Football / UK Warrior Nation Sweat-May Bank Holiday Weekend !!
« on: April 20, 2006, 06:51:52 AM »
Calling all UK Warrior Nation Crew:salute:

We are trying to put together a UK Warrior Nation Sweat/Football Picnic.

We need to know from NOW what the UK members think would be the best option regarding location. Some of the options with the better facilities etc will obviously incur a cost which is why we need to coordinate from now.

Much of this research was done by Superoli, so if need any additional info or to give your contact details, PM either himself or me!!

Below are the details of the options to vote for!!! We need to know NUMBERS ASAP

Who Say Sweat ?!!?  :wavetowel:

FLi

1) Power league Barnet --- Event 5-a-side Tournament Date 28th May
Times The below are proposed timings only, which can be changed to suit your requirements:12.30pm Registration 12.45pm Team Briefing 1.00pm Kick-off approx 5.00pm Tournament Finish 5.15pm Presentation of Trophies / AnnouncementsTime for Changing / Showers6.30pm Depart Venue.

Number of teams 10 teams ----- Format Champions League Format with Knockout stages – i.e. Group stages, Quarter finals, Semi finals and Final

• Inclusive hire of floodlit all weather 5 a-side pitches • Each team will receive a minimum of 3 games, totalling 45 minutes of football • All matches officiated by fully qualified FA Referees • One engraved Tournament Cup for the Winning Team, plus 7 individual winners and 7 runners-up medals• Balls & Bibs provided • All Match Fixtures compiled, drawn & Professionally managed by Powerleague staff • Full use of Powerleague site, hospitality facilities including bar and lounge areas, & announcements using PA System

Up to 8 players per team Powerleague’s fee would be: £75 + vat per team (£11 a player assuming a team of 8)

Advantages: Proper football courts, medals, refs, bar, facilities etc, can play our music

Disadvantages: Costs, need to have 10 teams , location (not so easy for people not living north London), need to have at least 80 players

2) Straight rental of pitches - 5 a side pitches the cost is £49.95 per pitch per hour or alternatively one 7a side pitch with the new third generation rubber crumb surface, this is £69.50 per pitch hour. Probably need 4 hours rental

Advantages: Proper football courts, bar, facilities etc (in case of bad weather)

Disadvantages: Cost, no medals refs etc, location (not so easy for people not living in north London) not the best for liming

3) Hendon football ground - semi pro ground with stands etc (around £400-500 for the day)

Advantages: good field, proper stands to lime in, facilities

Disadvantages: costs, location, no medals refs etc (not so easy for people not living in north London)

4) The Park ---- A basic park such as Golders Green, Clapham Common, Hyde Park or Regents Park.
For Regents Park :There are no pitches to rent after April but we could just go down and occupy a space from early and put cones down (the same place they have the Trini lime in august) there are toilets and parking close by. Obviously this would be the cheapest option as there is no rental etc and we would just get like £15 a team to cover costs of buying cones, bibs and maybe some some small goals (I have two already). I spoke to them this morning and once we don't have loud music and tents etc they are fine with it.

Advantages: el cheapo, central and easy to get to, more conducive to liming for guests and friends

Disadvantages: no cover, bar, facilities etc (there are toilets there though) no music

Football / Owen Undergoes Minor Surgery

Owen setback tightens screw on England
By George Caulkin

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,293-2102696,00.html

GIVEN THAT Sven-Göran Eriksson has long maintained that prospects for England’s success at the World Cup finals will be determined by the extent of his injury list, there can only be distress at Michael Owen suffering a setback in his recuperation from a fractured metatarsal. While the striker hopes to be playing again within four weeks, he now has little scope to prove his fitness before Germany.

Owen last night underwent what his club described as a “minor procedure” at a Manchester hospital to tighten a screw that was inserted in his foot in January. The forward has not appeared for Newcastle United since he suffered the injury at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Eve and although his mood remains upbeat, he can scarcely afford another breakdown before the tournament.

The news will be troubling to the England head coach. If all goes to plan, Owen will be training inside two or three weeks and the 26-year-old aims to return to the Newcastle first team for the home game against West Bromwich Albion on April 22. He would then have only two more competitive matches before the end of the season — against Birmingham City and Chelsea — in which to hone his conditioning.

Eriksson names his provisional 26-man World Cup squad on May 8, a week before the official Fifa deadline, when three standby players will be discarded. England then play friendly internationals against Hungary on May 30 and Jamaica on June 3 and while, theoretically, Owen should be fresh for his side’s start to the competition the next weekend, he can hardly hope to have reached peak form.

“I have been reassured by Michael’s surgeon that the World Cup is still well within Michael’s compass,” Glenn Roeder, the Newcastle caretaker manager, said of Owen, who had felt pain in his foot earlier this week and subsequently had a scan on Thursday. “People are getting hysterical, but we very much expect him to get a couple of games in before the end of the season.”

If Owen returns against West Bromwich, he will not have kicked a ball in anger for 16 weeks, four more than his surgeon’s most optimistic prognosis at the time of the original injury. As England’s chief attacking threat and a world-class talent who inspires fear and respect from opponents — he has scored 35 goals in 75 appearances for his country — his continuing absence is alarming.

It also heralds more gloom for a club that paid Real Madrid a record £16.5 million for him last August. Owen has scored seven times in his ten league games for Newcastle, but his goal ratio is balanced by the scarcity of his appearances in a black-and-white shirt. Supporters will be hoping he does not take advantage of a contractual clause that allows him to discuss a transfer with clubs that bid £12 million for him this summer.

Attracting a high-profile manager to succeed Graeme Souness may go some way to appeasing Owen’s ambitions and Shay Given yesterday became the first Newcastle player to advocate the appointment of Martin O’Neill. The Ulsterman is the favoured candidate of Freddy Shepherd, the chairman, but Given’s endorsement is significant.

The Ireland goalkeeper is in the midst of unresolved contract negotiations — he has one more season of his deal to serve — but he spoke about the prospect of O’Neill’s arrival as “very exciting”, adding, “if you asked the players, I think the general consensus would be the same”.

There has already been one meeting between O’Neill and Shepherd; further movement is unlikely before the end of the season, by which time the FA will have decided on a replacement for Eriksson and O’Neill will have heard further reports about his wife’s medical condition.

Football / Henry is Ours, Say Barca!!

Henry is ours, say Barcelona
The Times

By Matt Hughes

BARCELONA have raised the stakes in the battle for Thierry Henry by claiming to have secured the services of the Arsenal striker. Sources close to Joan Laporta, the Barcelona president, have told Spanish journalists that the club have reached a verbal agreement with the Frenchman to join them in the summer. It has even been suggested that Henry will be presented at the Nou Camp before the World Cup.

Arsenal are furious at the claims, although they have resisted the temptation to condemn Barcelona publicly for fear of disturbing Henry’s delicate contract talks. The 28-year-old has been offered a four-year deal worth £100,000 a week, but despite repeatedly insisting that he wants to stay, he has yet to sign it.

Arsenal believe that Barcelona are talking up their hopes of capturing Henry in an attempt to unsettle him. It is not the first time that they have used such tactics. Laporta told supporters in December that he would do everything in his power to sign Henry, but he has a habit of making grand promises that do not materialise, winning the club’s presidential elections in 2003 on the back of a supposed agreement with Manchester United to sign David Beckham when it was clear that the England captain wanted to join Real Madrid.

Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has threatened before to report Barcelona to Fifa, world football’s governing body, for “tapping up” Henry and his anger has not diminished. Any verbal agreement between Barcelona and Henry without the consent of Arsenal would constitute an illegal approach, although Wenger is again expected to stop short of making a formal complaint.

“I am not happy with Barcelona,” he said in December. “They have broken a code of behaviour and I feel it is not very respectful towards us. I am worried about it. If they want to sign him, all they have to do is call me up because he has one year left on his contract. I don’t care who you are in football, if you are from Barcelona or Doncaster, you have to respect the rules.”

Of further disquiet is Barcelona’s claim that Henry will cost them relatively little. The Spaniards believe that, as a result of Fifa regulations that enable players over the age of 28, who have been at a club for more than three years, to buy themselves out of the final year of their contract, the maximum compensation they will be obliged to pay is £10 million — and that he could come even cheaper.

Arsenal’s interpretation of the regulations is that they would hope to raise closer to £20 million if they are forced to sell their captain this summer.

Sources close to Henry insist that he has not agreed anything with anyone, although the longer he goes without signing his new contract, the greater the likelihood that he will leave North London.

Henry declared his desire to end his career at Arsenal at the start of the year, although he included the caveat that they must prove that they shared his ambitions. With the club able to meet his financial demands, Henry’s concerns are of a footballing nature and it is understood that he is waiting to see if Arsenal qualify for next season’s Champions League before making his decision. They are through to the quarter-finals of this season’s competition but only fifth in the Barclays Premiership.

Although Wenger hopes to convince Henry to stay, he has begun the search for potential replacements, with Fernando Torres the most likely candidate. Atlético Madrid quoted Tottenham Hotspur £20 million for the Spain striker during the January transfer window and although Arsenal would also balk at such a fee, they are in a position to outbid their neighbours.

Arsenal also plan to open contract talks with Ashley Cole in the next few weeks, although it is unlikely that he will extend his stay. The England defender has two years left on his contract but wants to leave after falling out with them over the Chelsea “tapping-up” affair, with Real favourites to sign him in the summer.

Football / UK Guardian Columnist is rooting for TnT
« on: March 13, 2006, 07:28:53 AM »
Perusing through this morning's UK Guardian, couldn't help but smile when I saw this article by columnist Stuart Jeffries  ;)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Columnists/Column/0,,1729641,00.html

The Kaiser Chiefs are favourites to  perform England's World Cup song. Perhaps they need only update I Predict a Riot, given how many police are working to prevent English fans festooning German stadia with Teutonic viscera.
If only leading feminist Ken Follett would write the lyrics. The multi-millionaire Labour supporter (is there another kind?) is fresh from penning words for lady MPs to sing on International Women's Day. He wrote: "My eyes have seen the women in the Commons and the Lords/They have trampled out the prejudice that was so long ignored ... " I hope he could write something equally inspiring for England. But then I am rooting for Trinidad and Tobago.

We as Trinbagonians are fickle and suffer from the 7 day syndrome. I bet few people remember the guy in the oval who held up that banner with 'Latapee and Blight Yorke'  and everyone in the crowd seemed to be in agreement when we called latas and dwight sell outs when for reasons which we do not have sufficient informaiton about retired from international football.

Now both of them have  shown incredible patrotism and dedication on the field as they yet again sacrifice their careers for thei country.

Let's not let the same thing happen with Stern. 5 Crucial goals in 3 games speaks volumes and we should support our warriors through thick and thin!!!

FLi'll be in Germany 2006

Football / R&B Concert or TnT v Guatemala Part Deux on Sept 3rd!!
« on: August 21, 2005, 12:01:02 PM »
I don't know what anti-soca warriors concert promoter decided to put the 'Biggest R&B Concert to Hit Trinidad' on the same day that we need Trinidad's support to beat Guatemala at Home!!!

I know the artistes, Jagged Edge, 112, and Joe, would appeal mainly to the ladies. But u know guys does follow the ladies and men mightn't want to fork out money for both events.

It also depends on what time the concert is set to start.

In any case, we'll separate the Real Soca Warriors from the Bandwagoners, although we do NEED that support
