The role of assistant coach is too important for any head coach to have one assigned to him before he is appointed. LOYALTY! AND SUPPORT for the head coach's vision is critical to the success of the program. Unless they already decide on the head coach and he has agreed to have RL as his assistant then you looking for same trouble...different day!

Tempo/Coops: I wasn't suggesting that the association is not necessary nor should exclude any coaches who could not afford a more significant fee (which does not have to be equal to $75 US)...I was thinking more in terms of what recourses is necessary from the outset to get an association off the ground properly.
The NSCAA also has a promotional strategy to increase their membership (It's called Share The Membership- which give new members free membership for a year if they are referred by an existing member). Just to be clear, I'm concerned that the $1 introductory fee might cause some to take the establishment of the coaches association for granted. No argument from me as I've talked with Lincoln in Baltimore and support this venture fully.

I was speaking to Lincoln Phillips yesterday. He said initial membership fee is $1 (TT). There will be an interim board. Once they have a fair number of coaches registered, elections will take place and a proper membership fee will be agreed. He said when he joined NSCAA there were around 200 coaches, now membership is 72,000 and its the largest coaches association in the world. He also formed a black coaches committee.

Lincoln has high hopes, but he never over estimates the Trini mentality! He knows there will be many critics and not all coaches will join. But he hopes if he can get enough groundswell going, a coach will be disadvantaged if he doesn't join.

Really hope this takes off, as its needed just as much as a players association.
I'd like to suggest that if the coaches association is to be taken seriously, then that $1 initial membership fee is a joke. The NSCAA IS $75. per year and the membership is actually more like 35,000 (not 72,000) but yes they are the world's largest coaching organization. The NSCAA/ Black Soccer Coaches Committee has a membership of 500 plus black coaches from around the world.  Membership fees does two things from the onset, provides a budget for administration and operations of the association and supports the programs that provide benifits to the associations members. I have been a member of the NSCAA for almost 15 years and when my renewal notice comes in the mail I don't even think twice about renewing because of the tremendous value I have derived from being a participating member of the NSCAA. I believe that this would be a great move for coaches in T&T.

Does this mean that RL will be able to stay at home and still get his full certification?  8)

RL would be better off going to do his EUFA badge. With his professional playing experience he could start at a higher level course than what they will be offering. For professional development purposes he'd be better off putting himself among other post professional players who are making the transition from playing to coaching. This could also give him more possible options to get on board with a pro club in Europe, that's where he would cover more ground in his development as a coach.
Look at the scenario developing... six local coaches are being trained over 3 days to become instructors, then they start 2 days later to teach the C course. There is a real learning curve and difference between coaching players and coaching coaches. I wonder where LP is in this process?

The main observation I made was pertaining to the "technical quality" for the national team level and not necessarily the drills (players at this level should not even be doing drills anyway). I"m getting the impression that the technical ability is at an acceptable standard for national level players. Maybe I should have just watched the video and stupesssss.

Why should they not be doing drills? I have seen Holland & Guus Hiddink Australia do the same drill. Interested to hear your explaination!
I've seen and used many of these types of training exercies as well. Drills are an antiquated methodology that was used to develop or reinforce technical aspects; modern player development involves game-like sessions where the training is realistic and relavant although the focus is on technical aspects. I'm certain that what you saw Holland doing was no drill nor the "technical quality" look anything like that video...My focal point again was not the training exercise/drill, but the poor "technical quality" on display for a NATIONAL TEAM and it should not be put out for public viewing.
We can let this rest now, because "IT WAS NOT SUCH A BAD YEAR". i wonder what year that bottle of wine was they drinking in Trini :beermug:

Let us give the coach credit for seeing a weakness of TNT football at all levels and at least working on it, this drill if YOU would understand calls for a  lot of concentration not just passing.I can call the whole national senior team including the overseas players that cannot pass the football, and even some of you who tried to make a national team in your time did not make. This is a reflection of our lack of proper development,So why pressure the kids when WE RAN away and now pelting stones for a claim to FAME.They played in a World Cup with heart and soul.
With all due respect no one is pelting stones for a claim to fame. All I ask is why post that video? I does not reflect well for the coach nor the players. Look at Ragga's post and you will understand the points of concern that some of us have expressed. Look at Elan's post and you will understand that comment pertains to the organization of the shooting drill;it's not realistic nor applicable for players at this level. If this is the way players are being trained, they are being trained to get licks. What is the standard of expectation ???-

I should have picked up from your first response where this would go. No one claimed to be an expert but just expressed an opinion based on observations (football is a game of opinions) from the video with a specific emphasis on the technical quality of the exercises. What does that have to do with whether men have badge or take courses or coach teams. Every response was based on observations and a standard of expectation for a national team...that's not passing judgement. What if the person posting is a professional scout; coach; clinician; course lecturer etc. who has a trained eye and professional experience in these things. It seems to me that you are the one who is judging without all the facts. Now , you tell us if you think the technical quality displayed in the exercises is at an acceptable standard for a national team?

BS...you really think men can't make an assessment from these clips...please!!! You must have no clue as to the level of football and football compentencies some people on this board are exposed to. Again...this is a poor standard for a U-20 NATIONAL TEAM >:(

Pardner everybody have internet the whole world exposed :rotfl: context is everything,if zidane playing with some children and it have a clip where a little boy hit him a beat and he fall down is the little boy better than him? no more than likely he playing around, you aint ask if this was after a game if they were just doing a light drill because it aint have all the players you aint ask nothing you just ride in on yuh competent horse and start to judge ,cool out and form opinions after u get all the facts
If you think I'm referring to exposure through internet then I see that this discussion is beyond your ability to look at the clips and see what I mean by technical quality. Even if this was a light session at the end of training...I don't see any of the players dripping wet with sweat...the technical quality is still poor!!!

Good post, this drill needs lots of practice,if they have now started it will look that way,no hard feelings.
We talking about the quality of the passing (technique)...this exercise requires the players to play passes within a range of 5-8 yards...come on man...what you mean by " if they have just started it will look that way"
just started the exercise or just started to learn to pass ??? This is a U-20 National team you looking at...I know 10 year old kids who could execute this exercise with they eyes closed and still have better quality.
I eh saying no more, if this good enough for you then " no hard feelings"

Football / Re: Hislop says hold on to Latapy
« on: December 10, 2010, 01:32:00 PM »
I too have voiced my opinion in the earlies about Latas inexperience and the unreasonable expectation of any coach to get certain results at the top level. I've been reflecting on this issue and conclude that our expectations were over the top. Successful coaches at the top level have all been schooled in the form of coaching education theory and practice. Very few have been able to make a smooth transition from the playing field to coaching...many have failed along the way.
Here is my position based on experience....no coach is successful based solely on his coaching knowledge nor playing ability only.
Further, there is so much that goes into winning on a regular basis-:
1. The administration /support system for a comprehensive program at all levels of the game is necessary.
2. Coaching education with an established minimum standards/requirements is necessary.
3. Proper funding/revenue sources to support the necessary programs is a must.
4. A well structered plan to address immediate; short and long term needs for the sport at all levels is an absolute necessity.
5. Player development plan that is tied to coaches development is a must.
6. Access to the best/inform players and meaningful preparation program including competitive opponents is a must.
The list is only scratching the surface of all the ingredients that are necessary for the results we expect from all of our teams. National team coaches should not have to go without being paid nor should the players; national team coaches should not have to beg the clubs to send the players to training sessions; national tean coaches should not have to struggle for anything that he needs ...preparation games; access to trainiing facilites etc.
I wonder if we expecting a local coach to " make chicken salad out of chicken shit" as my college coach would say. The foreign coaches have not had to deal with this rubbish...I'm still not saying that Latas could coach or not; nor am I suggesting that he as an inexperienced coach should be given the even more important job of training younger players.  Richard Chinapoo, Kendall Walkes and a number of Trinbago coaches with years of coaching education and experience under their belts should be on a list for consideration...a lot of these coaches could help mentor a rookie like Latas.

I think Shaka right. It does not strike me as Latas being ah Trainer or technician. It seems he need to learn to implement proper tactics and learn how to adjust those tactics in the game. He need to do he USSF B and A license or his NSCAA Advanced National and then His Premier. The Premier might be what he really need.

Prerequisites: NSCAA Advanced National Diploma or USSF "A" License or English UEFA "A" License

Note: Applicants must apply for the premier diploma and acceptance is not guaranteed.
The Premier Diploma is the pinnacle of the Residential Academy offerings. It is a 50-hour course designed to teach advanced methodology with full-sided soccer (11 v. 11) as its focal point.

Coaches are provided a course curriculum. The course content includes a thorough examination of different systems of play, including: technical and tactical implications; 11 v. 11 topics, including coaching in the game, phase play and shadow play; nutrition; sportsmanship/ethics; and a leadership component including team management, personal development and the coach's role in game development in his/her community.

Eligibility for the Premier Diploma requires the applicant be an NSCAA member and have the Advanced National Diploma, the USSF “A” License or English UEFA "A" License.  Candidates with a "Distinguished Pass" in the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma will automatically qualify for entrance into the Premier Diploma.  Additional factors, such as coaching and playing background, community leadership and contribution to the game, are considered. Applications are screened by the Director of Coaching and enrollment is limited for each course.

I could pull some strings to get him accepted to the next course they offering in January in Florida.

Football / Re: Training and fitness level. Can this work for TT teams?
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:32:17 PM »
I think unlimited subs would be counter productive to this training methodology, especially since this is not done at the higher levels of the game. Players have to be trained to meet the demands of the game and the ability of the players to play with intencity for the duration of the game is relative to meeting the demands of the game. I read an article written about a study of young MLS players struggling to compete because they were conditioned to play for short periods with their youth clubs and college programs due to unlimited subs.
South Korea in the past world cups were certainly an example of the results of the training approach...the longer the game went on the more intense they played, while maintaining their technical ability...which tends to decline as fatigue increases.

Football / Re: Training and fitness level. Can this work for TT teams?
« on: December 09, 2010, 10:00:50 AM »
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to participate in a discussion/lecture presentation by Verheijen and he actually shared several ways this type of training was incorperated in training sessions; not separate and apart from the playing but inclusive in small sided games. The concept behind the training methodology is that " football has traditionally been viewed as an endurance sport, hense the old approach to fitness preparation by training over distance and time...(Coopers Test etc.); however, within this approach "football is understood as an intensity sport and the training should be reflective of those types of activities relative to the demands of the game"
As posted earlier, it is no coincidence that almost all the foreign coaches including those on this board, always question the fitness level of the T&T players. The real issue in this shortcoming in T&T may lie in lack of intensity in the training environment. Pellerud for example made that the focus of the U-17 girls program. I would even venture to say from this perspective that Beenie also did the same thing and AC picked that up from Beenie and took it to the U-17 boys.

Yes, it appears that Mario was indeed a late bloomer. I talking about when he was at West Virginia Weslyan with Thomasos. They won national championship with their school. I still say the 2 ah them was good enough to at least play Shell cup. I saw Moreno from Tranquil and yes he was a very good player. He went to Farleigh Dickinson for 1 year and then returned to TT. Then I saw him playing with P'boro in the QPS. He still had all the skills but was now mellow. He hair cut short. I almost did not make him out. If he had the desire and really wanted it, I have no doubt he probably would have made it.
Agreed...Mario was a late bloomer once he decided to come out of the goal he developed very quickly into a very talented player and blossomed even more when he went to WVW. Harrison was quick but no where as talented as Thomasos...that is certainly one of the finest talents to come out of T&T. We lost a whole generation of talented players through migration...soccer scholarships was like going pro back in the 80's.

Is this Franklyn Simpson aka Nat who use to play for Peterboro and then went to play with Paragon for a little while? Coops????
Yes,He also coached Peterboro later on with Chicken as their manager,he was a good friend of mine always giving each other chat.
The last time i met him was when i went to Grenada some years ago as Coach with our national team to play in the Shell Cup,i was surprise to see he was living there and involved in Football big time. The tough part was we were beaten only for the Strike squad to reverse that in the finals and give us the first ever Shell Cup. From that time i look at these island teams differently, they have nothing to loose and they going to hurt you, when they beat teams like T&T is like they win the WC,nothing they do doh surprise me we does undersate those teams too much.

Nat also coached and helped develop many of the top youths who played for Peterborough and John D (he was the assistant at JD for many years). He's a serious disciplinarian and sound technical and tactical teacher of the game.

It's sad she never graduated from college. Hope she makes the best of this.

She can always go to college on her own or get some grant to do so. Was she in college and never finished?

She went to Young Harris College for at least two years.
There is nothing wrong with the fact that Miss Cordner is putting her schooling on hold. The female professional is a different ball of wax compared to the mens. I see nothing wrong with playing professionally now and then going back and finishing off school. If its is feasible as far as her schedule goes online courses are an option. maybe she does not know what she wants to do in school (life) and is seizing the opportunity (again nothing wrong that) .. heck I am 47 and still have no idea what i want to do....lmfao... Anyways Miss Cordner (aka  Ya Ya), do yourself and all of your mates proud as we all are routing for your success.

Cheers  19
The truth is that this is the best option for her because she was academically inepth ...under prepared for college and although she spent 2 years there she could not go on to a 4 year school because of her grades and lack of credits to transfer...(there were a lot of colleges interested in her after she finished her eligibility at YHC). This is a serious issue and the people who handling these players need to have a better plan in place to make sure that these players are prepared to handle the academic demands of college.
(19...this is not a put down on the player nor an attempt to discredit her , but I won't be eloquent about such a serious matter)

Of all the positions on the field no coach can compromise having too many inexperience in midfield; Latas having mostly inexperience players in midfield is either into wishful thinking or doesn't the difference between the two. This is the engine room, can‘t compromise there.  This statement also indicates the inexperience of the coach. Remember what he said after the second Jamaica game? " We had trouble adjusting defensively in the midfield...Jamacia played in a 3-5-2 and we usually play against teams who play in a 4-4-2..." Experienced coaches know that whenever you have a 4-4-2 vs 3-5-2 you will always have problems in the midfield because you are outnumbered. There is also an indication that the team was not prepared to deal with any other tactical approach by the opponent, which seems to be the case in every game where we are playing against teams with competent players and coaches. If the coach cannot present a clear tactical plan with defined responsibilities for each of the players and their units and without a decisive approach to attacking and defending scenarios as a team...you asking your players to just play football and that's not good enough.
Further, when I hear that players performance attitude is lackluster I have to think about their motivation...I really wonder how motivated these players are for the following reasons...
1. Have they been paid for their services from the previous set of games...if players did not get paid after playing in a World Cup...what is the likelyhood of me getting paid for Caribbean qulifying games????
2. If the coach is trying to use predominantly inexperienced players for this stage of qualifying...where do I stand once we qualify????
3. If the coach is not presenting us with a clear tactical plan and has not provided a long therm strategy towards building a competitive team...how much confidnce do the players have in the coach????

Fans stormed the field (CIC Ground) and mas start; the overtime could not be played so the game was rescheduled for the Oval. This was game 2 of the trilogy... JD won the first game 2-0 in the Oval, but Fatima protested that the ref played 45 minutes in the first half instead of 40 and JD scored somewhere  between the 40-45 min mark. CK 1 you hit the nail on the head my friend and you are right I should not have to be eloquant however I choose to be. Just to let you know I am supporter of the National program and the players and staffers who toil with-in it. Politics are always going to be involved as you and I both know. However I will say this that there is always "three" sides to every story and the truth is somewhere in between. So when players and or parents complain about issues at hand just remember that we only have one side of the story... You know what really disapoints me about all the support that everyone is talking about on-line is that not one SW.NET supporter and or family member of a player other than my wife and I showed up to give our support to the team and its management staff for this tournament.
Talk the talk however walk the walk my friends ....

No..I am trying to be as eloquant and positive as possible to these young ladies who have put in the sacrifice with-in this program.  As to your comments about women playing a physical game like men do. I think you all are aware of the difference in genetic dictates the difference however trust me those who are truly familiar with the type of physical game that women play it is 100% dirtier than the mens game will ever be.
Nyman 18 what does the 90's football with the countries you have metioned compared to football today in respects to the womens game.Just so I understand your thought process?

happy friday peeps....
I somehow get a sence that you are a supporter of the players and their efforts because you appear to be close to the program...hense the reason for your eloquence. However, we should not have to praise players for effort and sacrifice at the NATIONAL LEVEL. This should be expected from anyone who desires to don a national team shirt...eloquence is another way of accepting what you don't really want to accept. We expect more from the perspective of development of the players in all aspects of the game. I don't believe anyone on this board is critical of the players efforts or sacrifices especially for the ones who were left out at the last minute to include players who should not even be in either of those teams.

Palos ...are you therefore suggesting that we move on from Pellurud ? or should we continue ?

Continue of course.

We only NOW beginning to LEARN how to creep

When we ready to walk...then move on.  Maybe in a couple years.
It does not make sence to creep the wrong way and have to start creeping again after you start walking. This is what the US is struggling with in the women's game and Canada had to make the same changes from kick and run and relying solely on the athleticism of the players, both programs are now learning how to play the game. Someone in another post ask if we expect Barcelona football...YES...because that is football in the simplest form and it can be taught to little kids. If you noticed how Mexico and Brazil for example and even Germany have developed their programs in such a short time...the players have been taught how to play while their physical qualities were also being developed. my point is this: every coach has a philosophy and they live or die by it, however, having worked with many players and coaches for over 20 years, you have to be able to teach players how to play the game both technically and tactically in order to have measured improvement and sustained standards of play and results. We have had many of our players attend US schools but that has not been capatalised on. When they go to school here, they learn how to train hard, lift weights, time management, personal accountability, comptitiveness, technical and tactical functional aspects of the game etc.  and that should be used to help the local coaches move the program along.
What has really happened here is that the local coaches have bought hook line and sinker into another man's philosophy...neither Shabazz nor Charles believe in kick and run football...I know because I've played with them and Charles love to "leh we jook it nah !!!" Both the U-17 and Senior teams suffered the same fate...while there was an obvious physical presence and determination, they were smply out played by teams with equal physical attributes but better football playing qualities. Our teams appeared to look improved because of the physical effort, however the technical , tactical and functional abilities were avarage at best. In two years players should be much more proficient at the most fundamental of technical skills...passing!

Sooo...the TTFF is promise salaries based on their submitted budget before approval from the government. So this is why in the past Jack would turn around and blame the government for no money. See how it becomes clear?

In one breath, Anil saying that Latas being paid "the big bucks" to get these results. Then in the next sentence, he saying the budget not approved and is all inclusive of salaries and development but he know the governemtn will not be able to cover 100%.
This leads me to wonder if the TTFF is now a government agency. Are the coaches and players now government employees? What does the government gain by pumping all this money to the TTFF et al? Who gets the revenue from the games that are hosted...the government or the TTFF ???
