I don't know how old he was but I know that he had retired and returned to serve the school in the capacity of gamesmaster. From what I've  heard he went out to his car yesterday morning to go to work (I assume) and just collapsed and died. Really very sad.

The police ain't kill priest so I believe once they feel that they are in danger then the use of firearms is appropriate (by and large) but my problem is the use of deadly force. I don't think that that is necessary or apprppriate in this case particularly since the mother is alleged to have told them that he did not have a gun.

The teenager in this story was born in Tobago, left with his parents when he was 1 year old to live in the states. The papers today say that the boy comes from a well-respected family in Tobago. Seems to me that the boy was trying to get the police to kill him -there is a term for that suicide by something or the other, I can't really remember. But my question is why is the first instinct shoot to kill? Why isn't it shoot to disable - in the sense that the 'attacker' would not be able to shoot at the police. Why is it that all of the police choose to fire at the 'attackers' all the time, from all angles, at all parts of the body. They are shooting to kill - 20 bullets can't be to disarm/disable a man. C'mon race related or not it should not be better kill than be sorry.

I remember the flag episode and the trainers debacle. High class comedy in the HC boy! I not surprised about Touches' accuracy in accounting for the diminishing presence of the regular sustenance providers at games - he is the official SW.net food connoisseur. Nuts Landing still real funny though. Whatever happen to Jumbo's helpers? Some of them used to real get bouffed from him boy.  It's a pity that none of them took up his mantle.Sssssssssssstrrrrrrruuutters really fall off the map boy. I remember one time there was a little fella about three years old sitting behind his parents in the uncovered stands (pre-seats stadium) playing with a pepsi bottle, a good five minutes after strutters passed all you hear is "Ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssspopcorn!" well everybody around the lil youth man gorn off eh man. There was always entertainment off the field even if it was lacking on it.

As somebody mentioned the crowds, what about the safe ambience in the crowded stadium - look at Small Mag's report about the game yesterday and like he pointed out guffing up and fisticuffs is the norm for these school games. What about the crowds that used to follow football in the savannah, PSA grounds and I'm sure the other community grounds. Yu don't see the same level of support these days at all.

I voted in Woodbrook and I was the 89th person to vote in my polling station and that was a few minutes to 9. I was surprised that there was no line up or anything the polling station (there were two in that school) looking dead, dead. But then again is Woodbrook and most of the place commercialised now so I guess that is to be expected.

General Discussion / Re: Are we raising delinquent children
« on: October 25, 2007, 02:13:30 PM »
I don't know about your case eh Mal, but in a scenario that I am personally familiar with, the middle sibling of a three children family - the one from outward appearances who is the 'just bad' one (he IS a delinquent, in some minor trouble with the law, not working anywhere) - turns out to be deep down the sweetest, most considerate of the children and in talking to him you realise that he has a deep-seated belief that his mother does not love him, prefers the other two over him and this is the root of his struggle. Now, mind you the mother does not think that she plays favourites at all and who knows, she may be right but that is what he believes.

No child is just bad. True, there may be some children who have a cranky or downright unpleasant disposition from birth but take a look at the infant's gestation period - maybe the mother was under some stress or didn't want to have the child in the first place. Children are imitators and worse yet they perfect and outstrip examples set before them. We are raising delinquent children there are no two ways about it - not deliberately but because we have let a lot of the so called inconsequential things slip past, a domino effect has been unleashed. And of course it is not helped by the ridiculous attitudes illustrated by the parents in Organic's and Tongue's example.

Mal jeux - you contradicting yourself there. You can't answer yes to the question and then say forget blame some children just born bad.

McClaren talking about the referee costing them the game but he didn't mention - as I read on the Guardian yesterday -  that Rooney's goal was also an off-side one. So all things being equal Russia would still have won 1-0.

Great post Midknight! You didn't waste your approaching milestone post, I think that edifying the young is what we need more of. I'm sure that with more experience and time Small Mag will have a more balanced view of things in general but good on you to start the ball rolling for him. The question now is who is there in this virtual family to help him broaden his vocabulary?

Spanish fans say farewell to Puerta
Associated Press,

SEVILLE, Spain (AP) - Antonio Puerta, the soccer player who died three days after collapsing on the field during a match, was cremated Wednesday after thousands of fans gave him an emotional farewell.

People shouted out expressions of affection, applauded and wept as Puerta's coffin, draped in the club's centenary banner and Spanish national flag, made its way through the southern Spanish town to the cemetery, where the family held a private ceremony.
Teammates, rival players and leading figures from the world of soccer paid their last respects to Puerta, and more than 10,000 fans lined the streets surrounding the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium, where a wake was open to the public to mourn the 22-year-old midfielder.

Sevilla fans were seen placing candles, scarves and personal tributes at the door of the stadium. They were accompanied by thousands of fans from crosstown rival Betis.

Puerta died Tuesday of "multiple organ failure stemming from prolonged cardiac arrest" and subsequent coronary problems, according to Virgen del Rocio Hospital director Gimeno Guerrero.

Puerta lost consciousness and fell near his own goal Saturday in the 31st minute, but was able to walk off minutes later after being treated by team doctors. Doctors said he had a heart attack in the locker room and at least one more in the emergency room of a Seville hospital.

Sevilla, which beat Getafe 4-1 in Saturday's match, was scheduled to play at AEK Athens on Tuesday in the second leg of Champions League qualifying, but UEFA postponed the match.

The game will be played Monday, when Sevilla had been scheduled to play Osasuna in the Spanish league. Friday's European Super Cup against AC Milan will be play as scheduled in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Puerta, who was born in Seville, has played for Spain's national team and scored one of Sevilla's penalty kicks in the shootout win over Espanyol in May in the UEFA Cup final.

He also scored an injury-time goal that led Sevilla over Schalke in the semifinals of the 2006 UEFA Cup. Sevilla went on to win the final, beating Middlesbrough 4-0.

Other soccer players who have died after collapsing on the field include Benfica's Miklos Feher in 2004 and Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe at the 2003 Confederations Cup in France.

Football / Dyer faces surgery after double leg fracture

'It is too early to say at this stage how long the player will be out for'

West Ham have confirmed that Kieron Dyer suffered a double leg fracture during last night's Carling Cup tie against Bristol Rovers. Dyer was stretchered off with his right leg broken in two places below the knee, and taken to hospital as a result of a challenge from the the Rovers left winger Joe Jacobson.
"It is too early to say at this stage how long the player will be out for as this will become clearer once the first stage of surgery is completed," read a West Ham statement. Dyer, a £6m summer signing from Newcastle, joins fellow injured new arrivals Julien Faubert and Freddie Ljungberg on the sidelines.

The West Ham manager Alan Curbishley suggested Jacobson's challenge was reckless. "I think the Bristol Rovers player has got to be very disappointed with his tackle," said Curbishley. "As far as I can see he has lashed out after losing the ball and caught Kieron in a difficult area. We are so devastated for [Dyer]. I can't put it into words, really. The game was immaterial after that."
However, the Rovers manager Paul Trollope defended Jacobson, insisting: "Joe is an honest lad and he swung his leg to get the ball. It was just an unfortunate incident."

The injury is the latest serious problem suffered by Dyer, who is almost certain to miss the remainder of England's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and could even struggle to prove his fitness in time, should Steve McClaren's side reach next summer's finals. Previous setbacks include a stress fracture of the foot, knee ligament trouble, shin splints and injuries to his back and hamstring.

I'm glad that the team is playing on Friday to honour him - I don't htink I could do it but I"m glad that they are.

RIP Puerta and may God grant your family and the whole Sevilla community the strength to weather this tide. Be a guardian angel throughout your yet to be born child's life.

Really sad this.

how did carlos get injured?  rough tackle, foul?

Seems like he injured his hamstring in the run up from halfline to cross to Stern. According to the commentators he was a little roughed up on the run.

I went to the funeral. Although the date and time were not published the church was packed, a true testament to what Ricardo meant to people. A man short in stature but definitely a giant in a many people's esteem if one were to judge from the turn-out and the outpouring of tears from both genders.

I thank God for gracing us with your presence Ricardo, never mind that you could be good sour when you wanted to - that was all part of your charm  :). I pray that - as the priest said -  God has mercy on your murderers, that all the criminals somehow have a change of heart and stop this madness. I pray too that Almighty God grants you eternal rest and that you now are lying in his bosom in the company of your beloved mother. Rest in Peace Ricardo, until we meet again.
