draw.
But they surprised their hosts with their consistency - showing notable improvement under new coach Leo Beenhakker of the Netherlands.  They also created chances and had the partisan Mexican crowd miserable for long periods which is far form the norm for home qualifying matches for the Mexicans.
It wasn't until the second half that the stalemate was broken, after a sideline to sideline move between Perez and Ramon Morales finished with Borgetti pushing the ball over.
Perez nabbed the second goal in the game's closing moments, when he followed up on a block shot to beat goalie Kelvin Jack.

T&T kept things closer than expected. They used physical play that appeared to catch faster Mexico off-guard and good tactical work also kept them in the game for longer periods that expected.
Officials listed the game-time temperature at 99 degrees as both teams seem to tired out during parts of the match
Trinidad and Tobago responded with effective double-teams.
In the 39th minute, Jack left his net and the ball carried to Alberto Medina on a breakaway. But his shot from the left was knocked away by Avery John, who raced in to cover the open goal. John later injured himself as he fought on with the rest of the defense. In the first half midfielder Aurtis Whitley suffered a groin strain and had to be replaced by Brent Rahim in the second half. Rahim took his chance with intelligent play, hard tackling and good movement on the ball. He forced to 'keeper to pull off a great low save to deny his shot late in the game.
The scoreless first half drew catcalls from the near-capacity crowd at Estadio Universtario and things almost got worse for the home team when John nearly got a goal off a corner kick in the 59th minute, outjumping everyone in front of the net, but it flashed past the near post from a Chris Birchall right side free kick
The Mexicans went ahead in the 65th minute, when Perez sent a sideline-to-sideline pass ahead for Ramon Morales. His shot from the left was partially pushed out by  Jack but standing alone, Borgetti nudged the rebound home from point-blank range on the right.
Perez added a goal from the right side in the 88th minute, firing from just outside the penalty area, then taking the rebound off Atiba Charles and depositing it into the net.

Football / Ince says he’ll be back in T&T campaign
« on: June 08, 2005, 05:11:18 AM »
By Jovan Ravello
Trinidad Guardian

Goalkeeper Clayton Ince has denied reports that he tendered his resignation to team manager Bruce Aanensen following his exclusion from the senior national team that beat Panama 2-0 in their fourth round 2006 World Cup qualifier on Saturday.
Speaking on Monday, Ince explained that he had, in fact, expressed a need for some time away from the hectic schedule of national duty to treat with pressing personal issues.
Among these issues is a recurring back problem which flared up during the team’s five-day camp ahead of Saturday’s game and was one of the reasons listed by TTFF advisor Jack Warner and coach Leo Beenhakker for his failure to be in the starting eleven on Saturday.
Ince confessed to being disappointed at not being in the starting team but said he has not given up on rejoining the team.
The T&TFF yesterday confirmed that they had not received any resignation correspondence from Ince.
The T&T team, including Ince’s replacement, Durance Williams, arrived in Mexico at around 1 am (midnight T&T time) yesterday.
They travelled from Port-of-Spain via Miami and Dallas on Monday, ahead of today’s qualifier against Mexico.
They are based at the Sheraton Hotel in Monterrey where the match will be played.

« on: June 06, 2005, 09:42:21 PM »
In response to Warner’s comments Ince has said that despite his disappointment at being excluded from Saturday’s game he has in fact not resigned but has only asked for a break from national duty.

Ince said he had been suffering with back spasms and wanted time to take care of his ailment hence his request to not travel with the team to Mexico.

Football / New faces, old rivalries in New World showdowns
« on: June 03, 2005, 08:39:54 AM »
3 June 2005
by FIFAworldcup.com

The decks are cleared for action again in the North, Central America and Caribbean Zone after a two-month lay-off. With two new coaches in the mix and all to play for in an intriguing array of matches, the weekend's fixture list should be packed full of fireworks.
'New' boss Alexandre Guimaraes is back at the helm for his second stint in charge of a Costa Rica side who face the United States on Saturday. A member of the squad who reached the second round of Italy 90 on their final debut, the naturalised Brazilian is nothing short of a national hero. In addition, his penchant for upsetting the apple cart and pulling off the odd shock road win is sure to have a calming effect on understandably nervous fans back home.
After all, Guimaraes was minding the store when his Italy 1990 team-mate Hernan Medford handed Mexico their only ever qualifying loss at the virtually impregnable Azteca Stadium in 2001. Considering the Ticos have not won a match on US soil in over a decade, it will be hoped the new boss can pull off another surprise on the road in Salt Lake City, Utah. With only four points from their three matches so far, time is of the essence for the Central Americans with seven games to go.
The US have problems of their own to sort out. They were beaten by a below-strength England team in a friendly last weekend - the first home loss for Bruce Arena's men in 14 games stretching back to 2003. How quickly they can shake off that underwhelming performance and focus on the task at hand will be the crucial question for Landon Donovan and the gang when they take on Costa Rica in Mormon Country. One thing that should force a hint of a smile from the usually stone-faced Arena is the return of Eddie Johnson, the Americans' top scorer in qualifying, who was missing with a slight injury against the English in Chicago.

New boss number two
Costa Rica are not the only side pinning their hopes on a coaching change. Last-placed Trinidad and Tobago announced the appointment of fabled Dutchman Leo Beenhakker in late April after former boss Bertille St Clair could only manage one point from their three previous matches. Though he has had only limited time to try out new tactics and assess his players, it is hoped that the former Real Madrid, Ajax and Netherlands coach may inspire a Trinidadian turnaround. Goals from captain Dwight Yorke and Stern John – both barren in the final round – would certainly help the cause as well.
The Soca Warriors will not have an easy time against up-and-coming Panama, though. Once the doormats of the Central American sub-region, the Canaleros have blossomed under coach Jose 'Cheche' Hernandez. With two points from three games - and it could very easily have been five had it not been for some poor luck - the red-clad side are coming off a magnificent 1-1 home draw with group leaders Mexico that should have left confidence levels high. National team debutant Luis Tejada – who scored the crucial goal against El Tri – is beginning to come into his own and may well hold the key to a top-four finish for the Panamanians.

Mexico on the road
Led by the wily mind of Argentine Ricardo Lavolpe on the touchline and the 'Kaiser of Michoacan', Rafa Marquez, on the field, group leaders Mexico will be more than a little bit eager to get things right on the road against Guatemala.  Their last match – away to Panama – was one they should have won with ease. But a red card for Pavel Pardo and a brilliant overhead volley from Tejada forced the regional kingfishers to be content with just one point. The draw denied them a 100 per cent record at the close of their first three matches.
Also working against the Mexicans is the fact that Ramon 'El Primitivo' Maradiaga's Guatemala are a more coherent side than the fast-improving Panamanians. With top scorer and FC Dallas marksman Carlos Ruiz roving with intent up front, Marquez and Co are going to have their hands full as they look to return to winning ways.
The top three finishers from the six-team CONCACAF final group qualify directly for Germany 2006 while, for the first time, the fourth-placed team will take on an Asian competitor for a potential fourth berth at the finals.
Mexico are currently in first place with seven points, with the USA just one point back in second. Guatemala – level with Costa Rica on four points – are just about shading their neighbours on goal difference for third, while Panama and T&T are in fifth and sixth respectively.
Four days after their 4 June clashes, the CONCACAF sides will be back in action again with Mexico taking on Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica hosting Guatemala and the US travelling to Panama.

Football / Avery makes up with US teammate

By: Shaun Fuentes

Newspaper reports coming out of Boston has said that Avery John was in a bust up with New England Revolution teammate and United States national player, Clint Dempsey last month in a training session. The reports said that both men threw hands at each other and the club boss had to settle the dispute.
But John cleared the air on Tuesday, saying that the players patched things up after a small scuffle.
Dempsey was USA’s scorer in a 2-1 loss to England on the weekend.
“It was one of those things that happen at the heat of the moment in training. He thought I deliberately elbowed him and he swung at me before I backed away. There was some tugging, but it was not a big deal to say we have any differences. We were even out having a drink after the next game,” said John, who played 90 minutes in Revolution’s 0-0 draw with Colorado Rapids on Saturday.
“At the moment, it’s good for me to be back with the national team and things have gone well under the new coach and things could get heated here too, because everyone is really trying to make things work.  “We’re just really focused on getting the three points from Panama on Saturday.”

NATIONAL coach Leo Beenhakker has allowed Trinidad and Tobago footballers David Atiba Charles and Otis Seaton to play for their respective clubs in tonight's T&T Pro Bowl final, which could see the winners of the tournament walking away from the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, with as much as $100,000.
The final, scheduled to kick off at 8.15 p.m., is the second match of a double-header which includes Beenhakker's Trinidad and Tobago senior national team playing Bermuda for the second time in two days in the 6 p.m. opener.
Both midfielder Seaton and right-back Charles were involved for the entire match in Trinidad and Tobago's convincing 4-0 victory over the Bermudans on Wednesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Seaton, however, is likely to play a vastly different role tonight. Used by Beenhakker as a holding midfielder atop the T&T defence, 28-year-old Seaton is expected to figure in a much more attacking role for former champions CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh either in the middle or up front.
And Charles, who may very well pick up a contract in England in the coming season, will take his place in a well-oiled Vibe CT105 W. Connection back line.
Last year, the two T&T Pro League teams met in a very exciting final which ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw before W. Connection went on to take the title 3-0 on penalties in front of their excited fans.
This year, the clubs have played out a very close league match in which Jabloteh led all the way before two late goals gave W. Connection a come-from-behind 2-1 victory.
The 2005 T&T Pro Bowl has turned out to be the most lucrative-ever tournament in local football. Some of the success may have to do with the interest created due to the fact it is a winners-take-all competition.
Starting with a guaranteed $30,000 in prize money (courtesy Seven Seas and National Flour Mills) and a promise of a per centage of the gate receipts, the purse had swelled to $65,000 after the semi-final stage last week because of enthusiastic crowd support.
And the merger between football and entertainment seems to be working well, and once again patrons will be treated to performances from some of Trinidad and Tobago's top Soca artistes and will also benefit from several giveaways.
With the added attraction of seeing the Trinidad and Tobago national team play Bermuda in the opening game, all for a reasonable entrance fee of just $10 for admission to the uncovered stands and $20 to the covered stands, the T&T Pro League anticipate a sell-out audience which should push the overall prize money in the vicinity of $100,000.
So pleased are the T&T Pro League over the success of the tournament, they have decided to donate half of the gate receipts from the Pro Bowl final to Trinidad and Tobago's "Road To Germany" 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The Pro League will also issue season tickets to all current members of the Trinidad and Tobago national team, so they can enjoy professional football at their leisure.

Football / Warriors slaughter Bermuda

HAD Stern John not had such a terrible time in front of goal, Trinidad and Tobago's Warriors might well have walked away with a double-figure score from their friendly international against Bermuda at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Wednesday night.
Coventry City striker John probably had about half-dozen good chances to score, before converting the last goal in T&T's comfortable 4-0 victory which gave coach Leo Beenhakker his first win since taking control of the T&T national team on May 1.
The Dutchman has a chance to double his win tally today when the Warriors take on Bermuda for the second time in a 6 p.m. opening match of a double-header at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, which will also feature the T&T Pro Bowl final.
Beenhakker will be using the game to have a look at UK-based players Ian Cox, Brent Sancho and Marvin Andrews, who were all given a rest on Wednesday after their long trip from England.
Playing a 4-4-2 formation, Trinidad and Tobago had full control of Wednesday's match and maintained possession for long periods.
But because of the quality of the Bermudans, it's difficult to rate the improvement of the Warriors. Not that the Bermudans were not good individually, but they were never allowed to play as Beenhakker's Warriors kept the ball for sustained periods.
In goal, T&T keeper Clayton Ince was never threatened and made just one save when dropping low to grasp a speculative shot midway through the first half.
At the other end, Nigel Burgess was kept busy trying to keep out a couple of hot, long-range shots from Leslie "Tiger" Fitzpatrick in the T&T midfield.
But with the hosts controlling the midfield, it was the out-of-form John who had the most tries at punishing the Bermudans.
England-born 20-year-old Port Vale player Chris Birchall has been a terrific addition to the national team and, assuming a playmaker's role in midfield, forged a wonderful link with Carlos Edwards. On several occasions they combined well to split the Bermudan defence, creating chances for John, who skilfully flicked Edwards' low cross towards the Bermudan goal in the 14th minute, but only struck the body of keeper Burgess.
And after a forceful run down the right, Atiba Charles laid the ball on a platter for John in the 25th minute. Former national striker Philbert Jones was much maligned after a bad miss against the United States many years ago, but his folly would probably be now forgotten following John's spectacular scoop over the Bermudan goal.
Five minutes after the miss, Kenwyne Jones again set up John for another effort which John powered over the bar. Soon after, Edwards rolled another pass to John, but, before the striker could pounce, stopper Kentoine Alexander diverted the ball into his own net to give T&T the lead. John, T&T's most prolific striker for many years, continued to struggle and missed a couple more chances before the half ended.
But at the start of the second session, Jones showed no such uncertainty when pushing a square pass from Edwards into the penalty box and slipping Burgess to give T&T a 2-0 lead. John later had a shot cleared off the line, before T&T defender Dennis Lawrence stabbed in the ball from close in to make it 3-0 in the 51st.
John had another glaring miss when placing the ball wide of the Bermudan far post, before his limp chip from Birchall's pass finally bounced into the Bermudan goal to give T&T a 4-0 lead in the 64th minute.
Having only recently spoken of the "stick" he got from Coventry fans this season, John probably felt more of the same when he received a standing ovation after his goal as the applause seemed to reek more of sarcasm than praise.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- On the strength of Davy Arnaud's early second-half goal and a back line that rose to the occasion when needed, the Kansas City Wizards defeated the visiting MetroStars 1-0 Wednesday night for their third win on the season.
Arnaud finished off a neat passing movement after the Wizards converted a quick turnover for the game's only goal in the 48th minute and the Wizards defenders -- led by center back Jimmy Conrad -- kept the MetroStars from any consistent threat at the Kansas City goal.

The Wizards held most of the early possession, but wasted a large majority of it in long balls over the top that posed no threat or in attackers running offside -- which happened five times in the first half.
The best chance of the half came in the 19th minute when the Wizards gained a corner. Jose Burciaga Jr. sent in a deep cross that Conrad rose up to powerfully head on goal only to be denied on the goal line by MetroStars captain Amado Guevara, who acrobatically headed clear.

Each team had strikers get free at either end on solo breaks without success. Wizards rookie Scott Sealy picked up an Arnaud flick-on and rushed in on Zach Wells in the 24th minute, but rushed by a defender, Sealy fired well left of goal from 10 yards out.

The Metros countered with a John Wolyniec attempt from a purposeful ball over the top of the Kansas City defense. Wolyniec failed to make strong contact, but Conrad and a prone Bo Oshoniyi nearly flubbed the easy end to the threat as Oshoniyi bobbled the ball with Conrad stumbling near him.

Still with nothing to show for their five shots, the Wizards tried to again to snatch the lead in the 39th minute through a crafty combination of passes involving Klein, Sealy, and wide midfielder Alex Zotinca.  Running amidst the MetroStars defense in left midfield, Sealy fed a spinning pass that smartly reached Klein on the right side of the box. Klein held the ball before playing through two defenders to Zotinca, whose steamroller stretched Wells fully to his right for a two-handed save.
The breakthrough for the Wizards was soon found on the other side of halftime with a quick attack off a turnover just inside the MetroStars half. Klein drew the MetroStars defense to him, then fed Sasha Victorine who quickly squared for Arnaud to the right as Sealy played a wondreful dummy. Arnaud's left-footed shot snuck between Wells legs and into the back of the net in the 48th minute to give the Wizards the lead.

Although Wolyniec would threaten again as he latched onto a Guevara ball shortly thereafter, forcing a sprawling block from Oshoniyi, the Wizards continued to control the tempo of the match and to create chances and half-chances.

The MetroStars would not lie down on the night though and seemed to be ready to even the game in the 67th minute as Guevara found space running diagonally with the ball in midfield. The Honduran international delivered for Frenchman Youri Djorkaeff a close 10 yards off the far post, but again the Wizards goalkeeper threw out a leg to make a timely stop.

Surviving an Eddie Gaven cross that meandered across the Wizards' box in the 88th minute and a clumsy Shavar Thomas encounter with Djorkaeff in stoppage time, the Wizards held tight to the victory and a strong start to their two-game home stand that will continue when they host the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.

Football / Guimaraes out to revive Costa Rica
« on: May 26, 2005, 07:09:32 AM »
26 May 2005
by FIFAworldcup.com

With just four points from their last three qualifiers, Costa Rica will need to find their form, and fast, if they are to reach their second FIFA World Cup finals on the trot and their third since making an auspicious debut at Italy 1990.
They will no doubt be bolstered by the reappointment of Brazilian-born Alexandre Guimaraes – the coach who led them to the finals three years ago in Korea/Japan. The former Costa Rican international has been at the helm since predecessor Jorge Luis Pinto of Colombia was removed due to the team's poor form in the qualifiers for Germany 2006.

Guimaraes played his club football for San Jose's Deportivo Saprissa and lined up in Italy in 1990 for the Costa Rican side that shocked the world by reaching the second round of the FIFA World Cup finals. Though born in Brazil, the new boss is a symbol of an open and multi-national Costa Rica and keeps the Tico cause close to his heart.

"I want to see Costa Rica at the next World Cup," Guimaraes recently told FIFAworldcup.com. "To qualify for a second successive time would be marvellous, but there is a long and treacherous road ahead."

An ominous trip to Mormon country
First up for Guimaraes and his hopeful Ticos on their bumpy road is an away date with the United States on 4 June. Only one point off marauding Mexico in the six-team North, Central American and Caribbean Zone final group, the Americans – who have qualified for every finals since 1990 – will provide a stiff opening match for the Brazilian in Salt Lake City, Utah.

A win would be a first for Costa Rica on American soil since 1995, and could further cement the current coach's mythical status in the football-mad Central American country.

"We'll be up against one of the toughest sides in the group in a country where we haven't won for years," he said. "But I know how to stir (the players') pride. In the previous qualifiers we managed to win at the Azteca stadium, so it wouldn't be the first time they've pulled off an amazing feat. We need to draw on that experience for this game."

With much on his mind, Guimaraes will not have been overjoyed by the first friendly of his second stint in charge of the national side. On Tuesday against Norway at Oslo's Ullevaal stadium, the Costa Ricans looked a bit lethargic even with the iconic Paulo Wanchope in the team. The globetrotting veteran's early chance was the best the visitors would create and they went down 1-0 to a cool Frode Johnsen strike ten minutes from time.
Prior to Tuesday's match, all in attendance observed a moment of silence for the passing of Costa Rican striker Whayne Wilson, who died last week after complications following a car accident.

Also unavailable to the new boss will be Froylan Ledezma, recently handed a one-year playing ban by the Costa Rican Football Federation for 'abandoning the team' after being dropped by former boss Pinto for the qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago.

Signs of recovery
Since nearly suffering a shock elimination at the hands of Cuba in the preliminary rounds, Costa Rica looked to have got things back on track under Pinto in the second stage of qualifying. But since the final round started, the Central Americans have been woefully unable to locate anything resembling consistent form.

A historic and notorious loss to Mexico at home was followed up by an uncomfortable 2-1 win over Panama behind closed doors due to crowd trouble after the Mexico match. And the subsequent 0-0 draw with perennial strugglers Trinidad and Tobago proved the last straw for the fans who demanded Pinto's head.

With an arduous road ahead, Guimaraes knows that only the right kind of results will keep him from suffering a similar fate to that of his predecessor – beloved status or not. With a potential four spots at Germany 2006 available to the region's competitors, failure is not an option for the up-and-coming CONCACAF power. The top three finishers go directly to the finals, while the fourth will have to play off with an Asian side.

Brent Sancho leaves Dundee.
By: Lasana Liburd.

Trinidad and Tobago international defender Brent (aka "Bert") Sancho officially parted ways with relegated Scottish Premier League club, Dundee, yesterday and looks forward to a new start in Europe. Sancho, 28, becomes a free agent this month and the club's added financial problems brought on by relegation meant that manager Jim Duffy could not make a presentable offer. The Dundee board ruled that out of contract players must accept reduced terms, which spelt the end for the ex-CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh player who signed two years ago.
"The gaffer said that with a player of my calibre and ability," said Sancho, "it does not make sense disrespecting me with the kind of money he had to offer. He thinks I will get a chance to play at a better club or in a better league and he admitted that he had several enquiries about me already." Seven more players, including club legend Fabian Caballero, were not offered new deals while all staff members must take pay cuts.
However, Sancho told the Trinidad Express his phone was "ringing off the hook" and, although no firm offer was made, there were several enquiries, including a mysterious European suitor.  An agent informed the defender about interest from continental Europe but refused to divulge further details just yet. It is a commonplace trading tactic for freelance agents who often contact clubs on their own initiative to stoke up interest before speaking to the respective players. In the process, they help themselves to a finder's fee and commission from the club.  "I have been there before so I am not really worried," said Sancho, who also had stints in Finland and in the United States A' League.
He returns to Trinidad and Tobago today to join the national squad in training and insisted he was almost fully recovered from an ankle injury that nagged him over the past month.  "My ankle is still sore but I should be fine," he said. "I didn't have time to rest it but it is feeling alright, just a little sore. Some good sunshine and sea water and some of Dog's prayers should fix that."
Dundee and Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Kelvin Jack will join Sancho and new SPL champion, Glasgow Rangers' defender Marvin Andrews, on the flight home after being excused by Duffy.  Duffy was initially unwilling to risk the health of his goalkeeper who missed much of the season with a thigh injury but relented yesterday.  "He gave me his blessing but warned against pushing it too much," said Jack, who has one year left on his deal with Dundee. "He just wants me to come back fit for when the season starts."
While Sancho and Jack experienced the lows of relegation, the other half of Dundee brims with excitement at the prospect of this weekend's Scottish Cup final.  Trinidad and Tobago striker Jason Scotland bagged the goal that took Dundee United past Hibernian at Hampden Park in the semi-final stage and assured them of a place in next season's UEFA Cup. Scotland and teammate Collin Samuel should both feature in Saturday's Cup final before returning to Trinidad to join the national squad.

Football / Who will play against Lima next week?
« on: May 11, 2005, 08:45:16 AM »
So we have 22 foreign-based coming down to train next week.  And 17 locals that train this week.  My question is will Leo be using the Lima match to take a look at the foreign-based only?  Will the locals still be involved in training next week?  That's plenty people to train, evaluate, teach new tactics etc in 4 sessions.
He only had a look at 13 players in yesterday's match, how many will he get to see play next week?
Perhaps he should only use the foreign-based and split them into 2 teams and change the entire 11 at half-time.
Whatever happens we need to have the final squad of 18 set by the El Salvador match and use that as a full rehearsal for Panama

Whitley, Johnson star in 7-0 Jabloteh win.
By: Nigel Simon - Guardian.

Midfielders Aurtis Whitley and Josh Johnson netted doubles in leading CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh to a 7-0 pounding of Tobago United in the T&T Professional Football League’s Senior Division at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima, yesterday.
Whitley opened the scoring from a penalty in the second minute after striker Kerry Noray was bundled over in the danger area, Whitley made it 2-0 in the 15th minute. Noray extended the lead to 3-0 in the 30th minute to make his team more comfortable at half-time.
Two minutes into the second-half, Kerry Baptiste got the fourth goal for Jabloteh before Josh Johnson and Nigel Daniel added their names to the scoring list with goals in the 79th and 87th minutes respectively.
Johnson then got his second goal of the match and his fifth of the season to hand the Tobagonians a second straight 7-0 defeat. Tobago United was also beaten 7-0 by table-toppers VIBE CT 105 W Connection last week.
With the win, their second from six matches, Jabloteh improved to eight points—10 less than W Connection (18 points).
Champion side National Quarries North-East Stars won for the third time this season, scoring 3-1 over United Petrotrin on the Palo Seco Recreation Ground to join Caledonia AIA/Fire with ten points.
In yesterday’s late fixture, second-placed Caledonia AIA Fire (10 points) was due to come up against Defence Force at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, with a chance to cut W Connection’s lead to five points.
