Entertainment & Culture Discussion / Phase 2 to compete with Machel song
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:15:54 PM »
Soca superstar Machel Montano has recorded a song entitled "Magic Drums", which will be played by defending Panorama champion Phase II Pan Groove in this year's instalment of the National Panorama competition.

The song was written by the son of the late Lord Kitchener and musical director of Montano's HD Family Kernel Roberts, and will be arranged by Phase II band leader Len "Boogsie" Sharpe in time for the upcoming competition, which begins on January 27 with preliminary judging in the panyards.

"Magic Drums" is soon to be released and its melody will also serve as theme music for a television series entitled The HD Family Workout, which is to begin airing on CCN TV6 soon.

This series will highlight the fitness regime of Montano and his HD Family as they prepare for Carnival 2009, and will feature diet and exercise tips and routines from trainer Francis Alexander.

Montano is gearing up for an exciting Carnival season, with new music being released almost daily, in addition to the forthcoming launch of his long-awaited children's book, Boy Boy and The Magic Drum, as well as two major events being produced by his camp.

The soca star's annual concert event, The Alternative Concept, is scheduled for February 14 and promises a gamut of surprises, including guest artistes and performers from around the globe.

Now in its seventh year, the theme for this instalment is "Heavenly Drums".

Montano and his new manager, Anthony Chow Lin On, will also introduce a new event to the Carnival calendar, with a children's musical version of The Alternative Concept, scheduled for February 7 at a venue to be announced.

Fans of the veteran entertainer can look forward to a more eco-friendly Montano, as he has also signed on as a spokesman for a new environmentally conscious initiative which will be launched soon.

General Discussion / OBAMA may visit T&T in April 2009
« on: November 07, 2008, 12:12:59 PM »

Arthur Gray, Advisor to the National Secretariat for the Fifth Summit of the Americas addresses the Caribbean Civil Society Forum; Dr Riyad Insanally, OAS Representative in Trinidad and Tobago; Ambassador Albert Ramdin and Trinidad and Tobago Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon at the Caribbean Sub-Regional Civil Society Forum of the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain on October 31, 2008]

US President elect Barack Obama may visit Port of Spain as early as April 17-19, 2009 for the Fifth Summit of the Americas. US Presidents are usually regular attendees of the Summit of the Americas.

If not the first, it would be one of the first Summits Obama attends as President of the United States, making Port of Spain a possible destination from where the new US President will demonstrate what "change" means, in terms of US foreign policy towards its neighbours.

The theme of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, "Securing Our Citizens' Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability" was developed in close consultation with member countries and partner institutions of the Summit Process.

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago, in preparing the Concept Paper on the issues to be considered both in the lead up to and at the Fifth Summit, was mindful of the need to make this Summit more people-centred and inclusive.

"This Summit must be able to deliver tangible and measurable outcomes that will make a real, positive difference to the lives of people in the region," the National Summit Secretariat says.

The focus of the Fifth Summit will be on human prosperity, energy security, climate change and sustainable development, all key items on the Democratic agenda.

Organisation of American States Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Albert Ramdin also expects natural disasters and the global financial crisis to appear on the Heads of State agenda at next year's Summit.

If Obama is as popular in Trinidad and Tobago as the polls say, the crowds gathered outside the 5th Summit of the Americas may not be protesters but doting fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their hero.

Naps win third Big Five title.
...get past Mucurapo 2-1.
By: Kern De Freitas (Express).

Naparima College equalled the record for the most "national" wins in schools football when they beat Mucurapo Secondary Comprehensive 2-1 to lift their third BG T&T Secondary Schools Football League "Big Five" title at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella yesterday.

"Naps" joined a select club which already includes San Fernando Technical Institute, as well as Tobago's Signal Hill Senior Comprehensive, each with nine wins.

Naparima's unmatched six InterCol titles bolsters their record as a strong force in schools football.

Mucurapo needed their talisman and captain Kevin Molino to have a good match in order to foil Naparima's steady, time-tested approach. He was a few shades off his best, but still managed to give Naparima's defenders a workout.

He eventually scored with six minutes left in the match after a wonderful through pass from Mathew Waldron, but another goal was not on the cards. Neither was history for the Mucurapo Road side.

Naps got their win on first half goals from skipper Shahdon Winchester and Christopher Joseph, while Mucurapo scored late to make the game interesting, but not enough to change their fate.

Molino wove through players with ease at times and forced good saves out of Jugmohan. But if Mucurapo were to be rewarded for their persistent attacks, it should have been the drive from more than 25 metres out from substitute Allan Joseph that needed Jugmohan's best save to stay out of the net.

Time and time again Mucurapo plugged away with attempts at goal, fighting harder with every passing minute. But Naps' steely defence maintained their reputation for stepping up on big occasions and "Compre" were hard-pressed to find a way through.

Mucurapo's chance at their first Big Five title and their first national honour in 25 years lay limp when Winchester hit their net in just the fifth minute. He was fed through on the left by Joshua Bachan and, spotting Mucurapo goalkeeper Michael Duff idly off his line, chipped over him to the defence's dismay.

Before that, Mucurapo first threatened to open the scoring, with Mutar Taylor just failing to skate home the ball in the opening minute.

Naps handed in their first response in the fourth, with Bachan forcing Duff to parry the ball off the upright. One minute later, Naps were in the lead.

They doubled that lead in the 16th thanks to another smart move from Winchester, who collected in the box and held off a hesitant Mucurapo defender before teeing up for Joseph to blast home.

Mucurapo did provide some nervous moments for "Naps" at the other end, but what resembled big stage jitters crept in just before the finishing touch.

Despite that, both Molino and winger Terrence Clarke came close to pulling one before the break, denied only by diving saves from Naps custodian Nicholas Jugmohan.

At the break, Mucurapo went in needing some divine inspiration to boost their hopes of getting back into the match.  Molino gave them a brief glimmer of hope, but it was not enough to give them the title they so desperately crave.

Earlier yesterday, Debe High School gained their first lien on the Secondary Schools Football League  Girls trophy when they edged St Augustine Secondary Comprehensive 1-0.

A timely 61st minute strike by second half substitute Afisha Clement, just nine minutes away from a showdown at the penalty spot, made the difference between the two evenly-matched teams.

"Debe! Must win! Debe! Must win!" chanted their supporters. Ten minutes later, the referee's whistle made the boast ring true.
Big Five - Naparima crowned Big Five 2008 Champions; Naparima 2 - 1 Mucurapo

Schoolsoccernet.com - South Zone Champions, Naparima took all the plaudits today in the North vs South battle in the Big Five Final as they ran out 2-1 winners over North Zone Champions Mucurapo at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Naparima were the marginally the better team in an entertaining fixture, although Mucurapo piled on the pressure in the dying stages of the game and pulled a goal back in the 87th minute to set up a nerve racking finish for ‘Naps’.
Naparima struck twice in the first 15 minutes of the game in a half where both teams created numerous chances.Naparima's Shahdon Winchester had a man-of-the-match performance and proved to be quite a handful for the Mucurapo defense.

Winchester opened the scoring shortly after the referee blew his whistle to start the game after controlling a ball superbly and then deftly lobbing the advancing Mucurapo goalkeeper Michael Duff.

Winchester was involved in Naparima's second goal as well when he laid the ball on a plate for his teammate, Joseph, who made no mistake as he buried the ball into the back of the net.

Both teams continued to search for more goals in the first half and the fans were truly entertained, but the first period would end with the 2-0 score-line.
Mucurapo came out strong immediately after the restart, but the Naparima defense withstood the onslaught.
The pace of the game settled for long periods of the second half with both teams battling in midfield.
Naparima had several chances to add to their tally on the counter attack, but were guilty of squandering a few gilt edged chances.
'Compre' would punish them for their lack of finishing and ensure they endured a nervous ending to the game when Kevin Molino put the ball into the back of the Naparima goal in the 87th minute.

Mucurapo continued to press till the end for the equalizer but could not break down the resolute Naparima defense for a second time. The blast of the final whistle sparked mad celebrations in the stands and on the pitch.

Congratulations to Naparima College, 2008 Big Five Champions.

Fireball climbs on Billboard chart
Tuesday, September 30th 2008

Just about one year after it took Europe by storm, Fireball's "What I Want" has been released in the USA on the Record Plant Records label (a division of world famous Record Plant Studio), one of the most famous recording studios in the world housing superstars like Kanye West, Akon, Will.i.am, the Pissycat Dolls.

One week after its release "What I Want" entered the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart at number 45, and now four weeks later, it quickly climbed to number 17, showing no signs of slowing down. Fireball is now in the company of superstars such as Madonna, Ne Yo and Rihanna on the same chart, in a mad race to the very top.

With such success it should come as a surprise that this very same single was played during the 2008 Olympic Women's Beach Volley Ball Semi Finals in Beijing, China during the US vs. Brazil game.

Amazed by "What I Want's" unique style, an enormously successful remixer, chart-topping solo artist, globetrotting DJ Chris Cox, who remixes for Britney Spears amongst many others, has remixed the song. This new remix will also be released in the US market (radio, club circuit etc.) in two weeks time.

And if that is not enough, across the globe "What I Want" has also been released this August in the UK under the Ministry of Sound label, one of the major dance labels in the world.

Fireball is now working hard in-studio to release his follow-up single both for the soon approaching Carnival season as well as his new international fans.

St Vincent ignores US call to end relationship with Iran

CMC
Friday, September 19, 2008

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) - The St Vincent and the Grenadines government says it will continue to pursue closer ties with Iran despite objections from the United States.

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said that the matter
had been raised by US Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Mary Ourisman, during a recent visit to Kingstown. The American diplomat is reported to have told Gonsalves that Washington was not pleased with the move to pursue closer ties with Iran, given its nuclear programme and alleged state-sponsored terrorism.

But Gonsalves said while he understood the US position, Washington had not been as vocal over efforts by European countries, including Germany, that trade and have close relationships with Tehran.

"The matter comes down simply at the end of it, as I see it, to 'do you trust the leadership of a small country to be sufficiently mature to handle relations and do you trust our democracy to be sufficiently resilient to handle relations'?" he said.

The Vincentian leader said he was convinced that his country's democracy and its leaders were "strong enough to handle our foreign relations".

"Our democracy is sufficiently strong to handle any set of relations with any country, anywhere in the world, and to do so openly," he said.

St Vincent and the Grenadines earlier this year announced that it was establishing diplomatic relations with Iran and that the Middle Eastern country had also agreed to assist with the construction of the US$200-million international airport here.

TEMPO to rock SKN on Independence Day

Friday September 05 2008

by Precious Mills

Come silver jubilee anniversary day, nationals of St. Kitts/Nevis are being called to jump up, groove and sway to the multi-genre of national, regional and international artiste line-up scheduled to the TEMPO turns three: past, present and future TEMPO forever concert.

The promised massive staging is scheduled to kick off on Independence Day (19 Sept.,) at the FM Entertainment Grounds, Long Point, in sister isle, Nevis, commencing at 7 p.m.

Speaking to TEMPO Country Sales Representative for St. Kitts/Nevis, Brian Mills, it was revealed that TEMPO will be celebrating its ‘turning three’ accomplishment in other islands including Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica and has acknowledged that the significant 25th Silver Jubilee Independence anniversary was in mind when the Federation was selected as being the first island to celebrate with.

“We are celebrating our Independence in grand style and I could not think of a better place.” Mills remarked that nationals “should be proud”, noting that TEMPO has a strong affinity with Nevis.

The TEMPO country sales representative for St. Kitts/Nevis added that the “all-star line-up” encompasses the TEMPO third birthday theme as it will feature past and present artistes. According to him, a few TEMPO original shows will be filmed around the same time of the concert.

These include Rise and Shine, Badness Outta Style, TEMPO new items and Live and Direct. Mills encourages patrons to come out on the night of the concert to enjoy themselves. Commenting on the security at the show, he highlighted that TEMPO will ensure “nothing but the best”. Further, he said “we will be flying in our own security” as well.

The SUN understands that under the auspices of the St. Kitts/Nevis government, the Nevis Cultural Development Foundation and telecommunications firm, Cable & Wireless, are on board as platinum sponsors. Other major sponsors include LIAT, Tropical Shipping, Lefco, Carib Beer, Four Seasons Resort, Nelson Springs Condo, Mount Nevis Hotel, while RBTT and Bank of Nevis has partnered also.

The TEMPO country sales representative for St. Kitts/Nevis is appealing to individuals who have the “TEMPO spirit” to come on board as volunteers, in helping to assist with the behind the scene productions and set-up. Interested individuals can contact Mills at 663-5295.

The show is said to highlight over 16 acts, including the Badness Outta Style artiste – Mr. King, Sparrow, Machel Montano HD, Patrice Roberts and Farmer Nappy, Destra, Claudette Peters, Wayne Marshall, Daville, Etana, Denise Belfon, Ziggy Ranking, Kasanova Band and King Bingi.

Carnival arrived early when Alison Hinds turned the crowd at S.O.B.’s into a shouting, singing, flag-waving, hip-grinding ruckus on Tuesday night. Along with many other calypso, soca and reggae musicians from the West Indies, Ms. Hinds will be performing around New York City through Labor Day, when the West Indian American Carnival parades along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.

Ms. Hinds, who was born in London and settled in Barbados at 11, can rightfully claim the title she used for her 2007 album, “Soca Queen” (1720 Entertainment). She’s a smiling, trumpeting voice of female empowerment in soca, the modernized calypso music of carnival in Trinidad, Barbados and, this weekend, New York. “Who running t’ings in this world?” she sang at S.O.B.’s. “It’s the ladies!”

Ms. Hinds, 38, joined the band Square One in 1986, and with it became the first woman in Barbados to win the Road March title with the song “Ragamuffin” in 1996, starting a string of hits for the group. She left it when she married and had a daughter in 2004, and returned leading her own band with a hit praising women’s independence: “Roll It Gal,” which urges, “When dem fly up in yuh face gyal/Make dem know dey place.”

She underlines the message on “Soca Queen” with a song revived from her Square One days, “Ladies Rule,” and when she sang it at S.O.B.’s, she praised women who have their own cars, homes, men and hair.

Working with songwriters and producers from the Caribbean and beyond, Ms. Hinds has often fused the brisk soca beat with Jamaican dancehall reggae, and she dips into North American R&B, European electro and other styles. One of Square One’s biggest hits was “Faluma,” a song from Suriname that also appears on “Soca Queen.” Ms. Hinds’s album includes a Latin-tinged heartbreak ballad, “Island Girl,” and at S.O.B.’s she sang it with a sustained tenderness she doesn’t need in her upbeat songs.

But she devoted most of her two-hour set to songs with the carnival spirit, singing about dancing, partying, sex and her devotion to soca itself. Every few songs she worked the crowd like a cheerleader, directing them to raise hands and wave. She brought men onstage to demonstrate her considerable expertise at “wining” — winding the waist, slow and fast, in a kind of vertical lap dance that strangers at carnival time share in the streets (and on the S.O.B.’s dance floor). Over a galloping beat and a synthesizer hook like a fanfare she summed up her message in one gleefully encompassing word: “Togetherness!”

NEW YORK, NY August 2008 - Billboard Magazine, the most prestigious mainstream music publication, this week poses the question if whether Machel Montano can take the soca genre into the mainstream pop culture. With its bold headline, if the team at Billboard is asking, then Trinidad-born Machel Montano must be doing something right.

Billboard begs the question in the current issue (cover date August 30, 2008) that's on newsstands this week, in its first feature ever on a soca artist. The article has since been picked up and distributed by REUTERS, the ultimate international news reporting agency, and has appeared on Yahoo News, among other major web sources. And Montano, crowned "Soca King" by fans from and beyond the Caribbean, is taking it all in stride.

Singing soca since he was a child, Montano is now poised on the brink of mainstream success. And mainstream media, such as Billboard Magazine, know it. Montano is wrapping up appearances at Notting Hill Carnival in the U.K. before he heads to New York City this week, where he will perform at the infamous S.O.B.'s on Thursday, August 27. Montano's fans will get a double dose as he brings the biggest show from Trinidad Carnival to New York, and to one of the most exclusive venues in Manhattan. The show is billed as "Alternative Concept New York" and will be held on Saturday, August 30 at Cipriani Wall Street, which has played host to other musical heavyweights including Akon, Fergie, Rihanna and also P. Diddy's über-exclusive 30th birthday bash.

As much as the initiative to earn mainstream play, Montano stays loyal to his fans that have supported him for 26 years now. In keeping with that notion, he strategically chose Cipriani Wall Street for "AC New York" because it brings the show to downtown Manhattan, and just mere minutes from Brooklyn and Queens and into the backyard of his loyal and longtime supporters. Also with vested efforts on fostering Caribbean unity, Montano headlined at Barbados' Crop Over festival earlier this month, and in lieu of bringing more steam to that country's national celebrations, enlisted the help of renown rapper Lil Jon and Latin hip-hop star Pitbull.

Montano is currently enjoying airplay in urban markets for his remix with Pitbull and Lil Jon, "Defense - The Anthem," and its subsequent video, which just debuted on MTV Base and Trace-TV all across Europe. The video entered the Latin Top 20 Video Charts in the U.S. this month and stays strong this week, coming in at number 17 among all Latin videos aired in the United States.

Now Montano returns to the Big Apple to partake in New York's carnival celebrations. In addition to his live shows, he will play host to urban radio giant HOT97's Labor Day Jouvert Party featuring Elephant Man on Sunday, August 31 at The Madison in Manhattan. Then the million fans expected to line Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway on Monday, September 1 will be in for a treat when Montano will be a special guest on HOT97's Labor Day float. As Montano states in the Billboard article, "I gather people together, let them have a good time and I feel good about that." Perfectly put by the international ambassador for soca music - a genre that's all about feeling good.

What about Track & Field / House and Land
« on: August 23, 2008, 12:15:35 PM »

There was a Carnival-style jump-up on the homestraight at the Bird's Nest stadium, here in Beijing, China, yesterday.

But there was no need for a music truck, for Keston Bledman, Marc Burns, Emmanuel Callender and Richard Thompson were making music of their own.

"Yeah, we were singing," Thompson explained. "It's a song Emmanuel Callender composed and he always has all of us singing it. It's a song called 'Wine and Jam'. But instead of 'Wine and Jam,' we were saying this one for the Prime Minister, 'House and Land.'"

The hearty laugh that followed Thompson's explanation in no way diminishes the debt of gratitude owed to the men's 4x100 metres relay team by all of Trinidad and Tobago.

The T&T quartet clocked 38.06 seconds to strike silver in yesterday's Olympic Games sprint relay final. Jamaica produced a 37.10 seconds world record run to grab gold.

"Definitely a great accomplishment," Thompson told the Express after the race, "for us to cop our first (Olympic) 4x1 medal ever. We didn't have a doubt that we would be able to come in here and medal. Obviously, we came in with the intention to win but it was a great run by Jamaica and we can't complain coming second to them. So we're definitely celebrating right now, and we hope the rest of T&T is pleased with our performance."

Yesterday's sprint relay silver was the second runner-up finish for Torpedo Thompson at Beijing 2008. Last Saturday, the 23-year-old sprinter was second in the 100m final.

"The 100 silver was sweet, but I think the feeling of winning a silver medal with the team is much sweeter. It shows it's not just me or it's not just an individual accomplishment, but we are able to come together as a team and represent Trinidad and Tobago. That unity and togetherness was there. "We just want to dedicate this one to the entire Trinidad and Tobago, all the supporters, the fans and everyone who has been supporting-red, white and black, this one is for you. We thank you for the support throughout the 2008 season."

Team T&T earned silver with two alternates, making the achievement even more impressive. First, Bledman came in for the injured Brown, the 20-year-old sprinter running in both Thursday's qualifying round and yesterday's final. And Callender made his Olympic debut in the championship race, replacing Aaron Armstrong, who ran the third leg on Thursday but was forced out of the final by a hamstring injury.

"We could have doubted each other when Darrel got injured," said Thompson, "and when Aaron Armstrong got injured. There were so many obstacles in the way, but we had faith in God and belief in ourselves, and we were able to pull it together.

"We brought two reserves here in case of any injuries and we knew that they would be able to step up to the plate if they had to. I had faith in them."

Thompson said the goal is to turn silver into gold at the 2009 World Track and Field Championships, in Berlin, Germany.

"We're hoping by next year at the World Champs we can step out to the plate and beat Jamaica. I made a big improvement from last year, Marc has been running much better than last year--all these guys as well, so as long as we continue to show that improvement there's no telling what can happen."

The Beijing 2008 double silver medallist made an appeal to the youth of the nation.

"I just want to shout out and reach out to all the young ones, to be positive and understand the importance of an education and sport, and to just stay away from drugs and violence and that kind of thing," Thompson ended. "Do something positive with your life."

Soca and Calypso Artists meet and greet fans

By Patricia Thangaraj
Hundreds of Barbadians gathered on the ground floor of Cave Shepherd yesterday to meet their favourite artist and get their copy of the CD Feels Nas: Straight from BIM - Volume 2 signed.

The biggest attraction was Machel Montano, who was a hit among the old and young. He said that the Crop Over season was going well, but was very hectic, having just come off from performing at the Wadadah Fete at Kensington Oval the previous night. Montano, who is in Barbados for two and a half weeks as opposed to the usual two days, said that he choose to come here instead of going to Toronto for Caribana because he has been going there for the last 10 to 15 years and he wanted to do something different this year. He also wanted to spend more time with his regional fans, who have expressed their appreciation for his music, especially his songs - Tempa Wine, Feels Nas, Push Bumper and Wining Season.

Local artist Tarah, who was also there for the signing, said that the season went well for her, both locally and internationally, where her songs All Nite, Push Back and This is Fete written by Anderson Blood Armstrong are doing well in Toronto, Vancouver and New York.

She has also found success with her music in Trinidad and will head off to this nation after the season is over to do some radio and television interviews with Synergy Television. She stated that when that stations manager, Wendell Naipaul, was visiting Barbados, he fell in love with her song Push Back and invited her to come to Trinidad to be featured on their station Timmy, another local artist who was at Cave Shepherd signing CDs, also said that the season was going well for him, especially with his song Bucket.
