There seems to be some debate over whether this was an A international.  I don't believe this was a strong squad for Norway, and if it wasn't an A international, I believe he is not cap tied to the USA.

We are all hoping for a major upset in this stage of qualifying, but I don't see any of the favoured teams stumbling.

St Vincent will feel the Heat when they play Canada.

The one major surprise was the inclusion of Ugo Ihemelu, who had been formerly capped by the USA.  Lot's of questions around his eligibility.

Otherwise a strong roster for Canada:

De Guzman is the first Canadian to ever play in the top flight of the Spanish league, and helped Deportivo to a ninth-place finish in 2007/08.

Canada refuses to take back seat

Brazil 3 Canada 2. Robinho's genius, defensive gaffe decide entertaining friendly
Jim Jamieson, The Province
Published: Sunday, June 01, 2008

Brazil might have been missing superstars Ronaldinho, Kaka and Alexandre Pato, but they still had enough offensive firepower to edge a Canadian squad ranked 62nd in the world that nonetheless refused to take a step back Saturday night.
Sparked by the genius of Robinho -- one of the top forwards in the world -- FIFA No. 2-ranked Brazil took a 3-2 decision over Canada in a highly entertaining international friendly before a crowd of 47,052 mostly yellow-clad Brazil fans at Qwest Field.
Robinho, who plays for Spain's Sevilla FC, set up two of Brazil's goals and scored what stood up as the winner in the 63rd minute. He intercepted a poorly timed back pass from Canada midfielder Julian de Guzman and was able to run in alone to deke goalkeeper Pat Onstad and score into the wide open goal.
It was a tough break for de Guzman, who arguably had been Canada's best player to that point in the game and had tied the tilt at 2-2 just seven minutes earlier on a 23-yard thunderbolt.
"I felt very down," said de Guzman, who plays for Spain's Deportivo La Coruna. "We had the momentum and let it get away from us. We could have come away with a win."
It was also a tough result for Canada, which had enough chances in the first half to be up a goal or two on Brazil when the score was tied 1-1.
Canada's head coach Dale Mitchell took the game as a positive -- considering that Brazil fielded a strong squad and is also getting ready for qualifying in mid-June.
"I'm pleased with the way we played," said Mitchell. "We played with a team that is world class. We could have got down after they scored in the fourth minute, but we didn't let down."
Mitchell said de Guzman's gaffe shouldn't mar an otherwise excellent performance.
"He scored a good goal and a mistake like that can happen to anybody," said Mitchell. "He's a terrific kid. He's played against many of those players in Europe."
After a confident start to the game, the Brazilians struck early to open scoring in the fourth minute when Diego finished off a brilliant set-up by Robinho at the left side of the Canadian box.
Robinho completely undressed Canada's right fullback Paul Stalteri before feeding a deft pass to Diego, who punched a 12-yard shot past the outstretched fingers of Onstad and just inside the right post.
But Canada gathered themselves and tied the score just seven minutes later, when forward Rob Friend of Kelowna beat Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar to a long cross from Mike Klukowski and headed it into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Canada, its confidence on the rise, had some glorious chances to take the lead.
The best was a clear breakaway from about 40 yards out for Issey Nakajima-Faran in the 24th minute, but the midfielder's attempted lob over Cesar went wide to the right.
De Guzman also had a great chance from 22 yards in the 32nd minute, forcing Cesar to make a good save.
After the two teams exchanged close chances, the Brazilians took the lead just before the half when Luis Fabiano put a point blank header -- the pass came from Robinho -- through Onstad, who made initial contact but couldn't stop the ball from dropping over the goal line.
"Canada did not surprise us," said Brazil head coach Dunga.
"They are a disciplined team. They have two or three plays they execute well and they scored on one of them."
Dunga said he wasn't surprised by Robinho's exhibition of skill.

"He always plays with emotion and his happiness affects his teammates," he said.
Canada moves on to Ft. Lauderdale, where it will take on Panama in another friendly on Wednesday. That will be the Canadians' final tune-up before a two-game series with St. Vincent and the Grenadines June 15 at Kingstown, St. Vincent, and in Montreal on June 20. It's the start of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
The Canada/Brazil match will be broadcast at 10 a.m. this morning on Rogers Sportsnet.

By MLS standards, Samuel was making big bucks, I believe in the range of $165,000 base salary.

He simply did not produce and was given more than ample opportunity.

When half the team boycotts and stops playing for T&T, I don't think you can say that.
Please stick to Canadian football. Your credibility on anything else just dropped 100% with that statement.

Did not a number of T&T players boycott the national team over the antics of the federation ?

Everybody was available kakahole!!

Stay outta we business nah... yuh ent know what yuh talking bout!

How could everyone be available, when players were boycotting.  Dwight Yorke has boycotted the team more times in his career than Canada scored in 2007 !

Unlike T&T, we keep the politics to the boardroom and the football on the field.   The players play for Canada, not the CSA.

I believe it is the same for us in that regard.

TALLINN, Estonia - Estonia defeated Canada 2-0 in a men's soccer friendly on a snow-covered pitch at Lillekula Stadium on Wednesday.

Estonia got on the board in the 60th minute on a Paul Stalteri own goal. The veteran defender was hit in the chest with a cross and the ball went in over the head of goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld.

Estonia sealed the victory with a goal in the 88th minute.

"The first goal comes on a counterattack and the second goal comes when we're pushing to get the equalizer," said Canada head coach Dale Mitchell. "I think we were the team that carried the play for good parts of the match.

"But away from home, if you play against players who have some pace and some ability up front which almost all teams in Europe have, when you give it away they can make you pay for it. And that was really the difference in the game."

Work crews did their best to clear the field of snow before the game and at halftime but players still had to deal with cold, slippery conditions.

"Our guys got on with it with a good attitude," Mitchell said. "At times maybe we overplayed a little bit too much and it didn't really suit the style of the team that we have right now.

"But it still ends up being a worthwhile exercise to be over here, to be with the players for three days, and make the most of a competitive international."

Estonia defeated Canada 2-1 in a friendly at their only previous meeting in 2003.

Canada is preparing for its first game in the CONCACAF World Cup qualification, which is scheduled for June 15 at Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.

Technical director Stephen Hart aims to improve country's soccer programs

Stephen Hart's first course of action as the Canadian Soccer Association's new technical director is to tour the country, meet with various coaches and officials, and find out what their various needs are.
The native of Trinidad and Tobago has coached Canada's national development, youth and senior teams and takes over responsibility for grooming players 20 and under with no shortage of ideas of what needs to be done to improve the calibre of talent in the pipeline.
What he doesn't want to do is force feed a one-size-fits-all plan to provincial associations whose priorities can be as divergent as the country is big.
"Right now we've got to put some sort of structure in place that is agreed upon by all parties and then slowly start building upon that," Hart said Thursday during a conference call announcing his appointment.
"There was some good work done by (former national men's team coach) Holger Osieck in the past and he came with some ideas, albeit he wasn't here that long. With the lack of an infrastructure, he probably found it difficult to work in because of the size of the country and basically everybody doing their own little thing.
"Let's be honest, what may be a necessity for Newfoundland that's probably under ice for eight months of the year may not be the same for Vancouver. So yes, you have a general plan of approach, but it's also got to be flexible and workable in all the provinces."
That outlook should help the 48-year-old Hart unite the notoriously fractious provincial associations under a series of priorities he would like them to embrace. So should his resume, as the former T&T international and technical director for Nova Scotia Soccer has experience at all levels of the game, and will continue in his role as assistant coach with the national men's team.
He also earned high praise from players when he served as interim coach of the men's team during the CONCACAF Gold Cup last summer, when Canada lost in the semifinals.
"It was a unanimous decision by the search committee to choose Stephen Hart," said acting CSA president and board chair Dominic Maestracci, who added that there were 15 applications, six from outside Canada, for the job.
One of Hart's priorities as technical director is for more emphasis on ensuring young players come up the ranks with improved technical skills. Another is having more uniform coaching practises across the country.
The ultimate idea is to have a system that focuses more on individual player development at younger ages so those who advance to the elite levels of the game arrive with more a refined skill-set.
"Every coach knows that in order to be successful or have good teams you need technical players," said Hart. "Technically we have to improve and in order to do that, we have to target the players at younger ages, their technique, their co-ordination and make sure we have the more technical-oriented coaches working right through the system."
Hart says many Canadian coaches have talked to him about team building and, while he feels that's important, he believes the development of players needs to be the ultimate goal. He points to the national under-17 team that played in the World Cup in 1995 as an example of his rationale.
"Today only one player from that squad is playing at a professional level and is eligible for our World Cup team selection," Hart said. "So that might have been a good team, (but) individual-wise we really gained very little from it.
"The present under-23 team has eight graduates from the under-17 program. It would have had more had the clubs agreed, and we have some 17 players in professional environments in Europe alone from the under-17 programs of the past. So you've got to weigh if that's more successful than actually going to a competition and winning a couple of games."
In world soccer, Hart points out, clubs are responsible for producing players while the national associations lay down guidelines, train coaches and run the national teams. Without a national league in Canada, other methods have to be found to groom elite players, a point he plans to stress during his meetings with soccer officials across the country.
"In the past I've had a pretty good working relationship with almost everyone and now that I'm in this position that might change," he said. "We are all supposed to be working toward the eventual production of players to play at the highest level and at the grass-roots level."
While Hart's responsibility rests with developing young players, he understands that his work will ultimately affect the talent pool for the men's national team and efforts to qualify for the World Cup. That's why he wants to focus on the technical skill of players rather than team systems.
"Our priority is to create a sort of soccer education to develop as well-rounded a player as possible," he said. "Whatever style the senior national team coach wants to play, then they should have as big a base as possible to select from of players that know how to play."

HART OF THE MATTER

Congratulations to Stephen Hart. However, the new technical director for the Canadian Soccer Association faces a monumental task.

I've known Stephen for a while and figure he's a guy with the right temperament for a position that would have most people pulling out their hair or chewing a finger off.

The frustration level will be that severe.

But Hart is always on an even keel, never too high, never too low. He's a thoughtful sort who we all hope finds a way to help dig the CSA out of the hole in which they find themselves.

Hart told me that after 17 years with the CSA, he knows the politics, the regional agendas, and what's required to build up the various programs. What's required however is money, and Hart does not have the key to the bank.

Besides, the vault is nearly empty anyway. He says he must find alternative ways to build up the programs at the developmental levels. Stability, he says, is the key issue. He also says there will be more announcements made towards the end of the month. Let's hope it’s the beginning of a rebirth.

Canada announces roster for friendly with Estonia

March 18, 2008

Canada's men's national team announced the roster today for their international friendly match with Estonia. The Canadian players will start to arrive Sunday, a few days before their 26 March match on Wednesday in Tallinn. This will be Canada's senior team's second international match of the year.

"It has been good to see the that most of our European based players have been getting a game each weekend with their professional clubs during the winter," says coach Dale Mitchell. "This international date is a prime opportunity to get them together as a group. We will need to organize ourselves quickly on Monday and Tuesday before facing a very competitive Estonia team on Wednesday evening."

Canada has selected 19 players for this friendly match, almost all of which play professionally in Europe. Dwayne De Rosario of the Houston Dynamo is the only player based in North America making the trip overseas.

Paul Stalteri has the most appearances of any Canadian player on this team (62) while Marcel de Jong has the least (one).

Canada will be facing Estonia for the second time in its history. Five years ago, Canada lost a 1:2 friendly match in Tallinn on 29 March 2003. In 2007, Canada posted a record of four wins, three draws and three losses, its best record since 2000.

Mitchell is currently preparing for the upcoming run to the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. While CONCACAF’s first phase of 2010 World Cup Qualification began in February, Canada will wait until the second phase to play their first two games against Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.

It should be Canada (we even gave them our W.C. uniforms to use) but after peggy and his friends talk so much shit about us on their forum and on big soccer.com it is  real hard to keep them as my second team.

Cheer for Haiti.  They need the support and we don't need half-ass fans.
