Good, tight game. WBA gave pool a run for their money. Despite that 'Pool found a way to win. Sterling was slightly off touch today, but he made up for it by hustle and deceptiveness. he is a gem. Llanana's had a boss goal. Sessignon and Beraninho were fantastic for WBA. Good football.

Lallana and Hendo were Men of the Match for Liverpool.  Sterling needs rest in the worst way... Sturridge might be back next week, so good opportunity to turn the reigns over to Coutinho a little, maybe bring Sterling off the bench.  Berahino was an absolute terror for WBA, although the ref gifted him that goal on a ghost penalty.

Been watching this youth since last season.  He will be snapped up by a bigger club soon.  Surprised that with the dearth of top-class strikers for England, that he hasn't yet received a senior team call-up.

Rodgers working Sterling like ah leggo beast.  Sterling should not have played 90 mins yesterday.  He is going to burn the fella out.  Good to see Lallana finding his feet, after not having a preseason.  He will be crucial for this season.  Men like Markovic need to get it going; he is young and is in a new league and country, but he gotta let that potential flow.

I also think it's probably common language. I also think all these work permits rules are to keep the sport in England from becoming dominated by black foreigners. They aren't there fussing about other Europeans or Argentinians. Its the Africans, West Indians etc they don't want.

Don't quite agree with your argument.  While permit issuance can come over as a somewhat subjective decision, it is heavily based on the caliber of the player, in terms of how many international caps he has, as well as the Fifa ranking of his national team.  You're a bit over the top here.

Didn't see him against Cuba, but from what I saw from him with the U17s, he seems technically solid:good range on crosses, excellent shot stopper, and really good at coming off his line in 1v1 situations; also good with his feet.  He might be a bit undersized, relative to the modern day GK attributes, but so to is Nick Rimando for the U.S., and he excels in the MLS and U.S. national team.

They're a much more organized unit than us, and their World Cup experience may very well have increased their confidence.  They don't have high profile players, with the exception of Navas at Madrid.

Along with some of the stuff that took place against Tottenham (under Phil Dowd's watch), there seems to be little doubt as to what the strategy of some of these mid- and lower-tier teams appear to be when it comes to dealing with Balotelli.

Say what you want about tactics and getting one up on your opponent:  kicking a man in the open field no where close to the action is not football.  That is not the spirit of the game and I won't be surprised if the FA disciplinary committee takes action after review the footage. Balo might have his ways, but the treatment meted out to him on Saturday was uncalled for.

Lol...nah, meh head was focusing on the four that made the World Cup.  Then, I took Honduras out of that group because they are inconsistent, and their talent pool seems to have dropped off a bit.

Right now we are way behind these four in Concacaf, in terms of talent pool and player representation in Europe:  USA, Mexico, and Costa Rica.  The fourth spot is up for grabs.

It's interesting to compare the Board philosophy regarding managers at Liverpool and Man U.

While Rodgers took a lot of flak in his first season, he appears now to be in full control of the club. Meanwhile, Man U continue to demand instant success, which is very rare these days. Ironically, most clubs appreciated the amount of time Sir Alex took to get fully settled and realise that it's not wise to expect success in year one.

It would do Man U well to look back at the history behind their last 25 years of success.

Kudos to the LFC board, not only for their vision in selecting Rodgers, but also continuing to fund his team building and supporting him through the rough times early on.

Wouldn't say full control, but he definitely has more weight now, with the new contract he has negotiated.  Transfers are still done on a committee basis, but I think he has the last say on who comes and goes.

Premier League: 10 Talking Points (UK Guardian)

3) Liverpool show they have spent windfall wisely

What a pleasure it must be for new players to join this Liverpool squad. They have to work hard, sure, and competition for places is increasingly high but, if they embrace the challenge, the rewards could be wonderful. When they play as they did for much of last season and again at White Hart Lane on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers’ team are exhilarating to watch and, for any player with a wholesome attitude, fun to be a part of.

The early signs are that Liverpool have spent the Luis Suárez windfall wisely, as each of this summer’s recruits looks a worthy addition. It was suggested in the summer that Liverpool were destined to endure the sort of stuttering campaign that Tottenham Hotspur suffered after last season replacing Gareth Bale with several new signings but that was always a flawed comparison: because Liverpool is fertile ground in which to plant new players as, unlike Spurs last term, they are a club with cohesion and a vision. And they are gathering momentum.

Spent wisely and avoided the last minute rounds of panic negotiating.

Brendan Rodgers looks for a certain type of player, and if they don't fit the mould, they won't come.

346000 pounds a week on a loan player... A striker... With unproven fitness after an ACL injury... And a glaring midfield problem which would impact service to said striker.

Colour me skeptical. I hear Blind signed too. Preferred Carvalho.. But such is life. The finance picture eh so promising right now if this gamble doesn't work out.

Man U displaying the heights of desperation with that Falcao loan signing.  That is not where they really need to strengthen.  That new chairman, Woodward, is a proper waste of time.  He is horrible at dealing with transfers.

I think Roma can be a tricky trip for City. Bayern goes without saying and they should beat CSKA with no worries. Liverpool get ah "welcome to the Champions League draw" and Chelsea keep paying ppl off to get easy draws...just kidding.

Only one team that is really superior to us in that group and that is Real Madrid.  Basel are never pushovers, but I expect to get 4 points from them.  We should come out of that group.

Agreed....Man City gotta be real sharp to come out of that group.  Some tricky ties there.

These are the people that they put into administration in Trinidad.  Anyone surprised of the direction that country is headed?  Book sense and a lack of pragmatism and lack of controls is the norm down there.

Everywhere you look it's friends appointing friends and family. To be fair, I don't blame the board members, I blame the people who appointed them. Then again, I'm not sure who could be appointed to the board who has the necessary qualifications as well as political neutrality. We need to rethink the appointment to boards of public companies.

I guess every country has ambassadors and board chairmen who are selected because they assisted the ruling party in some way, but the actual board should be appointed on merit.

Problem is the cleaning house that occurs on the changing of regimes.  I could understand bringing in some key strategic heads, but the purging is unnecessary, and really wreaks of nepotism and cronyism.  It leads to a lack of continuity of initiatives and wastage, as projects are abandoned while in process.  That country just luck it has a little oil.
