Liverpool stare into abyss as Champions League exile looms

by Mark Ogden
February 2, 2008
LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jamie Carragher has conceded that Liverpool go into Saturday's clash with Sunderland with a fight on their hands to secure Champions League qualification this season after admitting that Rafa Benitez's team are now no-hopers in the race for the Premier League title.

Having spent in excess of 40 million pounds on the likes of Fernando Torres, Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun, Liverpool had been billed as serious challengers for the title this season.

But having lost at West Ham to an injury-time Mark Noble penalty in midweek, Benitez's team are 17 points behind leaders Manchester United and hopes of a first league title since 1990 have been quashed.

Now, the prospect of missing out on Champions League qualification is a growing possibility and former England defender Carragher, who recently played his 500th game for Liverpool, admits that Benitez's squad must focus on sealing a top four finish rather than continuing to dream about the title.

He said: "I think the league has gone and we've got to realise that we're fighting with Everton, Aston Villa and Manchester City for that top four place.

"I've always said that you get what you deserve in football and, if results aren't going well like they're not at the moment, that's something we've got to turn around quickly.

"The teams at the top of the table are a long way away and we've got to just focus on the Sunderland game on Saturday and try and get three points from that. It's been a few games now since we got all three points and we need to get more points on the board."

Despite their hugely disappointing league campaign, which has increased the uncertainty surrounding Benitez's future as manager, Liverpool remain in the FA Cup and Champions League and Carragher believes that those competitions can be the club's salvation this season.

He said: "It's not all doom and gloom. We're still in two very big cup competitions and, as I say, we want to do well in them.

"I think the desire is there, but the league form isn't good enough and the sooner we sort that out the better.

"At the moment things aren't going for us, but I don't think it's about luck. West Ham is a tough place to go and obviously we are not playing great and confidence is a bit low, but if we'd got a point there it would have been a step in the right direction."

Rade Prica is likely to start his first game for Sunderland after making an impressive appearance as a substitute in their midweek victory over Birmingham City, which lifted Roy Keane's side out of the relegation zone.

The Swedish striker, signed from Danish club Aalborg, scored within 20 minutes and had another goal ruled out for offside and he did enough to convince Keane that he is ready to start at Anfield.

Prica said: "The win against Birmingham was very important, but we have to concentrate and take one game at a time. We have to think about Liverpool now."

The Swede is even coping well with the winter weather in the North East of England. Keane has described recent 80mph winds as a "nightmare" disruption to their training sessions.

But the manager added: "I had a word with Rade about it and he thought it wasn't too bad. So there's hope for him!"

Keane

We missed our penalty and they scored theirs and that’s it, end of story. You get what you deserve in life – we ended up with nothing and that’s what we deserved.

We can talk all night about this and that, possession and doing OK – we said the same at West Ham and we said the same at Man City, but you get what you deserve.

It’s all a learning curve for us but, again, the penny has to drop – we can’t keep having the same conversations after games and at half-time saying there’s something there for us. I’m sick of saying the same things to the media.

Yorkie has given the referee an opportunity to send him off and I’ve got no real complaints.

It’s not nice but obviously the aim is not to be in the bottom three come May. We had a chance of getting further away from it tonight and these opportunities keep slipping us by. Come the end of the season we hope we don’t come to regret it too much.

Our home form is just keeping us in touch. We need to start picking up points away from home and tonight was the perfect opportunity, they were there for the taking, but we didn’t take it.

We had a penalty, missed it and they’ve scored, and it summed up the game I suppose.

We took Kenwyne (Jones) off because he was limping before half-time and we didn’t want to take any chances with him, Kenwyne’s a big player for us and we should have a better idea over the next 24 to 48 hours how he is, but it’s hopefully not too serious.

Make Yorke and Latas coach??? of our senior team ???...u serious...???

Some ah allyuh does think outta allyuh ASS yes!!

First off not every great player makes a great coach...

Secondly, if anything, Latas possess more coaching experience than Yorkie so his name should be in front of Yorkie (nothing against Yorke)....

And Third, the only two high positions I could see Latas getting (not Yorke) is either an assistant to head coach of the Sr team or the Head coach of the U23's and/or U20's....

Good post Bago, all de best for de holiday season, send some doubles meh way when yuh geh ah chance  ;D

Football / Re: Wim Rijsbergen suspended !
« on: December 22, 2007, 12:32:14 PM »
As its already been pointed out on this site, it appears Wim was suspended on 5th December. Wim has not contacted FPATT to discuss this or ask for assistance. As somebody inside the TTFF, I guess he believes that FPATT do not have enough power or ability to assist him. If, however, Wim approached FPATT, they wouls advise him, even though he is neither a member or a player.

I would like to make a couple of observations on the discussion so far.  First, it is usual for a coach to be offered a 4 year contract, as the aim is to qualify for the next world cup. However, in some instances a 2 year clause is included. That way, if the performance of the team is not going well, there is time to get a new coach in place for WC qualifiers.

I am surprised nobody on this site has mentioned the name of John Barnes as the next coach. He said in his interview that he would be interested in coaching at any level in the Caribbean.

 http://youtube.com/watch?v=-F1Rc-VdiLA  Check around 6.20 mark.

Its very convenient that he is returning in January. Also, he seems to be great friends with Jack Warner.

Barnes would be a massive PR victory for TTFF. Ex England International, won just about everything at club level, has great contacts in the game, would raise T&Ts profile in England and USA and has Trini blood in his veins.

Just a thought.

Yes but what are JB's qualifications as a coach???

You saying he should cut  he teeth with our SENIOR team??
