WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain wants a presidential pardon for Jack Johnson, who became the nation's first black heavyweight boxing champion 100 years before Barack Obama became its first black president.

McCain feels Johnson was wronged by a 1913 conviction of violating the Mann Act by having a consensual relationship with a white woman — a conviction widely seen as racially motivated.

"I've been a very big fight fan, I was a mediocre boxer myself," McCain, R-Ariz., said in a telephone interview. "I had admired Jack Johnson's prowess in the ring. And the more I found out about him, the more I thought a grave injustice was done."

On Wednesday, McCain will join Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., filmmaker Ken Burns and Johnson's great niece, Linda Haywood, at a Capitol Hill news conference to unveil a resolution urging a presidential pardon for Johnson. Similar legislation offered in 2004 and last year failed to pass both chambers of Congress.

King, a recreational boxer, said a pardon would "remove a cloud that's been over the American sporting scene ever since (Johnson) was convicted on these trumped-up charges."

"I think the moment is now," King said.

Presidential pardons for the dead are rare.

In 1999, President Bill Clinton pardoned Lt. Henry O. Flipper, the Army's first black commissioned officer, who was drummed out of the military in 1882 after white officers accused him of embezzling $3,800 in commissary funds. Last year, President George W. Bush pardoned Charles Winters, who was convicted of violating the Neutrality Act when he conspired in 1948 to export aircraft to a foreign country in aid of Israel.

The Justice Department and the White House declined to comment on this latest Johnson pardon effort.

However, the idea has a passionate supporter in McCain, who has repeatedly said he was wrong in 1983 when he voted against a federal holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

"It's just one of those things that you don't want to quit until you see justice," McCain said of Johnson's case. "We won't quit until we win. And I believe that enough members, if you show them the merits of this issues, that we'll get the kind of support we need."

Johnson won the world heavyweight title on Dec. 26, 1908, after police in Australia stopped his 14-round match against the severely battered Canadian world champion, Tommy Burns. That led to a search for a "Great White Hope" who could beat Johnson. Two years later, the American world titleholder Johnson had tried for years to fight, Jim Jeffries, came out of retirement but lost in a match called "The Battle of the Century," resulting in deadly riots.

Johnson lost the heavyweight title to Jess Willard in 1915.

In 1913, Johnson was convicted of violating the Mann Act, which outlawed transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes. The law has since been heavily amended, but has not been repealed.

Authorities first targeted Johnson's relationship with a white woman who later became his wife, then found another white woman to testify against him. Johnson fled the country after his conviction, but agreed years later to return and serve a 10-month jail sentence. He tried to renew his boxing career after leaving prison, but failed to regain his title. He died in a car crash in 1946 at age 68.

"When we couldn't beat him in the ring, the white power establishment decided to beat him in the courts," Burns told the AP in a telephone interview. Burns' 2005 documentary, "Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson," examined Johnson's case and the sentencing judge's admitted desire to "send a message" to black men about relationships with white women.

Both McCain and King said a pardon, particularly one from Obama, would carry important symbolism.

"It would be indicative of the distance we've come, and also indicative of the distance we still have to go," McCain said.

Burns, however, sees a pardon more as "just a question of justice, which is not only blind, but color blind," adding, "And I think it absolutely does not have anything to do with the symbolism of an African-American president pardoning an African-American unjustly accused."

Burns helped form the Committee to Pardon Jack Johnson, which filed a petition with the Justice Department in 2004 that was never acted on. Burns said he spoke about the petition a couple of times with Bush, who as governor of Johnson's home state of Texas proclaimed Johnson's birthday as "Jack Johnson Day" for five straight years.

Bush gave Burns a phone number which led to adviser Karl Rove, Burns said, but Rove told him a pardon "ain't gonna fly."

Rove doesn't recall any such conversation with Burns, his spokeswoman Sheena Tahilramani said, and "if he had been approached, he wouldn't have offered an opinion."

World Cup Qualifying Preview: Brazil - Peru
After yet another disappointing qualifying game at the weekend, five-time world champions Brazil will be hoping for a massive improvement when they take on minnows Peru.
Mar 31, 2009 9:43:34 AM
Kick-off: Wednesday, 1 April 2009, 22:10 local time – Estadio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre, Brazil

Back Down To Earth

Brazil looked to have rediscovered some of their old attacking majesty following their impressive wins over Portugal and Italy in their last two international friendlies. But they were given a harsh reality check in the tough environment of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers at the weekend when they struggled dreadfully against Ecuador.

Playing at about 9, 350 feet above sea level, Dunga’s men huffed, puffed and floundered. Indeed, they were extremely lucky to return to normal elevation with a point in the bag after they were outplayed for the entirety of the game in Quito.

They did, however, score their very first goal in Ecuador in a World Cup qualifying match but the solitary point, precious as it was, wasn’t enough to stop them sliding down from second to fourth spot in the standings after direct rivals Argentina and Chile both won.

The Selecao will be relieved to return to the comforts of their own home - 33 feet above sea level - when they entertain rock-bottom Peru on Wednesday. A convincing victory will be obligatory in the eyes of the fans, not so much because of the opponents they are facing, but more so because they have not scored a single goal in their last three home qualifiers and the carnival crowd are desperate for something to dance, sing and cheer about.

Anything but maximum points could also see the Canarinho drop out of the top four and put Dunga’s job in severe jeopardy.

Down And Out

Peru’s defeat on Sunday to Chile was, surprisingly, their first loss at home in the qualifying campaign. But, having picked up only one win so far, they are rooted to the foot of the ten-team group.

The Blanquirrojas qualified for the World Cup finals three times in the four editions between 1970 and 1982 but since then, they have never made a return to football’s grandest stage. And any hopes of ending a near 30-year jinx will have to wait a little longer. Their 2010 South Africa dreams look to have gone up in smoke as they are a full nine points behind the top five.

Although there are sill 18 points on offer after Wednesday’s round of games, Jose del Solar’s side are showing no signs of making any immediate improvements to challenge any of the teams directly above them. If anything, they appear to be going backwards, having failed to win any game of any sort since early September last year.

TEAM NEWS

Brazil

Kaka has been given the green light for selection after recovering from a foot injury, although he is still not fit enough to play the full 90 minutes. Right-back Maicon is certain to miss out after straining a thigh muscle at the weekend, effectively ruling him out of action for around a month. Dani Alves should start in his place.

Dunga has so far given no hints whether or not he will make any significant chances to the starting line-up after their strenuous display at Ecuador.

Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Julio Cesar – Maicon, Lucio, Luisao, Marcelo – Gilberto Silva, Felipe Melo – Elano, Ronaldinho, Robinho – Luis Fabiano/Adriano

Peru

Left-back Juan Vargas is banned after being sent-off against Chile last Sunday while fellow defender, Paolo de la Haza will also be suspended for card accumulation. Wenceslao Fernandez and Juan Carlos La Rosa will come in to the squad to take their places. Striker Hernan Rengifo, who missed the weekend defeat, will remain sidelined.

Probable Starting XI (4-4-2): Butron – Prado, Zambrano, Alberto Rodriguez, Vilchez – Solano, Rainer Torres, Miguel Torres, Ramirez – Chavez, Fano

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Brazil

Kaka looks unlikely to start the game but he will be called upon without hesitation if Brazil again fail to find any creative inspiration in midfield. But all eyes will also be on Robinho, Ronaldinho and Luis Fabiano, after the attacking trio failed to perform in Quito.

Peru

With numerous star absentees, veteran Nolberto Solano remains Peru’s highest profile player in the squad and his team will be counting on his experience in midfield to help stop Brazil’s marauding attackers.

PREDICTION

Brazil may be performing erratically at the moment but they should still have enough attacking artillery to bag all three points, especially against a Peru side who have lost all five of their away qualifiers so far, conceding 17 goals in the process and scoring only once.

The Selecao should feel confident of a victory, but the problem is, just three points alone won’t be enough. They have to impress the home crowd and the local media.

Brazil 3-0 Peru

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) – The chief Khmer Rouge torturer formally apologized Tuesday for the deaths of more than 14,000 people at S-21 prison, the first Pol Pot cadre to accept blame for crimes committed by the regime 30 years ago.

"I am responsible for the crimes committed at S-21, especially the torture and execution of the people there," Duch told a U.N.-Cambodian court where he is charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes.

"May I be permitted to apologies to the survivors of the regime and families of the victims who had loved ones who died brutally at S-21. I would like you to forgive me," Duch told the panel of five judges as survivors of the Khmer Rouge watched from a public gallery.

Duch, a born-again Christian whose real name is Kaing Guek Eav, said he would "like to express regret and my heartfelt sorrow for all the crimes committed" during the 1975-79 reign of terror in which 1.7 million people died in Cambodia.

But the 66-year-old former maths teacher said he was only following orders issued by the top Khmer Rouge leadership, and had feared for the lives of his family if he had disobeyed.

"I am solely responsible for this crime, but I am just a scapegoat. A person who played a role in the killings," he told the court on the second day of his formal trial.

Duch is expected to be a key witness in the future trials of those also deemed "most responsible" by the tribunal for one of the darkest chapters in the 20th century.

The other four -- "Brother Number Two" Nuon Chea, the regime's ex-president, Khieu Samphan, and Ieng Sary, its foreign minister, and his wife -- have denied knowledge of any atrocities.

If convicted, the five face a minimum of five years and a maximum of life in prison.

Jokes / Coma
« on: March 30, 2009, 10:18:51 PM »
A woman is in a coma. The Nurses are in her room giving her a sponge bath. One of them is washing her "private area" and notices that there is a response on the monitor when she touches her. They go to her husband and explain what happened, telling him, "Crazy as this sounds, maybe a little oral sex will do the trick and bring her out of the coma."
The husband is sceptical, but they assure him that they'll close the curtains for privacy. Besides it's worth a try!! The hubby finally agrees and goes into his wife's room. After a few minutes the woman's monitor flat-lines...no pulse...no heart rate. The nurses run into the room. The husband is standing there, and says, "I think she choked!!"

Jokes / A new Army Captain
« on: March 30, 2009, 10:07:32 PM »
A new Army Captain was assigned to an outfit in a remote post in the African desert. During his first inspection of the outfit, he noticed a camel hitched up behind the mess tent.
He asks the Sergeant why the camel is kept there. The nervous sergeant said, Well sir, as you know, there are 250 men here on the post and no women. And sir, sometimes the men have "urges".
That's why we have the camel." The Captain says, "I can't say that I condone this, but I understand about urges", so the camel can stay."
About a month later, the Captain starts having his own "urges".
Crazy with passion, he asks the Sergeant to bring the camel to his tent. Putting a ladder behind the camel, the Captain stands on the ladder, pulls his pants down and has wild, insane sex with the camel. When he's done, he asks the Sergeant, "Is that how the men do it?",
No . not really, sir...They usually just ride the camel into town where the girls are."

Why Women Are Leaving Men for Other Women
Cynthia Nixon did it. Lindsay Lohan's doing it. TV shows are based on it. Is it our imaginations, or are wives and girlfriends ditching their men and falling in love with other women? New science says that sexuality is more fluid than we thought.

Lately, a new kind of sisterly love seems to be in the air. In the past few years, Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon left a boyfriend after a decade and a half and started dating a woman (and talked openly about it). Actress Lindsay Lohan and DJ Samantha Ronson flaunted their relationship from New York to Dubai. Katy Perry's song "I Kissed a Girl" topped the charts. The L Word, Work Out, and Top Chef are featuring gay women on TV, and there's even talk of a lesbian reality show in the works. Certainly nothing is new about women having sex with women, but we've arrived at a moment in the popular culture when it all suddenly seems almost fashionable — or at least, acceptable.

Statistics on how many women have traded boyfriends and husbands for girlfriends are hard to come by. Although the U.S. Census Bureau keeps track of married, divorced, single, and even same-sex partners living together, it doesn't look for the stories behind those numbers. But experts like Binnie Klein, a Connecticut-based psychotherapist and lecturer in Yale's department of psychiatry, agree that alternative relationships are on the rise. "It's clear that a change in sexual orientation is imaginable to more people than ever before, and there's more opportunity — and acceptance — to cross over the line," says Klein, noting that a half-dozen of her married female patients in the past few years have fallen in love with women. "Most are afraid that if they don't go for it, they'll end up with regrets."

Feminist philosopher Susan Bordo, Ph.D., a professor of English and gender and women's studies at the University of Kentucky and author of Unbearable Weight: Feminism, Western Culture, and the Body, also agrees that in the current environment, more women may be stepping out of the conventional gender box. "When a taboo is lifted or diminished, it's going to leave people freer to pursue things," she says. "So it makes sense that we would see women, for all sorts of reasons, walking through that door now that the culture has cracked it open. Of course, we shouldn't imagine that we're living in a world where all sexual choices are possible. Just look at the cast of The L Word and it's clear that only a certain kind of lesbian — slim and elegant or butch in just the right androgynous way — is acceptable to mainstream culture."

That said, of the recent high-profile cases, it's Cynthia Nixon's down-to-earth attitude that may have blazed a trail for many women. In 1998, when Sex and the City debuted on HBO, she was settled in a long-term relationship with Danny Mozes, an English professor, with whom she had two children. They hadn't gotten married: "I was wary of it and felt like it was potentially a trap, so I steered clear of it," Nixon said in an interview with London's Daily Mirror. In 2004, after ending her 15-year relationship with Mozes, Nixon began seeing Christine Marinoni, at the time a public school advocate whom she'd met while working on a campaign to reduce class sizes in New York City. Marinoni was a great support when the actress was diagnosed with breast cancer. Far from hiding the relationship, Nixon has spoken freely in TV and newspaper interviews about it not being a big deal. "I have been with men all my life and had never met a woman I had fallen in love with before," she told the Daily Mirror. "But when I did, it didn't seem so strange. It didn't change who I am. I'm just a woman who fell in love with a woman."

Over the past several decades, scientists have struggled in fits and starts to get a handle on sexual orientation. Born or bred? Can it change during one's lifetime? A handful of studies in the 1990s, most of them focused on men, suggested that homosexuality is hardwired. In one study, researchers linked DNA markers in the Xq28 region of the X chromosome to gay males. But a subsequent larger study failed to replicate the results, leaving the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association to speculate that sexual orientation probably has multiple causes, including environmental, cognitive, and biological factors.

Today, however, a new line of research is beginning to approach sexual orientation as much less fixed than previously thought, especially when it comes to women. The idea that human sexuality forms a continuum has been around since 1948, when Alfred Kinsey introduced his famous seven-point scale, with 0 representing complete heterosexuality, 7 signifying complete homosexuality, and bisexuality in the middle, where many of the men and women he interviewed fell. The new buzz phrase coming out of contemporary studies is "sexual fluidity."

"People always ask me if this research means everyone is bisexual. No, it doesn't," says Lisa Diamond, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology and gender studies at the University of Utah and author of the 2008 book Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women's Love and Desire. "Fluidity represents a capacity to respond erotically in unexpected ways due to particular situations or relationships. It doesn't appear to be something a woman can control." Furthermore, studies indicate that it's more prevalent in women than in men, according to Bonnie Zylbergold, assistant editor of American Sexuality, an online magazine.

In a 2004 landmark study at Northwestern University, the results were eye-opening. During the experiment, the female subjects became sexually aroused when they viewed heterosexual as well as lesbian erotic films. This was true for both gay and straight women. Among the male subjects, however, the straight men were turned on only by erotic films with women, the gay ones by those with men. "We found that women's sexual desire is less rigidly directed toward a particular sex, as compared with men's, and it's more changeable over time," says the study's senior researcher, J. Michael Bailey, Ph.D. "These findings likely represent a fundamental difference between men's and women's brains."

This idea, that the libido can wander back and forth between genders, Diamond admits, may be threatening and confusing to those with conventional beliefs about sexual orientation. But when the women she's interviewed explain their feelings, it doesn't sound so wild. Many of them say, for example, they are attracted to the person, and not the gender — moved by traits like kindness, intelligence, and humor, which could apply to a man or a woman. Most of all, they long for an emotional connection. And if that comes by way of a female instead of a male, the thrill may override whatever heterosexual orientation they had.

Officials: Madonna headed to Malawi for second child
March 26, 2009, 9:55 AM EST
BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) -- Officials say Madonna is to travel to Malawi to try to adopt a second child from the impoverished African country.

An official at the Malawi welfare department said Thursday that the pop star has filed adoption papers.

Another person in Malawi close to the case says that Madonna will be in Malawi this weekend and a court could hear her adoption case as soon as Monday.

They both spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the subject.

Madonna's adoption of a Malawian boy in 2008 stirred controversy over foreign adoptions and raised questions about whether rules had been broken for the singer.

There have been rumors for some time that she was keen to adopt a girl from Malawi, where she runs a charity.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Police are seeking a woman they said used a false identity to get breast implants and liposuction, then skipped town.

Huntington Beach police said Monday that a 30-year-old woman opened a line of credit in someone else's name in September and had the procedures worth more than $12,000 performed at the Pacific Center For Plastic Surgery.

Employees said she never returned for follow-up visits.

Police said the woman faces charges of commercial burglary, grand theft and identity theft.

Indonesian set upon after falling from tree; attacks have increased lately
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Two Komodo dragons mauled a fruit-picker to death in eastern Indonesia, police and witnesses said Tuesday, the latest in a string of attacks on humans by the world's largest lizard species.

Police Sgt. Kosmas Jalang said 31-year-old Muhamad Anwar was attacked on Komodo, one of four islands where the giant reptile is found in the wild, minutes after he fell out of a sugar-apple tree on Monday.

He was bleeding badly from bites to his hands, body, legs and neck after two lizards, waiting below, attacked him, according to a neighbor, Theresia Tawa. He died at a clinic on the neighboring island of Flores soon after.

Attacks have increased
Attacks on humans by Komodo dragons — said to number at less than 4,000 in the wild — are rare, but seem to have increased in recent years.

An 8-year-old boy was killed in 2007 — the first recorded deadly attack on a human by one of the endangered lizards in three decades. A park ranger narrowly survived after one of the animals entered his hut last month and started biting his hands and legs.

There have been several other attacks in recent months, according to Metro TV.

The reptiles, which can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh as much as 150 pounds, have shark-like serrated teeth and a bite that can be deadly. Its saliva contains roughly 50 different known bacteria strains, so infection is a risk.

Komodos can be found in the wild on the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Padar and Rinca. Tiny numbers also can be found on Flores.

General Discussion / Alaska and Florida consider bans on bestiality
« on: March 21, 2009, 01:11:49 PM »
Recent cases prompt states to consider outlawing sex with animals.(so it was permitted b4)

JUNEAU, Alaska - It's a subject that can cause nervous snickering, a little uneasiness and even a few bad jokes.

But many in the southeast Alaska community of Klawock, population 800, weren't laughing last April after a 26-year-old registered sex offender was accused of molesting a local family's pet dog.

The man was spotted by a local woman coaxing the Labrador retriever into the woods near a ball field. There he allegedly tied it to a tree, taped its muzzle shut with duct tape and had sex with it, witnesses told police at the time.

The man had been twice convicted of raping a young boy and more recently had served probation for assault after lunging at a child. While the incident with the dog was reported to the police, Klawock Mayor Don Marvin said nothing happened for two days while fearful parents escorted their children home from school.

"When this incident happened, we had a community that was scared," Marvin said.

Because Alaska has no law against such an attack, Ketchikan District Attorney James Scott eventually charged the man with two counts of criminal mischief, which was later changed to a theft charge.

In requesting a $10,000 bail, Scott told the court that the state was concerned that if a small child had been available and unattended that day, "the small child would have been found taped (and) tied in the woods."

Looking for ways to prosecute
Shocked by that and other similar cases of involving humans having sex with animals, lawmakers in Florida and Alaska are considering bans on bestiality. They are among 15 states where the practice is not explicitly illegal.

Alaska's House Judiciary Committee on Friday heard testimony on a measure that would expand the state's animal cruelty law to include sexual conduct. It would make the practice a class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine.

In Florida, a bill that would make sex with animals punishable by up to five years in prison has been unanimously approved by two Senate committees and has two other committee stops before reaching the full chamber.

Florida Sen. Nan Rich, a Democrat, has a thick folder in her office containing news clippings of cases around the state of people having sex with animals. While the act is sickening enough, she says research has shown that people who molest animals are likely to rape or molest people.

"There's quite a number of cases," said Rich, holding up an article. "This one is, unfortunately, a man having sex with his guide dog. This is about a goat's death, a female goat in Walton County that had been sexually assaulted. Unfortunately it's not an isolated incident. We need a mechanism to prosecute."

Cases, bans and protections
The Walton County case in 2006 helped bring the problem to light. There were at least four goat rapes in Mossy Head, including one that resulted in the animal dying. Instead of being charged with a sex act, a suspect was charged with stealing two goats, said Dee Thompson, the director of Panhandle Animal Welfare Society.

Authorities in Tallahassee, Florida, also struggled in 2005 to find charges that would fit against a blind man accused of having sex with his guide dog. The man was initially charged with felony animal cruelty, but prosecutors dropped that charge and recharged him with "breach of the peace."

In Tennessee, bestiality was banned in 2007. Arizona did so in 2006 after a Mesa deputy fire chief was accused of bestial acts with his next-door neighbor's lamb. Washington state also banned sex with animals in 2006, after a man died of a perforated colon from having sex with a horse on a farm in rural King County.

But they conceded two late goals and penalties were needed to find a winner. Shay Given’s heroics secured City’s passage into the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, but the extra-time and spot-kick lottery will have taken its toll on Mark Hughes’ men as they are set to face Hamburg in the next round of the tournament.

Manchester City have won all of their last seven league matches against Sunderland, while the Citizens have yet to be held to a draw at home. Sunderland’s defence will have to be alert, as City are second behind Manchester United only in scoring at home, after netting 30 goals in their 14 matches at Eastlands. Interestingly enough the Black Cats were the last opponents City defeated away from home - all the way back in August.

Looking For A Positive

Sunderland are in a bad run of form, and Ricky Sbragia will be keen to get the Black Cats back to their winning ways by pulling a victory out of the hat at the City of Manchester Stadium. Sunderland are on a four-game winless streak and have only managed one win in their last seven league outings. Their poor run of form has seen the side slip down towards the relegation zone after some promising results before Christmas saw them make a steady ascent. Sbragia could welcome back several injured Cats to the line-up, but the gaffer knows Sunderland’s dismal record against Manchester City will be a big hurdle to overcome.

Star striker Djibril Cissé has commented to the press that he is prepared to be dropped to the bench if manager Ricky Sbragia chooses to go with his preferred 4-5-1 formation on the road. Striker Kenwyne Jones is often chosen over the Frenchman, but Cissé will surely look to come off the bench and make an impact in this encounter.

TEAM NEWS

Manchester City

Hughes could be without two first team mainstays in Stephen Ireland and Wayne Bridge, both falling victim to injury at Aalborg. Ireland suffered an ankle injury while Bridge was substituted early in the second half with a hamstring problem.

Vincent Kompany will be reassessed for a reccurring toe injury that has plagued the midfielder for some time.

Craig Bellamy could make an early return from a knee problem in this clash, although the Welshman was not fit enough to travel with the team to face Aalborg.

Squad: Given, Hart, Schmeichel, Richards, Onuoha, Dunne, Bridge, Garrido, Zabaleta, Wright-Phillips, Elano, Caicedo, Ireland, Fernandes, Vassell, Weiss, Robinho, Evans, Bojinov, Berti, Etuhu, Bellamy.

Sunderland

Anton Ferdinand and Nyron Nosworthy look to return from injury to boost Sbragia’s defensive options. Both have suffered hamstring injuries, with Ferdinand missing two games and Nosworthy missing nine.

Tal Ben Haim will be unavailable for the Black Cats given their loan agreement with the City-owned player.

Teemu Tainio is seeking the aid of a specialist to solve a knee problem, while Kieran Richardson completes a two-match ban.

Squad: Fulop, Gordon, Bardsley, McCartney, Collins, Ferdinand, McShane, Nosworthy, Davenport, Whitehead, Malbranque, Leadbitter, Edwards, Yorke, Reid, Cissé, Jones, Murphy, Healy.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Manchester City

The return of striker Craig Bellamy could prove a big boost for Manchester City. The Citizens have struggled without the Welshman on the pitch, and his combative nature might bring back some life to a somewhat lifeless side.

Sunderland

Steed Malbranque’s form of late has been some of his best, using his dribbling skills and ability to create havoc for the other team. However, his improved form has come as Sunderland’s results have gone south, and the Frenchman will be looking to up his game as well as the team’s standings.

 PREDICTION

Four spots on the league table and three points separate these two teams, and a loss for either one could bring them closer to the drop zone. A Manchester City win would see the Sky Blues in touching distance of the number seven spot, the position Mark Hughes would like to finish no lower than this season.

The return of Craig Bellamy could be a big boost for the Blues, but talisman Robinho has not scored since December 28 and will need to hit his scoring form soon to help out his underachieving team at home and in Europe.

The Black Cats are desperate for points and are on a winless run, and while a visit to Manchester City might prove a tall order, what better time than now to start getting back on track towards Premier League safety?

Natasha Richardson mourned as a 'wonderful woman'
March 19, 2009, 8:15 AM EST
NEW YORK (AP) -- Tributes have begun to pour in from across the show business generations for Natasha Richardson, the Tony Award-winning actress who died after suffering a head injury on a ski slope.

"She was a wonderful woman and actress and treated me like I was her own," said Lindsay Lohan, who as a pre-teen starred with Richardson in a remake of "The Parent Trap" in 1998. "My heart goes out to her family. This is a tragic loss."

Actress Judi Dench told the BBC that Richardson was "a really great actress" who had "an incredibly luminous quality, that you seldom see, and a great sense of humor."

"It's just so shocking, really shocking, and I hope that everybody leaves the family quietly to somehow pick up the pieces," Dench said.

Sam Mendes, who produced the Broadway musical "Cabaret" for which Richardson won a Tony, said, "It defies belief that this gifted, brave, tenacious, wonderful woman is gone."

Richardson fell during a private lesson Monday at a ski resort in Quebec. She was not wearing a helmet. The 45-year-old actress seemed fine afterward, but about an hour later, she complained that she didn't feel well. She was hospitalized Tuesday in Montreal and later flown to a hospital in New York.

Alan Nierob, the Los Angeles-based publicist for Richardson's husband, Liam Neeson, confirmed her death Wednesday without giving details on the cause.

There were no details on funeral arrangements.

Neeson and Richardson's sister, actress Joely Richardson, were seen leaving Lenox Hill hospital Wednesday. Actress Lauren Bacall also visited the hospital.

Jokes / Mad Cow Disease
« on: March 18, 2009, 08:36:56 AM »
A female TV reporter arranged for an interview with a farmer, seeking the main cause of Mad Cow disease.
The Lady: "Good evening, sir. I am here to collect information on the possible source of Mad Cow Disease. Can you offer any reason for this disease?"
The Farmer stared at the reporter and said: "Do you know that a bull mounts a cow only once a year?"
The lady reporter (obviously embarrassed): "Well, sir, that's a new piece of information, but what's the relation between this phenomenon and Mad Cow disease?"
The Farmer: "And, madam, do you know that we milk a cow twice a day?"
The reporter: "Sir, this is really valuable information, but what about getting to the point?"
The Farmer: "I am getting to the point, madam. Just imagine, if I was playing with your tits twice a day and only screwing you once a year, wouldn't you get mad?"

Jim decided to propose to Sandy, but prior to her acceptance Sandy had to confess to her man about her childhood illness.
She informed Jim that she suffered a disease that left her breasts at the maturity of a 12 year old.
He stated that it was OK, because he loved her soooo much.
However, Jim felt this was also the time for him to open up and admit that he also had a deformity from birth. Jim looked Sandy in the eyes and said, 'I too have a problem. My penis is the same size as an infant and I hope that you can deal with that - once we are married.'
She said, 'Yes I will marry you and learn to live with your infant sized penis.'
Sandy and Jim got married and they could not wait for the honeymoon.
Jim whisked Sandy off to their hotel suite and they started touching, teasing, holding one another.
As Sandy put her hands in Jim's pants - she began to scream and ran out of the room!
Jim ran after her to find out what was wrong.
'You told me that your penis was the size of an infant!', she said.
'Yes it is... 8 pounds, 7 ounces, and 19 inches long!'

CCL Preview: Puerto Rico Islanders vs. Cruz Azul
The CONCACAF Champions League resumes Tuesday with Puerto Rico hosting Cruz Azul in the first leg of their semifinal tie.
Who: Puerto Rico Islanders (PUR) vs. C.D. Cruz Azul (MEX)
When: 8:00 pm ET, Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Where: Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel, Bayamon, Puerto Rico
T.V.: Fox Soccer Channel/ Telefutura
The CONCACAF Champions League semifinals kick off Tuesday when the Islanders of Puerto Rico play host to C.D. Cruz Azul of Mexico. The Islanders' improbable run to the semifinals went through a very talented Marathon side in the quarterfinals, and now the United Soccer League side will look to continue its fine form against one of the region’s traditional powers.

Nicholas Addlery played the hero for Puerto Rico against Marathon. The Jamaican scored once in each leg, including a game winner in the dying minutes of the second leg in Honduras, to help Puerto Rico reach this stage. But Addlery will need some help if the Islanders are to break through the Cruz Azul defensive line. The Cementeros are giving up an average of just one goal every 180 minutes in the CCL and did not allow a goal in their quarterfinal tie with Pumas.

To their credit, the Islanders own one of the better scoring records in the CCL, having knocked home twelve goals in eight matches since beginning group play.

Backing up the Islanders attack is a back line that has been a bit leaky from time to time, but was solid in the victory over Marathon. The fine form of ‘keeper Bill Gaudette should get a lot of the credit. The Hummelstown, Pennsylvania native came up with numerous big saves in the quarters when his team was on its heels for much of the second leg.

Cruz Azul comes into the tie with Puerto Rico as the favorite after dispatching fellow Mexican power Pumas in the quarterfinals. In stark contrast to the Islanders, Frustrazul has relied on defense to carry the team this far. But the fine defensive form should not discount the amount of attacking firepower this team possesses.

The list of stars in the Cruz Azul attack is deep and mixed well between young strikers like Luis Landin and Alejandro Vela and wily veteran midfielders like Jamie Lozano and Gerardo Torrado.

Despite scoring only twice in the tie with Pumas, the Cementeros piled up 25 shots, 15 shots on target, and earned 14 corners in two matches, stats that show the lack of scoring was more a product of poor finishing than a lack of chances created.

Players To Watch:

Puerto Rico Islanders: Noah Delgado. The 29-year-old Californian is Puerto Rico’s co-captain and plays a vital role in the midfield. Delgado will need to be at his best for Puerto Rico to deal with Cruz Azul’s supremely talented midfield.

C.D. Cruz Azul: Cristian Riveros. The Paraguayan finished off the tie with Pumas with a well taken goal in the second leg.

10 kids drink windshield wiper fluid at daycare
Staffers mistook liquid for Kool-Aid, Arkansas officials say

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Hospital officials say 10 children drank windshield wiper fluid after a staffer at Arkansas daycare center mistook the liquid for Kool-Aid.

Laura James, a pediatric pharmacologist and toxicologist at Arkansas Children's Hospital, tell The Associated Press that the daycare staffer put the windshield wiper fluid in a refrigerator by accident after a shopping trip.

James says doctors estimate the children, ages 2 to 7, each drank about an ounce of the fluid before realizing what it was Thursday afternoon.

Hilary DeMillo, a hospital spokeswoman, says one child remained hospitalized Friday. James says the child had high levels of methanol in blood samples, which can cause blindness.

Julie Munsell, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services, says child welfare officials planned to visit the community daycare Friday. Munsell did not know the name of the daycare.

United favorites for Liverpool showdownAssociated Press

LONDON (AP) - Under normal circumstances, any team fresh from a 4-0 win over Real Madrid would be considered the favorite for its next match, but third-place Liverpool goes into Saturday's Premier League showdown at Manchester United seven points behind the leaders.

Liverpool prepared for one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the season with an overpowering display against Madrid in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday, but their spluttering domestic form and an over-reliance on striker Fernando Torres and midfielder Steven Gerrard means United starts as the clear favorite.

United's prosaic progress to the quarterfinals of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Inter Milan on Wednesday may work against Liverpool. Manager Alex Ferguson was incensed by the way senior players like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes squandered possession against the Italians, and Liverpool can expect a reaction at Old Trafford.

"It was really reckless football and it allowed Inter Milan to get a grip of the game," Ferguson said. "From the middle of the first half to the end of the first half they (Inter) were the better team."

Nemanja Vidic, scorer of United's first goal, admitted the performance had been flawed.

"We're at home in front of our crowd and I hope we are going to be much better than we were against Inter," Vidic said. "We will definitely try to improve, to erase the mistakes we made and play better against Liverpool."

Vidic's partner in central defense, Rio Ferdinand, said he had been impressed by Liverpool's win over Madrid and feels that even if United wins Saturday it would be premature to write off the team's challenge.

"They've had a good week, getting a great result against Real Madrid," Ferdinand said. "People say, 'If you win this game, you win the league,' but it just continues until it's mathematically over and one team wins it, and hopefully that will be us.

"If we win, it will obviously make it hard for them but I couldn't care what happens to Liverpool as long as we beat them. If we do that and that leads to people thinking they're out of it, then so be it."

Liverpool has taken four points from its last three league games, but the team should at least provide United with a stiffer test than it did in the corresponding fixture last season, when the Reds slipped to a 3-0 loss after Javier Mascherano was sent off.

Torres and Gerrard have scored 17 league goals between them this season, while the rest of the squad has combined for just 25.

Both should be fit, although Torres needed a painkilling injection to play against Madrid.

"I feel good," the Spaniard said. "My ankle felt a little painful in the second half against Real, but that doesn't matter for a match like this.

"We will work hard on the injury and train hard and I think I will be 100 percent for Saturday. It is a massive game that I hope to win because that will give us more chances in the league. We know it's very important to win there, if not they will be many points ahead."

Chelsea, second ahead of Liverpool on goal difference, hosts Manchester City on Sunday, looking for a fourth consecutive league win under temporary manager Guus Hiddink. Striker Didier Drogba's form has revived under Hiddink, but the key to the rest of their season could be Ghana midfielder Michael Essien, who marked his return to the starting lineup from injury with a goal in the Blues' 2-2 Champions League draw at Juventus on Tuesday.

City striker Robinho, openly courted by Chelsea last summer, should be fit for the game at Stamford Bridge provided he emerges unscathed from Thursday's UEFA cup match with Aalborg.

Aston Villa faces Tottenham Sunday looking to halt a slump in form that threatens its hold on fourth place - and with it the final Champions League qualification spot.

Villa has gone six games, in all competitions, without a win, but manager Martin O'Neill said his side is rejuvenated after a short break in the United Arab Emirates.

"We have trained and enjoyed some sun," he said. "The players now feel refreshed. It was vital to regroup, get ourselves together again and now we want to go out and win some games."

Fifth-place Arsenal is three points behind Villa and hosts Blackburn on Saturday, less than 72 hours after its victory on penalties over AS Roma.

The Gunners will recall Andrei Arshavin, who was ineligible for the Roma match.

Blackburn's confidence was boosted when it climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Fulham on Wednesday.

"It's a huge relief from a mental point of view," manager Sam Allardyce said. "Continuing to see yourselves in the bottom three doesn't help, even though you tell the players 'You can't look at the papers, stay away from them."'

There are two games between teams struggling to avoid relegation. Middlesbrough, in 19th place, hosts Portsmouth, which is one place and two points above in the table. Newcastle, which is above Portsmouth on goal difference, travels to Hull, four points ahead.

Newcastle captain Michael Owen will play some part in the game after two months out with ankle ligament damage.

In Saturday's other games, Everton hosts Stoke, Fulham travels to Bolton and Sunderland hosts Wigan.

Jose Mourinho Alleged To Have Punched A Fan
Police are investigating claims that Internazionale manager Jose Mourinho punched a fan after his club lost to Manchester United late last night.
Internazionale manager Jose Mourinho is to be quizzed by Greater Manchester police following reported claims that he assaulted a fan after his side crashed out of the Champions League round of 16 clash by a 2-0 scoreline against reigning European champions Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Mourinho is believed to have punched a supporter close to the Inter team bus. Police have contacted Manchester United to request CCTV footage of the area, and a police spokesperson was quoted by Sky Sports as saying, "Shortly before midnight last night a man reported that he had been punched in the face outside Old Trafford.

"We are investigating an allegation of common assault," the statement concluded.

There is yet to be an official comment from either Internazionale, or Manchester United.

United though are believed to be aware of the incident.

If the charismatic Portuguese manager is questioned by British police, it will not be the first time. While boss of Chelsea, in 2007, Mourinho was said to have been arrested and cautioned after refusing to allow police to put his pet dog - Gullit - into quarantine.
