other series to keep you busy during the summer...

Peak Binders
Fargo
Those Who Kill Us
Ray Donovan (into 2nd season soon)

and I'm trying to stay focused on Dominion... low budget making it hard to take seriously.

General Discussion / Dana Seetahal murdered
« on: May 04, 2014, 01:51:53 AM »
Source: http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/BREAKING-NEWS---Dana-Seetahal-murdered-257834591.html

   By Alexander Bruzual

At about 12:05 a.m. senior counsel Dana Seetahal was in her Volkswagen SUV proceeding north along Hamilton-Holder street, Woodbrook when upon reaching the vicinity of the Woodbrook Youth Club two vehicles pulled alongside her causing her to come to a stop.

One of the vehicles, a Nissan Wingroad, then drove ahead a short distance and pulled across the road, blocking it. The other vehicle which was described as a panel van pulled alongside and the occupants of that vehicle pulled out their firearms and opened fire on the SUV.

The two vehicles then sped off and made good their escape.

Residents of the area, on hearing the gunshots contacted the police and emergency health services. However, despite their swift response, when they arrived the senior counsel and Express columnist was dead --- slumped along her driver's seat.

The first responders notified their seniors and a party of officers including ACP Wayne Dick, Senior Superintendent Ishmael David, Acting ASP Williams, Inspector Thomas, Inspector Veronique,
Inspector Lawrence, and Inspector Rampersad, among others, visited the scene.

Crime scene investigators recovered several 5.62 shells at the scene.

Police are currently working on two theories as a result of this killing. The first, and most prominent, is that because of the nature of the incident it was a "hit" arising out of the Senior Counsel's involvement in the Vindra Naipaul-Coolman case.

The other theory is that she allegedly was on her way home after spending some time in a casino. Up to moments ago officers were said to be still at the casino conducting inquiries.

Ag Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams, when contacted by the Express a short time ago, said he was shocked.

"It's shocking. Crime is a concern especially violent crime. It's a shocking incident, one you least expect.

"I had a conversation with her at around 12.45 pm on Saturday and everything was fine.

"We need to work as a country together", Williams said.

The top cop said he had been apprised of the killing, and head of Homicide ACP Wayne Dick has been in constant communication with him.

Williams assured there will be a thorough investigation, and that his officers are on the scene doing a basic investigation.

Shadow - Winston Bailey, considered the only living philosopher-calypsonian..."Unlike our numerous social commentators who comment on particular and specific events and issues of a political or socio-economic nature, Shadow contemplates natural phenomena and man's relations to the universe. It explains why his approach to most topics: poverty, pressure, friendship, honesty, jealousy, survival, truth, human rights etc and, mind you, all these are titles of actual Shadow calypsoes, signifies that tendency of philosophers to be abstract rather than concrete in their treatment of subject matter." 'Callaloo: The Melting Pot' is the story of Indians living in Trinidad and Tobago, a multi-ethnic, multi-racial nation in the Southern Caribbean, which is inhabited by a diverse set of people, marred by a painful history of imperialism, slavery and migration. A riveting mix of assorted cultures, the place upholds a highly globalized, yet indigenous identity that is critical to its growing collaboration with India in various sectors of development. The film explores the socio-cultural vibrancy of Trinidad and Tobago's Indian diaspora and its indispensable contribution to the evolution of the nation and its economy and culture. The film also looks at the growing potential for investment and commerce with India, with which, it is also bound by a myriad cultural influences in art, music, fashion, films and food.

General Discussion / Canadian Based - Westjet.
« on: September 16, 2012, 04:44:04 AM »
Ladies and gents not sure if you all already know, but westjet (http://www.westjet.com) now fly to Trinidad. Cost me about $250 less than Caribbean airlines for the carnival season. My sister booked 2 weeks back and it was $350 less than Caribbean airlines at that time. 40 lb limit and no inservice meal, but at least we have more options now. Additionally, if you've never flown with westjet before, I've found their service to be good.

BTW, you can also ask your travel agent about flights with Canjet (can't make a booking on their website). Supposedly they're also flying to Trinidad now.

One of the good thing about westjet is that you can cancel your flight up to 2 hrs prior to departure. You'll get a credit for another flight (within the yr), and you only lose $50 off your original ticket price. Plus you can also transfer tickets from one name to another if you want (have to be in the same family..I think).

I try to be patriotic, but is like Caribbean airlines want us to pay for their purchase of Air Jamaica (ridiculous prices on flights from toronto). So I say.. eff them.

General Discussion / Brazil bags a bargain
« on: September 13, 2012, 07:57:19 AM »
Saw this in the latest issue of Ships Monthly (September) (found a link online for you guys to check out if interested).

The Brazilian Navy has accepted the first of three Ocean Patrol Vessels from BAE Systems. The warship was handed over at Portsmouth on 29 June and renamed Amazonas (P120). Prior to delivery, 80 Brazilian sailors conducted two days of sea trials to familiarise themselves with the 90m OPV which, although already repainted in Brazilian colours, was still running under her original name of Port of Spain. Transfer of the Glasgow-built pair, Scarborough and San Fernando, will take place later this year and early in 2013, when they will be renamed Apa (P121) and Araguaia (P122), after national rivers.

The ships were originally built for the Trinidad & Tobago Coast Guard, but the order was cancelled in 2010 following a change of government when the vessels were close to completion. Brazil later acquired them for £133 million, a sum that also includes ancillary support services and a manufacturing licence to enable further vessels of the same class to be constructed in Brazil.

General Discussion / You voted for them - Share your thoughts.
« on: August 23, 2012, 08:03:50 AM »
Had a discussion last night with a friend about "government" in Trinbago, compared to other places.

I've seen it countless times here and it had me thinking. Why is it when shit happens (crime, flooding, unjust layoffs..etc) in trinidad and Tobago, you tend to hear "you voted for them.. take it in your tail now". It could be PNM, UNC, PP whoever the next set of clowns are. It's as if one thinks by not voting for said party in power, the problems are not theirs. Are we forgetting that this is democracy at it's best? Forget which party you're affiliated with and take notice that it's not "their" problem for putting them there.

In Canada for example, when shit happens it's "our" problem and not a party affiliation problem.

Is this just another one of those things where as citizens we don't take ownership off? This is our country, so it's our problem and not a gauge to match with political party will fackup the country more.

here are some common bs statements...

* I didn't vote for them
* I had no other reasonable choice
* lesser of 2 evils

The country is falling apart and like ti or not, it's our problem.

Listening to Trinbago radio online and everyone who called in (shoutouts), seem to have some sort of "Banton" name.. banton this and banton that! Can someone break down banton for me? BTW, not sure where we're heading, but just about every caller (old and young) all seem to have a gunta sort of Jamaican accent. Is the "Trini" accent drying?

Is it just the radio station I'm listening? Red 96.7

I recently started to work out a bit and noticed ah partner using an android based app to track his performance/progress. It works on gps, so it tracks your distance covered, gives you an accurate outline of the route you took, calculates calories burned, speed, steps and provides a ton of graphs with the info. You can even compare daily workouts to see how you're improving as far as time/distance/calories etc is concerned.Thing even tells you after burning calories what it would equal too in food. So if you burned 500 calories, you may have 2 apples and a peach. BTW, he's been testing it with walking, running and riding.

For Blackberry users, do you know any similar apps out there?

Entertainment & Culture Discussion / Bob Marley.
« on: April 20, 2012, 03:37:00 PM »
Other than some some of his mainstream songs, I know little about the man, his music and influence. With the new doc/movie about him coming out, it had me thinking. Now I eh trying to disrespect the legacy of the man eh.

Do you think his passing propelled him to a greater height and appreciation than if he were alive today? At the time of his death, was he on the rise and had he lived, would he have been as equal or greater today?

Thoughts?

P.S. On a global stage, which non-white musician could rival Mr Marley for his popularity, reach and almost cult-like following?

Football / Could This Help Indian Football?
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:33:04 PM »
* Like the idea of teams "must have" compulsory six under-21 Indian players in their squad.

Indian football set to get its own IPL

Indian football is set to get a major boost as it prepares to host a competition - with the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Robert Pires and Robbie Fowler - that hopes to replicate the success of cricket's Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Celebrity Management Group (CMG) has signed a 30-year deal with the Indian Football Association for the league, which is set to contain other former international stars like Fernando Morientes, Hernan Crespo, Jay-Jay Okocha and Maniche in its first year.

The competition will begin on February 25 and run until April 8, with 30 players and six coaches auctioned off in the city of Kolkata.

"We have signed seven 'icon' players for the auction and each of the six teams will have one such player with a $600,000 salary cap," Bhaswar Goswami, executive director of CMG told Reuters. "We have started with six teams this year, all in the state of West Bengal but have already been approached to expand the league to other parts of the country.

"Every team will have $2.5 million to spend in the first year. They will have a maximum of four foreigners and a compulsory six under-21 Indian players in their squad."

A cricket-dominated India has a poor domestic league, while its international team ranks 162nd in the FIFA rankings. However, an estimated 60 million Indians watched the 2009-10 Premier League season on television and Goswami is sure that the league can help.

"The league is modelled on Major League Soccer and of course IPL," Goswami added. "We saw the hype and buzz around players' auction in IPL and feel it can be an equal success. It's a brilliant concept. We expect owners to make profit much earlier than the IPL franchises. We are also in the process of finalising television rights for live broadcast across south-east Asia."

Pires, a former Arsenal midfielder, claimed that he would be paid at least €395,000 for seven weeks and said he was excited to embark on a new adventure.

"Since I had nothing in Europe, why not try something completely unknown? I've never been over there," Pires told L'Equipe's website. "I am proud to be the first Frenchman to go and play there. And eight weeks is nothing.

"If my (club) president likes me, it could be €790,000 ($1 million). It is a lot of money. I'm not going to complain about that am I? But I'm not going there as a tourist. It's a new adventure."

General Discussion / Stolen? What would you do.
« on: December 13, 2011, 10:33:54 AM »
Ladies and gents...

so I'm watching a video the guys who do the "Santana" series did for the promotion of Saute 2011 and I noticed some of my images in the video feed. At no time did they ask permission to use my pics and not only did they use it without authorization, they used it commercially.

What would you do?

Ah mean.. I'm a partner with Youtube (where this and their other videos are hosted), so I can easily report them and it could cause some problems for them. But I'm also a fan of their work and love the creativity using local characters etc. Well I use to have a heap of respect for their work..

what would you guys do?

Football / Event/s With Most Impact On Our Football?
« on: November 24, 2011, 10:36:32 AM »
So it's been a couple weeks of denial after the loss and early exit compliments of Guyana and to say I'm broken, is putting it lightly. But in all honesty we could see it coming.

We've put blame high and low, but looking back I have to ask... what in you guys opinion have effected us or have had the most impact on our football?

It's easy to say that we didn't build on the success? of Germany, but one must consider that we barely scraped through to Germany. Basically we didn't have a foundation to build anything?

For me 4 things stand out..

1. HAITI!
2. The loss to the yanks on the road to Italy - that deflated us all, as well as one of the better teams to ever to wear our colors (still my fave team)
3. Firing Whim!
4. That missed penalty by Stern last campaign in central america. There was a downward spiral after that.
