Football / Re: Thread for the Joe Public vs Santos Laguna (18-Aug-2010).
« on: August 18, 2010, 06:23:49 PM »
I just witnessed one of the worst moments in goalkeeping for a professional. WOW!!!

The local players are not the most tactically astute players and that is compounded by their poor workrate. When the ball goes past them they just shutdown. If this is the best we have in Trini then we are in an absolute mess.

#8 for Joe Public is not very good defensively and he is a holding midfielder.

Arshavin looking poor and we still want to walk the ball in the net like is small goal.

Men hadda start piping bullet from outside.

Not convinced with Chamak, apart from looking like he have mange, I ent seeing no "specialness" bout him
I hear you but I think Chamak's value is in the goal that scored. We had nobody before that would even make that challenge on the the goalkeeper.

It was the first game and at Anfield no less, one of the toughest places to play. We definitely need a keeper and more defensive cover. The one moment that made me think Koscielny has something was when he beat Torres in a one on one situation. I've seen most defenders, Rio Ferdinand especially, lose that battle. Ok maybe Torres is not fully fit but it bodes well for Koscielny's confidence.

I'm not too upset because i'd rather our flaws be exposed now and AW's hand be forced than us starting with an emphatic victory and delusionally believing that we are good enough to win with our current squad.

All in all, I think this weekend would actually be good for our season ahead.

Did you know about Obama before 2007?

No I did not....how does this topic solve the problem of getting the people who have the power to vote in a new administration at the TTFF to do so??.... :waiting: :waiting:
If you just dismiss yourself as an option before you start then you never have a chance.

For the first time of my lifetime, as far as I can remember, we have a real opportunity for change. We have to find a way.

coops /i agree with you 100% !!!! same way alibey could plant brathwaite name in the press, flex and tallman could easily do interviews with the whole national team, past and present and have some names out there.  shaka, sancho, skeene, nakhid...i find allyuh throw some real good names in that hat.  the only way to have any hope of change is to seize the chance to bring these names up in the media: including talkshows etc.  what yuh say yourstruly? this is a big scoop, interview some players.

Right Kounty I glad you agree with Coop's....now let's hear HOW the names that are submitted will be voted for by the people WHO CAN VOTE??....

I was supporting Latas as the coach but it seems that he doesn't get it. We are not so great offensively that we can win without playing defense. It seems that he doesn't get it. Thus far he hasn't called Birchall or Julius James and they can both help us defensively. I also saw Primus and he is probably already our best defender. He is big, strong, good on the ball and he reads the game well. Plus he has more international experience than these fools he has playing. I say go to the defenders from the U-23 team. The played well, dare I say on an international level at the U-20 WC.

Latas said before the game that he wanted to see if we progressed tactically but it seems that we have regressed. He has a lot to answer for, and in fact I would have no qualms if he lost his job as a result of this performance.

I hate to assume that a) the author is American; and that b) he subsequently knows nothing of the sport... but that said, I find that his treatment of the two is somewhat superficial.  Seemingly he cobbled together profiles of the two from news headlines, rather than from any in-depth research into the particulars.  For instance, he paints Pele as the grinning company man, and Maradona as the caricatured bad boy, Yin to Pele's Yang.  The whole "twinning" thing is farcical since unlike the other famous pairs of athletes/rivals mentioned, these two were never contemporaries.

Truth is often stranger than fiction it is said, and reality is often a great deal more nuanced than our imagination allows.  Pele came of age when the responsibility of an entire race was thrust upon him, not just Afro-Brazilians, but the millions throughout the African diaspora looked up to him and my guess (without more) is that this is what helped keep him on the straight and narrow path.  He was football's first global superstar and the responsibility sat comfortably on his shoulders because he embraced the role of the sport's global ambassador... indeed he revelled in the opportunity to promote sport as the great unifier of peoples.  In fact he revelled in any opportunity to push sport, especially football as a vehicle for improving the lives of others, see his turn as Brazilian Minister of Sport in the mid-nineties.

Compare that to Maradona, who came of age in the hedonistic, me-first decade of the 80s.  That period was all about self-indulgence and excess, extravagance and decadence.  For a young superstar flush with money all the trappings of fame were there, as well as the pitfalls, money, women and drugs.  Maradona was never a sophisticate and like many young professional athletes in that decade he fell victim to the many temptations which came his way.  Not to absolve him from blame, far from it... just to show that both men were products of their times and their environments... while acknowledging that personality/nurture had a huge role as well.  Maradona famously demonstrated that he was willing to win at any cost, whatever the moral price to be paid.  It is understandable why he would bridle at having to play second-fiddle to Pele... for him it's always been about Diego... always about Ego.

I imagine that some of the more experienced heads may have more to add on the matter... particularly men like Observer having seen more of the two than most here, and Asylumseeker, given his continued defense of Maradona.  For me though there is only one 'Greatest', and even admitting my bias against the short, fat, cheating bastard... that unquestionably has to be Pele.
I applaud your prose and I also applaud your acknowledgement of your bias.

...No shrewd businessman overpays for anything and they are way overpaying for the value they are getting in return.

Many shrewd businessmen routinely "overpay" for potential and Mansour is essentially in the position of a venture capitalist where City is concerned.
There is value in potential.

My point is that including potential, they are overpaying for Toure just as the overpaid for Lescott. Venture Capitalist or not, I think it is a stupid business decision. I don't think Mansour is actually approaching this as a business but rather as a plaything. That's the only way to justify so many bad financial decisions.

Football / Re: £221,000 a week?
« on: July 15, 2010, 06:08:35 PM »
This is not about controlling his earnings. I have no problem with him getting as much as they want to pay.

From a footballing perspective, Man City is way overpaying for him. He is not really a 'Franchise' player so to make him the highest earner on the team, far less the league is stupid.

It also makes no sense from a business perspective. No shrewd businessman overpays for anything and they are way overpaying for the value they are getting in return.

Ivory Coast is like the African teams we have seen historically. Very talented but disorganized. Furthermore, they picked a weak coach who also doesn't have enough time to prepare.

How Mara going and accommodate that Argentina frontline:  Messi, Tevez, Milito, Aguero, Palermo?  He alone knows....good luck with that selection.  I would say Milito is the best target man out of the lot, and Messi will sit in behind the front two.
Actually the most important player for Argentina likely will be Mascherano. He is the captain and if they can defend well, they will always have a chance. If Diego is smart he will carry Cambiasso also and sit those two behind their awesome attack.
You didn't even mention Higuain and Di Maria.
Having said all that.....I am not an Argentina fan.

« on: May 19, 2010, 06:28:26 PM »
Shaka repping with he TRI shirt...he is slowly becoming a household name in soccer commentary / analysis.  I think analysis is his strength, so he would be a good parnter to someone who calls the game, but doesn't have the acument to analyse a match properly.

You don't think?    When you listen to him in-studio I find his analysis is sound. When you listen to his interviews his insight and analysis of both on-field and off-field issues are on point.  Where he has faltered (in his one big opportunity thus far) was providing analysis in-game... real time on the fly analysis.  Some people are natural speakers and some are not.  I personally think he falls in the latter.  I think because of the breadth of his professional experience he's become comfortable with the publicity that accompanies professional success and so has become comfortable with speaking in that spotlight.

He showed more than a bit of nerves when thrust before the camera as the game was about to unfold last year April and ESPN hasn't trusted him since.  I think what they need to do is farm him out to do some lower-profile college games to help him hone his craft, get him in front of the camera as much as possible otherwise and then I think we'll start to see a different product in front of the camera.  I think he has the knowledge, personality and ability to be a good analyst, and for me that's all the "acumen" one needs.
Actually he has been doing live color commentry on ESPN. We don't see it because it's on the international market. I noticed that he was on a few games while I was in Trini.
I actually asked him about it and he confirmed that has been doing games but they have been in the Latin American market.

Arshavin: Joining Barca would be 'peak of career'

http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/premierleague/story/Arshavin-eyes-Barcalona-switch

Arsenal striker Andrei Arshavin wants to play for Barcelona, saying it would be the highlight of his career.

Before Arshavin joined Arsenal in February 2007, Zenit St. Petersburg rejected a lower offer from Barcelona, to the Russia international's frustration.

Arshavin played in the first leg but was injured for the second when Arsenal was knocked out by Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals earlier this month.

"In case I have an opportunity to play one season in Barcelona, it would be the peak of my career," Arshavin was quoted as telling the English-language website of Russian newspaper Sport Express.

"After Arsenal played with Barca in the Champions League, my feeling of excitement changed to (a) feeling of dissatisfaction because Spanish club has become much stronger than any other club."

The 28-year-old Arshavin said he would prefer to finish his career back in the Russian league rather than playing for an English team that isn't challenging for the title.

"If someday I will have to choose between middle English club and (a) leading Russian championship (team), I would prefer to return to Russia," he said.

Arshavin's second season at Arsenal will end without a trophy. The Gunners are third in the Premier League they haven't won since 2004.

I doh kno bout dis Mikel thing nah.  I honestly have never been impressed by him.  I think he is solid but I doh see any offensive intuition in him.

Same here.. If anything i could see him move a lil further up and get involved in more of the creative play like how he looks for Nigeria.. But outside of his CDM role, never really see him pipe on from distance or thread a bess ball.. Essien is the man that could easily operate in attacking midfield though.. He could probably play anywhere, goalkeeper and all..

Mikel still plenty better than Song though.

I was just reading quietly until you threw this bait.

Anyway, I was really conflicted about 'if not us then who?' I decided that as much as I dislike the buy a championship mentality of Chelsea, I would rather you win the PL title.

Like someone else said, please prevent SAF from winning the title with one of his shittiest teams ever!!!

all the haters come out to gloat but is all good, the squad just not good enough.   is ok though i not really disappointed b/c i knew better than to get my hopes too high.   on to the summer, hopefully the squad gets strengthened in key areas and certain players get shown the door (silvestre should be thrown out the door).

Yeah . . i am not that disappointed except for the fact that it was spurs we loss against . . . is arsenal own fault for not winning that game. . . and even though we did not win silverware this season. . i think that the overall season was a success because arsenal show remarkable improvements from last year . . . where we were strugglin to hang on to fourth. . this time we were potential title winners with a realistic chance. . and although they still show their immaturity some times .. . they show good spirit this season and good fight. . and for this team to be so close to the top even though we were injury plagued this season. . showed that this team have good talent and good spirit. . . wenger will definately buy this summer . .with chamakh tentatively confirmed already i see he lookin for strike options (as well as balotelli) . . there is talk he want to sign caceres from barca. . so he lookin at defenders  too .. and i read a while back that he was interested in hazard which i thought he would be as he is a young talent. . .but i think he should get a really good holding midfielder along with the strikers and defenders. . just get more depth in those areas . . . i am not disaapointed from this seasons results. . but having said that ... . . i am expecting big big things next season . .

I applaud LP for putting it all out there.

At the least it is just different viewpoints of how to achieve the same goals.

At it's worst it is competing agendas.

Worst case scenerio who do you trust more LP/Latas or Fenwick, who couldn't make it in big leagues. Foreigner come to Trini and take advantage of some disoranized people an now they think he worthy of praise. I'd at least like to hear Fenwick state is vision for our football on a macro and micro level.
