Austria dominated the second half and were unlucky not to get something for their efforts. They had Croatia on the ropes and would have snatched something had they had a decent finisher up front. The Austrian crowd were fantastic. I thought Croatia were dire in the second half and had their backs to wall yet they still looked fairly organised and focused.

I can't believe that this was the same Croatia side that eliminated England in the qualifiers, which just goes to show how much of a poor coach McClaren actually was.

I don't think so.

Yorke is a former Champions League winner and has proven himself at the highest level, so he knows what he's talking about.

I agree with all of that.

You can't compare Jones with Drogba. Drogba will get you thirty goals a season and has proven himself at international level against some quality sides and also done it in the Champions League.

Drogba is one of the top 5 strikers in the world and pretty ruthless in front of goal, regardless of his arrogant attitude and questionable antics on the field.

Jones is far from the complete target man. He has the potential but its up to him.

I think a World Cup held in England is long overdue.

The last time they hosted it was in '66. Their main rivals for 2018 is the USA who are not a traditional football nation and have already hosted it as recently as 1994.

England hosted a trouble free Euro 96 and are even better equipped now to host a major tournament with most of their top flight stadiums being state of the art.

I fail to see what that has to do with their ability to host a WC (which they've already done successfully).  Many will argue that Trinidad is not a "tradtional football nation"...whatever that means.

Well, for one thing why host the tournament in a country that doesn't care much for the game in general? In '94 many Americans didn't even know that a World Cup was being held there and it was given minimal media coverage. It was nothing more than a PR exercise and cash grabbing exercise by FIFA. Sure they have the MLS now but the quality of football is still light years behind Europe and is fourth or fifth in the pecking order of national sports in the States. This is why I applauded the choice to host the next one in Africa, as it will be their first World Cup and they genuinely appreciate the game. Unlike the US.

Yes, the USA hosted it successfully but must they do so again in such a short space of time? If USA win the 2018 vote, they will have hosted it twice in the last 24 years. Thats pretty good going for a country whose media to football as a 'girls sport'. Compare that to England who haven't hosted it since '66, despite that the fact that they have a large number of state of the art stadiums (Wembley, Old Trafford. St James Park, Eastlands, The Emirates, Pride Park, The Riverside, The Reebok Stadium etc. etc.) and facilities plus the fact that they hosted Euro 96 pretty well without incident.

I don't see why the USA should get the nod again in 2018 because they have better marketing skills and money to throw at FIFA. I thought the idea of hosting the World Cup was supposed to add some variety and give everyone around the world the opportunity to experience it first hand. It reeks of political tennis.

They will have to win something first to deserve that moniker.

Thing is, Portugal often struggle against efficient, well organised teams.

You only have to look at the 2004 Euro final for proof.

I don't think Italy will win it. Part of the reason they won the World Cup was due to Marcello Lippi's tactical nous. They don't have thet anymore.

I'd have to go for Holland or Germany.

Spain are overdue a major trophy, so they'll be my dark horse.

Football / Re: C. Ronaldo reveals Madrid desire!!
« on: June 07, 2008, 04:03:12 PM »

But lets face it, de man want to win as much tings as possible!! He doen win everything in England already: Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Scoring Title, MVP etc

Time to move on......

Your post is ridiculous to the point of being banal.

The players United have sold to Madrid are players that they were willing to let go. Van Nistelrooy was offloaded because of his problems with Ronaldo and inability to adapt to the new system that united wanted to employ. You'll notice that at the latter half of the the 2005/06 season, United were playing Rooney and Saha up front and Ronaldo roaming with great success and almost nearly won the title that season. It was clear the RVNs time was up and was promptly sold. Notice how RVN was PUT UP FOR SALE. The following season, United win the league.

Near the end of the 2002/03 season, Solskjaer was employed on the right flank instead of Beckham. United win the league and Beckham is sold. Both of these players were put up for sale by United. Madrid just happened to offer the most money for both of them.

Fergie is an expert at breaking teams up and building better ones. It doesn't matter who you are, if you don't fit in with the new system he wants to put in place for success, you're gone. In the summer of 1995, United sold Hughes, Ince and Kanchelskis. Thats three STAR players sold. The following season, United promote Scholes, Beckham, Neville and Butt from the youth team and promptly win the league and FA Cup.

The problem here is that united DON'T want to sell Ronaldo. Madrid don't want to play by the rules and open formal negotiations or make a formal approach, instead they use their media machine to say "We will give him x amount of money if he comes to us" or "We will sign him" ignoring the fact that they haven't approached United nor have their been any negotiations because United have put a 'Not for sale' sign on his head. They can't talk to Ronaldo without the clubs consent because thats a breach of the regulations and illegal.

You can't have employees talking to other people and signing contracts and their employer not knowing anything about it.

ManUtd = Feeder club to bigger teams like Real Madrid and Chelsea...:rotfl:

And who have United sold to Chelsea to make them a feeder club? I'll answer that. Nobody.

The last United player to move to Chelsea was Juan Veron in the summer of 2003.

Bigger clubs like Real Madrid and Chelsea?

Who are the current European Champions?

would it not give you great joy to see a player you developed so much succeeding at the best club in the world?

Madrid have failed to get past the quarter final stage of the Champions League in their last four attempts.

In that time, an average Liverpool side who haven't won their domestic championship since 1990, have gotten to the final twice (winning it once).

Still think they're the best club in the world?

Football / Re: Platini attacks 'cheats' United and Chelsea
« on: June 07, 2008, 03:33:43 PM »
Platini seems to have a gripe with the current resurgence of English club football.

When Serie A clubs were spunking 16 million pounds on average wingers like Gianluigi Lentini in the mid 90s (when the current transfer record in England at that time was the 3.5 million pounds Blackburn Rovers paid Southampton for Alan Shearer), there wasn't a peep from UEFA or FIFA on the matter. The whole inflated transfer fee situation came into being in the mid 90's when Italian clubs had a wealth of money at their disposal and Spain and England just followed suit, with the advent of TV rights and merchandising.

Theres no law or restrictions in place with regards to who buys a club. If its such a problem, why doesn't Platini implement some rules and guidelines to govern the buyouts of big clubs by foreign investors? His arguments seem to be a little more personal.

To say a team cheats their way to success because they buy the best players just goes to show how out of touch Platini is with reality. Is he saying its against the rules for United to buy quality players because they can afford them? Another facgtor that Platini conveniently ignores is that once a club knows that another club with money is interested in one of their players, they automatically hike up the fee to get more cash? Again, is this the fault of Manchester United because they have the luxury of pulling in more revenue?

Platini is also conveniently keeping his mouth shut over the Ronaldo affair though. Real Madrid are offering 75 million plus a 200+ grand a week for him and are continually and publicly trying to tap him up illegally when United have flatly told him he is not for sale. They haven't even spoken to United or Ronaldo, nor have they negotiated with them...yet they are publicly claiming through third party media outlets that they have signed him when no negotiations have taken place with Man United. United haven't even given them permission to speak to Ronaldo...which are the rules for any transfer deal. Wheres his tongue on that issue?

The points for the England game would not have been accounted for in this month's version of the rankings. The cut off date is usually the thursday before publication...

Yes they should have. It is listed there as being played in the time period.
http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=eng/ranking/gender=m/index.html

Other matches from June 1 got points just for example:

01/06   SWE 0:1 (0:0) UKR   Friendly   531.00
01/06   POL 1:1 (1:1) DEN   Friendly   167.00

Maybe its because our friendly actually finished on Monday June 2 (GMT)?

Thats correct.

The UK is five hours ahead and the game would have finished after midnight, UK time.

to me we played more attacking football than in nuremberg , and we knocked the ball better and held possesion much longer.

Take off your red tinted spectacles.

England went two nil up within the first 15 minutes without breaking sweat. Playing a more open game was part of T&Ts problem. In 2006 they were compact and didn't give too much away until the very end. On Sunday they woefully open and as a result, England waltzed through without doing much during the first hafl. End result? 2-0 down at half time.

I take it you were not at the game because it was just wayward pass after wayward pass from midfield whilst England sat back and collected whatever scraps were left. When Defoe made it 3-0 it was game over and England just sat back and played for time. By holding possession I suppose you mean the defence passing to midfield and then midfield knocking it back to the defence? What game were you watching?

Trinidad had one shot on target.

With regards to Van Nistelrooy, this is the same Van Nistelrooy who was very open with his dislike of Ronaldo while he was at United. Part of the reason Van Nistelrooy was sold was because of the fracas he had with Ronaldo on the training ground after reducing Cristiano to tears by making fun of his dead father.

Madrid are playing a very dangerous game and it borders on an illegal approach.

"However, it does not depend on me."

Listen to what he says there.

Madrid pull this tactic every close season to unsettle big name players into joining them. Two days ago, Calderon says that he does not want to destroy the good relationship Madrid have with United. Last week he says it would be impossible to sign Ronaldo. Today he says "I'll give Ronaldo three hundred grand a week". Now we have Van Nistelrooy, a player who already went public and said that he and Ronaldo never got on with each other when at United.

Madrids PR and propaganda machine is running at full pelt and this will just go on and on. If Ronaldo wants to go then let him go. Let them pay United 100 million and let them pay Ronaldo three hundred thousand a week. A hundred grand could buy United Huntelaar, Quaresma and Richards and they'll still have change to spare for any additional signings. No one player is bigger than the club.

This is why a lot of American sports have a wage cap.

I doubt very much he'll be going anywhere.

This is a common tactic for Madrid, unsettle the players they want to sign by having their propaganda machine shit out a couple articles which are based on nothing more than hearsay.

He was supposed to go there last summer no?

Football / Re: W Connection vs Chivas 2nd game review.
« on: March 01, 2007, 12:31:37 PM »
I attended the first game, thought they did well considering they went down to ten men.

Last night was poor. The first goal was pure comedy, almost a carbon copy of the goal Van Der Sar conceded on Saturday against Fulham. Why rush 12 yards off your line when you have two defenders already in front of you to take care of things? The second goal was just pure naivety. The boy had three players around him, instead of getting in front of the striker and trying to head clear they all stood there watching the ball being planted onto his head! You can't make mistakes like that at this level. It was like watching an Intercol game "You head it! No, you head it! No you..."...

They were getting murdered down the right flank in the second half. Connections full back was woefully exposed, and was getting no support from the winger in front of him. In Europe, you will see how the wingers will often drop back to give extra support to the defending full backs. What was even more worrying was that Fevrier didn't do anything to stop them from marauding down the right, he just left things as they were and Chivas kept knocking balls down the right channel for the winger to chase and they knocked in two goals as a result...

Earl Jean was left up front on his own, without any support whatsoever, even when he did manage to get possession. I mean, come on...if you're going to play him as a lone striker then at least tell the wingers to move infield when possession has been retained to feed him a few through balls or hit him with a few crosses, or get a midfielder to run from deep to support the attack. You'll notice that neither of Connections wingers got to the by-line and flung in a cross of any quality, and the midfield were all clustered together in the centre circle.

I thought it was awful. It could have been five or six since Chivas had already hit the post and the crossbar.

A lot of work needs to be done...
