Earlier this week, retiring Stoke striker Michael Owen had his car covered in eggs and flour by team-mates, with 28-year-old Jones tweeting a picture with the explanation that it was a "leaving present" for the former England star.

...another thing folks need to consider, I may be wrong and someone please correct me if I am, but it seems to me that that pitch was an artificial surface field, not so? I'm sure plenty will disagree but to me, playing football on a wet artificial surface is bordering on tactical suicide.   this (american based) obsession with converting every field into a cost-cutting venture is going to ruin people's careers but on the issue at hand, it is, IMHO, even more reason the game should not have continued, even if AR allowed themselves to agree to getting it started in the first place.  I was not letting my team play on that field especially in them conditions.

No, it is grass:

And which is the one team that will be hosting qualifiers on an artificial surface in this Hexagonal? That's right: Costa Rica.

thanks for the confirmation, those players didn't seem to be having the footing you would have on (snow-covered) natural grass, however,: Which country unnecessarily plays most of its domestic league games on artificial surfaces? that's right: USA. Now,
STFU!

C'mon, don't be angry! I only corrected you because you asked "please"!  ;D

You sure about that? CR Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica (new Stadium) is grass.

The new stadium is grass. However, they announced that they would play some of their home qualifiers at Saprissa, which has an artificial surface.

Denver was chosen so we could prepare at altitude for Mexico.

Saying the weather worked to our advantage? Well, show me a team in the region that doesn't try to get any advantage they can from their own climate. Or altitude, or blistering heat, or tropical rain, or intimidating crowds, or poor playing surface, etc...

Welcome to CONCACAF.

Some of you guys are f**king pathetic...

Is it not the right of USA to play their HOME game wherever they feel it may benefit them best ? If they play in a warm state / anything south across America odds are the stadium would be half Costa Rican Immigrants therefore losing the 12th man

Why none of allyuh complain about Azteca and never say Mexico desperate when they make teams play above sea level and they cant breathe ?

Dont let your true emotions towards the country USA overshadow common sense and football... its simply home advantage and it f**king worked..3 points

Nick DeLeon declines T&T call-up

Nick DeLeon has never been to Trinidad & Tobago, the Caribbean nation where his father is revered and his younger sister has played for the junior national teams. The D.C. United winger was born and raised near Phoenix, idolized American players and longed to someday represent the United States on a big stage.

So late last week, when the Trinidadian federation unexpectedly invited him to camp ahead of a Feb. 6 friendly against Peru, he declined. For now, his mind is set on someday playing for the U.S. squad.

“I grew up here and it’s always been my dream to play here,” DeLeon, 22, told the Insider. “It felt pretty good to get invited, to be honest. It’s a big honor. But I don’t think it’s the right time.”

I expect

1. Mexico
2. Costa Rica
3. USA
3.5 South America team.

The team that finishes in 4th place in the Hexagonal will go into a play-off against the winner of Oceana (not a South American team).

USA should have scored 4 and still they looked ordinary, USA is very beatable at the moment, they are shaky.

It's true that we have looked shaky lately, but that's all down to Klinsmann continuing with the same clueless midfield choices.

Once he pulls his head out of his ass and stops repeating them -- which should hopefully happen soon since he saw how good Williams looked in his natural role in the center -- then the team will look solid.

Bradley and Donovan returning are going to give us a boost as well. And we've got a couple of young wide players in the pipeline who could soon end up tearing things up in this region.

Roma signs Michael Bradley

Roma has completed the signing of U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley from Chievo Verona.

The club confirmed the deal Sunday and said it paid Chievo $4.6 million plus a 50 percent share in Romanian youngster Adrian Stoian.

Bradley has already joined his new teammates at their training camp in Riscone di Brunico.

The 24-year-old American had an impressive season with Chievo last season after moving from Borussia Monchengladbach. He spent the first half of 2011 on loan at Aston Villa.

Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldinho loses lucrative Coca-Cola sponsorship deal ... for sipping a Pepsi

Ronaldinho just couldn't resist the Pepsi Challenge.

On Monday, soft-drink kingpin Coca-Cola terminated its lucrative sponsorship deal with the man who was once considered the best soccer player in the world. The soda giant was enraged that the 32-year-old Brazilian took a sip from a can of archrival Pepsi at a recent news conference hyping a game with Atletico Mineiro, a club in Ronaldinho's homeland which he joined in early June.

Two cans of Pepsi were right in front of the midfielder at the news conference, and the former Barcelona superstar couldn't wait to quench his thirst.

The two-time FIFA World Player of the Year was earning $750,000 a year from the endorsement deal. But his cardinal sin ends the relationship that was set to run until 2014.

Loved and attacked, Balotelli divides. But he's not conquering (yet)

Children here in Poland love Mario Balotelli. It must be the Premier League matches they see on television, or the child-like atmosphere, given all the students from elementary and middle school in Krakow present for training at the Municipal Stadium on Wednesday evening, who called his name from start to finish. It was quickly understood, once the Azzurri's flight landed in Krakow from Pisa, fresh from Coverciano: the children of the welcoming delegation at the airport all chanted his name: "Ma-rio, Ma-rio".

Everyone is talking about Balotelli in regard to the national team. Except that Mario is not always so successful in receiving verbal accolades. And journalists aren't the only ones to knock him for his behaviour on and off the pitch. It comes from his team-mates as well, on a regular basis and in thinly veiled tones. The latest jab came from De Rossi at the Azzurri's camp. Then from Thiago Motta and Marchisio. Followed by the lecture from Prandelli.

Bring back the golden goal.

It should be used during the two 15-minute periods of extra time: if a team scores during that time then game over, they win. If no one scores then so be it, and it goes to PKs.

But after 90 minutes of regular time one goal should settle the entire thing. It rewards attacking football and reduces the possibilities of going to a shootout.

Crew get experience they need in Birchall signing

Foremost among the reasons for signing former LA Galaxy midfielder Chris Birchall to a multi-year contract on Monday is the Columbus Crew’s 2-4-2 record.

The numbers tell the story for a side that’s struggling through a crater full of injuries, forcing Robert Warzycha to rely on young players who are still learning about the speed of the game at the professional level.

“He is a quality player who has experience,” Warzycha said on Monday. “If you want to close the game or score in the end, you need experience on the field. Sometimes with so many young players we don’t have it, especially with all the injuries. You can’t always put so many things on their shoulders.”

DeLeon heads freshman class

D.C. United's Nick DeLeon is making a strong case early on for MLS Rookie of the Year. In a standout class of young attackers, the son of former Trinidad & Tobago international and NASL star Leroy DeLeon was only taken with the No. 7 pick, but he has been sensational for D.C. United, scoring three goals and adding two assists.

With his weaker foot, too.

Also interesting because the left flank had been Chris Pontius' position, but he was out injured with a broken leg so it freed up the spot for DeLeon. Now Pontius is back and has been moved to forward, where you saw what he did last night. And DeLeon has been excellent on the flank with assists and goals. It's all fallen into place for DC in that regard.

Arena has several questions to answer regarding his midfield.
