Football / The way forward
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:12:49 AM »
Now that the truth has sunk in what do we see as the way forward ? Can we agree on anything ?
can we say that we can close the gap between us and the regional big four in the forseeable future ?
I am sure all of us would have loved to see T&T in SA but it was not to be ..we simply were not good enough.
I caught the end of an interview with Anthony Street on C news and he was still saying things like Belgrave should have played, Baptiste should have started .. I guess for him the answer  is simply that we did not pick the right players ...is that how we all see it ?

What about Track & Field / Brown the crowd favourite
« on: June 22, 2009, 12:35:40 PM »
..dont know how many of you were there on Saturday but is has been awhile since I have felt that level of anticipation in local athletics.
First it was whether  Brown would race ...that was friday talk ...Thompson's manager confirmed that Darrel would run ..imagine that !
... came Saturday ....allyuh seeing Brown yet ???

then down came something blazing down the rack for 10 metres or so looking like the green hornet with a mohawk ....then coasing as if making a drive by ...... the crowd rose to the occassion ...this is just heats eh people ! Thompson ! Thompson !

then something in orange came down the track ...a little slower ..as if to say ..all uh look meh ! ah reach ! the crowd went wild !!! looking like Mr Trinidad and Tobago ...silky smooth was back ! it was clear who the crowd favoutite was at this point ...

the anticipation was so high ...Brown and thompson part one !

Sorillo and dem fellas was only spectators as far as crowd support went.

Race gone ...Round one to Thompson !

then it was on to he final ...brought forward to keep the time schedule ...
"
First Darrel powered down ......   is only a test drive folks ....the crowd rose ..... "ah backing Brown !!! ..doh mind he eh run two races in ah day for years and he was coming off injury !!!"

Not to be undone de green mohawk machine came down the track ..legs pumping .." dat man have speed boy " de crowd  had no  time to settle .....nobody sat down .....no doubt realising Darrel was de crowd favourite the torpedo  started callng for applause  and the crowd responded....and still nobody at down ! .

.nobody sat down until the race was over ...and sometime after... as the board only seemed to be certain that Thompson won !

Ato was there, Burns, Brown , Sorillo , Armstrong ..all looking at the replay on the TV screen ...first they had Brown fifth and Burns second  .. in de end ah still eh sure who came third ..

The big scoreboard was working ...yeah real wukkin ...showing all kinda youths swimming, playing football  and ting. you would have thought a little replay would be in order ....no sah !

Football / Warner is de best !
« on: June 10, 2009, 11:48:42 AM »
Call him what you want Austin " Ramjack " Hi jack " or just "Jack"  Warner is really a character. From saying de warriors go be hard pressed to reach South Africa, before de loss to mexico, he is now convinced that the team has a good chance of getting there, after the loss.
But if you really want to examine the character...or lack thereof, of the man check out this quote from the express of today ... " ...Warner said the party has no moral authority to call on the government to operate within a constitutional framework when " we in the UNC are ignoring the very rules "
Warner noted that on examining the finances of the party, he found no accountability. ..ah nearly dead with laugh when ah read dis yes !
This from a man who on more than one occassion was reprimanded , with a slap on the wrist ..heh heh ..wonder why ? ...from the very organisation he holds high office in ..for financial practices which go against the virtues espoused by the organisation....we will leave dat dere ! Not to mention the numerous financial battles..always financial ....with the governements of the day for more money without accountability often trying to bring public opinion in support of his requests.
Love him or hate him there is never a dull moment where jack is concerned .....jack has just gotten another term in FIFA so we have him for a long time again ...
It is pointless discussing football in T&T without discussing warner's controlling influence in the sport ..even though he is only supposed to be an adviser to the TTFF.

Villarreal Boss Manuel Pellegrini Favourite To Be New Real Madrid Coach
Florentino Perez's list of trainers is narrowing down slowly…

Manuel Pellegrini is back on Real Madrid's agenda as one of the clear favourites to succeed Juande Ramos if Florentino Perez wins the presidential election, according to a report in AS.

The Chilean coach was initially considered to lack ‘big club experience’, but Perez’s right-hand man, Jorge Valdano, believes that he could be the new Arsene Wenger.

Valdano has already held lengthy talks about the subject of a new coach with the would-be supremo in a bid to convince him that Pellegrini is the right man for the job.

Perez was desperate to prise Wenger away from Arsenal, however, he now recognises that the Frenchman is set to stay at the Emirates and resist any advances.

Pellegrini has been seen as ‘Plan B’ in the presidential camp. Meanwhile, the media have speculated that many big name trainers could be tempted by the task of resurrecting the club. Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Michael Laudrup have all been linked, but none appear to have made their interest public and nor have they agreed to any deal.

Perez wants to have a coach in place before the election is held so that he can use the name to promote his manifesto.

I know it was not going to be too long in coming ..dem fat cheques teams eh stupid.

Football / Yorke-the forward
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:43:12 PM »
Just a question ...given the style of football we have been playing is there room to switch Dwight's position to partner with jones up front ?
The strikers instinct which seems to be lacking up front could be a big plus for T&T. lets face it we have gone two games without him at the back ,,can he better serve the team in scoring goals rather than trying to stop them ?
I believe a younger ball winner could be utilised to protect the defense and dwight could use kenwyn's speed and strength to form a very formidable pair. He would not have to expend as much effort up front as in defense especially against Costa Rica who play a quick short passing game.
lets face it we are stronger, taller and maybe a dwight yorke in the front could still terrify the opposition.
What do you all think ?

« on: May 07, 2009, 04:22:01 PM »
I know some folks may think I am blaspheming with this question but ...some of the skipper's decisions and even actions can be termed irresponsible ...like getting himself banned for crucial games and taking the friend route when we could have gone three up against El Salvador.
He is not even playing football at any level yet he is expected to lead a team struggling for results ?
Surely we are not taking things too seriously if we dont at least consider this question ...

Report: Villarreal Eyeing Fulham Forward Bobby Zamora
The 28-year-old could be on his way out of Craven Cottage this summer, with Spain touted as a possible destination...
8 Apr 2009 09:48:05

Spanish outfit Villarreal are considering making a move for Fulham's Bobby Zamora at the end of the season, according to a report in the British tabloid The Daily Mirror.

Apparently, El Submarino Amarillo are targeting the 28-year-old forward, despite his less than impressive record of four goals in 35 appearances this campaign.

The 6ft 3in striker is contracted at Craven Cottage until 2012 having only joined the west London outfit from West Ham United last summer.

However, it is claimed that the former England Under-21 international could be on his way out of Fulham during the close season after receiving jeers from certain sections of the Cottagers' faithful.

It is thought that Zamora would like to play in the Primera Division as his family have Spanish connections (as well as T&T connections...like dey eh know dat or what )  and, with Villarreal currently on course to qualify for the Champions League again next year, the opportunity may prove too good to turn down should it come along.

Brazil Break Transfer Record In 2008
According to the Brazilian Football Association, Brazil transferred a record number of footballers abroad this year...

Brazil transferred 1,176 footballers abroad in 2008, a record number that beats last year's total by 8.4% (1,085), stated the Brazilian Football Association (CBF).

This year's amount is almost twice the transfer number of ten years ago (530) and thirteen times the figure of 30 years ago (87).

Of the footballers who emigrated abroad, 222 ended up in Asian clubs, 762 in Europe, 105 in other South American countries, 69 in North and Central America and 15 in Africa.

The most popular destination in Europe was Portugal, where 209 players moved to, followed by Germany (58), Switzerland (46) and Spain (34).

According to the CBF, Brazilian clubs don't have the necessary financial backing to compete with clubs from Europe and Asia, and this is the main reason why so many players are transferred abroad.

Each year younger players move abroad, and although Brazilian football still counts with extraordinary talent, this could diminish if this trend continues in the future.

In order to minimise the likelihood of this happening, a new project has been established which doesn't allow players under the age of 16 to sign professional contracts.

FC Barcelona's trip south to El Madrigal on Sunday evening is the Catalan club's last match in their run of games against their nearest title challengers and all those teams will be hoping that they stumble against Villarreal.

Real Madrid may have come to within 12 minutes of holding Pep Guardiola's team last weekend, a result that would have seen Sevilla and the Yellow Submarine gain some ground, but Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi both scored to ensure that the chasing pack are still playing catch-up.

That result against Los Merengues brought such jubilation to Barça's fans, despite none having any doubt beforehand, that the last match before the festive break has almost been forgotten.

Tucked in after the Madrid encounter and the headlines regarding possible Champions League opponents all week, the match could well  see the Blaugrana brought down to earth with a bump.

At least that is what the championship challengers are all hoping, because when the league resumes in January the Catalan outfit will start off against teams at the other end of the table.

All the other teams in and around the Champions League places have now been soundly beaten by Guardiola's team and that has given the impression that La Liga could well be over, despite nobody actually wanting to admit it.

In the second half of the season Barça do still have to go to Valencia, Atlético and Real Madrid, but it may all be a foregone conclusion by then, so any team that will not just sit back and defend, with no intention of scoring, is looked to in order to try and open things up.

Shrewd Tactician

One such team are Villarreal, and Manolo Pellegrini's side are unlikely to play meekly with nine behind the ball in front of their own fans against a team that they have a good home record against.

Instead, the Chilean coach will be shrewd and will no doubt pack his midfield in order to stifle Barça's short-passing game before testing their back-four on the counter-attack.

While question-marks can be raised, if really pushed, over individual members of the Catalan club's back-four, but as a unit whoever is included has impressed this term.

Villarreal's forwards will have to be at their very best to take anything from a defence that has conceded only nine goals in 15 league matches, while at the other end an incredible 46 goals have been scored by the Blaugrana.

The hosts on Sunday do not have quite such an impressive record, as they have netted just 26 times and let in 19 goals, but have been beaten just twice this term.

In fact, Villarreal's recent form has not been particularly good at all, with defeats at both Sevilla and Celtic coming on the back of a dramatic, yet disappointing, draw at home against Getafe.

Victory for Pellegrini's team would move them to within five points, but it would also allow either Real Madrid or Valencia, who meet in the Bernabéu on Saturday, to edge closer as well.

TEAM NEWS

TBA

Barcelona

Guardiola will, as usual, not name his squad until the day before the game. When Barça are at home he waits until the day itself, but only Gaby Milito is definitely out. Rafa Márquez has spent all week training to recover from a hamstring strain while Andrés Iniesta was also back after recovering from his injury.

PREDICTION

A week off will have done Barcelona no harm at all after so many midweek games in recent months, and Villarreal could well feel the full effects of a rested Blaugrana side. Pellegrini has been shrewd against Barça in the past at El Madrigal, but Guardiola is also proving to be a very adept tactician and will be looking at ways to counteract the hosts' stifling tactics in midfield.

Juan Roman Riquelme starred for Boca Juniors as they defeated city rivals Racing Club 2-1 in a tight clash at the Bombonera stadium on Sunday.

Boca went ahead in the 40th minute, when Riquelme beat Pablo Migliore with a well-placed penalty-kick.

But Racing replied just before the break, when Franco Sosa found the back of the net with a powerful header.

In the 59th minute Riquelme scored what ended up being the eventual match-winner with a superb volley.

It was a valuable victory for Boca, who remain in contention for their first championship since 2006, and their first under Carlos Ischia.

I know I sound like a stuck record but ...you cant keep a good man down ! Aye Riqui !

Villarreal CF emerged bruised but triumphant from a wonderful match against Aalborg BK, winning 6-3 but only after a test of fire from the Danish champions.

Power play
The second-half power-play, led by substitute Joseba Llorente's hat-trick will not erase a thrilling counter-attack display by the Danish side who nevertheless left empty handed. Two headers and a clever chip from Marek Saganowski, Thomas Enevoldsen and Andreas Johansson first gave AaB the lead, then squared the match and finally some late hope at 4-3. But counters from Giuseppe Rossi, Joan Capdevila, that devastating hat-trick from Llorente and a rare header from Robert Pirès completed the fightback on a thrilling night.

Saganowski excels
The first half was quite superb and an example of what self-belief and attacking intentions can achieve. Though the teams left the field at 2-2 the three key figures were all wearing the red-and-white stripes of AaB. Anders Due flashed up and down the right touchline like lightning and the only reason Kasper Bøgelund was not man of the first half was that Saganowski excelled him. Saganowski played what can be that lonely role as single striker but he performed magic. Twice in the first five minutes he dropped deep to flick on and the second time Due was clean in on Diego López's goal but failed to convert.

López saves
Notice had been served and the goal was delivered 14 minutes later. Bøgelund surged up the pitch, slipped possession to Due and went for the return. Instead the winger gave silver service to Saganowski and the headed goal was laid on a plate. One-nil should have been two, moments later, when López saved from Due's almost identical header. But just when the Danish champions were in the driving seat they failed to check in their rearview mirror.

Deft chip
Overlapping full-back Ángel López crossed for Rossi to clip in off Steve Olfers and Villarreal were back in it. The salvage job yielded more treasure when Capdevila struck with a soaring right-foot shot in the 33rd minute which looked to have turned the match. But the Danes were undaunted. Saganowski again dropped deep, fed Enevoldsen and his pace made the deft chip over López easier than it should have been for 2-2.

Clever tactic
The second half was equally good. Rossi's 46th-minute shot brought the best from AaB goalkeeper Karim Zaza as did a raking centre from Ángel ten minutes later. Pellegrini's demand that the midfield should press tightly around Saganowski ensured his lay-offs were mopped up. Chances flowed down the right and eventually substitute Llorente lobbed Zaza, but watched Michael Jakobsen clear off the line. Seconds later Llorente gobbled up the rebound off Zaza from Senna's 40-metre piledriver on 67 minutes and Villarreal were ahead.

Goal flood
Llorente struck again three minutes later off a fantastic assist from Robert Pirès but AaB still were not finished, Johansson adding another header seven minutes later to make the score 4-3. Pirès himself scored a rare headed goal on 79 minutes thanks to Cazorla's clever work before Llorente completed his hat-trick and the scoring with six minutes to play. AaB's three goals will worry Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini whose side had previously only conceded three goals in league and European football this season, but the night of champagne football ended with corks popping in the Madrigal and a sad hangover for the brave Danes.

An invincible Villarreal speed past Racing to go top after best ever start in La Liga
A 2-0 victory over the Cantabrian outfit put the Submarine in top spot in La Liga with 10 points from four league encounters, extending in the process its run without defeat to ten games
More photos
Two first half headers from Capdevila (27’) and Llorente (32’) were enough to see off the challenge of Racing Santander in the fourth day of the new La Liga season.  Villarreal’s victory stretched the Yellow’s unbeaten league run to 10, the last defeat being a 0-1 loss at Almeria last season.  It also means the home side has notched 10 points in its first four matches for the first time in its history.

After a less than promising start that saw the home side under pressure from Racing and grateful to Diego Lopez for winning his one on one battle with Valera, Villarreal took control with two knockout blows within the space of five first half minutes.  Angel on the right flank was the architect of both goals, the first coming in the 27th minutes when his cross found Capdevila at the far post to head past ToNo.  Just five minutes later after the best move of the match involving Pires, Senna and Cazorla, Angel’s cross found Llorente who headed past the Racing keeper.

With a 2-0 cushion, Pellegrini’s men held on for a comfortable victory, and despite the occasional counter attack from Valera, could in fact have increased the winning margin had efforts from Nihat and Senna been more accurate.

Arsenal, who trailed 3-1 after the first leg result in Avellaneda, pushed to the attack straight from the kick-off and had a couple of good opportunities to go ahead, but were kept out by Boca goalkeeper Mauricio Caranta.

But despite Arsenal's good start, Rodrigo Palacio fired Boca ahead in the 6th minute with an unstoppable volley after a precise cross from Lucas Viatri.

Boca may have been without an injured Martin Palermo, who will be out of action for eight months, but the match called for the return of Juan Roman Riquelme, who orchestrated Boca's finest moves.

Hugo Ibarra had a great opportunity to double Boca's lead, but he fired an effort onto the right post from close range, to the relief of Arsenal goalkeeper Cristian Campestrini.

Towards the end of the half Arsenal came more into the match, but they lacked the necessary quality to penetrate the Boca defense, who stood firm.

After the break Boca dominated their opponents, and with such a healthy lead and their 18th international title almost in the bag they seemed content to push the ball around in the midfield to the frustration of Arsenal.

In the 56th minute Riquelme sped up the field, side-footed a defender, and blasted an outstanding effort inches over the crossbar to the applause of the home crowd.

However, minutes later Arsenal drew level when Sebastian Carrera met a cross at the back post with a good finish.

Arsenal were reduced to ten men in the 65th minute when Carlos Diaz brought down Riquelme just outside of the box, but Daniel Garnero's side kept at the attack and they took a surprise lead through Mauro Matos.

In the 80th minute Cristian Diaz was also dismissed and Arsenal had to make do with only nine men for the final ten minutes of the match.

Boca took advantage of this, as with seconds remaining on the clock they were awarded an inviting free-kick on the edge of the area. Riquelme stepped up to the ball and curled in a sensational effort that crept into the front post.

Team Line-ups:

Boca Juniors 2: Mauricio Caranta, Hugo Ibarra, Julio Cesar Caceres, Gabriel Paletta, Claudio Morel Rodriguez, Fabian Vargas, Sebastian Battaglia, Jesus Datolo (Cristian Chavez), Juan Roman Riquelme, Rodrigo Palacio (Ricardo Noir) and Lucas Viatri.

Arsenal de Sarandi 2: Cristian Campestrini, Dario Espinola, Carlos Baez, Anibal Matellan, Cristian Diaz, Sebastian Carrera (Sergio Sena), Carlos Casteglione, Javier Yacuzzi, Alejandro Gomez, Mauro Matos (Facundo Coria) and Luciano Leguizamon (Jose Contreras).

Goals: Rodrigo Palacio (6'), Sebastian Carrera (59'), Mauro Matos (70'), Juan Roman Riquelme (90').

What about Track & Field / Crawford picks Brown for de final
« on: August 04, 2008, 07:43:40 AM »
Well if I just give my opinion again on this topic I could be labelled an obsessive, compulsive...so I asked Hasley Crawford, the Caribbean's only Olympic gold medalist over 100 metres, what he thought of T&T's chances in Beijing in the 100 metres for men .
According to Crawfie Darrel Brown is the one with the best chance.
Of course dem stats boys go want more dan that ...well Crawford thinks Thompson has hard a hard campaign and might be short of rest... Brown , he says, is looking good and in good form. Brown's time 10.06 recently was not a bad run and he mentioned that he ran 10.3 just before Montreal. " Doh worry bout times ..it is the man who can handle de pressure who go win "
" dem fellas go break de world record ...but in the semis not in de finals ...in de finals it will be about who can handle de pressure

Football / Imagine Maradona and Romario in your attack
« on: June 06, 2008, 05:34:12 AM »
The albicelestes warmed to the task by slicing through Concacaf powerhouse Mexico two days ago. There seems to be a widening gap between the two rivals after that close game in the WC 2006. What do you expect however if Argentina are now able to pair two of their most exciting young players Messi and Kun ?
the two built on the molds of Maradona and Romario will cause any defense problems .
Thought I might add a little highlights ...
I love this game !!!

Looking Forward to the Semifinals

Boca Juniors are already looking forward to the first-leg match for the Libertadores Cup semifinals against Fluminense, and the team leader, Juan Román Riquelme, spoke at a press conference about this game where our team will try to obtain a good result before going to Brazil for the second-leg.

The attacking midfielder spoke this Monday at a press conference and shared his wish of winning the Libertadores Cup once again with the Xeneizes. "We're very close to playing another final. This Wednesday it will be difficult. I know the supporters will chant throughout the game. I hope we can win the cup and repay the fans for all their love".

Riquelme went on to praise Martín Palermo, who scored the hat trick in Mexico that allowed Boca to move on to the following round: "He had an amazing game. If he starts scoring often, we'll have a leg up and nobody will talk about Riquelme, Dátolo or Palacio. He's the best striker of the last ten years".

The attacking midfielder also spoke about the chance of returning to Japan if the team wins the cup. In 2007, he traveled with the squad but could not play: "It was tough and nice at the same time. I felt like useless shit because I couldn't do anything. I also had a very good experience there. Last time we deserved to lose. But it would be nice to return to Japan".

Finally, he also praised youngster Cristian Chávez, who is playing his first matches for the first team. "He runs like Tévez. 'Pochi' has better technique than Carlitos: he can give an assist and take over a game. He is just starting and Carlitos is already a star. I hope he gets to be half as good as Tévez".

For the match against Fluminense, Ischia apparently will field the same lineup that beat Atlas in Mexico: Pablo Migliore; Jonatan Maidana, Julio César Cáceres, Gabriel Paletta, Claudio Morel Rodríguez; Cristian Chávez, Sebastián Battaglia, Jesús Dátolo; Juan Román Riquelme; Rodrigo Palacio, Martín Palermo.

The problem is that they want to keep Grant on in another position at the club, and Ten cate is his assistant...
If Chelsea want pretty football ..they might already have the answer at Stamford Bridge

Craft and Quality

Boca Juniors  beat Brazil's Cruzeiro by 2-1 (an aggregate of 4-2, adding up the two legs) in the return match in Brazil and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Libertadores de América Cup. Its next opponent will once more be Mexico's Atlas, just like in the round robin stage of the competition.

At 37' forward  Rodrigo Palacio fired an impressive rightfooter from the gate to the rival box, thereby opening the score.

At 44'  Dátolo sent a cross from the left and Palermo, taller and more alert than his marker, sent the ball into the net with his forehead.

Concentration, order and tactical discipline were the salient virtues of our team.

Battaglia thwarted the opponent's attacks at midfield and distributed the ball  with savvy. Palermo, moving backward,  provided valuable aid to his defence and scored a decisive goal in a key moment of the game.

Earlier, when the score was still blank, Caranta stopped a rival cross, passed the ball to Dátolo, who sent a  deep pass to Palacio. The man from Bahia outran his marker and , face to face with goalie Fabio, ruined a clear scoring opportunity.

All of Boca's defence proved solid and efficient, but junior Monzon outshone his peers. The wingback marked striker Moreno to perfection and, whenever he found the field ahead of him clear, moved forward up to the rival's area. He gave the impression of a veteran with several Cup titles to his credit.

As always, Riquelme managed  his team and the pace of the game. He was also responsible for the red card shown to Ramires who, out of sheer impotence for not being able to get hold of the ball at Riquelme's feet, brought the playmaker down with a savage foul.
Dátolo turned in  another splendid performance. His intelligence  used the left side of the field to Boca's advantage and his technique and speed were a constant support for Riquelme. Both of them assisted Palacio and  Palermo with their intelligent perception of  what was happening  on the field.

The craft and experience of our team showed up once more. It proved that its level rises in the face of adversity.

Now it is time to face Atlas once again, just like in the round robin stage of the tournament. Now there is one less hurdle to overcome before taking home another Cup.
