« on: September 23, 2007, 11:23:46 AM »
Nice discussion. It always hard to compare players of different generations. So it is always best to leave it as best of his generation. Filho right, Diego did not really have anyone to challenge him in his era. The players of the late 60's & 70's was like a "who's who" of football. A real golden age so to speak. It was a time where modern football grew, simply put teachers to ones we discuss now.
Football from 1978 and much of the 80's was dower IMHO. WC 86 save that era mainly due to Maradona's performance, the Brazil vs France game and arguably Denmark.
An old Hungarian footballer once told me that the main difference is that of television. We really could not see that best of DeStefano, Puskas, Pele, Esuebio, Cruyff etc. I have done my best to get footage of these players and surely they deserve the mantle of "Great"
So I agree Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Zizou, Gullit, Van Basten also deserve the same Mantle. On their day each better than the other. Now consistency that is another discussion  ;D

Maradona was a cheat and I never like him for that. He was skillful though and unstoppable in World Cup 86

Another game given to man United by a referee. Why they just don't start games at Old Trafford with a penalty for Man United. No more talk from Fergie about diving because clearly he does nothing in his own team to discourage it. Just look at Ronaldo, Saha, Nani and people will see the truth of the matter. Anyway I eh vex Chelsea get beat the owner get what he deserve, jack ass

off topic ,, but hearing the ladies WC coach want to quit . He did a fantastic job ,for soccer in canada basically devoping the entire youth pipe line .The girls are now in the top 10 in the world ,Trinidad should hire him for one of the youth mens teams ,I think .

Where do you all get your information. My daughter is part of the Canada program. Everbody knew their was a good generation coming through the system before Pelerud. People in the female game was waiting for Chapman, Sinclair, Kiss & others to come through. If any thing he inherited a great crop and with his boom ball football drove away many talented players who were taught to control and play. In favor of big strong beast who could kick down opponents. Pelerud did more harm than good but Canada was fooled by results at u20 & last WC. But the writing on the wall since. Look at the decline since those results. Keep him far away from T'dad football.

Having lived and taught in Africa, I can say without a doubt that they have no real records of anything. The day you walk in the office is the date that they put on the register. Plus when they actually file it would be the official date (which could be two years from when you first walk een. Sometimes people don't come into the capital for years, when they do come they do all their business.
They had youths in high school both male and female that older than me.

I would guess is the same in Central America especially for youth born during and just after the civil wars of the 80's and early 90's.

I actually feel that this is one of Mclaren's better selections.

All the talk about Heskey's record, who has a better reord.

Smith? Defoe?

At least he could get Owen going, which is all they need right now.

Them two you mention never get the opportunities Heskey get. Better to go with Crouch & Owen with Joe Cole behind. Pennant (in form) & Moore from AV even Young from AV should get a chance. Plus Wright Phillips look to be hitting form.

Latapy was we genius. The type of player every Trini love, for me it is a shame he did not make a bigger impact on the World stage at a club level. It would have been nice to see him in the EPL, La Liga or Seria A. None the less  :applause: :notworthy:

Man always have to jump on some sh#* that happen 500 years ago. We cannot control that. We can learn from it and fight to make sure it never happens again. Nah instead we living in anger and it boils over and leads to the same shi# 500yrs later. Black vs White, Black vs Black, Serb vs Bosnian, Manchu vs everybody else. What difference does it make? If it is black on black that make it acceptable? Bullshit!
All it was is what it is today control of power for the sake of financial gain (that includes religion).
We suppose to be advanced, intelligent and progressing. Yet we allow the same shit to happen all over the world, look at Darfur & Iraq. Yet here what we arguing about. It is all wrong. Right in we own yard that shit going on and we worried about facking England and USA.
Clean up & fight against all "ISMs" where ever it exist.

Football / Re: Malaysia Deny National Team Selection Based On Race
« on: August 02, 2007, 02:46:15 PM »

Philo I am not sure I agree. Look at Brazil 1958 starting line up. Garrincha, Pele, Didi, Nijalma Santos, Nilton Satos etc. A mixture of Brazilians of African, Mulatto and White

No doubt. Brazil has always had a multi-racial lineup. But it usually leaned towards being predominantly white in the past. There are periods in the past where the team looks more mixed than others but by mid 70s and 80s, the teams looked markedly more fair skinned...a sign of the times perhaps. Dunno

To your point about the 1958 team....Nilton Santos was white. When Brazil started the 1958 WC there were 8 starters who were white...Gilmar, De Sordi, Dino Sani, Bellini, Orlando, Joel, Mazzola and Zagallo. By the final, the team had changed a  bit but there were 7 white starters...Zito, Bellini, Nilton Santos, Orlando, Gilmar, Zagallo and Paulo Amaral.

Anyway, it has always been just an interesting observation to me. Today..the selecao looks very different from 20 years ago. That's true of many countries, but it's stranger for Brazil since, unlike European nations, Brazil has been a melting point for centuries.

peace

I would never say man like Zito white, both in the picture, back home dem is red man. Both players are mixed plus Amirildo was also in the squad. The team that play the final game in 58 had Zito, Pele, Garrincha, Didi, D. Santos & arguably Vava (mixed)  but we splitting  hairs. Look at the team in 66 Altair, D Santos, Lima, Garrincha, Jairzinho, Alcindo & Pele all was on one squad. I believe the whitest Brazil team was 74-78

This is the best Brazil's team defense has looked since..........ever

Is comments like dis does make me wonder if allyuh now sytart to watch football yuh know.

In 94....dey had Aldair, Marcio Santos, Jorginho, & Branco in defence wit Taffarel in goal and Mauro Silva jes in front a dem as de holding mid with Dunga.

Dat to me is de best defence Brazil ever had.  They played 7 matches in that tournament and conceded 3.

The 2002 edition had Lucio, Cafu, Edmilson, Roque Junior & Roberto Carlos as defenders with Gilberto Silva in front a dem as holding mid and Marcos in goal.  They weren't as good as the 94 edition in my opinion but they too played 7 games however conceded 4.

One thing about Brazilian defenders....they're ALL ball players.  Their wing backs are normally converted wingers.  Their defenders could be midfield generals in other teams (except that Marvin Andrews clone Junior Baiano of course).

People tend to say Brazilian defences are suspect yet, the statistics don't exactly show that.  Barring the 98 WC when they conceded 10 goals in their 7 matches, since & including the 82 WC in Spain, Brazil has played  39 matches.....scored 82 goals and conceded 28.  A goal difference of +54!

Germany in de same time period is de nex best.  They have played 45 matches......scored 78 goals and conceded 43.  A goal difference of +35

Italy...who many feel has the best defenders....in the same time frame has played 41 matches.....scored 60 goals and conceded 28.  A goal difference of +32

Italy is the only team to dat that has made it to the Final by conceding only 1 goal.  Brazil is next with 3 goals conceded along the way to the Final.

The statistics do not give merit to the reputation Brazilian defences have gotten.  They've conceded the same number of goals as Italy over the past 7 World Cups in 2 less games.

Brazil as a team has scored more goals and conceded the least (along with Italy) in that time period.  No wonder they have been and continue to be, the Kings of Football on this planet.

Agreed!!!!

"94 team is their best defense and is the model that Dunga is basing his team on.

How can you say that is the model. When Brazil gave up goals 5 goals in this 12 team tournament. In 1994 they gave up 3 goals in 2002 they gave up 4 goals, playing more games.

Like I alluded to earlier, the whole "big game" player is just ole talk....Like Palos said and Filho has proven it's not a technical definition.....and is based on subjectivity & selective memory

Some players appear to "rise to the occasion" more than others, but like I said, the factors affecting a player's performance in any game (big or small) are too many to narrow down to the magnitude or importance of the game alone....

Michael Jordan... Tiger Woods... Roger Federer... Brian Lara...

Do you know what these players have in common??

More often than not when the going gets tough they rise to the occasion.

You know exactly what is meant by the concept of a "big game" player but you have chosen the route of technicality to try to win this argument...

Every single sportsman fails at several points in their career... Have you ever seen Michael Jordan's Nike Ad? The one about "I missed so many game winning shots, I lost so many games, I failed so many times.. Because I fail I succeed"? This for me was one of the greatest advertisements ever made and epitomizes the consummate professional...

For me, a big game player is the one who leaves you with timeless memories of taking his team on his shoulder and leading them to glory when the going gets tough on repeated occasions.. I have these memories of the players above.. I DO NOT have these lasting memories of Thierry Henry or Riquelme and I also never referred to Ronaldo as a big game player... Now if you can show me where Henry took a game on his back and charged to glory a la Jordan, Lara, Gerrard or Woods, I will happily recant...

I feel you have made this discussion counter-productive by your approach just so you dont feel you lose an argument.. So best to leave it.. I know that you know and thats good enough for me..

just thinking why you did not stick to football and say Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo, Latapy

I think some of allyuh being a bit too harsh on the players. I dont know if its because allyuh r Arentina fans and r now looking for scapegoats.

Veron had an outstanding tournament and showed that he is still a top quality midfielder but allyuh still fighting him down. Messi lose the ball quite a few times yesterday too but he aint get blame. Argentina was just simply outplayed and out-coached yesterday.

Zanetti owned Robinho yesterday but nobody said that he(Robinho) is a shithong. Riquelme disappears whenever the game becomes fast and physical but he aint no shitong ent

Veron What! Sorry Veron was sentiment at best and he keep back poor Aimar from shining bright. Why the coach keep on Veron, and Requelme only he knows. Requelme was moving so slow half time they had to mow the grass where he was playing and the mower man had to say excuse me, because Requelme was afraid the Brazilian marker would of followed him to the dressing room. Argentina lose plenty plenty points with that performance. I sure you cannot buy a tomato in Argentina today, but if yuh want one check the airport when the plane land.
