Football / Emmanuel Adebayor Thread
« on: October 23, 2007, 07:18:24 AM »
Emmanuel Adebayor has no right near a premiership team-IMHO

Many of you know of and perhaps even share my enmity towards Emmanuel Adebayor as a footballer and the principal reason is the fact that he is  a long way off of premiership and Arsenal quality.

His chance to conversion rate is very poor and if you give any other striker in the premiership the chances that the arsenal midfield create for him, that person would be a prolific striker.

I have decided that any time any of his many footballing foibles are documented, i will post them.

In Sat's game against Bolton he had some glaring misses, none better than rounding the defender and Bolton keeper, taking the ball into the corner and then with no one on him and the ball in front of him falling over himself and losing a blatant goal scoring opportunity...lol (I will post it when it becomes available lol)

Maybe it's just he feels intimidated against Bolton, or maybe he is blatantly not premiership quality....I think it's the latter.

Now I wouldn't mind that much if he was rubbish and was humble  .....but no no no, he thinks he's the ISH....moreso than serial self adulator Djibril Cisse.

Cue serial gum bumper.  Let me see you come to the sh*thound's defence  :D

Here are just 2 clips, I will post more as they become available...

Pet camel kills Australian woman
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/6954728.stm

A woman in Australia has been killed by her pet camel after the animal may have tried to have sex with her.

The woman was found dead at the family's sheep and cattle ranch near the town of Mitchell in Queensland.

The woman had been given the camel as a 60th birthday present earlier this year because of her love of exotic pets.

The camel was just 10 months old but already weighed 152kg (336lbs) and had come close to suffocating the family's pet goat on a number of occasions.

On Saturday, the woman apparently became the object of the male camel's desire.

It knocked her to the ground, lay on top of her and displayed what the police delicately described as possible mating behaviour.

"I'd say it's probably been playing, or it may be even a sexual sort of thing," the Associated Press news agency quoted Queensland police Detective Senior Constable Craig Gregory as saying.

Young camels are not normally aggressive but can become more threatening if treated and raised as pets.

Football / Work Permits: When They Want You, They Want You

City new boys granted permits

Manchester City duo Vedran Corluka and Valeri Bojinov have both been granted work permits.

 http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~1088873,00.html

Although neither player met the strict criteria required for the permits, City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson made a personal appearance at the pair's appeal hearing in Sheffield and was rewarded by confirmation they will be able to take up their contracts.

"We are talking about two extremely good footballers of enormous quality," said Eriksson. "And I'm delighted that the permits have been granted."

added complication

Both players are eligible for Saturday's Barclays Premier League opener against West Ham United at Upton Park. However, neither Bulgarian striker Bojinov or Croatian defender Corluka has played a pre-season match so far, which is sure to figure in Eriksson's thoughts.

And there is an added complication in Corluka's case in that he was forced to board a flight back to Zagreb in order to get an official passport stamp allowing him to work in the UK.

It means Corluka may not even be able to feature in City's final training session before they head to London, making it somewhat unlikely he would be involved.

Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Elano already has his work permit and is hopeful of receiving international clearance in time to be available for the season-opener.

Hinds banned in Jamaica cricket

Monday, August 6th 2007

Jamaica captain Wavell Hinds has been banned for the rest of this calendar year for alleged verbal abuse of umpires.

According to Jamaica's Sunday Observer, during the game involving the Hinds-led Kensington Cricket Club and Trelawny Parish at Kensington Park, Hinds allegedly verbally abused the officials.

On-field umpires Errington Malcolm and Desmond Edwards subsequently filed an official complaint. On Friday, July 27, the Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Justice Howard Cooke and including attorneys Jeffrey Mordecai and Dr Lloyd Barnett; former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Tony Irons; and the informal chaplin of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Rev Selvin Watson, found the 30-year-old Hinds guilty of an infringement.

Hinds, who missed last weekend's game against Manchester Parish, has the right to an appeal, which must be filed "within 14 days," according to Paul Campbell, first vice-president of the JCA. However, the local governing body has yet to receive an appeal from the player

Football / Legacy of the Soca Warriors 1965-2006
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:32:21 AM »
This looks as though this would be a good read. Has anyone got a copy?

http://www.guardian.co.tt/features1.html

The Legacy of the Soca Warriors

With 17 chapters having names like Passion, The Journey and Heroes Return, Valentino Singh’s book Legacy of the Soca Warriors takes the reader through one of T&T most historical journeys with enough for both the technical football fan, or the person who just supported with national pride.

With photographs that put the reader on the pitch, the publication also doubles as a picture book with many of the images being different from those popularly published in the media.

For those who could not have been in Dortmund at that historic first match on June 10 of last year, the book does manage to capture the feeling in the first chapter—Passion.

It chronicles the mood in that small German town—where in the morning Swedish fans were predicting an easy win by a large margin, and in the evening when the final whistle blew to signal the goalless draw—tears were streaming down their faces. Singh also points out that it was that moment that many learned who Trinidad and Tobago was; after that, many recognised the tiny specks above Venezuela.

Singh manages to grasp the true feel of hearing the anthem on that day; and the fact that no matter in stadium or bar, or at home in front of television, it brought tears to the eyes.

“Eyes welled up with waters purified by pride pumping from a national heart that had come to life on a football field on the other side of the Atlantic,” he writes, capturing the feel elegantly.

Through many photos, depicting Trinbagonians with arms raised, or with little children celebrating, holding national flags this chapter does evoke passion.

The second chapter, Warriors in Germany, tells of the impact the team had on a country and tournament that largely did not know them. More out of curiosity than camaraderie, Germans and other fans flocked to the Red, White and Black, which was like flypaper.

“From the moment the Soca Warriors touched down in Bremen, Germany, on June 4, the experience entered the realm of the memorable,” Singh recounted.

Similarly in a later chapter, The Impact Of T&T Culture On Germany, it shows the ways Warrior fever was spread. Showing our cultural contingent, crowd shots and pictures of local icons, it gives an idea of what we were doing in between matches. The chapter is quite true because in Germany, it was a constant party. Everyone who came in contact with a Trinbagonian was infected. Rotenburg was nicknamed Soca Village, and our flags were carried by people of many nations.

Describing their arrival at the team hotel in Rotenburg, to the culture contingent supporting the team, to the inundating song Fighter by Maximus Dan, which all of Dortmund probably knows by heart by now, to the Germans who, despite having their own, major team, waved T&T flags, he recounts the ways Trinbago left its mark on the German landscape and history in 2006.

In Chapter 3, Match Days, Singh takes the reader through an almost step by step view of the matches, highlighting many of the notable moments, including the now infamous “Hand of Crouch.” It also details commentary and reviews written by local and foreign commentators.

In a tabled form, there are also match reports entailing who played, the referees and statistics of each game.

Chapter 4, Reflections, a very short chapter, described T&T’s previous missed chances to make the World Cup—against Haiti in 1973 and in more recent memory, the deflating loss against the US in 1990 here at home. It goes into the psychology of our entry into the Fifa fray—and giving an idea of the national mindset during both ‘73 and ‘90.

The first picture one sees in this chapter is a pensive looking Brian Williams—the distinctive “rastaman” from the Strike Squad. His image is particularly evocative, because he was one of those who missed his chance to have a World Cup berth on his resume. He attended the Soca Warrior matches in Germany, and for him it was a time of bittersweet reflection. Like Moses, he saw the promised land and could not step therein.

The chapter following this, The Journey, narrows the aforementioned down specifically for the team’s journey to Germany. Match by match, complete with pictures that would make any patriot misty eyed, it gives great build-up to one of our proudest moments. It goes from when the Soca Warriors got their name, to tables documenting the journey in matches: Qualifiers, friendlys and Concacaf.

Bahrain got a chapter all its own.

The most glorious night in our football history—the night we finally made it—is homaged in chapter 6. The picture of the team’s starting line-up on page 86 shows young men under immense pressure. You can see on their faces that they knew how important that night was, but there was no indication on their faces that they knew they would make it. With quotes from Captain Dwight Yorke, and pictures of players celebrating, you live the night almost through them.

In the chapter Dwight Yorke, the Tobagonian captain of the Soca Warriors, is profiled. This man who went through five tries, then qualified for the World Cup at age 34 is shown in many moods. It gives a look at his life through his career, and has little titbits at the end about his personal life—high profile as it is.

Similarly, Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker and Fifa vice-president, and local controversy magnet Austin Jack Warner are profiled in the two chapters following respectively.

Warner’s chapter is quite comprehensive—giving a look at this remarkable, sometimes maligned man who was instrumental in the Warriors reaching Germany—hate him or love him.

The chapter Corporate Sponsorship shows the symbiotic relationship the business world had with the local team. While many appreciated the corporate sectors galvanising behind the team, they may not have realised just how lucrative supporting the Warriors was for these companies.

The last few chapters of the book are decidedly sentimental.

In Heroes Return, we get a look at the outpouring of love and tinge of controversy that took place when it the Warriors returned to local shores.

The book ends with Players Profiles, showing a headshot and stats, and a little background information on each.

This glossy tome is definitely going to become a collectors item.

Woman jailed for testicle attack

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4253849.stm

A woman who ripped off her ex-boyfriend's testicle with her bare hands has been sent to prison.

Amanda Monti, 24, flew into a rage when Geoffrey Jones, 37, rejected her advances at the end of a house party, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

She pulled off his left testicle and tried to swallow it, before spitting it out. A friend handed it back to Mr Jones saying: "That's yours."

Monti admitted wounding and was jailed for two-and-a-half years.

'Pulled hard'

Sentencing Monti, Judge Charles James said it was "a very serious injury" and that Monti was not acting in self defence.

The court heard that Mr Jones had ended his long-term but "open relationship" with Monti towards the end of May last year.

The pair remained on good terms and on 30 May she picked him up from a party in Crosby and went back for drinks with friends at Mr Jones's house.

An argument ensued and Mr Jones said there was a struggle between them.

In his statement, Mr Jones said she grabbed his genitals and "pulled hard".

He added: "That caused my underpants to come off and I found I was completely naked and in excruciating pain."

The court heard that a friend saw Monti put Mr Jones's testicle into her mouth and try to swallow it.

She choked and spat it back into her hand before the friend grabbed it and gave it back to Mr Jones. Doctors were unable to re-attach the organ.

In a letter to the court, Monti said she was sorry for what she had done.

She said: "It was never my intention to cause harm to Geoff and the fact that I have caused him injury will live with me forever. I am in no way a violent person."

The letter added: "I have challenged myself to explain what has happened but still I just cannot remember. This has caused much anguish to me and will do for the rest of my life."

Football / Trezeguet-Henry Partnership At Arsenal?
« on: June 14, 2007, 04:05:43 AM »
I think this is what Arsenal need, someone who can compliment Thierry and take off some of the goal scoring pressure off of him. Don't mind the source, i've heard it on Skysports as well.

Trezeguet-Henry Partnership At Arsenal?

http://www.goal.com/en-us/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=327189

Arsenal are being linked with a move for Juventus striker David Trezeguet as they look to persuade Thierry Henry his future lies at the Emirates Stadium.

Trezeguet appears to be heading out of the Italian club after rejecting the offer of a new contract.

Henry is keen for manager Arsene Wenger to sign such established stars and would surely welcome the arrival of his international team-mate.

While Wenger would be unlikely to bow to player pressure, he may see Trezeguet as the experience he needs to add to the attack.

Wenger worked with Trezeguet at Monaco and knows the player well.

The 29-year-old has also been linked with Barcelona and Milan.

Henry’s recent remarks suggest his future at the Emirates is not assured, claiming he is an Arsenal player ‘for now’.

Liverpool's penalty hero burgled

<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/6615493.stm/"
target="_blank">Reina robbed while leading Liv to CL Final[/url]

Liverpool FC's heroic goalkeeper Pepe Reina was burgled on Tuesday night as he was helping send the club through to the Champions League final.

The 24-year-old Spaniard saved two out of three spot kicks in a penalty shoot-out against Chelsea at Anfield.

But he returned from celebrating the win in the early hours of Wednesday to find his home in Woolton, Liverpool, had been ransacked.

A number of high value items and the player's Porsche Cayenne were taken.

Paperwork taken

The grey-coloured car - which has Spanish number plates - was found burnt out in Fleetwood Walk at 0630 BST.

Merseyside Police said the burglary happened sometime between 1900 BST on Tuesday and 0045 BST on Wednesday.

Officers were called to the address at 0145 BST after Reina discovered the break-in.

The goalkeeper, who joined Liverpool in the summer 2005, does not want to comment on the incident.

As well as the car, officers said paperwork, jewellery, and a Bang and Olufsen entertainment system was taken.

Footballers targeted

Reina is the latest in a line of footballers who play in the city to be targeted by burglars, often while they were taking part in matches.

The home of his fellow Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was burgled in June 2006 while he was on holiday in Poland. His Porsche, jewellery and football memorabilia was taken by thieves.

Daniel Agger, who scored for Liverpool on Tuesday night, had his home in Wirral burgled in September 2006.

In the same month, Reds striker Peter Crouch's house in Alderley Edge was hit by thieves while he was on England duty.

Meanwhile, Dutchman Andy Van der Meyde - who plays for Everton - was burgled twice in 2006.

I know this might be a controversial topic, but I see the passion with which some men support some of these club teams and I wonder how many of these people have ever been to Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, The Emirates or the Kop.  How many of you know all the songs and the chants. Know what it feels like to hear the roar when they score?

Bottom line. Can you truly be a fan if u've never been to a home game and supported the team for your entire life via tele?

p.s I for one acknowledge talented individual footballers from all over the world, but there is no club/unit that I support to the death other than the Trinidad & Tobago National team, grown up with them, been to many more home and away games than I can remember and definitely know what the roar feels like when we score.

Jack working on his legacy

http://www.newsday.co.tt/sport/0,54993.html

Thursday, April 5 2007

JACK WARNER says he intends to serve in the position of CONCACAF President for as long as he is wanted by affiliates of the regional football organisation.

The Trinidadian made the comment after being re-elected unopposed as for another four-year term recently.

Warner was speaking after leading a successful 30th annual congress of the Caribbean Football Union in Curacao last week when he addressed a number of issues including his intention to develop several aspects of the game in the region.

He also expressed his satisfaction to the entire CFU organisation and offered his fullest support for the St Lucian Football Federation in their battle with their Government over the access of land for the completion of its FIFA Goal Project. Last year Warner attended the sod-turning for the start of construction of a national training centre on land leased by the government at the time.

However, after a change of political administration the project has been put on hold as the new government wants to move the project to another site.

St Lucian Football Association President Wilkie Larcher says the move reeks of partisanship.

As Warner was congratulated by guests and officials, including those from the CONCACAF Executive who also held their meeting in Curacao, the FIFA vice president responded to questions about his future as CONCACAF President.

His re-election for 2007-2011 term follows 17 years in the job.

“I intend to stay as long as the people want me but more importantly I also know my body and it tells me a term or two again will be enough,” the CFU President said.

“There are things I have to do and I’m almost there. I have to put women’s football on a high plateau. I have to get youth football where it should be. I have to make indoor football a reality and I have to put football administration in better hands. “Once I do this in two or four or six years, then I will be gone because the legacy would have been left,” Warner said.

He also expressed dismay over the staging of the current Cricket World Cup.

The biggest con job ever passed off on a region is this Cricket World Cup and it is one of immense proportion not just by the organisation but by the governments as well that have taken limited resources of their people’s money and put it in a dying sport. If there is anything that this World Cup has done well is it has shown people what not to do in the future.

“Imagine in Antigua for a public holiday a brand new stadium is half filled. This has been a World Cup for the organisers, the visitors and the players but certainly not for the people. That’s why the stadiums are empty and that in itself is a con job,” Warner said.

He also slammed the legacy aspect of the staging of the tournament when the newly constructed and refurbished venues will be used solely for cricket.

“It’s foolish! The governments don’t even understand that no public facilities of this magnitude can be for cricket only and survive. When Barbados plays Jamaica in a cricket game, you can hardly get a good crowd but put the same countries in a World Cup qualifier or even a friendly and you shall see the turn out. Football has to rescue these facilities.

It is the most popular sport and it’s the people’s sport,” Warner concluded.

NEWELL IN BLAST AT WOMEN OFFICIALS

http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/sport/football/tm_method=full%26objectid=18083192%26siteid=62484-name_page.html

MIKE NEWELL launched an astonishing sexist attack on women officials last night.

The Luton boss saw his side denied a penalty by referee's assistant Amy Rayner during a 3-2 defeat by QPR.

And Newell raged: "She shouldn't be here. I know that sounds sexist, but I am a sexist.

"It's bad enough with incapable officials. Girls are not allowed to play men's football, so why are they allowed to officiate in Championship matches? Not park games, but the Championship."

The outspoken boss, already leading the attack on the bungs culture, added: "We have a real problem in this country with this politically correct stuff. It's not the way to improve refereeing and officials by bringing women into the game."

He might want to rethink this statement......especially after he went home to the missus  ::)

Manning among ten prime ministers endorsing...

Terry Joseph

Tuesday, May 9th 2006

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article_news?id=157727064

When the Soca Warriors and Peru football team take to the play field tomorrow evening at 6.22 p.m. and President Max Richards and his party subsequently greet them, the crowd will then rise for the playing of not just the usual national songs of the two competing countries but stay on its legs for a third-the world premiere of the West Indies Anthem.

A one-minute song designed for rallying regional self-esteem, The West Indian Anthem has already been endorsed by ten Heads of Governments, including Trinidad and Tobago's Patrick Manning, unanimous approval having come at the end of the plenary session of last February's Caricom Heads meeting.

In fact, the issue was not even on the agenda but at the end of the session on February 10, Guyana's President Bharrat Jagdeo asked chairman Manning if he could raise a matter and, having gotten the nod, played the basic version for the gathering and got instant approval from all relevant Heads present.

"People look sceptical on first hearing about the West Indian Anthem but there is at least one glaring precedent in the not so distant past," said advertising executive Ernie Ross who, together with Anil Hardithsingh, wrote the lyrics.

"Member countries of the European Union all have their hard-won flags and anthems but still they voted to have a single flag and anthem for the federation and 'Ode to Joy' (from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony) was agreed as the piece.

"We haven't really been defined as West Indians by anything else but cricket, although there is a lot of commonality in the heritage of the various people comprising member territories. The idea was presented to the local organising committee of next year's cricket world cup but, while they loved it, this just was not the forum for approval, so we went the route of the Caricom Heads of Government conference, although countries like Haiti aren't part of the West Indies.

"We needed a way to facilitate exposure on a grand scale and the opportunity for a world premiere came with the Soca Warriors match versus Peru and Mr Jack Warner was very enthusiastic about offering us the facility to bring the West Indies Anthem to the attention of the world. We are now approaching schools in the region with a view to making it part of the education of programme but this is a wonderful showcase at which to launch the piece," Ross said.

Today, for the world premiere of this ground-breaking concept, the anthem will be performed by a combination of steelband music and voices, with Mavis John taking the lead and the 25-member Bishop Anstey High School Choir in supportive role, all accompanied by Pantasy Pan Ensemble, under the musical direction of Duvonne Stewart.

'Each island will be allowed to have its own interpretation, according to its heritage but without altering the fundamentals of the work.'

Our own interpretation is a nice one written already by PATRICK CASTAGNE!!!

Side by Side We Stand, Islands of the Blue Caribbean Sea, This our Native Land, We Pledge Our Lives to Thee... Can't get better than that in my opinion!
