dem men seein the quality of Manu and Chelsea, and hearing about the money Liverpool plans to spend... so they know the battle at the top going to be real hard, and arsenal not making the significant steps forward to be a "great side", dem men doh want to be 3rd and slipping... they want the opportunity to be great, but see it's unlikely with a young ManU side that will only get better, and Chelsea with an owner who is richer than some small countries, and is wilingl to break the bank, and a Liverpool side who is capable of getting better. the road only going to get harder. so dem men riding out... taking the money/gettin better life style/and opportunity... seriously how much time C Ronaldo have tuh hut yuh up before yuh ride out lol arsenal still is a top side, but you know whart a mean...

Despite the jokeyness of this thread heading... I think this raises a good point about our local footballers. I don't think we do nearly enough fitness work... specifically strenght and speed drills. I was looking at training schedule for the german squad pre world cup, and i remember seeing real training time set aside for non ball skill work... shuttle drills, gym work, even track work... And it shows on the field.

if you can't beat a team technically you have to beat them physically. my favorite example is the USA womens team vs Brazil's womens. Brazil clearly more technical and skillful, but the strenght and speed of the USA team makes up for it. They get to the ball first and when beaten can recover quickly.

I have played football at 170lbs and i have played at 190lbs, it makes a world of diffenrence, even for shit snake like me.

Themanfriday: Gets his recliner, he then goes and places a bag of popcorn in the microwave. Goes back to his recliner.

This is in anticipation of a fine battle thats about to start. ;D

im not trying to force them to, im just saying if you were for example Colin Samuel, would you change you position and concentrate on being a midfielder.  if he  did he will get called up all the time

The thing is, men doh just get up a day and decide they going to be a midfielder. When coaches recruit a player they usually have a very firm idea of exactly what role they want him to play. Usually, people changing positions (in clubs) happens under exceptional circumstances - injury crisis, complete desperation by the coach, coaching staff changes, fluke.

The major exception are the so called utility players, but what that usually means is that a fella can't play any one posiiton to perfect satisfaction but he's useful to have around in case of suspensions at spots where the squad is thin etc.

Take Birchall for example. No matter what he does he is considered a winger by his club(s). Beenie saw what he could bring to the defensive midfield and put him there, but he was recruited as a winger (presumably because of his crossing - it can't be because of his speed) Same way, he could play striker all he want in the reserve games, he's very unlikely to ever feature up top for Coventry under the present manager.

A person can only speak from their experiences and observations, so here goes

Lets face it our talent pool is not deep when it comes to extraordinary players, yes we have a lot of good players, but most are not great. In my experience as a youth in south, I observed that coaches pushed the exceptionally talented players forward into midfield or attack, therefore leaving the mediocre players to be developed into defenders.

I think this mindset tho not clearly evident happens everywhere, but in nations with large talent pools the players who are left behind are still exceptionally talented. In Trinidad the players who are left behind are the likes of Cyd Gray etc... I am pretty sure John Terry could run TnT midfield better than anyone of them fellas now. Until there is more structure to TnT youth football development, beyond that of secondary school leagues, we will continue to be what we are. We need more youths playing structured football from an earlier stage, we need to increase our talent pool. Right now we sit back and pin point talent to late. I was a defender. Mediocre at best.

Football / USA vs ENG - Debate
« on: April 06, 2008, 06:46:43 AM »
So I was watching the show Fox Football Fone-in last week, and the question of the night was
"will the USA squad given their win over Poland overcome an England team whose form has been in question lately?

Many seemed to think USA have a great chance, which I dont agree with, but football is a team game and upsets do happen.

The question however, started me thinking in another direction...
At each position, fwd, mid, def and gk is there any player on the USA team you would start over an english player?

For instance,
Would Dempsey play before Garrard, Lampard, Cole, Bentley, Barry etc?
Would Dempsey even be in the running?

The only position in my opinion that a US player could stand a chance is at GK.

Just goes to show that this is the ultimate team game!

KJ should not be to hot to trot with Derby...

It's very good that he is getting recognition, and it will only serve to propel him onto other team's target list...

He is young and has the time to be selective, he should not go to the prem just be cause its a division higher. The bids will come if he continues to play as well as he has been, and better situations will present itself.

take Carlos for example, choosing Sunderland over Prem Clubs last year, that worked out well... KJ doh rush de brush!!!

Derby just does not feel or look like the best situation... If it were any other team besides the newly promoted Birmingham and Derby... I would say "get the hel out of southhampton", but for now stay where you are and don't demand a trade, that may devalue your character in some coaches eyes...

Football / Heinze might be on his way out at Man Utd.
« on: July 16, 2007, 01:38:20 PM »
:praying: I hope this is true, I hope he gets his wish and moves on to another club!

Heinze keen to make Man Utd exit

Heinze joined Manchester United from Paris St Germain in 2004
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says defender Gabriel Heinze wants to leave Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old has been playing in the Copa America for Argentina and he has been linked with moves to Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle and Juventus.

Ferguson said: "Gaby's agent has advised us that he wants to move on.

"I am not too sure about that and we do not have a concrete offer but there is momentum regarding his next move, even if nothing is close right now."

Liverpool have been linked with Heinze for some time and Reds boss Rafael Benitez is believed to have met the £6.8m asking price.

However, Ferguson is not thought to be keen on the former Paris St Germain star joining one of their Premier League rivals.

Heinze will take an extended holiday after Argentina's 3-0 defeat by Brazil in Sunday's Copa America final in Venezuela.

He joined United from Paris St Germain for £6.9m in 2004.

in my dialect of spanish, galactico translated in english means big money player...

the plus 15 million pound players on that side..

Rooney
Ronaldo
Tevez
Hargreaves
Carrick
Ferdinand
Nani
Anderson

Funny how nobody talking about Man United trying to buy a trophy this season.. I guess that talk is the reserve of the Chelsea haters...

Bredds I see where you are coming from and I understand your rationale, but I don't think you are looking far forward... So I respectfully disagree....ManU is securing a successful future... Giggs, Scholes will be moving on to the next step in the careers/lives soon... Fergie is avoiding another Roy Keane type of situation, where a sudden departure left the team a little less than stellar... Fergie is simply being proactive rather than reactionary!

Everyone is relatively young and will have time to adjust to the style of play, plus they wont have to shoulder the burden of being " The Guy" right away!

Everyone buys titles, because everyone buys players... I agree size of payroll defintely sets a team off on a path to relative success, but we need to recoqnize that alot of teams are successful but not all are champions!

Money spent does not put you on a golden pathway to success in Europe... It does set teams apart in their domestic leagues... ultimately for greater success it takes more than a deep pocket...you just have to look toward Real Madrid for a prime example!

At beginning of last season everyone doubted ManU... everyone! "we did not have the fire power up front" , "rooney and ronaldo can't mesh" , "unsettled midfield, can carrick fill keane's shoes" etc... but we proved the skeptics wrong.... with that same side that everyone doubted, we went a long way in Europe, eventually losing to the champions AC milan.

Fergie is a genius manager and his staff of coaches are the best in the business... give them props... you can say that ManU is good because they buy some of the best players in the world.... But ManU is more than just good.... they are great! and greatness takes more than money!
But ManU is more than just good.... they are great! and greatness takes more than money!

And this BIG striker and Small striker combination talk leading to Rooney and Tevez not being a good partnership is pack of assness... ah alot of assness! I don't even want Tevez at ManU because he is from Argentina, but since when does a team having A big guy and a small guy the standard!

What about Yorke and Cole.... Two of them was almost the same.... hmmm...

Talent rules on the day and it is a completely random and magical coindence when to strikers complement each other like that! there is no formula... so stop trying so hard to sound like a freaking football orcale

Marcus,

I agree with most of what you say apart from this tootoo above..

But is my fault and i apologize cause i was too general with my "big forward/small forward" analysis of what usually forms the majority of successful strike partnerships..

What i really meant... The fact is that the majority of successful systems that employ 2 forwards work on the basis of one forward to hold up the ball and another to play off of him... This is especially true in the EPL where the long ball is prevalent, and the game is physical..

Lets look at such successful type partnerships currently in the EPL:

Holdup Fwd (Bigman)           Support Fwd (Smallman)
Saha                                   Rooney                               Man Utd
Drogba                                Shevchenko                        Chelsea
Adebayor                             Henry                                 Arsenal
Crouch                                 Kuyt/Bellamy                       Liverpool (Borderline successful)
Berbatov                              Keane/Defoe                      Tottenham
Anelka                                 Diouf                                  Bolton
Kanu                                   Benjani/Lua Lua                    Portsmouth
Zamora                                Tevez                                 West Ham

Now do you see a clear pattern between the type of players in the first list and the second list and how they complement each other?? If you can't maybe football is not for you....

I'm not sure if you watched Man United football in 1999, but Yorke and Cole worked in EXACTLY the same way... Yorke was the hold up player (one of the best i've ever seen by the way) who would collect with his back to goal, and lay off to beckham, scholes and giggs or cole if he got into space.. Cole was the predator/finisher who would play off of Yorke..  Thats why that combination worked so well because they were two totally different players..

So how could you say its pure assness??

In my opinion Rooney and Tevez won't work.. Unless Fergie and Quieroz have some revolutionary new system to play dem 2 forwards, or he going and play them out of position, i feel they will get in each other's way.. By and large they play the same way..

And finally yes, for your information i am a football oracle!

I definitely agree that is how Yorke and Cole played, but they both assumed those two roles interchangably at times, with Yorke being the back to goal striker more often... you are correct in making that point which is already well known fact by everyone!

However, besides for Drogba and Shevchenko, I find it very hard to transpose Yorke and Cole's (holdup man and support man) style to the other strike partnerships you mentioned above... I follow the prem very extensively, you might want to refresh your memory of this past season by looking at some matches on your TIVO's or probably go to youtube and get some highlights or something...

ManU plays differently since the era of Yorke and Cole... the ball is held up in Midfield much more now like how Arsenal plays... attacking with quick passes, thru balls and direct runs on at defenders... ManU objective back in 1999 was to get the ball out wide, to utilize Giggsy pace, Beckham's crossing and the dominance of Yorke and Cole's superior heading, also the ball was played to Yorke alot just outside the 20yd box, this served to coverge the defence, and that it was kicked out wide or played quickly onto a streaking Cole... this is not so today... Saha and Rooney do not play like that... Saha is the front man, that latches on to thru balls and Rooney runs at defence's... Midfielders like Scholes, control ball possession looking for kinks in the armor... Ronaldo and Giggsy stretchs defence's wide to create lane in the middle... that is the ManU attack today!!! Tevez can more than play the role of speedy front man looking for thru passes etc... And to suggest that Rooney does not do work, is not only ridiculous but shows a total disregard for the knowledge base of the forumites on this site... because Rooney works and works his ass off, sometimes I forget he is a forward because he spends so much time all over the field... ball hawk!

Adebayor is defintely not a hold up man, he is a poacher and a lover of the thru ball... Henry's style is a combination of both, with van persie and fabregas combining on quick one twos, also I noticed arsenal wing backs tend to join the play going forward more last season... stretching the defence and bringing in tons of crosses... Anelka he is at his best when he runs at defence's I have to admit I did not see alot of Bolton's game last season... Kanu has lost alot speed, but he is no lay off man! Ok I am tired!  In short it looks like you are listing a slower bigger man as hold up striker and who ever is the faster more nibble guy as the supporter, without regard for how they actually play!!!!!

I don't want to go back and forth on this so lets just agree to disagree!

Don't love him but also don't hate him... He is from Argentina that is a hard fact to overlook!

But if Lula could grow to love Carlitos who knows... I might be able to stand him! maybe!

But I still hope this story is false, I already cringe everytime I see Heinze in a ManU shirt.

Tevez might be a different story, he was able to win over Corinthian fans, because of his humble backgrounds, his unrefined attitude and his stuggle to rise out of poverty, people identified with that in Brazil and embraced him!

I don't know, I rather we not get him! But if we do I can live with it!

Ps. if we do get him, I can only infer that means Fergie plans on keeping Heinze around... Damn

Heinze is a good player, just not as good as he was before the injuries. He was always a blade man and now that he lacking that little extra he is getting shown up.

That aside Tevez would be a good buy. I just hope that Ronaldo lets him take some free-kicks once in a while. I would be concerned about the size of the front line (look at some of Drogba’s goals to see the benefit of an imposing centre-forward) but they were thinking of buying Defoe so I much rather see Tevez. I also hope that Saha could be fit for a whole season because he will complement Tevez and/or Rooney very well.

If this happens and Tevez plays as he could peopel will be talking about him like they do cantona in a couple years. Old Trafford is a real big stage for quality players to shine on.

I am openly biased against Argentina, so doh study it.... I am irrational when it comes to Argentina, I doh even like Maradona (till this day he won't admit that he is actually born in brazil...  see what I mean by irrational! lol) Even as a defender Heinze could score a goal every game and if given a choice I would still say get of rid of him! thats how bad I am!

Tevez, its hard to totally hate him, because he comes from such a NON aristocrat/socialist type of background...one reason why he was eventually embraced by Corinthian fans as they identified with it! Granted he is definitely not the only player from Argentina to come from humble beginnings, but something about Tevez nature makes me view hime differently! With that said I still don't love him and hope he does not come to ManU!

If he does I will have to deal with it! Rafael Sobis would be a great fit at ManU!

I have supported and read alot of flack about this player. But i want to bet that Seon Powers has what it takes to become a good defender for T&T . Great heart and commitment .I hope he keep up the good work  and dont let what he  read here affect his willingness to become a better player for T&T.

He has drastically improved CERTAIN aspects of his game from the  Digicel Cup and under the defensive coaching of WIM he will be a good enough defender in two years.

About the tourney. T&T with or without stars only once ever got past the first round. Great learning experience , much improved young stars that will form the bulk of our hope and dream for 2010 qualification.

WIM is a boss !!!!! Kudos to A. Roberts last night !!

Laters

I not out to down this youth man at all... I hope he becomes a good defender.... unlikely

but right now he is no where close to being a good international, I don't even know if he is good enough for english 2nd div.

again I am just giving my unbiased opinion from what I saw in the Gold Cup

I doubt from what I have seen that he will ever make it out of Trinidad

Lacking speed, composure and ball skills... again this guy is probably better than 99% of us on the forum... but he doesn't play against us!

lemm chook a lil ole talk......if Chelsea did spend 50 million pounds on hargreaves, nani and anderson, what allyuh men woulda be saying?

Building for the future... all an investment for Mau Utd.
Man Utd. Midfield is getting old and its the right time to make the move, those guys don't have to come in and take over right away...

It will have some buffer time while Scholes and Giggsy wind down their careers. For, Hargreaves alot will be expected of him off the bat, hopefully he turns out to be a good fit... but you can't compare these purchases to the type Chelsea makes.... Ballack, Sheva, Shaun-Wright-Philips

Winning being competitive in Eurpoe pays for these expenditures and then some... it's a business.... a business of success, which Fergie has done better than anyone over the last two decades!

boss Ballack although not his usual self has scored his fair share of game wining goals.. lets not forget how chelsea got to the FA cup final to BEAT man U.....Sheva 13 goals not his usual tally but still more than alot others besides he was brought to score 20 gaols but drogba ended up doing it ....SWP has weighed in with about 6 goals from the midfield role and finally finding his form and guess what ..he is still young

Mate what part of building for future yuh dont understand
Oye! read... digest... think... doh talk

Ballack 30yrs > free transfer > when signed was highest paid player in the history of football > 130,000 pounds/weekly!

Sheva 30yrs > 31mm pounds > in the top ten for highest transfer fee ever paid for a player, underperformed

Ashley Cole 26yrs > Gallas + legal fees + fines + 5mm pounds > played half the season

SW-Philip 26yrs > 21mm pounds > if I am not mistaken my boy play 1/3rd of the season... benched

Mikel 20yrs > 17mm pounds > gets what is reffered to as cobo sweat, but could be a player for the future

Mikel is the only one I agreed with he will be good, I like SW Phillip but 21mm come on, they over paid!

VERSUS

Carrick 25yrs > 14mm pounds > could rise to 18mm depending on performance, played 75% on the season

Hargreaves 26yrs > 17mm pounds > Recent signing yet to be determined, 2 to 3mm to high of a price

Nani 20yrs > 15mm pounds > Price is an estimate, official fees not known as yet, but are probably lower!

Anderson 19yrs > 15mm pounds > Price is an estimate, official fees not known as yet, but are probably lower!

Winning being competitive in Eurpoe pays for these expenditures and then some... it's a business.... a business of success, which Fergie has done better than anyone over the last two decades!

is that you dragon?

lol

Don't think that will happen.... Especially with the new signings in Midfield.... Plus Fergie going after youth!

And Sunderland management smarter than that, they will wait for Carlos to get richer in value during next season and then sell him!
Like Watford do with Ashley Young!

Teh only way that move happening is if MAnu offer ridiculous money to Sunderland for Carlos.... not going to happen! Or Manu take Carlos on loan while sending a couple youths on loan to Sunderland.

OH yes, finally some more Portugese blood in the side.... now just get rid of Heinze...

I know Anderson from Grêmio and the U-17 team, I know nothing about Nani's career, but from what I have seen it looks like speed is the order of the day... I love the direction Fergie is going...

Now just get rid of the Argentinian... and sign Marcelo or Alex Silva!
