Football / Re: We can learn much from Jamaica
« on: December 04, 2005, 07:49:39 PM »There is much we can learn from Jamaica's World Cup qualification. When Jamiaca scaled those dizzying heights in 1998, I celebrated with them. I was overjoyed that a tiny Caribbean nation had succeed in gracing the world stage. But, many Jamaicans, and particularly those in charge of their football began to think and act like they had scaled the summit, that they had reached the peak. To some extent they were blinded by subsequent qualifications at the youth (boys) level. But where are they today? Jamaica's men national team argueably had gathered the most talented team in their history for the 2006 qualification battle only to fall upon their own swords! Losses to Panama, and the USA as well as uncharacteristic ties in the "office," saw them crash out of making it to the Hex.WELL SAID
Today their Federation is broke and the programme seems in shambles. This is a sad indictment of all that can easily go wrong if proper planning is not put in place for continued success. Jamaica's strory is indeed a sad one. Blessed with an abundance of natural talent and a never say die attitude, they were ultimately undone by poor administration.
So exactly what can we learn from their misfortune? Answer: EVERYTHING!
WE MUST PUT THIS QUALIFICATION INTO PERSPECTIVE!
We were very fortunate to squeeze into the Cup on the last day of qualification. This team has obvious talent, but talent is not enough to compete! Our Federation is always broken. Here is one suggestion, let the Federation invest in the T&T Unit Trust. ask fans and corporations to make monthly tax deductible donations into the "Football Development Fund." Have an independent Organization monitor and administer the fund..full transparency and equitable disbursement to ALL national teams.
We MUST AT ALL COSTS, put a proper working plan into place to ensure we keep the momentum from this qualification. These are my suggestions for the future..Please free to add points, and comment.
1. Youth development, this includes training coaches effectively.
2. Proper Administration. Putting the right men not the yes men in decision making positions
3. Fan support. This will improve as teams compete i.e really compete at all levels U14-senior teams
4. Development of the PFL and other leagues. includes proper referee qualifications
5. Effective fund raising to alleviate governmental dependence. a supporters club can assist here.
6. Effective scouting includes yearly combines in the US and Europe
7. Better school's leagues. Make league longer include more teams.
8. More internationals for all National Teams
9. Attention to other teams, ie women, Female U15-U21; and boys U14-U21 and Olympic teams.
10. Education for players of all levels. Education opens doors, promotes nationalism.
It is my belief that if we can effectively administer our football, we can see successes at al levels with ALL national teams. That is what most countries with any measure of success do, they have proper administration and execute plans. In T&T we have a culture of: "leh we plan, den procastinate and hurry up to do last minute ting." This has resulted in too many past failures, accompanied by a revolving door of coaches, some near misses, fan apathy, player frustration and a near do well syndrome.
Let us use this World Cup qualification to forge forward. Those in charge of our footbal have an unique opportunity. They are in a postion to see T&T's football enter a new phase, an evolution that will make the world sit up and notice us for all the talent and vibrance that we as trinis possess; that this was not "a one off," that we may be small but we ain't fraid at all.
We have created history by being the smallest nation geographically and by population to ever make it to the biggest stage of the worlds greatest game, the beautiful game. Those in power can see to it that we grace this stage with aplomb and dignity, not just this time, and not just at the senior men's level. We have in these tiny isles immense talent, we have been blessed with an abundance of natural resources, and a great and creative people. Let us show the world what it truely means when we proclaim : "Together we aspire, together we achieve!"
HOWEVER
AH TIRED HEARING DIS SAME TING OVER AND OVER
AND UNTIL THE SPEAKING STOPS AND THE ACTIONS ARE TAKEN
THESE WORDS MEAN NOTHING
