'We have the weight of history to battle' - Dravid

Siddhartha Vaidyanathan in Antigua

June 1, 2006

Rahul Dravid: No illusions about what lies ahead

Rahul Dravid slipped up a bit by saying that no-one from his team was born when India won their last Test series in the West Indies - he forgot that Anil Kumble was a six-month old baby then - but the fact remains that India need to overcome the weight of history if they harbour hopes of a victorious campaign.

"We haven't won here for 35 years and we have the weight of history to battle," said Dravid on the eve of the game, "and it's a great opportunity for us to change that. I don't think too many of us, in fact any of us, were even born when India won here last time. The last two series were disappointing. In '97 we failed to chase 126 at Barbados and lost the series because of that; last time, we won at Trinidad and lost at Barbados and Jamaica. So it would be good to erase those memories with a good performance here."

Dravid knew the enormity of the challenge facing India, especially because they were starting at a venue where Brian Lara averages close to 86. "We've watched those two records [Lara's 375 and 400 not out] and seen what he can do. Each player has a favourite ground and we know we need to get him out early."

One of Dravid's bowlers who may need to get the early wickets, though, is looking increasingly short of confidence. Yet, Dravid didn't think Pathan's current form was a major concern. "He's been working quite hard and I wouldn't say it's a concern," he added. "I'm sure he knows that he could have bowled much better in the one-day series. Hopefully he'll come good in the Test series. He does a dual role for us with his batting and bowling. Tests will be a different ball game and give him a bit more time with longer spells and so on."

Both captains spoke about the importance of starting well and Lara hoped that his side would adjust into the Test format. "We've had a couple of days out in Antigua and the guys know that they have to adjust their game. It's been a very good ground for me personally and I'm looking to start positively."

Tendulkar to miss West Indies tour

'I don't know. I leave it to the doctors to guide me in the right direction' - Sachin Tendulkar, when asked about his uncertain future
Sachin Tendulkar has ruled himself out of India's tour to the West Indies after deciding not to undergo a scheduled fitness test. Speaking to reporters, Tendulkar said, "We have been trying hard. Andrew Leipus has been with me all the time and all my sessions were monitored. There is weakness in my arm. I am not still ready to compete at the international level. I will be going to London for further treatment."

Tendulkar was unsure about how long the treatment is likely to take, or indeed when he will regain full fitness. When asked, he said "It's a difficult question. I don't know. I leave it to the doctors to guide me in the right direction. The doctor will be in touch with the board." Tendulkar will leave for London tonight to consult with Andrew Wallace, the doctor who operated on his shoulder.

Leipus, the former India physiotherapist, said that Tendulkar needed to rest and recuperate, instead of over-exerting himself with training. "Primarily the decision has been based on functional weakness, not on performance basis. We don't want him to do any further damage to his shoulder. We are looking at the big picture of his career. Recovery is important. He can't just keep training - he has to rest in order to get his body stronger."

Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said that the Board was keen to have Tendulkar in the team as soon as possible and his rehabilitation process will be reviewed in two to three weeks time by the team management.

Tendulkar's shoulder ruled him out of the recent ODI series against England and is a further blow in what has been an injury-plagued period in his career; the problem comes on the back of a tennis elbow he suffered last season. The injuries have been compounded by a relative lack of success on the field.

Shah said Wasim Jaffer, the opener, who underwent and passed a fitness test today following a shin surgery, was fit and available for selection. "We looked at it (Jaffer's fitness test) from the point of view of his legs and he is fit," Leipus said. "He was slightly out of breath today because he is recovering from viral fever"

The Indian squad for the four-Test series against the West Indies will be announced here tomorrow. The first Test begins at Antigua on June 2.

Football / Match Reports - T&T vs. Peru
« on: May 10, 2006, 06:48:31 PM »

VERY DISSAPOINTING
Sub-standard performance from the T&T Squad
Throughout the match, T&T looked too predictable and slow, they take too long in the back and cant find spaces in the middle so they resort to the wings. But Peru had a 4 line defence which made it almost impossible to get through on the flanks

Taking off Latapy made sense to me, eventho he contributed some good ball control and opened up some T&T players with good through balls, he was contributing to the slow pace of our squad.
Samuel broght that speed we needed along with Jones,Spann and Scotland
We still need efficient crossers of the ball, Spann,Samuel ,Edwards, and John are all inconsistents crossers.
Samuel does alot of running but his end product is a 50/50 ball, similar to Edwards, who does a lot of fancy footwork with 50/50 cross

I am not compfortable with Lawernce in our back 4, he is too slow and clumbsy with the ball at times, Gray is a decent defender, just has to watch his temper sometimes...As for John, ah could live with him.
Sancho did a good job also

To tell you the truth, Trinidad and Tobago lost this match in my eyes...they were plain and the same throughout the match...not much possession in midfield, and they took to long to build up from the back

Jones goal with a FK,,,very well taken....but it was a goal made out of nothing...............
T&T need to play much faster and precise if they was to make a good impression in the world cup.

Lemme hear allyuh views on this match..

HEART BROKEN

The day began.. i sign up on de xbox as usual
didnt have a good run
won one match 1-0
lost the other 2-0
won the other 3-2
Not enuff at all

So i just stay back and watch mih brother play....
Then they announced that there were 3 more spots open for a new group...
my heart jumped...i thought it had to be fate
only to realise that it was only PS2
but i say to myslelf...look daz no scene yes
i go do anyting!
I take a brave venture and give $100 to play with a wierdass madcatz controller to try and get tru
So i sign up

Now dat control was a PS2 control...not a normal one either and i never play fifa on ps2
First match i use a Brazil 4-2-4
De man choose Spain
I was defensive throughout the match
and i was able to hit him on the counter attacks and he also made a few mistakes at the back ..some of which i put away
but he kept comin and i started to feel pressured and made mistakes also........
Match Ended 5-4 in his favor....
It was really about how much goal u score..not how many u win...so i was kool wit it

Next Match
I use a Barca 4-4-2
De man chose Brazil
He started attacking and once again i kept hitting him on the counter attacks,
He get in some good goals but everytime i break one the wing i almost always scored or went out for corner.......
Ronaldinho was mih main man in dat match
De fella was pretty gud and was actually th e one who take my first place  >:(
Match end 3-3
Still in the run..
De same man who had beat me 5-4 in the first man had to play against that 3-3 man next

WELL BOII
de man disappoint me.......he give de man a fawking 7-1 victory.........PRESSHA NOW
cuz de man had a total of 13 pts now...losing 3-3 on a nex man...who i had to face as shown below

LAST MATCH
I needed at least 4 or 5 goals
and de man was not easy ....prolly the hardest in the group...yes they was all hard back men
I chose my beloved Brazil and went with a 4-3-3 dis time...cuz de man was using a 3-4-1-2
MAtch start...i suddenly forget what R2 and R1 was oui
so it take me a while to setle back..
de man score 2 goals on me in de first half....
i was really playing shit dat half
i prolly get 1 shot on goal.......
Second Half start...man getting confident that he was getting tru cuz all he need was 4 or 5 just like me
He relll attacking and once again as i do every1 i hat dem on counter attack....send ball up in de middle and utilize Ronaldinho and Robinho into space.....
First Goal i send a tru ball to Robinho and i cross de ball in to meet Ronaldo head. 2-1...i start to get back hope
De man come back again..with pressure and buss de net...3-1
no scene ..i just battle on
Nex goal..i do a 1-2 wit Robinho and Ronaldo collect de ball at the endge of de box and i chip de keeper oui!
Men start to bawl wit dat one...cuz i was rell far from goal
3-2
Time running out and i send a long cross ball to Robinho feet
run up to the edge of box and send a hopeful shot.. the ball hit of the post and score..great goal
men clapping and ting
de opponent was in disbelief dat i come back and win yes..and also dat he ent get tru
cuz he was reall boasting at de biginning
Match done 4-2 i win
So in total i had 12 points.. :(
man tally up and make a mistake oui
he tell me dat i get tru
i say WAH?
but den he check ova and de nex fella get it....
boy i was so close....
but thats that man
i just proud of myself yes...almost getting tru wit a madcatz ps2 control

On November the 12th
Alot of "die Hard Supporters" were unable to see the Bahrain Match....due to long lines which made it almost impossible to get a ticket..
But think about this for a moment
You tellin me that A DIE HARD SUPPORTER wouldnt wait in the line how many hours before de ticket booth open whether it be camp out etc.???? and instead come whenever dey feel  and miss out???
I believe as a DIE HARD supporter I would find it a duty to put myself in the line early o clock in the morning to get my tickets

So i think that this rubbish about die hard supporters missing out on the Bahrain Game due to flooded gates and cheap tickets is utter UTTER BullsHyt

Therefore Price raising...i doh really see de y iz necessary

Man Utd 2-0 Arsenal
Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring for Manchester United
Rooney's strike was unstoppable
Wayne Rooney and Ji-Sung Park scored as Manchester United won their ninth successive Premiership match.

Rooney controlled Mikael Silvestre's brilliant cross before shooting past Jens Lehmann and later crossed for Park to score from close range.

Lehmann had superbly saved from Rooney twice before his goal, while Kolo Toure appeared to divert a strike from the forward on to the post with his hand.

United keeper Edwin van der Sar made good saves from Robin van Persie.

The result means Sir Alex Ferguson's team move back to within seven points of Chelsea, who defeated West Ham 4-1 earlier on Sunday.

United have five games left to catch the reigning champions, including a match at Stamford Bridge against Jose Mourinho's team.

But the victory over Arsenal means United are assured of finishing in the top four - and thus qualifying for next seaon's Champions League.

Ferdinand and Vidic were awesome but it was a great performance all round
From RUA
Have your say on 606

For Arsenal, though, their ninth away defeat in the Premiership this season leaves them five points behind north London rivals Tottenham in the race for fourth place.

It could have been different for Arsene Wenger's team if they had converted one of their early chances - in a match played in front of a Premiership record crowd of 70,908.

Despite relegating Thierry Henry to the bench Arsenal made the early running. Gary Neville made a superb challenge to deny Emmanuel Adebayor after he had been played through by Alexander Hleb and Van der Sar saved from Van Persie.

It took United a while to settle but eventually they started to threaten, Lehmann punching clear a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick and then making two superb saves to deny Rooney.

Each time Rooney shot across Lehmann, the first from 20 yards and the second considerably closer but from a tighter angle.

Arsenal looked to break quickly and Van der Sar made a superb save low to his left to thwart Van Persie.

Van Nistelrooy, starting ahead of Louis Saha, started to assert his influence on the contest, shooting wide from a tight angle and forcing Lehmann into action with a header.

And it was a superb through ball from Van Nistelrooy that led to the major incident of the first half.

He played Rooney through and his team-mate took the ball around Lehmann before shooting goalwards.

Toure, struggling to regain his feet, appeared to handle as he dived to his right to try to stop Rooney's strike. The ball was deflected against the post but the incident went unnoticed by referee Graham Poll.

Rooney was not to be denied after the break - the 20-year-old smashing the ball past Lehmann after taking one touch to control Silvestre's cross.

Arsenal went in search of an equaliser, with Adebayor shooting narrowly over and Van Persie failing to convert Emmanuel Eboue's cross.

Eboue brilliantly eluded Rooney before cutting inside but his ball to Van Persie was struck firmly, making it difficult for his team-mate to make a decisive contact.

Arsenal introduced Henry with 18 minutes left but Park's goal took the match beyond the away team.
