Football / Soccernet just mentioned this website
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:30:28 AM »
That is a huge accomplishment to see www.socawarriors.net being mentioned in a soccernet article:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/967803/world-cup:-trinidad-and-tobago-coach-otto-pfister-refuses-to-panic?cc=5901
-----

Otto Pfister is remaining calm ahead of his Trinidad and Tobago side's must-win qualifier against Barbados.

A surprise 2-1 defeat to Bermuda in Hamilton on Friday means the Soca Warriors are already three points behind Group B rivals Guyana in their bid to move into the next stage of qualification.

As a result, three wins from their remaining three fixtures are vital, but Pfister is not yet fearing the worst.

"Bermuda were a good team on Friday,'' the veteran German boss told www.socawarriors.net. "I never look for excuses but we had three or four key players that didn't play and we had three players that played for me for the first time.

"That was difficult for the co-ordination. We now have a home game and I think the competition is open. Bermuda also have their next game at home. This is football and we have to respect the defeat and go again.

"There is no need to press the panic button. In football you have three possibilities. Win, lose or draw. We lost, but the first two games we won and now we have to try and win again.''

Barbados are bottom of the pool and have yet to either score or register a point. Bermuda will look to force their way into the reckoning for top spot by producing another shock, this time against Guyana in Prospect.

In Group D, Canada will put their perfect record on the line against Puerto Rico in Toronto.

A 7-0 win over St Lucia on Friday means Stephen Hart's side are four points clear of St Kitts and Nevis at the top of the group, and a win will put them within touching distance of the next stage.

"It is nice to be home and to know we will have some following on Tuesday,'' Hart said of his side's return to home soil.

St Kitts and St Lucia pair off in the group's other game.

Another side with a 100% record are El Salvador. Ruben Israel's men face Group A's bottom nation the Cayman Islands in San Salvador, where a win is expected of them.

"We hope to reach a good level and perform to get the result,'' defender Victor Turcios said on www.laprensagrafica.com. "From the first day of the group we were told not to underestimate any team. They will want to give their utmost to get the result.''

Suriname host the Dominican Republic in the group's other game.

Elsewhere, Haiti will look to extend their faultless run to four wins from as many games when they face Curacao in their Group F clash in Port-au-Prince, with Antigua hosting the US Virgin Islands in the same pool.

In Group C, Panama take on Nicaragua in Panama City, and Guatemala go up against Belize in Group E.

Football / Simoes names squad for Canada

Canada Squad for World Cup Qualifier

Harbour View midfielder Jermaine Hue cemented his return to the Reggae Boyz band when he was named in a squad of 20 selected for Jamaica’s opening encounter in the semi-final round of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

Hue, 30, only returned to the national squad earlier this month after his last call up for the Ash Wednesday friendly against Costa Rica, in which he did not feature. Accompanying Hue’s return was confirmation that 28-year-old striker Marlon King will not play a part in the game against Canada.

The squad was a largely local-based one with 18-year-old Reno midfielder Davion Thorpe set to travel with the senior team for the first time while fellow youngster and clubmate Evan Taylor who made his debut in June against St Vincent and the Grenadines, keeps his place in the squad. Sporting Central midfielder Jevaughn Watson could earn his second cap for the country following his El Salvador debut as he too is on the list along with Colorado Rapids forward Omar Cummings who made his debut in the same game. Technical director Simoes was full of praise for the hardworking player, especially his movement on and off the ball a quality which will serve the team well.

Also included in the squad are the ever presents in captain Ricardo Gardner, Tyrone Marshall, goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, Rodolph Austin, Demar Phillips, Luton Shelton and Andy Williams. The team will depart Saturday morning for Toronto, Canada and return Thursday, following Wednesday’s game.

Meanwhile the officials for the game are Referee Carlos Batres, Assistant Referees Rodolfo Gonzales and Alejo Mendez all from Guatemala. There countryman Walter Lopez will be the fourth official while Francis Cezair of Trinidad and Tobago has been assigned the duties of Match Commissioner and Carlos Ortiz, Referee Assessor.

Full squad: Goalkeepers – Ricketts, Shawn Sawyers; Defenders – Marshall, Ian Goodison, Keneil Moodie, O’Brian Woodbine, Demar Stewart, Jermaine Taylor; Midfielders – Austin, Thorpe, Evan Taylor, Watson, Hue, Gardner, and Wolry Wolfe; Forwards – Deon Burton, Cummings and Williams.

Football / The King gets the axe
« on: August 07, 2008, 04:47:10 PM »

When the national anthems are being played before Jamaica face Canada in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifier in Toronto on August 20, Marlon King will not be around. King, one of the leading strikers for Jamaica over the last four years has not been recalled to the squad by Technical Director Rene Simoes.

“He has not yet received a call up for that game as yet,” responded the media manager of Wigan Athletic, when contacted Wednesday by JamaicaWin.com. “Maybe he will get a call soon.” That was the response given regarding King’s call up for the game against Canada.

Technical director Rene Simoes then confirmed that all the players for this game have been officially notified. “All the players have been called,” Simoes said. “The final list will be made public when we finish the camp (on August 14).”

King last played for Jamaica against the Bahamas in the first of two games at the National Stadium, scoring once in a 7-0 thrashing. Perhaps the writing was on the wall in the second game when he sat on the substitute’s bench for the 90 minutes.

In a letter to the media last month, Simoes hinted that there would be surprises. After speaking about discipline, self control, developing a winning habit and developing a positive and creative attitude, perhaps the most telling of all the passages would be the following: “Dear Jamaicans, these are the things we are working with our players, some will be there some will not. I will not compromise my principles in the name of a player, or the clubs or the persons who are connected to them,” he said in the ‘letter.’

Prompted by this letter which can be seen in its entirety on JamaicaWin.com , calls were made to clubs in England enquiring about the call up of Jamaican players to the squad for this game.

“We have to work as a team,” Simoes pointed out as he waited on his players after a practice match where they beat Premier League team Harbour View 2-1. “I have no time to work with those who cannot fit into the unit. When I came here the first time I had enough time to make changes as we went along. On this occasion, we have to work with those who can fit into the team.”

He went on to say that football has changed over the years to the point where any team can do without any one player. “Manchester United has not done badly since David Beckham moved to Real Madrid,” he pointed out.

This would not be the first time that Simoes has picked teams without some of Jamaica’s most celebrated players. Walter Boyd and Onandi Lowe come to mind, but there were others who were left off on various occasions as the Brazilian found them wanting. King was suspended for two years in 2006 by the past JFF administration for indiscipline, but he was reinstated by the new administration after the elections last November.

King made his debut for Jamaica against Venezuela in April, 2004 scoring once and two months later scored a hat-trick against Haiti in a World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium. The prolific striker scored twice when Jamaica beat El Salvador 3-0 in San Salvador.

The Brazilian said that the players for Jamaica’s second game in the qualifiers against Mexico on September 6 are yet to be confirmed. “It is a long time between the two games, so we have to wait and see. It could be the same players or we may call others,” he informed. “The door is never closed.”

Football / Let the mind-games begin. Simoes to launch FIFA inquiry
« on: August 07, 2008, 04:43:22 PM »
The Jamaica Football Federation will be seeking clarification from FIFA regarding a few areas of concern as the Reggae Boyz prepare to meet Canada in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on August 20.

“They always water the field before a game and at half time,” Rene Simoes pointed out to JamaicaWin.com. “This makes the field extremely fast and gives them an advantage. We would like to know if this practice is permitted.”

The Brazilian went on to say that this query is part of the preparation for the game. “We would want to know everything,” Simoes said. “We would like to prepare before the game and not wait until afterwards and then we complain. If it is OK to water the field, we will have to water our field and practice sometimes.” Simoes said that if it is permissible for the Canadians to water the field, which is artificial and does not need water, the JFF would be ensuring that when the Reggae Boyz practice on the pitch before the game, it is properly watered similar to a game situation to give Jamaica’s players the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the slick surface.

The Technical director said that the JFF will also ask FIFA to look at the dimension of the BMO field where the game is scheduled to be played as it appears to be much smaller than the FIFA minimum dimensions.

Simoes also pointed out that the JFF will also seek clarification regarding the amount of days that the players will be available to him before the game. August 20 is not an official match date on the FIFA calendar but rather a day for International Friendly games. On official match dates, the clubs are obligated to release the players four days in advance. However, on other dates they are only obligated to release the players only two days before.

Simoes said that preparations for the game are ongoing. “We have been watching all the videos that we can get our hands on,” Simoes told JamaicaWin.com. A squad of local-based players has been called to camp starting on Thursday and ending on August 14. He also said that one of his assistants, Lucio Gama, has been assigned to attend and spy on the game between Mexico and Honduras at the Azteca on August 20. Jamaica host Mexico at the National Stadium on September 6.

JamaicaWin.com will have minute by minute ‘LIVE TEXT’ coverage of Jamaica’s World Cup games as well as twice per day updates starting one week before each game. Send a link to your friend all over the world so they can be informed.

National Stadium approved, says FIFA.
IAN BURNETT, Sports Editor

ZURICH, Switzerland - Gordon Savic, head of the FIFA Competitions Services Department, on Thursday reconfirmed in a very clear manner that Jamaica's National Stadium in Kingston has been approved by the FIFA for the World Cup Qualifier against The Bahamas on June 15.

Savic preferred not to be recorded for an interview, as he said he was "not issuing a statement", but was only facilitating the Sporting World's query as a guest of the Home of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland.

He said recent information circulating in Jamaica that the National Stadium was not approved for the game was not true, and had there been a problem he would know because all such information originate from his office here at the FIFA.
He added that there was no cause for concern as the National Stadium was among those approved by the FIFA inspection team during the 18-month worldwide inspection of facilities.

Savic said he first heard of the news when contacted by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) general secretary Horace Reid the day before.

It is understood that information circulating earlier in the week in Jamaica was that only provisional approval was granted by the FIFA for the game because $60 million was needed to install an electronic security system, as well as improved medical systems for players and spectators, along with additional fencing and signage.

The bathroom and vending facilities were also said to be in need of urgent attention in the Bleachers.

Reid, himself a FIFA Stadium and Security Inspector, was appalled at the traction the news item got, considering that it did not originate from the FIFA.

"I was very surprised to learn that there was some amount of controversy regarding the FIFA approval of the National Stadium," he said.

"Only six weeks ago FIFA completed its second inspection and approved the facility, and in fact when I heard of the controversy I immediately called FIFA and spoke with the head of the Competitions Services Department, Gordon Savic, who is also my colleague, and he, too, expressed shock and surprise at that kind of news."

Like Savic, Reid sought to set the record straight: "But FIFA has approved the facility, there are no issues that would prevent us from staging our games, and in fact FIFA has already done the appointments (match officials) for the first World Cup qualifier against The Bahamas in Kingston on 15th June, and there will be an inspection now for the Trelawny Stadium on the 29th of April."

That second leg game on June 18 will begin at 4:00 pm.
Reid added: "The FIFA inspector will arrive in Montego Bay on the afternoon of April 29 and do the inspection. Currently we have a number of the JFF officers, Raymond Anderson, Bruce Gaynor and Peter Prendergast, overseeing the arrangements that we need to have in place with Independence Park Limited, managers of the facility.

"But again I don't quite understand why that news would be given to the Jamaican people. It begs the question if someone is creating mischief, or is trying to embarrass somebody else, but there is absolutely no need for that because the Stadium has been approved and we have no issues," concluded Reid.

13
When both teams meet in June. Burrell and his assistants are currently in Germany and Italy where they are looking to finalize kit deals...Puma and Adidas are the two likely candidates from Germany.

Not a big fan of those generic Adidas uniforms I must say.

I read that Nelson is back at Portmore, where he scored a hatrick in debut return game for PMU last night. Question, for the Trini massive (Big Magic, this is serious business, please stay away :))...was Nelson released by Joe Public? or is the league on break in T&T?

Not sure how to read into his return to Jamaica...but I believe if he continues to score heavily, he will be drafted into the national training squad...not sure if he can make the final cut over players like Fuller, King etc, but he definately could be a squad player.

Whats the general concensus on this player? Anyone care to give some insights?

All-daCosta Cup team continues Jamaica's reign.
By: Anthony Foster (Freelance Writer).
[/size]

The All-daCosta Cup team continued Jamaica's dominance over Trinidad and Tobago despite sharing the spoils against an All-schools team from the twin-island republic at Jamalco Sports Club yesterday.
In the match, which ended 1-1, Glenmuir and national Under-17 player James Thomas opened the scoring in the 23rd minute for the All-daCosta Cup team. Trinidad and Tobago equalised from the penalty spot through Elijah Manners in the 82nd minute. The All-Manning Cup boys on Monday ran away 2-1 winners and the combined results kept the Jamaican schoolboys undefeated since the reintroduction of the series in 2003.

Unsettled

In a very slow opening 20 minutes, a period which saw both teams looking unsettled, not even one shot was on target.
And it wasn't any surprise when Thomas failed to score from within the six-yard box. Though finding himself unmarked in the six-yard box, his weak shot was deflected.
However, he made up for the mistake 12 minutes later. Still, despite the brilliance of his shot, the half ended with few exciting moments.
The second half started at a much faster pace but, despite the excitement, All-daCosta Cup captain Ashton Bennett made a mess of a brilliant pass he received from midfield, firing wide of the target from inside the box.
From then on, Trinidad and Tobago took over the game and made several surges to goal but, like their opponents, they too watched all their shots ending up high or wide.
They, however, got one on target but Jerome Williams' well-directed shot was well saved.
Williams, again, three minutes later, had another shot pushed wide by the keeper.
Trinidad and Tobago's second-half dominance finally paid off in the 82nd minute when Ricardo Allen handled the ball inside the box, resulting in a penalty which saw Manners make no mistake from the spot.

Missed at close range

In the dying moments of the game, substitute Damarli Samuels should have scored the winner for the All-daCosta Cup team but he headed wide from inside the six-yard box. A minute later, teammate Draion McNain also missed from close range.
Jeffrey Hewitt, coach of the All-daCosta Cup team, said he was satisfied with the team's performance, because "we only had a couple of hours to prepare.
"We got together last night - so I think we did exceptionally well," he said.
Shawn Cooper, coach of the Trinidad and Tobago team, said it was an easy game for his boys while adding that it was unfortunate that they were returning home without the cup.
"We dominated the entire game," Cooper said. "In the first half, they had one shot, we had more ball possession but, against the run of play, they scored.
"We took over the entire game second half."
Cooper also said the All-Manning Cup team played better than its rural counterparts.

Jamaica's school boy footballers continued their dominance over their Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) countersparts as they won the two-leg Friendship Football Cup for the fourth straight year.
The home team took the tie 3-2 on aggregate following yesterday's 1-1 tie in the return leg between the All-daCosta Cup team and the T&T All-Schools team at Jamalco in Clarendon.
National age-group representative James Thomas scored first for the All-daCosta team in the 22nd minute as the Jamaicans led 1-0 at half-time.
However, Elijah Manner netted the equaliser in the 82nd minute for the T&T All Schools team.
Yestersay's result followed Monday's 2-1 victory by the All-Manning aggregation at Winchester Park in Kingston.
Jamaica have now won the trophy on all four occasions since the inception of the competition in 2003. The visitors are due to depart this afternoon at 5:00.

Boyz to face Costa Rica
Burrell confirms Ja v Costa Rica match for Feb 6
SEAN A WILLIAMS, Assistant Sports Editor
Thursday, December 13, 2007

THE Reggae Boyz will host Central American rivals Costa Rica in a football friendly on February 6 at 'The Office' at 7:00 pm.

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, who is in Japan as a disciplinary official at the FIFA Club World Cup, confirmed the date yesterday, saying "the deal is sealed... the game is definitely on".
"Yes, we have confirmed the match with Costa Rica for the next FIFA date on Wednesday, February 6, at 'The Office'," Burrell said.

Without giving details, Burrell said based on the terms of the contract, both countries must field full strength teams for the game, which will be played on the first FIFA date for 2008.
"We expect Costa Rica to be at full strength and I know the Reggae Boyz will have all their top overseas-based players available for this game," explained the CONCACAF executive member from his hotel in Tokyo.

If fit at the time, it is expected that the likes of England-based Ricardo Gardner (captain), Ricardo Fuller, Claude Davis, Damion Stewart, Donovan Ricketts, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Jermaine Johnson, Omar Daley, Marlon King, Luton Shelton, US-based Tyrone Marshall and Khari Stephenson in Sweden should figure in the Boyz line-up.

Two weeks into its tenure, the new Burrell administration quenched the thirst of local fans with two friendly internationals four days apart, which saw the Reggae Boyz defeating El Salvador (3-0) and Guatemala (2-0) in front of crowds not seen at 'The Office' in years.

Burrell, who returned to the helm of the nation's football unchallenged after incumbent Crenston Boxhill opted out of the race, said, "Of course we're expecting another bumper crowd for the Costa Rica match."

But for drooling local fans, "high quality" opposition comes at a price, and they will be asked to pay more for the Boyz's next assignment. Supporters using the bleachers will now pay $1,000, while those sitting in the Grandstand area will pay $2,500 and $3,000 for Categories One and Two, respectively - an increase of $500 in all classes.

"I don't want Jamaicans to see this as a charge, but more as their contribution to the programme... we know that we're going through harsh economic times, but if we are to host top-class international friendlies as we try to revive football in the country, it's important for us to ask for this extra contribution," Burrell appealed.

Since retaking office as JFF president on November 5, Burrell's rhetoric and sense of mission have reignited interest in the sport which, in turn, has seemingly created a nostalgic throwback to the glorious 1998 campaign when the Reggae Boyz qualified for the World Cup Finals in France.

And with the news that Brazilian Rene Simoes, who guided Jamaica to that unprecedented feat, will be the man in charge of the football programme, starting January, a ripple of hope has already started for the South Africa 2010 qualifying campaign.

"This game (against Costa Rica) will be the first that Professor Rene Simoes will be in charge of after his return (to Jamaica) early next month," Burrell said.

Both Jamaica (ranked 98 by FIFA) and Costa Rica (69) - CONCACAF competitors - will be using this game to continue their fine-tuning for next year's World Cup qualifiers.
Jamaica will kick-start their crusade, dubbed 'Back to Africa', with a Caribbean second-round tie against either The Bahamas or US Virgin Islands in June next year.

Their names catch the eye when scanning Costa Rica's Gold Cup roster, but could easily pop up in any Kingston directory.

Their English accents could smoothly mingle from Morant Point to Montego Bay.

HaroldWallace, Jervis Drummond and Dexter Lewis stand out in a Spanish-flavoured football squad dominated by names such as Centeno, Nunez, Fonseca, Barrantos, Azofeifa and Saborio. And although the trio pledge their undying unity with the Central American team, which advanced to the quarter-final round of the CONCACAF tournament following a 1-0 win over Guadeloupe on Monday night at the Orange Bowl here, the descendants of migrant Jamaicans still embrace their island ties.

"When we grow, from small, (our elders) teach us to talk English, Jamaican English," said 30-year-old Drummond, who has represented Costa Rica since 1995.

"We eat green banana, all a dem ting deh. So all of that come from Jamaica. The reggae music and all that, it was all the same (to us)."

Decades ago, the grandfathers of Drummond and Wallace, and Lewis' great grandfather, moved to Costa Rica from Jamaica in search of better living conditions. The trio's own opportunities have come on the playing field. Drummond and Wallace, each with well over 50 international caps, are starting defenders for 'The Ticos' at the Gold Cup. Lewis is a reserve goalkeeper. All admit following Jamaica's football fortunes and were alarmed the Reggae Boyz did not qualify for the 12-team tournament in the United States.

"I don't know why Jamaica is not here," said Wallace, 31, who like Drummond were members of Costa Rica's squads to the World Cup finals in 2002 and 2006. "They have very good players."

Walter boyd

Drummond also admires Jamaica's players and particularly remembers ex-national Walter Boyd, "the number 10," whom he described as highly skilful. However, he was quick to add that the Reggae Boyz may need more than individual talent to succeed in the future.

"They have to play in group," he explained. "You just can't play for one man, you understand. So I consider (Jamaica) has good players, but you have to work for (success)."

Wallace, Drummond and Lewis are not the only Costa Ricans with Jamaican roots who have played for 'The Ticos'. A Costa Rican journalist at the Gold Cup estimated that about "60 per cent" of 'The Ticos' squad come from two cities, Limon and Puntarenas, although many moved to richer clubs in San José, the country's capital and largest city.

Descendants of Jamaicans make up a significant portion of the population of Limon and Puntarenas. Many speak English and have earned wealth.

Quarter-final round

"They own the seafood companies and tourism companies," said the journalist.

Now Costa Rica is focusing on the Gold Cup's quarter-final round, which begins this weekend. As Group A runners-up they will face the runners-up from Group C, which includes traditional football power Mexico, Panama, Honduras and Cuba. Yet 'The Ticos' insist they can claim the top prize.

"We're looking to win the championships," Drummond said. "...(If) you just come and play and don't look for the championships, it's better you don't play football."

Part of being a 'tico' is staying laid-back, similar to the 'no problem' attitude of many Jamaicans. But there's more urgency now in Costa Rica's approach.

'The Ticos' - who have made it to the finals of three World Cups - understand that no team can rest on past accomplishments. Others are catching up - fast.

Asked if he was surprised Jamaica did not qualify for the Gold Cup, Lewis said bluntly: "Well, really, yes. But I see Guadeloupe and Haiti playing very good football... So everybody is getting sharper now."

With World Cup qualifiers due early next year, it's a lesson the Boyz could learn from their distant cousins in Central America.

I would rather see Jamaica or T&T advance at Canada's expense. Lets look sat the different scenarios:

Jamaica and T&T play to a tie = Jamaica, T&T, Canada end on 4 points each..Canada advance
Jamaica beat T&T = Jamaica advance
T&T beat Jamaica = T&T advance

It simply means that a tie is not an option.
