CAL director feared dead
By Nalinee Seelal (Newsday).
Monday, February 2 2015

THE JOINT team of police officers probing the disappearance of Caribbean Airlines director Azad Niamat, 69, now believe he may have been killed and his body dumped in the San Raphael area.

Police sources said yesterday because they have no proof of life and no one has demanded a ransom they have concluded Niamat may have been killed in a planned robbery.

Niamat, who was in possession of a large sum of cash, left his home at 70 Chaguanas Main Road, Chaguanas last Thursday at about 10.45 am telling relatives he was going into Port-of-Spain to purchase items for his woodwork shop.

The father of two reportedly sent a distress call to his daughter who lives in Miami prompting her to alert relatives. Officers of the Chaguanas Police Station were called in and a party of officers led by Snr Supt Johnny Abraham along with Inspector Terrence Williams, Sgt Jitindra Toolaram carried out enquiries and Niamat’s vehicle was discovered in San Raphael early Friday.

Yesterday officers of the National Operation Centre using Viper One unsuccessfully combed several areas in San Rapheal in search of Niamat.

Newsday understands Niamat’s son, a doctor who resides in England, is expected in the country today.

Niamat separated from his wife 12 years ago and resided at his mother’s home.

Police sources told Newsday relatives now remain convinced that he may have been murdered but they want closure as soon as possible.

Meanwhile the Trinidad and Tobago Airlines Pilots Association (TTALPA) has expressed concern over Niamat’s disappearance.

TTALPA’s spokesperson and industrial relations consultant, Gerard Pinard, yesterday said the association’s “entire membership is concerned over the disappearance of former pilot and current CAL director Azad Niamat.”

“(We) remain hopeful that he will be found unharmed. In the meantime, our prayers and thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Calls to the mobile phone of CAL chairman, Philip Marshall, went unanswered yesterday but Newsday was able to contact the airline’s chief executive officer, Michael DiLollo.

“At this stage, I can’t make any comments to the story. However I encourage you to stay in touch with our communications people and they will be issuing statements when it’s an appropriate time to do so,” DiLollo stated.

This guys Aunt work with my wife. Very troubling time for the family.

Entertainment & Culture Discussion / Re: KFC: A very Trini obsession
« on: December 10, 2014, 03:35:00 PM »
Question.  What is this obsession we have with condiments on our food. Pizza, bake & Shark, BBQ, KFC, etc.  Every place I go have these large containers of condiments; Shadow beni, garlic sauce, mustard, ketchup and pepper sauce.

I watch people go into a trance going around in a circle putting every thing on the Pizza, the whole pizza gets covered. They're not tasting what pizza taste like. Marios have a good tasting pizza without all that stuff all over it. ah even see a woman put every condiment on green salad.

I can understand the rationale behind all the condiments on Richard's Bake & Shark, the shark have nooo taste at all. Probably due to the high volume they're selling, it's probably not Shark, and the seasoning is not necessary if you can put all the kuchiment on it.

Football / Re: National Team Footballers Dumped On The Sidelines
« on: December 02, 2014, 09:27:22 AM »
So correct me if ah wrong..the players take a chance and try ah thing, trusting only in Mr. Fenwick. Who himself thought he was giving them an opportunity. However, as far as the business aspect went, it was a lot of misunderstanding, and the club say, eh eh, that ain't the deal we wha make..so the boys end up stranded.
Plaza wasn't Central player, but Winchester was, and for him there was a transfer, but no payment, no contract, so transfer revoked, however, you decide out of the goodness of your heart, and a little business sense to bail them out, by putting them on your books, with them actually paying the club back, in the hopeful near future, through their trade. Subsequently, you bring them an put them on your payroll, before you had permission to use them. Ok. Very commendable, especially them being National players. I feel though, that bring home part should of been handled by tTFA or the government, as national players and Citizens of TT in a dire Situation, but the club handled it, this is great. But to put them on your payroll, before they could do the work for you..hmmmnnnn.. Above and beyond the call of duty..
ok, you did.. You know the procedure (now) of what needed to be done, and you believe it was, however, you complaining, because it not moving fast enough, and you paying the boys.. So if TTFA stomp they foot harder, and write a couple more letters, and the FIFA body decide, them not jumping for no deposed , despicable ex-president lil country.. Then obviously another Fifa body needs to be contacted, however, that run around will probably take even more time for that case to be heard..so in the meanwhile, you made a contract with the players  before they could work for you ? Or you just helping them out ..
I think in doing the good stuff, may not necessarily be the right thing.. I was sorry to read somewhere, " all the boys want to do a play football". What, are they tots! They not going to learn anything, haven't y'all..or is it all yuh want them to do, is play for our team. I understand the frustration in making it happen, I don't understand the contracting them, without having what is necessary to contract them. How many. Young men in TT who are very good, just want to play football, will you pay them, or u can't use them all ?
Nb: I'm not attacking or questioning your deed or intentions, just trying to come to terms with what is. Please keep trying, I think we need them on our National team. Btw, did they receive any back pay for past games as well.or TTFA blank them with that ?

Add: just read Bakes post, we not exchanging notes, just having similar views on what is presented.

Much of your assessment is correct. However, we did not do this blindly. We took advice from Dexter Skeene and Sheldon Phillips. There has been issues in the past with registering free agents with the Pro League outside of the transfer window. In this instance, Skeene said they would be allowed once they receive their ITC. Sheldon told us that there shouldn't be any problems (although I think I recall that Winchester should have been more straight forward). The players were only given contracts once we had received the "provisional registration" from TTFA as a player cannot be registered without a contract.

While we wanted to help the lads, this is still business. Winchester was still our player, technically, and Plaza is simply the best striker in T&T, so, yeah, it benefitted us. But no one else was stepping forward. TTFA would not have had the finance to help but perhaps the Govt may have assisted if the story was in the news.

So you're saying that Central FC long game is to have the government indirectly bail out your team (a private entity) with tax payers money, putting the issues of two national players public domain by embarrassing the TTFA, which is already cash strapped. Central FC needs to handle its own business.

Football / CFU Under-17 championship
« on: August 15, 2014, 03:32:55 AM »
Cooper’s U-17s head to St Lucia.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

No training camp but...

“It is the first time in my six or seven years preparing national teams that we didn’t have a camp before a tournament,” national Under-17 men’s head coach Shawn Cooper declared yesterday.

“It is not  ideal conditions, but we are working within the constraints which the Association (TTFA) are under. We are making the best of the situation,” he said.

It is no secret that the cash-strapped Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) is struggling with funding issues. Recently affected have been the senior and women’s Under-15 teams and now, Cooper’s Under-17 footballers.

The team leaves tomorrow for St Lucia, seeking a spot in the final round of the CFU Under-17 championship carded for Haiti in September. It is a path to the Concacaf final zone of World Cup qualifying.

The young Soca Warriors play  St Lucia, Grenada and Curacao  between August 20 and 24 at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, looking for top spot in the group.

“We are trying to work within our constraints because of the lack of resources we have,” Cooper added.

Cooper begins with a new squad, his former bunch having gone onto Under-20 level. His main concern is that most of his current players are new to international football and would not have also built the type of camaraderie which being in a camp develops.

“It’s the first time they are in a competitive environment, so we are cautiously looking to see how  our squad will perform,” Cooper said. “We are behind (other teams) because the other Concacaf teams which we hoping to qualify against have already been exposed to a lot of international matches.”

Cooper thinks his team has raw talent and is captained by W Connection’s Kareem Riley. It also includes Anthony Herbert, a top-scorer in the Youth Pro League.

Cooper is also excited by former primary school star John Rochford, the younger brother of former youth World Cup midfielder Jean-Luc Rochford. The team also has two young goalkeepers from Naparima College, who Cooper hopes will grow as the tournament progresses.

Exactly the player Arsenal was looking for. He offers everything the Gunners attack was missing last season. 2 world class players in 2 summers. And people want to say Wenger afraid to spend money on quality.

We've completed the last stage of the 10 year freeze of heavy spending on world class players.

Arsenal is set to complete the signing of Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona for a transfer fee of EUR 37.7 million. I'ts a four year contract. Medical is scheduled for today. French and Newcastle defender Debuchy has completed his medical. I believe the Club will be making the announcement tomorrow.

Played cricket in the valley behind the church also the George Earl Park against teams like Park Dreads, Valley boys...... can't remember other team names. Funny thing is I can't remember my team name, maybe it was Back Street Boys.
Had to face intimidating pace attack from men like Anthony 'Horn' Tinto and the mistery butterfly bowler 'Chaput', couldn't hit anything he bowl, made you look really silly trying.  Our team used to practice on North Street, just off of Abercromby opposite Caiman Rd. Used too travel to UWI, Tunapuna for matches.
seems like those days are long gone, don't seem like any Windball Cricket league happening in the area, correct me if I'm wrong.

I too, still have lots of family on Abercromby Street, La Sieva, Maracas Vally

I remember ah fella called Manicou Man, he originally from Grenada. This man coulda climb any tree tuh catch manicou. Heard he died recently. St. Joseph lost ah real character. RIP Manicou Man.

the shop across the RC Boys school was called Mr Cross tuck shop.  It burn down a few years back, it was also a heritage building.

Have some pleasant memories of my days in the 80s assisting the St. Joseph Convent choir. That led to teaching some of girls break dancing. Man that was a great time.

Grew up in St Joseph, went the RC School next to the church. I recall the cross on Albert St., sits on Calvary Hill. Didn't know Gonzales family had built it.

No sweat leh meh call it now in ' tongue and cheek ' fashion. South band done get thief as this is strictly ah set ah north band bias. All stars will be up dey then the  GAY Despers  and Rxodus. As far as I concern the winners picked already.

My south bands FOnclaire Hatters and all ah then could beat as much as they want the judges done have it in The bag for ah north  band.
Scramble and pick yuh north band winner from the following:

LARGE BANDS

Pos   Points   Band
 RBC Redemption Sound Setters
PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars
  CAL InvadersWITCO Desperadoes
Republic Bank Exodus
  Bp Renegades
Neal & Massy T’dad All Stars
   Petrotrin Phase ll Pan Groove

Medium band - one from Tobago done on the list to win

Doh matter how hard south band play we eh go be dey . Listen and hear  the commentary and the judging there is a distinct bias for the bands from the north. I say move the Panorama final to Skinner Park. Leah we at least get ah home field advantage. All hail Panorama !!!!!!!!!!

Stueps!!!!  The only true winner of Panorama from South was Hatters in 1975. Fonclaire came close in the late 80s and early 90s, but thats it.

It may seem preposterous, but Central were looking to invite a team such as Japan to visit as part of their WC prep similar to how T&T camped in Austria in 06. However, we discovered that only a national F.A. can invite a nation!

To me, T&T is geographically, a perfect base for a WC camp prior to Brazil. However, unless Govt invest several million into fixing the stadiums, no teams would come.

At HC yesterday, most of the turnstiles aren't working and the pitch would not be suitable as a training surface for national teams...and thats before carnival mashes it up completely. Stephen Hart told me that the only decent surface at the moment is Larry Gomes, but you can't play in the evening as they still have only 3 floodlights working (after a year). He also said that there is a tree growing in the middle of Manny Ramjohn!

Holland played Canada at Varsity Stadium in Toronto prior to the World cup is the USA. I'm sure the capacity at Manny Ramjohn was bigger than the Varsity Stadium back then. Pitch wise it wasn't that great either.
