NBC Olympics added Ato Boldon, Mary Carillo and Cris Collinsworth as correspondents for its Sochi 2014 coverage, joining Maria Sharapova.

Boldon, a four-time Olympic medalist sprinter for Trinidad and Tobago, will make his Winter Olympic broadcast debut. Boldon, 39, covered track and field for NBC Olympics at the 2008 and 2012 Games.

Carillo, working her 12th Olympics, will be the host and interviewer for a documentary on Olympic figure skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding that will air during NBC’s Sochi coverage.

In the documentary, Carillo speaks with the 1992 and 1994 Olympic teammates, tells the story of the tabloid-fueled 1994 Lillehammer Games and the present-day lives of Kerrigan and Harding. Carillo will also continue providing feature vignettes about the people, culture and history of the host country.

Collinsworth, an NBC “Sunday Night Football” analyst, will reprise his correspondent role from the 2008 and 2010 Olympics.

“We’re excited to have Mary, Cris and Ato, accomplished athletes and broadcasters, offer a unique perspective on the Winter Games while also telling the stories about the athletes and host country that make the Games so special,” said Jim Bell, Executive Producer, NBC Olympics.

Olympic champion Walcott returns to action with 84.39m

Share

London 2012 Olympic Games Javelin champion Keshorn Walcott showed that he has wintered well when the Trinidad and Tobago athlete threw 84.39m on home soil at the TnT Elite Twilight Games in Port of Spain on Friday (3).

In his first outing since his Olympic triumph last August last year, Walcott satisfied his adoring fans in the Hasely Crawford Stadium with a big first round effort. The throw was just 19cm short of the 84.58m national record that he had established in London, and the second best throw of his life.

Having just turned 20 last month and so having his first competition in the senior ranks after also capturing a gold medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships last summer, Walcott had fouls in the next two rounds and passed his final three attempts.

Another well received local victory went to Carifta Games junior men’s champion Machel Cedenio, who is still only 17,  who won the men's 400mg in 45.99, which is just 0.06 outside his recent personal best. USA’s Marcus Boyd was second in 46.08.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Domonique Williams emerged victorious in the women's 400m, overtaking USA’s Stacy Anne Smith close to the line to win in a personal best 53.89 with the American second in 54.03.

Mikel Thomas produced an impressive run in the men's 110m hurdles, winning in 13.46 seconds. The Trinidad and Tobago hurdler ran a personal best of 13.39 in Gainesville, Florida, two weeks ago

In the women’s shot put, Trinidad’s 2011 Pan American Games silver medallist Cleopatra Borel got the better of her Cuban rival, Yaniuvis Lopez, producing her winning effort of 17.75m in the very first round of the competition while Lopez could only reach 17.40m.

However, there was a Cuban victory in the men’s discus as Jorge Fernandez, the 2011 Pan American Games champion, gave a classy display to reach 63.04m.

Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting leaves 27 dead, including 18 children, official confirms to AP

December 14, 2012 (NEWTOWN, Connecticut) -- An official with knowledge of the Connecticut school shooting says 27 are dead, including 18 children.

Police report that the school is now cleared of shooters, but they are still treating it as an active shooter situation and all schools in the district remain locked down. There are unconfirmed reports of a second shooter, but it is unclear what happened to that gunman.

State police officers have gone classroom to classroom to make sure the school is clear. Authorities are searching the area, doing roadblocks and checking suspicious vehicles out of an abundance of caution. There are also unconfirmed reports that authorities have surrounded a purple van in Danbury that may be connected to the shooting.

State police are assisting Newtown police at the school, located on Dickinson Drive in Fairfield County. Governor Dan Malloy is also at the scene.

The first 911 call reportedly came in just after 9:40 a.m., stating that multiple students were trapped in a classroom with a gunman, who authorities say was an adult who had at least two guns. The school locks its exterior doors during the school day, so it is unclear how the gunman or gunmen gained access to the building.

Students were escorted from the building and evacuated to a nearby firehouse, and a reverse 911 call went out to parents. Some children could be seen reuniting with their parents outside the firehouse, but at least one group of students remain unaccounted for.

Some students were reportedly being treated for trauma. A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.

The school houses more than 600 students from kindergarten through fourth grade.

Superintendent of schools Kathy June released the following statement: "Due to reports of a shooting as yet unconfirmed, the district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff. All public and private schools in the town are in a lockdown situation."

The district is made up of four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Schools in neighboring Monroe also locked down its schools as a precaution.

Looks like Mr.Bovell badly missed his peak. His winning time here would have won him Olympic gold by a country mile in the 50m Freestyle.

A delighted George Bovell celebrates his gold medal performance in the men’s 100 metres IM at the FINA/Arena World Cup, in Sweden.

T&T’s George Bovell III made it two straight gold medals, as well as two national records at the FINA/Arena Swimming Short Course World Cup, when he won the men’s 50 metres freestyle final in the Stockholm, Sweden, yesterday.

Following his win in the men’s 100 metres individual medley on Saturday which ended a run of four straight silver medals, the 29-year-old Bovell out-swam his rivals in the freestyle final in 20.82 seconds, beating his conqueror in United Arab Emirates and Qatar, USA’s Anthony Ervin (20.99) and Australian Matthew Target (21.15 seconds), in that order.

Bovell, who was seventh in the event at the London Olympic Games, bettered his 21.06 clocking enroute to silver in Doha, Qatar last week.

The other finishers in the final were Australian Kenneth To (21.47), Finland’s Ari-Pekka Liukkonen (21.53), Sweden’s Stefan Nystrand (21.74), New Zealand’s Cameron Simpson (21.88) and Holland’s Jasper Van Mierlo (21.99).

In the heats, Bovell was the fourth fastest qualifier, after he topped heat six of seven in 21.81 seconds, ahead of Nystrand (21.92), Van Mierlo (21.97), Sweden’s Petter Stymne (22.26), Holland’s Geert Lantink (22.65), Sweeden’s Robin Andreasson (22.75), Finland’s Toni Kurkinen (22.87) and Singapore’s Kai Quan Yeo (22.98).

The top qualifiers were Ervin (21.48), To (21.55) and Liukkonen (21.60), the top three swimmers in heat seven, while Simpson (21.89) was fourth in the same heat. Target won heat five in 21.95 seconds.

Last week in Doha, Bovell sped home in 21.06 seconds, just behind Ervin (21.02) while Australian Kyle Richardson got bronze in 21.54 seconds.

A week earlier, the trio also finished 1-2-3 in Dubai with Ervin winning in 21.18 seconds, followed by Bovell (21.23) and Richardson (21.58).

On Saturday, Bovell, swimming out of lane three, in the eight-man final touched the wall in 51.56 seconds to beat Australians, Kenneth To (51.75) and Kyle Richardson (52.78) into second and third spot respectively for his first gold of the World Cup.

The time by Bovell, bettered his 51.87 clocked while claiming silver behind To (51.58) last week in Doha, Qatar while South Africa’s Darian Townsend got bronze in 52.76 seconds.

Bovell’s swim was also the best performance of the finals’ session, which corresponded to 954 points while To had the second best result of the day, 943 points.

The gold medal did not seem possible for Bovell at the half-way point of the race as he found himself in eight spot with a split of 24.56 seconds while To (23.47), Richardson (23.92) and Townsend (23.98) were in the medal positions.

However, Bovell, a 2004 Olympic bronze medal winner in the 200m individual medley and the third fastest qualifier for the final turned up the heat in the second-half of the race with a 27 seconds race home to end To’s run of two-straight gold medals.

Next up for Bovell is the Moscow, Russia leg of the World Cup October 17-18, followed by Berlin, Germany, October 20-21; Beijing, China, November 2-3; Tokyo, Japan, November 6-7 and Singapore, November 10-11.

Low-flying Kelly-Ann Baptiste looking to land on Olympic medal radar
Trinidad sprinter targets complete race at Adidas Grand Prix in N.Y.

NEW YORK –– Quick, name three Olympic medal contenders in the women’s 100m.

Chances are your shortlist had some combination of Americans like Carmelita Jeter and Allyson Felix, and Jamaicans like Veronica Campbell-Brown, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Kerron Stewart.

Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad & Tobago prepares to compete in the women's 100m at the 2011 World Championships.

Meanwhile, Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad & Tobago garners hardly a mention, even though she won a bronze medal at the World Championships last summer, has a PR – 10.84 seconds – comparable to almost everyone mentioned above, and trains in a high-profile group in Clermont, Fla. that includes American-record-holder Tyson Gay.

How is that possible?

We put the question to Baptiste herself ahead of Saturday’s Diamond League adidas Grand Prix, where she will attempt to make inroads in the buzz department in a 100m field that includes Jeter, Felix, and Fraser-Pryce.

“I don’t have an Olympic gold medal and I am not a world champion,” the 25-year-old, who starred collegiately at LSU, said. “In this sport, they always revert back to four years ago. In an Olympic year, women like Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Kerron Stewart are going to be in the limelight because four years ago they got Olympic medals. As much as I run fast times throughout the rest of the season, until I get on that stage and can win an Olympic medal, it’s still going to be the same.”

While on one hand Baptiste struggles to come up with a rationale for how she has been able to fly under the radar in this Olympic year, she isn’t exactly clamoring for attention either.

“I’m very reserved, and I can be shy at times,” Baptiste said. “It’s crazy that I’m in a sport where you do well and you get attention and I don’t really like attention per se. I like the underdog type of feeling because I don’t have anything to worry about. What do I have to lose? The people who have won World Championships and Olympic gold, they’re the ones who have pressure on them. Nobody expects me to do anything anyway.”

But Baptiste is quite capable of cracking the U.S.-Jamaica stranglehold in London and she knows it. Moreover, she knows exactly what has prevented her from becoming a more prominent figure sooner.

“Maybe five years ago I never really had a great start,” she explained. “I always struggled with it and you would see me running from the back. Now, I have been able to develop that part of my race and it seems as if I am struggling with my finish.”

Indeed, if you look back at Baptiste’s high-profile races you will find that her technique has a tendency to unravel over the course of the final 20 meters. It happened again earlier this season at the Jamaica Invitational, where she had a tremendous start and was leading midway but got caught from behind by Jeter, who won in 10.81. Baptiste was second in 10.86.

“I think in the last 20 meters I really have a tendency to drop my hips and I don’t stay up,” Baptiste said. “That is something that I have been trying to work on in practice. I’ve been trying to do more speed endurance to have that feeling toward the end of a race where you are fatigued and you have to really focus on keeping your technique together.

“I need to run a complete race because I’m not a starter, nor do I think I am a finisher. Once I figure out how to put the complete race together, I will be fine.”

She could very well become an Olympic champion.

Kingston, Jamaica - There is a buzz of anticipation surrounding Saturday evening’s Jamaica Invitational at the national stadium, an IAAF World Challenge meeting.

A number of World and Olympic champions and current world leaders led by double World record holder Usain Bolt and the youngest IAAF men’s World 100m champion Yohan Blake have been confirmed to take part in the meet, the first real serious showdown of the season.

Up to Thursday however the participation of former men’s 100m World Record holder Asafa Powell was still not clear.

Powell who ran the anchor leg on his MVP team’s 4x100m Relay that finished second to an Usain Bolt-led Racers team two weeks ago, had told reporters on Wednesday his groin injury suffered some years ago had been acting up and he was not sure he would run.{He has now withdrawn}

News had surfaced last week that Powell would compete in the 200m against Blake, the second fastest man over the distance ever with 19.26 seconds done last year.

Bolt had confirmed weeks ago he would be running his first 100m of the year on Saturday and while not making any predictions, had said he was working on improving his start.

Bolt who sensationally false started in the 100m final in Daegu last year, told reporters he was fully fit and was anxious to get the season started.

Blake ran a world leading 9.90 seconds in rainy and cold conditions at the UTech Classic three weeks ago and expectations are that Bolt should lower that time before moving on to the European circuit.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Beijing Olympic Games silver medalist Richard Thompson, Antiguan Daniel Bailey, IAAF World Indoors 60m silver medalist Nesta Carter, relay gold medalist Michael Frater and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Lerone Clarke are also slated to take part in the event.

In the absence of Powell, Blake’s competition should come from Norway’s Jaysuma Saidy Ndure and Jamaica’s World University games champion Rasheed Dwyer and Nickel Ashmeade who won the event last year.

World 200m leader American Carmelita Jeter will seek to defend her 100m title form last year and will have Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, Bianca Knight, Kelly Ann Baptiste, Debbie Ferguson McKenzie as well as Olympic silver medallists Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson in what is expected to be one of the top races of the evening.

World female 400m season leader Sanya Richards Ross who is seeking her first Olympic individual gold medal, returns to the country of her birth and will seek to atone for a disappointing fifth place last year.

The Jamaica trio of Novlene Williams-Mills, Rosemarie Whyte and Kaliese Spencer who took the podium places last year are also expected to take part.

Canada’s Pricilla Lopes-Schllep who was second in Guadeloupe on Tuesday (1 May) in her first race back after giving birth will face former World champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Vonette Dixon and last year’s surprise winner Tiki James in the 100m Hurdles.

Reese has been one of the best female long jumpers in the world over the past two years and is coming off a win in the World Indoors and will come into the meet with a 7.12m world best. Americans Brianna Glenn and Janay Deloach as well as Jamaicans Jovanee Jarrett will also compete in the Long Jump.

Hoffa who has a world season leading 21.73m distance to his credit will be the class of the field in the Shot Put.

05.02.2012 - [Track and Field]

Printable Format

LEVELLAND - Seven SPC track and field athletes made announcements regarding their future plans during a 1:30 p.m. ceremony in the T-Club lounge inside the Texan Dome Wednesday.
Head Coach Chris Beene said this might be the best signing class he has had in his eight years at the helm of the Texan and Lady Texan Track and Field programs. Six of the athletes, all of whom signed in the fall, will attend schools in the ultra-successful Southeastern Conference while a recent signee will stay a little closer within the Big 12.

Decked out in LSU apparel, Natoya Goule, Keri Emanuel, and Shana-Gaye Tracey each announced they would be joining the powerful Lady Tiger track and field team next season.

The Lady Tigers will be looking for a third consecutive SEC Championship when they host the conference meet May 10-13 in Baton Rouge. With the firepower of Goule, Emanuel, and Tracey, they are putting themselves in position for another run in 2013 and 2014.

Goule is one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of the NJCAA having won six NJCAA Championships and eight All-America honors as a freshman. She added a cross country championship in the fall and will try to add more titles when South Plains hosts the NJCAA Championships May 15-17.

Additionally, Goule has set seven individual school records and has also been a member of 5 relay school records indoor and outdoor.

Emanuel is the defending NJCAA Outdoor Champion in the long jump and was second in the 2011 indoor triple jump and should be the favorite to win both championships in two weeks as she has soared to new distances, breaking both long and triple jump school records with season bests of 20-09.75 in the long jump and 43-10.00 in the triple jump.

Also attending LSU, Tracey is also a defending NJCAA Champion having come out on top in the 400 meter hurdles a year ago.

One of the newest members to the SEC, Texas A&M, has landed NJCAA 400M hurdle record holder Janeil Bellille. Bellille broke the record during a meet last April contested at Texas Tech, finishing with a time of 55.80 seconds. She earned an All-America award with a second place finish in the 55M hurdles at the 2011 NJCAA Indoor Championships.

Kemoy Campbell and Sparkle McKnight will see a lot of their former teammates as they will be competing for the University of Arkansas, also in the SEC.

McKnight was third in last year's outdoor championship meet in the 400M Dash and currently leads the NJCAA in the event with a time of 53.29 seconds and ranks second behind Bellille in the NJCAA over the 400M Hurdles.

Campbell will be joining a Razorback squad that is back on the rise after finishing second at the recent NCAA Indoor Championships and tied for 10th at the 2011 Outdoor Championship meet and will take versatility and range with him to Fayetteville.

Campbell is a two-time NJCAA Champion and six-time All-America performer for the Texans. Most impressive, however, was his performance at the 2011 NJCAA Outdoor Championships where he won the 800M Run while also finishing second in the 1500M and 5000M Runs.

Amoy Blake chose to not stray to far as she will stay on the South Plains when she attends Texas Tech University next fall. Blake helped the Lady Texan 4x400M Relay team to the NJCAA Championship last May and was also on the runner-up 4x100M Relay team.

Before they move on, all seven athletes have more business to tend to with the rest of their teammates. The track and field teams will compete in their final regular season meet at Texas Tech on Saturday, May 5 before hosting the NJCAA Track and Field Championships May 15-17 at the Texan Track and Field Complex. The Texans will be searching for their sixth consecutive team title while the Lady Texans are aiming for their fourth straight title.

London 2012: Hurdler Jehue Gordon set to give his all
By Kevin Bishop BBC World Olympic Dreams

It is Easter Saturday in Port of Spain and the only traffic jams in the normally congested city in Trinidad are on the road north, out of town towards Maracas Beach.

Seeking shade from the hot April sunshine, the shark 'n' bake stalls along the beach parking lot are doing a brisk trade. Soca music blares out from every speaker. The country is in party mode.

But back in the city, it's like any other weekend for one 20-year-old. As the sun begins to beat down on the empty Hasely Crawford Stadium, Jehue Gordon is pulling a trolley around the track. For this rising star of track and field, it's a way of keeping in touch with reality.

Trinidad and Tobago 400 metre hurdler Gordon has achieved the qualifying time for the Olympics and is now set for national selection.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - NAAA Secretary Allan Baboolal is wary that the Hasely Crawford Stadium may not be ready in time for this weekend's Carifta trials.Ads

>

In an interview, on a local radio station on the weekend, Baboolal said he is not sure what will happen this weekend, March 3.

He the NAAA had asked to have access to the facility at least two days ahead of the two-day meet.

"We indicated to the stadium authorities that we would need a day to two to put everything in place for the first day of competition of March 3. We are still awaiting confirmation...," he said.

The stadium has been closed from sporting activities for the last month for the hosting of Carnival events.

When will someone finally put their foot down and demand some accountability with this nonsense. :frustrated:

The recent news coming out of Trinidad & Tobago where police raided the offices of the Newsday newspapers motivated me to write this article. And again, it has to do with an organization in the same country, the National Association of Athletics Administrations of Trinidad and Tobago (NAAA).Ads

>

In 2011, yours truly had encountered a problem with the NAAA, or maybe I should say its public relations officer, Trevor James. But then again, he is the face of the association. James removed TrackAlerts.Com, the only Caribbean track & field website, from the association mailing list because of, according to him, Clayton Clarke's "behaviour".

I responded to James by saying Clarke is not employed by TrackAlerts.Com, but is merely promoting the sport, NOT only in Trinidad & Tobago, but the entire Eastern Caribbean. James is of the opinion that Clayton is "doing his (James') job" by sending emails, informing people (media and track and field fraternity) about teams travels, providing bios and interviews with athletes, schedules of track meets and reminders. I found Mr. James' action rude and unprofessional and told him that I would write to the Minister for Sports in his country, as well as NACAC, IAAF, the Caribbean Media Association and the Journalist body, along with the International Sports Journalists Association (AIPS). After that, Mr. James re-added TrackAlerts.Com's email to his mailing list.

But again, later in 2011, our email was again removed as we have not gotten anything from the NAAA in almost a year ... This is in my opinion, another way of an association trying to dictate to the media.

While I am not saying it is the right of this website to be included on the association's mailing list, the stance taken by James, if it was made alone, is disrespectful and lack professionalism. It also goes to show that persons who hold public office deal with the business of the public as if it's their own. In this case, James and the association he represents are answerable to the people of Trinidad & Tobago and this will be the case as long as he holds such office. So, whether or not his decision to remove us from his mailing list is personal, or is an association's decision, it is cowardly and narrow- minded. The people of Trinidad & Tobago who cannot get the news, are the ones to suffer.

Finally, I would say to James and the NAAA, your association CANNOT, and I repeat CANNOT do without the media.

Thompson keen on sprint success

By JOEL BAILEY Saturday, January 14 2012

SPRINTER Richard Thompson, who copped a pair of silver medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, is keen on repeating those feats at this year’s Games in London, England.

The 26-year-old took silver at both the 100-metre dash (behind Jamaica’s Usain Bolt) and the 4x100m relay (behind Jamaica) at Beijing.

“We have limited time before we have our trials (in June),” he said, referring to the Trinidad and Tobago trials. “I started training in October. Things have been going well thus far and I’m just working on trying to make significant improvements on the last couple of years,” he added.

“Hopefully, in 2012, I’ll be able to repeat my performance from 2008, and better.”

The highlight of his 2011 season took place on August 13, when he smashed the TT 100m record at the Sagicor NAAA Open Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

His time of 9.85 seconds, the ninth fastest in the all-time lists, lowered Ato Boldon’s previous mark of 9.86 (which he set four times during the late 1990s).

But, at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea later that month, he failed to advance to the 100m final, which was won by Yohan Blake of Jamaica.

“It was up and down for me,” Thompson conceded. “There were good moments and then there were dull moments. Anyone wants to perform at their best when it matters the most and I wasn’t able to do that.

“(In) the World Championships, being eliminated in the semi-finals, it was a huge disappointment,” he added. “But that in itself was a form of motivation for me to do better (this) year.

“I’m just working hard right now, working smart and trying to control what I can,” Thompson said. “Everything else is in the Lord’s hands.”

About his immediate plans, he stated, “(it’s) just training right now, probably run a couple of relays.

“It’s just a matter of getting myself ready for when it matters most in August. But, right now, it’s just training.”

And he’s philosophical about the public expectations towards him this year.

“I think after last year, and the year before, I don’t think the expectations are as high,” he acknowledged.

“There were a lot of expectations in ’09 (for the World Championships in Berlin) but, as far as 2012 (is concerned), I can’t say that there are lots of high expectations because Bolt have been dominant.

Thompson continued, “Blake came along and has been doing extremely well. There are other athletes who have been doing extremely well.

“As far as expectations, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that Trinidad expects me to win. But I know what I expect from myself and that’s what matters most to me right now.

“I expect to continue to work hard and get much better results (this) year,” he ended.

Cricket Anyone / India Vs. Australia 2nd test-Michael Clarke chases 400*

As much as I would like to see the record remain in West Indian hands, at the end off the day records are made to be broken.

Michael Clarke has batted superbly for the past day and a half and looks well set to surpass that magical number set by Lara. Not only does he look good as a batsman, the current setup of this match will allow him to get there comfortably, without out having the selfish tag attached, as there is still over 7 sessions of cricket left in the match.

Ato inducted into UCLA Hall of Fame
Published: Fri, 2011-11-04 02:04
Dr Cliff Bertrand

To finish and win, you have to start the race. Hebrews 12:1 says that there is a race set before us that we are to run. You have to move forward and keep moving forward. This is the life of Ato. A life of perpetual movement inspiring people all over the world to move forward and take their prize. Make a contribution in the quest for a better world. He has shown that in order to finish and win, you must be a participant and not just a spectator or glorified wall flower. You must report to the starter on the track. Your public responsibilities begin with the acquisition of a medal. To honour and serve! Ato is viewed as one of the leading track personalities in the history of the Caribbean. He now enters the UCLA’s Hall of Fame. Ato’s induction will help inspire T&T’s Athletes. It will heighten participation as spectator or athlete. Sports aficionados are saying that Ato’s historic induction into UCLA’S Hall of Fame will inspire the nation’s youth population, from our Olympic hopefuls to young people who participate in sports for fitness and fun.

Ato is the second Caribbean athlete, the other being Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to be inducted into UCLA’s Hall of Fame’s history. This is a great and historical day for T&T. Ato’s indefatigable work ethics, determination and achievements within and outside the walls of the nation and one of America’s most prestigious universities has put him at the top of the podium and his game as well as into the books of Caribbean and US history. Ato’s achievements should prompt young people to join clubs and seek professional coaching and assistance to enhance and perfect their skills. The T&T Government has just contracted with Cuba a multimillion dollar initiative to provided coaching in the years leading through 2012  Olympics to support sports and boost general participation at grassroots levels. The Government’s efforts must be appreciated as we go in search to find the next Ato Boldon.

Ato Jabari Boldon is a former athlete from Trinidad and Tobago and four-time Olympic medal winner. Only two other men in history, Frankie Fredericks of Namibia and Carl Lewis of the USA, have won as many Olympic individual event sprint medals. Boldon was born in Port-of-Spain Trinidad on December 30, 1973, to Mr and Mrs Guy Boldon. Ato attended Fatima College in Trinidad. He migrated to the United States at age fourteen and attended Jamaica High School in Queens, New York City, Piedmont Hills High School in California. Boldon graduated with a degree in sociology fromUCLA. At age 18, Boldon represented T&T at 100 metres and 200 metres in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In 1999 The British Broadcasting Corporation hired him as a commentator and analyst at their Championships He returned as a track-side analyst to cover the 2000 US Olympic Track and Field Trials in California.

He was appointed sports ambassador for T&T in 2000 and given a diplomatic passport. On February 14 2006 he became a senator representing then opposition United National Congress. After 14 months as senator he resigned. He joined NBC  as sports analyst covering the 2007 US National Championships, and later on in Osaka 2008 Summer Olympics. He was praised by the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and The New York Times  press for his NBC coverage They called him “one of NBC's best analysts, a blend of athletic smarts, charisma, precise analysis and brashness.” Boldon currently covers the Diamond League Circuit Track and Field on Universal Sports TV in Europe. On July 6, 2011 UCLA BRUINS  official website  cited: Student-athletes and coaches to be Hall of Famers on November 4 (today). The inductees are: Gary Adams, baseball. Ato Boldon and Janeene Vickers-McKinney Track & Field.  Theotis Brown and Ernie Case, football; Larry Nagler, tennis; Mel North, fencing; Alex Rousseau, water polo.

The Class of 2011 brings the total membership to 247. The new inductees will be introduced to over 20,000 fans during the halftime ceremonies of the UCLA-Arizona State football game at the Rose Bowl on November 5th. Ato holds the PAC-10 meet records in 100m (10.03) and 200m (20.00) and UCLA records in the 100m (9.90) and 200m (19.80). Boldon ranked No 1 in the world at the 200m on four occasions with 19.88 and No 2 in the 100m at 9.86 seconds for seven years. He ran a total of 28 sub-ten-seconds 100m races, including eight under 9.90 seconds. He won four Olympic and four World Championship medals. To obtain the prize racers and runners have one thought in their minds. The finish line! When do they stop running and trying? Paul the apostle tells you to run your spiritual race with all your might keep your focus. Do not settle for just being average. No matter what the inconvenience, endure it, no matter what the price, pay it or the required adjustment, and make it.

Faithfully run the race so that one day you will obtain the prize. Ato’s journey is incomplete—he is only 38years old!

A review of track and field in T&T, (September)

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago: There has been much debate on the performance of Trinidad and Tobago at the 2011 World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea, where Kelly Ann Baptiste captured the country’s lone medal, when she won bronze in the women’s 100m finals.

The men’s 4x100 squad seemed on course for a medal in the finals, until the third leg mis-hap, when Aaron Armstrong was impeded by US runner Darvis Paton, as he was about to pass the baton to anchorman, Richard Thompson.

Paton fell to the ground and Armstrong was eventually able to get the stick to Thompson who crossed the line in sixth.

Thompson was angry as he passed through the mixed zone. His feelings represented the sentiments of several in the local track and field fraternity, as the entire World Championships episode left a bitter taste in the mouth of many.

The build up to the Championships was not much different. The delay in the installation of a new track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, led to the postponement of the National Championships.

The local governing body, in its infinite wisdom, opted to reschedule the meet to August 13 an 14. Why? They alone knew.

NAAA president Ephraime Serrette said the new date was the only window available to the professional athletes.

Getty Images PhotoKelly-Ann Baptist celebrates with her country's flag after taking bronze in the women's 100m at the 2011 Daegu World Championships. Getty Images PhotoWhen asked if the NAAA had consulted with the Ministry of Sports (who was responsible for the putting down of the new track) and the athletes, the NAAA indicated that they are authority on track and field in Trinidad and Tobago and as such took a decision that they believed was in the best interest of the sport.

I don’t know of any athlete who did not complain about the ill-timing of the new date which was set to two weeks before the World Champs and one day before the deadline for the submission of entries. It was also close to the date of return, for athletes at US Universities . Yet Mr. Serrette, a former athlete himself, said the top athletes will ‘just’ have to adjust their schedules from June 22 thru 25 to August 13 and 14.

I am not sure how simple that would have been given the expenses associated with the use of stadia, gyms, nutrition and travel. I guess the elite athletes funding was expected to cover that.

Some of the US collegiate athletes did not even bother to consider attending the Trials, because the new date would have interrupted their schools' training programmes, which were planned well in advance.

What did the NAAA get for rescheduling the date to one day before the IAAF entries deadline for the World Championships?

One athlete (Ayanna Alexander) being selected when she did not meet the standard!

It was only when the NAAA submitted the team’s list, that they were informed of the 'error'. Their response? .. “We are sorry, we made an error, thank God we did not buy a ticket for her. We will pay for her return home to the US”

Another Alexander, Annie (women’s shot put) and Janiel Bellille (women’s 400m hurdles), made the B standard in their events and were not selected. But because the team was submitted on the deadline date there was no chance of changing or making additions as we have seen with other teams. Their response..None. Darryl Brown was sixth in the men’s 100m finals and was not included in the relay pool. Their response… “We don’t owe the media an explanation on selection”.

The National Championships come off. Spectular performances. Thompson scorched the new track in a national record of 9.85 in the men’s 100m, as the next five runners set season’s best times.

Rondell Sorillo was sensational in the 200m zipping to 20.16. Jehue Gordon clocked a 2011 best of 48.75 in taking the men’s 400m hurdles. Everybody was excited about the prospects. However, former World Champion Ato Boldon was adamant that the timing of the local trials was too close to the Worlds.

Within two days of that glorious August weekend, the team was named, flights booked and the athletes left for Daegu. There was no time to train, bond or do psychological preparation. No time for massages or therapy either. Then they spent close to seventeen hours of travelling.

The team arrived as the booking allowed, given the late arrangements. Some athletes complained that two days had passed and they still had not yet slept properly. While in Deagu, news broke that Jehue Gordon was not on the list for the men’s 400m hurdles. Their response was… “no big deal. It is just an error.” No consideration was given to the ordeal the young athlete was going through.

Then it was on to the performances where Baptiste blazed to bronze in the women’s 100m finals. Thanks to shrewd management, she was on her way to Daegu when our trials were taking place and had ample time to adjust and train.

At her press conference, with the exception of her manager, there were no NAAA officials being there to celebrate with her. The Jamaican and American contingents were there most prominently and proud indeed in their colours.

Borel made it into the women’s shot put finals. She too was in Daegu ahead of the team. Richard Thompson and Keston Bledman flopped in the men’s 100. Both looked sluggish and nowhere near their 9.85 and 9.93 forms.

T&T’s third entrant Armstrong did not make it out of the heats, clocking a pedestrian 10.48. Gordon missed making the finals and not breaking the 48 second barrier.

The youngsters may have stolen the show in Daegu as teenagers Kai Sevlon and Michelle Lee Ahye showed. Selvon set a national Junior 200m record (22.89) and made it to the semifinals of the half lap event.

Lee Ahye set a PB in the 100m (10.20) in advancing to the semis, both were part of the women’s 4x100m team which set a nationl record of 42.50, in taking the second heat in the preliminaries. Baptiste and Semoy Hackett were the other runners.

The quartette missed out on medaling in the finals.

It was interesting to hear the comments of NAAA President Serrette of the meet, as he was there to see it first hand. “It was a good performance. What’s the fuss ? Jamaica and USA did not do as well as they could have done?”

Makes me wonder what was Serrette or the NAAA's expectation of the team going to Daegu? Was it just to surpass the medal haul of 2009?

It will also be intriguing to find out also what was the plan of action leading up to and arriving in Daegu. But I guess those plans were thrown out awry with the postponement of the national Championships, due to incompletion of the laying of the new track.

I am baffled at the comments of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Ashwin Creed, who described the team performance as disappointing. He called on the athletes and NAAA to revisit training programmes ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.

Coach Creed identified what areas athletes need work on (to ensure they continue to get their elite funding…I guess). My question to him is when was the last time the athletes got their funding? How much did they get? When will they be getting the next part?

I guess no one should ask, because that would be biting the hand that feeds them.

I however feel that him and the NAAA still have an axe to grind…over the new track not being finished on time, over the seeding of the 400m heats at the Championships, over the Secondary School Championships, or maybe it is just old wounds opening up.

Following the World Championships Thompson was in ripping form. He won in 10.05 in Slovakia beating the World Championships bronze medallist Kim Collins. He was third in Croatia (10.03) and Berlin (10.08). Gordon topped the field in Berlin (48.66). Had the national championships not been so close to Worlds we may have seen better performances from our athletes.

What is astounding is that there has not been an acknowledgement by the NAAA that better could have been done by the team. As a matter of fact there has been no comment from the Daegu team management. The Bahamas Association president Michael Sands, in response to the failure of the country’s 4x400m team not advancing to the World Championships final, said his association has to admit that some management errors were made in selection.

The month has ended on a sad note, as NAAA executive member Ali St. Louis passed away. St. Louis was a former national 400m athlete and competed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. His name is well known in the local track and field circles, as all five of his daughters represented our country.

Sade won medals at the 2001 Carifta and 2002 CAC Junior champs. Britney won double CAC Junior gold in 2005 and double Carifta titles in 2005. She was semifinalist at the 2008 World Junior Champs and is a part of T&T women’ national junior 4x400m record breaking team.

Alisha and Aquilla were part of the CAC Age Group team in the BVI this year. His wife Portia was a coach on that team and also spearheads the D’Abadie Progressive Athletic Club .

The month of September was a special month for Trinida and Tobago. The World Championships ended on the 4th with Kelly Ann Baptiste capturing this country’s lone medal, a bronze in the women’s 100m dash.
