General Discussion / Taxi Driver Rapes Male Passenger..
« on: June 23, 2009, 06:21:20 AM »
A man was raped by a taxi driver who followed him into his block of flats after driving him home.

The 20-year-old victim got into the cab at Quay Street in Manchester city centre in the early hours of Sunday after a night out.

When the taxi arrived at Salford Quays, the driver refused to take payment.

The man went into his flat block, but was grabbed by the driver as he waited for the lift. He was raped in the stairwell of the building, police said.

'Traumatised'

Det Sgt Julie Connor, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This was a brutal attack on a young man who has been left feeling traumatised.

"We want to appeal to taxi drivers in the city centre to tell us if they recognize the description he has given of his attacker."

The rapist was described as being in his late 20s or early 30s, dark skinned, possibly Asian, and of middle eastern or Iraqi appearance.

He was about 5ft 9in tall and slightly overweight with short brown or black hair and unshaven with a beard and brown eyes. He was wearing a brown leather jacket and a dark green jumper.

Police said the taxi was a VW Passat and had an illuminated taxi sign on the roof.

French idol Tyrone Mears wants to play for England

By Neil Mcleman 28/03/2009

Tyrone Mears has declared himself available for England despite playing a friendly for Jamaica last month.

The Stockport-born defender is proving a hit on a year's loan from Derby to French giants Marseille, scoring the goal to take them through to the last eight of the UEFA Cup last week.

But after suffering a serious knee injury last year, the son of Jamaican parents agreed to play for John Barnes' Reggae Boyz in a friendly international at the New Den last month to gain match practice.

Now, with Marseille second in the League and with the Champions League beckoning, the 26-year-old full-back wants to play for the land of his birth. "It is a funny situation with Jamaica," said the former Preston and West Ham player. "I played one friendly game for them because I wasn't playing and I needed a game. "But I can still play for England and I still want to play for England.   I am hoping I can have a good end to the season and we'll see what happens."

Recommended to Marseille by Kevin Keegan, Mears did not make his debut until mid-January because of his knee but is now holding down a regular place.

In the last fortnight he has tasted victory in the historic PSG-Marseille big match rivalry in Paris, before knocking out Ajax in the Amsterdam Arena.

"Playing in the play-off final for Derby was quite a big game but these two matches have definitely been the biggest I have ever played in," Mears said.

"I didn't know how big the game against Paris was - the atmosphere was amazing. I hope to play in a few more big games now."

Calypso-soca unity

Thursday, January 29th 2009

History was created at the Cascadia Hotel, St Ann's, Port of Spain on Tuesday when the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) and Caribbean Prestige Foundation for the Performing Arts (CPF) signed a memorandum of understanding. This sees an attempt by those involved in the artform to plug a widening gap between calypso and soca.

It agrees that TUCO will now represent CPF, the organisers of the BMobile International Soca Monarch competition and the Play Whe Groovy Soca Monarch Competition as both bodies have recognised the importance of establishing an alliance that would actively pursue the development and growth of the two genres.

"TUCO has represented calypsonians and pursued a strategic development role within the art form for many years. Caribbean Prestige Foundation for the Performing Arts applauds this richness in experiences and leadership and would welcome the opportunity of having TUCO represent the Foundation in deliberations with the government of Trinidad and Tobago," the MOU states.

According to the MOU signed by CPF executive president Gregory Fernandez and TUCO president Eric Taylor, aka Pink Panther, the two bodies have agreed on the following;

-The organisations will share expertise for education and training in those areas of common interest

-Mutual recognition of each other's competitions

-Developing and maintaining a research library

-Providing business representation for calypsonians and soca artists

Fernandes commented, "This is a strategic alliance for the development of the art form. We are now represented by a body who deals with everything calypso. TUCO will make representation on our behalf."
