World Cup-bound Hislop hopes to cap week to remember

LONDON, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Shaka Hislop has missed out on World Cup celebrations in his native Trinidad and Tobago to play in goal for West Ham United against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Hislop was part of the Trinidad squad that secured a memorable playoff victory over Bahrain last week to book their place at the World Cup finals for the first time.

Trinidad and Tobago prime-minister Patrick Manning has already declared a public holiday to celebrate reaching Germany 2006 and the players were treated as royalty on their return.

Hislop, 36, was determined to prolong his international career and achieve his goal of playing at next year's World Cup.

The experienced keeper will make it a week to remember if he manages to keep out former West Ham team mates midfielder Michael Carrick and striker Jermain Defoe at Spurs on Sunday.

Hislop added: "This is probably the best week of my career. I have been very fortunate during my club career and have played for some fantastic clubs.

"But I was determined to persevere... with the national side in the hope of playing at a World Cup.

"Nothing comes bigger to a player than what he accomplishes with the national team. Coming from a country as small as Trinidad, it means a lot to the entire region.

With a population of about 1.1 million, they will be one of the smallest nations taking part in the sport's showpiece event.

"I am hearing about how good the celebrations are in other islands of the country and it is testament to how close we are as a region.

Hislop returns to face a Spurs side who are just two points ahead of West Ham, after both clubs have enjoyed fine starts to the season, and United also have a game in hand.

A victory on Sunday would take West Ham above Tottenham and up to sixth place in the Premier League standings.

"My boots are still in Trinidad and I need to get a new pair before the Tottenham game," he said. "I am a size 13 so not many people will carry that.

"But this is a such big game for me to come back to. I know the history of these two clubs and I know what it means to the supporters.

"There is extra spice to the game because there are so many players with links to both clubs. I have no doubts Jermain is one of the best strikers in the game and to get one over Tottenham would be well received at Upton Park."

Pele and Maradona in two separate leagues of their own - although Pele name will remain immortal.

The thing bout Maradona, skill aside, is how he let himself and his life slide after 1990, looking at him today no one would guess (if they never heard of him) that he was a professional athlete that led Argentina to World Cup triumph.
For his age, Pele still keepin fit, has the same humility and easygoing-ness that characterizes a lot of Brazilian players (except Romario, haha). When he touches a football, to this day...yuh does still see flashes of unique brilliance.

DON'T BE IN A RUSS TO QUIT

FALKIRK boss John Hughes fears Russell Latapy will quit football after the World Cup finals.

Latapy is due back in training this morning after helping Trinidad and Tobago to the greatest result in their history.

The Soca Warriors saw off Bahrain 2-1 over two legs to book their place in the finals next summer after a gruelling 19match qualifying campaign.

Hughes predicts a battalion of Bairns will join the Tartan Army in Germany in support of the Caribbean kings.

But he worries Latapy, 37, will be tempted to bow out of the game altogether on the ultimate high when he believes he is still good for at least another 12 months.

Hughes said: "I hope Russell doesn't decide the World Cup will be a great way to end his career because he has at least another year left in him after the finals.

"I'd be lying if I said I haven't thought that Russell might come and say the World Cup will be his swansong.

"I was surprised to see Russell on the bench in Bahrain so he has to work hard over the next few months to make sure he's part of the starting 11 when Germany comes around.

"But I'm sure there will be a few Falkirk fans now planning their trips to Germany to support him.

"I'll look to see if I can get over for a couple of games myself.

"We expect to see Russell in training in the morning but one of the lads heard Dwight Yorke being interviewed on the radio and he said it sounded as if there was some party going on in the background so you never know."

congrats to t&t, u really deserved to win, but that doesnt mean bahrain didnt, the referee missed out on at least 2 dangerous fouls that i remember, and for trinidad gave em fouls for the tiniest falls, still beautifull plays for trinidad, but dont u think having a columbian referee is a bti unfair, cloumbia is so close to trinidad that they might be related, if there is a rematch, which i think there should be, we want an arabian referee, how does that sound? fair or not?
ps. thnx trinidad for the warm welcome and disciplened behavior at our countrys theme song.
if there is no rematch, good luck in the world cup against the other monsters who will eat u alive.

Thanks for the well wishes. Trinidad don't have much in common with Columbia besides a lil Spanish blood here and there and we like each other's women. Dat iz it. :beermug:

Ronaldo raring to go against Barca

MADRID, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Real Madrid striker Ronaldo is raring to return to action in Saturday's match against former club Barcelona after over a month out with an ankle injury. "I've undergone 20 days of very intense treatment and have done three or four training sessions and now I'm ready to play," the Brazilian international told a news conference on Thursday.

"The ankle is a delicate area especially for a striker, who has to change direction all the time, but I've worked hard during the whole recovery programme.

"I'm happy with what I've done, I feel good and I'm ready for the game although it will be up to the coach to decide how much I play. Like the rest of the team I will be at 100 percent for the match."

Ronaldo, who suffered a partial ligament tear in his left ankle after scoring two goals in last month's 3-0 Primera Liga win over Atletico Madrid, is Real's leading scorer with seven league goals this season.

"It hurts when you can't be there to help the team," he said. "But it's a long season and the important thing is that we are still up there and have a good chance to win this game, earn ourselves more points and then go on to win the league."

The 29-year-old Brazilian dismissed suggestions that in-form Barcelona were the overwhelming favourites for Saturday's clash at the Bernabeu.

"I don't think there are any favourites. I've never seen any team win a match before the kickoff, not Brazil, not Spain, nor any other team.

"We don't have to prove anything to anybody. It is a game that is worth three points just like any other and we have to make sure we win it especially as it is at home.

"We have the quality to beat any team in the world."

Responding to comments from Barcelona players and coach Frank Rijkaard who said this week that they hoped Ronaldo would be able to play, the Brazilian replied: "I wonder if they will be so happy after the game."

TITLE CELEBRATIONS

He also had a message for Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o who will return to the Bernabeu for the first time since insulting his former club during the Catalans' title celebrations at the end of last season.

"Eto'o will get the reception he deserves from the Real Madrid fans. He said things that weren't very intelligent.

"You have to understand the Real Madrid fans. I have been jeered many times in my career and I don't know how he will be received. But the fans have to give an example just like the rest of the club."

Eto'o chanted derogatory comments about Real into the microphone during a speech at the Nou Camp after Barca won the title last May.

The Cameroon international apologised the following day for his comments.

Ronaldo, however, had praise for his compatriot Ronaldinho, the Barcelona forward who is favourite to win this year's European footballer of the year award.

"If it is true (reports that he has won the award) I think he deserves it, he's a great player and a great friend and he's had an outstanding year," said Ronaldo who won the prestigious prize in 1997 and 2002.

Marvin Andrews, Russel Latapy and the others all came back together. He was the only one missing.

When he comes back he'll find out we are as angry at him now as we were happy for him the other night.

We understand how you feel but you have to understand how we feel that night. If you were in Port of Spain on Wednesday afternoon you would understand. He will be back soon. THanks for the support.  :beermug:

Yeah that whole move that led to the goal was sweet. Yorke was the backbone of that....he move up and shakes the man through midfield, took the corner ( I was still wondering why the ass Yorke takin set plays) and GOAL.

Ah like when Trinidad get into the groove and start making some sweet attacking though...one was when Whitley break through and Stern was wide open...or when Latapy come on and there was some sweet passing...de man hit the bar (ah almost piss) . A fresh-legs Latapy is enuff trouble for any defense yes  :beermug:

Fifa president Sepp Blatter was interviewed in Fifa headquarters in geneva this morning, when asked about the Bahrain and Trinidad world cup qualifer he quoted telling goal magazine "I think Bahrain deserve a re-match,we are here to make sure that justice is served" he then pointed about the growing violence in football "

Eh Bahrainy

Nice try, why you can't do like the rest of your colleagues and ACCEPT it??
By the way....there is NO such football magazine as "Goal Magazine",  alright? Unless you talkin 'bout hockey. If yuh have a Bahrainian hockey team, all de best with dat.

Nice try at the creativity. But doh quit your day job. Whatever dat is.

7. Japan
8. Ivory Coast
9. Canada (so I could actually see a football game in the stadium in dis country)
