Juan Roman Riquelme: An artist imprisoned in a world of athletes

Bastian Schweinsteiger had endured about all he could take. The German was the future. He’d win Champions Leagues and World Cups. He was technical, too, but combined his ability with strength and athleticism and was good at running fast. And here was this relic, waltzing around his German colleagues without even breaking sweat. It was time to put him in his place. To exterminate his kind.

Former Argentina, Boca, Barcelona, Villareal midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme retires

Former Argentina international Juan Roman Riquelme has retired from football at the age of 36.

The attacking midfielder was best known for his spells with Boca Juniors and Villareal but also played for Barcelona and, latterly, Argentinos Juniors, as well as making 51 appearances for his country.

He had been linked with a move to Major League Soccer but has instead decided to call time on a career during which he made almost 600 appearances and won a string of individual as well as club honours.

Arsenal starlet Gedion Zelalem receives US citizenship, plans on committing to American cause

As United States national team fans found out Monday evening, sometimes the best Christmas presents come late.

According to a report from the Washington Post‘s Steve Goff, 17-year-old Arsenal starlet Gedion Zelalem, who spent his formative years in Maryland before making the move to the English Premier League giants, has gained US citizenship and is now eligible to represent the United States in international competition.

Zelalem is also eligible to represent Germany and Ethiopia, but Goff cited sources who said the teenager has told friends and U.S. officials that he plans on committing to the American cause. He moved to the US at age nine before jumping across the pond at 16 to join the Gunners.
Should Zelalem receive FIFA approval, he would become one of the brightest young prospects in the American talent pool, with an opportunity to represent the US at the 2016 Olympic Games on the horizon as well as a looming introduction to Jurgen Klinsmann’s senior team.

Though he’s mostly played for Arsenal’s youth teams to go along with first-team cameos in the FA Cup and Champions League, Zelalem’s managed to build a reputation as one of the brightest attacking talents in Europe despite the lack of a league appearance.

That honor will come according to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who signed Zelalem to his first professional contract in March and says what the midfielder currently lacks in frame, he makes up for in technical ability and awareness.
“He is a player with a good eye and good technique and is very agile,” Wenger told SI.com in July. “He has the ambition to find the ball on the field. So he's the kind of player who could be of use to the United States. He's in some ways the type of player the U.S. was missing in the World Cup.”

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Zelalem will realize that vast potential, but after months of speculation about his international future, it seems US fans can rest easy knowing the talented teenager is set to wear red, white and blue.

You also need to go to the weight room and stiffen up for the blade runners in the MLS.

I'm sure the USL has its share of bruisers, too.

Orlando City's Kevin Molino making strong case in USL PRO ahead of MLS jump in 2015.
By JC Camahan (MLSSoccer.com).

While Orlando City have been preparing for their move to MLS by pursuing global stars such as recently acquired Brazilian legend Kaká and potential transfer Robinho, the club’s first MLS signee is having a breakout season in USL PRO.

Orlando City midfielder Kevin Molino hasn’t had a lot of time to ponder what the 2015 roster might look like while helping the Lions (14-0-4, 46 points) remain unbeaten by way of an offensive explosion unlike any in his career.

“As a player that’s already signed for MLS, you always wonder who will come in and who you’ll be playing with next year,” Molino told MLSsoccer.com last week. “It’s great to see that a couple big names want to come here. It shows we’ve been doing some good over the past couple years.”

Entering Sunday’s match at Rochester, Molino leads the league in points (29) and assists (7) and ranks third in goals with 11 in 17 appearances. He was the first of five players to sign an MLS deal with the club for 2015 after he was originally discovered in his native Trinidad by head coach Adrian Heath.

“There was this little skinny kid on the right wing who kept catching my eye every time the ball went to him,” Heath said of the 5-foot-11, 145-pound Molino. “We were fortunate that he was out of a contract and so we brought him in here, and he’s gradually gotten better by the week. Now I think he’s close to being nearly complete. He’s starting to put goals and more assists to his game.”

Said Molino of Heath: “He’s someone that’s helped me a lot on and off the field. He’s someone I have full respect for, and I’m just delightful to work with coaches like Adrian and [assistant coach] Ian Fuller. I’m just happy to be here and looking forward to going to Major League Soccer next year.”

Big step for Africa. For the first time in history they have more than one team beyond the group stage of the World Cup: Algeria and Nigeria.

Spain too, even though they had a good 3 years, they done.

Inaccurate and disingenuous.

1 World Cup and 2 European Championships are nothing to sneeze at. And the strength of their league had everything to do with that.

I will take 21 shots on goal against the US any day. (Not saying no work need to be done, but I can't discount what there).

Ghana took 21 shots, but only 3 were on goal.

USA took 8, putting 6 on goal.

Qatar World Cup: '£3m payments to officials' corruption claim

Fifa is facing fresh allegations of corruption over its controversial decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

The Sunday Times  has obtained millions of secret documents - emails, letters and bank transfers - which it alleges are proof that the disgraced Qatari football official Mohamed Bin Hammam made payments totalling US$5m (£3m) to football officials in return for their support for the Qatar bid.

Qatar 2022 and Bin Hammam have always strenuously denied the former Fifa vice-president actively lobbied on their behalf in the run-up to the vote in December 2010.

Blatter: awarding 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a mistake

Sepp Blatter has admitted it was "a mistake" to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar because of the extreme heat players will face in the Gulf state.

Speaking to Swiss channel RTS, the Fifa president said: "Of course, it was a mistake. You know, one makes a lot of mistakes in life.

"The technical report indicated clearly that it was too hot in summer, but despite that the executive committee decided with quite a big majority that the tournament would be in Qatar."

CONCACAF president says Gold Cup could move outside the USA

Could the CONCACAF Gold Cup be headed off of US soil?

It certainly appears that way after comments made by Jeffrey Webb on Friday in Mexico, where the CONCACAF president told media that he’s interested in spreading the biennial tournament around the region.

The United States has played at least a co-host role for every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991, including serving as the outright host each of the past five tournaments. The US and Mexico co-hosted the games 2003 and 1993.

14 reasons why the Qatar World Cup is going to be a disaster

The decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup was met with widespread skepticism.

Qatar's lack of infrastructure and soccer tradition, combined with questions about country's human rights record and bribery allegations, made it the most controversial World Cup host nation ever.

Nearly four years later, as the 2022 World Cup fast approaches, those initial questions haven't been answered. In fact, things seems to be getting worse.

Uncle Jack, The FBI and The Smoking Gun

Jack Warner is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

The Telegraph reports that they have seen some documents which are currently in the hands of the FBI – emails and bank records mostly – which prove that former CONCACAF President Jack Warner and his sons received more than two million dollars from Qatari interests in late 2010 and early 2011.

The story (hat tip to BigSoccer stalwart Placid Casual) says that the FBI has a “note” from Jamad (one of Warner’s companies) to Kemco (one of Bin Hammam’s) dated just two weeks after the vote which awarded World Cup 2022 to Qatar that requests a payment of $1.2 million be made “payable to Jack Warner” for unspecified “professional services”.

So who is Julian Green? Bayern stars Robben, Schweinsteiger offer endorsements

On the day after Julian Green dropped the big news that he has decided to play for the U.S. instead of Germany, Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger gave approving endorsements of the 18-year-old Bayern forward who may well become a member of the U.S. World Cup team in Brazil.

“He’s got great potential, so I think you can be happy about the fact he chose to play for the United States,” Robben told SI.com in an interview at Bayern’s training ground on Wednesday. “He’s a great talent. He already trained with [Bayern’s first team] several times, and you can see he has potential. He’s quick, he’s got very good dribbling and can score goals.”

Meanwhile, Schweinsteiger smiled when asked about Green.

Qatar World Cup toll: ‘Hundreds’ of Indian migrant workers dead in two years

More than 450 Indian migrant workers in Qatar have died in the last two years, media revealed on Monday. Another upcoming report will show that 400 Nepalese have lost their lives scrambling to get the Gulf state ready for the 2022 World cup.

At least 237 Indian migrants lost their lives in Qatar in 2012 and another 218 in 2013 up to December 5, AFP reported on Monday, citing figures received via a Right to Information request filed at the Indian embassy in Qatar.

'Qatar could lose 2022 World Cup'

A high-ranking FIFA employee has been quoted as telling the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that taking the 2022 World Cup away from Qatar is a “serious option.”

The employee, who was not named by the paper, said the final meeting of FIFA's Executive Committee this year would be decisive in determining whether it can take place in the Gulf state, adding: “That would allow enough time for the tournament to be reassigned.”

Just noticed him tonight playing for Sampdoria -- could Fernando Tissone actually be a black Argentine baller?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_Tissone

According to his Wiki entry and his personal webpage, Tissone (now playing for Malaga in Spain) has a maternal grandfather from Cape Verde. So that would seem to confirm my hypothesis that he is indeed an Afro-Argentine.

On another note was the keeper Baley of African descent?

According to the BBC's Tim Vickery, yes:

Quote
But there is still an African presence in Argentina's DNA. Hector Baley, for example, reserve goalkeeper in the 1978 World Cup, is an afro-descendent.
