Soca on the Seas to boost Tourism and Culture

Two ministries have invested over TT$400,000 into the inaugural Soca on the Seas three-day all-inclusive Carnival event to be held aboard Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas.

Speaking at the launch of the event on Monday afternoon, Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts, revealed that her Ministry, together with the Ministry of Tourism, has invested TT$450,000 to support the event

She said one of the expected returns from this investment is the attraction of tourists to Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival aboard Royal Caribbean.

“The expected return on investment we expect to see is more tourists coming to our country, to expose the culture of our country to a market that we really want to invest and therefore more arrivals from the areas the cruise will visit and ultimately we would like to see the cruise liner docked in Trinidad for Carnival,” she said.

T&T ranked 2nd best air quality in the world after Seychelles

http://www.cnc3.co.tt/press-release/tt-ranked-2nd-best-air-quality-world-after-seychelles

Trinidad and Tobago has been ranked as the country with the second best air quality in the world.

The ranking is contained in the Environmental Performance Index 2016, released Wednesday.

This country achieved a score of 97.2% in relation to the quality of air, putting T&T just behind the number one ranked country, Seychelles, which achieved a score of 98.24%.

A total of 180 countries are ranked across the globe, with T&T ranked higher than Maldives (97.1%), Iceland (97.04%), Australia (96.13%), Guyana (95.72%) and New Zealand (95.67%).

Bangladesh (21.86%) has been ranked the country with the worst air quality in the world, below China (23.81%) and India (28.07%).

The Air Quality ranking is just one part of the Environmental Performance Index.

While T&T ranks 2nd in that category, it ranks 62nd overall where the environment is concerned, with a score of 74.34%.

That represents a 8.51% improvement over the previous year.

The following are all the rankings that make up T&T's overall score, with "Agriculture" being the lowest:

CATEGORY   RANKING   PERCENTAGE
Health Impacts   23   92.81%
Air Quality   2   97.2%
Water Sanitation   66   86.61%

Cricket Anyone / CARICOM insist WICB be dissolved
« on: February 19, 2016, 12:46:58 PM »

CARICOM insist WICB be dissolved

The time has come for serious action to save West Indies cricket.

Speaking upon his arrival from Belize last night, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said the deterioration of Windies cricket, and the lack of proper management by the WICB, was discussed by CARICOM Heads.
He says based on past discussions with the WICB, Caricom Heads have decided that nothing more can come from discussions with the board.

Dr Rowley said based on recommendations of a cricket sub-committee, Caricom is now insisting that the WICB be dissolved.

“CARICOM will now discontinue any further discussions on the matter with West Indies Cricket Board and the decision of the heads is that we insist that the recommendations of the committee be implemented… Is that the West Indies Cricket Board be dissolved and that an interim body be put in place to begin the restructuring of the management of West Indies Cricket. This is a position which is resolutely opposed by West Indies Cricket Board and in seeking to impose upon us that nothing is wrong with the management of West Indies Cricket.”

Dr Rowley adds that Caricom will also inform the ICC about the position of the Heads of Government.
“Against the background that West Indies Cricket Board has taken the position that they are in fact a body corporate outside of the region… By the interest of the heads of government of the region the heads of government determined on Thursday that we will go over the head of the West Indies Cricket Board and we would inform the ICC and the BCCI of the position of the heads of government and let them be put on notice of the position of the heads of government of the region. In short the heads of CARICOM will have decided that the time has come in trying to save West Indies Cricket. “

The PM says Caricom is also ready to take legal counsel, following the response of the WICB.
He adds that Caricom will again discuss responses of the WICB, at their meeting in July.

Trinidad and Tobago Gymnast Creates New Move, Eyes Rio Olympics

Marisa Dick’s one-of-a-kind balance beam mount now has her name and is in the official Code of Points, a rule book that defines the scoring system for each level of competition in gymnastics.

http://www.theroot.com/articles/news/2016/01/trinidad_and_tobago_gymnast_creates_new_move_eyes_rio_olympics.html

It's a move that had never been done before, but Trinidad and Tobago gymnast Marisa Dick has perfected it and made it her own.

The 18-year-old leaps off a springboard to a split, landing on the balance beam, with legs extended, toes pointed and arms stretched up in artistic flair, pefectly balanced.

It's Dick's signature move, CBC News reports, and she debuted it at the World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, last fall. It was the first time it had ever been done.

And now the daring, one-of-a-kind mount has her name and is in the official Code of Points, which defines the scoring system for each level of competition in gymnastics, the news site notes.

"It's super cool to know that my name will kind of live on in the world of gymnastics," Dick, who has dual Canadian citizenship, said. "It's really exciting. It was one of my biggest goals going into [the] worlds, to get this move named after myself."

According to the report, Dick spent months perfecting her skill, repeating the move more than 20 times a day during her long training sessions with her coach at the Capital City Gymnastics Centre in Alberta, Canada.

"We thought, 'Let's try this'; we knew it had never been done before," said Dick, who ended up finishing 74th in the beam event and 77th all around out of 192 women at the competition, according to CBC News. "You mostly have to be flexible and have some guts."

Guts, the gymnast does have, and now she's eyeing a spot on Trinidad and Tobago's Olympic team at Rio de Janeiro. Dick and her teammate Thema Williams are competing for a spot at the April test, which is part of the qualification process for the 2016 Games.

Dillon is National Security Minister

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20150909/news/dillon-is-national-security-minister

RETIRED Major General Edmund Dillon, who won the Point Fortin seat on a PNM ticket in Monday’s general election, is the new National Security Minister. Dillion was sworn in on Wednesday at Queens Hall, Port of Spain at a function where Dr Keith Rowley also took the oath of office as Prime Minister and Faris Al Rawi was sworn in as Attorney General.

NATIONAL SECURITY NUMBER ONE PRIORITY

Prime Minister Rowley told the media that he decision to appoint Dillon as his first Minister was because the “biggest issue this country has is under national security, ad we wanted to recognise that at the onset”.

Dillion said there would be an immediate review of the security architecture of the country to determine whether it was relevant to the security threats.

He said it would involving determining whether the country had the right people, systems and processes to fight crime and improve security.

Dillon said he would not rule out bringing back the elite crime fighting organisation SAUTT.

Dillon also said that the National Security Ministry would be examining the recent purchase by the former Kamla Persad-Bissessar administration of coastal patrol vessels, to determine whether they were capable of covering the country’s porous maritime borders and exclusive economic zone.

In addition, there would also be an examination of the purchase of armoured vehicles.

Dillion said he planned to meet with acting Commissioner of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff on Wednesday.

He said “we will deal with the security of tenure of the Commissioner of Police. I think it is very important to ensure the police service is steady and they respect his leadership.

Update: 4 killed in Dominica as Tropical Storm Erika hits island

http://www.tv6tnt.com/news/Update-4-killed-in-Dominica-as-Tropical-Storm-Erika-hits-island-323118171.html

A POLICE official in Dominica says at least four people have died in severe flooding and mudslides caused by Tropical Storm Erika on the eastern Caribbean island.

Superintendent Daniel Carbon tells The Associated Press that three of the deaths occurred during a mudslide in the southeast of the island. Authorities recovered the bodies of an elderly blind man and two children from the home.

A fourth death occurred in the capital of Roseau. Carbon says the man was found near his home following a mudslide but the cause of death has not yet been determined.

He says that there have been mudslides and rivers overrunning their banks throughout the island known for its lush forests and steep terrain.
The storm unleashed across the island on Thursday, triggering landslides that destroyed at least 20 homes. Authorities were searching for six people reported missing.

"The situation is grim. It is dangerous," said Ian Pinard, Dominica's communications minister.

About 80 percent of the island was without electricity, and water supply was cut off, authorities said. The main airport was closed due to flooding, with water rushing over cars and at least one small plane, and the scaffolding of some buildings collapsed.

Sabra Luke, who lives in St. Joseph, the chief settlement of Dominica's St. Joseph Parish, told CBSN several roads were flooded and destroyed. She said cellular service on the island had been cut off and many were unable to reach their families. Luke said she thinks many people weren't prepared for the storm and didn't expect it would be this strong.

The main river that cuts through the island's capital overflowed its banks and surging water crashed into the principal bridge that leads into Roseau, whose roads were littered with fallen trees and light poles. Some streets were turned into fast-flowing rivers.

Acting Prime Minister Rayburn Blackmoore asked people to remain calm and stay indoors.

"Do not go sightseeing," he said. "The situation is very dangerous."
Erika was centered about 125 miles west of Guadeloupe, and was moving west at 16 mph with maximum sustained of 50 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Erika was expected to move near Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Thursday and be near or just north of the Dominican Republic on Friday as it heads toward South Florida early next week. The storm was not expected to gain strength in the next two days.

Officials shuttered schools, government offices and businesses across the region and warned of flash flooding because of dry conditions caused by the worst drought to hit the Caribbean in recent years. Authorities warned power and water service might be temporarily cut off.

Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla said the storm could bring badly needed rains to the parched U.S. territory.

"We're happy given the dry conditions, but it does highlight the need to be on alert," he said, adding that heavy downpours could lead to flash floods.

Garcia activated the National Guard as a precaution and asked that everyone head home by noon on Thursday.

The heaviest rains were expected to hit Puerto Rico's eastern region, with the storm expected to pass about 30 miles north of the island overnight Thursday, said Odalys Martinez, with the National Weather Service in San Juan.

The storm also was generating heavy wind in nearby Antigua, and people should prepare for more rain, said Philmore Mullin, director of Antigua and Barbuda's National Office of Disaster Services. He said in a phone interview that no damage or power outages had been reported.
Dozens of flights were canceled in the region, and the U.S. Coast Guard closed all ports in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Government officials in the U.S. Virgin Islands said St. John would experience the heaviest winds at around 58 mph.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Ignacio strengthened into a hurricane. The storm's maximum sustained winds increased Thursday morning to 90 mph.

Hurricane Ignacio was centered about 1,135 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and was moving west-northwest near 13 mph.

Also in the Pacific, a new tropical storm formed Thursday morning. Tropical Storm Jimena had maximum sustained winds near 45 mph and was expected to strengthen to a hurricane Friday. Jimena was centered about 890 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

Hopefully they win next game and advance  :beermug:

Three straight

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20150813/sports/three-straight

Singapore were given a lesson in Calypso as the Trinidad and Tobago netballers played all over them yesterday in the Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia. On their return to the Allphones Arena, the Calypso Girls recorded their highest goal total so far in this year's competition as they strolled unchallenged to a 75-32 victory against Singapore.

T&T wasted no time in establishing the status quo, as they raced to a 21-8 lead after the end of the first quarter. Despite being a crowd favourite down under, the Calypso Girls were playing in front of a half-empty arena, as they were playing in the early match, and the big draw; Australia and South Africa were on the cards later.

That didn't deter T&T, who were determined to keep the wins going. Samantha Wallace was at it again as her conversion rate continued to impress onlookers; she would go on to score 27 goals from 31 attempts. During the contest, she outmatched her opponents physically, which was a recurring theme during the match.

T&T made wholesale changes at the start of the second half, Kalifa McCollin, who started the second half at goal attack, had an impressive third quarter shooting 15/15, and missing just one goal overall for the match T&T continued to dominate all areas of the court. The score was 58-24 after the third quarter.

The rest of the match played out to the same script, as Kielle Connelly, Daystar Swift and Onella Jack marshalled an uncompromising defence throughout which pressed on the Singaporeans throughout the entire match.

In attack, T&T showed their superior athleticism, physicality and flair commonly associated with Caribbean teams. Wallace, who features for UTT in the Courts All Sectors Netball League led the scoring for T&T with 27—she also top scored in all the previous matches.

McColling scored a massive 26 goals of her own, while skipper Joelisa Cooper also put in a strong shift with 14 goals. Veteran centre Rhonda John-Davis proved once again to be the backbone, as she assisted 24 of the goals on the day.

Goal-attack McCollin acknowledged that their next match would be a tougher encounter.

“I think that Samoa is a little bit more physical than the other team so from the start we need to be physical with them and get the game going," she said.

Rhonda John-Davis, a veteran of four previous Netball World Championships and over 150 appearances for T&T, and a leader in her own right in this World Cup campaign so far, echoed the sentiments for her teammates to be cautious.

“Last time we played Samoa, we won by one… it’s good to know we will be meeting them again and we can measure ourselves for the future," she said.

The win means T&T need to beat Samoa in their last encounter of the second eight group to give them a favourable draw in the play-off. The Samoans also defeated Zambia (55-53) and Singapore (46-39), and would be hoping for an upset win today. T&T were scheduled on the court early-morning (6.20am T&T time).

Songs of Freedom tonight
Concert at the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20150730/features/songs-of-freedom-tonight

Freedom in Trinidad and Tobago is expressed through our ostentatious Carnival and in the way people will on an evening sit on the Brian Lara Promenade in Port of Spain and have some drinks, while playing all-fours. But the Emancipation Support Committee (ESC) is making strides in its efforts to ensure that all Trinbagonians understand and one day fully appreciate and enjoy liberation from mental slavery.

Along with the celebratory events taking place across the islands on Emancipation Day, the ESC has organised a series of interactive events at various venues it has dubbed “Forum on Africa and its Diaspora”. The committee's mission is to transcend cultural awareness to all attendees. The events include a youth steelpan concert and a jazz at sunset and pan night that took place yesterday at the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village, set up at the Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain. Then there is a concert tonight featuring artistes from Trinbago, the Caribbean and West Africa.

Joanne Briggs, a consultant at Colthrust PR Ltd, which is working with the ESC to produce the events believes the concerts will minify a subservient mindset within the Caribbean community.

“The aim of the youth pan concert is to highlight the African heritage as it relates to Trinbago,” said Briggs. “The tamboo bamboo and steelpan came from Africa. Our youth and adults can see the [evolution] of the instruments and they will be more aware of the hardships and diaspora.”

Due to the steelpan's strong African origins, Briggs believes the cacophony of melodies can make residents feel liberated. She adds, “While playing the steelpan, the [orchestra] will also be promoting consciousness of what's happening in Africa. The Caribbean people should feel united.”

Local and foreign

artistes to perform

Tonight's concert titled, “Liberation Songs of Freedom”, at the Village features performances by Jamaican acts Queen Ifrica, Everton Blender and Duane Stephenson. There is Kushite and the Mighty Shadow from here at home and the night's special featured artiste, Awa Sangho from Mali. There will be several other local and foreign artistes also taking the stage for this grand show being presented by the ESC.

Awa Sangho was raised in a community called Dire located in the southern edge of the Sahara in northern Mali, about 70 kilometres south of Timbuktu. This region of West Africa is noted for a diversity of world-class musicians and singers. The influential tinge of this region's sub-cultures shaped Sangho, initially through song and dance as a child, through pursuit of performance in school, and exposure to the radio...where Sangho was often found listening, singing, and discovering what makes each singer's voice distinctive.

As a young girl Sangho moved to Abdijan, the capital of Ivory Coast, where she quickly became immersed in its music and dance scene.

The performance group, L'Ensemble Koteba D'Abidjan, noted for a blend of theatre, music and dance, offered Sangho her first opportunity to perform professionally. Later on Sangho along with two other women formed Les Go De Koteba, a splinter group of the original L'Ensemble Koteba D'Abdijan. Their group focus was on music. They produced and recorded five albums which quickly acquired the group's popularity and the experience of world-wide touring. Many of the compositions on these albums were conceived and written by Sangho.

Sangho's lyrics are socially conscious, often communicating reverence for the people who have touched her life, to controversial habits of culture, to message music directed to the youth. The music percolates with the rhythms and resonance of Africa and with the influence of ears that have world-wide exposure.

Sangho has performed with Salif Keita, Manu Dibango, Amadou and Mariam, Habibe Koite, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Joe Claussell, Marc Cary, Bassekou Kouyate, Ballake Sissoko, Vincent Segal, Oumou Sangare and Daniel Moreno. Sangho is currently living in New York City and is soon to be releasing her first solo album.

Diego Martin resident, Shanae Alleyne who has been attending Emancipation Day events religiously for years said, “Each artiste performing in the [Liberation Songs of Freedom] concert is rooted to Africa. I respect how they're from different places but all share a common theme in their music. You learn more than culture, you learn about life.”

According to statistics from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, approximately 90 per cent of 11,863,000 Africans were abused and shipped to the Caribbean to slave owners during the Atlantic Slave Trade. Seemingly paradoxical, this morning's presentation is called Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Symposium. In spite of its tragic reputation, the ESC wants to highlight the positive contributions Africans have made to the Caribbean.

The celebration will conclude with Kambule around dawn tomorrow followed by a flambeau procession. Patrons will participate in a drum procession where they will hold lit candles and recite aboriginal spirituals.

“Every African who made positive attributes to the Caribbean should be honoured,” said Briggs who ended, “(Caribbean) people will gain a deeper appreciation of their heritage beyond what's shown in Trinidad.”
