Camp Nou Barcelona

For you Kicker
Real Madrid Club de Fútbol (also known as Los Putos Blancos), is a professional football club based in Madrid, Spain. Currently 5th in La Liga 9 points behind leaders Barcelona.

In 1943, in a match against Real Madrid, which Madrid won 11:1, the Barcelona players were threatened by the police in their changing room. Examples such as these show the important role that FC Barcelona has played in the lives of its supporters and the rivalry that has existed (still exists?) between Barca and other Spanish clubs, and not only in terms of sporting matters.

Barca route Valencia 4-0 (including a hat trick from Henry) and nary a mention on the board.
As if it isn't EPL it eh good.

Barcelona 4-0 Valencia

Thierry Henry netted a hat-trick as Barcelona beat Valencia 4-0 with an exhilarating exhibition of total football at the Nou Camp in the Primera Liga.

Henry gave Barcelona the lead with a fine lob after 19 minutes and added a second just short of the half-hour mark as the Catalans quickly took control of the game.

Dani Alves put Pep Guardiola's side three up just after the break and Henry completed his hat-trick late on to wrap up a highly impressive Barcelona win.

Barca saw second-placed Villarreal held to a draw at home to Getafe earlier and sensed the chance to open up a six-point lead at the top by beating Valencia, who began the day in third.

The Catalans dominated from the outset and Xavi almost gave the home side the lead after just two minutes when he beat Valencia goalkeeper Renan Brito, but saw his shot rebound off the post.

Barcelona continued to dominate after that and Renan did well to save from Alves after 18 minutes.

But a minute later, Guardiola's side took the lead.

Henry ran on to Yaya Toure's brilliant lofted pass from deep and lobbed a flailing Renan to put the Catalans in front.

The Brazilian goalkeeper perhaps should have done better, but Henry's finish was sublime.

The France striker had only this week complained that he was forced to run more than he ever did at Arsenal in order to fit in to Barcelona's attacking system.

But Guardiola publicly backed his striker by handing the Frenchman a starting role up front in place of the suspended Samuel Eto'o.

And Henry did not disappoint as he fired Barcelona into a 2-0 lead after 27 minutes.

Alves' long pass found Aleksander Hleb on the left-hand side of the box and the Belarus forward squared the ball intelligently to his former Arsenal colleague, who coolly slotted a right-footed shot past an exposed Renan for a precious two goal cushion.

And the home side never looked back after that.

Lionel Messi missed a one-on-one with Renan later in the half and Eidur Gudjohnsen was just off target in the lead-up to the interval.

Barcelona had to make do with a two-goal advantage at the break, but soon extended their lead when Xavi played in Alves and the Brazil full-back swept an angled shot past Renan.

Alves and Hleb both came close to adding a fourth goal as Guardiola's side continued to impress.

David Villa also missed a decent chance for Valencia, but the visitors were never really in the game and it was no surprise when Henry fired Barcelona into a four-goal lead to complete his hat-trick 12 minutes from time.

Alves was involved again, this time putting through substitute Bojan Krkic, who ran to the byline and pulled the ball back for the advancing Henry to finish easily.

It was the Frenchman's second competitive hat-trick since joining Barcelona last year and the former Arsenal man looked delighted when he received the match ball following the final whistle.

The comprehensive win sees Barcelona move six points clear of second-placed Villarreal and the Catalans will remain six points clear, even if fourth-placed Real Madrid beat Sevilla.

Valencia stay in third for now, but could drop to fourth on Sunday.

All this without Eto and Iniesta!

Bojan finally realise he do have to shoot from the most obscure angles he could pass the ball sometimes. Making the goal is just as important as scoring.

Fathers and husbands who openly hire assassins on the streets of the city are going unpunished

Authorities in the southern Iraqi city of Basra have admitted they are powerless to prevent 'honour killings' in the city following a 70 per cent increase in religious murders during the past year.

There has been no improvement in conviction rates for these killings. So far this year, 81 women in the city have been murdered for allegedly bringing shame on their families. Only five people have been convicted.

During 2007 the Basra security committee recorded 47 'honour killings' and three convictions. One lawyer in the city described how police were actively protecting perpetrators and said that a woman in Basra could now be murdered by hired hitmen for as little as $100 (£65).

The figures come despite international outrage which followed The Observer's coverage of the death of 17-year-old Rand Abdel-Qader, who was murdered by her father last April in an 'honour killing' after falling in love with a British soldier in Basra. The 4,000 British troops stationed in the city since the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003 withdrew to the airport last September.

Rand Abdel-Qader was killed after her family discovered that she had formed a friendship with a 22-year-old infantryman whom she knew as Paul. She was suffocated by her father then hacked at with a knife. Abdel-Qader Ali was subsequently arrested and released without charge.

Rand's mother, Leila Hussein, who divorced her husband after the killing, went into hiding but was tracked down weeks later and assassinated by an unknown gunman. Her husband had told The Observer that police had congratulated him for killing his daughter.

Seven months after the murders, the problem of these killings in Basra has become worse, according to lawyers. Ali Azize Raja'a, an Iraqi prosecutor who has represented the victims of 32 'honour killings' since 2004, said that, despite accumulating sufficient evidence to prove who was responsible in each murder, he had won only one case.

He said that the greatest issue was the decision by police to release suspects. Seven in 10 of those thought to be responsible for such a killing have left the city, with little attempt made to track them down.

The father of Rand is also understood to have left Basra. He was held by police in connection with his daughter's murder for only two hours. A local businessman who described the actions of Rand's father as 'courageous' is believed to have given a considerable sum of money to him and his two sons, who disowned their mother after she objected to Rand's killing. Raja'a said that when he was approached by Leila over Rand's case, his family was threatened by relatives.

Another Iraqi lawyer, who requested anonymity, said that some fathers had started to hire professional hitmen to carry out 'honour killings' which were then covered as 'sectarian murders'. He said: 'The life of these women isn't higher than $100. You can find a killer standing in any coffee shop of Basra, discussing prices of a life as if he was buying a piece of meat.'

Mariam Ayub Sattar, an activist in Basra, said that any woman caught speaking to a man in public who was not her husband or a relative was considered a prostitute and punished. A fortnight ago three women were burned with acid while walking through a market in Basra after stopping to speak to a male friend, Sattar said.

Nine of the 12 voluntary organisations helping women in Basra have closed down since the US-led invasion.

The Women's Rights Association in Basra was forced to close down after death threats were made following the murder of Rand's mother last May. Two women from a voluntary organisation who had been helping her to hide from her husband were also injured.

Alia'a Obeidi, the organisation's president, said that one of her colleagues was killed while driving to work and, fearing for her family's safety, she later moved to the Kurdish region in northern Iraq.

The Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights said that it was working on new projects to end gender discrimination in the country. 'We try to make a difference by teaching students at schools about gender equality, but it only will be possible when parents don't teach the opposite at home,' said Hameed Walled, senior official in the Ministry of Human Rights.

« on: November 26, 2008, 07:51:59 PM »
Check the glaring similarities between Jamaica and Trinidad when it comes to crime, politics and the awarding of lucrative government contracts. The article is a little long but good reading.

Politicians and the thugs they supported and used to secure power had had three decades to fine-tune their relationship. By this time, extortion and drug trafficking had become the main money earners for criminal gangs which had less need to feed directly from the political trough.

But there were still areas where gangsters aligned themselves to the dominant party in their garrison communities and, in the process, kept political order.

One gangster who amassed a massive fortune and whose criminal activities created a long list of murder victims was Donovan 'Bulbie' Bennett, former leader of the Spanish Town-based Clansman gang.

Bennett was shielded by politicians, despite the protests of a member of parliament.

Just after the December 1944 general elections, former Prime Minister and National Hero, Alexander Bustamante, set the stage for the 'dog eat dog' style of Jamaican politics when he rewarded his party's supporters with jobs, political favours and other scarce benefits.

Since then, the dogfight for political spoils has never ended.
Bulbie, who was born at King Street in the old capital of Spanish Town in 1964, emerged in the 1990s just as former member of parliament for South Central St Catherine, Heather Robinson, was asked to serve in that constituency by the PJ Patterson-led People's National Party.

During that period, Bulbie was a party strongman, who carried out the bidding of PNP candidate for Central St Catherine, Clinton 'Jingles' Davy, who eventually lost in his bid to unseat incumbent member of parliament, Bruce Golding.

Bulbie was Davy's head honcho who kept order in PNP-aligned communities in the constituency before and after the March 1993 general elections.

Before those elections, a returning officer for South St Catherine was attacked and shot dead. Police say Bulbie and his cronies were suspected to be behind that murder.

When the votes were counted, Robinson had won her seat, but Davy lost by a landslide to Golding. However, victory would prove bittersweet for Robinson when Bulbie and his cronies attached themselves to her political team and began to make several demands.

After summoning the member of parliament to a meeting, Bulbie reportedly told Robinson that his ambition was to be the only don in Spanish Town and its environs. Bulbie reportedly threatened several senior members of the party who were also at the meeting, which was held at Robinson's constituency office, when he said, "All old don ago dead".

Out of concern for her party workers, Robinson called up Davy and asked him to intervene and rein in Bennett. But to Robinson's surprise, her request would be met with a cold response from her former colleague who reportedly told her, "If you won't feed them, I will".

Just days after the meeting, Bulbie and his Clansmen made good on his promise and murdered a popular party worker who worked closely with Robinson.

But it was the murder of Derrick Eccleston, also called 'Puppy String', that brought Bulbie under the police microscope.
Police say Bulbie gained leadership of the Clansman gang after he and three of his cronies launched a gun attack in the PNP enclave of De La Vega City on Eccleston and a group of persons with whom he was conversing. The attack was the third attempt on Eccleston's life, and this time Bulbie and his gang were successful. After shooting and wounding Eccleston, Bulbie reportedly went over the wounded man and pumped several shots into him.

After that killing, Bulbie was listed as wanted for murder. His three cronies who had gone with him into De La Vega City that night were held by police and were later convicted and given lengthy prison terms after being found guilty in the High Court.

The men were convicted after an eyewitness gave evidence which implicated Bulbie and his cronies. But Bulbie was never held by the police and continued to trod on his path of destruction and death.

At the time of his death in October 2005, police say they linked Bulbie to at least 80 murders.

Among those killed by Bulbie and his cronies were a number of PNP workers who worked for the bewildered Robinson. At the time the former politician threatened to resign after accusing a PNP councillor of colluding with Bulbie and facilitating garrison politics.

While her workers were being killed like flies, Robinson appealed to her colleagues in Parliament to dismantle tribalism and dismantle the power base of the dons. In an impassioned plea, Robinson told Parliament that she would not hug up criminals and was not able to give birth to a 'don'.

"In that regard I am truly barren," Robinson said in the famous speech in Gordon House. "Are there any of us in this House who would dare to go to the constituency that they represent and declare to these number one dons or now super predators, that we are finished with them and no longer need their services?"
She also hit out at the old style of politics.

"Some of the old dogs in our Parliament need to be taught new approaches," she also said.

But Robinson would come in for a rude awakening as her plea was met with a stony silence and fell on deaf ears. Instead of supporting their colleague in the drive to clean up the political landscape, the politicians ostracised Robinson and treated her like a traitor. In short she got no help and was left out on a limb.
Weeks after that speech, when it was clear that no action would be taken, Robinson resigned from her position in Parliament in May 1996 after three years in the position.

Bulbie, in the meantime, stuck to his goal and continued building his evil empire by snuffing out his rivals and expanding the turf of his Clansman gang.

Soon the Clansman gang would set up bases in Old Harbour, Dam Head, Linstead and other areas of St Catherine and Clarendon.

By the turn of the millennium, Bennett's criminal empire was worth millions, as he and his gang built a massive extortion racket which targeted fearful business owners and taxi drivers. The main centre of the extortion, according to police, was and still is the Spanish Town municipal bus park.

At the time Bulbie was now a permanent fixture on the police most wanted list, a spot he occupied for the last decade of his life.
But Bulbie's rise to the top of the dung heap of criminality was not unhindered, as a bitter fight for extortion rights erupted between his PNP-aligned Clansmen and the One Order gang, which supports the Jamaica Labour Party.

The war which ensued resulted in hundreds of lives being snuffed out on both sides of the conflict. While the Clansman has bases in the Rivoli, Lime Tree Grove, Lakes Pen, Jones Avenue, Manchester Avenue, Dam Head, Waterford and Fish Ground communities, the One Order gang's bases included Tawes Pen, Ellerslie Pen, Dempshire Pen, Shelter Rock and Oxford Road.

By this time, Bulbie was the beneficiary of a multitude of government contracts, even though he was a wanted man. Like most infamous criminals before him, Bulbie had eyes and ears in the security forces and managed to elude many police dragnets.
In 2001, police suspect that he briefly fled from authorities in Kingston to Great Britain under a false identity.

But like most before him, Donovan 'Bulbie' Bennett would not live to a ripe old age and enjoy the benefits of his ill-gotten gains.
On October 30, 2005, the security forces swooped down on a palatial residence the nation's most wanted man had built in the rustic district of Tanaky nestled in the hills of Clarendon.

The police say as they approached the house they were fired on, and during a shoot-out, Bennett and his driver, identified only as 'Nathan', were killed.

Police say they found Bulbie cl**tching a .50 Desert Eagle pistol, which is valued at US$2,000 and a Ruger pistol from his driver. A quantity of cash and a large cache of jewellery were also found in the house.

At the time of his death, Bulbie's wealth was estimated at over $100 million.

Days after Bulbie's death, the head of the St Catherine Central police division, Superintendent Kenneth Wade, blasted PNP politicians for assisting Bennett who, he said, was given political support and supplied with information while he operated in areas dominated by the party.

During the days following his death, members of Bulbie's gang and persons who were loyal to him rioted by blocking roads, firing on the Spanish Town Police Station and burning T-shirts with the image of former National Security Minister Dr Peter Phillips.

General Discussion / Shower Posse for 'American Gangster'
« on: November 04, 2008, 03:22:12 PM »
THE STORY of Jamaica's notorious Shower Posse will be told in the new season of Black Entertainment Television's (BET) gripping crime series, American Gangster.

A statement on BET's website said the second season of Ameri-can Gangster begins October 23, with the Shower Posse scheduled as its fourth episode.

'Shower' leader Vivian Blake, currently serving a life sentence in American prison, was interviewed for the piece which is narrated by actor Ving Rhames.

History

Blake was sentenced to 28 years in federal prison in June 2000 in a Miami Federal Court. He had been indicted there 12 years earlier, but American authorities said he fled to Jamaica.

He and other members of the Shower Posse were given lengthy sentences based on 52 charges brought by federal prosecutors. These included racketeering, smuggling and distributing marijuana and cocaine from The Bahamas through the United States.

The Shower Posse, which was a strong supporter of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), was also implicated in more than 1,000 murders in the United States (US). The Feds said they operated lucrative illegal drug rings in Miami, New York City, Philadelphia and Virginia.

Blake was raised in west Kingston, an area that has backed the JLP in general elections since the 1960s. He attended St George's College, where he passed three GCE subjects, but went to the US in 1972 on a football scholarship.

He was one of the Shower Posse's founders, reportedly ruling it with an iron hand. They were regarded as one of America's most dangerous gangs during the 1980s when the narcotics trade was booming in that country's urban centres.

The Shower Posse's rise and fall is chronicled in The Shower Posse: The Most Notorious Jamaican Crime Organisation, a 2003 book written by Blake's son, Duane.

American Gangster premiered on BET in 2007. It features once powerful African-American criminals, such as Stanley 'Tookie' Williams (former leader of the Crips in Los Angeles, California), and Harlem heavyweights Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes.

.1M ROBBERY
Bandits spray guards with pepper sauce outside bank, make off with guns and cash

Richard Charan South Bureau

Tuesday, August 5th 2008

In a daring robbery yesterday three men threw pepper sauce in the faces of two security guards then stole their guns and three bags stuffed with more than $.1 million that they were about to take to a bank.

The suspects, who police said carefully planned the robbery and escape, pulled off the heist around 5 p.m. outside the Lower High Street branch of Republic Bank, in San Fernando.

Dozens of people witnessed the incident, and a police patrol was a street away, but up to late last night, the robbers were at large.

The men were reported to have thrown what was later identified as pepper sauce in the eyes of the guards and when they began screaming, they were disarmed and robbed.

Police were told that three men wearing three-quarter length pants and t-shirts pulled up outside the bank in a silver coloured B-15 Sentra. They stepped into the bank's ATM enclosure, a tinted cubicle that allows customers to see the layout of most of the bank.

The men were said to have stayed in the ATM until two guards, officers of the Sentinel Security Company, left the bank and went to their vehicle to get the money and cheques.

The bank closes at 2 p.m., but there is a department called the Central Processing Centre that is staffed, where late deposits coming from businesses in and around San Fernando, are made.

The security company's van was impounded at the police station last night.

The getaway car was last seen at King's Wharf, headed towards the Embacadere Housing Development.

Senior Superintendent Gopiechand Ganga was spearheading the search.

During Christmas 2002, Republic Bank was victim of one of the biggest robberies in the country's history, when $5 million was stolen in an armored car hijacking while headed to the bank's High Street San Fernando branch.

Two years earlier there was a multi-million dollar robbery outside the Lower High Street branch.

Crime triggering Incest!
BY ERICA VIRTUE Sunday Observer writer virtuee@jamaicaobserver.com
Sunday, August 03, 2008

Walled in by crime and violence in some of Jamaica's violent inner cities, men and women answering nature's call for sex and companionship have turned to blood relatives - in some cases fathers to daughters, brothers to sisters and even mothers to their sons, the Sunday Observer has learnt.

While the scale of the incest was not immediately ascertained, local officials say they have seen this worrying behaviour in at least four violent communities.

"It is heart-breaking," chairman of the Trench Town-based Caribbean Applied Technology Centre, Dr Henley Morgan, told the Sunday Observer. "There were areas in the inner cities where violence has forced individuals within a 30 square feet radius to remain there for years. They cannot go up the lane, down the lane or anywhere else because of violence. The end result is this heart-breaking situation."

Explaining further, Dr Morgan said, "The males have never left it (their communities) to find a girl. So they prey on each other. It is an unending web, and sometimes we read about this happening elsewhere and think it cannot happen here..."

Renowned social anthropologist specialising in social violence, Dr Herbert Gayle, corroborated Dr Morgan's story and said the practice wasn't only among fathers and daughters, or brothers and sisters.

"There are cases where mothers have turned to their sons, because their husbands or spouses are in prison and they go to her sons to fulfil her sexual needs..." Dr Gayle disclosed in an interview with Sunday Observer.

He said mothers have often expressed concerns for their girls, especially when there are sustained curfews in the inner cities.

"I am aware of it. We have never had a case to deal with it at Fathers Inc, but there are at least four communities where there are just too many instances of this happening," Dr Gayle said.

In at least one instance, he said, a man is still in prison for impregnating his underaged daughter.

Morgan's and Gayle's accounts were confirmed by a senior crime fighter who has worked the inner cities for more than a quarter century.

For him, the situation is nauseating.

"I have come across situations where during the investigation of a crime, you find everybody with the same surname. In one instance I interviewed 30 persons and they all have the same surnames," the cop said in an earlier interview with Sunday Observer. "They were brothers, sisters, cousins and friends. It got to a point where you say 'wait a minute, what is happening here?' Only to retrace your steps to find that they are all family in the sickest kind of ways...

"It is just sickening..." he said, clearly uncomfortable discussing the issue.

According to the cop, who asked for anonymity, when he stumbled on the situation, it had a chilling effect on him.

"They are the product of the same lineage, and this cannot be good for any country and any community. Can you just imagine the maladjustments of this generation of young people?" he asked.

In some communities, according to a social worker, there are real and imaginary lines across which residents can go, but still remain safe. However, there are sections referred to as "no man's land" and individuals caught in these areas are at the mercy of gunmen.

It is situations such as this that have barred residents from one end of a street, sections of communities or areas within close proximity from interfacing with each other.

"This is well known. We know this already. I work in an inner-city community and this is something I know very well." Dr Morgan said.

The veteran cop also pointed to another deeply troubling practice in these inner-city communities.

Criminal dons, claiming to be community benefactors, have, for years, demanded sexual favours from young inner city girls, some of whom they have assisted in going to school. In some instances, as soon as the girls reach puberty the dons 'send' for them for their sexual initiation.

The little girls are sometimes gone for days and are sexually assaulted. According to the cop, it is not just anecdotal, there are enough stories. His disappointment, however, and that of his colleagues, is fuelled by the failure of relatives of the abused girls to file complaints and force official investigations.

"The police face a dilemma. Oftentimes we do not have a case. There are no complainants to a crime. There are those who will say the police have a responsibility to act, yes we do. But when you have unwilling relatives, parents included, who will deny it, what do you do?" he asked in exasperation.

Dr Gayle said it was a common violation.

"That is so common. There are so many stories and actual cases. I had to insist to a don that I do not want to be in his company if he was going to be having sex with underaged girls..." Dr Gayle told the Sunday Observer.

The social anthropologist, who is an authority on social violence, has done extensive research with at least 12 gangs across 40 inner-city communities and has won his local and international recognition for his body of work.

His insistence, he said, caused the don to call a meeting of his 'shottas' and "tell them that the girl must be at least 16 years".

"That is still sexual assault," Dr Gayle fumed.

HE argued that the police have lost their legitimacy to the dons in the inner cities and while he sympathised with the cops, he said, "if the residents were not willing to report murders, it was unlikely that they were going to report incest".

He said the status and stock of the dons are closely linked to the number of children they sire, irrespective of their contribution to the lives of the children once they are born.

Some families have opted to relocate in a bid to evade the ravaging of their young female members.

However, for some adult women, it is a status symbol.

Women have been known to give their bodies to the dons as a means of financial support in communities with high unemployment.

In modern societies, victims are able to access public psychiatric assistance in a bid to heal. According to the veteran cop, "Here (in Jamaica) people suffer in silence, and even more worrying is that the tragedy is repeated over and over again."

Dr Gayle said there was hope, as even the crudest form of social intervention is appreciated in some communities, and has borne fruit.

For Morgan, too, there is hope.

"Despite the horror, some beautiful flowers (men and women) have bloomed in our inner cities," he said.

General Discussion / Zimbabwe slashes ten zeros off its currency
« on: July 30, 2008, 09:50:13 AM »

Pictures of Zimbabweans paying for a loaf of bread with sacks full of cash may be a thing of the past as the government slashes ten zeros from the currency.

Zimbabwe’s astronomical levels of inflation, which have crippled the country’s economy and made basic goods unaffordable, will be artificially deflated when the currency is revalued next month.

Gideon Gono, governor of the central bank said today: “The Zimbabwe dollar will be redenominated by a factor of one to 10, which means we are removing ten zeros from our monetary value. Ten billion [Zimbabwean] dollars today will be reduced to one dollar effective from August 1.”

The move is unlikely to end Zimbabwe's financial woes, however, and the country’s economic nose-dive is expected to continue unabated.

Similar previous attempts to rescue Zimbabwe’s inflation levels from the stratosphere have failed. In 2006, the central bank slashed three zeros from the currency when inflation stood at a few hundred percent, already the highest rate in the world.

Inflation is now officially pegged at 2.2 million per cent a year but independent analysts estimate it to be closer to 12.5 million per cent, making it almost impossible to withdraw cash.

Mr Gono also indicated that he will raise the daily amount that Zimbabweans are allowed to take out from their bank accounts.

“I am, therefore, very confident that this coming week will bring about the much needed relief in our national payment system,” Gono said.

Zimbabwean trade unions wrote an open letter to the central bank governor last week describing the current cap of Z$100bn as "a joke" with transport to and from banks costing on average Z$150bn.

Businesses in the capital Harare have been driven into the ground by the crisis as goods are priced beyond reach of even the wealthiest. The readjustment will bring a dramatic drop in the face value of goods but will do little to alleviate the suffering for millions in the country.

United Nations agencies say failed crops and a drop of nearly 50 per cent in maize imports have left 2 million people in urgent need of help. This figure is expected to leap to 5 million people – more than half of the population - by year.

Thabo Mbeki, South African President will meet President Robert Mugabe in Harare today to discuss the crisis in Zimbabwe.

Mr Mbeki held talks with Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in Pretoria yesterday. He also plans to meet Arthur Mutambara, head of a breakaway faction of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), he said.

Talks on Zimbabwe’s political crisis broke up yesterday as negotiators flew home to resolve a deadlock over power-sharing between Mr Mugabe and his rival, Tsvangirai. But Mr Mbeki insisted discussions were still on track, despite talk of a deadlock by the MDC.

In a televised address today, Mr Mugabe insisted that negotiations with the opposition on a power-sharing government were continuing. He said that “we want to succeed”, but warned that “sometimes compromise is difficult.”

General Discussion / Beijing takes dog off the menu for Olympics
« on: July 11, 2008, 09:02:39 AM »
BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.

Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.

A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.

Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries."

The directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu.

Criticism from Westerners caused the dog meat-loving South Koreans to ban canine dishes for a period of time during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Football / European Championship History: Germany
« on: May 19, 2008, 08:06:43 AM »
Ah padna I went to school with wrote an article on Germany and got it posted on goal.com.

Germany have a good claim to being the most celebrated football nation in the world. True, Brazil and Italy both have won more world cups with five and four respectively, but overall the Germans' record in the World Cup reads as finalists seven times and winner on three occasions. But, it is in the European Championship where Germans have reigned supreme.

The Mannschaft have appeared in five European finals, and have won three. Their most prominent period of superiority was in the glorious 70’s into the 80’s when they appeared in an unprecedented three straight European Championship finals, winning all of them.

But despite their success, there is checkered past and present. The Germans as a nation have only really participated in four tournaments, those of course being from 1992 onwards, as Germany was only reunified as a nation in 1990. In all the previous incarnations of the tournament, the German black, red and gold was waved by either the East or West Germans.

Early years

The first three tournaments, from 1960 to 1968, saw the East Germans knocked out in the latter stage of qualifying. The tournaments back then only featured four teams in the actual finals competition proper.

The glorious 70s and 80s

It was in this era that West Germany truly made their mark on the football world. In this period the Germans would claim two European Championships and one World Cup, featuring in six finals of major international tournaments in total. At the European Champonship in 1972 West Germany were represented by the legendary contingent from Bayern Munich, who subsequently dominated the European Cup in the coming years.

The Mannschaft in the '72 Euros featured such illustrious names as Beckenbauer, Bonhof, Brietner, Heynckes, Uli Hoeness, Maier, Muller, Netzer, Vogts who would all go one to become legends in the game as a player and later as coaches. The '72 tournament only featured four teams in the final stages in Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Russia and the host. The final would pit the free scoring Gerd Muller led Germans against a very powerful Russian squad who were also making quite the name for themselves, having being ever present in previous tournaments. The final saw Germany run out as 3-0 winners, with Gerd Muller grabbing two and finishing as the tournament's top scorer, with four in total.

The 76 version again saw just four teams reach the final stages in Yugoslavia. The top scorer went by the familiar name of Muller, but it was Dietmar, as opposed to the legendary Gerd. Germany would go on to lose the final on penalties after a climatic 2-2 draw, after only equalizing in the 89th minute. Uli Hoeness was the unlucky kicker, and when Mansy scored for Yugoslavia, Germany were forced to give up their title.

Italy 1980 saw the tournament take on a more familiar group stage from which the semi-finalists would emerge. The 1980 Germany team contained some legends of the game. One such man, Karl Heinze Rummenigge (later to be crowned 1980 European player of the year) led the Germans to the final against Belgium, where two goals from Horst Hrubesch saw them reclaim the title. Germany’s 1980 squad was made up of Rummenigge, Ulli Stielike, Schumacher, Felix Magath, Hrubesch, Bonhof, Allos, Briegel and of course the emergence of a young sensations Lothar Matthaus, and the controversial Bernd Schuster. Klaus Allofs was the tournament's top scorer with three goals.

The tournment in 1984 was held in France and was, by all accounts, Platini’s tournament, as he top scored with a resounding nine goals. Despite coming in as second favourites and reigning champions, in addition to making the previous World Cup's final, Germany fell at the group stage to a 90th minute Maceda goal against the Spaniards, who would go on to lose to France in the final.

West Germany hosted the 1988 tournament, and they were heavy favourites following yet another World Cup run that saw them through to the final, where they fell against Argentina. Coached by Franz Beckenbauer, the German squad boasted a powerful line up, most of which would go on to win Italia 90. The team was comprised of Lothar Matthaus, Littbarski, Brehme, Guido Buchwald, Ruid Voller and young guns Bodo Ilgner and Jurgen Klinsmann. However the dreams of title celebrations at home were not to be, as the Manschafft went out to a Marco Van Basten Goal in the 88th minute in Hamburg. The Dutch would go on to win, with Van Basten finishing as top scorer.

The new Germany

Germany enjoyed reunification as a nation in late 1990, and it was widely believed that the new-look Nationalelf would go on to conquer all, as a more powerful single entity. Euro 92 in Sweden had a controversial start, with CIS representing the recently disbanded USSR and Yugoslavia (as they were then known) being disqualified due to the civil war. Germany came into Euro 92 as world champions and were heavily favoured to take the tournament. again featuring such star names as Klinsmann, Brehme, Jurgen Kohler, Ilgner, Voller, Worns, Hassler, youngsters Stefan Effenberg, Andreas Moller, and the East German prodigy Matthais Sammer.

After negotiating a difficult group where they once again crashed to their now arch-enemies Holland, the Germans would go on to face the host Sweden in the semis, where they ran out 3-2 winners. In the final they were to face the tournaments surprise package and Yugoslavia’s last minute replacement, Denmark. Two goals from Jensen and then Vilfort got the better of the world champions, who had to settle for second place yet again.

Euro 96 was heralded as 'football coming home' as the host nation England celebrated their first hosting of the festival. The tournament now took on a different approach as they were two additional knock out stages to accommodate 16 teams, split into four groups. Euro 96 saw the emergence of Zidane, Suker, Poborsky, Djordaeff, Rui Costa and Pavel Nedved but it was the Germans now captained by Jurgen Kilinsmann who would go on to conquer.

Placed in the group of death, Germany topped the group ahead of the Czechs, Russia and Italy. Along the way they were ravaged by injury, but were still bravely led by the majestic Matthais Sammer who excelled in his role as sweeper (he would later be named European footballer of the year). Germany would knock out the host in the semis after a penalty shoot out and it took the first ever Golden Goal by second half substitute Oliver Bierhoff to win the trophy against the tournament's surprise package, the Czechs. Germany was represented by, Ziege, Sammer, Klinsmann, Bierhoff, Kohler, Moller, Reuter, Mehmet Scholl, Markus Babbel, and tournament revelation Dieter Eilts from Bremen.

The turn of the Century

It was in the 2000s where Germany would endure their darkest days in the tournaments. In both the Euro 2000 in Belgium and Holland and Euro 2004 in Portugal, Germany would go out in the group stage. In-fighting as well as under-confidence in coach Erich Ribbeck in the 2000 tournament, saw Germany score just one goal, off the boot of Mehmet Scholl against Romania. They then went on to lose to England before getting thumped on their way out 3-0 by the Figo-inspired Portugal. Despite having the likes of Oliver Kahn, Jens Jeremies, Dietmar Hamann and Michael Ballack in their squad, Germany were nothing short of embarrassing and were disgraced by their performances. Ribbeck eventually lost his job and many players were dropped, never to be heard from at international level again. The tournament's top scorer was one Patrick Kluivert who finished on five, as the French took the title.

Euro 2004 saw the hosts Portugal come in as heavy favourites alongside Holland and France. The Germans, despite being runners-up in the World Cup two years earlier, were not considered to be amongst the continents elite. Coached by Rudi Voller, Germany was represented by World Cup finalists Kahn, Jeremies, Ballack, Frings, Schneider, Linke, Ziege and Klose but went out tamely after a 0-0 draw with Latvia, and then getting beaten by a Czech second eleven, 2-1. The Greeks went on to win the tournament coached ironically by German Otto Rehhagel, who was over-looked for the job of the manager of the Mannshaft years earlier.

It should be noted that Germany have not won a European Championship game in the last two tournaments. Their last win coming in Euro 96, this year, however they are heavy favourites to continue where the Klinsmann-led Mannshaft left off after finishing third in the 2006 World Cup on home soil. Led now by Joachim Low with over 12 players expected to continue from that promising tournament, the Germans are recognized to be a huge threat this time around, only time will tell.

Football / Thanks for cleaning my boots...have a $60,000 Mercedes
« on: May 14, 2008, 09:10:22 AM »
After a season shadowing a star footballer, a lucky boot boy might find himself the recipient of some souvenir kit. Or maybe even a pair of the player's old boots.

James McPike got a Mercedes.

The football trainee, who had been assigned to Birmingham City midfielder Olivier Kapo, was stunned when he was thrown the keys of the £30,000 car and told to keep it.

He told him he would struggle to afford the insurance for such an expensive car.

So the French international drove the disbelieving 20-year-old to his home, handed him the spare keys and log book, and then insisted on paying for a year's insurance.

It is believed to be the biggest gift ever given to a boot boy, a type of "football apprentice" who learns the ropes from a senior player and is meant to help out in return.

Looking after the boots used to be a big part of the job, although the role is a little less defined these days

A club source said James, who signed a professional contract with Birmingham City on his 17th birthday, had asked Kapo for a pair of boots to mark the end of the season.

"He was obviously disappointed when Kapo replied he had taken them home with him," the source said. "He perked up considerably when he was tossed a set of keys."

Kapo, 27, who is on a £1.5milliona-year contract at the recently relegated club, is said to have bought the Mercedes as a "run around" when he arrived in Birmingham last year.

He also has a Porsche and a Hummer.

Although top players command multi-million pound salaries, apprentice players are still relatively lowly paid. James is thought to be on about £300 a week.

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish said he learned of Kapo's generosity only when he saw James driving the Mercedes out of the training ground yesterday.

"It was a magnificent gesture and one that's entirely in keeping with Kapo's character," he said.

"He's been in Italy with Juventus, one of the biggest clubs in the world, but he clearly has not forgotten the time when he was an aspiring professional himself, hoping to go on to bigger and better things.

"As he was in such a generous mood, I asked him what he had done with the house he had left behind in Turin. Unfortunately, he smiled and said he wanted to keep hold of that."

http://www.money.co.uk/article/10003...uy-hookers.htm

A 13 year old boy from Texas is convicted of fraud after using his Father's credit cards to hire escorts.
A 13 year old from Texas who stole his Dad's credit card and ordered two hookers from an escort agency, has today been convicted of fraud and given a three year community order.

Ralph Hardy, a 13 year old from Newark, Texas confessed to ordering an extra credit card from his father's existing credit card company, and took his friends on a $30,000 spending spree, culminating in playing "Halo" on an Xbox with a couple of hookers in a Texas motel.

The credit card company involved said it was regular practice to send extra credit cards out as long as all security questions are answered.

The escort girls who were released without charge, told the arresting officers something was up when the kids said they would rather play Xbox than get down to business.

Police said they were alerted to the motel by a concerned delivery clerk, whom after delivering supplies of Dr Pepper, Fritos and Oreos had been asked by the kids where they could score some chicks and were willing to pay. They explained they had just made a big score at a "World of Warcraft" tournament and wanted to get some relaxation. On noting the boys age the delivery clerk informed the authorities.

When police arrived at the motel they found $3,000 in cash, numerous electronic gadgets, an Xbox video console with numerous games, and the two local escort girls.

Ralph had reportedly told police that his father wouldn't mind, as it was his birthday last week and he had forgot to get him a present. The father, a lawyer said he had been too busy, but would take him on a surprise trip to Disneyland instead.

Asked why he ordered two escorts, Ralph said he thought it was the thing to do when you win a "World of Warcraft" tournament. They told the suspicious working girls they were people of restricted growth working with a traveling circus, and as State law does not allow those with disabilities to be discriminated against they had no right to refuse them.

The $1,000 a night girls sensing something up played "Halo" on the Xbox with the kids, instead of selling their sexual services.

Ralph's ambition is to one day become a politician.

Football / Reality show to find next Beckham or Ronaldo
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:18:05 PM »
A new reality television show along the lines of hit singing series American Idol is to be launched to find the next global football superstar.

Titled "SportStar Football," the show will be a worldwide hunt for the next big thing in soccer, organisers said Thursday.

The concept is the brainchild of David Edwards, who was behind "RockStar: INXS," the search for a new lead singer for the Australian band whose former frontman Michael Hutchence committed suicide.

ESPN STAR Sports and Imagine OmniMedia will work together to develop, produce and broadcast what they tout as the first reality-based football entertainment series in Asia.

"We are committed to serving our fans by providing them unique opportunities to engage with their favourite sports across platforms," said ESPN STAR Sports managing director Manu Sawhney.

"With this interactive and entertaining initiative, football fans will have a lot more to look forward to in days to come."

No details of a launch date, nor how the series would be structured, were announced.

General Discussion / Grand Theft Auto 4 - with a lil Trini Flavour
« on: May 05, 2008, 11:20:54 AM »

Got my copy of Grant Theft Auto 4 on Friday and to my surprise on the Massive B station our own Bunji Garlin has a song. The song is Brrrrrrt.

There is a lot of Caribbean music probably due to the fact that Liberty City is really New York City. There is a Dancehall Station and a Tuff Gong station with only Bob and Damian Marley.

I think it will get game of the year as the game play is sick and no 2 players will have the same experience.
