Football / Chris Birchall Thread
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:45:09 AM »
Can someone please explain to me how Chris Birchall cannot get playing time, let alone a start at League Two Port Vale?? He has been there for a few months and I think has about a grand total of 1 appearance worth 10-15 mins. Port Vale has also been struggling mightily the past month, yet Birchall sees no action. I checked out the Port Vale board and many have suggested that Birchall is terribly out-of-shape.

I suppose a better question would be why did he go back to that division in the first place? Two years ago he helps LA win a championship, and last year he is a starter for Columbus. Could his agent not have gotten him a better stint/trial anywhere else? If Port Vale was chosen just for fitness then he's wasting his time riding the bench.

And yet an even better question is why is he called-up for the Belize and Peru matches? Unless your name is Yorke or Latapy and this is 10 years ago, NO ONE should be getting called up when they havent played a match in over 6 months.

Football / Birchall Exposed for Expansion Draft

Not surprised. Not a great year for him, contributed little to our WC cause. I watched a lot of LA games this year and even though LA won the mls cup I dont think he played that well all season for them.

Football / DC United Waive Julius James
« on: February 17, 2011, 02:35:33 PM »
http://www.dcunited.com/press-release/2011/02/dc-united-waives-defender-julius-james

Washington, D.C. - D.C. United announced today that it has waived defender Julius James. In one and a half seasons in Washington, James played in 31 MLS contests (24 starts), recording two goals in 2,388 minutes on the pitch. In a separate transaction, United has acquired allocation money from the LA Galaxy in exchange for an international roster spot.

“We would like to thank Julius for his contributions to D.C. United and we wish him well in the future,” said General Manager Dave Kasper.

Kasper continues, “We are also pleased to have acquired allocation money that provides us with an additional asset for future player moves.”

James joined the Black-and-Red in a trade with Houston on August 14, 2009. The central defender made nine appearances (eight starts) for United during his first season, scoring in the club’s season finale on October 24 in Kansas City. In 2010 James logged 1,682 minutes for the Black-and-Red, appearing in 22 League contests (16 starts). The Trinidad and Tobago National Team member scored his lone goal of the campaign in a 1-0 win over Toronto FC on September 11.

James was selected ninth overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC from the University of Connecticut. During his rookie campaign the defender played 13 matches (10 starts) for Toronto, scoring in his MLS debut on May 31 against the LA Galaxy.

Football / U.S. U-20s continue prep with tour of Caribbean
« on: February 03, 2009, 11:22:20 AM »
Please merge if this has been posted. Didnt see it.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=614872&sec=us&root=us&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab4pos2&cc=5901

The U.S U-20s won their fixtures against Joe Public and a Trinidad & Tobago U-20 representative XI with relative ease on a recent tour of the Caribbean (Jan. 18-24). The trip was was designed as preparation for the upcoming U-20 CONCACAF Championship (March 6-15).

Anthony Wallace and the U.S. U-20 men's national team had a productive tour of the Caribbean.

Yet beyond the idyllic Caribbean backdrop and performances, U.S. U-20 coach Thomas Rongen is yet to be convinced of his side's composition offensively.

By his own admission the current U-20s lack inspiration and accordingly emphasis was placed on what competitive advantage could be gained for the team.

Winning is often in the detail and Rongen has left nothing to chance. Appreciably keyed up with less then six weeks until the U.S face Jamaica in its opening game, he explained:

"The main objective was to play the games and understand the conditions. We stayed in the same hotels and practiced on the same fields that we will have during the tournament.

"We now know the lay of the land, and from a logistical point of view we are very well prepared now."

Rongen felt part of his side's success at the U-20 World Cup in Canada in 2007 was due to extensive preparation, and he has taken this approach further in attempting to qualify for Egypt 2009.

As a result, the U.S. even undertook scientific analysis of the conditions, down to assessing the type of grass.

"The grass is a combination of Bermuda and Irish grass," said Rongen. "It's a better playing surface than I anticipated, we'll have no surprises especially in the things like stud lengths and conditions."

The extent of Rongen's research reflects his experience -- this will be his third World Cup cycle -- and recognition that unlike previous campaigns, he cannot rely on inspirational talents like Bobby Convey or Freddy Adu. This team's success will be built on teamwork and preparation.

FC Dallas midfielder Brek Shea returned to the U-20 squad after a lengthy lay-off with knee ligament damage, and clearly benefited from the experience.

"It's humid and it felt like we were walking into a sauna. It was very hot all day, but the games are in the evening which helps," said Shea. "It took a few days to find our legs&the team will be stronger for gaining experience before the championships in March"

On a personal level Shea will have enjoyed the tour after scoring with his second touch in the U-20's first game against Joe Public. The U.S ran out 2-1 winners after debutant Tony Taylor from Jacksonville University opened the scoring.

"Joe Public was full of big individuals," Shea explained. "They were fast, strong and liked to take you on 1-1 in the last third ... they were deadly, but we coped well.

The U.S played a Trinidad and Tobago U-20 representative side in its second game, and produced a convincing 3-0 victory.

Significantly the fixture emphasized the tactical direction the U.S. is heading in to make the most of its talent.

"Our back line is big and fast," said Shea. "Despite having a lot of new guys we followed the coach's instructions to get the ball into the box, two of the goals came from crosses."

Of the new boys, Tony Taylor's two goals in two games impressed Rongen. The squad had a strong physical presence to it, forwards Casey Townsend, Tony Taylor and Will Bruin are 5-foot-11, 6-foot and 6-foot-1 respectively.

Against the T&T U-20s, Bruin stated his case for playing time by opening the scoring after a Tony Cascio cross. Tony Taylor then added a second, before Peri Marosevic headed home an Anthony Wallace cross.

Rongen is yet to be convinced as to who will partner Marosevic, but defensively, the U.S. team will be tough to break down going into the Concacaf Championship. In the U-20s last six fixtures the team has only conceded three goals. Kyle Davies played his way back into form, having overcome some injury concerns, and Richard Balchan's ability to go forward and versatility count strongly in his favor.

Goalkeeper Sean Johnson looked convincing but faces stiff competition from Josh Lambo, Brian Perk and Zac MacMath for the two places on the final roster.

Offensively the side has not dove-tailed as Rongen would like. Playmaker Felix Garcia has proved central to Rongen plans thus far, and has been given the all clear to train after recent injury. At 6-foot-1, Garcia, along with the likes of Shea and Ike Opara make the team very dangerous from set pieces.

Rutgers' Dilly Duka can also expect to be recalled to Rongen's Florida camps next month. The midfielder showed some imaginative touches especially in setting up Taylor's second goal of the tour.

Some remedial work to the offense will be required in the forthcoming Bradenton camps, but Rongen is confident of putting the final pieces of the puzzle together.

"We are looking for a good post-up player to work off a small striker," said Rongen. "I think we still have to work on the chemistry offensively, the exceptional players are not there but we are deep in quality."

Football / San Jose Deny Birchall Reports. Sealy Possibly Leaving Quakes

Doyle rubbishes Birchall talk, but expects Lima return
By Jeff Carlisle · January 7, 2009

If the overseas press was to be believed, it was a matter of when, not if the San Jose Earthquakes would acquire Trinidad & Tobago international Chris Birchall. But on Tuesday, San Jose General Manager John Doyle denied the reports linking the midfielder to the Quakes, stating “I don’t see [Birchall] coming to San Jose.”

Doyle did confirm that on a recent trip to England, Birchall was one of the players San Jose was interested in, but his lack of first team action while on loan at Carlisle United (no relation) meant that Doyle and head coach Frank Yallop were never able to see him in a competitive fixture.

“For us, it went cold,” said Doyle about the possibility of bringing Birchall to MLS.

Doyle had decidedly better news concerning midfielder Francisco Lima. The Brazilian was thought to be dissatisfied with his contract that paid him a base salary last year of $195,000, and speculation had Lima heading back to Russia, where he has spent time with both Dinamo Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow. But Doyle indicated that he expects the 37-year-old to be playing for San Jose in 2009.

“By all accounts, Lima is coming back,” said Doyle. “Now, he’s not going to be here forever, so we’re still looking for a defensive midfielder. But as of today, he’s coming back.”

Doyle was less optimistic about the possible return of out-of-contract forward Scott Sealy. The T&T international is apparently exploring opportunities in Turkey and Israel, but the Quakes’ GM is still holding out hope that something can be worked out.

“We’ve saved some cap space for Sealy if he does decide to come back,” Doyle said.

Football / Jones sidelined for at least two months.

Jones blow for Black Cats.
By: Sky Sports.

Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones will miss at least two months of the new season through injury. The powerful 23-year-old was a genuine plus-point for Sunderland last season but a collision with goalkeeper David James during the friendly clash between Trinidad & Tobago and England on 1st June saw him damage knee ligaments.

Jones will consult a surgeon again to decide whether surgery is required but whatever is decided, it seems likely the player will require a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Black Cats boss Roy Keane said: "Clearly there is knee ligament damage, but we are hopeful.

"We've got two or three weeks to play with yet but it would certainly rule him out for the first month or two whatever happens."

With the issue of footballers and their contracts refusing to be quelled, Keane has added his voice to one of the game's hottest debates at present.

The case of Cristiano Ronaldo's much protracted possible switch to Real Madrid has made the headlines, with Sepp Blatter's 'slave' comments having added to the mountain of column inches dedicated to the subject. When quizzed on the issue, Keane was typically direct and offered his view that it is very much a case of 'dog eat dog' in football's ruthless world.

Tough business

"I think it's always been the case if players fancy leaving and make it hard for a manager and their attitude isn't up to scratch, then you sell them," he added on Sky Sports News.

"Having said that, in defence of players, when a club is finished with you they get rid.

"My advice is look after yourself. If you get a chance for bigger and better things, then go for it.

"I've experienced that myself. People question players' loyalty, I question clubs' loyalty.

"It's a business to them. If you're not needed then you can be out of the door in 10 minutes, and I'm speaking from experience.

"It works both ways."

James wishes Jones well.
By: Mark Hinton (Goal.com).

It was a collision with David James during June's friendly international between Trinidad & Tobago and England that damaged the Sunderland striker's knee ligaments - and the Portsmouth goalkeeper has apologised to Jones and wished him a full recovery.

Portsmouth's England keeper David James has expressed regret about the incident in which Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones was injured, and said he hopes to see him playing Premier League football again early next year.

James and Jones collided during the friendly centenary international between England and Trinidad & Tobago at the beginning of June, and the resultant damage to the Sunderland man's knee ligaments means he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Indeed, the ex-Southampton striker, who had an impressive first season in the Premier League with the Black Cats, is expected to be out of first-team contention until at least the New Year.

The Sunderland Echo reports that a rueful James has been in touch with Jones, sending him his apologies and best wishes and explaining that there was nothing at all intentional about the collision.

James said: "I hope Kenwyne has a speedy recovery – I believe he could be out until February.

"Certainly, I had no intention of hurting the player. It was purely accidental.

"I tried contacting him afterwards and sent a text but haven't managed to speak to him yet. It was a sour end to the season and upsetting all round."

England won the friendly 3-0 in Port of Spain, with fellow Sunderland stars Carlos Edwards and Dwight Yorke also featuring for T&T.

However, Jones was crocked just a few minutes into the game, having only just received clearance to be involved after breaking a wrist in the last Premier League game of the season, against Arsenal, a couple of weeks earlier.

Sunderland have not yet commented officially on the extent of Jones's injury, but he is thought unlikely to play again this year.

Consequently, Black Cats' boss Roy Keane is looking for quality strikers, and has been strongly linked with Tottenham's Darren Bent and Everton's Andy Johnson.

I know theres a thread for nba playoffs, but a new one had to have been made to tell of the severe beating the Raptors are going to take....

Fellas, this is not regular season anymore. This isnt beating up on the celtics or bobcats to pad your win column anymore. This is playoffs. And the Nets are an experienced playoff team, in the post season every year. This is a first for many of the Raptors. Nets always turn it on once the post-season begins. You can throw away regular season cuz it means nothing now. Edge: Nets

RJ is back and gaining momentum. Kidd has been watched carefully over the whole year with his minutes so hes going to be fresh. Edge: Nets

Vince-anity is getting red red hot. Two triple doubles within the past two weeks. He is going to make you guys cry again. Allyuh remember when Papa Vince did this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Gh5opCD6Rm0

Be careful what you wish for and just be happy youre in the playoffs. You'll get some more media coverage BECAUSE OF VC and youre back in the playoffs after smelling it up for so long. So Enjoy it and make it a great atmosphere in the ACC. But when papa Vince makes you cry again dont go back to supporting your maple leafs, because they stink, too.

Ill give the Raptors a win or two this series, and being that they are my 2nd team i hope they learn from this experience and gear it towards next year....Watch out for the triple threat of VC,Kidd, and RJ. Its Licks ssuh!

Football / The P.A
« on: May 11, 2006, 08:00:38 AM »
listening thru the radio im hearing this man over the P.A every 10 seconds screaming somethin sounding very unpleasant. Then towards the end he started sounding more like a drunkard, with his ole ole chant wa off key. then throughtout the whole match hes beggin the crowd to make noise. Thats not good for the game as it points out to everyone how quiet the crowd is and such.

Ive never heard this kinda thing from a football match.   Im wondering, for the feallas able to make home games,  if he is always like this, or was last night different?

It also dont look good for us. We've got ITV and tv from all over the world scoping out the trini football scene and this is what they hear. Its embarrassing. it gives them the impression that this is our football culture. do you all think he was given certain instructions when he was given the job, or he just decided to hear his own voice over the p.a on his own?

Football / Warner allegedly speaks out on donovan
« on: December 09, 2005, 10:56:34 AM »
http://espndeportes.espn.go.com/story?id=389272
i think it pretty much translates here:

The President of CONCACAF, Jack Warner, assured his audience that Landon Donovan is stupid for saying that Mexico didn't deserve it.

Jack Warner stood up in anger and railed against the leading player from the United States, Landon Donovan.

The President of Concacaf learned that Donovan considers Mexico unworthy of their nomination as a seeded member of a group in the world Cup draw that will take place this Friday.

And he threw everything at him.

"Donovan is very young and very stupid, very stupid" he shot off immediately.

Warner decked out in an impeccable black coat and hat in the best Caponesque style, kept firing with his best artillery.

"Donovan does not have the experience to give an opinion. He's very young and very stupid. He's no sense of history of soccer, no background. He doesn't know anything. For me, it's a bunch of stupidity."

With unusual anger in his gestures and his voice, including trembling lips while he lambasted Landon Donovan.

"Donovan has been to the World Cup twice. He has no record in these tournaments, what has he done? Forget about him, and what he said. He's very stupid, ¿OK? ¿OK?", emphasized the President of CONCACAF.

Previously, Warner had praised Mexico for their nomination as a seeded team.

"This designation is very deserved, it's a great achievement for Mexico and a great achievement for CONCACAF" said Warner.

"If Mexico is up, CONCACAF FOOTBALL is up. Mexico and my Confederation, we work united" added Warner.

start to prepare to make noise like youve never made noise before. this is the biggest sporting event in our nation's history and the last meaningful game in trinidad for a couple years.also probably on international tv with eurosport and others likely carrying the match. this is an obvious post, and to make the atmosphere fantastic again goes without saying, especially to all the fans here. but i still want to remind you to get ur vocals ready from now.

the mexico atmosphere, on tv, seemed really great, and now those going to the game on the 12th need to take it up even a notch further. we need those bahrainians to piss their pants when they step onto the field. all chants and songs have to come out in full force.

i think KC is depending on metrostars not winning today vs chivas, to make the post-season. right now metros up 1-0 in the 88th min. and chivas have been pressuring the past 20 mins and have missed incredible chances to score.meola with some huge saves. metrostars also hurt themselves by hitting the post 3 times.

ian cox has been playing well for gillingham sine last season. yes, they were relegated but not because of their defense. i think he'd be perfect for this game particularly since sancho has been out for a while and we dont want to see cyd gray again. leo needs to call him up. and start glen. none of this glen best off the bench. if you dont start him soon enough then he'll stop producing off the bench. reward the man with this lineup:

           Hislop

Cox  Dog  Lawerence  Avery John(his name better be spelled AVERY,not Emery on Espn)

Birchall  Edwards  Spann  Eve

        Glenn Yorke

Subs: Stern, Jack, Theobold, Grey, Wolfe, Jones, Sancho

Its time we go for 3 pts. we have nothing to lose. bunker down tactics is fine so long as we dont use it the whole game.
