Lancashire rivals clash on Grand Slam Sunday

Liverpool have discovered a new-found sense of self-confidence as they prepare to travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Grand Slam Sunday.

The Reds had been offered as potential Premier League champions ahead of the current campaign, but when United became the first - and so far only - visiting team this season to leave Anfield with three points in December that prospect appeared as unlikely as the two fierce Lancashire rivals agreeing to let bygones be bygones.

However, over recent weeks there has been a gentle subsidence in the talk of Liverpool's main objective being their battle with Merseyside rivals Everton for fourth spot in the table as aspirations have quietly drifted three places higher.

Table-toppers United, though, have been there, done that and have collected the Premier League winners' T-shirt on nine previous occasions and they will feel they have heard all the stereotypical Scouse self-confident swagger before.

Having thought they had polished off the Reds' title talk four months ago, United will be looking forward to once again ending any speculative wagging of tongues this weekend.

Ferdinand doubt

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson openly admits his enjoyment of the intensity of this fixture and he will be desperate to maintain his unbeaten league record against his opposite number Rafa Benitez to end any further speculation of a Reds resurgence and reinforce his side's hopes of defending their title.

However, Ferguson has doubts over the fitness of defender Rio Ferdinand as he prepares for the visit of Liverpool.

Ferdinand has been struggling with a back injury and missed Wednesday's victory over Bolton as Ferguson experimented with a new look defensive formation to accommodate for the centre-back's possible absence.

Gerard Pique came in for Ferdinand and Ferguson insists he would have no qualms in continuing to select the Spaniard, but Patrice Evra and Wes Brown could be recalled.

Agger absence

United also have concerns over goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (groin) and striker Louis Saha (knee) as Ferguson faces a selection dilemma, but the Scot will have no doubts in picking the top-flight's leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese trickster took his haul in all competitions this season to 33 on Wednesday to surpass George Best's record for goals in a season.

Meanwhile, Benitez has no new injury worries ahead of Liverpool's short journey down the East Lancs Road.

Defender Daniel Agger is out after having had a third operation on a broken metatarsal earlier this week and Benitez does not expect his return until next season, while Harry Kewell - whose Anfield days appear numbered - will be missing as he is set to captain Australia in Singapore.

Benitez has seen his side record seven consecutive victories in all competitions since February's FA Cup defeat to Barnsley and he is expected to maintain a settled line-up, although the experienced John Arne Riise may get the nod over Ryan Babel.

Star striker Fernando Torres, the man largely responsible for Liverpool's recent 100 per cent record, will lead the Liverpool line as Benitez looks to add to the gossip in Lancashire.

Chelsea v Arsenal preview
Team news to be added

London rivals go head-to-head on Grand Slam Sunday

Chelsea will have to cast aside this season's unwanted reputation as big-game bottlers when they tackle Arsenal on Grand Slam Sunday.

Since Avram Grant took the helm in September, the Blues have failed to beat any of the top seven in league action and have collected just two points from their four meetings with the top four all season.

They also suffered Wembley heartache against Tottenham with a disappointing display in the Carling Cup final and crashed out of the FA Cup at Barnsley, leading some pundits to question Grant's ability to get the best out of his players in key fixtures.

But victory over bitter London rivals Arsenal on Sunday would silence the critics and see Chelsea climb above the Gunners into second place in the Premier League table.

Arsene Wenger's men have stuttered badly in recent weeks, with four successive draws seeing them go from five points ahead of Manchester United at the summit to three points adrift.

A fifth game without a victory would be another hammer blow to their title hopes, but the Gunners proved they have the appetite for the big occasion after seeing off European champions Milan 2-0 in Italy to progress to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Team news

Czech international goalkeeper Petr Cech is hoping to return to the Chelsea starting line-up for the clash with the Gunners and will undergo a late fitness test.

Cech has been out of action with an ankle injury since the 4-0 thrashing of West Ham at Upton Park on 1st March with Carlo Cudicini deputising.

Grant could also recall Nicolas Anelka after a thigh injury kept him out of the midweek thriller at Spurs, along with midfield duo Michael Ballack and John Obi Mikel.

Arsenal have no new injury worries to contend with as Abou Diaby (calf) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

Theo Walcott, who has earned an England recall from Fabio Capello, is pressing for a place in the starting XI while Johan Djourou (groin) played for the reserves in midweek as he works on his match fitness.

Lyon vs Utd
Live on Setanta Sports at 3 30pm
and Delayed on ESPN Deportes(channel 61) at 5 45pm

Ryan Giggs is poised to make his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance when Manchester United meet Lyon at Stade Gerland.

The Welsh winger will become the eighth player to reach that landmark and is expected to start the first leg of the last 16 tie.

Giggs was left out of the squad for the weekend's FA Cup win over Arsenal, but is one of a host of players to return for the Premier League champions.

Paul Scholes is close to reaching a century of appearances in the competition as well and he is tipped to start in central midfield.

Who will partner Scholes?

Sir Alex Ferguson must decide who to pair with the evergreen Scholes after Anderson impressed once again in the 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal.

Michael Carrick is another option, while the safety net of Owen Hargreaves could return after missing the FA Cup success.

Carlos Tevez should return in attack alongside Wayne Rooney, while Louis Saha is fit again to provide United with striking options on the bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo sat out the Arsenal game with a stomach complaint and will be out to improve upon his five goals in this season's Champions League.

With captain Gary Neville still not fit, the defence picks itself as United go in search of a positive result to set them up for the second leg at Old Trafford.

United won 1-0 in France against Lille at this stage last season, but would arguably settle for a repeat of the 2-2 draw they secured at Lyon in the group phase in 2004.

Defensive troubles

In contrast to United's resounding win at the weekend, Lyon head into the game on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Le Mans in Ligue 1.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas was critical of the performance and has demanded a response against the Red Devils.

Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa, who have both been linked with moves to Old Trafford, are expected to start for Alain Perrin's side.

The hosts' selection problems are in defence as centre-halves Patrick Muller and Cleber Anderson are both out injured.

Cris is in the squad for the first time since suffering a knee injury in August, but is only likely to be on the bench due to a lack of match fitness.

That means former Newcastle United defender Jean-Alain Boumsong is set to partner Sebastien Squillaci at the back.

Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Evra, Hargreaves, Ferdinand, Brown, Ronaldo, Anderson, Saha, Rooney, Giggs, Park, Vidic, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, Pique, O'Shea, Fletcher, Simpson, Kuszczak, Tevez, Eagles.

Football / Brazillian Ronaldo suffers serious injury...again
« on: February 13, 2008, 04:43:28 PM »
Ronaldo has been stretchered off in tears after sustaining what could be a very serious left knee injury.

The Brazilian had only been on the field for three minutes in Milan’s rescheduled Week 16 match with Livorno when he collapsed in the box.

The referee awarded a penalty for Jose Luis Vidigal’s handball – later converted by Andrea Pirlo to equalise from Nico Pulzetti’s effort – but all attention was on Ronaldo.

He was stretchered off screaming and crying in agony, clutching his left knee, and initial reports suggest it is a very serious injury to the tendons.

The fall was not entirely dissimilar to the April 12, 2000 collapse that happened minutes after his comeback for Inter against Lazio.

That kept him out for almost another year and with the recent rumours Ronaldo is considering retirement, there are fears another setback could force Il Fenomeno out of football.

The player has been immediately rushed to a local hospital for tests, accompanied in the ambulance by Milan director Leonardo.

It is just the latest in a series of disastrous injuries that have struck Ronaldo. The first was on November 21, 1998 when he partially tore the tendon in his right knee during Inter-Lecce.

He underwent surgery and returned on April 12, 2000 in the Coppa Italia Final against Lazio, but within six minutes the same knee visibly buckled without challenge and this time the tendon was completely severed.

Another operation kept him out of action for almost a year and he was declared “clinically healed” on March 8, 2001.

He had a number of muscular problems on the road to match fitness and switched to Real Madrid in June 2002, but here too had setbacks and was out for three months after straining ligaments in his left leg in 2005.

In Ronaldo’s first six months at Milan he scored seven goals in 14 games, but has barely set foot on the pitch since the summer due to a series of muscular injuries.

England v Switzerland
Date: Wednesday, 6 February
Kick-off: 2000 GMT
Venue: Wembley Stadium
BBC Coverage: Live on BBC One, Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website
FSC @4pm TT Time and at 12am Re-broadcast

Michael Owen is expected to miss out on a place in England boss Fabio Capello's starting line-up for the Italian's first match in charge on Wednesday.

The striker is set for a place on the bench for the game against Switzerland.

Capello had Joe Cole operating behind Wayne Rooney up front in his final training session on Tuesday.

Matthew Upson joined Rio Ferdinand in central defence, with David Bentley and Ashley Young alongside Owen Hargreaves and Steven Gerrard in midfield.

David James was in goal while the two full-backs were Wes Brown and Ashley Cole.

Should that team start the friendly against the Swiss, that would mean nine changes to the side beaten by Croatia in Steve McClaren's last game at the helm.

Only Gerrard and Joe Cole would remain from the team that lost 3-2 at Wembley on 21 November.

Capello has vowed not to tell his players who is in the team until shortly before they leave their hotel for Wembley on Wednesday afternoon.

Whoever is chosen, Sir Trevor Brooking thinks places will remain up for grabs under the new coaching regime.

"There are going to be very, very few automatic choices," the Football Association's development director told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"If you play well, then you could force your way into Capello's starting XI. If you deliver for him, then he'll support you.

"He will really change it around. He wants to look at people. He just wants to develop this winning mentality."

Newcastle star Owen, who has scored 40 goals in 88 appearances for his country, has only just returned to first-team action after a succession of injuries.

Young, 22, would be making only his second appearance for the England senior team but he has enjoyed an impressive season with Aston Villa.

He would start in the left side of midfield, with 23-year-old Bentley on the right.

The Blackburn Rovers player, who has played twice for England, has long been tipped to fill a role that David Beckham had been hoping to occupy.

But new boss Capello decided the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder would have to wait until he was fully match fit before being given the chance to win his 100th cap.

James appears to have beaten off competition from Villa's Scott Carson and Wigan's Chris Kirkland to start in goal.

The 37-year-old, who has been in tremendous form for Portsmouth this season, will be earning his 36th cap.

In front of him, Upson would be making his first England appearance since coming on a substitute in the 1-0 defeat by Spain in Madrid on 17 November 2004.

And Manchester United's Wes Brown looks to have landed the right-back berth ahead of Micah Richards.

Expected team: David James (Portsmouth), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Ashley Cole (Chelsea); David Bentley (Blackburn), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Ashley Young (Aston Villa); Joe Cole (Chelsea), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).

England v Switzerland preview
Capello's Italian Job begins at Wembley

Fabio Capello has been touted as the man to save English football and the rescue mission begins against Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday.

With England in the doldrums following the failure to qualify for the finals of Euro 2008, the Football Association have opted to implement their very own Italian Job.

And the astute Capello - who has been quick to point out he is no footballing 'Messiah' - will be well aware that his new dawn hangs in the balance in a not totally dissimilar manner to a teetering scene from the Alpine cliff tops high above Turin.

The footballing critics will be quick to pounce upon any misjudgement of balance from Capello and the former Milan, Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid boss will be eager to inform his lads of a 'great idea' to tip the equilibrium in his favour.

Owen out

Known to be a tough taskmaster and recognised for a refusal to acknowledge sentiment, as David Beckham will testify, Capello is unlikely to pull any punches in his team selection.

Michael Owen is expected to be the most high-profile of Capello cuts as the Newcastle striker pays the price for an injury-stricken season and finds himself warming a seat on the substitutes' bench.

That is likely to leave Wayne Rooney as Capello's point man in attack with Joe Cole floating just behind as England attempt to pick the lock of the Swiss defence.

Steven Gerrard has been named as Capello's captain and the Liverpool skipper is predicted to be given a licence to roam as he is accompanied by the holding Owen Hargreaves in the centre of midfield.

Bentley start

It is understood Aston Villa's Ashley Young will be rewarded for his fine form this season with a second international cap as he slots in to the left wing, while David Bentley - often a target for the England boo-boys - will get the nod on the right.

Manchester United's Wes Brown is ready to drop in behind Bentley on the right of defence with club colleague Rio Ferdinand partnered by West Ham's Matthew Upson in the heart of the back four.

Chelsea's Ashley Cole will be trusted with the left-back slot, while Capello opts for experience in goal as 37-year-old Portsmouth shot-stopper David James is preferred to Scott Carson and Chris Kirkland.

However, Switzerland cannot be dismissed and they will be desperate to sabotage Capello's scheme.

Kobi Kuhn favours a counter-attacking style, but the Switzerland coach is without regular strike pair Alex Frei and Marco Streller through injury which is likely to mean teenage forward Eren Derdiyok plays some part.

Football / Forever Remembered- R.I.P Munich Victims
« on: February 06, 2008, 05:31:38 AM »
February 6 will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United's history, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich air crash.

Flying back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, the team plane stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

Twenty-two of the people on board died instantly, while Duncan Edwards - one of the eight victims from the team - died 15 days later as a result of the injuries he sustained.

The tragedy is an indelible part of United's history, as is Sir Matt Busby overcoming his injuries to build another great team which won the European Cup 10 years later.

Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26), Geoff Bent (25), Liam Whelan (22) and Duncan Edwards (21) all died, along with club secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley.

Eight journalists died - Alf Clarke, Tom Jackson, Don Davies, George Fellows, Archie Ledbrook, Eric Thompson, Henry Rose, and Frank Swift who was a former Manchester City player. Plane captain Ken Rayment perished, as did Sir Matt's friend Willie Sanitof. Travel agent Bela Miklos and passenger Tom Cable also died.

We will never forget.

Football / Utd on top of the rich list..again
« on: January 11, 2008, 07:30:46 AM »
Manchester United have been declared the world's richest club once more.

Although Real Madrid laid claim to the honour for a couple of years, United officials believe their gross revenue of £245million in the year to June 2007 exceeds that of the Spanish giants by just 12 Euros if average conversion rates during the 12-month period in question are used.

United's current fan-base has been estimated at 333 million, with chief executive David Gill believing the number of active supporters hovers around the 139 million mark - of whom 83 million are based in Asia.

The Old Trafford outfit have also revealed stunning profits of £59.6million for the 12 months to June 2007, a massive 93 per cent rise on the previous year.

With revenue streams increasing in every area and more to come this year once the new, vastly-improved Premier League TV deal starts to take effect, United are in far healthier shape than anyone could have predicted before the Glazer family's involvement following the controversial takeover in 2005.

Gill was full of praise for the Glazers and their involvement in helping United record such healthy profits.

Excellent results

"They are excellent results which reflect a fantastic season on the pitch and also the work that has gone on off the pitch, with the expansion of the stadium and the new shirt deal so we are very pleased," Gill told Sky Sports News.

"The Glazers are not in this for publicity or ego - but they have been true to their word.

"They have also added value in other areas. The AIG shirt-sponsorship deal was a world record - that was down to them.

"The financial position of the club is not something that worries us. Clearly, the cash from these results will be used partially to service the debt and also to reinvest in players.

"The banks would not have leant money to the club if they did not feel there was a sensible structure in place, and there has never been any brake on funds."

No moves

Despite their healthy financial position, Gill insists the club have no plans to make any moves in this month's transfer window.

"We have no plans to do anything," added Gill. "We have a great team, we have a great outlook so there are no real plans.

"So unless something happens, I can't see it happening, we will take what we have got."

Football / Capello set for England hot-seat
« on: December 13, 2007, 02:21:13 PM »
Fabio Capello is poised to be confirmed as the new England manager after the Football Association board approved the Italian's appointment on Thursday.

Capello will sign a four-and-a-half year contract worth £4m a year, but the finer points are still being finalised.

"The board has approved his appointment as manager subject to further contract negotiations," said an FA spokesman.

"These will continue. But there are no problems and we're going through the process for a successful conclusion."

BBC sports editor Mihir Bose says Capello and the FA have an agreement that both parties can end the deal in 2010.

One of the issues set to be ironed out is Capello's choice of Franco Baldini as sporting director.

However, Baldini has told the BBC that Capello, 61, will become England boss whether he gets an FA position or not.

"It will not be a problem, Capello will be England coach for sure," said Baldini.

"I understand the FA has, in principle, said 'yes' to me doing this job. If I do not, I think Capello will still be England coach, but maybe he will be a little less comfortable."

The FA discussed Capello's appointment via two conference calls on Thursday.

The former AC Milan, Real Madrid, Juventus and Roma coach is its number one target following Jose Mourinho's decision to pull out of the running.

Capello had previously met FA chief executive Brian Barwick and director of football Sir Trevor Brooking to discuss becoming Steve McClaren's successor.

Those talks in London were described as "extremely positive" by FA director of communications Adrian Bevington.

Capello was back in Milan on Thursday and told the BBC there were some issues to be resolved before his appointment could be made official.

When asked by 5 Live's Brian Alexander if he was about to become the England boss, he replied: "Not yet. We shall see."

Capello wants Baldini, who worked with him at Roma and Real Madrid, to identify players and watching opposition teams.

But the FA is believed to be concerned that the role could overlap with the responsibilities of Brooking, the organisation's director of football.

Capello expressed his interest in the England job just days after McClaren's departure in November, describing it as a "beautiful challenge".

Capello has a hugely impressive CV and comes with the backing of such football luminaries as Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Gianfranco Zola and Clarence Seedorf.

Sven-Goran Eriksson, the first foreigner to take charge of the England national team, is also a big fan.

2007: Guides Real to La Liga during his second spell

"I have known Fabio Capello for many years, I was his opponent in Serie A for 10 years," said the Swede, who was coach of Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio and Sampdoria.

"He is a very good man and manager. His record speaks very clear. He has won titles in Italy.

"Capello is one of the best managers you can find."

Capello has only a limited grasp of the English language but Eriksson added: "That won't be a problem. It certainly wasn't for me as I spoke to him in Italian!"

Capello has enjoyed success in both Italy and Spain.

He has won nine league titles in 16 years as a coach, picking up silverware with all four clubs - AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus - he has been in charge of.

He won the Champions League with Milan in 1994 and was also an accomplished player, winning 32 caps for Italy.

Marcel Desailly played under Capello at Milan during his first spell in charge and has no doubt his former coach will be a success.

"He's professional and very demanding, but I think that's what the England players need," the Frenchman told BBC News 24.

Reading boss Steve Coppell and former England captain Tony Adams are not entirely happy the England job has gone to a foreigner.

"I'm sad to be honest," said Coppell. "I'm a proud English manager and I would have loved an Englishman to have been in charge."

Adams, who, as part of his coaching education has been to Italy to watch Capello in action, added: "I wanted English.

"There's a lot of good Englishmen and I just think it was only right we should have tried to get someone English."

However, Coppell admitted Capello's coaching credentials are outstanding.

"You look at the CV and, I must admit, it's enticing," he said. "He's everything you'd want an English manager to be."

Capello's first game in charge will be a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley on 6 February, with another friendly to follow against France in Paris on 26 March.

England's first World Cup qualifier is not until 6 September.

They have been drawn in a group alongside Croatia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Andorra.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

Team News:

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is set to return to the squad after a two month absence with a metatarsal injury.

Defender Steve Finnan is doubtful because of a calf problem while centre-back Daniel Agger remains sidelined with a foot injury.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reporting a clean bill of health, with John O'Shea (abductor strain) the only minor doubt.

Owen Hargreaves has recovered from the calf injury he sustained in the warm-up prior to Saturday's win over Derby.

Liverpool from: Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Kewell, Gerrard, Mascherano, Benayoun, Alonso, Kuyt, Torres, Aurelio, Babel, Crouch, Finnan, Hobbs, Itandje, Leiva, Voronin, Sissoko.

Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Brown, Simpson, Ferdinand, Vidic, Pique, O'Shea, Evra, Ronaldo, Nani, Fletcher, Anderson, Hargreaves, Carrick, Giggs, Rooney, Saha, Tevez.

BIG-MATCH FACTS

Liverpool make their seventh attempt to notch a 50th league victory over Manchester United.

A draw would be enough to see Manchester United climb above Arsenal to the top of the table, ahead of the Gunners' home game with Chelsea which kicks off less than 45 minutes after the final whistle of this game is blown; victory for Liverpool will half their six-point deficit on the Red Devils.

This is the second of three massive fixtures in eight days for the Merseysiders, following Tuesday's decisive 0-4 Champions League win over Marseilles in France, and ahead of Wednesday's Carling Cup quarter-final at Chelsea.

Liverpool suffered a shock loss, away to Reading last Saturday, and are in danger of their first back-to-back defeats in 17 Premier League matches.

Both these clubs are meeting a fellow member of the "big four" for the third time this season, and both are unbeaten: United beat Chelsea 2-0 at home on 23 September and drew 2-2 at Arsenal on 3 November, while Liverpool have drawn both theirs 1-1 at home, to Chelsea on 19 August and to Arsenal on 28 October.

Sir Alex Ferguson has had the better of the exchanges with Rafael Benitez. United have won five and drawn one of the six Premier League matches against Rafa's Reds, although the Merseysiders did knock out United from the FA Cup in February 2006.

Manchester United ended Liverpool's 30-match unbeaten Premier League record at Anfield with a 0-1 victory in this corresponding fixture last March. John O'Shea came off the bench to win a dramatic stoppage time winner, after Paul Scholes was sent off for swinging a punch at Liverpool's Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool have suffered more Premier League defeats to Manchester United than any other club (16), and conceded more Premier League goals against them than to any other side (44).

Skysports Preview

Manchester United make the short trip down the East Lancs Road on Sunday to renew one of English football's fiercest rivalries as they take on Liverpool at Anfield.

It is no secret that the two North West clubs do not like each other and this year's contest, which can be seen as part of Grand Slam Sunday live on Sky Sports 1, promises to be one of the biggest battles for years.

Liverpool sit six points behind United, who trail league leaders Arsenal by one point, but they have a game in hand on their rivals and can be labelled as genuine contenders to snatch the Red Devils' Premier League crown.

United, though, have not lost to Liverpool in the league since 2004 and Sir Alex Ferguson's side will be keen to stretch their unbeaten record while also inflicting a major body blow to their Merseyside foes' title aspirations.

Comeback

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez could name Xabi Alonso in his starting line up for the first time since October following the midfielder's return to training.

Alonso, who missed six weeks earlier in the season with a broken metatarsal, has been out of action since sustaining a new foot injury in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on 28th October, but the influential Spanish international could be fit to face United.

However, Benitez looks set to be without defender Steve Finnan after the Republic of Ireland international missed Tuesday's 4-0 win over Marseille with a calf problem.

Daniel Agger will definitely miss out as he continues his comeback from a foot injury, however Benitez is expected to stick with star striker Fernando Torres who has been singled out as a major threat by United.

Top of the table

United could return to the summit of the Premier League if they record three points against Liverpool and Arsenal slip up against Chelsea in Sunday's other crunch clash.

And United manager Sir Alex Ferguson only has new concerns over the fitness of last year's Anfield match winner John O'Shea as Owen Hargreaves has recovered from the calf injury he sustained in the warm-up prior to last week's win over Derby.

The versatile O'Shea fired an injury-time winner against Liverpool last season to send the Red Devils on their march to the title, but he is struggling with a groin strain and is expected to have to settle for a place on the bench.

Gary Neville - who tends to prove a less than popular figure on Merseyside - will be missing as he continues his comeback from a series of injury setbacks, much to the disappointment of the Anfield faithful.

Skysports.com predicts: 1-1

SKY BET odds: Liverpool 8/5, Draw 15/8, Man Utd 2/1

One to watch: Fernando Torres

Arsenal vs Chelsea

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas trained on Friday and could be in line for a return against Chelsea.

Fabregas has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since 27 November but trained along with Robin van Persie, Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb.

Ricardo Carvalho (back) and Florent Malouda (knee) could be back for Chelsea if they pass fitness tests.

Didier Drogba (knee), Michael Ballack (ankle) and Michael Essien (suspended) are definitely unavailable.

Arsenal (from): Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Toure, Clichy, Eboue, Gilberto, Diarra, Rosicky, van Persie, Adebayor, Lehmann, Senderos, Traore, Song, Denilson, Bendtner, Diaby, Eduardo.

Chelsea (from): Cech, Cudicini, Hilario, Belletti, Ferreira, Carvalho, Alex, Ben Haim, Terry, A Cole, J Cole, Bridge, Lampard, Malouda, Sidwell, Kalou, Pizarro, Shevchenko, Wright-Phillips, Makelele, Obi.

Skysports Preview:
Arsenal host Chelsea in the second instalment of Grand Slam Sunday, in what promises to be a capital clash of epic proportions.

By the time things get underway at Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger's side may find themselves usurped at the Premier League summit by Manchester United, depending on the result from their tough trip to Liverpool.

A solitary point return from two miserable away days in the North East has illuminated to the rest of the Premier League the chinks in Arsenal's armour, with their otherwise imperious record stained by disagreeable trips north.

Back on home soil and the top flight's style council could well be back to their luxurious best but without Cesc Fabregas, who is a major doubt, it can be argued Arsenal have the body of a Porsche but the engine of a Ford Focus.

The Spaniard is the physical embodiment of Wenger's vision, a magician on the ball whose intelligence in his feet matches his manager's on the tactics board.

Fabregas' midfield minder Mathieu Flamini is another doubt, with Gilberto Silva ready to deputise in the Frenchman's absence, should Sunday's game arrive too soon.

Touch-and-go

Alexander Hleb, so impressive before picking up a knock at Aston Villa, could come back into contention but again it is a touch-and-go scenario.

Lassana Diarra and Abou Diaby could well figure depending on whether Wenger elects to pack his midfield.

Robin van Persie completed 60 minutes of his comeback against Steaua Bucharest in midweek following two months on the sidelines, but Wenger could well elect to use Emmanuel Adebayor as his figurehead, with the returning Dutchman providing bench back-up.

Avram Grant was rewarded this week for calming the good ship Chelsea in his trademark understated style, and while he is the ordinary rather than extraordinary one, he shares with Jose Mourinho the priceless knack of winning matches.

Sunday's game is undoubtedly a huge one for Chelsea, who will be determined to prove wrong those sceptics that have derided their title aspirations following the Portuguese's departure.

Didier Drogba's absence cannot be underestimated and it was highlighted in midweek as they out-fought and out-played Valencia, but could not conjure a goal for love nor money.

Andrei Shevchenko again looked somewhat laboured but it will be the Ukrainian that leads the line, with Salomon Kalou and Claudio Pizarro both clambering for the right to play off him.

Joe Cole's cameo off the bench against Valencia should be enough to win him a start, while Juliano Belletti will come in at right-back at the expense of Paulo Ferreira; likewise Ashley Cole for Wayne Bridge.

Petr Cech, who could well be the busier of the two goalkeepers, came through Tuesday's game unscathed and will provide Chelsea with a world class backline. They may need it.

Man Utd to honour Munich victims

Manchester United will play in non-sponsored shirts, numbered one to 11, in their match on 10 February in honour of the Munich air crash victims.

The Premier League game against rivals Manchester City is four days after the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.

The plane, carrying Matt Busby's legendary 'Babes', crashed on the way back from a European Cup tie at Red Star Belgrade, killing 23 people.

England will also pay tribute when they play on the day of the anniversary.

They face Switzerland on 6 February at Wembley.

United are also setting up a free, permanent exhibition in the South Stand tunnel about the Munich crash and Busby's 'Babes'.

A memorial service will take place on 6 February at 1504 GMT - the exact time of the crash.

Among those to die in the crash were Duncan Edwards - regarded by many as the finest English player of all time - and United skipper Roger Byrne.

Football / Thank You Diego: Rooney better than Kaka
« on: December 04, 2007, 06:41:09 AM »
Great minds think alike

Maradona - Rooney better than Kaka

Diego Maradona does not believe Kaka is the best player in the world after he picked up the Ballon d'Or.

Indeed the Argentine legend says that Manchester Unietd and England star Wayne Rooney has more to offer than the Brazilian ;D(agreed) - who was crowned World Footballer of the Year at the weekend.

"I don't know too well how the election is done but I think(So does Small Mag ;D) that Rooney is better than Kaka," Maradona explained in El Grafico.

"Milan is a team that depends all the time on Kaka but that doesn't make him the best player in the world."

Boca loyalty

Maradona also looked ahead to the Fifa Club World Cup which kicks-off in Japan later this month and where his beloved Boca Juniors are favourites, along with Milan, to meet in the final.

"In my opinion Boca has chances to win the Fifa Club Championship. Everyone is talking about Milan, but if Kaka doesn't play well they will be in problems because they depend too much on him," he said.

"I am not scared of Milan, I only want Boca to get to the competition in good physical condition."

Speaking of his current favourites in football - Maradona ruled on who he feels is the pick of his fellow countrymen.

"At the moment the best three Argentinian players are Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Juan Roman Riquelme."
