Josanne Lucas after the Women's 400m hurdles final during the World Athletics Championships in Berlin on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Port-of Spain, Trinidad: Trinidad and Tobago’s two world championships bronze medal winners Josanne Lucas (women’s 400m hurdles) and Renny Quow (men’s 400m) returned home on Monday (Oct 5) to a hero’s welcome.
The athletes arrived in Piarco, Trinidad from Miami, Florida just before 2pm and were greeted by Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Hon. Gary Hunte, President of the T & T track and field association Ephraime Serette, parents of Lucas (Juliet and Durly) and Quow’s (father Rupert).

Minister Hunte, who represented the government, welcomed the athletes and presented them with gifts on behalf of his ministry.

Lucas and Quow then flew over to Tobago where they were greeted by large welcome party headed by the island’s Secretary for Education, Youths Affairs and Sports Mrs. Claudia-Groome Duke, Director for Sports Theophilus Trim, sporting officials, family members of both athletes (including Renny’s mother Rena). Also on hand were club members from Josanne’s Tobago Falcons Track Club and Renny’s Zenith athletic Club.

Lucas is Tobago-born while Quow was born in Trinidad but grew up in Tobago with mother. Both had their earlier training on the island which has also produced Kelly-Ann Baptiste, semifinalist in the women’s 100m and 200m in Berlin and Semoy Hackett, 100m semifinalist. Baptiste and Hackett were part of T & T national sprint relay team which placed 7th in Berlin. Both are at universities in the US and were unable to join Lucas and Quow on their return to Tobago.

Lucas became the first T & T woman to medal at a global event when she crossed the line third in Berlin, in the women’s 400m hurdles, setting another national record of 53.20 while Quow was third in the men’s 400m in 45.02 seconds. Lucas’s record run represents the fourth time in 2009 she has lowered the national mark: 55.24 in Belem, Brazil in June to 54.17 in Baie Mahault, France in July to 53.98 in the semis in Berlin to 53.20 in the finals. She has the third fastest time in 2009 and the 17th fastest all time. The 25-year-old is former All-American with Auburn University where she won silver (400m hurdles) at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

Quow’s bronze in Berlin in 45.02 seconds is his second global medal as he took the World Junior 400m gold in Beijing in 2006. He returned to Beijing last year for the 2008 Olympics and finished seventh. He set a new personal best of 44.53 in the semifinals in Berlin to become the second fastest T & T quarter-miler behind Ian Morris’ 44.21 set at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He is now 63rd fastest 400m runner on the all-time list. Quow is also the youngest ever 4×400m finalist at the World Championships when we ran with the T & T team at the 2005 Games in Helsinki, Finland at the age of 17 yrs.

The pair has a busy schedule on the island. They are expected to pay courtesy call on Tobago’s Chief Secretary Orville London, visit their alma-maters Lucas (Lambeau Anglican Primary and Bishop High School) and Quow (Scarborough Anglican Primary and Scarborough Secondary School) before going on an island-wide school tour.

Trinidad and Tobago won three medals at the 2009 IAAF World Championships of Athletics, Berlin, Germany. The third is silver (37.62 sec, NR) in the men’s 4×100m relay (Darryl Brown, Marc Burns, Keston Bledman, Emmanuel Callender and Richard Thompson).

The need for speed: Sorrillo runs for country, university

Posted by Sports on September 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

By Nick Craddock

UK sprinter Rondel Sorrillo leads a dual life.

One month ago, Sorrillo was in Berlin, competing against some of the fastest men in the world in the 200-meter dash at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships, while representing his home country, Trinidad and Tobago. Today, Sorrillo, a senior, sits in math class learning the finer points of calculus, awaiting the start of the NCAA track and field season.

Though the jersey Sorrillo wears may change, the goals he sets for himself don’t, as he constantly balances his allegiances to his college and country.

“You want to put out your best, regardless,” Sorrillo said. “When you run in an international meet you want to be top eight. When you run here you have to defend your school pride, which is more pressure.”

UK sprints and hurdles coach Erin Tucker said the increased pressure for Sorrillo is often the result of his success at the international level, which causes his collegiate opponents to view him as a favorite— but Sorrillo would never admit such a thing.

“Rondel is so humble and he appreciates all his competitors,” Tucker said.

Tucker added that some track stars, who compete with the highest-level of competition in the world at major international events, struggle to focus on the college season when they face lesser opponents, but Sorrillo is unfazed.

After a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Championships held in June, Sorrillo’s attention shifted to international competition. He was especially busy this summer with his national team, collecting frequent flyer miles and experience at the international level along the way, as he served notice to his future NCAA competition after his performances on the track.

Sorrillo, an Olympian in 2008, began this summer by claiming the 200-meter title at the Trinidad and Tobago National Open Track and Field Championships.

Tucker said he sent Sorrillo an e-mail after the victory, joking that he “finally” won a major international championship, a victory that didn’t sink in immediately, Sorrillo said.

“Only after a month or two (of) reflecting on it did I think it was a good experience,” Sorrillo said.

Sorrillo followed up his victory with a second-place finish in the 200-meter, along with a gold medal as part of Trinidad and Tobago’s 4×100-meter relay team, at the Central American and Caribbean Games in July, before claiming 13th place at the World Championships in August.

Sorrillo’s international triumphs have brought him “some” fame and recognition in his homeland. Originally, Sorrillo played soccer, but quit after seeing all his speed go to waste while his coach continually sat him on the bench. Not long after his soccer career, Sorrillo was drawn to track and field, despite its lack of popularity in the area of Trinidad and Tobago he lived.

“The event chose me,” Sorrillo said on why he decided to compete in the 200. “I realized that people were running the first 100 (meters) and jogging the next 100, but I could jog the first 100 and run the last 100.”

Now, Sorrillo has aspirations to become the first Trinidad and Tobago native to win an Olympic gold medal since Hasley Crawford accomplished the feat in the 100-meter dash at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

But before Sorrillo has his chance at Olympic glory, he also wants to try to pry the 200-meter NCAA Championship away from Florida State’s Charles Clark.

Sorrillo will not consistently don the same jersey, but his coaches will emphasize the need for consistency on the track this spring.

“(Sorrillo) is hungry to get back to work,” Tucker said. “He needs to know what he has got left in the tank for finals, so he can continue to execute.”

Thompson heads TT team for Berlin worlds

Tuesday, August 4 2009

DOUBLE Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson is among 19 TT athletes selected by the National Association of Athletic Administration (NAAA) to compete at the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany from August 15 to 23.

Thompson ran his best time for the year at the National Championships in June, clocking 10.01 seconds to claim the gold medal. He has been unable to replicate his 2008 Olympic form so far but can not be counted out and will be sprinting to further increase his reputation on the world stage.

Also in the team is the injury prone Darrel Brown. The sprinter has good memories at the World Championships albeit in 2003 when he was second to Kim Collins in 100m final.

He also was a member of the quartet that won silver in 4 x100m event in Edmonton 2001 and Helsinki 2005. He is still, however, yet to break his personal best time of 9.99 seconds, set four years ago.

The TT 4x100m relay team is certain to challenge for the gold medal with Aaron Armstrong, Thompson, Marc Burns, Keston Bledman and Darrel Brown available. A lot of attention will be focussed, however, on the 25-year-old Josanne Lucas lining up in the Women’s 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles. Lucas’ progression has been phenomenal this year and set a new personal best and national record in the 400m hurdles in Belem, Brazil at the Grande Prêmio Brasil Caixa meet in May. She clocked 55.24 seconds and one month later dipped below the time to set another national record. She won the gold medal in that event, crossing the finish line in 54.17 seconds at the fifth stop of the Alma Athle Tour in Reims, France.

National quarter-mile champion Renny Quow is also on the TT roster and has yet to dazzle the sporting world since sprinting to gold at the World Junior Championships in 2006.

He was a finalist at the Beijing Olympics last year and will be hoping to at least be in the last eight again and challenge for a medal.

The full TT team — Aaron Armstrong, Aleesha Barber, Annie Alexander, Ayanna Hutchinson, Cleopatra Borel-Brown, Darrel Brown, Jarrin Solomon, Jehue Gordon, Josanne Lucas, Kelly-Ann Baptiste, Keston Bledman, Marc Burns, Monique Cabral, Renny Quow, Reyare Thomas, Richard Thompson, Rondell Sorillo, Sasha Springer and Semoy Hackett,

Does anyone know if Callandar is injured??? I see no other logical reason to exclude him from the side, but yet include Armstrong. Callandar has maintained way better form post trials that Armstrong and has even improved his PR.

Very sad, but atleast there are 2 less culprits out there...

What about Track & Field / Rome Golden Gala!!!!!!!!!!! (July 10th)
« on: July 09, 2009, 08:08:32 PM »
This should be a good meet. On tap we have the clash of the 2nd and 3rd fastest men to ever walk the face of the earth meeting over 100m. Torpedo Thomson makes his first European appearance for 2009, along with the journey man Marc Burns. KAB will get a true taste of what to expect in Berlin as all the top guns are now in form. Every single medal contender except for Veronica Campbell-Brown will be present. Renny Quow will get a clearer picture tomorrow as to his chances of capturing that bronze in Berlin, when he faces the"best of the rest". The Borlee's are missing in acton but he is down to race them in Paris next Friday. Josanne Lucas rounds things off as she is once more thrown into the fiery pit. She will be facing the very best that the world of women 400m hurdling has to offer.

What about Track & Field / Richard Thompson still amazed by Bolt

Full bus' Bolt- T&T sprinter bowled over by Usain's speed

Published: Sunday | May 10, 2009

Gordon Williams, Gleaner Writer

Olympic 100 metres champion Usain Bolt.- file

Richard Thompson knows the crack of a starter's pistol. He expects the loud roar of big stadium crowds.

But the 'whoosh' of Usain Bolt blasting by him in the 100 metres final at last year's Olympics in Beijing was completely new to Trinidad and Tobago's star sprinter. And nearly nine months later, the sound and amazement are still fresh in his mind.

"It was kinda like a full bus passing you," said Thompson wide-eyed, a day after competing at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston.

"He just shot off."

Bolt's acceleration swept the Jamaican to a world record 9.69 seconds and the gold medal. It also downgraded Thompson's ultimate Olympic dream to silver.

But up to the point of Bolt's burst, the 2008 Olympic Games had been as close to perfection for Thompson as he could have imagined. His preparation, fuelled by a steady diet of 200-metre races while competing at his United States college, put him in the best shape of his life, especially to survive the early rounds.

underdog

Yet, Thompson carried the underdog tag into the 100 final. Bolt held the world record. Jamaica's Asafa Powell, a former world-record holder, had run faster than Thompson many times. Plus Powell had beaten him in the semi-final. But Thompson was primed for more than being just another lane assignment.

"When I was on the line, I was very confident," he explained, "and I was saying, you know, I'm gonna put my best foot forward and, hopefully, it'll bring me the gold medal."

It showed in his approach to the starting blocks. While millions of eyes worldwide fixed on eight men and the stretch of track they would cover in 10 seconds or less, the 23-year-old bounced around as if he was about to settle a score with old friends at a picnic in hometown Cascade, Port-of-Spain.

"Anyone who knows me, knows that I thrive off of things like that," Thompson said.

He definitely was not scared. Thompson believed he had already run his toughest race in the semi-final. But Bolt had run faster in Beijing and Thompson knew. Although he had not seen any of his preliminary races, he was told how ridiculously easy Bolt looked, "literally jogging from about 60 metres" while winning the semi- final in 9.85. Still, the 23-year-old Trinidadian wasn't perturbed.

best start

"Everyone expected me to get the bronze medal," he said. "But ... as fast as Bolt had run all year and as fast as Asafa had run all year, my mentality going into the race was that I was going to win."

By the end of the first third of the race to decide the world's fastest human, nothing had changed his mind.

"The gun goes off and I have the best start I have ever had in my life," Thompson recalled. "I'm in front for 30 metres. Bolt isn't too far behind me ... I'm executing the race perfectly.

"I go all the way to 30 metres and I'm driving," he added, sounding as if he still couldn't believe his Olympic fortune. "I come up slowly, relaxed and everything, and generating power at the same time."

Running in lane five, Thompson was on target to pull off perhaps the most stunning upset in track and field history. But then perfection, confronted by a rush of 6' 5" power and speed that bounded up on Thompson's left in lane four, deserted him.

"I just feel Usain pull up at the side," said the Trinidadian.

In a blink, Bolt was gone.

"Within 10 metres, between 40 to 50, I could just feel him separate himself so quickly," said Thompson.

He burst into laughter, shaking his head from side to side.

"It's the most crazy thing I've ever seen in my entire life," Thompson eventually said.

A handful of seconds since he last harboured thoughts of a spot on the top podium, Thompson's priorities abruptly changed.

"At that point I wasn't even fooling myself," he admitted. "I knew the race was over. I knew the gold medal was gone unless (Bolt) had got injured or he had fallen."

That probably wouldn't have helped much either.

"If he had fallen he may still have beaten us," said Thompson, who earned another silver as part of T&T's 4x100 relay team which was beaten by Jamaica's world record run.

"That's how far ahead he was ... Yeah, you're fighting for second place at that point."

The race for silver was another contest altogether. Thompson could feel American Walter Dix looming on his right. So too Powell, a couple lanes over. Everyone was catching up - fast. But he hung on for second in 9.89. Dix, 9.91, finished third; Powell fifth in 9.95. Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles was fourth in 9.93.

nothing better was possible

Silver was not exactly what he dreamed, but after witnessing Bolt's display on August 16, 2008, Thompson is convinced nothing better was possible.

"Losing to Bolt is kinda like winning the race to everyone else," Thompson assured himself. "No, seriously, because really, you step on the line with Usain Bolt, everyone expects you to come nothing other than second because he's expected to win the race."

He knows if Bolt returns in the same form for this summer's IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany, the fight for him and the rest of the world's best sprinters will again be for minor medals. Racing against a "full bus" can do that.

"Bolt is extraordinary," said Thompson

Big int'l cast for 2nd UTech Classic

BY PAUL BURROWES

Wednesday, April 08, 2009

Intent on bringing intercollegiate sports to new heights in Jamaica, the University of Technology (UTech) yesterday announced its second Track & Field Classic boasting athletes from the United States, United Kingdom, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Senegal, Sweden, Korea, Liberia, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas and Trinidad & Tobago.

So far some 150 foreign nationals have confirmed their participation at the by-invitation-only meet, which UTech director of sports Anthony Davis sees as the mission and vision of developing and maintaining "the premier student athlete sport programme in the world".
INFECTIOUS LAUGH: Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser (centre) jokes with (from left) UTech's director of sports Anthony Davis; Jacqueline Jackson of GlaxosmithKline; Meet Director Paul Francis; The Observer's Terry-Ann Burrell; CVM's Ronald Sutherland and NACAC president Neville McCook at the launch of the UTech Classic at the institution yesterday. (Photo: Naphtali Junior)

The April 18 classic will begin at 5:00 pm at the National Stadium, channelling spectators to some four hours of world-class entertainment on the track and in the field.

"This top level competition will bring together over 500 athletes, 150 of whom are from universities in the USA, UK, Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Senegal and some of our top clubs Racers, High Performance Centre, high schools, prep and primary schools as well as athletes with disabilities," Davis noted.

Meet director Paul Francis, who also serves as assistant sports director of UTech, singled out Darrel Brown of Trinidad & Tobago, Daniel Bailey of Antigua and Barbuda, and local boy Marvin Anderson as athletes to watch.

He said every MVP athlete capable "will be participating".

Francis added that 48-times legal sub-10 second speedster Asafa Powell will run in the relay and the 200m against local stars like Michael Frater, Nesta Carter and Jermaine Gonzales.

With a combination of collegiate and invitational events in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 4x100 and 4x400m relays, long jump, shot put, javelin and a five-event challenge, as well as the best eight athletes in high schools for the relays (which he described as 'an extension of Champs'), Francis said the Classic was "another evening of wonderful entertainment".

Instead of opening only the grandstand as obtained at the first staging, the entire stadium will be available, with bleachers tickets costing $100 and grandstand tickets, $500, thanks to sponsors CVMTV, GlaxoSmithkline, Courts Jamaica, Owen Flowers, Jamaica Citrus Growers, Nestle Jamaica through brand Milo, Jablum, Spanish Court, Power 106, KLAS Sports Radio, and the Jamaica Observer.

President of the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC), Neville 'Teddy' McCook, encouraged other sports to "put in the type of work" evident in athletics to become successful.

The Observer's Terry-Ann Burrell said the newspaper was honoured "to be the exclusive print media sponsor for the UTech Track and Field Classic 2009".

Customer Marketing Officer of GlaxoSmithKline, Jacqueline Jackson, challenged other sponsors to support the event, while CVM's vice-president Ronald Sutherland found it an "easy decision" to back the Classic as the station endorsed "excellence".

Looks like our first Brown sighting is right around the corner. ;D  I know the Racers club is also participating, so the 100m race could be a pretty good one.

Bolt, VC doubtful for inaugural Caribbean Games

BY KAYON RAYNOR Senior staff reporter raynork@jamaicaobserver.com

Wednesday, April 08, 2009

MANY of Jamaica's top athletes, including world 100 and 200 metres record holder Usain Bolt and two-time Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, may not be available for the inaugural Caribbean Games in Trinidad & Tobago between July 12 and 19.
Bolt... will compete in Paris during Games in Trinidad

President of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA), Howard Aris, told the Observer yesterday that these doubts have arisen because the dates of the Caribbean Games clash with the period when the major European meets are taking place.

"What has happened is that the calendar of track & field has already been filled before the emergence of these (Caribbean) Games and unfortunately for track & field the dates ascribed to the meet in Trinidad actually are within that time frame where our top athletes worldwide are competing in Europe.

"That's where they earn their living and therefore one would have to be very careful not to deprive our athletes of a living," Aris said.

"So these (European) meets are a means to provide income for these athletes and it's only unfortunate that there's going to be this situation this year with the Games in Trinidad and the European programme (because) there is going to be some difficulty in getting our top athletes there," the JAAA boss added, noting that better planning needs to be done for the second edition of the quadrennial meet in 2013.

However, president and CEO of Supreme Ventures Limited, Brian George, who said his company had been solicited to sponsor the Games by the organising committee in Trinidad & Tobago, said all may not be lost if the top stars from Jamaica fail to make the trip.
CAMPBELL-BROWN... could be involved in major meet in Europe

"Many of these meets ultimately become platforms for emerging athletes, so while it's usual for us to always think of the current stars and say, 'If the current stars are not there, then the success of the track meet may be negatively or positively impacted'... the reality is that a lot of these meets are developmental which have the possibility to create a platform for emerging stars and therefore give an opportunity to see somebody... who you may not have thought of, and maybe the next time you see them crossing the finish line in 2012 at the Olympics," George said.

In the meantime, Aris said the JAAA will be co-operating with its Caribbean counterparts to ensure that Jamaica's athletics programme is well represented at the Games, which is less than 100 days away.

"My only comment is that we'll do everything to facilitate that, but we recognise the need for all our athletes in the region, who should be in these Games that they already had commitments for the programme this summer in Europe.

"For example, it's public knowledge that Usain Bolt is going to compete in Paris on the 17th (of July), while the Games in Trinidad is the 13th and 14th, and you don't fly across the Atlantic like that," Aris explained.

The other sporting disciplines to be contested at the inaugural event are tennis, boxing, netball and volleyball. Approximately 26 countries are scheduled to participate.

Can't really blame them. The games is at the heart of the GL season, which means big dollars.

Usain Bolt is planning to compete in a 100-metre race in Toronto in June, according to one of the sprinter's representatives.

Ricky Simms of PACE Sports Management — which represents the Olympic champion and dozens of other track athletes — told Jamaican reporters on Wednesday that Bolt will run in the planned Toronto Festival of Excellence on June 11.

"This is a new meeting and we are very happy to participate and give the many Jamaicans living in Canada the opportunity to see Usain compete," Simms said in an e-mail.

Organizers have hoped to stage a world-class outdoor competition in June at the revamped Varsity Centre, which will have a capacity for more than 5,000 people. Reports in January indicated that Bolt's appearance fee would be $250,000 US.

Bolt, 22, was the star of the track at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, smashing world records in all three events in which he competed.

Bolt started with an electrifying 9.69 seconds in the 100-metre dash, a race in which he coasted the last several metres.

He then eclipsed American Michael Johnson's hallowed mark in the 200, running full-out for a time of 19.30 seconds. The six-foot-five sprinter finished out his Games by running the third leg on Jamaica's 4x100 relay, teaming with Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell for a record time of 37.10 seconds.

He was honoured with several "best athlete of 2008" accolades as a result, including from the International Association of Athletics Federations and the International Sports Press Association.

Bolt began competing this year in February, running the 100 only in a relay setting, while racing individually in the 400 on two occasions. He is set for his first 100 race later this month.

It wouldn't be the first time Bolt has competed in Canada. He easily won gold in the 200 at the 2003 World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke, Que.

My chance to see the big man in action. ;D ;D

Hackers clone passports in drive-by RFID heist

A British hacker has shown how easy it is to clone US passport cards that use RFID by conducting a drive-by test on the streets of San Francisco.

Chris Paget, director of research and development at Seattle-based IOActive, used a US$250 Motorola RFID reader and an antenna mounted in a car’s side window and drove for 20 minutes around San Francisco, with a colleague videoing the demonstration.

During the demonstration he picked up the details of two US passport cards, which are fitted with RFID chips and can be used instead of traditional passports for travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

“I personally believe that RFID is very unsuitable for tagging people,” he said.

“I don’t believe we should have any kind of identity document with RFID tags in them. My ultimate goal here would be, my dream for this research, would be to see the entire Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative be scrapped.”

Using the data gleaned it would be relatively simple to make cloned passport cards he said. Real passport cards also support a ‘kill code’ (which can wipe the card’s data) and a ‘lock code’ that prevents the tag’s data being changed.

However he believes these are not currently being used and even if they were the radio interrogation is done in plain text so is relatively easy for a hacker to collect and analyse.

The ease with which the passport cards were picked up is even more worrying considering that less than a million have been issued to date.

Paget is a renowned ‘white hat’ ethical hacker and has made the study of the security failings of RFID something of a speciality.

In 2007 he was due to present a paper on the security failings of RFID at the Black Hat security conference in Washington but was forced to abandon the plans after an RFID company threatened him with legal action.

He points out that RFID tags are increasingly being used in physical security systems such as building access cards and the technology needs significant security adding before it could be considered safe for commercial use.

“You sometimes hear people say that an experience is one they can’t put into words,” said Marc Burns. “That was the feeling I had this summer at the 2008 Olympics.”

It was a feeling the 25 year-old native of Trinidad and Tobago, and former Auburn Tiger track athlete, came close to losing this past weekend after he misplaced the silver medal he’d won in the 4 x 100-meter relay as he ran for his home country in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

During a shopping trip with his girlfriend, Burns misplaced the medal which he’d kept in a leather bag that contained some cash and other financial documents in a local store.

“At first I thought I’d left the medal at home,” said Burns, adding that he started to backtrack his steps before realizing the medal was in the small bag he’d misplaced. “I didn’t want to lose the cash or cards, but the most important thing to me was that medal.”

Burns had the medal in his possession that day only because he’d planned to get it insured and show it to a few close friends.

As good fortune would have it, a shopper at the store where he’d misplaced the bag found it and turned it over to the Opelika Police Department.
Burns was reunited with his Olympic medal Sunday afternoon.

“I got it back,” said Burns, who resides in the Auburn area and trains with current AU assistant head track and field coach Henry Rolle. “Now it’s going to get Fed-Ex-ed straight to Trinidad.”

Burns, who ran track at AU from 2002 to 2004 before signing professionally with Adidas, said he will send the medal back home to his family for safekeeping.

Burns understands that as an athlete, he and the other 11 former AU track and field athletes competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, are in a distinct class. “People work and train their entire careers and may not succeed in earning an Olympic medal. I was fortunate to obtain one am happy to show the world that Auburn University can produce world-class athletes like myself, Avard Moncur and Kerron Stewart.”

Silver medallist Richard Thompson gets four-day party

Wed 03/09/2008 19:00

Sprint star Richard Thompson and his fellow Trinidad & Tobago Olympic silver medallists will finally return home on monday - to a four-day party sanctioned by the Caribbean island's Prime Minister.

“We congratulate our valiant men and women in Beijing and we look forward to their triumphant return home,” said the PM, Patrick Manning.

The silver medal-winning 4x-100m relay squad - Keston Bledman, Emmanuel Callender, Aaron Armstrong, Marc Burns, Darrel Brown and Thompson - are expected to arrive at Piarco International Airport, where they’ll be greeted by family, friends and government officials.

The Chaconia Gold Medal, given for ‘Long and Meritorious Service to Trinidad and Tobago in the sphere of Sport’, will be awarded to the athletes in a function hosted by President George Maxwell Richards.

Thompson's individual silver in the 100m saw him clock a personal best 9.83, behind only Usain Bolt's phenomenal 9.69.
