hear nah...if its one day i staying in this thread just to hear the responses is today.
good thread problems

I LOVE meh trini slang/diaglect. But my diction is not as STRONG and RAW as some others.  I will not speak it or write it in my line of work.

I strongly believe there is a time and place for everything, and I can't see me speaking in my "native" tongue: "boy bring ya ass here nah" to meh peers or bosses.
I don't know how others "outside" trinis feel about this

meh 3 cents

Wha yuh sayin!...yuh cah speak yuh native tongue and not curse?

yes i can...can you, can others ?
but my native tongue is english eh.

go to an interview for a job and speak your 'native' tongue, and let me know the outcome of it
a simple phrase "steups, hear nah" to be said in front of your potiental boss ??

Of course you will have to speak the English language in a country that has English as their main language..That does not relate to this topic!!....I am talking bout our native tongue should be acknowledged as a language..and should be used exclusively in T&T...some Trinis livin in denial and sayin we native tongue is de same as de English language!!..

The authorities in Trini need to classify we language as we main language and de media should start publishing in we Trini language...we so quick to follow de English or American systems..Why cant we develop we own system?

92
I fully agree.....there is french, german, and many other languages, so I think we should have a TnT language.
but will only be used in TnT obviously....my polish buddy doh spek polish to me here in canada.....

...someone should print ah Trinbagonian dictionary...
We already have a dictionary:
Cote ce Cote la: Trinidad & Tobago Dictionary by John Mendes
I say that it should also be in the form of any other dictionary like the Oxford dictionary wherein Each citation has the following elements:
the word itself
an example of the word used in context
bibliographic information about the source from which the word and example were taken.
In other words Etymology

Thank you!!..That's all I'm saying...Of course we cah speak we language to foreigners on foreign soil (because its difficult for dem to understand we language)..yuh doh see Haitians speaking french to their american employers at their jobs in the U.S!!...Trinidad and Tobago should acknowlege our native tongue as ah sperate language and it should be used exclusively at home

I don't think the use of slang warrants a formal recognition of a new language.  Do you think it is more than just slang...like the constructs of the language?

Do you think people in Liverpool should have their own language?  I not being facetious, what about Antigua, Barbados, Grenada..... I'll concede JA

We native tongue is nuh slang....It have slang words used within we language...We native tongue is ah complete different languge to English...
When a foreigner ask yuh what is de standard language in yuh country..wha yuh say?....It cah be English!!

95
I believe we Trinbagonians should acknowlege our Trini language as ah standard and seperate language (like spanish, English, French..etc)...Ah doh believe we language is English and people who keep on sayin dat eh facing reality...Haiti language is rooted from french but their authorities has classified it as ah sperate standard language because its not French..Ah lot of Trini words are not rooted from de English language....I do believe English should be taught in schools like Spanish because in dis day and age its beneficial to be bi-lingual.....De local media should start printin in we native tongue and someone should print ah Trinbagonian dictionary......Our language is one of de main tings dat seperate we from de rest of de world and something we should cherish and be proud about....wat is allyuh opinion?

Hmmm its obvious some people having something personal against Machel....The man just saying he had nothing to do with the incident but some people see it as "he trying to take he name off de heat"...*shakes head*...Now if he is guilty I believe he should do the Time..but I will not jump to conclusions...Now I can bet my last dollar the Trinbagonians who are fast to attack Machel before looking at the issue on both sides are around the age of 40 and older....Alot of the older generations did not like the way the man sing and therefore think they now find a reason to attack the man...Now am going to listen to his song "what they say dey say"

Yung Joc, Lion Dread and Mr. Vegas
Shadow and Crazy at Carnival village

~ For Cultural Blend Showdown ~
PHILIPSBURG--With a line-up of artists such as rapper Yung Joc, dancehall king Mr. Vegas, soca monarch Crazy and the legendary King Shadow topping the list of performers at the first Cultural Blend at Carnival Village on May 4, Carnival 2007 will certainly end with a “big bang.”

Ethiopian reggae singer Lion Dread will also make a special appearance on stage singing some of his latest hits, including “Mama Ethiopia.” He is one of the promoters’ surprise specials for this special event sponsored by local cellular phone company TelCell.

The show will be hosted by well-known Tempo hostess Jeanille of Trinidad
and show time is at 8:00pm. Local promoter Triple M. Promotions has secured line-up of talented local musicians, including DJ Shine, and 4 D Haterz, to join these phenomenal international artistes to put on the first Cultural Mix Show for the island.

Yung Joc, aka Jasiel Robinson, whose album New Joc City is set for a summer release, is extremely passionate and determined to make a better life for himself, his family and his comrades. Joc, whose hip-hop inspirations came from Outkast, Goodie Mob, Tupac, and the Notorious B.I.G. will be on stage in St. Maarten to perform for what is expected to be the biggest concert of the year.

He will be performing on the same stage with one of Jamaica’s hottest rising stars, Mr. Vegas, who first topped Jamaica’s music charts in 1997 with the dancehall hit “Heads High and Nike Air.” He is known for his distinctive vocals fusing melodious singing with precision “deejaying” (rapping). Other songs in his arsenal include “Pull Up,” “Tamale” and “Hot Gal Today.”

As the promoters have dubbed this hit show a “Cultural Mix,” it would not be complete without soca and calypso, and one of the Caribbean’s most talented calypsonians and soca singers combined for the past 25 years has been “Crazy.”

He was born Edwin Ayoung in Trinidad and seems to have been destined for greatness
. From the moment he entered the musical arena, he has been one of the most controversial, comical and downright entertaining artists the art form has ever seen or heard. His lyrical blend of serious situations tuned into comedy catches the attention of fans in almost every song he produces, and his music gives you that happy sense of wanting to laugh while dancing, a sure bet for a good time.

Panday: I do not want confrontation
Juhel Browne and Darren Bahaw

Thursday, April 26th 2007

Former Couva North MP Basdeo Panday decided not to make another attempt to attend a Parliament sitting yesterday, having been blocked from entering the public entrance of the Red House last Friday.

Panday said yesterday he decided not to do so again because he wanted to avoid a confrontation between his supporters and the police.

A contingent of police similar to that which blocked Panday on Friday was at the public entrance of the Red House yesterday, as the House of Representatives held its sitting.

"In battle you must never fight the enemy on their strong ground. You fight them in their weakest ground....I must take my battle to another level which is to the people and the streets. A series of activities are being planned," Panday said in an interview.

He disclosed no details.

House Speaker Barendra Sinanan has banned Panday from attending any Parliament sittings at the Red House until the High Court has ruled on the vacancy of the Couva North seat.

Panday said he received a High Court notice concerning the vacancy of his former seat yesterday.

The Express has also learnt that the Director of Public Prosecutions, Geoffrey Henderson, has written the Magistrate's Court Clerk of the Peace, Eugene Prince, seeking to have Panday's trial on charges of failing to declare a London bank account relisted.

The status hearing for the matter filed by the Parliament to the High Court, seeking a determination of the vacancy of the Couva North seat, will be heard on May 1 before Justice Charmaine Pemberton at the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain.

"My lawyers were served with what is called an application to fix the date for not the hearing of the matter but how the matter will proceed," Panday said.

Panday has been seeking to return to the House of Representatives as the Couva North MP, since the Appeal Court on March 20 quashed his conviction and sentence handed down by Chief Magistrate Sherman McNicolls last year on failing to declare a London bank account from 1995-1997.

The Appeal Court had ruled a retrial of the case.

The Express understands Henderson wrote Prince two weeks ago but has not yet received a response.

COPS SEARCH ZEN
Hunt on for Akon sex tape
Kristy Ramnarine

Thursday, April 26th 2007

   .

Police conducted a search at the Zen nightclub yesterday, halting business at the venue for just over two hours.

The Express understands that the officers may have been searching for footage of R&B/hip-hop performer Akon allegedly engaging in sex acts at his recent concert at the nightclub.

Keate Street, Port of Spain was thrown into chaos as plain clothes and uniformed police officers surrounded Zen while others searched inside the venue.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Winston Cooper, confirmed there was a search yesterday.

However, he said it was part of the ongoing investigation into the dirty dancing incident at the nightclub, which featured 15-year-old Danah Alleyne and Akon. Cooper said the police did not find anything yesterday.

According to police sources, a warrant was obtained by the police to search the premises for surveillance video footage of the club from the particular night of Akon's performance.

On Tuesday, Zen management apologised to Alleyne, her family and the public at large "with the hope that with time, the embarrassment and pain caused by the incident will ease, especially for Danah".

In a statement, the management of the club, which is owned by Johnny Soong, also said, "We do not shy away from our responsibility in this matter and accept that we made an error in judgment on the night in question."

Meanwhile, attorney Kelvin Ramkissoon has written to Director of Public Prosecutions, Geoffrey Henderson, on behalf of the Alleyne family, asking him to make a public call to those responsible for publications and commentaries on the issue to respect Alleyne's legal status. According to the law, Alleyne is a child.

"In accordance with the foregoing authorities and as litigated in the local case of Boodram v The AG, there accordingly exists a duty upon you, as the public functionary vested with the repository of the plenitude of power under section 90 of the Constitution, to ensure that any potential process instituted is reasonably free from prejudice and must be a sterile and objective process so far as is reasonably practicable.

"I therefore call upon you to use your good office and your usual independent judgment to issue a call upon the media to exercise restraint and reasonable judgment, cognizant of potential issues and outcomes in the further publication and/or commentary over the alleged incident surrounding my client."

Ramkissoon said: "The recent widespread and negative publications surrounding the alleged incident cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be deemed to be a sterile and objective account of the said incident.

"Above all, Miss Alleyne is a young person within the statutory parameters and is perhaps more than any other party entitled to the fullest protection of the law."

Attempts to reach Henderson and Soong last night were futile.

Boycott Zen, says Job-Davis
Kimberly Mackhan

Thursday, April 26th 2007

The owners of the Zen nightclub should be held responsible for the lewd act performed between R&B/hip-hop superstar Akon and 15-year-old Danah Alleyne at a recent concert held at the club, Minister in the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, Eudine Job-Davis, has said.

She added that patrons should now boycott the nightclub to protest what she described as "that kind of behaviour".

Job-Davis stressed that the simulated sex act, which the teenager indulged in, should be resolved between the child and her parents.

"I can tell you that that hurt me to my core to see a young Trinidad and Tobagonian girl being treated that way by a man," Job-Davis said.

"I want to say, I am not excusing the young lady by any means, she has to take responsibility for her actions.[/b] But it is a matter between her and her parents and they should know how to discipline their daughter.

"I also want to say that the owners of club should be held absolutely and totally responsible for that what happened there."

Job-Davis made the statements during her contribution to the Equal Opportunities Bill at yesterday's special sitting of the House of Representatives in Port of Spain.

She told members of the Lower House that before she arrived at the Parliament, she received an e-mail that featured a video clip of the incident.

The video showed Alleyne dancing in a provocative manner with Akon on stage during his performance at the Port of Spain nightclub two weeks ago. It has been displayed on several well-known websites, including links on VH1 and YouTube-Broadcast Yourself.

When Princes Town MP Subhas Panday asked Job-Davis what sanctions she would recommend for the owner of club Zen, Job-Davis replied: "I really don't have the answers for the sanction. I just would like to see now what you can do is boycott the club. Maybe people can do that. They ought to be held responsible if that is the kind of behaviour that they are going to promote in this country."

Job-Davis added that the issue had generated a lot of concern among the local population.

"I think that all the men who were present that night in that club should really hang their heads in shame because they allowed it to continue. Yes, the young lady has to take responsibility for her actions, but as a society, we should not have allowed that to happen in that way," she said.

"It goes even wider and deeper than club Zen and the young girl. It speaks to the issue of the internet, it speaks to the issue of our television, it speaks to the issue of monitoring more closely our children.

"I want to say to parents, that we are not immune from what happened there. Our children are not immune from that, it can happen to any one of us and therefore we must learn a lesson from that and pay closer attention to our children and to spend more quality time with them."

Brown, Burns in Penn squad
Kwame Laurence klaurence@trinidadexpress.com

Wednesday, April 25th 2007

Track stars Darrel Brown and Marc Burns will wear Trinidad and Tobago colours at the Penn Relays in Pennsylvania, USA, on the weekend.

Brown and Burns are among five sprinters selected on the T&T squad for Saturday's men's "USA vs the World" 4x100 metres relay. They will be joined in Pennsylvania by Aaron Armstrong, teenager Keston Bledman and Kevon Pierre.

At the 2005 World Championships, in Helsinki, Finland, Pierre, Burns, Jacey Harper and Brown combined for silver in 38.10 seconds-a new national record. Harper was originally selected on the T&T sprint relay squad for the 2007 Penn Relays, but pulled out after sustaining a minor injury.

Bledman, coach Ashwin Creed and manager Dexter Voisin leave for the Penn Relays tomorrow. Jamaica-based Brown, and US-based Burns, Armstrong and Pierre are also expected in Pennsylvania tomorrow.

Voisin, the manager of the T&T team for the 2007 World Champion-ships in Osaka, Japan, told the Express the main goal at Penn Relays is achieving the 39.00 seconds World Champion-ship qualifying standard.

"This is the first time they're competing together for the year. We want to get the guys together and get a qualifying time. There are other athletes, like Richard Thompson and Marcus Duncan, who are not available because of school commitments, but that gives Bledman the opportunity to secure a spot. We'll be mixing the team during the season, based on availability. We're hoping for a pool of eight to choose from for Japan."

T&T have already qualified for the World Championship men's 4x400m event. At the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, in Colombia, last year, T&T earned mile relay silver in three minutes, 02.65 seconds, 65-hundredths of a second faster than the 3:03.30 qualifying standard.

Ex-national footballer jailed
Denyse Renne drenne@trinidadexpress.com

A former national footballer has been sentenced to four years hard labour by a Sangre Grande magistrate, after he pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Leon Jackson, 44, of Feria Circular, Guyaguayare, appeared before Magistrate Cheryl-ann Blake on Monday, charged with possession of $60,000 in marijuana.

The court heard that around 3.15 p.m. on Saturday, Jackson was walking along Railway Road, Sangre Grande, when he was spotted by officers of the Eastern Division Task Force.

Upon seeing the officers, Jackson started acting suspiciously and was stopped by them.

A blue and grey knapsack he had on his person was searched and officers found 2.6 kilos of compressed high grade marijuana. Cpl Junior Bernard laid the charge.
